During 6 years of monitoring breeding groups of lion-tailed macaques, it was discovered that females regularly emitted a non-copulatory vocalization during the follicular portion of the menstrual cycle. In the majority of cases females focused visually on a particular male when calling. Two-thirds of all calls were directed at males living outside the group. The responses of targeted males were consistent with the evidence from its temporal pattern that calling is a behavior used by females to draw attention to their willingness to receive copulations. Given that lion-tails are highly arboreal, it is postulated that in the wild state females use calls to attract the attention of males under conditions of limited visibility. As an unambiguous indicator of receptivity, this vocalization may facilitate the reproductive management of captive populations. 相似文献

Evidence indicates that primate species differ not only in social structure and concordant social propensities, but also in their approach toward novel objects, environments, and procedures. These differences in response dispositions have been described as being based on differences in characteristic stances toward the environment, also called temperaments. This report extends previous comparative primate research by describing behavioral contrasts observed among males of two macaque species, liontailed and cynomolgus macaques. The lion-tails demonstrated more interest in other animals, more vigilance and instrumental behavior, and more readily adapted to training to enter a small and unfamilar cage than the cynomolgus. These results suggest temperamental differences between the two species. Lion-tails may be characterized as bold, curious, and instrumental in their approach to the environment, while cynomolgus may be characterized as more passive or “reserved”. These differences may form the basis for the well-developed sensorimotor abilities observed in liontails such as the manufacture and use of tools, and may also be related to their highly omnivorous diet. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in certain populations are unusual in that they exhibit male-typical patterns of mounting behavior and sexual-partner preference. The goal of this study was to determine whether female Japanese macaques, from one such population, employ male-typical behavioral tactics to disrupt existing homosexual consortships, as well as to acquire and retain same-sex sexual partners. "Harassment" of homosexual consortships occurred when a sexually motivated, third-party male or female interrupted a consorting female couple by displacing or aggressing them. Sexual harassment was a male-typical strategy for disrupting existing homosexual consortships, but was rarely performed by females. "Intrusions" occurred when a male or female competitor attempted to acquire exclusive access to a female engaged in a homosexual consortship by targeting that female as the focus of competition and her partner as his/her competitor. "Sexual coercion" occurred when one individual alternately sexually solicited and aggressed another individual as part of the same behavioral sequence during an intrusion. Males employed consortship intrusions and sexual coercion when they attempted to acquire female sexual partners that were already engaged in homosexual consortships, but females rarely did so. However, females did employ male-typical patterns of aggressive competition and sexual coercion to retain same-sex sexual partners when confronted with male competitors' attempts to usurp those partners. These results indicate that female sexual activity during homosexual consortships is not uniformly "masculine" in expression, but rather is a mixture of male- and female-typical behaviors. 相似文献

Female chimpanzees mate promiscuously during a period of extended receptivity marked by prominent sexual swelling. Recent
studies of wild chimpanzees indicate that subtle variations in swelling size could act as a reliable cue of female fertilization
potential both within and between cycles (Emery and Whitten Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 54, 340–351, 2003; Deschner et al.
Hormones and Behavior, 46, 204–215, 2004). Copulation rates increase during the periovulatory period and during conception cycles (Deschner et al.
Hormones and Behavior, 46, 204–215, 2004; Emery Thompson American Journal of Primatology, 67, 137–158, 2005a), suggesting that males may be able to assess female fertilization potential. We asked whether facultative timing of copulation
in Kanyawara chimpanzees was due to increased male mating interest or to increased female proceptivity during the most fecund
days. We assessed multiple measures of male mating effort in cycles aligned relative to the day of detumescence and compared
periovulatory days to other days of maximal swelling, and conception cycles to nonconception cycles. The rate and proportion
of male initiative in soliciting sexual behavior increased during periods of highest fertilization potential. Males were also
more likely to interrupt copulations, associate with estrous females, and compete with other males when females were most
likely to conceive. Females initiated copulations more frequently during conception cycles but did not visibly shift mating
behavior within cycles. Our results support the hypothesis that male chimpanzees have the ability to assess the profitability
of mating attempts, a trait that may act as a counter-adaptation to female strategies to obscure paternity. We discuss potential
cues and the implications for female reproductive strategies. 相似文献

