The reason for variation in postweaning reproductive performance among multiparous sows is to a large extent unknown. In the present study, the influence of nursing behavior was explored. Blood samples were collected during lactation and after weaning from 18 multiparous sows for cortisol, LH, estradiol-17beta (E2), and progesterone analysis. Sow and piglet behavior was videotaped. The sows were fed according to litter size and slaughtered after the second postweaning estrus. The sows were divided into two groups based on average values for the different behavioral parameters. Sows with a long average nursing duration (long group) had lower average and basal LH levels on Day 14 and 21 of lactation as compared to the sows having a short average nursing duration (short group). In the long group, concentrations of E2 were lower the day after weaning, but on Day 15 and 21 of lactation no differences were noted between the two groups. Postweaning performance seemed impaired in the long group, though, differences were not significant. The sows in the long group were heavier and tended to lose less weight during lactation. To conclude, nursing duration seems to influence the extent to which reproductive functions are inhibited during lactation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the restriction of dietary protein during lactation has different impacts on sow metabolic status and milk production according to body weight was evaluated. From 5-months of age until farrowing, the gilts were fed to achieve body weights of 180 or 240 kg at farrowing. At this time, 38 sows were assigned to one of three groups: " 180 kg" sows not restricted in dietary protein during lactation (180CP); "180 kg" restricted in protein (180LP), or "240 kg" sows restricted in protein (240LP). Catheters were fitted in the jugular vein of 24 sows and serial blood samples were collected 1 d before and 1 d after weaning. Amongst the protein-restricted animals, heavy sows (240LP) had a smaller appetite than light sows in early lactation, resulting in lower energy and protein intakes in the 240LP than in the 180LP sows. Body protein losses were 8, 11 and 13.5% of calculated body protein mass at farrowing in the 180CP, 180LP and 240LP sows, respectively. At the end of lactation, IGF-I concentrations were lower in the 180LP than in the sows from the other groups, probably because of the uncoupling between GH and IGF-I secretions. Low IGF-I concentrations likely promote lean tissue mobilization. Glucose and insulin profiles suggested an insulin resistance state in the 240LP sows compared with the 180LP sows, which may explain, at least in part, the lower feed intake and body reserve mobilization in these sows. Plasma pre- and post-prandial concentrations of amino acids in late lactation differed among the three treatment groups. Throughout lactation, litters from the 180LP and 240LP sows had a slower growth rate than litters from sows which were not restricted, suggesting that endogenous protein mobilization throughout lactation does not completely compensate for a low protein intake.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine relationships between sow backfat depth, plasma leptin concentrations, and reproductive performance after weaning. On the day of farrowing (day 0), and at weaning (day 21), single blood samples were obtained from 120 mixed-parity sows and their backfat depth (P2) measured. Based on backfat depth at day 0, sows were classified as FAT (>24 mm, n = 16), MEDIUM (16-24 mm, n = 54), or THIN (<16 mm, n = 14). Sows were further classified on the basis of P2 backfat changes during lactation of <2 mm, 2-4 mm, or >4 mm. Reproductive performance was measured as weaning-to-oestrous intervals (WOI) of <6 d, 6-9 days, or > or =10 d, and pregnancy rates. There was a positive relationship (P < 0.0001) between backfat depth at day 0 and backfat loss during lactation. The WOI was not associated with backfat depth at day 0 or 21 (P > 0.1 for both). Pregnancy rate was not associated with backfat depth at day 0 (P > 0.1) but pregnant sows had a greater backfat depth at weaning (16.5 +/- 0.3 and 14.9 +/- 0.6 mm, P < 0.04). Backfat loss during lactation was positively associated with WOI (P < 0.01) and negatively associated with pregnancy rate (P < 0.04). Plasma leptin concentrations were higher (P < 0.001) in FAT sows than in MEDIUM or THIN sows on both days but there was no relationship between plasma leptin concentrations and reproductive performances after weaning. It is concluded that plasma leptin is associated with backfat depth and that loss of backfat depth during lactation is associated with reproductive performance. However, there is no direct association between plasma leptin and reproductive performance.  相似文献

