The performance of three species of trichogrammatids on the pest, Helicoverpa armigera was evaluated in the laboratory and screenhouse conditions in Karnataka, India during 1996-97. Laboratory studies indicated that Trichogramma chilonis and Trichogramma pretiosum were more effective parasitoids of H. armigera than Trichogramma brasiliense. In screenhouse conditions, T. chilonis was the most effective parasitoid of H. armigera eggs on sunflower plants in comparison to the other two trichogrammatid species. When releasing 50?000 per ha on sunflower and redgram, T. chilonis parasitised 50.1 and 11.4% H. armigera eggs, respectively. The position of H. armigera eggs on different plant parts of sunflower had no effect on parasitism by T. chilonis. However, parasitism by the same trichogrammatid among different plant parts of redgram varied significantly. It parasitized 43.4 and 18.7% H. armigera eggs on leaves and flowers, respectively, and significantly fewer, 3.9%, on pods (P<0.05). The growth stage of redgram plants also had an effect on parasitism by T. chilonis, parasitism being extremely low on plants with pods.  相似文献

We studied ovipositional synergists and artificial diets for rearing Trichogramma australicum. Artificial "diet A" included 40% haemolymph of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) final instar larvae, 30% of a 10% malt solution in deionised water, 20% chicken egg yolk and 10% Neisenheimer's salt solution with 76 units Penicillin and 76 units Streptomycin/ml diet. Artificial "diet B" was identical except Grace's insect medium® replaced Neisenheimer's salt solution. the number of T. australicum larvae in artificial eggs filled with diet A and diet B was not significantly different (P > 0.05). Significantly fewer (P < 0.05) larvae developed to pupae and adults in artificial eggs filled with diet A. Quantity and quality of artificial diet affected the mortality of T. australicum larvae reared in vitro. Ovipositional synergists included 10% gelatine solution, 10% polyvinyl alcohol solution or 1% agar solution in deionised water. Synergist test-solutions were individually smeared on the external surface of artificial eggs (hemispherical depressions in plastic membrane). Eggs laid and number of T. australicum larvae produced were significantly higher in artificial eggs smeared with gelatine than artificial eggs smeared with polyvinyl alcohol, agar or non-smeared (control) eggs.  相似文献

The yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas Walker (YSB), infested rice plants emit chemicals through the surface of their infested stems. These induce attractant activity and cause arrestment responses and ovipositional stimulation in its egg parasitoid, Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead. Laboratory experiments on short‐range host searching and oviposition were performed to assess the how these crude stem extracts and their fractions influence the biological control efficiency of Trichogramma. The activity of these chemicals as long‐range attractants was confirmed through wind tunnel bioassays. Stem borer‐infested plant extracts had enhanced the parasitization rate of T. japonicum, whereas host eggs treated with the extract from undamaged stems or solvent‐treated control failed to evoke changes in the parasitoid’s behaviour. A preliminary GC‐MASS analysis indicated the presence of several hydrocarbon compounds. The analysis also revealed qualitative and quantitative differences between the chemical profiles of the infested and non‐infested plants. We hypothesized that herbivore‐induced plant chemicals are released through the stem surfaces and attract T. japonicum, even over long distances. These cues elicit parasitoid arrestment on pest‐damaged plants and subsequently lead to the successful parasitization of the stem borer.  相似文献