We present 12 years of perineal swelling data for a semifree-ranging colony of mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx), and evaluate the influence of rank, parity, and seasonality on reproductive parameters. Female sexual swellings showed a seasonal pattern, with August the median month of ovulation. Overlapping periovulatory periods did not decrease the likelihood of conception. Females showed their first genital swelling at age 3.6 years (n = 28; range, 3.2-4.6 years), and higher-ranking females experienced their first swelling earlier than low-ranking females. Median postpartum amenorrhea (PPA) duration was 208 days (n = 92; range, 74-538 days). PPA was longer in primiparous females than in multiparous females, but PPA duration was unrelated to female rank. Median follicular phase duration was 24 days for the first cycle after parturition (n = 84; range, 12-40 days), shortening to 17 days in subsequent cycles (n = 55; range, 6-39 days). The follicular phase was longer in nulliparous females than in parous females, but was unrelated to female rank. Median cycle length (from one sexual swelling breakdown to the next) was 38 days (n = 57; range, 18-108 days). Eighty-seven percent of conceptions occurred within two cycles, and half of the nulliparous females conceived during their first swelling cycle. Lower-ranking females were more likely to require more cycles to conceive than higher-ranking females. The cycling phase was significantly longer in nulliparous females than in parous females, and was also significantly longer in lower-ranking females than in higher-ranking females. We discuss the influence of provisioning on female reproductive parameters, the influence of parity and rank on the different phases of the interbirth interval, and the evolution of long and variable follicular phases in mandrills. 相似文献

One large social group of each of three species of macaques (Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, M. radiata), housed in half-acre field cages at the California Primate Research Center, were observed for a total of 150 h. Data on sexual behavior and dominance interactions were recorded by pairs of experienced observers using a focal animal technique. Single or multiple mount-to-ejaculation sequences, number of thrusts per mount, number of mounts per sequence, duration of mounts per sequence, duration of sequences, social rank and frequency of sexual activity were recorded for each adult male. M. mulatta used a multiple mount-to-ejaculation (MME) pattern in 91% of their copulations. M. radiata used a single mount-to-ejaculation (SME) pattern in 91% of their copulations. M. fascicularis used both patterns—53% MME and 47% SME. A positive correlation was found between rank and sexual activity in fascicularis and mulatta males. A negative correlation between rank and sexual activity was found in radiata males and also a positive correlation between rank and age indicating that the youngest and most subordinate radiata males were the most sexually active males. In reviewing the literature, a relationship between degree of intermale competition, intermale tolerance and type of mounting pattern was revealed. Macaque species that primarily use an SME pattern also show sa high degree of intermale tolerance and little interrnale competition. Macaque species that primarily use an MME pattern typically show a high degree of intermale competition and a low degree of intermale tolerance. Possible events leading to such relationships are discussed. 相似文献

Understanding the seasonal patterns of estrus cycle in caprine is crucial to develop the efficient breeding plans in the subtropics. Thus, the aim of the current research was to evaluate the effects of breeding season on hormonal profile and blood biochemical indices at different stages of estrus cycle in normal breeding or out-of-season breeding in goats. Forty-four Baladi goats were monitored for a period of eight months (July–February). Baladi goats exhibit a normal seasonal breeding (NS) at midsummer and continue through the autumn season (68%), with a considerable percentage of females having estrus signs during out-of-season (OS) period (32%). At the mid and late luteal phases of estrus cycles, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum progesterone level than that reported in the OS group (p = 0.013 and 0.039, respectively). At the estrus and late luteal phases of estrus cycles, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum β-estradiol level than that reported in the OS group (p = 0.022 and 0.001, respectively). Compared to the OS group, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum cholesterol at the mid and late luteal phases of estrus cycle (p = 0.001 and 0.016, respectively), and higher serum glucose level in the early luteal phase of the cycle (p = 0.009). In conclusion, the NS breeding goats had superior progesterone (mid-luteal and late luteal phases) and estradiol (estrus and late luteal phases) profiles than that reported in the OS group. This may indicate specific approaches to maintain the breeding efficiency of goats during the out-of-season period. 相似文献

