The effect of mating on the feeding and fecundity ofIxodes (Pholeoixodes) hexagonus females was studied under controlled laboratory conditions of 22–23°C and 98% relative humidity. The feeding period of mated females was 6–15 days and 11–13 days for unmated females. The mean weight of the engorged mated females was 114.84±45.89 mg, whereas, that of the engorged unmated females was significantly lower (80.61±28.84 mg). During the initial slow feeding period, the weight of mated females increased 6.6 times. At the end of the blood feeding, they had increased their initial weight 35.5 times. Unmated females never entered the rapid engorgement phase and up to 12 days of feeding period their mean weight did not increase more than 9.2 times. The pre-oviposition periods of mated and unmated females were 6–15 days and 4–12 days, respectively. The mean of the egg production efficiency was 40.26±12.47% for mated females and 35.68±12.2% for unmated females. The mean of the mass conversion efficiency was 73.6±13.7% for mated females and 66.48 ±16.55% for unmated females. Sixty per cent of the eggs deposited by mated females hatched whereas only 1% of the eggs deposited by unmated females hatched. These results indicate thatI. hexagonus females possess some predisposition for parthenogenesis and only fertility and not fecundity depends on mating.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides Supino, 1897 (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is a three‐host hard tick widely distributed in Sri Lanka. The lifecycle of the R. haemaphysaloides population in Sri Lanka was studied under laboratory conditions using fully engorged females collected from dogs. Larvae, nymphs and adults were reared on New Zealand rabbits. Engorged females weighed a mean ± standard deviation (SD) of 470.1 ± 106.5 mg and laid a mean ± SD of 4067.4 ± 3136.2 eggs within 16.1 ± 3.7 days. The mean ± SD preoviposition period was 6.5 ± 1.1 days. The mean ± SD reproductive efficiency index was 8.5 ± 4.1, and was higher in heavier females (Pearson correlation, r = 0.8; P = 0.001). The incubation period of eggs was shorter at higher temperatures. The majority (86.9%) of larvae successfully moulted after a mean ± SD premoulting period of 7.9 ± 0.7 days following a parasitic period of 3.2 ± 0.5 days. Unfed larvae survived a mean ± SD of 103.4 ± 19.8 days. Nymphs completed the bloodmeal after 3.7 ± 0.9 days, weighed 5.7 ± 1.7 mg and demonstrated a premoulting period of 15.1 ± 1.9 days. Unfed nymphs survived a mean ± SD of 45.8 ± 3.8 days. Heavier nymphs moulted into females, whereas lighter nymphs moulted into males (two‐sample t‐test, P < 0.001). The bodyweight of adult females increased more than 100‐fold after feeding. The lifecycle of R. haemaphysaloides was successfully completed on rabbits within a mean of 91.3 days (range: 69–117 days) under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

All life-stages ofSarcoptes scabiei var.canis survive in the hosts' environment for several days to several weeks depending on r.h. and temperature. Survival of larvae was comparable to males; survival of nymphs was comparable to females. Females and nymphs generally survived longer than larvae and males.Low temperature (10–15°) and high r.h. prolonged survival of all life stages. At 10–15°C, females and nymphs survived 1–3 weeks at 97% r.h., 1–2 weeks at 75% r.h. and 5–8 days at 45% r.h. At 20–25°C, survival was significantly reduced but all life-stages survived at least 2 days at 25% r.h. and 5–6 days at 75–100% r.h. Long survival off the host coupled with host-seeking behavior of these mites make it likely that environmental contamination is a source of scabies in domestic and wild mammals, and in humans.  相似文献

Encarsia bimaculata was recently described from India as a potentially useful parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci. Its developmental biology was studied in the laboratory at 25–30 °C and 70–75% RH. Results showed that E. bimaculata is a solitary, arrhenotokous, heteronomous, autoparasitoid. Mated females laid eggs internally in B. tabaci nymphs that developed as primary parasitoids. Males developed as hyperparasitoids, either in females of their own species or in other primary aphelinid parasitoids. Superparasitism was common under cage conditions. Both sexes have an egg, three larval instars, prepupal, and pupal stages. Development from egg to adult took 12.70 ± 2.10 days for females and 14.48 ± 2.60 days for males. Individual B. tabaci nymphs were examined for E. bimaculata parasitization using three isozymes: esterase, malate dehydrogenase, and xanthine dehydrogenase. All three isozymes showed differential banding patterns that identified E. bimaculata parasitized or unparasitized B. tabaci nymphs.  相似文献

