The rat soleus (SOL) or medial gastrocnemius (MG) were chronically overloaded by removing their major synergists bilaterally. After 12-14 wks the overloaded SOL (OS) and overloaded MG (OMG) muscles had approximately 50% greater cross-sectional areas (CSA) than the controls. Maximum twitch (Pt) and tetanic (Po) tensions were approximately 46% larger in the OS compared with the normal SOL. The OMG produced 10 and 37% higher Pt and Po, respectively. Specific tension (Po/CSA) was not altered in either group (P greater than 0.05). Contraction times and half-relaxation times were unchanged. Myofibrillar and myosin ATPase specific activities indicated a shift toward that resembling a slower muscle in both the OS and the red portion but not the white portion of the OMG. Generally, markers of glycogen metabolism were reduced (P less than 0.05) in the same muscle areas that showed reduced ATPase activity. These biochemical results were consistent with the apparent histochemical conversion of fibers from fast-twitch, glycolytic----fast-twitch, oxidative-glycolytic----slow-twitch, oxidative types in these muscle areas. These results suggest that overloading either a fast- or slow-twitch plantarflexor results in an increase in muscle mass and maximum tension and in metabolic shifts that generally resemble those observed in a slower muscle. Further, the degree of adaptation appears to be related to the initial fiber type composition of the muscle and/or of the muscle region.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical characteristics of myosin have been demonstrated directly in normal and cross-reinnervated skeletal muscle fibers whose physiological properties have been defined. Fibers belonging to individual motor units were identified by the glycogen-depletion method, which permits correlation of cytochemical and physiological data on the same fibers. The normal flexor digitorum longus (FDL) of the cat is composed primarily of fast-twitch motor units having muscle fibers with high myosin ATPase activity. These fibers reacted with antibodies specific for the two light chains characteristic of fast myosin, but not with antibodies against slow myosin. Two categories of fast fibers, corresponding to two physiological motor unit types (FF and FR), differed in their immunochemical response, from which it can be concluded that their myosins are distinctive. The soleus (SOL) consists almost entirely of slow-twitch motor units having muscle fibers with low myosin ATPase activity. These fibers reacted with antibodies against slow myosin, but not with antibodies specific for fast myosin. When the FDL muscle was cross-reinnervated by the SOL nerve, twitch contraction times were slowed about twofold, and motor units resembled SOL units in a number of physiological properties. The corresponding muscle fibers had low ATPase activity, and they reacted with antibodies against slow myosin only. The myosin of individual cross-reinnervated FDL muscle units was therefore transformed, apparently completely, to a slow type. In contrast, cross-reinnervation of the SOL muscle by FDL motoneurons did not effect a complete converse transformation. Although cross-reinnervated SOL motor units had faster than normal twitch contraction times (about twofold), other physiological properties characteristic of type S motor units were unchanged. Despite the change in contraction times, cross-reinnervated SOL muscle fibers exhibited no change in ATPase activity. They also continued to react with antibodies against slow myosin, but in contrast to the normal SOL, they now showed a positive response to an antibody specific for one of the light chains of fast myosin. The myosins of both fast and slow muscles were thus converted by cross-reinnervation, but in the SOL, the newly synthesized myosin was not equivalent to that normally present in either the FDL or SOL. This suggests that, in the SOL, alteration of the nerve supply and the associated dynamic activity pattern are not sufficient to completely respecify the type of myosin expressed.  相似文献

