by its large habit, big flowering heads, and overall lack of trichomes. It occurs within the natural range for the genus and

Natural killer (NK) cell function is regulated by different types of membrane-bound receptors of which killer-cell immunoglobulin-like
receptors (KIRs) are the most complex and diverse. KIRs are encoded by 17 different genes located within the leukocyte receptor
complex (19q13.4). The frequency with which KIR gene features are present in different human populations differs. Here, we
present our results on the KIR gene diversity observed in a large group of mestizos from the central Mexican city of San Luis
Potosí. In total, 53 different KIR genotypes were observed, 47 with previously described gene profiles and six harboring novel
KIR gene combinations. Group A homozygous haplotypes were seen in 102 individuals (34%), while group B homozygous haplotypes
were present in 45 (15%). Heterozygous combinations of groups A and B haplotypes were seen in 153 individuals (51%). Haplotype
frequency estimations based on a true content of 600 chromosomes showed a relatively balanced proportion of group A (59.5%)
and group B (40.5%) haplotypes in our study population. A homozygous combination of the cA01|tA01 haplotype was present in
33% of the population with other frequent combinations being cA01|tA01, cB03|tB01 in 14.7% and cA01|tA01, cB02|tA01 in 12%.
The dendrogram derived from activating KIR gene phylogenetic analysis revealed five clearly distinct clades corresponding
to African, East Asian, Arab/Caucasoid, Mexican mestizo/Amerindian and South Asian populations. Our results illustrate the
genetic contribution that Caucasoid and Amerindian populations have made toward present-day Mexicans and suggest an important
Southeast Asian genetic contribution to native Amerindian populations. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop a health risk assessment in different areas of San Luis Potosí, México. Four heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead) were analyzed in soil from communities assessed. The mean arsenic concentration was significantly higher (p < .05) in the city of San Luis Potosí (51.85 mg/kg) compared to the other assessed areas (5.52–8.43 mg/kg). For cadmium, the mean concentration was significantly higher (p < .05) in Santa Maria Picula (7.46 mg/kg) than in the other areas (3.72–4.15 mg/kg). Regarding mercury levels, a significantly higher (p < .05) mean concentration was found in Mezquitic (1.54 mg/kg) compared to other areas (0.56–0.81 mg/kg). Lastly, when comparing the mean lead concentration in the city of San Luis Potosí (108 mg/kg), it was found to be significantly lower (p < .05) than in other areas (219–227 mg/kg). Subsequently, a probabilistic health risk assessment was performed, ingestion was the major exposure pathway for all four metals. Maximum cumulative hazard index (HI) values showed higher risk in all sampled locations (HIs > 1.0), suggesting that these sites can pose a non-carcinogenic risk to the populations (children) living in those areas. This study highlights the necessity of establishing a biomonitoring program for the surveillance of the child populations living in the assessed locations. 相似文献

In this paper, we present a bioclimatic approach to (1) differentiate populations of the endemic Mexican columnar cactus Neobuxbaumia tetetzo within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley and (2) evaluate, under two possible future scenarios (years 2050 and 2080), the effects of climate change on the total species distribution in this area, as well as on groups of populations defined by their bioclimatic models. Four population groups were identified, and principal component analysis showed that the variables that explained more than 40% of the climatic variation were precipitation of the wettest quarter and temperature seasonality. Bioclimatic models under the different scenarios indicated that when the overall species distribution was analyzed, this area will probably have contracted by 19.5% by the year 2050 and 47.05% by the year 2080, whereas the separate analysis of population groups projected area contractions of 18.4% by the year 2050 and 51.95% by the year 2080. These results demonstrate the importance of exploring new approaches for evaluating and predicting current and future distribution of plant species. 相似文献