Trichogramma platneri oviposition behavior on Amorbia cuneana egg masses was investigated under laboratory conditions. No relationship was detected between host surface area, number of edge turning on host eggs, and parasitoid clutch size. It was also observed that females parasitized the egg mass randomly by drilling into the egg mass and parasitizing individual eggs without using stereotypical behaviors to assess individual hosts (i.e. drumming and turning). However, clutch size did change due to ovipositional experience as naïve wasps with little or no ovipositional experience (<6 eggs parasitized), allocated significantly more progeny per host than wasps with longer ovipositional experience (24-h oviposition experience on a single egg mass). Moreover, naïve wasps parasitized significantly more eggs on the outer edge of the egg mass than experienced wasps. We contend that the physical characteristics of A. cuneana eggs and egg masses preclude T. platneri from completely discriminating between individual eggs. However, because T. platneri may be using kairomones from the egg mass, this described oviposition strategy remains effective.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to assess the suitability of two artificial diets for egg laying and development of Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner, Trichogrammatoidea annulata De Santis, and Trichogramma bruni Nagaraja (all Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Additionally, the quality of wasps reared in vitro was compared with those reared in vivo. The ‘standard’ diet consisted of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) pupal holotissues (65%), chicken egg yolk (18%), fetal bovine serum (8.5%), lactalbumin hydrolysate (8.5%), and anticontaminants (0.3%). The ‘modified’ diet differed from the standard one only in the D. saccharalis pupal holotissues, that were replaced with Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) ones. Females of the three trichogrammatid species laid eggs in artificial eggs containing any artificial medium, but the modified one received more eggs. Although the standard diet was accepted for oviposition by the three wasp species, no development occurred. On the modified diet, only T. atopovirilia was able to develop to adult emergence. Adult F1 were of a quality that was similar to insects reared in vivo.  相似文献

The reproductive attributes of commercially-produced Trichogramma platneri, T. minutum and T. pretiosum reared from eggs of both Ephestia kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella were monitored at 25 C. The age-specific fecundity, longevity and progeny sex ratio and adult size were determined for individual females from all six combinations of Trichogramma and rearing host, using E. kuehniella as the experimental host. Rearing host had a significant influence on the lifetime fecundity, 3-day fecundity and longevity of all three Trichogramma species. In general, the performance of T. minutum and T. pretiosum was better when reared from S. cerealella, but that of T. platneri was superior when reared from E. kuehniella. The lifetime fecundity of the Trichogramma species was linearly related to longevity and the ranking between species was T. pretiosum > T. minutum > T. platneri. The age-specific pattern of oviposition for T. platneri was distinctly precocious, with 40% of its lifetime fecundity oviposited on the first day, in contrast to 17-24% for the other two species. Progeny sex ratio over the lifetime of the Trichogramma females was slightly male biased and differed significantly from 0.5 for T. minutum and T. platneri. Daily sex ratio for parasitoids reared from the most productive rearing host was female biased only for the first day of oviposition for T. platneri in contrast to the first 5-6 days of oviposition for the other two species. There was little evidence that any of the reproductive attributes of these Trichogramma species, reared from small host eggs, was dependent on the size of the adult females.  相似文献