Heat, mechanics, and myosin ATPase in normal and hypertrophied heart muscle   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper we review our previous work on the myothermic economy of isometric force production in compensated cardiac hypertrophy secondary to pulmonary artery constriction (pressure overload) and/or thyrotoxicosis (volume overload). Hypertrophy-induced changes in isotonic and isometric twitch mechanics are correlated with accompanying changes in actin-activated myosin ATPase and heat liberation. Heat measurements were made with rapid, high-sensitivity thermopiles on right ventricular papillary muscles from normal and hypertrophied rabbit hearts. Total activity-related heat was separated into initial and recovery heat. Initial heat was separated into a tension-dependent component (TDH) relating to cross-bridge activity, and a tension-independent component (TIH) relating to excitation-contraction coupling. There were oppositely directed changes in most parameters studied in pressure overload hypertrophy (P) as compared with thyrotoxic hypertrophy (T). Thus, in P there was depression (30-50% in the rate of isometric force production, mechanical Vmax, TDH and TDH rate, myosin ATPase, TIH, and prolongation in time-to-peak twitch tension, whereas in T all parameters were oppositely changed except for no change in TIH. Thyrotoxicosis following pressure overload reversed the P-induced changes in all parameters. There was a direct, linear relation between in vitro actin-activated myosin ATPase and in vivo TDH. However, TDH per unit twitch tension or tension-time integral varied inversely with ATPase, making force production more economical than normal in P muscles and less economical than normal in T muscles. These cellular changes beneficially equip P hearts for slow, high-pressure, economical pumping the T hearts for fast, high-volume, uneconomical pumping. The differences are similar to those between slow and fast skeletal muscle and between neonatal and adult skeletal muscle. The mechanism of these changes is discussed in terms of an enzyme kinetic scheme of chemomechanical coupling in actomyosin interaction.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged hypokinesia on the contractile properties and myosin isozymes of single fibers from the synergistic fast-twitch plantaris (PL) and slow-twitch soleus (SOL) skeletal muscles of adult rats were studied after 28 days of hindlimb suspension. There was a 31% increase in the mean maximal velocity of unloaded shortening (Vmax) among fibers from SOL with no change in the mean Vmax of fibers from PL after suspension. The myosin heavy and light chain (MHC and MLC) composition of bundles and the MHC composition of single fibers from control and suspended muscles were examined using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. There was a marked increase in the relative amount of fast-type MHC's in hypokinetic SOL and a smaller increase in the amount of fast-type MHC's in the PL. Relatively minor changes occurred in the MLC's during hypokinesia. As Vmax increased among individual fibers from control and suspended muscles, the relative amount of fast-type MHC's increased. The results demonstrate that the myosin isozyme composition of skeletal muscle, especially the heavy chains, is altered during hypokinesia, and this finding provides an explanation for changes in Vmax of rat single muscle fibers under the same conditions.  相似文献

Two types of myosin isolated from ordinary (fast) and dark (slow) muscles of carp were examined by ATPase and in vitro motility assays. Vmax of the ATPase activity and sliding velocity of ordinary myosin showed 1.6 and 1.5 times higher activities than those of dark myosin, whereas those of mammalian fast myosin were much higher, 3 to 10 times, than those of slow myosin. Although ordinary myosin had almost identical activities to those of mammalian fast myosin, activities of dark myosin was twice of those of mammalian slow myosin. This high motile activity of dark myosin can account for the physiological role of dark muscle in cruising of fish. By comparing Km of the actin-activated ATPase activity, ordinary myosin was appeared to have higher affinity to F-actin than dark myosin, and this was confirmed by the binding assay of HMM or S-1 of carp myosin to F-actin. Investigation of myosin assembly by electron microscopy and the centrifugation assay revealed that ordinary myosin assembled much poorly than dark myosin or mammalian fast myosin. This phenomenon may reflect characteristic cellular function of fish skeletal muscle.  相似文献

1. A sample of fibers from deep (close to the bone) and superficial (away from the bone) regions of the plantaris (PLT) and medial (MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemius muscles of a neonatal, a 17-day-old and an adult giraffe were typed qualitatively as dark or light based on alkaline preincubation myosin ATPase staining properties and then sized. 2. Each muscle at all ages showed a higher percentage and a larger cross-sectional area (CSA) or light ATPase fibers in the deep than the superficial region. This relationship was qualitatively, although not quantitatively, similar to that reported in hindlimb muscles of other mammals. 3. At all ages, the PLT, the deepest muscle in the synergistic group, had the highest relative total CSA of light ATPase fibers among the muscles sampled. 4. At birth, the PLT had an unusually high percentage of light ATPase fibers in comparison to that found in the same muscle of other mammals. With age, the total CSA of light ATPase fibers increased dramatically in the PLT and decreased slightly in the MG and LG. 5. These data suggest that the PLT, especially the deep portion, may functionally replace the soleus muscle which is absent in the giraffe. In addition, the fiber type results demonstrate that the changes in the fiber type composition of individual muscles observed at different postnatal ages in the giraffe are relatively similar to that reported in smaller mammals, suggesting the existence of similar regulatory mechanisms.

