Water deprivation (WD) decreased the serotonin (5-HT) level and significantly increased the 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the rat midbrain and hypothalamus, the catabolic 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio increasing three-fold. Hydration (H) produced a moderate increase in the 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels in the hypothalamus with no changes in the 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio. Hydration exerted no significant effect upon the 5-HT level and metabolism in the midbrain. A two-fold increase of corticosterone concentration in water deprivation and its decrease in hydration were shown to occur in peripheral blood plasma. 相似文献

Plants grown in natural environment are regularly subjected to different combinations of abiotic stresses. Recent studies revealed that citrus plants subjected to a combination of severe drought and high temperatures displayed specific physiological, hormonal, molecular and metabolic responses. In the present study, we have performed a long‐term experiment combining moderate drought and heat in Cleopatra mandarin to evaluate the impact of the stress‐sequence, intensity and duration. Our results support previous observation of high sensitivity of Cleopatra mandarin to abiotic stresses that include high temperatures. In this sense, a combination of drought and heat stress negatively impacts Cleopatra seedlings independently of the drought intensity. However, some responses to combined drought and heat depend on drought intensity, especially those involved in stomatal regulation. The intricate natural environment, abiotic stress combinations and global climatic changes increase the complexity of studying plant responses to stress factors in the laboratory. Consequently, new experimental approaches taking in consideration different stress combinations should be implemented to study the viability of Cleopatra mandarin as a rootstock in a rapidly changing environment. 相似文献

Fungal growth often appears in a surrounding where water and nutrients are scarce. The impact of this environment during sporogenesis on subsequent growth is often neglected.This study investigates the effect of water availability during sporogenesis on subsequent early growth. Therefore, a carbon-depleted substrate was constructed. Humidity is then the only parameter of interest. The water conditions during sporogenesis, and during subsequent growth, were varied. This is a stressing environment: no carbon source is present, and water provided solely via the vapour.The lag time, , and initial growth rate, , of the germ tubes were monitored.The effect of history on germination and initial growth depends on the of the environment. Only at low do spores produced at low have a smaller and higher compared to those grown at high . This result was remarkably pronounced when the substrate was also made hydrophobic: growth only occurred when spores were developed at low and placed in high .Spores grown on lowered attract more water. It is hypothesized that this attraction affects subsequent growth behaviour, and is the reason why growth on hydrophobic glass only prevails in the condition of high and lowered history.We demonstrate the influence of cultivation conditions on germination, which becomes more pronounced in a more desiccated environment. 相似文献

Freeze/thaw-induced embolism was studied in leaves of field-grown snow gum (Eucalyptus pauciflora) subject to frequent morning frosts. Juvenile trees were grown in buried pots, brought to the laboratory at different stages of acclimation and subjected to simulated frost-freezes (at 2 degrees C h(-1)) to nadir temperatures of -3 or -6 degrees C, which snow gums commonly experience. Frost-frozen and subsequently thawed leaves were cryo-fixed to preserve the distribution of water and were then examined by cryo-scanning electron microscopy. No embolisms were found in leaves frozen to -3 degrees C and thawed. In contrast, 34% of vessels were embolized in thawed leaves that had been frozen to -6 degrees C. This difference was seen also in the extent of extracellular ice blocks in the mid-vein expansion zones in leaves frozen to -3 and -6 degrees C, which occupied 3 and 14% of the mid-vein area, respectively. While the proportion of embolism depended on nadir temperature, it was independent of season (and hence of acclimation state). From the observation that increased embolism at lower nadir temperature was related to the freeze-induced redistribution of water, we hypothesize that the dehydration of cell walls and cells caused by the redistribution exerts sufficient tension on xylem water to induce cavitation on thawing. 相似文献

This study examined whether, for Norway rats suffering a body weight deficit of sufficient magnitude, food hoarding is prepotent
over feeding. Rats food-deprived to 85% ad lib weight were videotaped during hoarding sessions that lasted until they ceased
to hoard or eat to obtain complete records of retrieval and feeding. During the early minutes of a trial, feeding was the
predominant activity, and food pellet retrieval occurred singly or in short bouts. This gave way over time to diminished eating
and extended bouts of retrieval (hoarding). Closer analysis suggested that retrieval and feeding were aroused together and
at the beginning of such arousal retrieval was momentarily prepotent over feeding. But once retrieval had occurred, there
was a shift in favor of feeding. After the rat had consumed a sufficient amount of food, feeding was no longer aroused to
the same degree, so bouts of retrieval occurred without feeding.