Selection for prolificacy in sows has resulted in higher metabolic demands during lactation. In addition, modern sows have an increased genetic merit for leanness. Consequently, sow metabolism during lactation has changed, possibly affecting milk production and litter weight gain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lactational feed intake on milk production and relations between mobilization of body tissues (adipose tissue or skeletal muscle) and milk production in modern sows with a different lactational feed intake. A total of 36 primiparous sows were used, which were either full-fed (6.5 kg/day) or restricted-fed (3.25 kg/day) during the last 2 weeks of a 24-day lactation. Restricted-fed sows had a lower milk fat percentage at weaning and a lower litter weight gain and estimated milk fat and protein production in the last week of lactation. Next, several relations between sow body condition (loss) and milk production variables were identified. Sow BW, loin muscle depth and backfat depth at parturition were positively related to milk fat production in the last week of lactation. In addition, milk fat production was related to the backfat depth loss while milk protein production was related to the loin muscle depth loss during lactation. Backfat depth and loin muscle depth at parturition were positively related to lactational backfat depth loss or muscle depth loss, respectively. Together, results suggest that sows which have more available resources during lactation, either from a higher amount of body tissues at parturition or from an increased feed intake during lactation, direct more energy toward milk production to support a higher litter weight gain. In addition, results show that the type of milk nutrients that sows produce (i.e. milk fat or milk protein) is highly related to the type of body tissues that are mobilized during lactation. Interestingly, relations between sow body condition and milk production were all independent of feed level during lactation. Sow management strategies to increase milk production and litter growth in modern sows may focus on improving sow body condition at the start of lactation or increasing feed intake during lactation.  相似文献

The concentration of lactose in the mammary secretion from individual glands of two sows increased significantly (P less than 0.01) between 0 and 24 h after parturition. In six sows studied during the perinatal period there was a negative correlation (r = -0.80; P less than 0.02) at parturition between the concentration of progesterone in the blood and the concentration of lactose in the mammary secretion. Furthermore, the increase in concentration of lactose in the mammary secretion after parturition was related to the timing of the decline of plasma progesterone to low levels. The results indicate that the initiation of lactation occurs within 24 h of parturition in most sows, and the results are consistent with the hypothesis that progesterone withdrawal acts as the 'trigger'. Neither the changes in corticosteroid binding globulin nor the changes in total corticosteroids were temporally related to the initiation of lactation. However, a circadian rhythm was observed for total corticosteroids in the blood of three out of nine lactating and pregnant sows, whereas no circadian rhythm was observed in progesterone of the four pregnant sows. The results are discussed in relation to the disease complex mastitis-metritis-agalactia.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the restriction of dietary protein during lactation has different impacts on reproductive performance in light and heavy sows at farrowing was investigated, as well as the relationships between reproductive parameters and sow metabolic data. At farrowing, 38 primiparous sows were assigned to one of three groups: sows weighing 180 kg not restricted in dietary protein during lactation (180CP); sows weighing 180 or 240 kg restricted in protein (180LP and 240LP). Twenty-four sows were catheterized and serial blood samples were collected 1 d before and 1 d after weaning. The sows were inseminated at the first estrus after weaning and slaughtered at d 30 of gestation. Protein restriction reduced the proportion of sows that returned to estrus within 8 d after weaning in the 180LP sows (P < 0.03), but not in the 240LP sows. It also induced a reduction in ovulation rate in the 180LP sows (P < 0.05) and, to a lesser extent, in the 240LP sows (P = 0.12). When the sows were categorized according to return to estrus (WOI < or = 8 or > 8 d), basal and mean concentrations of LH increased after weaning only in sows with a short WOI. Sows with a delayed estrus exhibited a higher ratio of plasma tyrosine to large neutral amino acids (AA, P < 0.01). In conclusion, large body reserves at farrowing buffer, at least in part, the detrimental effect of a strongly negative nitrogen balance on reproduction. We suggest that the alteration of AA profiles induced by dietary protein restriction and body protein loss alters LH secretion via modifications of the neurotransmitters involved in GnRH secretion.  相似文献

