Microbiological quality of bottled water sold in Canada   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The microbiological quality of bottled water sold in Canada was evaluated. A total of 114 lots of bottled water, both domestic and imported, were analyzed for aerobic colony count, coliforms, fecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli. No fecal coliforms or E. coli were found. Nineteen (46%) of the 41 lots of domestic purified water were found to exceed aerobic colony count standards and another lot exceeded coliform standards. One lot each of domestic and imported mineral water exceeded coliform standards. If mineral water were governed by the aerobic colony count standards for bottled water, then five lots each of both domestic and imported mineral water would have been found to be unsatisfactory. More surveillance of the bottled water industry in Canada is recommended.  相似文献

通过对9个微卫星座位的扩增,研究了Z:ZCLA长爪沙鼠的遗传多态性。结果表明,Z:ZCLA长爪沙鼠在其中1个位点上只有一个等位基因,在其它位点上均有2~4个等位基因,平均等位基因数2.6个。平均杂合度0.4684,平均多态信息量0.4166,平均有效等位基因数2.1756。全群基因纯合度从0.1111~0.5555,平均0.3389,提示目前本群遗传多样性水平处于中度多态。  相似文献

Biological monitoring, using coliform bacteria and macroinvertebrate populations and diversity, was carried out monthly from August 2004 to January 2005 to determine the ecological health of the Usuthu and Mbuluzi rivers in Swaziland. Water temperature and pH were not significantly different between sites, but differed significantly between months. Bacterial species identified from both rivers were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus vulgaris, with no significant differences in mean colony counts between the two rivers. Average colony counts were significantly different between months. A total of 926 macroinvertebrates, representing 28 families, were collected from both rivers and were significantly different between sites, rivers and months. Macroinvertebrate populations and diversity were negatively correlated with bacterial colony counts. Compliance with regulated water quality standards did not necessarily indicate acceptable water quality for biological communities, and thus there is a need for an integrated approach in water quality monitoring.  相似文献

We compared three methods for estimating fungal species diversity in soil samples. A rapid screening method based on gross colony morphological features and color reference standards was compared with traditional fungal taxonomic methods and PCR-RFLP for estimation of ecological indices of soil microfungal community composition. Normalized counts of colony morphotypes on dichloran rose bengal medium were used to estimate species richness (S) and evenness (J) and to calculate Shannon's diversity (H) and Simpson's (SI) dominance indices. Isolates were obtained by dilution plating techniques from litter and soil layer samples taken from Douglas-fir forest and clear-cut areas at two locations in the Cascade Mountains. The highest correspondence (97%) was observed between taxonomic identification and RFLP patterns (32:33). Cladistic analyses of PCR-RFLP patterns indicated an 81% correspondence between RFLP patterns:colony morphotypes (33:41). A correspondence of 78% was observed between traditional taxonomic identification:colony morphotypes (32:41). Statistical analyses of ecological indices based on quantitative application of the colony morphotyping method indicated significant differences (P < 0.05) in fungal community composition between forested and clear-cut areas at the Toad Road site but not at the Falls Creek site. Comparisons of ecological indices based on traditional identification of taxa by microscopic characterization on defined culture media resulted in identical findings of statistical significance. The colony morphotyping approach is proposed as a screening method to identify potential effects of land management practices, edaphic factors and pollutants on microfungal diversity.  相似文献

S ummary . The examination of a series of 713 milk bottles cleansed by hand washing at producer-retailer farm dairies showed that though nearly 60% attained satisfactory bacteriological standards, about 30% gave high colony counts (>600/bottle), while coli-aerogenes organisms were found in 17% and milk spoilage organisms in 25% of them. The microflora of efficiently cleansed bottles, with colony counts of <200/bottle, was dominated by micrococci and aerobic sporeforming rods. Only 3.7% of the 259 cultures from these bottles gave acid reactions in litmus milk in 72 h at 22°. Inefficiently cleansed bottles, with colony counts of >600/bottle, had quite a different type of microflora which was usually dominated by Gram negative rods (achromobacteria, nonfluorescent pseudomonads and flavobacteria). A much higher proportion (19%) of the 393 cultures from these bottles gave acid reactions in litmus milk.  相似文献

目的检测SPF金黄地鼠在从204车间转运到隔离器车间时微生物污染情况,同时对不同运输盒进行比较,筛选合格的实验动物运输盒。方法用TSA培养皿模拟实验动物运输过程,比较沉降菌检测结果。结果大小IVC笼盒内环境微生物能控制在14 cfu/4 h以下,而且菌落形态与SPF饲养间环境内的沉降菌基本一致,符合标准要求;甲乙普通运输盒内环境微生物却在70 cfu/4 h以上,不符合标准要求。结论 SPF金黄地鼠在从204车间转运到隔离器车间时未受到污染;实验动物转移运输应选择大小IVC笼盒。  相似文献