We tested the hypothesis that the release of PYY by fat confined to the proximal small intestine is dependent on CCK. Using a multi-fistulated model, plasma PYY levels were compared in 6 dogs after 60 mM oleate was perfused into the proximal one-half of the small intestine following i.v. administration of saline or devazepide, a CCK-A antagonist. Plasma PYY increased with fat (P < 0. 05), but plasma PYY level was lower following devazepide at 60 min and 90 min (P < 0.05). We conclude that CCK serves as a foregut signal linking fat in the proximal gut with the release of distal gut PYY. 相似文献

In cattle the water content of the skin was determined (1) in the normal animals; (2) after a 3-day period of water deprivation (dehydration); (3) one hour after the water deprived animals had resumed drinking (rehydration)and (4) one hour after the beginning of infusion of water into the rumen of normal animals (overhydration). Dehydration reduced the water content of the skin from 70.6 to 65.8% on average. Rehydration led to a partial restoration of the water content of the skin. Overhydration did not have a measurable effect on the water content of the skin. A rough estimation of the total amount of water lost during dehydration from the total skin of each animal indicated that on average the calves lost 315 ml,the oxen 1,336 ml of water from their skins.
Zusammenfassung Beim Rind wurde der Wassergehalt der Haut bestimmt (1)in normalem Zustand der Tiere; (2) nach einer dreitägigen Wasserenthaltung der Tiere (Dehydration); (3) eine Stunde nachdem die dehydrierten Tiere wieder zu trinken begannen(Rehydration) und (4) eine Stunde nach begonnener Infusion von Wasser in den Pansen von normalen Tieren (Überhydration). Dehydration verursachte einen mittleren Abfall des Wassergehaltes der Haut von 70.6 auf 65.8%. Rehydration führte zu einer teilweisen Wiederherstellung des normalen Wassergehaltes der Haut, während Überhydration ohne messbaren Einfluss blieb. Der berechnete Wasserverlust von der gesamten Haut als Folge der Dehydration war 315 ml bei den Kälbern und 1.336 ml bei den Ochsen.
Resume On a déterminé la teneur en eau de la peau des bovidés sous quatre conditions: (1) chez des bêtes à l'état normal; (2) par déshydratation (après 3 jours sans abreuvage); (3) une heure après que les bêtes déshydratées aient reçu à boire (réhydratation); (4) une heure après le début d'une infusion d'eau dans la panse de bêtes à l'état normal (surhydratation). L'état de déshydratation a provoqué une baisse moyenne du taux de l'eau cutanée de 70,6% à 65,8%. La réhydratation a eu pour conséquence la reconstitution partielle de la teneur en eau de la peau alors que la surhydratation ne semble pas avoir eu d'effets. The gradient NMR method was applied to study intercellular water flows in root segments of maize (Zea mays L.) under disturbance of root hydrodynamic system by the increase in external pressure up to 4 MPa. The rate of intercellular water flows along the root symplast was found to depend on the magnitude and dynamics of pressure changes. Based on the previously predicted cupola-shaped dependency of water flow on the aperture of plasmodesmal neck constrictions, we assume that the external pressure stimulates (via cytosolic calcium) the activity of contractile structures localized in the neck regions of plasmodesmata. Cells of Chlorella vulgaris were taken for comparison since their water relations and cell structure differ strongly from the root cells of maize. The results show that the diffusional water flow in Chlorella is independent of external pressure both in intact cells and in algae, whose plasma membrane was artificially permeabilized. 相似文献

