We make the first attempt to construct a qualitative theory covering the whole process of the major part of the first heart sound from an electrical activation to the phonocardiographic observations at the thorax. We calculate the amplitudes and frequencies of the radiated pressures during the isovolumetric contraction period generated by the muscular wall of the left ventricle and by the valves considered as a spherical shell and two-dimensional membranes, respectively. The analysis shows that both the hemodynamic and the valvular theory are able to explain most of the characteristic features of the first heart sound (linear relation between the amplitudes of the radiated pressure and the slope of the left ventricular pressure-time curve; directional polarity of the amplitudes; equidistant frequency peaks with a decline in amplitudes). However, existing magnitudes of the set of physiological parameters involved seems to favour the hemodynamic theory of the first heart sound. The aortic valve can be neglected as a source of sound. The initial conditions (like valve closure velocity), according to our theory, cannot be important. The predicted time-plot and frequency spectrum of the radiated pressure show a general resemblance with the recorded ones. It is essential to have considerably more quantitative acoustic data both for normal and diseased hearts for subsequent theoretical development.  相似文献

In this article, the spectral features of first heart sounds (S1) and second heart sounds (S2), which comprise the mechanical heart valve sounds obtained after aortic valve replacement (AVR) and mitral valve replacement (MVR), are compared to find out the effect of mechanical heart valve replacement and recording area on S1 and S2. For this aim, the Welch method and the autoregressive (AR) method are applied on the S1 and S2 taken from 66 recordings of 8 patients with AVR and 98 recordings from 11 patients with MVR, thereby yielding power spectrum of the heart sounds. Three features relating to frequency of heart sounds and three features relating to energy of heart sounds are obtained. Results show that in comparison to natural heart valves, mechanical heart valves contain higher frequency components and energy, and energy and frequency components do not show common behaviour for either AVR or MVR depending on the recording areas. Aside from the frequency content and energy of the sound generated by mechanical heart valves being affected by the structure of the lungs–thorax and the recording areas, the pressure across the valve incurred during AVR or MVR is a significant factor in determining the frequency and energy levels of the valve sound produced. Though studies on native heart sounds as a non-invasive diagnostic method has been done for many years, it is observed that studies on mechanical heart valves sounds are limited. The results of this paper will contribute to other studies on using a non-invasive method for assessing the mechanical heart valve sounds.  相似文献

The crop area planted to conventional soybeans has decreased annually while that planted to glyphosate-resistant (RR) soybean has drastically increased mainly due to the wide adoption of glyphosate in current weed management systems. With the extensive use of glyphosate, many farmers have noted visual plant injury in RR soybean varieties after glyphosate application. A new generation designated as “second generation—RR2” has been recently developed and these RR2 cultivars already are commercially available for farmers and promoted as higher yielding relative to the previous RR cultivars. However, little information is currently available about the performance of RR2 soybean beyond commercial and farmer testimonial data. Thus, an evaluation of different glyphosate rates applied in different growth stages of the first and second generation of RR soybeans, revealed a significant decrease in photosynthesis. In general, increased glyphosate rate and late applications (V6) pronounced decrease photosynthetic parameters and consequently decreased in leaf area and shoot biomass production. In contrast, low rate and early applications were less damage for the RR soybean plants, suggesting that with early applications (V2), plants probably have more time to recover from glyphosate or its metabolites effects regarding late applications.  相似文献

Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined against 662 recent clinical isolates for eight cephalosporins representing first, second and third generation compounds. All four third-generation cephalosporins tested (cefoperaxone, cefotaxime, ceftazidime and moxalactam) were significantly more active against aerobic gram-negative bacteria than the older compounds (cephalothin, cefamandole, cefoxitin, and cefuroxime). Cefotaxime and moxalactam were most active against Enterobacteriaceae with extremely low MIC-values. Ceftazidime was definitely most active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with more than 90% of strains inhibited at 4 micro g/ml. MIC-values for cefotaxime against Staphylococcus aureus were for all strains 1-2 micro g/ml, slightly higher for cefoperazone, while the effect of ceftazidime and moxalactam was more limited. All third generation cephalosporins demonstrated efficiency against Streptococcus pyogenes, cefotaxime being most active and moxalactam least active, but were essentially ineffective against Streptococcus faecalis. Moxalactam demonstrated higher activity against Bacteroides fragilis than other second and third generation cephalosporins including cefoxitin. Previous studies have demonstrated a very high activity of all third generation cephalosporins against Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including beta-lactamase producing strains.  相似文献

