Many large marine vertebrates are today threatened by human activities and it is therefore crucial to obtain information on their distribution and behaviour at sea. In particular little is known about the time necessary for juveniles to acquire the foraging skills of adults. We tracked 13 juvenile wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans by satellite telemetry during their first year at sea. They covered an average distance of 184,000 km during the first year and restricted their dispersal to the unproductive waters of the subtropical Indian Ocean and Tasman Sea. This region of low wind velocities does not overlap with the foraging areas used by adults. After an innate phase of rapid dispersal with a fixed flight direction, young birds progressively increased their daily flight distances and attained adult flight efficiency within their first six months at sea. The complete overlap of the juveniles’ foraging ranges with major long‐line fisheries in the subtropical waters constitutes a major threat that could jeopardize the long term recovery ability of populations of the endangered wandering albatross in the Indian Ocean.  相似文献

In species defending territories, fitness of newly independent juveniles could depend on phenotypic quality or early access to vacant resources as a result of rapid dispersal. In the first case, parent-offspring conflict will arise when parents cease feeding maturing offspring while these still demand provisioning. In the latter case, the young should decide when to stop begging to search for vacant territories. I radio-tracked 72 juvenile tawny owls from independence to sexual maturity to investigate whether parents or offspring decided the timing of the onset of independence and compare effects of age versus date of independence on survival and reproductive status. Juvenile owls stopped begging when 90–123 d old. This was synchronous within broods, independent of gender or age rank. Independence age of cross-fostered young varied across foster nests but was independent of hatching nest. After independence, young roosted in their parents' territory for 18 d on average before dispersal. This suggests that juvenile owls would rather extend dependency than disperse early. As predicted from this behaviour, age of independence had a positive influence on survival and reproductive status at maturity, whereas there were no effects of date of independence.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that female house mice (F1 generation of wild caught Mus domesticus) should preferentially invest in own offspring if confronted with young of different degrees of relatedness. The maternal behaviour of females with litters of 4 own and 4 unrelated alien young (cross-fostered at day 1 of lactation) was analysed during a lactation period of 22 days both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding (food was restricted by 20%). Cross-fostering and restricted feeding had no effect on the amount of time spent nursing until weaning. Under both feeding conditions the females did not differ in their maternal behaviour towards own and alien young: there were no significant differences either in the amount of time spent nursing own versus alien pups or in the time spent licking own versus alien young. Weight gain of own and alien = wild littermates did not differ significantly in mixed litters and was similar both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding. Such indiscriminate behaviour might be adaptive if female house mice prefer to communally nest with a relative and thus improve their inclusive fitness by investing in own and related offspring in a communal nest. Under moderate restricted feeding females could not wean the entire litter but reduced litter size by cannibalizing on average 2.7 pups (75% of the pups were killed when they were 4–8 days old). Females with cross-fostered litters killed as many own as alien young. This suggests that females cannot discriminate between own and unrelated young if cross-fostering takes place at day 1 of lactation. Besides testing kin recognition abilities, the experiments also allow analysis of the weaning strategy of females under food shortage. Under restricted feeding, body weight of the females was significantly lower during middle lactation than under ad libitum feeding. Weaning weight of young in reduced litters under food restriction (9–10 g) did not differ significantly from weaning weight of young in litters of 7–10 young, but was lower than that of young in similar sized litters (litter size 6), under ad libitum feeding. The maternal behaviour of cannibalizing some young under food shortage can be interpreted as a weaning strategy which results in the largest number of offspring that can be raised to a minimal weaning weight of 9–10 g. Such a weaning strategy might represent a favourable trade-off between number and size of young produced.  相似文献

Dispersal is one of the most fundamental components of ecology. Dispersal is also particularly relevant in an era of unprecedented habitat loss and climate change. We used a unique dataset to examine dispersal in gray ratsnakes (Pantherophis spiloides). Over a decade, we marked and released >1,500 hatchlings while monitoring the population of ratsnakes over a large area (≈1,900 ha). We tested the hypotheses that dispersal should be (a) largely restricted to within the local population given previous genetic evidence of limited gene flow at greater distances and (b) male biased because male gray ratsnakes are under strong sexual selection. We recaptured 69 gray ratsnakes that had been marked as hatchlings after periods ranging from 1 day to 11 years. We found that dispersal distance increased with time, but was not significantly sex-biased, and that gray ratsnakes are extremely faithful to their communal hibernacula (only 2.8% of 497 juvenile and adult ratsnakes captured at least twice at communal hibernacula changed sites between years). Thus, dispersal is largely limited to the period from hatching until an individual joins a communal hibernaculum. Based on the spatial patterns of dispersal we observed, the most plausible explanation for dispersal is that hatchling ratsnakes disperse from their natal site to join a neighboring communal hibernaculum. Our study yielded the most reliable data on dispersal distances from birth by a snake to date.  相似文献