Studies have been carried out on the levels of serum and urine colony stimulating activity (CSA) and peripheral blood and bone marrow colony forming cell numbers in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) during various phases of their disease. These studies have suggested that serum and urine levels of colony stimulating factor are reduced during the inital or relapse phase of the disease compared to levels found during remission. It has also been found that the number of bone marrow colony forming cells is reduced in relapse or before treatment and elevated during remission while the number of peripheral blood colony forming cells is increased during relapse or before treatment and normal during remission. It has also been shown that mixing of serum or leukemic cells with normal human bone marrow cells inhibits colony formation.  相似文献

The tracheal mite has been associated with colony deaths worldwide since the mite was first discovered in 1919. Yet controversy about its role in honey bee colony mortality has existed since that time. Other pathogens such as bacteria and viruses have been suggested as the cause of colony deaths as well as degenerative changes in individual honey bees. Using data from published work we developed a qualitative mortality model to explain colony mortality due to tracheal mite infestation in the field. Our model suggests that colonies of tracheal-mite infested honey bees, with no other pathogens present, can die out in the late winter/early spring period due to their inability to thermoregulate. An accumulation of factors conspire to cause colony death including reduced brood/bee population, loose winter clusters, reduced flight muscle function and increasing mite infestation. In essence a cascade effect results in the colony losing its cohesion and leading to its ultimate collapse.  相似文献

Purification of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans cultures by single colony isolation has been a real problem partly because of the difficulty to grow the cells on a solid medium. As a result many apparently pure cultures of T. ferrooxidans have been found to contain more than one strain or acidophilic heterotrophic bacteria as contaminants. Adoption of an agarose-based solid medium to grow this organism appears dependable either to distinguish the strains according to colony morphology or to purify a strain from heterotrophic contaminants by single colony isolation. That colony morphology of the same strain may differ depending on the source of agarose is another interesting observation which advises one to maintain strictly identical growth conditions to distinguish strains according to colony morphology.  相似文献

Colony morphology has been used as an important identification and characterization criterion in bacteriology for many decades. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the appearance of different colony types have been given little attention. The synthesis of O antigen is defunct in Escherichia coli K-12, and colonies should accordingly only appear to be rough. However, previous reports have noted the presence of different interchangeable colony morphology types. In this study we have addressed the influence of two phase-variable surface structures, antigen 43 and type 1 fimbriae, on colony morphology. Due to differential expression of these structures, four different colony phenotypes could be distinguished. By creating and studying defined mutants of the respective loci, i.e. , flu and fim, we conclude that the presence or absence of the corresponding gene products on the cells correlates with the observed colony morphology forms. Interestingly, the habitat specificity of bacteria under static liquid conditions seems to correlate with the colony phenotypes.  相似文献

Although published normative reference standards for hematologic and clinical chemistry measures are available for adult baboons, their applicability to infants has not been addressed. We analyzed these measures in 110 infant baboons (55 females and 55 males) from a large breeding colony at the Southwest Regional Primate Research Center in San Antonio, Texas. The sample consists of olive baboons and olive/yellow baboon hybrids, 1 week to 12 months of age. We produced cross-sectional reference values and examined the effects of age, sex, and subspecies on these variables. Hematology reference ranges for infant baboons are similar to, but wider than, those for adults. Reference ranges for blood biochemistry measures are generally more dissimilar to adults, indicating that for many variables, reference ranges for adult baboons are not adequate for infants. Although sex and subspecies differences are rare, age accounts for more than 10% of the variance in many of the variables.  相似文献

A threshold reinforcement model in insect societies is explored over a range of colony sizes and levels of task demand to examine their effects upon worker polyethism. We find that increasing colony size while keeping the demand proportional to the colony size causes an increase in the differentiation among individuals in their activity levels, thus explaining the occurrence of elitism (individuals that do a disproportionately large proportion of work) in insect societies. Similar results were obtained when the overall work demand is increased while keeping the colony size constant. Our model can reproduce a whole suite of distributions of the activity levels among colony members that have been found in empirical studies. When there are two tasks, we demonstrate that increasing demand and colony size generates highly specialized individuals, but without invoking any strict assumptions about spatial organization of work or any inherent abilities of individuals to tackle different tasks. Importantly, such specialization only occurs above a critical colony size such that smaller colonies contain a set of undifferentiated equally inactive individuals while larger colonies contain both active specialists and inactive generalists, as has been found in empirical studies and is predicted from other theoretical considerations.  相似文献

Initial attempts to use colony morphogenesis as a tool to investigate bacterial multicellularity were limited by the fact that laboratory strains often have lost many of their developmental properties. Recent advances in elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying colony morphogenesis have been made possible through the use of undomesticated strains. In particular, Bacillus subtilis has proven to be a remarkable model system to study colony morphogenesis because of its well-characterized developmental features. Genetic screens that analyze mutants defective in colony morphology have led to the discovery of an intricate regulatory network that controls the production of an extracellular matrix. This matrix is essential for the development of complex colony architecture characterized by aerial projections that serve as preferential sites for sporulation. While much progress has been made, the challenge for future studies will be to determine the underlying mechanisms that regulate development such that differentiation occurs in a spatially and temporally organized manner.  相似文献

