Some parasite cuckoo species lay eggs that, to the human eye, appear to mimic the appearance of the eggs of their favourite hosts, which hinders discrimination and removal of their eggs by host species. Hitherto, perception of cuckoo-host egg mimicry has been estimated based on human vision or spectrophotometry, which does not account for what the receivers' eye (i.e. hosts) actually discriminates. Using a discrimination model approach that reproduces host retinal functioning, and museum egg collections collected in the south of Finland, where at least six different races of the European cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) coexist, I first assess whether the colour design of cuckoo eggs of different races maximizes matching for two favourite avian hosts, viz. the redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) and the pied wagtail (Motacilla alba). Second, I assess the role of nest luminosity on host perception of mimicry by the same two hosts. Phoenicurus-cuckoo eggs showed a better chromatic matching with the redstart-host eggs than other cuckoo races, and in most cases can not be discriminated. Sylvia-cuckoo eggs, however, showed better achromatic matching with redstart-host eggs than Phoenicurus-cuckoo eggs. Also, Motacilla-cuckoo eggs showed poorer chromatic and achromatic matching with pied wagtail-host eggs than Sylvia-cuckoo eggs. Nest luminosity affected chromatic and achromatic differences between cuckoo and host eggs, although only minimally affected the proportion of cuckoo eggs discriminated by chromatic signals. These results reveal that cuckoo races as assessed by humans do not entirely match with host perception of matching and that achromatic mechanisms could play a main role in the discrimination of cuckoo eggs at low-light levels. 相似文献

Brood parasitism in birds is one of the best examples of coevolutionary interactions in vertebrates. Coevolution between hosts and parasites is assumed to occur because the parasite imposes strong selection pressures on its hosts, reducing their fitness and thereby favouring counter-adaptations (e.g. egg rejection) which, in turn, select for parasite resistance (e.g. egg mimicry). Great spotted cuckoos ( Clamator glandarius ) are usually considered a brood parasite with eggs almost perfectly mimicking those of their host, the magpie ( Pica pica ). However, Cl. glandarius also exploits South African hosts with very different eggs, both in colour and size, while the Cl. glandarius eggs are similar to those laid in nests of European hosts. Here, we used spectrophotometric techniques for the first time to quantify mimicry of parasitic eggs for eight different host species. We found: (1) non-significant differences in appearance of Cl. glandarius eggs laid in nests of different host species, although eggs laid in South Africa and Europe differed significantly; (2) contrary to the general assumption that Cl. glandarius eggs better mimic those of the main host in Europe ( P. pica ), Cl. glandarius eggs more closely resembled those of the azure-winged magpie ( Cyanopica cyana ), a potential host in which there is no evidence of recent parasitism; (3) the appearance of Cl. glandarius eggs was not significantly related to the appearance of host eggs. We discuss three possible reasons why Cl. glandarius eggs resemble eggs of some of their hosts. We suggest that colouration of Cl. glandarius eggs is an apomorphic trait, and that variation between eggs laid in South African and European host nests is due to genetic isolation among these populations and not due to variation in colouration of host eggs. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79 , 551–563. 相似文献

Great Spotted Cuckoo nestlings were shown, after some days in the nest, to have begging calls that differed depending on whether they were being reared by Magpies or Carrion Crows. They also produced calls of a pitch and repetition rate that implied a high level of hunger. 相似文献

The schistosome eggshell is a hardened and tanned structure made from cross-linked proteins. It is synthesized within the female worm from many different kinds of proteins and glycoproteins. Once the egg is released in the circulation, the outer surface of the eggshell is exposed and hence a direct site of interaction between the parasite and the host. The major eggshell protein is p14, but about one third of the eggshell is made from common cellular proteins, some of which are known to be immunogenic. This has many consequences for parasite-host interactions. However, so far, the eggshell has gained little attention from researchers. We will discuss the structure of the eggshell and its role in granuloma formation, host factor binding and egg excretion. 相似文献