The period prior to an individual emigrating from its natal site and initiating dispersal is important for developing the skills that are ultimately required for surviving natal dispersal. Using a novel method to quantify the early movements of 35 juvenile golden eagles fitted with satellite transmitters, we hypothesised that variation in golden eagles’ post‐fledging dependence period (PFDP) was determined by variation in how quickly movement skills were acquired in order to become independent and disperse. Twenty nine young eagles exhibited an initial increase in mobility (‘ontogenic phase’) levelling off after a median of 68 d, followed by a period of maintained mobility (‘maintained phase’) that lasted a median of 99 d (range 24–176). Eagles that developed their mobility more quickly during the ontogenic phase had a correspondingly shorter ontogenic phase. Despite this, most of the inter‐individual variation in the length of the PFDP resulted from variation in the length of the ‘maintained phase’. In general, females (the larger sex) developed more slowly and had a longer ontogenic phase. Males exhibited dispersal strategies around two modes with some dispersing early (mode 1: 89.5 d) and others late (mode 2: 220 d). In contrast females dispersed around a unimodal distribution of timing (mode 167.5 d). Apart from six individuals (mostly males) which dispersed with no discernible maintained phase, most offspring remained in the parental home range after they were fully mobile, even those that developed mobility quickly, suggesting that the PFDP in golden eagles is not simply a function of physical capacity for independence, but also a period when young eagles decide to remain, and are tolerated by parents, in their parental home range before dispersing. We suggest that delaying dispersal may be a beneficial strategy for young raptors facing a competitive environment after PFDP.  相似文献

When fitness returns are sex-specific, selection should favor the facultative adjustment of offspring sex ratios. Seasonal shifts in offspring sex ratios are predicted to be particularly beneficial in short-lived, sexually dimorphic species in which hatching date is linked to adult size, which is related to fitness in a sex-specific fashion. We used four time series of hatching dates and progeny sex ratios in the brown anole (Anolis sagrei), a short-lived lizard with male-biased sexual size dimorphism, to test for such a seasonal shift in progeny sex ratio. In 2 of the 4 years, we also released hatchlings to their natural environment to test for sex-specific effects of hatching date on juvenile survival and adult size. We found that the relationship between hatching date and size the following year was significantly steeper in males than in females, and previous work has shown that adult size is more strongly tied to fitness in males than in females. Based on those results and on further evidence linking hatching date and body size to sex-specific survival and reproductive success, we predicted that sex ratios should shift from male- to female-biased as the breeding season progressed. Contrary to our prediction, we detected no clear seasonal shift in progeny sex ratio. Furthermore, although juvenile survival was correlated with hatching date, this relationship did not consistently differ between the sexes. The observation that progeny sex ratios are seasonally invariant despite several apparent links to adult fitness suggests that the evolution of a seasonal sex-ratio bias is either inherently constrained or requires a stronger selective advantage with respect to juvenile survival.  相似文献

Although many studies have investigated the feeding habits of Palaearctic raptors, few have analysed non-breeding populations during dispersal. Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata), a threatened species in Western Europe, has a relatively long and critical dispersal period. We studied feeding habits, prey selection, and the influence of prey density on floater abundance in this species during its dispersal period in southern Spain. Differences were found between the diet of floaters and that of the closest breeding populations. Diet diversity was rather low for floaters, with European wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) being the main prey and the only prey positively selected. Moreover, the number of floater Bonelli’s eagles observed in the dispersal areas was positively associated with rabbit abundance. Other prey included red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) and pigeons (Columba sp.). We propose measures to match suitable prey availability for floater eagles in settlement areas and the use of such areas as human hunting fields.  相似文献

The study of the spatial distribution of relatives in a population under contrasted environmental conditions provides critical insights into the flexibility of dispersal behaviour and the role of environmental conditions in shaping population relatedness and social structure. Yet few studies have evaluated the effects of fluctuating environmental conditions on relatedness structure of solitary species in the wild. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of interannual variations in environmental conditions on the spatial distribution of relatives [spatial genetic structure (SGS)] and dispersal patterns of a wild population of eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus), a solitary rodent of North America. Eastern chipmunks depend on the seed of masting trees for reproduction and survival. Here, we combined the analysis of the SGS of adults with direct estimates of juvenile dispersal distance during six contrasted years with different dispersal seasons, population sizes and seed production. We found that environmental conditions influences the dispersal distances of juveniles and that male juveniles dispersed farther than females. The extent of the SGS of adult females varied between years and matched the variation in environmental conditions. In contrast, the SGS of males did not vary between years. We also found a difference in SGS between males and females that was consistent with male‐biased dispersal. This study suggests that both the dispersal behaviour and the relatedness structure in a population of a solitary species can be relatively labile and change according to environmental conditions.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Wild carrot is the ancestor of cultivated carrot and is the most important gene pool for carrot breeding. Transgenic carrot may be released into the environment in the future. The aim of the present study was to determine how far a gene can disperse in wild carrot populations, facilitating risk assessment and management of transgene introgression from cultivated to wild carrots and helping to design sampling strategies for germplasm collections.