Phenotypic diversification among colony members often leads to formation of physical castes which are morphologically specialised for particular tasks within the colony. The relative abundance of these castes and their body sizes represent two key aspects of the demography of a colony that may reflect the colony’s needs and conditions, and ultimately influence its survival and reproductive success. In a recently discovered social trematode, Philophthalmus sp., which exhibits a reproductive division of labour, the role of competition and colony composition in shaping reproductive success and behaviour of colony members has been documented. As body size variation within physical castes often influences colony efficiency, we investigated how the growth of reproductive and non-reproductive morphs of Philophthalmus sp. responds to competitive pressure, and to other attributes of colony demography such as colony size and composition. Our survey of a natural population and in vitro experiments demonstrate that the growth of reproductive colony members reflects the interaction between colony composition and the presence of a competitor, while the non-reproductive members simply grow larger in the presence of the intra-host competitor, Maritrema novaezealandensis. Furthermore, the close association between the volume and reproductive capacity of the reproductive members corroborates an adaptive value of colony member size in determining the fitness of the trematode colony as a whole. The present study is the first to demonstrate a fitness consequence, and identify the determinants, of the growth of colony members in social trematodes.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have, in insects, important physiological and ecological functions, such as protection against desiccation and as semiochemicals in social taxa, including termites. CHCs are, in termites, known to vary qualitatively and/or quantitatively among species, populations, castes, or seasons. Changes to hydrocarbon profile composition have been linked to varying degrees of aggression between termite colonies, although the variability of results among studies suggests that additional factors might have been involved. One source of such variability may be colony age, as termite colony demographics significantly change over time, with different caste and instar compositions throughout the life of the colony. We here hypothesize that the intracolonial chemical profile heterogeneity would be high in incipient termite colonies but would homogenize over time as a colony ages and accumulates older workers in improved homeostatic conditions. We studied caste‐specific patterns of CHC profiles in Coptotermes gestroi colonies of four different age classes (6, 18, 30, and 42 months). The CHC profiles were variable among castes in the youngest colonies, but progressively converged toward a colony‐wide homogenized chemical profile. Young colonies had a less‐defined CHC identity, which implies a potentially high acceptance threshold for non‐nestmates conspecifics in young colonies. Our results also suggest that there was no selective pressure for an early‐defined colony CHC profile to evolve in termites, potentially allowing an incipient colony to merge nonagonistically with another conspecific incipient colony, with both colonies indirectly and passively avoiding mutual destruction as a result.  相似文献

Aim  To map and assess the breeding distribution of emperor penguins ( Aptenodytes forsteri ) using remote sensing.
Location  Pan-Antarctic.
Methods  Using Landsat ETM satellite images downloaded from the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA), we detect faecal staining of ice by emperor penguins associated with their colony locations. Emperor penguins breed on sea ice, and their colonies exist in situ between May and December each year. Faecal staining at these colony locations shows on Landsat imagery as brown patches, the only staining of this colour on sea ice. This staining can therefore be used as an analogue for colony locations. The whole continental coastline has been analysed, and each possible signal has been identified visually and checked by spectral analysis. In areas where LIMA data are unsuitable, freely available Landsat imagery has been supplemented.
Results  We have identified colony locations of emperor penguins at a total of 38 sites. Of these, 10 are new locations, and six previously known colony locations have been repositioned (by over 10 km) due to poor geographical information in old records. Six colony locations, all from old or unconfirmed records, were not found or have disappeared.
Main conclusions  We present a new pan-Antarctic species distribution of emperor penguins mapped from space. In one synoptic survey we locate extant emperor penguin colonies, a species previously poorly mapped due to its unique breeding habits, and provide a vital geographical resource for future studies of an iconic species believed to be vulnerable to future climate change.  相似文献

Female mating frequency is one of the key parameters of social insect evolution. Several hypotheses have been suggested to explain multiple mating and considerable empirical research has led to conflicting results. Building on several earlier analyses, we present a simple general model that links the number of queen matings to variance in colony performance and this variance to average colony fitness. The model predicts selection for multiple mating if the average colony succeeds in a focal task, and selection for single mating if the average colony fails, irrespective of the proximate mechanism that links genetic diversity to colony fitness. Empirical support comes from interspecific comparisons, e.g. between the bee genera Apis and Bombus, and from data on several ant species, but more comprehensive empirical tests are needed.  相似文献

Four different brands of bottled water had counts of aerobic bacteria ranging from 103 to 106 colony forming units/100 ml. Pathogens isolated includedPseudomonas (in all brands),Alcaligenes andEscherichia coli (each in three brands), andKlebsiella, Enterobacter andShigella (each in two brands).