With the use of myosin adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) and immunofluorescence staining methods, the adaptive responses of intrafusal and extrafusal fibers to endurance swimming were studied in frozen sections of rat soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles. Glycogen depletion confirmed muscle fatigue at the end of a standardized bout of exercise. No significant age-dependent changes in myosin isoforms were detected in any fibers. The 12-wk training increased type I fibers by 10.9% in the SOL and type IIa fibers in the EDL by 16.6%. In trained muscle sections, both staining methods identified a permuted chain fiber, expressed the same as the myosin isoform in the bag2 fiber. However, no exercise-induced change of myosin isoform profile was found in the bag1 and bag2 fibers. Myosin ATPase (and immunofluorescence) staining showed the percentage of permuted chain fibers increased from 0 to 6.7% (5.6%) after 6 wk of training and to 19.2% (14.1%) after 12 wk of training and that it was still at 6.1% (4.2%) 10 wks after training. A novel myosin isoform may thus be expressed in nuclear chain fibers by repetitive recruitment of muscle spindles.  相似文献

Do muscle fiber properties commonly associated with fiber types in adult animals and the population distribution of these properties require normal activation patterns to develop? To address this issue, the activity of an oxidative [succinic dehydrogenase (SDH)] and a glycolytic [alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (GPD)] marker enzyme, the characteristics of myosin adenosinetriphosphatase (myosin ATPase, alkaline preincubation), and the cross-sectional area of single fibers were studied. The soleus and medial gastrocnemius of normal adult cats were compared with cats that 6 mo earlier had been spinally transected at T12-T13 at 2 wk of age. In control cats, SDH activity was higher in dark than light ATPase fibers in the soleus and higher in light than dark ATPase fibers in the medial gastrocnemius. After transection, SDH activity was similar to control in both muscles. GPD activity appeared to be elevated in some fibers in each fiber type in both muscles after transection. The cross-sectional areas most affected by spinal transection were light ATPase fibers of the soleus and dark ATPase fibers of the medial gastrocnemius, the predominant fiber type in each muscle. These data demonstrate that although the muscle fibers of cats spinalized at 2 wk of age presumably were never exposed to normal levels of activation, the activity of an oxidative marker enzyme was maintained or elevated 6 mo after spinal transection. Furthermore, although the absolute enzyme activities in some fibers were elevated by transection, three functional protein systems commonly associated with fiber types, i.e., hydrolysis of ATP by myosin ATPase and glycolytic (GPD) and oxidative (SHD) metabolism, developed in a coordinated manner typical of normal adult muscles.  相似文献

Models of disuse: a comparison of hindlimb suspension and immobilization   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effects of 1 and 2 wk of hindlimb suspension (HS) on rat skeletal muscle function were determined and the results compared with those obtained previously with hindlimb immobilization (HI). Both models of disuse (HS and HI) primarily affected slow-twitch muscle. Each decreased the isometric twitch duration in the slow-twitch soleus; however, the HS-mediated effect was entirely a result of a shortened contraction time (CT), whereas HI reduced one-half relaxation time (1/2 RT) as well as CT. Soleus muscle mass and peak tetanic tension (Po) declined with disuse. The HS effect on muscle mass and Po was variable, however, for all experiments HS produced atrophy equal to or greater than HI. A major difference existed in the effects of HS and HI on the maximal speed of soleus muscle shortening (Vmax). One and 2 wk of HS produced increases in Vmax to 4.45 +/- 0.34 and 6.83 +/- 0.74 fiber lengths/s, respectively, compared with control velocities of 3.05 +/- 0.08. By contrast over a similar time period, HI had no significant effect on soleus Vmax. The increase in Vmax at 14 days of HS was associated with, and perhaps caused by, the increased expression of a second faster migrating isozyme of myosin. The new native isozyme comigrated with fast myosin, but its light chain subunits contained only LC1s and LC2s. The mechanism responsible for the increase is unknown. One plausible explanation is that the apparent HS-mediated modification in muscle fiber type is dependent on the elimination of loadbearing or isometric contractions, a condition that does not exist during HI.  相似文献