Methods

Wild carrots were sampled from Meijendel and Alkmaar in The Netherlands and genotyped with 12 microsatellite markers. Spatial autocorrelation analyses were used to detect spatial genetic structures (SGSs). Historical gene dispersal estimates were based on an isolation by distance model. Mating system and contemporary pollen dispersal were estimated using 437 offspring of 20 mothers with different spatial distances and a correlated paternity analysis in the Meijendel population.

Key Results

Significant SGSs are found in both populations and they are not significantly different from each other. Combined SGS analysis indicated significant positive genetic correlations up to 27 m. Historical gene dispersal σg and neighbourhood size Nb were estimated to be 4–12 m [95 % confidence interval (CI): 3–25] and 42–73 plants (95 % CI: 28–322) in Meijendel and 10–31 m (95 % CI: 7–∞) and 57–198 plants (95 % CI: 28–∞) in Alkmaar with longer gene dispersal in lower density populations. Contemporary pollen dispersal follows a fat-tailed exponential-power distribution, implying pollen of wild carrots could be dispersed by insects over long distance. The estimated outcrossing rate was 96 %.

Conclusions

SGSs in wild carrots may be the result of high outcrossing, restricted seed dispersal and long-distance pollen dispersal. High outcrossing and long-distance pollen dispersal suggest high frequency of transgene flow might occur from cultivated to wild carrots and that they could easily spread within and between populations.  相似文献

Ring recoveries were used to explore the effect of early experience on the subsequent survival and dispersal of young Sparrowhawks in two areas in south Scotland. Young raised on high grade territories were recovered in greater proportion than young on low grade territories, implying that they had survived better after leaving the nest. Recovery rate tended to decline with increasing elevation of the nesting territory, implying that young from the high-ground territories survived less well than those from low-ground territories. Recovery rate showed no relationship with brood-size or sex composition, or with maternal age (yearling or older).
After the post-fledging period, dispersal distances were greater in females than in males and showed significant increases with increasing elevation of nesting territory (one area only) and with lateness of laying (or fledging) date. Regardless of laying date, young males from yearling mothers also dispersed further than young from older mothers, and young males from high elevation territories further than those from lower territories. No significant relationships emerged between dispersal distances and grade of natal territory, brood size or sex composition.  相似文献

The small-scale dispersal of the European corn borer (ECB) was studied in a release–recapture experiment using reared dye-marked adults. Thereby, six light trap cages were set up across two maize fields at 50-m intervals. In total, 736 marked ECBs were released, of which 10.2% were recaptured together with 212 unmarked naturally occurring adults after a period of 48 h. All marked–released individuals left the release point, with a mean dispersal distance of 195 m. Eighty-two per cent of the recaptured ECBs moved to the second maize field across a ditch and associated shrubs. The spatial and temporal patterns of incidence of naturally occurring ECBs in the traps were consistent with those of the marked moths and showed an inhomogeneous distribution. There was a highly significant relationship between male and female densities in the cages. No ECBs were caught during a period of adverse weather conditions. Dispersal distances may be influenced by plant size, weather conditions during the flight, pheromonal patterns in the field and the timing of the flight.  相似文献

Environmental factors during early development may have profound effects on subsequent life-history traits in many bird species. In wild birds, sex-specific effects of early ontogeny on natal dispersal and future reproduction are not well understood. The objective of this work was to determine whether hatching date and pre-fledging mass and condition of free-living Great Tits Parus major have any subsequent effect on individuals’ natal dispersal and reproductive performance at first breeding. Both males and females dispersed longer distances in coniferous than in deciduous forests, while dispersal was condition-dependent only in males (heavier as nestlings dispersed farther). In females, mass and condition at pre-fledging stage correlated significantly with clutch size, but not with subsequent reproductive performance as measured by fledging success or offspring quality. In contrast, heavier males as nestlings had higher future fledging success and heavier offspring in their broods compared with those in worse condition as nestlings. The hatching date of female as well as male parents was the only parental parameter related to the number of eggs hatched at first breeding. These results indicate that pre-fledging mass and condition predict subsequent fitness components in this bird species. We suggest that sex-specific relationships between a disperser’s condition and its selectivity with respect to breeding habitat and subsequent performance need to be considered in future models of life-history evolution.  相似文献