Methods for development of bioengineering systems of different types useful in synthesis and transformation of antibiotics are discussed. It was shown that in development of monoenzymatic biocatalysts on the basis of immobilized cells and in preparation of immobilized cultures producing secondary metabolites with enzymological engineering directed action on the cells could be provided which made it possible to establish highly efficient bioengineering systems. Various means for providing the directed action and method for estimation of the carrier-culture interation are proposed. The prospects of using the second generation biocatalysts in improvement of the processes for production of antibiotics are described.  相似文献

Hybrids between related species vary widely in relative fitness, and that fitness can depend upon the environment. We investigated aspects of physiology that might influence fitness patterns in a plant hybrid zone. Seeds of Ipomopsis aggregata, I. tenuituba, F1 hybrids, F2 hybrids, and offspring of crosses between natural hybrids were planted into the relatively mesic site of origin for I. aggregata and the drier site for natural hybrids. We measured rates of photosynthesis (A max), transpiration (E), instantaneous (A/E) and long-term (δ13C) indices of water use efficiency (WUE), and leaf nitrogen and carbon. We also examined correlations of these traits with plant size. Photosynthetic rate and A/E were higher in vegetative than flowering plants. WUE varied between sites and years, but differences among genotypic classes were spatially and temporally consistent. Instantaneous WUE was higher for F1 hybrids than for the average of the parental species, thereby showing heterosis. There was no evidence of hybrid breakdown, as WUE was no different in the F2 than the average across the F1 and parental species. Nor did WUE depend on cross direction in producing F1 progeny. Carbon isotope discrimination revealed higher long-term water use efficiency in I. tenuituba than I. aggregata. Leaf nitrogen was higher in I. tenuituba than I. aggregata, and higher in offspring of natural hybrids than in the F2. Results indicate heterosis for water use efficiency, with no hybrid breakdown. Heterosis in WUE may help to explain the relatively high survival of both reciprocal F1 hybrids in dry sites within the natural hybrid zone.  相似文献

We determined the "in vivo" (arterial pH and PCO2) and standard (pH = 7.4, PCO2 = 40 mm Hg) PO2 at 50% O2 saturation of hemoglobin (P50, vv and P50, st) in Wistar albino rats when living in a normobaric hypoxic environment. Two generations of hypoxic rats were observed for changes in their P50, vv, P50, st, (n50) 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), hemoglobin (Hb) and DPG-Hb ratio: the first generation (H1) and the second generation (H2). A few hours after birth, the H1 rats were placed and raised in a normobaric hypoxic environment (10% O2 in N2). The H2 rats were born from hypoxic parents of first generation and were raised in the same hypoxic environment. The control group had a normoxic environment. The P50, st was significantly higher in H1 rats than both H2 and controls. P50, st was similar in H2 and control rats. The P50, vv was significantly higher in H1 rats than both H2 and controls but it was significantly lower in H2 when compared with both controls and H1. Hb and 2,3-DPG had values significantly greater for both H1 and H2 when compared with their controls. However, the values of H2 were significantly lower than H1. The effectiveness of an increase in Hb-O2 affinity as an adaptive mechanism in H2 rats is discussed.  相似文献

A simple mathematical model of first and second degree heart block is developed on the assumption that eachR wave, with its associated ventricular contraction, results in the release of a substance which raises the excitation threshold of the conducting tissue lying between theS-A andA-V nodes. The conduction pathway is represented by a chain of excitatory elements, the first member of which is acted upon by a regularly occurringP wave. The rate constant of the removal of this inhibitory substance, i.e., recovery rate, is the only constant necessary to be varied in order to pass from normal to first degree block to second degree. In this latter case one can predict the progressive increase inP-R interval until anR wave is missed, as occurs in the Wenckebach phenomenon. The model indicates that an increasedP wave frequency which would have little effect on theP-R inerval for a normal individual with rapid recovery, could produce a Wenckebach pattern in an individual with even a mild first degree block.  相似文献