The effects of experience, egg load, and wasp size on the response of four strains of Trichogramma nr. brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) to three economically important hosts, Heliothis punctigera (Noctuidae), Phthorimaea opercullela (Gelechiidae), and Sitotroga cereallela (Gelechiidae) were investigated. Experience effects due to rearing host and oviposition were considered in all combinations of host species. Both these effects altered response levels to low-ranked hosts but not to highly preferred hosts. Size was correlated with host response in some strains; larger females took more encounters with a host before accepting it, while egg load was not correlated with number of host encounters. However, egg load, rearing host, and size all affected acceptance of the low-ranked host S. cereallela. Females were more likely to accept this host if they were reared on S. cereallela, had a small size, and had a high egg load. Effects were consistent across strains, although overall acceptance levels differed among strains.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare pupal holotissues (Diatraea saccharalis, Anticarsia gemmatalis,andBombyx mori) and larval hemolymph of several moth species (Helicoverpa zeaandBombyx mori) commonly produced in Brazilian laboratories as components of artificial diets forin vitrorearing ofTrichogramma galloiandTrichogramma pretiosum.Diets based on larval hemolymph ofH. zeaproduced the best development of both natural enemies, although a diet with pupal holotissues ofB. moriallowed full development ofT. pretiosum.Amino acid analysis showed qualitative differences among the insect derivates and eggs of the natural and alternative hosts, but with a quantitative similarity. The parasitism rates by Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) using Ephestia kuehniella Zell. (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) eggs held at 0, 4 and 8°C and for up to 31 days was measured. Parasitism was lowest on eggs held at 8°C and highest on eggs held at 0°C. The highest parasitism, 97.8%, was measured for parasitoids attacking eggs held for 3 days and stored at 0°C. Parasitism of eggs stored at all three temperatures decreased with increasing duration of storage. The number of T. cacoeciae successfully developing and emerging as adults after storage in E. kuehniella eggs held at 0, 4 and 8°C was measured. Parasitoid emergence was >83% from E. kuehniella eggs stored at 8°C for 3 weeks. Storage at 0°C caused a significant decline in parasitoid emergence after 2 weeks (P<0.05). Storage at 0°C for more than 4 weeks reduced fecundity by 50%. T. cacoeciae parasitized the highest number of E. kuehniella eggs 1 day after adult emergence. The oviposition period lasted 6–7 days, although the parasitoids lived up to 13–14 days. Impact of storage time and temperature on parasitism rates by T. cacoeciae stored while in E. kuehniella eggs was measured. As storage time and temperature increased, subsequent parasitism rates of resulting adult T. cacoeciae decreased. Eggs of E. kuehniella can be stored at 0°C for up to 31 days. Trichogramma cacoeciae developing in eggs of E. kuehniella can be stored at 4°C for up to 5 weeks prior to release.  相似文献

Four Trichogramma species were recovered in the field from eggs of carob moth, Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The oviposition rates of Trichogramma oleae, Trichogramma cacoeciae, Trichogramma evanescens and Trichogramma bourarachae were compared when presented either E. ceratoniae or Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). An experimental ‘closed’ rearing system, where egg and larval manipulations were eliminated, was developed for the in vitro rearing of Catolaccus grandis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) Burks, an important ectoparasitoid of the cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman. In this rearing model, n-hexane (a synthetic ovipositional stimulant for this parasitoid), was smeared on the Parafilm® cover of a modified rearing chamber (a Multiwell®) tissue culture plate) to induce the deposition of uncontaminated eggs, on the inner side of this waxy membrane, and on or around an agar retained diet that had been dispensed into the individual chamber wells. When the efficiency of the in vitro rearing system was compared to the current in vivo rearing method for this species, the duration of the life cycle was significantly shorter in parasitoids reared in vivo, but this difference was less than one day (17.8 vs 17.1 days, respectively). On the other hand, the number of eggs laid in the in vitro rearing chamber during a 4 h period was c. 2.5 times greater than in the conventional in vivo rearing apparatus, and adult yields were c. 25% greater when using the in vitro closed rearing method. Male to female ratios were c. 1:9 when reared in vitro as compared to 1.0:1.5 for those reared in vivo. There were no apparent adverse effects of this in vitro rearing system on the parasitoid's general behavior and reproduction after two consecutive generations.  相似文献