A colony of Amblyomma neumanni was started with engorged females collected from cattle in the province of Salta (24° 51S, 65° 33W), Argentina. The larvae and nymphs were fed on rabbits and the adults on calves. The non-parasitic stages were maintained in darkness at 27 ± 1°C and 83–86% RH. The life cycle (pre-feeding period not tested) had a mean duration of 205.7 days. The mean time (days) for the different phases of the cycle were as follows: feeding of females 8.8, pre-oviposition 23.8, oviposition 41.4, minimum egg incubation 76.1, feeding of larvae 8.5, pre-moult to nymphs 16.4, feeding of nymphs 7.9 and pre-moult to adults 22.8. The mean recovery rates of larvae, nymphs and females were 83.8, 85.6 and 89.3%, respectively. The nymphs moulting to females were heavier (8.1 ± 2.34 mg) than those moulting to males (6.0 ± 2.34 mg; p < 0.01), but their range of engorgement weight showed overlap (2.3–16.2 versus 2.2–12.8 mg, respectively). Two gynandromorphs were detected between the nymphs. A colony ofAmblyomma parvum was started with engorged females collected from cattle in the Province of Salta (25°01 S, 63°56 W), Argentina. The progeny of those ticks were fed on rabbits and the non-parasitic stages maintained at 27±1°C, 83–86% RH in darkness. The life cycle (prefeeding period not evaluated) had a mean duration of 99.6 days. The mean time (days) for the different phases of the cycle were as follows: feeding period of females, 8.0; pre-oviposition period, 5.7; oviposition period, 17.5; minimum incubation period of the eggs, 31.8; feeding period of larvae, 3.2; premoult period to nymphs, 10.9; feeding period of nymphs, 4.7; premoult period to adults, 17.8. The oviposition pattern was typical of an ixodid tick, including a linear relationship between weights of engorged females and the number of eggs laid (r=0.8659). The males increased 18% in weight after feeding on hosts (P<0.01). The mean recovery rates of larvae, nymphs and females were 28.2%, 95.3% and 90.7%, respectively. The nymphs moulting to females were heavier (6.8±0.69 mg) than those moulting to males (3.2±0.29 mg) (P<0.01). Guinea-pigs infested with male ticks of the speciesRhipicephalus appendiculatus, and rabbits infested withR. evertsi evertsi, acquired immunity to conspecific female ticks. The hosts were first infested with male ticks and thereafter were challenged with males and females of the same species. The mean weight of the engorged females ofR. appendiculatus fed on guinea pigs previously infested with male ticks was 509.0 (±41.4) mg compared with that of females fed on control guinea pigs (651.2±31.8 mg). Similar weight differences were observed forR.e. evertsi females which fed on rabbits previously infested three times with male ticks. The mean weight of the female ticks which fed on these rabbits was 520.1 (±29.8) mg compared with 640.7 (±30.2) mg ofR.e. evertsi females which fed on control hosts. The concentration of gammaglobulins in the sera of rabbits was monitored at various intervals after the first infestation. It was found, for the first time, that infestation of laboratory animals with male ticks conferred immunity, but to a lesser degree than infestation with both sexes. It was also shown that the level of gammaglobulins increased from 3.4±0.28 g l–1 to 7.3±0.24 g l–1 in sera of rabbits hosts as a result of the feeding activity of males, but to a lesser extent than in sera of rabbits on which both sexes had fed (10.8±2.4 g l–1).  相似文献