Acetylcholinesterase. Two types of inhibition by an organophosphorus compound: one the formation of phosphorylated enzyme and the other analogous to inhibition by substrate 下载免费PDF全文
1. The kinetics of the reaction of di-(2-chloroethyl) 3-chloro-4-methylcoumarin-7-yl phosphate (haloxon) and related compounds with acetylcholinesterase were studied and found to be unusual. 2. By a progressive reaction haloxon produces a di-(2-chloroethyl)phosphorylated enzyme. The influence of substrate on this reaction leading to a phosphorylated active centre was studied. From competition experiments between inhibitor and substrate values of K(m) for acetylcholine and acetylthiocholine of 0.79mm and 0.23mm respectively were derived. 3. Haloxon also combines with acetylcholinesterase by a non-progressive reaction, producing a complex that is reversible by dilution and by high concentrations of acetylcholine and acetylthiocholine. From this non-progressive reaction the competition between haloxon and substrate was studied, and it was shown that haloxon combines with a site involved in inhibition by substrate. From competition experiments the following dissociation constants were derived: for combination of haloxon and this site K(i) is 4.9mum and for the combination of substrates with this site K(88) values are 12mm and 3.3mm for acetylcholine and acetylthiocholine respectively. 4. The non-phosphorus-containing compound 3-chloro-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin was shown to be a good reagent for the site involved in inhibition by substrate; its dissociation constant for the combination with this site is 30mum. 5. In order to interpret the experimental results, theoretical equations were derived for an enzyme with two binding sites to both of which substrate and inhibitor can combine. The equations correlate the activity of the enzyme with the concentration of substrate and inhibitor, for both progressive and non-progressive inhibition. These equations are applicable to reactions of acetylcholinesterase with organophosphorus compounds, carbamates etc. and may be applicable to other enzymes possessing two binding sites. 相似文献

Well-characterized traits important to Candida albicans virulence, such as hyphal formation or secreted proteinase activity, play no known role in Candida glabrata virulence. Likewise, some C. glabrata characteristics, such as chromatin-based regulation of the large telomeric family of lectins encoded by the EPA (epithelial adhesin) genes, have no precise parallels in C. albicans. However, similarities between the two species, for example in population structure, in the large numbers of (putative) adhesins that they encode, and in phenotypic plasticity conferred by phenotypic switching, suggest that they share general strategies in adaptation to an opportunistic lifestyle. 相似文献

A classic example of a mutualism is the one between fig plants (Ficus) and their specialized and obligate pollinating wasps. The wasps deposit eggs in fig ovules, which the larvae then consume. Because the wasps derive their fitness only from consumed seeds, this mutualism can persist only if the wasps are prevented from laying eggs in all ovules. The search for mechanisms that can limit oviposition and stabilize the wasp-seed conflict has spanned more than three decades. We use a simple foraging model, parameterized with data from two Ficus species, to show how fig morphology reduces oviposition rates and helps to resolve the wasp-seed conflict. We also propose additional mechanisms, based on known aspects of fig biology, which can prevent even large numbers of wasps from ovipositing in all ovules. It has been suggested that in mutualistic symbioses, the partner that controls the physical resources, in this case Ficus, ultimately controls the rate at which hosts are converted to visitors, regardless of relative evolutionary rates. Our approach provides a mechanistic implementation of this idea, with potential applications to other mutualisms and to theories of virulence. 相似文献

Functional shifts in the use of parasitized hosts by a tephritid fly: the role of host quality 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Superparasitism, a phenomenon in which parasitic insects layeggs in already-exploited hosts, provides a useful context inwhich to examine the dynamics of parental investment. This studyexplored conditions under which female Mediterranean fruit flies(Ceratitis capitata) shift from avoiding superparasitism ofhost fruit to preferring it, even placing eggs direcdy intoexisting egg-laying cavities. An a priori hypothesis of costsand benefits was used to predict how use and avoidance of parasitizedfruit would change in -response to changes in fruit size andripeness. We predicted that avoidance would decrease with increasingfruit size, while use would increase with decreasing ripeness.Using a field-cage assay, ripeness was held constant and thesize of host coffee berries manipulated. Avoidance of parasitizedberries was significandy less pronounced on large berries thanon small ones. In a second experiment, size was held constantand ripeness manipulated. On unripe berries, females depositedthe majority of clutches directly into existing egg-laying cavities. On ripe berries, by contrast, the same females deposited mostclutches in previously unparasitized fruit. Parallel patternsin the frequency of female-female contests were observed, supportingthe notion that a fruit's value is determined by an interactionbetween fruit size or ripeness, on one hand, and the prior occurrenceof eggs, on the other. Laboratory assays suggested that useof existing sites had advantages in terms of time savings; femalebehavior thus constitutes a relatively uncommon example of adaptivesuperparasitism in which parasitized hosts are actually preferredover unparasitized ones.[Behav Ecol 7: 235-242 (1996)] 相似文献