The behaviour of five broods of radio-tagged Spanish Imperial Eagles Aquila heliaca adalberti was studied in Doñana National Park, Spain during the post-fledging period. The distance between perching sites and nest, the mean flight duration and distance, the percentage of time spent flying and the home range all increased exponentially with age. As the young got older, the parents spent less time in their vicinity. Young were not seen hunting, but depended on their parents for food. They begged and chased their parents throughout the post-fledging period, with higher intensity at the end. Nevertheless, the adults became progressively more reluctant to feed them, as reflected in the decrease in feeding frequency and in the number of approaching flights towards the young. At the end of the post-fledging period, adults often performed aerial displays and frequently chased their offspring. The age of independence of the different young studied varied between 123 and 145 days. The correlations between individual independence and the dates when the young were last fed by their parents, and when the highest intensity of parental aggressive behaviour occurred, were higher than correlations with the variables related to the maturation of flying. Therefore, it is suggested that parental 'meanness' and aggressive behaviour may be the factors determining the date of juvenile independence and dispersal from the home territory.  相似文献

ABSTRACT For seabirds raising young under conditions of limited food availability, reducing chick provisioning and chick growth rates are the primary means available to avoid abandonment of a breeding effort. For most seabirds, however, baseline data characterizing chick growth and development under known feeding conditions are unavailable, so it is difficult to evaluate chick nutritional status as it relates to foraging conditions near breeding colonies. To address this need, we examined the growth and development of young Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia), a cosmopolitan, generalist piscivore, reared in captivity and fed ad libitum and restricted (ca. one‐third lower caloric intake) diets. Ad libitum‐fed chicks grew at similar rates and achieved a similar size at fledging as previously documented for chicks in the wild and had energetic demands that closely matched allometric predictions. We identified three general characteristics of food‐restricted Caspian Tern chicks compared to ad libitum chicks: (1) lower age‐specific body mass, (2) lower age‐specific skeletal and feather size, such as wing chord length, and (3) heightened levels of corticosterone in blood, both for baseline levels and in response to acute stress. Effects of diet restriction on feather growth (10–11% slower growth in diet‐restricted chicks) were less pronounced than effects on structural growth (37–52% slower growth) and body mass (24% lower at fledging age), apparently due to preferential allocation of food resources to maintain plumage growth. Our results suggest that measurements of chick body mass and feather development (e.g., wing chord or primary length) or measurement of corticosterone levels in the blood would allow useful evaluation of the nutritional status of chicks reared in the wild and of food availability in the foraging range of adults. Such evaluations could also inform demography studies (e.g., predict future recruitment) and assist in evaluating designated piscivorous waterbird conservation (colony) sites.  相似文献

Natal dispersal in a vagile carnivore, the American marten (Martes americana), was studied by comparing radio-tracking data and microsatellite genetic structure in two populations occupying contrasting habitats. The genetic differentiation determined among groups of individuals using F(ST) indices appeared to be weak in both landscapes, and showed no increase with geographical distance. Genetic structure investigated using pairwise genetic distances between individuals conversely showed a pattern of isolation by distance (IBD), but only in the population occurring in a homogeneous high-quality habitat, therefore showing the advantage of individual-based analyses in detecting within-population processes and local landscape effects. The telemetry study of juveniles revealed a leptokurtic distribution of dispersal distances in both populations, and estimates of the mean squared parent-offspring axial distance (sigma2) inferred both from the genetic pattern of IBD and from the radio-tracking survey showed that most juveniles make little contribution to gene flow.  相似文献

Radio-transmitters were fitted on 146 juvenile Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus (116 hens, 30 cocks) to study the timing, frequency and distances of dispersal on managed grouse moors in northern England between 1999 and 2002. A third of the radiotagged birds were shot. Disturbance on shoot days meant that radiotagged birds were shot at points more than twice as far from the catch location as the points when they were last recorded alive. For birds that were shot, the distance from the catch location to the place they were shot was more than twice the natal dispersal distances of the survivors. Therefore, shot birds were excluded from the dispersal analysis. Juvenile hens dispersed significantly further (mean 861 m, range 50–4660 m) than juvenile cocks (mean 343 m, range 90–660 m). Dispersal distances were not related to predispersal Grouse densities at the catch area in summer or to Grouse densities in the following spring. The mean date of dispersal for juvenile hens was 6 October ± 4 days (se), with only one record of spring dispersal (14 March) of 1490 m.  相似文献

The dispersal pattern of the African giant snail, Achatina fulica(Férussac) was examined by radio-tracking for six months.They showed typically nocturnal locomotory activities. Theiractivities differed among three developmental stages; juvenile,young adult, and old adult. Juveniles dispersed for the longestdistances. The most active juvenile moved 500 m in 6 months.Young adults and old adults travelled only within a narrow area,although the dispersal range for young adults was greater thanthat of old adults.