The life history and demography of Amblyseius longispinosus Evans were studied under laboratory conditions 25–28°C and 65–85% RH using the red form of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch complex as prey. The entire development from egg to adult averaged 102.5 h for both sexes with a survival rate of 90.0%. Immature females consumed more prey eggs than males, averaging 7.9 and 6.4 eggs/day, respectively. The embryonic development time for male eggs was longer (average 45.2 h) than for female eggs (average 42.6 h). The average duration of succeeding stages did not differ between the sexes: larva, 15.7; protonymph, 21.1; and deutonymph, 23.0 h. Larvae were not observed to feed. Statistically significant differences between sexes were noted with respect to consumption of the deutonymphs (female, average 4.0±0.2; male, average 2.9±0.3 eggs/day) but not of the protonymphs. Mating occurred on the same day as adult emergence and was repeated several times during the reproductive life. Egg laying started on the second day after emergence. Parameters relating to oviposition were: fecundity, gross (50.7) and net (43.3) eggs/female; hatchability, 99.6% (gross) and 99.5% (net); the oviposition lasted at most 28 days and showed a peak in the first week. Net reproductive rate (R0) was 36.7 female offspring/female/generation time (T) of 9.0 days. The sex ratio was biased toward the females (71.9%), while the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.4 with a doubling time (DT) of 1.7 days. In order to determine the effect of various hosts on the feeding performance of the tick Hyalomma truncatum, we used three mammalian species as hosts. Larvae and nymphs of H. truncatum were fed, under controlled laboratory conditions, on gerbils, guinea-pigs and rabbits. The larvae fed for 4.3±1.4 days on gerbils, 5.6±1.3 days on guinea-pigs and 4.7±1.2 days on rabbits. The mean weights of the larvae which fed on the rabbits, guinea-pigs and gerbils were 0.58± 0.09, 0.46±0.04 and 0.45±0.04 mg. respectively. The feeding periods of the nymphs on gerbils, guinea-pigs and rabbits were 7.9±1.3, 8.6±1.3 and 9.6±2.2 days respectively. The mean weights of the nymphs which fed on the gerbils, guinea-pigs and rabbits were 22.5±2.8, 19.7±1.3 and 15.8±1.4 mg, respectively. Hyalomma truncatum demonstrated a life cycle of a three-host tick on gerbils and guinea-pigs and of a two-host tick on rabbits. The evolutionary advantage of a two-host cycle over a three-host cycle in metastriate ticks is discussed.  相似文献

The life cycle of Suidasia medanensis (= pontifica) was studied under laboratory conditions at 26°C and 86% relative humidity. Freshly laid eggs were observed until they developed into adults and the periods between stages were recorded. Production of eggs by mated females was monitored until they died. The eggs required an average of 12.6 ± 0.6 days to develop into adults. Mean longevity of mated females and males was similar (48.6 ± 13 and 49.1 ± 20 days, respectively). The conditions used in this study may be considered optimal for in vitro culture of S. medanensis.  相似文献

The tortoise tick Hyalomma aegyptium has a typical three-host life-cycle. Whereas its larvae and nymphs are less host-specific feeding on a variety of tetrapods, tortoises of the genus Testudo are principal hosts of adults. Ticks retained this trait also in our study under laboratory conditions, while adults were reluctant to feed on mammalian hosts. Combination of feeding larvae and nymphs on guinea pigs and feeding of adults on Testudo marginata tortoises provided the best results. Feeding period of females was on average 25 days (range 17–44), whereas males remain after female engorgement on tortoise host. Female pre-oviposition period was 14 days (3–31), followed by 24 days of oviposition (18–29). Pre-eclosion and eclosion, both together, takes 31 days (21–43). Larvae fed 5 days (3–9), then molted to nymphs after 17 days (12–23). Feeding period of nymphs lasted 7 days (5–10), engorged nymphs molted to adults after 24 days (19–26). Sex ratio of laboratory hatched H. aegyptium was nearly equal (1:1.09). The average weight of engorged female was 0.95 (0.72–1.12) g. The average number of laid eggs was 6,900 (6,524–7,532) per female, it was significantly correlated with weight of engorged female. Only 2.8% of engorged larvae and 1.8% of engorged nymphs remained un-molted and died. Despite the use of natural host species, feeding success of females reached only 45%. The cause of differences in overwintering success between the sexes in Orius sauteri (Poppius) and O. minutus (Linnaeus) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) was investigated in the laboratory. The survival rate of adults was examined in a screen house outdoors during the winters of 1995–1996 and 1996–1997. None of the males of either species survived until spring in either year. However, 63.9% and 40.5% of the females in O. sauteri and O. minutus, respectively, survived the winter in 1995–1996, and 54.5% and 43.2%, respectively, in 1996–1997. Most of the males died by early winter. In both species, the adult females reared under short days (= L11:D13) survived for a long period at 5 or 0°C, while the males reared under the same photoperiod died shortly after transfer to 5 or 0°C from 22°C. The males and females kept at same temperature conditions under long days (= L16:D8) died early. When nymphs were kept under long days at 22°C, the lipid content in the female and male adults of O. sauteri was 27.9% and 17.7%, respectively. When nymphs were kept under short days, their lipid content was significantly higher (41.1%) than that of those reared under long days for females, but lipid content was comparable in the males regardless of photoperiod (15.6%). In O. minutus, the mean lipid content was 27.2% in females and 19.0% in males under long days at 22°C, and 40.8% in females and 19.8% in males under short days. Thus, a large amount of lipid was accumulated only in females kept under short days in both species. These results suggest that short days induced diapause only in adult females but not in males. Due to the lack of diapause and shortage of lipid accumulation, males may not be able to survive the winter.  相似文献