The adaptation of a slow (soleus, Sol) and a fast (medial gastrocnemius, MG) skeletal muscle to spaceflight was studied in five young male rats. The flight period was 12.5 days and the rats were killed approximately 48 h after returning to 1 g. Five other rats that were housed in cages similar to those used by the flight rats were maintained at 1 g for the same period of time to serve as ground-based controls. Fibers were classified as dark or light staining for myosin adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). On the average, the fibers in the Sol of the flight rats atrophied twice as much as those in the MG. Further, the fibers located in the deep (close to the bone and having the highest percentage of light ATPase and high oxidative fibers in the muscle cross section) region of the MG atrophied more than the fibers located in the superficial (away from the bone and having the lowest percentage of light ATPase and high oxidative fibers in the muscle cross-section) region of the muscle. Based on quantitative histochemical assays of single muscle fibers, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity per unit volume was unchanged in fibers of the Sol and MG. However, in the Sol, but not the MG, the total amount of SDH activity in a 10-microns-thick section of a fiber decreased significantly in response to spaceflight. Based on population distributions, it appears that the alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) activities were elevated in the dark ATPase fibers in the Sol, whereas the light fibers in the Sol and both fiber types in the MG did not appear to change. The ratio of GPD to SDH activities increased in the dark (but not light) fibers of the Sol and was unaffected in the MG. Immunohistochemical analyses indicate that approximately 40% of the fibers in the Sol of flight rats expressed a fast myosin heavy chain compared with 22% in control rats. Further, 31% of the fibers in the Sol of flight rats expressed both fast and slow myosin heavy chains compared with 8% in control rats. Immunohistochemical changes in the MG were minimal. These data suggest that the magnitude and direction of enzymatic activity and cell volume changes are dependent on the muscle, the region of the muscle, and the type of myosin expressed in the fibers. Further, the ability of fibers to maintain normal or even elevated activities per unit volume of some metabolic enzymes is remarkable considering the marked and rapid decrease in fiber volume.  相似文献

Ca2+ATPase activity and light chains of myosin, fractionated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, in developing, adult and denervated fast, slow and cardiac muscles of the rat, guinea-pig, cat, rabbit and chick were studied. It has been shown that in normal adult muscles the electrophoretic pattern of light chains of myosin reflects the myosin ATPase activity only when muscles from the same animal species are compared. In homologous muscles from adult animals differing in size, the size-dependent difference in myosin ATPase activity is not revealed in the electrophoretic pattern. Both in developing and in denervated muscle, changes in myosin ATPase activity are either connected with changes in the pattern of light chains of myosin or this pattern does not change. This relation is different in fast and slow muscles and also differs in chick and rabbit muscles. There are several possibilities of explaining the relation between ATPase activity of myosin and the pattern of light chains of myosin. The observation that myosin from the soleus muscle of 1-month-old rabbit contains light chains corresponding to both fast and slow type of myosin, indicates that the change in myosin ATPase activity during development is due to changes in the ratio between the fast and slow type of myosin.  相似文献

Vertebrate nonmuscle myosins contain two phosphorylatable light chains. The maximum rate, Vmax, of the actin-activated adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) of unphosphorylated calf thymus myosin was found to be about 100 nmol/(min X mg), the same as that of thymus myosin with two phosphorylated light chains. However, the Kapp (actin concentration required to achieve 1/2 Vmax) of the unphosphorylated myosin was 15-20-fold greater than that of the phosphorylated myosin. When actin complexed with either skeletal muscle tropomyosin or calf thymus tropomyosin was used, the values for Vmax were about the same as those obtained with F-actin. In the presence of skeletal muscle tropomyosin, the Kapp of the unphosphorylated myosin was only 2-3-fold greater than that of the phosphorylated myosin, and in the presence of thymus tropomyosin, there was about a 5-fold difference in their Kapp values. Thus, light chain phosphorylation regulates the actin-activated ATPase of thymus myosin not by increasing Vmax but rather by decreasing the Kapp of this myosin for actin. These rather small differences in Kapp suggest that other proteins may be involved in the regulation of the actin-activated ATPase of thymus myosin. Regulated actin (actin plus skeletal muscle troponin-tropomyosin) was used to examine possible effects of thin-filament regulatory proteins. In the presence of calcium, phosphorylation caused only a slight increase in Vmax and a 2-fold decrease in Kapp of the regulated actin-activated ATPase of thymus myosin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In vitro studies have used protein markers to distinguish between myogenic cells isolated from fast and slow skeletal muscles. The protein markers provide some support for the hypothesis that satellite cells from fast and slow muscles are different, but the data are equivocal. To test this hypothesis directly, three-dimensional skeletal muscle constructs were engineered from myogenic cells isolated from fast tibialis anterior (TA) and slow soleus (SOL) muscles of rats and functionality was tested. Time to peak twitch tension (TPT) and half relaxation time (RT1/2) were 30% slower in constructs from the SOL. The slower contraction and relaxation times for the SOL constructs resulted in left shift of the force-frequency curve compared with those from the TA. Western blot analysis showed a 60% greater quantity of fast myosin heavy chain in the TA constructs. 14 days of chronic low-frequency electrical stimulation resulted in a 15% slower TPT and a 14% slower RT1/2, but no change in absolute force production in the TA constructs. In SOL constructs, slow electrical stimulation resulted in an 80% increase in absolute force production with no change in TPT or RT1/2. The addition of cyclosporine A did not prevent the increase in force in SOL constructs after chronic low-frequency electrical stimulation, suggesting that calcineurin is not responsible for the increase in force. We conclude that myogenic cells associated with a slow muscle are imprinted to produce muscle that contracts and relaxes slowly and that calcineurin activity cannot explain the response to a slow pattern of electrical stimulation. tissue engineering; calcineurin; electrical stimulation; engineered muscle; bioreactors  相似文献