The extent to which catharrine primate males are able to discern the fertile phase during the female ovarian cycle under natural conditions is still debated. In a recent study, we showed that wild male long-tailed macaques are able to detect the fertile phase, but the cues males used to assess female reproductive status remained unclear. In the present study, we tested female sex skin swelling and specific female behaviors for their reliability in signaling the fertile phase, as determined by measurement of fecal estrogens (E) and progestogens (P) during nine ovulatory cycles in seven free-ranging females. We found that changes in sex skin swellings showed a significant positive correlation to the E/P ratio, but swelling size did not significantly differ between cycle phases. In contrast, the frequency of two of the tested female behaviors, namely initiation of sexual interactions and reaching back for the male during copulation, was not only correlated with female reproductive hormones, but was significantly elevated during the fertile phase compared to nonfertile phases of the cycle. We thus conclude that female sex skin swelling does not reliably indicate the timing of the fertile phase in long-tailed macaques, whereas certain female behaviors do. Since cycles differed considerably in the number of males with which females had sexual interactions as well as in the number of sexual interactions with dominant males, the signaling character of these specific female behaviors appears to be robust against inconsistencies in these social variables. Female behavior might therefore play an important role in the recognition of the fertile phase by male macaques under natural conditions. 相似文献

Pink-to-red anogenital and facial sexual skin occurs in females of many primate species. Since female sexual skin color varies with reproductive state, it has long been assumed that color acts to stimulate male sexual interest. Although there is supportive evidence for this as regards anogenital skin, it is unclear whether this is also the case for facial sexual skin. In this study we experimentally manipulated digital facial and hindquarter images of female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) for color within the natural range of variation. The images were presented to adult male conspecifics to assess whether the males exhibited visual preferences for red vs. non-red female coloration, and whether preferences varied with anatomical region. The males displayed significantly longer gaze durations in response to reddened versions of female hindquarters, but not to reddened versions of faces. This suggests that female facial coloration may serve an alternative purpose to that of attracting males, and that the signal function of sexual skin and the intended recipients may vary across anatomical regions. 相似文献

A substantial proportion of the wild lion-tailed macaque population occurs in Karnataka State, India. In this paper, problems of protecting the macaques and their habitats are discussed. Fairly large portions of the Karnataka habitat remain available. These are free of large-scale shrinkage in area, but are experiencing deterioration in quality due to pressures from enclaves of human settlements, from developmental projects, and from timber/minor forest produce extraction. Illegal hunting is another threat to the population. A pragmatic, cost-effective approach to conservation of rain forest habitats, centered around protection of nature reserves, with the lion-tailed macaque as a flagship species, as opposed to a strategy based on captive propagation, is advocated. 相似文献

A field study of wild mountain gorillas was conducted to elucidate details of sexual initiation required for an interpretation
of the increased frequency of copulation during the menstrual cycle, in comparison to the wild, that occurs when this species
is tested in traditional laboratory pair tests. Although females in the wild played a clear role in establishing and maintaining
proximity to the male and assertively presenting for copulation, all female presenting was preceded by some form of behavior
by the male. Of particular relevance were several components of the male’s chest-beat display that had been observed at much
higher frequencies in the laboratory tests. Although originally described as male aggression in the laboratory tests, such
behavior now appears to be male sexual initiative, elicited by female proximity. The exaggerated form and frequency of the
display in the laboratory, and the increased copulation during the cycle that ensued, are likely due to (1) placing females
in proximity to a male daily, rather than on 2–3 days of estrus as occurs in the wild, and (2) the inability of the female
in the laboratory to withdraw from male proximity during pair tests in a single cage. In addition to clarifying the data on
laboratory pair tests, the data on wild gorillas have relevance to the captive breeding of gorillas. 相似文献