Allothrombium pulvinum Ewing is a common natural enemy of aphids and other small arthropods in China. It is univoltine species. The eggs hatch in spring, nymphs emerge in early summer, and adults emerge in autumn. Larvae are ectoparasites of aphids, whereas deutonymphs and adults are free-living predators of aphids, spider mites and some lepidopterous eggs. Adults hibernate in soil during winter and females lay their eggs in spring. In the laboratory the duration of immature stages is 74 days at 20–30°C. Larvae kill their host within 1–3 days when the mite load of the host is 2 or more. They decrease the reproductive rate of adult aphids and arrest the development of early-instar aphid nymphs when the mite load is 1. Larvae are capable of controlling the host population growth when the level of parasitism is high. Owing to its wide occurrence,A. pulvinum could be a potential candidate in the biological control of aphids. It is suggested that its impact on the host pest be evaluated in IPM programs in the future.  相似文献

The minimum life cycle of Dermacentor silvarum Olenev had a mean duration of 87.5 days (range 74–102 days) under laboratory conditions [(27±1 °C), 70% RH, 6 L: 18 D]. The mean time in (days) for the different stages of its cycle was as follows: incubation period of eggs was 15.3 days; prefeeding, feeding and premoulting periods of larvae and nymphs averaged 5.5, 4.0 and 7.3 days, and 5.2, 5.0 and 14.6 days, respectively; prefeeding, feeding, preoviposition and oviposition periods of female adults lasted for 7.8, 4.5, 4.3 and 14.0 days, respectively. There existed a highly significant correlation between engorged body weight of females and egg masses laid (r = 0.9877, p<0.001). The reproductive efficiency index (REI) and reproductive fitness index (RFI) in females were 11.09 and 9.58, respectively. No relationship between nymphal engorged body weight and resultant sexes was observed. Delayed feeding and non-oviposition (in June and July) existed in females, and low temperature (−10 °C) treatment for 45 days could terminate oviposition diapause. However, the egg masses laid by post-diapause females were significantly smaller than those laid by females engorged in March, April and May.  相似文献

Life history studies were conducted in the laboratory on the African parasitoid Prorops nasuta Waterston (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), a parasitoid of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). The female wasp enters an infested coffee berry, kills the adult borer and seals the entrance of the berry with the body of the borer, impeding the entry of other organisms into the berry. The preoviposition period ranges from 3 to 14 days (mean 5.42 ± 0.37 SE). During this time females feed on the immature stages and paralyse fully grown larvae and pupae of the CBB. P. nasuta is an idiobiont solitary ectoparasitoid. Eggs are laid externally on the last instar larvae and pupae. Mean development time (egg to adult) for males and females was 27.7 (±0.37 SE) and 30 (±0.12 SE) days, respectively. Median survival for wasps fed on final instar CBB larvae was 27.7 days, significantly longer than any other treatment, while for females without food it was 2.5 days. In culture, females produced an average of 4.3 (±0.39 SE) progeny during their lifetimes. Adults began emerging at 30.6 days (±0.28 SE) after cultures were started and peak production was reached at 36 days, declining thereafter. Males normally emerged from coffee beans 2–3 days before females. Males usually emerged from 07:00 to 09:00h and females from 10:00 to 14:00 h. The culture sex ratio (proportion of males) was 0.21. Brachionus plicatilis raised in our laboratory in sea water reproduces asexually even under high crowding conditions (at least 40 individuals per ml). Amictic females were induced to produce mictic females, males and resting eggs by reducing the concentration of the sea water culture medium. Mictic females and males appeared predominantly among the progeny produced by the amictic females during 4 days following their transfer into 25% sea water. Resting eggs appeared first 5–12 days after the onset of the experiment. Following the disappearance of males, the culture consisted of amictic females.Resting eggs produced by the method described above may be preserved for at least three months at –14°C or by desiccation at room temperature. Under the appropriate experimental conditions, resting eggs hatch into amictic females. Since B. plicatilis is one of the most commonly used food sources of fish larvae in aquaculture, the methods reported here may offer an easy and versatile way of preserving rotifer culture stock to be used on demand.  相似文献