Nereis garwoodi n. sp. is described on the basis of eight syntype specimens (six atokous and two heteronereis) collected in Bahía Chetumal, Mexican Caribbean coast, and the variability in the paragnath numbers in the pharynx is established using 180 specimens; paragnath numbers are I:10(SD = 1.9); II:30 (SD = 2.6); III:41 (SD = 5.2); IV:29 (SD = 3.5), V:1, VI:4, VII-VIII: > 30. 1. Protein-polysaccharides from pig laryngeal cartilage extracted by two procedures described in the preceding paper (Tsiganos & Muir, 1969) were shown to consist of macromolecules of various sizes as assessed by gel filtration in 4% and 6% agarose. 2. A larger proportion of the smaller molecules was present in the preparation obtained by brief extraction in iso-osmotic sodium acetate (procedure I) than in that obtained by more prolonged extraction in 10% (w/v) calcium chloride (procedure II). 3. Two fractions were separated by gel filtration in 6% agarose and by electrophoresis in compressed glass fibre. These fractions differed in chemical composition and in antigenic determinants. The gel-retarded fraction R and that of higher electrophoretic mobility possessed the same single antigen, whereas the gel-excluded fraction E and the slower electrophoretic fraction contained all the antigens of the starting material including that of fraction R. 4. Five N-terminal amino acid residues were identified in preparation I and fraction E, only two of which were present in fraction R. 5. The relative proportions of gel-excluded and gel-retarded fractions did not change when solutions of high ionic strength, urea or guanidine hydrochloride were used for elution. 6. The differences in chemical and amino acid composition between fractions R and E showed that the latter was not a simple aggregate of the former. Fraction E contained more basic and aromatic amino acids, and some methionine and cystine; the last two were absent from fraction R. Hydroxyproline was not detected in either fraction. 7. The number of glycosidic linkages in both fractions was estimated by alkaline beta-elimination. Appreciable amounts of threonine as well as serine were destroyed in both fractions. An average chain length for chondroitin sulphate was calculated from the galactosamine content of both fractions and the amounts of hydroxy amino acid destroyed. Average chain lengths were also calculated from the xylose and galactosamine content of each fraction. Each independent method gave a value of approximately 28 disaccharide units for the chain length in both fractions and hence their difference in size could not be explained by differences in the length of carbohydrate chains. 8. All fractions contained glucosamine, which was attributed to keratan sulphate. Content of both protein and keratan sulphate increased with the size of the macromolecules. 9. It is suggested, from these results, that chondroitin sulphate-protein complexes normally exist as a heterogeneous population of macromolecules in cartilage, and that keratan sulphate is involved in the formation of larger molecules. 相似文献

Syrrhopodon cuneifolius Thér. is lectotypified and confirmed as a good species, endemic to Madagascar. The features distinguishing it from the superficially similar Syrrhopodon leprieurii Mont., and morphological variation in the latter are discussed. In contrast to the leaves in S. leprieurii, those in S. cuneifolius generally lack large spines, possess a costa with a ventral cortex of small pluripapillose cells, and have a marginal stereome that fails short of the leaf apex. Consideration is given to removing Syrrhopodon recurvulus Mitt. from synonymy with S. leprieurii and placing it in synonymy with Syrrhopodon gaudichaudii Mont. 相似文献

Macroalgal studies in Baja California Sur have dealt mainly with occurrence and seasonality, but some areas are poorly known even for these basic data. Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera is an important high-productivity fisheries area where coastal infrastructure development is under way. A spatial characterization of the marine flora from Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera was done by intensive sampling at different depths and localities with skin and SCUBA diving. At least 500 m2 were surveyed in each site. Additionally. quantitative sampling was done in ten random 25 cm2 quadrates per site. In the intertidal section, density and cover estimates were used. We also investigated the historical records and geographical affinities. A total of 72 species were identified (most were red algae: 62%). We found no general trend in the biogeographical affinities, which varied with each taxonomic group. Most brown algae species were tropical-endemic; red algae temperate-cosmopolite and green algae tropical-cosmopolite. In the spatial assemblage structure we found a high similarity between the intertidal areas, but a low similarity in shallow or deeper areas (3-5 m). This pattern was the same when we compared the abundance of the main species. We suggest that there are significant spatial differences in recruitment and development of the assemblages in relation to vertical distribution (depth) and position along the shore. There is a clear-cut Gelidium-Jania belt in the intertidal zone and a Padina-Dictyota belt below the low tide. Sporadic and year-round species occur in the intertidal zone, annual and perennial species below the low tide line. Sites differ in recruitment and this affects the abundance of other species (such as coraline and Caulerpa species). Temperature and sedimentation affect seasonality, but community structure is relatively constant throughout the year. 相似文献

An annotated checklist of marine fishes of the Sanctuary of Islands and Islets of Bahía Chamela in the central Mexican Pacific is presented. Records of fish species were obtained by different methods including visual census, sampling with anesthetics, fisherman-nets, and trawling with a biological dredge. Additional records were obtained from natural history collections and publications. The list comprises 196 species in 64 families and 141 genera. The Carangidae is the most speciose family with 11 species, followed by the Labridae with 10 and the Pomacentridae with nine. Fourteen species are endemic in Mexican Pacific waters, but none is restricted to Bahía Chamela. The most dominant species recorded during underwater surveys were Epinephelus
labriformis, Stegastes
flavilatus, and Halichoeres
dispilus. Most species are of tropical affinities distributed throughout the tropical eastern Pacific (123), eastern Pacific (23), and Mexican Pacific (14). Other species are known from the eastern and Indo-Pacific regions (18), eastern Pacific and western Atlantic oceans (2), and some are circumtropical (9). A new record of the Gulf Brotula Ogilbia