Ovipositional stimulants and diets were tested in vitro using several rearing methods to determine effects on the growth and development of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley. Highest yields of pupae were obtained when Manduca sexta (L.) hemolymph was added to a chicken egg yolk and milk diet. However, this hemolymph based diet (BD) produced low yields (6–7%) of adults. When a similar diet containing 20% M. sexta egg liquid (BDE) was used, the yields of adults increased 7–13 fold to as high as 75.9%. For T. pretiosum reared on the BDE diet in microtiter plates, the adult yields were 46.9 and 63.6%, respectively, when the ovipositional stimulants were either the KCl-MgSO4 solution or the BDE diet. Thus, the harmful effects of the salt oviposition solution were significant but perhaps not so great as to prevent the use of this technique for in vitro mass production of T. pretiosum. Although the ovipositional salt solution reduced adult yields, the effect was much smaller than the nutritional or physiological effect of deleting M. sexta egg liquid from the diet.
Résumé Une faible production de nymphes de Trichogramma pretiosum Riley a été obtenue quand le substrat alimentaire était de l'hémolymphe de Manduca sexta L. Un régime (BD) comprenant de l'hémolymphe, du jaune d'oeuf et du lait a donné une bonne production de nymphes mais une faible production d'adultes. L'addition de 20% de contenu d'oeufs de M. sexta en régime BD a donné jusqu'à 75,9% d'adultes. Quand l'exposition des oeufs de T. pretiosum a une solution stimulant la ponte (0,68% KCl, 0,60% MgSO4, 7H2O) a dépassé 6 h à 27°C, la survie des oeufs a été sérieusement affectée. Des expositions plus courtes ont été indispensables au succès de l'élevage in vitro; cependant l'exposition aux solutions salines a réduit la production d'adultes. Cet effet a été partiellement maîtrisé par l'addition du contenu d'oeufs au régime artificiel. Les effets négatifs de la solution saline ont été faibles en comparaison de la saisissante augmentation de la production d'adultes due à l'addition du contenu d'oeufs de M. sexta au régime à base d'hémolymphe (BD). Nous en concluons (1) que la présence de constituants des oeufs de l'hôte dans les régimes artificiels a provoqué les productions élevées indiquées par les autres auteurs utilisant des régimes à base d'hémolymphe; (2) que T. pretiosum et T. dendrolimi Matsumura ont des besoins nutritifs différents puisque d'autres auteurs ont obtenu des productions élevées de T. dendrolimi adultes avec des régimes alimentaires privés d'extraits d'oeufs. Sur les trois techniques d'élevage in vitro utilisées, la méthode dite de goutte multiple a donné les productions de nymphes et d'adultes de T. pretiosum les plus élevées et présente plusiers autres avantages significatifs. La production de masse in vitro de T. pretiosum dépend maintenant de l'identification et de la synthèse des facteurs de croissance contenus dans l'hémolymphe et les oeufs.

Summary Contact kairomones and oviposition in a host egg stimulated arrestment behaviour in Trichogramma evanescens, characterised by a reduction in walking speed and increased turning. Previous oviposition experience did not influence a parasitoid's response to contact kairomones, but successive encounters with kairomone patches resulted in parasitoids habituating to the contact chemical. Oviposition on a kairomone patch did not reverse this habituation effect. It was concluded that contact kairomones and host eggs will both contribute independently to the duration of a patch visit. The selection of patches by T. evanescens will depend on its response to kairomones. Results from this study indicate that the application of contact kairomones to field crops will not necessarily increase the probability of parasitoids finding hosts.  相似文献

Citrus peel physicochemical attributes are considered the main components conferring partial or even total resistance to fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) infestation. Fruit fly females adapt their ovipositional strategies to overcome such resistance. Here, we explored the effects of citrus species (Rutaceae) on the ovipositional behaviour of the South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), and on its immature development. Particularly, we investigated the effects of (1) citrus species on oviposition behaviour and immature development, (2) citrus species on oviposition preference and on the location of the eggs at different depth in the citrus peel, and (3) harvest season and post‐harvest storage time on oviposition behaviour and immature development in lemon. Citrus species influenced ovipositional behaviour and affected survival of immature stages. Females laid eggs in lemon [Citrus limon (L.) Burm.], orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck], and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfadyen). In orange and lemon, larvae were found dead close to the oviposition areas, suggesting chemically mediated resistance mechanisms. Under choice conditions, females preferred grapefruit over lemon and bigger clutches were found in the layers where embryonic development is favoured. Unsuitability of lemon as a medium to complete development was neither affected by harvest season nor by storage time of the fruit after harvest. The physical and chemical characteristics of the peel were distinctive to each citrus species and may have affected the specific levels of resistance of these citrus species to infestation by A. fraterculus.  相似文献