Egg color variation, but not egg rejection behavior, changes in a cuckoo host breeding in the absence of brood parasitism 下载免费PDF全文
Interactions between parasitic cuckoos and their songbird hosts form a classical reciprocal “arms race,” and are an excellent model for understanding the process of coevolution. Changes in host egg coloration via the evolution of interclutch variation in egg color or intraclutch consistency in egg color are hypothesized counter adaptations that facilitate egg recognition and thus limit brood parasitism. Whether these antiparasitism strategies are maintained when the selective pressure of parasitism is relaxed remains debated. However, introduced species provide unique opportunities for testing the direction and extent of natural selection on phenotypic trait maintenance and variation. Here, we investigated egg rejection behavior and egg color polymorphism in the red‐billed leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea), a common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) host, in a population introduced to Hawaii 100 years ago (breeding without cuckoos) and a native population in China (breeding with cuckoos). We found that egg rejection ability was equally strong in both the native and the introduced populations, but levels of interclutch variation and intraclutch consistency in egg color in the native population were higher than in the introduced population. This suggests that egg rejection behavior in hosts can be maintained in the absence of brood parasitism and that egg appearance is maintained by natural selection as a counter adaptation to brood parasitism. This study provides rare evidence that host antiparasitism strategies can change under parasite‐relaxed conditions and reduced selection pressure. 相似文献

Recent investigations conducted on several tritrophic systems have demonstrated that egg parasitoids, when searching for host eggs, may exploit plant synomones that have been induced as a consequence of host oviposition. In this article we show that, in a system characterized by host eggs embedded in the plant tissue, naïve females of the egg parasitoid Anagrus breviphragma Soyka (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) responded in a Y‐tube olfactometer to volatiles from leaves of Carex riparia Curtis (Cyperaceae) containing eggs of one of its hosts, Cicadella viridis (L.) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). The wasp did not respond to host eggs or to clean leaves from non‐infested plants compared with clean air, whereas it showed a strong preference for the olfactometer arm containing volatiles of leaves with embedded host eggs, compared with the arm containing volatiles of leaves from a non‐infested plant or host eggs extracted from the plant. When the eggs were removed from an infested leaf, the parasitoid preference was observed only if eggs were added aside, suggesting a synergistic effect of a local plant synomone and an egg kairomone. The parasitoid also responded to clean leaves from an egg‐infested plant when compared with leaves from a non‐infested plant, indicating a systemic effect of volatile induction. 相似文献

In biological control programs, it should be possible to manipulate agents during host specificity trials so that they exhibit a lower host acceptance threshold. This would help to ensure that any non-target species that could be attacked in the field will also be attacked in the laboratory and flagged as potential hosts. The question is how to encourage agents to express the widest possible host range during trials. This study examined the effects of variation in parasitoid state (mating status, nutritional status, age, host experience) and the test environment (competition, arena size, presence of host-damaged leek leaves) on the degree of host exploitation by Diadromus pulchellus Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). As a first step, this study looked for changes in oviposition by the parasitoid on its normal host, the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Acrolepiidae). Each of the seven factors was tested independently to assess its effect on the number of parasitoid offspring produced and host mortality. Previous host experience led to a marginal increase, while competition led to a per-capita decrease, in the degree of host exploitation. In contrast, mating status, arena size and the presence of host-damaged leek leaves had no measurable effects. Finally, parasitoid age and nutritional status had strong effects in the opposite direction to predictions, with younger and sugar-fed individuals exhibiting higher host exploitation than older and sugar-starved parasitoids, respectively. This study suggests that a sound understanding of species-specific reproductive biology and parasitoid–host interactions is likely required before oviposition-enhancing parasitoid states can confidently be identified. 相似文献

Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli can normally only take up small peptides less than 650 Da, or five to six amino acids, in size. We have found that biotinylated peptides up to 31 amino acids in length can be taken up by E. coli and that uptake is dependent on the biotin transporter. Uptake could be competitively inhibited by free biotin or avidin and blocked by the protonophore carbonyl m-chlorophenylhydrazone and was abolished in E. coli mutants that lacked the biotin transporter. Biotinylated peptides could be used to supplement the growth of a biotin auxotroph, and the transported peptides were shown to be localized to the cytoplasm in cell fractionation experiments. The uptake of biotinylated peptides was also demonstrated for two other gram-negative bacteria, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This finding may make it possible to create new peptide antibiotics that can be used against gram-negative pathogens. Researchers have used various moieties to cause the illicit transport of compounds in bacteria, and this study demonstrates the illicit transport of the largest known compound to date. 相似文献