This study aims to determine if Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG), used for oestrous synchronization in multiparous lactating does, could be replaced by one of the following lighting schedules without impairing reproductive performance: (a) 12-h L (light)/12-h D (dark) or (b) 8-h L/16-h D, until day 6 before artificial insemination (AI), when in both cases photoperiod was changed to 16-h L/8-h D and maintained until the day of AI, and in the following 4 days post Al the light hours were progressively reduced to the initial schedules. Two groups of 20 does each were respectively submitted to one of the lighting schedules specified above. All does were artificially inseminated in 6 consecutive cycles at 42 days intervals. In the first, third and fifth AIs, PMSG (20 IU/doe via sc 48 h before AI) was used in the two groups of does, whereas in the second, fourth and sixth Als no hormonal treatment was used. Degree of oestrous synchronization (also referred in text as sexual receptivity) was estimated by the colour of the vulva at AI. Reproductive performance of does was evaluated based on fertility (kindling rates), prolificity, mortality at birth, mortality at 21 days post birth, weight of the litter at 21 days post birth and number of weaned rabbits. Oestrous was better synchronized when PMSG was used with any of the two lighting programs. Without using PMSG, a photoperiod of 12-h L/12-h D until 6 days before AI resulted in a better sexual receptivity of does than 8-h L/16-h D. Fertility, prolificity, mortality of young rabbits at 21 days, the weight of the litters at 21 days and the number of weaned rabbits did not vary with the lighting program and were not affected by the PMSG treatment. Mortality at birth, however, was higher (+1 dead kit per litter) in litters housed under a light program of 12-h L/12-h D. Global productivity (number of weaned rabbits per 100 inseminated does) was better when using PMSG, for both lighting schedules. When using a photoperiod of 12-h L/12-h D until 6 days before AI, and omitting the PMSG treatment, global productivity was scarcely reduced, however, it was considerably impaired when using a photoperiod of 8-h L/16-h D until 6 days before AI and no PMSG treatment.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of pre partum (PRE) and post partum (POST) dietary energy and nutrient supply (E) and their interactions on feed intake, performance and energy status in dairy cows of three breeds. In this experiment, the effects of three energy and nutrient supply levels (low (L), medium (M), high (H)), both pre-calving and post-calving, were investigated, using a 3×3 factorial arrangement of treatments. In both phases (84 days pre- and 105 days post-calving) E levels applied to a total of 81 multiparous cows of breeds Simmental (SI), Brown Swiss (BS) and Holstein–Friesian (HF; n=27 for each breed), were 75%, 100% and 125% of recommendations of the German Society of Nutrition Physiology (GfE). Dry matter intake (DMI) was restricted, if energy intake exceeded target values. Pre partum DMI and energy intake were different as designed, liveweight and body condition score (BCS) of SI cows were higher, but EB was lower, compared to BS and HF cows. Milk yield and composition were influenced by all three main experimental factors (EPRE, EPOST, breed). Energy-corrected milk yield was 25.6, 28.6 and 30.1 kg/day for LPRE, MPRE and HPRE as well as 21.5, 30.1 and 32.6 kg/day for LPOST, MPOST and HPOST, respectively. Numerically, only for milk protein content the interactions EPRE×EPOST and EPRE×breed reached significance. Impact of energy supply pre-calving was more pronounced when cows had lower energy supply post-calving and vice versa. On the other hand, milk yield response of cows to energy supply above requirements was greater for cows that were fed on a low energy level pre partum. Impact of energy level pre partum was higher for HF cows, showing that their milk production relies to a greater extent on mobilization of body reserves. Increasing energy supply pre partum led to a more negative energy balance post partum, mainly by increasing milk yield and content, whereas feed intake was slightly reduced. Increasing energy supply post partum enhanced milk yield as well as milk protein and lactose content. Calculated energy balance corresponded well with liveweight and BCS change. Response of milk yield to increasing energy supply followed the principle of diminishing returns, since energy was increasingly partitioned to body retention. Increasing energy supply pre partum enhances milk yield and content post partum, but exacerbates negative energy balance and its consequences.  相似文献

Background

Research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) has revealed that depression is associated with inflammation manifested by increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines.

Discussion

The old paradigm described inflammation as simply one of many risk factors for depression. The new paradigm is based on more recent research that has indicated that physical and psychological stressors increase inflammation. These recent studies constitute an important shift in the depression paradigm: inflammation is not simply a risk factor; it is the risk factor that underlies all the others. Moreover, inflammation explains why psychosocial, behavioral and physical risk factors increase the risk of depression. This is true for depression in general and for postpartum depression in particular. Puerperal women are especially vulnerable to these effects because their levels of proinflammatory cytokines significantly increase during the last trimester of pregnancy – a time when they are also at high risk for depression. Moreover, common experiences of new motherhood, such as sleep disturbance, postpartum pain, and past or current psychological trauma, act as stressors that cause proinflammatory cytokine levels to rise. Breastfeeding has a protective effect on maternal mental health because it attenuates stress and modulates the inflammatory response. However, breastfeeding difficulties, such as nipple pain, can increase the risk of depression and must be addressed promptly.