Maternal treatment with diethylstilbestrol (DES) during pregnancy can produce vaginal adenocarcinoma and other abnormalities of the vagina in her daughters when they reach adolescence or adulthood, miscarriages and absence of full term infants. Concerning malformations in newborns whose mothers were treated with DES, clitoromegaly and malformations of the uterus were reported in females and genital lesions in males. However, the frequencies of major congenital anomalies were not greater than expected. We report three cases of limb reduction defects (LRD) in the first generation of children whose mothers were treated with DES during pregnancy, and two children (one male, one female) with deafness in the second generation after intrauterine exposure to DES. The LRD were not associated with other congenital anomalies. The malformed children with LRD were born between 1965 and 1973. The deafness was also isolated. The two mothers who have no hearing problems and who are healthy were exposed in utero to DES in 1963 and 1965, respectively. Their children were born in 1989 and 1994, respectively. In conclusion, the association of LRD and hearing loss with intrauterine exposure to DES could be coincidental. However, some hypothesis may explain these associations. Congenital hearing loss in the second generation may suggest a transgenerational effect.  相似文献

Transmyocardial laser revascularisation (TMLR) is used to treat patients with severe coronary artery disease. A laser is used to create narrow tunnels within ischemic heart muscle in an attempt to reperfuse the area with oxygenated blood directly from the left-ventricular chamber. It has been hypothesised that initially blood flow through the patent tunnels plays an important role in the efficacy of the treatment (J. Am. College Cordiol. 25(1) (1995) 258) and Waters (J. Fluid Mech. 433 (2001) 193) developed a simple mathematical model to show that this blood flow enhances the quantity of oxygenated blood drawn into the tunnel and the subsequent delivery of oxygen to the tissue.To date, however, the optimum parameter values for this clinical technique have not been determined, e.g. the radius of the laser-drilled tunnels and their relative spacing. We present a mathematical model to determine the distribution of oxygen for a wide range of the governing parameters. Our results indicate that the tunnel radius has a significant effect on the degree of tissue reperfusion and predictions for the optimum tunnel spacing are made.  相似文献

Incorporating the intrinsic variability of heart contractility varying with heart rate into the mathematical model of human heart would be useful for addressing the dynamical behaviors of human cardiovascular system, but models with such features were rarely reported. This study focused on the development and evaluation of a mathematical model of the whole heart, including the effects of heart contractility varying with heart rate changes. This model was developed based on a paradigm and model presented by Ottesen and Densielsen, which was used to model ventricular contraction. A piece-wise function together with expressions for time-related parameters were constructed for modeling atrial contraction. Atrial and ventricular parts of the whole heart model were evaluated by comparing with models from literature, and then the whole heart model were assessed through coupling with a simple model of the systemic circulation system and the pulmonary circulation system. The results indicated that both atrial and ventricular parts of the whole heart model could reasonably reflect their contractility varying with heart rate changes, and the whole heart model could exhibit major features of human heart. Results of the parameters variation studies revealed the correlations between the parameters in the whole heart model and performances (including the maximum pressure and the stroke volume) of every chamber. These results would be useful for helping users to adjust parameters in special applications.  相似文献

This study deals with neurophysiologically based models simulating electrical brain activity (i.e., the electroencephalogram or EEG, and evoked potentials or EPs). A previously developed lumped-parameter model of a single cortical column was implemented using a more accurate computational procedure. Anatomically acceptable values for the various model parameters were determined, and a multi-dimensional exploration of the model parameter-space was conducted. It was found that the model could produce a large variety of EEG-like waveforms and rhythms. Coupling two models, with delays in the interconnections to simulate the synaptic connections within and between cortical areas, made it possible to replicate the spatial distribution of alpha and beta activity. EPs were simulated by presenting pulses to the input of the coupled models. In general, the responses were more realistic than those produced using a single model. Our simulations also suggest that the scalp-recorded EP is at least partially due to a phase reordering of the ongoing activity.  相似文献

Using a two-contour mathematical model, changes in the degree of heart rate variability induced by an increased extracardial impulsation in the sinoatrial node have been studied. The model is based on quantitative characteristics of impulse conduction in the cardiac conduction system. A mathematical and computer modeling revealed the following three regimes of heart rate variability: linear dynamics, the 1st-degree chaos, and the 2nd-degree chaos. Transitions between these regimes have been studied. A comparative analysis of the one- and two-contour models of heart rate regulation has been performed.  相似文献