Mimosa is an important genus of legumes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems of the world, but scarce information is available about its interaction with microbial symbionts. In Mexico, there are no reports on the responsive of endemic Mimosa species to arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal colonization. In this study, the AM association with seedlings of six endemic Mimosa species, M. adenantheroides, M. calcicola, M. lacerata, M. luisana, M. polyantha and M. texana var. filipes, is reported. Field conditions were simulated in the greenhouse. Seeds were collected from plants and soil from the localities where the species occur within the semi-arid Tehuacán–Cuicatlán Valley, Mexico. Four treatments were applied: (1) control, (2) benomyl, (3) phosphorus, and (4) benomyl plus phosphorus. Mycorrhizal seedlings of five species, M. adenantheroides, M. lacerata, M. luisana, M. polyantha and M. texana var. filipes, showed a higher shoot and total dry weight than non-mycorrhizal seedlings. The only species that did not show any difference between mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal seedling performance was M. calcicola. M. luisana, M. polyantha and M. texana var. filipes had a higher root/shoot ratio; in general, benomyl treatments promoted seedling biomass allocation to the root, while control, phosphorus and benomyl plus phosphorus treatments decrease root/shoot ratio. Shoot P content was significantly higher in mycorrhizal than in non-mycorrhizal plants, although no significant differences were found for M. adenantheroides in all treatments. Benomyl and benomyl plus phosphorus treatments reduced AM colonization in all the species under study. Benomyl significantly reduced the number of N2-fixing root nodules, while the phosphorus treatment generally stimulated nodulation. The species M. lacerata, M. luisana, M. polyantha and M. texana var. filipes had a high mycorrhizal dependency index indicating that plant growth was strongly increased by arbuscular mycorrhiza activity. Our results indicate that the response of all Mimosa species to mycorrhization was highly variable. To our knowledge, this is the first report about the effect of AM fungi and phosphorus on Mimosa species, which may be useful in biodiversity and soil conservation programs. 相似文献

“Isosclerotan”, a polysaccharide constituent extracted with a sodium hydroxide solution from sclerotia of Sclerotinia libertiana, could be purified by the successive precipitation with the followings; a mixture of copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide, ammonium sulfate, and ethyl alcohol. The preparation proved homogeneous by ultracentrifugal analysis. From sedimentation and viscosity measurements, the molecular weight of isosclerotan was calculated as 6.13 × 106, andas 1.60 × 105 after treatment with a dilute oxalic acid solution. Isosclerotan was scarecely soluble in cold water but soluble in hot water, yielding a highly viscous solution. It exhibited a low positive optical rotation, + 23.0° (in water), and infrared spectrum had a sharp absorption at 890~898 cm?1, which indicated the prevalence of the β-glycosidic linkage in isosclerotan. Through degradation by acids and enzymes of isosclerotan, there were obtained various oligosaccharides containing β-1.3, β-1.4, and β-1.6 linkages. From results obtained by periodate oxidation and methylation, it is assumed that the polysaccharide involves the 1.3, 1.4, and 1.6 linkages in 47.7%, 16.6% and 35.7%, respectively, and a branching structure about 12.5%. 相似文献

Chlorodiphenylnitrichloroethane (DDT) and chlordane (CLO) are currently used in Mexico to control malaria and termites. From 1990 to 1996 a total of 27 ton of DDT and 508 of CLO were imported. We establish a methodology to determine their environmental impact in a Mexican dam (Ignacio Ramírez). The toxic effect of DDT and CLO were evaluated on the o-demethylase (OD) and acethycholinesterase activities (AchA) of the cladoceran Daphnia magna exposed to different concentrations of the insecticides solved in water from three sites. Their effect on the AchA and OD activities, and so the CL50 were used as exposure bioindicators to determine the more polluted sites. The physicochemical characteristics of water and the biodiversity of the dam test sites were considered. The station near the floodgate has toxicity potential because enzymatic activities were modified. We suggest the use of AchA and OD activities measure in the cladoceran to evaluate the toxicity of a water body polluted by organochlorate insecticides. 相似文献