Conclusion

PNI research suggests two goals for the prevention and treatment of postpartum depression: reducing maternal stress and reducing inflammation. Breastfeeding and exercise reduce maternal stress and are protective of maternal mood. In addition, most current treatments for depression are anti-inflammatory. These include long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, cognitive therapy, St. John's wort, and conventional antidepressants.  相似文献

Recent research on the endocrine control of the initiation of lactation, on the hypothalamic control of prolactin secretion, and on the utilization of nutrients by the mammary gland for the synthesis of milk is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the mechanism of action of prolactin, and the role played by prolactin receptors.  相似文献

As a result of the genetic selection for prolificacy and the improvements in the environment and farms management, litter size has increased in the last few years so that energy requirements of the lactating sow are greater. In addition, selection for feed efficiency of growing pigs is also conducted in maternal lines, and this has led to a decrease in appetite and feed intake that is extended to the lactation period, so the females are not able to obtain the necessary energy and nutrients for milk production and they mobilize their energetic reserves. When this mobilization is excessive, reproductive and health problems occur which ends up in an early sow culling. In this context, it has been suggested to improve feed efficiency at lactation through genetic selection. The aim of this study is to know, in a Duroc population, the genetic determinism of sow feed efficiency during lactation and traits involved in its definition, as well as genetic and environmental associations between them. The studied traits are daily lactation feed intake (dLFI), daily sow weight balance (dSWB), backfat thickness balance (BFTB), daily litter weight gain (dLWG), sow residual feed intake (RFI) and sow restricted residual feed intake (RRFI) during lactation. Data corresponded to 851 parities from 581 Duroc sows. A Bayesian analysis was performed using Gibbs sampling. A four-trait repeatability animal model was implemented including the systematic factors of batch and parity order, the standardized covariates of sow weight (SWf) and litter weight (LWs) at farrowing for all traits and lactation length for BFTB. The posterior mean (posterior SD) of heritabilities were: 0.09 (0.03) for dLFI, 0.37 (0.07) for dSWB, 0.09 (0.03) for BFTB, 0.22 (0.05) for dLWG, 0.04 (0.02) for RFI and null for RRFI. The genetic correlation between dLFI and dSWB was high and positive (0.74 (0.11)) and null between dLFI and BFTB. Genetic correlation was favourable between RFI and dLFI and BFTB (0.71 (0.16) and −0.69 (0.18)), respectively. The other genetic correlations were not statistically different from zero. The phenotypic correlations were low and positive between dLFI and dSWB (0.27 (0.03), dSWB and BFTB (0.25 (0.04)), and between dLFI and dLWG (0.16 (0.03)). Therefore, in the population under study, the improvement of the lactation feed efficiency would be possible either using RFI, which would not have unfavourable correlated effects, or through an index including its component traits.  相似文献