Muscle LIM protein (MLP) is constitutively expressed in slow, but undetectable in fast, muscles of the rat. Here we show that MLP was upregulated at both the mRNA and protein levels under experimental conditions leading to transitions from fast to slower phenotypes. Chronic low-frequency stimulation and mechanical overloading by synergist removal both induced fast-to-slow shifts in myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms and expression of MLP in fast muscles. High amounts of MLP mRNA and protein were also present in fast muscles of the myotonic, hyperactive ADR mouse. Hypothyroidism evoked shifts in myosin composition toward slower isoforms and increased the MLP protein content of soleus (SOL) muscle but failed to induce MLP in fast muscles. Unweighting by hindlimb suspension elicited slow-to-fast transitions in MHC expression without altering MLP levels in SOL muscle. Hyperthyroidism shifted the MHC pattern toward faster isoforms but did not affect MLP content in SOL muscle. We conclude that alterations in MLP expression are associated with transitions from fast to slower phenotypes but not with slow-to-fast muscle fiber transitions.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the limited adaptive range observed in fast rat muscles in regard to expression of the slow myosin is due to intrinsic properties of their myogenic stem cells was tested by examining myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression in regenerated rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus (SOL) muscles. The muscles were injured by bupivacaine, transplanted to the SOL muscle bed and innervated by the SOL nerve. Three months later, muscle fibre types were determined. MHC expression in muscle fibres was demonstrated immunohistochemically and analysed by SDS-glycerol gel electrophoresis. Regenerated EDL transplants became very similar to the control SOL muscles and indistinguishable from the SOL transplants. Slow type 1 fibres predominated and the slow MHC-1 isoform was present in more than 90% of all muscle fibres. It contributed more than 80% of total MHC content in the EDL transplants. About 7% of fibres exhibited MHC-2a and about 7% of fibres coexpressed MHC-1 and MHC-2a. MHC-2x/d contributed about 5–10% of the whole MHCs in regenerated EDL and SOL transplants. The restricted adaptive range of adult rat EDL muscle in regard to the synthesis of MHC-1 is not rooted in muscle progenitor cells; it is probably due to an irreversible maturation-related change switching off the gene for the slow MHC isoform. Contractile properties and innervation patterns were determined in identified single fibers from the iliofibularis muscle of the desert iguana, Dipsosaurus dorsalis. Single fibers from both the red and white regions of the iliofibularis muscle were dissected along their length under oil and a portion was mounted on transducers for determination of maximum isometric tension (Po) and unloaded shortening velocity (Vmax) using the slack test method. Fibers were chemically skinned and activated by high Ca++. The remaining portion of the muscle fiber was mounted on a glass slide and histochemically treated to demonstrate myosin ATPase activity. Fibers studied functionally could therefore be classified as fast or slow according to their myosin ATPase activity, and they could also be classified metabolically according to the region of the muscle from which they were dissected. Fast-twitch glycolytic (FG) fibers from the white region and fast-twitch oxidative, glycolytic (FOG) and slow fibers from the red region had shortening velocities at 25 degrees C of 7.5, 4.4, and 1.5 l X s-1, respectively. Po did not differ in the three fiber types, averaging 279 kN X m-2. In a second experiment, 10 microns sections were examined every 30 microns through the proximal-most 7.5 mm of the iliofibularis muscle for motor endplates. Sections were stained to demonstrate regions of acetylcholinesterase activity. Fibers with visible endplates were classified in serial sections by histochemical treatment for myosin ATPase and succinic dehydrogenase. All slow fibers examined (n = 22) exhibited multiple endplates, averaging one every 725 microns.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Fast and slow muscles from the claws and abdomen of the American lobster Homarus americanus were examined for adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity and for differences in myofibrillar proteins. Both myosin and actomyosin ATPase were correlated with fiber composition and contractile speed. Four distinct patterns of myofibrillar proteins observed in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels were distinguished by different assemblages of regulatory and contractile protein variants. A total of three species of troponin-T, five species of troponin-I, and three species of troponin-C were observed. Lobster myosins contained two groups of light chains (LC), termed "alpha" and "beta." There were three alpha-LC variants and two beta-LC variants. There were no apparent differences in myosin heavy chain, actin, and tropomyosin. Only paramyosin showed a pattern completely consistent with muscle fiber type: slow fibers contained a species (105 kD) slightly smaller than the principle variant (110 kD) in fast fibers. It is proposed that the type of paramyosin present could provide a biochemical marker to identify the fiber composition of muscles that have not been fully characterized. The diversity of troponin and myosin LC variants suggests that subtle differences in physiological performance exist within the broader categories of fast- and slow-twitch muscles.  相似文献