An automated device was used to examine, in detail, feeding on disks of wheat germ medium by fifth-instar Manduca sextacaterpillars. Comparisons were made between some animals which had ad libitum access to food at all times and others which were deprived of food for 1–5 h before being tested. Feeding patterns of both groups indicated regulation of feeding both between and within meals. Deprived animals ate more during their first meal than did nondeprived animals chiefly by increasing (a) the number of chewing bouts (and thus the meal duration) and (b) the bite frequency. Calculations indicated that the deficit caused by deprivation was made up during the first meal. However, deprived animals continued to eat more than nondeprived ones in subsequent feeding also. Passage of food through the gut was examined by dissecting out the contents of each region of the gut at various times after a colored test meal. Food passed through the foregut directly into the anterior part of the midgut. It stayed in the middle third of the midgut longer than in the anterior and posterior thirds, and the first pellet resulting from the test meal appeared 4 h after the meal. The following mechanisms of feeding regulation are proposed: (a) volumetric feedback mediated by stretch receptors of the foregut and anterior third of the midgut which terminates meals; (b) the development and subsequent reduction of satietyspecific behaviors mediated either by stretch receptors or by some other means which, e.g., allow the next meal to begin; and (c) metabolites whose levels drop during deprivation, triggering a series of events which lead to the excess feeding observed. 相似文献

An ideal, hydrated, nondilute pseudobinary salt-protein-water solution model of the RBC intracellular solution has been developed to describe the osmotic behavior of human erythrocytes during freezing and thawing. Because of the hydration of intracellular solutes (mostly cell proteins), our analytical results predict that at least 16.65% of the isotonic cell water content will be retained within RBCs placed in hypertonic solutions. These findings are consistent not only with the experimental measurements of the amount of isotonic cell water retained within RBCs subjected to nonisotonic extracellular solutions (20-32%) but also with the experimental evidence that all of the water within RBCs is solvent water. By modeling the RBC intracellular solution as a hydrated salt-protein-water solution, no anomalous osmotic behavior is apparent. 相似文献

Dynamics of hydration water at the surface of a lysozyme molecule is studied by computer simulations at various hydration levels in relation with water clustering and percolation transition. Increase of the translational mobility of water molecules at the surface of a rigid lysozyme molecule upon hydration is governed by the water-water interactions. Lysozyme dynamics strongly affect translational motions of water and this dynamic coupling is maximal at hydration levels, corresponding to the formation of a spanning water network. Anomalous diffusion of hydration water does not depend on hydration level up to monolayer coverage and reflects spatial disorder. Rotational dynamics of water molecules show stretched exponential decay at low hydrations. With increasing hydration, we observe appearance of weakly bound water molecules with bulklike rotational dynamics, whose fraction achieves 20-25% at the percolation threshold. 相似文献

In the present study, we have examined in Wistar rats the effects of food or water deprivation of 3 days on the hypophyso-adrenal axis, vasopressinergic system and activity of A1 noradrenergic brain stem cell group, which is involved in the control of the hypothalamic neuro-endocrine activity. Levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and vasopressin (AVP) were determined by radio-immunoassay, and corticosterone level was determined by fluorimetric method. Plasma levels of ACTH and corticosterone were greatly increased in both groups of rats. In water-deprived rats, plasma AVP (13.83 +/- 1.63 vs. 3.03 +/- 0.23 pg/ml) and osmolality levels were significantly elevated with a marked decrease of AVP hypophysis content (272 +/- 65 vs. 1098 +/- 75 ng/mg protein), but not in food-deprived rats in which osmolality did not change and AVP remained stocked (2082 +/- 216 ng/mg protein) in the hypophysis without release in the plasma (1.11 +/- 0.23 pg/ml). These observations indicated that both food-deprivation and water-deprivation stimulated the pituitary adrenal axis thereby suggesting a stress state. AVP production is stimulated both by fluid and food restriction but is secreted with differential effects: during food restriction AVP secretion is limited to supporting the hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal system. 相似文献