Modern genotype primiparous and multiparous sows (Yorkshire x Landrace, n=48) were used to evaluate effects of dietary lysine intake during late gestation and lactation, and their interaction on reproductive performance. Sows were randomly allotted to two gestation lysine (G, 0.6% or 0.8% lysine) treatments based on parity in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, and each treatment had 12 replicates comprising 1 sow. Then all the sows were assigned to two lactation lysine (L, 1.0% or 1.3% lysine) treatments within parity and gestation treatments in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design, and each treatment comprised six replicates with 1 sow/replicate during lactation. Feeding higher lysine level during gestation increased sow body weight and backfat thickness (P=0.001) and body condition was better (P=0.001) in multiparous than that of primiparous sows. Both of the lysine levels during lactation and parity influenced sow body condition and reproductive performance (P<0.05). Higher lysine intake during lactation increased the concentrations of total solids (P=0.024), protein (P=0.001) and solids not-fat (P=0.042) in colostrum and total solids (P=0.001), protein (P=0.001), fat (P=0.001) and solids not-fat (P=0.005) in milk. Protein concentration of milk was greater (P=0.001) in multiparous sows than that of primiparous sows. Feeding of high lysine diets resulted in an increment of plasma urea N (P=0.010; P=0.047) and a decrease of creatinine (P=0.045; P=0.002) on the day of postfarrowing and weaning, respectively. Furthermore, as lysine intake increased, the secretions of insulin, FSH, and LH were increased (P<0.05) and multiparous sows showed higher (P<0.05) concentrations of FSH and LH pulses on the day of postfarrowing and weaning, respectively. These results indicated that higher lysine intake than that recommended by NRC [NRC, 1998. Nutrient Requirements of Swine, 10th ed. National Academy Press, 458 Washington, DC] could improve sow performance during late gestation and lactation. Furthermore primiparous sows need higher lysine intake than multiparous sows. Moreover, nutritional impacts on reproduction may be mediated in part through associated effects on circulating LH concentration.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of two types of housing on the duration of farrowing and the physiology of sows before and after farrowing. We assigned 20 sows (PEN) to farrowing pens (210 cm x 335 cm) enriched with straw bedding and 18 sows (CRATE) were placed in farrowing crates (80 cm x 210 cm) with no bedding material. We sampled the animals during period A (from day -5 before farrowing to day +1 of lactation) and during period B (from days +2 to +5 of lactation). We took daily venous blood samples for progesterone measurements and four salivary samples per day (at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00) for cortisol determination. In addition, intensive blood sampling was performed in 18 catheterised sows (9 PEN and 9 CRATE) to determine the level of oxytocin during farrowing. The treatment had no effect on litter size, piglet mortality at birth and weaning, growth of the piglets between days 1 and 5 of life. We found no significant difference in the cortisol concentration between the two groups during period A (p=0.36). Significant difference was found in period B, where the CRATE group had a higher concentration of cortisol than the PEN group (p=0.03). Progesterone concentration did not differ between the two groups (p=0.80). The duration of farrowing was on average 93 min longer in the CRATE sows (n=15), with a mean of 311+/-35 min (mean+/-S.D.), than in the PEN sows (n=19), with a mean of 218+/-24 min (p=0.03). In addition, the mean interval between each piglet expulsion was longer in the CRATE group (n=11), with a mean of 25+/-4 min, than in the PEN group (n=15) with a mean of 16+/-2 min (p=0.05). During farrowing, the post-expulsion oxytocin pulses average tended to be higher in the PEN group (77.6+/-47.6 ng/ml) than in the CRATE group (38.1+/-24.6 pg/ml) (p=0.08). The concentration of oxytocin strongly affected the duration of farrowing (p<0.001). In conclusion, this study showed that the environment influences the physiology of the sow during farrowing and early lactation.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different energy and lysine intake on reproductive performance of multiparous sows during late gestation and lactation. Thirty-six sows were allocated to six dietary treatments in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement and each treatment had six replicates. Three energy levels and two lysine levels were used during late gestation and lactation. The results demonstrated that higher lysine intake improved (p < 0.05) the body condition of sows during both periods and their reproductive performance during lactation. Both, dietary energy and lysine level had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the composition of colostrum and milk. In general, dietary treatments had no effect on blood metabolites and hormones. These results suggest that energy levels recommended by the National Research Council (1998) for sows are enough; however, higher lysine levels than those recommended could improve reproductive performance during late gestation and lactation in multiparous sows.  相似文献

To study the regulation of lipogenesis in adipose tissue by insulin and growth hormone during lactation, tissue was biopsied from primiparous bovines at 30 days antepartum and 60 days postpartum. Tissue was cultured for 24 hr or 48 hr in M199 with acetate and glucose, with a change of medium at 24 hr. The three in vitro treatments were: insulin and hydrocortisone at 10 and 50 ng/ml, respectively (IH); IH + 10 ng/ml of growth hormone (G10); and IH + 100 ng/ml of growth hormone (G100). IH allowed lipogenesis rates from 50% to 85% of those in fresh tissue. Addition of 10 ng/ml of growth hormone reduced (P less than 0.05) lipogenesis; at 100 ng/ml, the effect was only slightly greater. The hypothesis that insulin and growth hormone could be degraded by bovine adipose tissue was tested. Adipose tissue cell-free extracts degraded 125I-labeled insulin, but did not degrade labeled growth hormone. The insulin protease activity was further characterized and had a pH optimum of 7.1, a maximum hydrolysis of approximately 70%, and a hydrated molecular mass of approximately 23,000 daltons. Insulin proteolysis was inhibited by specific insulin protease inhibitors and stimulated by disulfide reducing agents. Bovine growth hormone, prolactin, and histone inhibited (P less than 0.05) the proteolysis of insulin, while bovine serum albumin, egg albumin, trypsin inhibitor, and lysozyme did not. Adipose tissue from pregnant and lactating bovines was sensitive to insulin and growth hormone, and growth hormone may modulate activity of an insulin-specific protease.  相似文献