The expression of virulence during double infections by different parasites with conflicting host exploitation and transmission strategies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In many natural populations, hosts are found to be infected by more than one parasite species. When these parasites have different host exploitation strategies and transmission modes, a conflict among them may arise. Such a conflict may reduce the success of both parasites, but could work to the benefit of the host. For example, the less‐virulent parasite may protect the host against the more‐virulent competitor. We examine this conflict using the waterflea Daphnia magna and two of its sympatric parasites: the blood‐infecting bacterium Pasteuria ramosa that transmits horizontally and the intracellular microsporidium Octosporea bayeri that can concurrently transmit horizontally and vertically after infecting ovaries and fat tissues of the host. We quantified host and parasite fitness after exposing Daphnia to one or both parasites, both simultaneously and sequentially. Under conditions of strict horizontal transmission, Pasteuria competitively excluded Octosporea in both simultaneous and sequential double infections, regardless of the order of exposure. Host lifespan, host reproduction and parasite spore production in double infections resembled those of single infection by Pasteuria. When hosts became first vertically (transovarilly) infected with O. bayeri, Octosporea was able to withstand competition with P. ramosa to some degree, but both parasites produced less transmission stages than they did in single infections. At the same time, the host suffered from reduced fecundity and longevity. Our study demonstrates that even when competing parasite species utilize different host tissues to proliferate, double infections lead to the expression of higher virulence and ultimately may select for higher virulence. Furthermore, we found no evidence that the less‐virulent and vertically transmitting O. bayeri protects its host against the highly virulent P. ramosa. 相似文献

The influence of size-selective oviposition behaviour by parasitoids on the evolution of life-history timing in their hosts was examined using an optimization model of a two-stage life history similar to a genetic algorithm. Host populations with varying durations of early-larval development were subjected to selection in scenarios where parasitoids had fixed preferences for oviposition on late-stage larvae, or those where parasitoid attack was dependent on the relative frequencies of the two life stages present in the population. Fixed preference for oviposition on late-stage larvae caused positive directional selection on the duration of early-larval development. Surviving individuals remained for as long as possible in the first stage of development in order to avoid parasitoid attack. Frequency-dependent parasitoid attack, in contrast, caused maintenance of variation in the duration of early-larval development. The influence of the fitness payoffs of different life stages on the plasticity of size-selective oviposition behaviour is discussed, as are possible implications of the model results for parasitoid-host population dynamics. 相似文献

Oviparous animals have evolved multiple defenses to prevent microbes from penetrating their eggs and causing embryo mortality. In birds, egg constituents such as lysozyme and antibodies defend against microbial infestation, but eggshell pigments might also impact survival of bacteria. If so, microbes could exert an important selective pressure on the evolution of eggshell coloration. In a previous lab experiment, eggshell protoporphyrin caused drastic mortality in cultures of Gram positive, but not Gram negative, bacteria when exposed to light. Here, we test this “photodynamic antimicrobial hypothesis” in a field experiment. In a paired experimental design, we placed sanitized brown, protoporphyrin‐rich chicken eggs alongside white eggs that lack protoporphyrin. We deployed eggs for 48 hr without incubation, as can occur between laying and incubation, when microbial infection risk is highest. Eggs were placed on the open ground exposed to sunlight and in dark underground storm‐petrel burrows. We predicted that the proportion of Gram‐positive bacteria on brown eggs should be lower when exposed to sunlight than when kept in the dark, but we expected no such difference for white eggs. Although our data revealed variation in bacterial community composition, the proportion of Gram‐positive bacteria on eggshells did not vary by egg color, and there was no interaction between egg color and location. Instead, Gram‐positive bacteria were proportionally more common on eggs on the ground than eggs in burrows. Overall, our experiment did not support the photodynamic antimicrobial hypothesis. The diverse range of avian egg colors is generated by just two pigments, but over 10 hypotheses have been proposed for the evolution of eggshell color. If our results are generalizable, eggshell protoporphyrin might not play a substantial role in defending eggs against microbes, which narrows the field of candidate hypotheses for the evolution of avian eggshell coloration. 相似文献

A new spionid polychaete, Polydora robi, is described from intertidal and shallow subtidal areas in the Philippine Islands and Bali, Indonesia. Polydora robi belongs to the Polydora ciliata/ websteri species group and is characterized by a rounded prostomium, triangular occipital tentacle, needlelike posterior notosetae, and a pygidium with digitiform composite cirri surrounding the anus. Adults burrow into empty gastropod shells inhabited by hermit crabs. The burrows of the worms typically extend from an external opening in the apex of the shells to an opening in the central body whorls along the columella. The species was found to ingest the fertilized eggs and developing embryos attached to the pleopods of host hermit crabs. The occurrence of egg predation and the symbiotic relationship between polydorids and hermit crabs is discussed. Known egg predators of hermit crabs are reviewed. 相似文献

The theory of discrete time coevolution is applied to the problem of maintenance of genetic polymorphism with selfing hosts and haploid pathogens. It is shown that the usual simplifying assumption, discrete synchroized generations with no intraspecific frequency-dependent selection, precludes stability. This situation is not corrected by the incorporation of special features such as mutation, alternate hosts, partial outcrossing of the hosts, or genetic recombination in the pathogen population. 相似文献