We conducted laboratory and field experiments to elucidate the life history of Ixodiphagus hookeri, a parasitoid of the ixodid tick Amblyomma variegatum in Western Kenya. Ixodiphagus hookeri females oviposited in unfed host nymphs as well as engorged nymphs, but rarely in engorged larvae. While I. hookeri developed to adults in engorged nymphs, the eggs laid in unfed nymphs disappeared within 2 days after oviposition. As temperature increased, development time of I. hookeri from oviposition to adult emergence in engorged nymphs decreased from 46 days at 23 °C to 35 days at 28 °C, and their immature survival in engorged nymphs decreased from 67% at 23 °C to 22% at 28 °C. No parasitoid adult emerged from hosts at 30 °C. Individual hosts parasitized by single females produced 42–53 adult wasps, 73% of which were females. As a typical pro-ovigenic species, I. hookeri females had an average of 84 mature eggs at emergence and lived only for a few days. When laboratory-reared, unfed nymphs of A. variegatum were attached to cattle for 4–9 days in subsistence farmers’ fields in Western Kenya, 25% of the engorged nymphs and 4% of the unfed nymphs on cattle were parasitized by I. hookeri, demonstrating that I. hookeri females search for and oviposit in A. variegatum nymphs on cattle. Unlike other strains of I. hookeri that overwinter as eggs in unfed nymphs, I. hookeri could continuously reproduce throughout the year in Western Kenya.  相似文献

The vomeronasal organ, the chemosensory organ of the vomeronasal system, is vital in determining sexual and gender-specific behavior in mice. Here, whole-cell voltage-activated currents of individual mouse vomeronasal sensory neurons of two strains (BALB/c and CBA) were measured and correlated to sex in each strain. The average resting membrane potentials, maximal outward current magnitudes, and kinetics of activation and inactivation, were found to be independent of sex. Maximal inward current magnitudes differed significantly across gender in CBA, whereas they did not significantly differ in male and female BALB/c mice: BALB/c males –347±45 pA (n=51), and females –430±56 pA (n=27); CBA males –308±36 pA (n=56) and females –155±18 pA (n=28). These ticks and their progenies were fed on rabbits and the non-parasitic stages maintained in darkness at 27±1°C, 83–86% RH. The life cycle (pre-feeding and oviposition periods not tested) of A. pseudoparvum had a mean duration of 90.9 days. The mean time (days) for the different periods of the cycle were as follows: Feeding of females, 12.3; pre-oviposition, 5.1; minimum egg incubation, 33.4; feeding of larvae, 5.6; pre-moult to nymphs, 11.5; feeding of nymphs, 6.9; pre-moult to adults, 16.1. The paper investigated the life cycle of the hard tick Haemaphysalis doenitzi under laboratory conditions and its phylogeny based on mitochondrial 16S rDNA. The results revealed that the complete life cycle of H. doenitzi requires a mean duration of 109.6 days ranging from 91 to 137 days and the average prefeeding, feeding and premoulting periods of larvae, nymphs and females and the eggs hatching period are 18.7, 26.9, 38.9, and 25.1 days, respectively. In addition, the weight of engorged females is highly correlated with the number of egg masses laid (r = 0.936, P < 0.001). The female reproductive efficiency index and reproductive fitness index are 13.4 and 12.8, respectively. The mean weight of the engorged nymphs (2.77 mg) moulting to females is much higher than those (1.68 mg) moulting to males, which could be used as an index to predict sexes in this species. The ratio of male to female is 1:1.01. Moreover, multisequence alignments and phylogenetic tree constructed based on the mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences suggest that H. doenitzi is genetically close to H. longicornis.  相似文献