Antioxidant status of ewe's blood during pregnancy and lactation was studied. It is revealed that the lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes is decreased, whereas in blood plasma is increased in the middle pregnancy, reaching the maximum shortly before peak of progesterone production. The activities of antioxidant enzymes are increased at the end of pregnancy, when the level of progesterone in blood is maximal. The positive correlation between plasma progesterone level and activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (p < 0.01), between plasma cortisol concentration and total antioxidant capacity of blood plasma (p < 0.05) are revealed. It is shown, that the activities of antioxidant enzymes reach a maximum in the critical periods of pregnancy, providing the protection of the maternal organism and the fetus against negative influence of free radicals. The positive correlation between a level of hormones and separate parameters of antioxidant system in blood allows to assume, that progesterone participates in the regulation of enzymatic part of the antioxidant system, while cortisol is implicated in the regulation of the non-enzymatic component of this system in ewes.  相似文献

Blood metabolite and hormone concentrations are indicative of metabolic status, but blood sampling and analysis is invasive and time-consuming. Monitoring behavior can be done automatically, and behaviors may also be used as indicators of metabolic status. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between metabolic status and feeding behavior, lying behavior, motion index and steps of dairy cows in week 4 postpartum. Behavioral data from 81 Holstein-Friesian cows were collected using computerized feeders and accelerometers, and blood samples were collected for analysis of free-fatty acid (FFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, insulin, IGF-1 and growth hormone (GH) concentrations. First, cluster analysis was performed to categorize cows as having poor, average, good or very good metabolic status based on their plasma FFA, BHB, glucose, insulin, IGF-1 and GH concentration. Subsequently, the performance and behavior of cows in clusters with poor, average and good metabolic status were compared using GLM. Cows with a poor or average metabolic status tended to have greater fat-and-protein-corrected milk yield than cows with good metabolic status. Furthermore, cows with a poor metabolic status had a lower energy balance and dry matter intake (DMI) than cows with an average or good metabolic status and had a lower number of meals than cows with good metabolic status. Daily number of visits to the feeder and lying time tended to be positively related with metabolic status. Feeding rate (kg/min), daily meal time (min/day), number of lying bouts per day, steps and motion index were not related with metabolic status. In conclusion, better metabolic status in dairy cows in early lactation was associated with a greater DMI, increased feeding activity and a tendency to more time spent lying, compared with poor metabolic status. These results suggest that compromised metabolic status is reflected in altered cow’s behavior in week 4 of lactation.  相似文献

Gonadal size and the circulating concentrations of two pituitary hormones (luteinizing hormone and prolactin) and three gonadal steroids (testosterone, progesterone and oestradiol-17β) were measured in two closely related Diomedea albatrosses at South Georgia. The Grey-headed albatross D. chrysostoma , if successful in rearing a chick, usually breeds biennially, whilst the Black-browed albatross D. melanophris normally breeds annually. Direct examination (by laparoscopy) of the gonads showed that the testes of both species underwent annual cycles, whilst endocrine data confirmed that those male Grey-headed albatrosses at the colony in the pre-laying period but not breeding in that year (having bred successfully the previous year) were apparently in full reproductive condition with elevated testosterone levels typical of breeding birds. However, the females of the two species differed markedly. Grey-headed albatrosses, in a year following successful breeding, had undeveloped ovaries with low levels of circulating oestradiol but high levels of progesterone, whereas the Black-browed albatrosses showed a pattern consistent with annual ovarian development. The profiles of gonadal steroids through the breeding season were similar for the males of both species but differences existed between the females. In the female Grey-headed albatrosses, transient peaks of progesterone were present throughout chick rearing but these were absent from Black-browed albatrosses. Prolactin had a similar profile in both species, with uniformly high levels throughout incubation and a rapid fall near the end of the brood-guard period. It is suggested that Grey-headed, like Black-browed, albatrosses are intrinsically annual breeders. However, if a female Grey-headed albatross breeds successfully in one year, then nutritional factors operate to ensure that in the following year the female does not show ovarian development, although the ovary is active in terms of progesterone secretion.  相似文献