Heterotopic transplantation of the levator ani (LA) muscle into the bed of the fast tibialis anterior (TA) or slow soleus (SOL) muscle respectively results in transformation of contractile and histochemical properties of the muscle dependent on the new "foreign" innervation. This transformation is observed after transplantation of minced muscle tissue and of free grafts. The result of transformation is more pronounced in the case of free LA-TA grafts which show progressive shortening of contractile response, whereas the LA-SOL shows slight shortening. The heterotopically transplanted free LA-SOL and the LA-TA grafts become relatively faster than the respective original muscle, suggesting operation of myogenic factors related to the fast LA muscle. Maximal tetanic tension output of the free heterotopic grafts 60 days after transplantation recovers to only about a quarter of the correspondong control muscles. Recovery of speed of contraction in the transplanted LA muscle is similar to that observed after selfreinnervation after crushing the pudendal nerve close to its entry into the muscle. In the heterotopically transplanted muscles the reversal of the originally uniform histochemical fibre pattern to a mixed fibre pattern in respect to ATPase and SDH activity is dependent on the type of innervation. After selfreinnervation of the LA muscle by the pudendal nerve a uniform fibre pattern is maintained with regeneration of the nerve.  相似文献

Synergistic behaviour of triceps surae muscles (medial gastrocnemius-MG, lateral gastrocnemius-LG, soleus-SOL) during sustained submaximal plantarflexions was investigated in this study. Six male subjects were asked to sustain an isometric plantar flexor effort to exhaustion at two different knee angles. Exhaustion was defined as the point when they could no longer maintain the required tension. The loads sustained at 0 and 120 degrees of knee flexion represented 50% and 36% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) respectively. MVC was measured at 0 degree knee flexion. During the contractions, electromyograms (EMG) from the surface of the triceps surae muscles were recorded. Changes in the synergistic behaviour of the triceps surae were assessed via partial correlations of the average EMG (AEMG) between three muscle combinations; MG/LG, MG/SOL, LG/SOL, and correlation between SOL/MG + LG and MG/SOL + LG. The latter combinations were based on either common fibre type or innervation properties. Two types of synergisms were identified: trade-off and coactivation. Trade-off and coactivation synergies were defined by significant (p less than 0.05) positive and negative correlations respectively. Coactivation synergism was found to occur predominantly under conditions of high load or reduced length of the triceps surae, and increased with the duration of the contraction. Trade-off synergism was evident when the muscles were at their optimum length and the loads sustained were submaximum.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