This paper reports a systematic pattern of homosexual incest avoidance among females in a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) culled from the Arashiyama-West troop known for its high rates of female homosexuality. The study group included three matrilines and two generations. Between eight and 11 females were sexually active over four consecutive mating seasons, and all engaged in both heterosexual and homosexual activity. While all females performed homosexual acts with almost all possible non-kin partners, they systematically avoided homosexual interactions with their mother, daughters, and sisters. This pattern could not be explained either in terms of kin not being simultaneously in estrus, kin avoiding affiliative interactions in general, or non-kin utilizing the tension-reducing effect of estrus to affiliate exclusively with each other. In contrast to homosexual females, heterosexual pairs of relatives (brother-sister, mother-son) were sometimes incestuous. Assuming that female homosexuality expresses the reproductive strategy of females unconstrained by male influence, the present results point to the strong tendency of females to avoid incest and suggest that males are primarily responsible for the reported exceptions to incest avoidance. 相似文献

Affiliative interference in mounts was studied in a group of Tonkean macaques (Macaca tonkeana) living in semi-liberty. Over a 4-year period, 545 sexual and noncopulatory mounts accompanied by 367 instances of interference were recorded using behavior-dependent sampling. Interference by immature individuals was frequent and occurred mainly when the mother was the mountee. Interference by adult females was less common. Various behavior patterns were displayed in interference, mainly directed toward the mounter. Aggression by the latter was rare. However, interference occurred from further away with increasing age of the interfering individual. It is suggested that interference represents an attempt to be involved in interactions with influential individuals. Comparisons with other species support the hypothesis that the development of interference is related to species-typical social relationships and, in particular, that frequency and intensity of interference are determined by the tolerance of adult males. 相似文献

In previous studies, central administration of the oxytocin (OT) antagonist d(CH2)5[Tyr(Me)2, Thr4, Tyr-NH(9)2]OVT (OTA1) blocked receptive and proceptive components of female sexual behavior (FSB) and increased male-directed agonistic behavior when given before progesterone (P) treatment in estradiol-primed female rats but not when given shortly before behavioral testing 4-6 h after P. Because the considerable V(1a) antagonist potency of OTA1 may have contributed to these results, we tested the effects of the far more selective OT antagonist desGly-NH2, d(CH2)5[d-Tyr2, Thr4]OVT (OTA2). In ovariectomized, estradiol benzoate-primed (1 microg x 2 days sc) rats, icv infusion of OTA2 (1 microg) prior to P injection (250 microg sc) significantly suppressed lordosis and hops and darts and trended toward significantly increasing male-directed kicks during testing at 4 and 6 h. Infusion of OTA2 3 h and 40 min after P did not alter behavior at 4 and 6 h after P but significantly decreased lordosis as well as hops and darts and increased male-directed kicks 8-12 h after P. These results provide further evidence that central OT receptor activation shortly after P treatment contributes to the subsequent onset and early expression of FSB and demonstrate, for the first time, that OT receptor activation at later time points also contributes to maintaining FSB. The FSB-stimulating effect of central OT appears to persist for several hours. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate behavioral and physiological parameters of reproduction in a breeding colony of pygmy lorises. To this end, nine male and eight female adult pygmy lorises were kept under natural lighting conditions and monitored through five consecutive breeding seasons. Behavioral data were collected continuously throughout the year on all loris pairs. Behaviors associated with estrogen peaks in females included approaches, leaves, and lunges by females. Whistles were more frequent during estrus, but there was high inter‐individual variability. Males responded to estrous females by persistent following. There was a higher percentage of births in pairs that were together for more than 30 days before onset of estrus, compared with pairs that were put together when females came into estrus. However, these results may have been influenced by factors such as previous familiarity and social compatibility. Fecal testosterone levels were measured using radioimmunoassays and correlated with estrogen peaks and labial swelling of the females. The data showed an annual rhythm in testosterone that was consistent with a July–August mating season. Captive births were significantly higher during January–April than they were during any other months of the year. The earliest testosterone peak in a juvenile male was detected at 58 weeks, while the youngest male to sire offspring was 73 weeks of age at the time of the conception. In species in which paternal care has an important impact on the offspring's fitness, concealment of reproductive status has been proposed as a strategy employed by females to prevent males from practicing desertion and polygamy, which would then lead to monogamous or polyandrous mating systems or both. We investigated whether the female's reproductive status is being concealed in golden-headed lion tamarins, which exhibit extensive paternal care and a mainly monogamous/polyandrous mating system. We used a combination of behavioral observations and endocrine data to determine female reproductive status and to examine changes in sociosexual behaviors over the ovarian cycle and between conceptive and nonconceptive cycles. Females clearly signaled their reproductive status by way of proceptive sexual presenting. Males showed increased frequencies of anogenital sniffing and mounting during the fertile period, indicating that they detected changes in olfactory and behavioral cues emitted by females, and they adjusted their mounting behavior accordingly. Males and females also remained in closer proximity before and during the fertile period, which suggests the existence of mate guarding. We discuss a possible function of behavioral advertisement of reproductive status in shaping the mating system in Leontopithecus chrysomelas. 相似文献