Pristhesancus plagipennis (Walker) is a predator of larvae and nymphs of many pestiferous insects for which natural enemies are not commercially available. This paper describes a containerized mass-rearing method for P. plagipennis using hot water-killed larvae of Tenebrio molitor (L.) and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). In addition, the effect of P. plagipennis density during nymphal rearing and adult oviposition was investigated. The rearing method minimizes P. plagipennis cannibalism, avoids the need for live insect prey, and is space and labor efficient. Larvae of the yellow mealworm, T. molitor, were the most suitable prey for minimizing nymphal development time and mortality while producing insects with the highest body weight. When reared on a diet of T. molitor, the optimum rearing density was 20–27 nymphs per 5-liter container. This rearing density minimized nymphal mortality to 16–22%. The optimum density for oviposition was 16 adults per 5-liter container, which provided the best compromise between egg production and space utilization.  相似文献

We produced an ethogram for and investigated effects of physiological condition and experience on oviposition behaviour for Trichogramma australicum on Helicoverpa armigera eggs. The data, coupled with the ethogram, have enabled the establishment of standard behavioural categories which can be used to assess acceptability of H. armigera eggs to T. australicum reared in vitro or in eggs of other species. Physiological and experiential conditions were investigated using females of three different ages (0–24, 24–48 and 48–72 h old), two types of sexual states (mated and unmated) and two types of ovipositional experience (naive and experienced). Durations of host finding, host examination, and post-ovipositional re-examination were reduced by oviposition experience and were shorter in younger females (0–48 h old). Oviposition experience reduces the duration of the drilling and percentage of females host-feeding. Being mated and young reduces the host examination time in subsequent oviposition bouts. Only ovipositionally inexperienced females host-feed before oviposition and host-fed more frequently than experienced individuals after oviposition. Host-feeding needs consideration for optimal culture.  相似文献

Trichogramma wasps are generalist egg parasitoids used in biological control efforts. In a multi host situation they may preferentially parasitize a non-target host species to the detriment of the control program. Plutella xylostella Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a very serious pest of cabbage, but is only one in a number of species in the ‘cabbageworm’ complex. We investigated the host preferences of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) when offered the eggs of Plutella xylostella and the eggs of Pseudoplusia includens Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), another species in the ‘cabbageworm’ complex. Trichogramma pretiosum reared on the eggs of the factitious host Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) parasitized both Plutella xylostella and Pseudoplusia includens eggs under laboratory conditions. For both choice and no-choice experiments, T. pretiosum parasitized significantly more P. xylostella eggs than P. includens eggs. Prior ovipositional experience with one or other of the two host species had no effect on the subsequent parasitism levels of the two host species. The preference for P. xylostella eggs was also not affected by this prior ovipositional experience.  相似文献

The behavioral strategies evolved by insect parasitoids to optimize their foraging efforts have been the subject of many theoretical and empirical studies. However, the effects competition may have on these strategies, especially for species that do not engage in antagonistic behaviors, have received little attention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition on patch exploitation strategies by two non‐aggressive species, Trichogramma pintoi Voegelé and Trichogramma minutum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), both generalist egg parasitoids. We analyzed the patch residence times of females, their patch‐leaving mechanisms, and the sex allocation of their progeny while foraging either alone, with an intraspecific competitor, or with an interspecific competitor. To some extent, each species responded differently to the presence of a competitor in the patch. Trichogramma pintoi females did not change their patch‐leaving mechanisms in response to competition and behaved as if under an exploitative competition regime, whereas T. minutum females did change their patch‐leaving mechanisms in response to competition and remained longer in the host patch than expected. Antennal rejection, and not oviposition, was the proximate behavioral mechanism underlying patch‐leaving decisions by both species. Neither species adjusted the sex allocation of their progeny in response to competition. These results indicate that the effects of competition differ even among closely related parasitoid species.  相似文献