Gray-cheeked mangabeys live in multimale social groups. Two groups of these monkeys were studied extensively over a period
of 22 months, and a further eight groups were observed opportunistically. Data on the occurrence of sexual swelling infernales
were collected and the different phases of swelling and deflation are described in detail together with data on their duration.
The data were found to agree broadly with those presented by other workers on captive animals. Pre and postpartum swellings
are described. The majority of copulations was observed to occur at peak swelling and a specific gesture, the head flag, was
noted as a solicitation. The data on initiation of copulations show that the males initiated more copulations than the females.
However, female-initiated copulations ended in ejaculation more often than male-initiated copulations. The behaviors of the
mangabeys during precopulation and copulation were found to be broadly similar to those of the macaque. Copulations were observed
most often on the day of peak swelling;however, adult males were the only animals to copulate prior to peak swelling. Subadult male copulations were most often after
peak swelling. Masturbation was observed to ejaculation on two occasions. The data show gestation periods of between 184 and
189 days. A mean interbirth interval was calculated to be 33.33 ± 15.87 months. 相似文献

Behavioral and adrenocortical responses of male cynomolgus and lion-tailed macaques to social stimulation and group formation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Several recent studies indicate that primate species may differ in behavioral, and in some instances physiological, responses
to social manipulations. These differences in response dispositions have been interpreted as being based on temperamental
differences among species. This report extends previous comparative studies of macaques by describing behavioral contrasts
observed between males of two macaque species, lion-tailed and cynomolgus macaques, in response to social manipulations. Males
were exposed to a mirror, then visually exposed to conspecific neighbors in all pairwise combinations, and then formed into
conspecific social groups. Urine samples were collected in the pairing and group formation conditions for cortisol assay.
The cynomolgus demonstrated more affiliative behavior than the lion-tails in all conditions, while the lion-tails tended to
exhibit more aggressive behavior. Following group formation cortisol values showed a decreasing trend in the cynomolgus, but
not in the lion-tails. The cynomolgus rapidly adapted to group living and relations between them were primarily affiliative.
In contrast, no affiliative behavior was ever observed in the lion-tail group, which appeared to be highly stressed by group
living and was eventually disbanded. 相似文献

Energy consumption is critical for the energetically expensive processes related to reproduction, and thus, mechanisms that increase ingestive behavior are directly linked to reproductive success. Similarly, the mechanisms that inhibit hunger and ingestive behavior might be most adaptive when these mechanisms cause individuals to stop foraging, hoarding and eating in order to find and court potential mates. In the laboratory, ingestive behaviors are typically studied separately from reproductive behaviors even though it is likely that these behaviors evolved under conditions in which both food and mates were available. We examined the choice between paracopulatory and ingestive behaviors in a semi-natural environment in which both food and potential mates were available. Intact female Syrian hamsters showed a high preference for males on days 3 and 4 (day 4 being the day of ovulation and estrous behavior), and a 48-h period of food deprivation significantly decreased preference for sex and increased preference for eating and food hoarding on day 3 in 89% of the hamsters, although none became anestrous. The same period of food deprivation significantly decreased the level of vaginal marking without significant effects on plasma estradiol concentrations. Next, hamsters were either food deprived (FD) or fed ad libitum, and half of each group was treated with vehicle or the adipocyte hormone leptin. The percentage of females with a low preference for sex was significantly greater in the FD compared to the ad libitum-fed groups, and leptin treatment prevented this effect. Metabolic fuels, possibly acting through leptin and other hormones, might influence sensitivity to estradiol or enhance the downstream effects of estradiol, thereby increasing motivation for sex and decreasing the relative motivation to forage, hoard and eat food. 相似文献
