Tamarindus indica L. is an important multipurpose tree, indigenous to Africa, now introduced worldwide and known for its drought tolerance. The effects of drought on tamarinds, especially at seedling stage, are hardly investigated. However, this information is important for its conservation and domestication. In a growth chamber experiment we investigated the water relations of African tamarind seedlings under short-term soil drought stress. Initially tamarind seedlings can be considered as drought-tolerant at the expense of internal water storage reserves as they keep on transpiring (sap flow) and growing (diameter fluctuations). They finally spent 20% of their stem and root water storage reserves and experienced stem water potentials near − 3 MPa. Therefore, they can be classified as anisohydric. Their risk-taking behavior led to a high rate of seedling mortality (50%) because of whole plant hydraulic failure. They were not hydraulically efficient and they possessed low water storage capacity in stem and root (45%) due to high tissue density. When re-irrigated, remaining seedlings recovered slowly as a consequence of non-stomatal limitations and partial shoot dieback. Although tamarind seedlings show traits related to drought tolerance, we suggest that the species contains some water saving mechanisms. Contrasts with the co-occurring water-conserving tree species baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) are also discussed.  相似文献

Indigenous fruit tree species such as tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) in African sub‐Saharan traditionally act to build resilience into the farming system in terms of food security, income generation and ecosystem stability. Therefore, increasing our knowledge on their ecology and distribution is a priority. Tamarind is mainly grown for the fruits but is also a valuable timber species. The fruit pulp has a high content of vitamin B and is eaten fresh or made into jam, chutney, juice or sweets. Flowers, leaves and seeds are also edible and used in a variety of dishes. The main objective of this study is to evaluate actual density of tamarind in Senegal and the climate change effects on its distribution for better conservation strategies. Tamarind's distribution and density around villages were recorded and modelled in different agro‐ecological zones in Senegal using transect method and under current and future climates. Distribution under two future climate scenarios were modelled using four climate models and three time slices (2020, 2050 and 2080). Results show a decreasing gradient in tree density (from 7 to 1 trees km?2) from the Sudano agro‐ecological zone (in the south) to the Sahel (in the north). Future climate predictions show that although tamarind distribution will increase in the north‐west and south of the country in 2020; by 2050, the area identified as suitable for its growth will be greatly reduced. Areas in the north‐west basin appear to be an important refugia for the species under future climate conditions. However, density around villages in this area was found to be relatively low indicating that this could lead to problems of poor connectivity and inbreeding depression. This region should therefore be highlighted as important conservative management and protection strategies of tamarind in this region.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of polyphenols extracted from the tamarind seed coat (PETSC) on glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, red blood cell parameters and bilirubin in heat-stressed broilers. One hundred forty-seven broilers, 18-days old were divided into two groups. In group 1, broilers were maintained at an environmental temperature of 26?±?2 °C throughout the experimental period. In group 2, the broilers were maintained at 38?±?2 °C (cyclic temperature: 26?±?2 °C; ?38?±?2 °C; and ?26?±?2 °C, and broilers were maintained at 38?±?2 °C for 6 h/ day) and received PETSC at a concentration of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 mg/kg in their diet ad libitum. Parameters were investigated on days 1, 7, 14 and 21 of the experimental period. Results showed that GPx activity of heat-stressed broilers that received 100 mg/kg of PETSC in their diet was lower (P?<?0.05) than that in broilers fed the other concentrations. The mean total red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration of heat-stressed broilers that received 100 mg/kg PETSC was higher (P?<?0.05) than those in broilers in group 1 and those fed the other concentrations. The mean bilirubin level in the excreta of heat-stressed broilers that received 100 mg/kg of PETSC was lower (P?<?0.05) than that in broilers that received 0, 300, 400 and 500 mg/kg of PETSC. This showed that PETSC could reduce GPx activity and bilirubin in feces, and increase red blood cell parameters in heat-stressed broilers.  相似文献

Optimal culture conditions for high frequency plant regeneration from excised cotyledons of Tamarindus indica were established. Maximum shoot bud differentiation (100%) occurred when the adaxial surface of the entire cotyledon (excised from 12-d old seedlings) was in contact with MS medium containing 5×10–6M BAP. On MS alone only roots were formed. Shoot or root formation was confined to nodal tissue at the top of the notch present on the adaxial surface at the proximal end of the cotyledon. Thirty-four to 95 shoots were regenerated in a 4 month period from individual cotyledons. Shoots were rooted on MS with 5.7×10–6M IAA. IAA (5.7×10–7M) alone induced complete plant formation. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory effects of cranberry juice on pathogenic microorganisms. The microorganisms analyzed were Escherichia coli from patients with urinary infections, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The disc method was used to determine the sensitivity of bacteria to cranberry juice (CJ, both concentrated and diluted). A lawn of 10(6) cfu/ml was grown on agar surfaces in Petri dishes and on Whatman discs that had been previously saturated with CJ and CJ : water 1 : 1 to 1 : 50 juice solutions had been placed on the discs, which were cultured and incubated. The results indicated that S. aureus was more susceptible to cranberry juice inhibition than the other microorganisms. L. monocytogenes was the most resistant to the inhibitory action of cranberry juice, showing a significant difference from the inhibition of P. aeruginosa, uropathogenic E. coli, Salmonella spp., and S. aureus. This study also demonstrated that the inhibitory activity of cranberry juice for E. coli took place up to a dilution of 1 : 20.  相似文献

Summary Ag-NOR staining and a counterstain enhanced fluorescence technique (chromomycin A3/distamycin A/DAPI-staining = CDD-method) and G-banding, respectively, have been applied to the zebu (Bos indicus L.) chromosomes. The nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were found in the telomeric regions of chromosomes nos. 2, 3, 4, 11, and 28. CDD staining led to a well-defined R-banding pattern along the chromosome arms and to the visualization of centric heterochromatic bands of variable sizes.  相似文献

The biological activity of venom from Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was examined in vivo toward larvae and pupae of Galleriae mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and in vitro toward bacterial and fungal cultures, as well as cultured insect cells. Pupae of G. mellonella were far more susceptible to the venom than larvae. At low doses of venom [0.1 venom reservoir equivalents (VRE)], pupal abdominal mobility was inhibited within 30 min, and by 24 h, all pupae injected with venom concentrations >0.5 VRE were completely paralyzed. These same doses of venom resulted in an inhibition of adult emergence. Host larvae were far less sensitive to wasp venom as evidenced by all venom injected larvae remaining responsive to mechanical stimulation by 1 h post injection, even at concentrations equivalent to 1 venom reservoir. Eventually (>2 h at 25 degrees C), venom-injected larvae became immobile, then flaccid, and all died within 24 h post-injection. At lower concentrations of wasp venom, the onset of paralysis was delayed by comparison to that evoked by 1 VRE, and few host larvae were able to pupate. Development of host larvae to adult emergence was also reduced in a dose-dependent manner, with eclosion completely prevented at high concentrations (>0.5 VRE) of venom. Venom doses <0.5 VRE did not appear to induce paralysis or alter larval development. When venom was incubated with bacterial or fungal cultures, no antimicrobial activity was detected. However, wasp venom was found to be cytotoxic and cytolytic to cultured cells derived from the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culcidae). Though both cell types displayed similar susceptibility in terms of LC50s, the lepidopteran cells responded much more rapidly with regard to the onset of morphological changes and the timing of cell death. Experiments were conducted during the 1974–75 and 1975–76winter season with the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivarJyoti. From amongst the various plant parts, the flag leaf bladehad higher in vivo nitrate reductase (NR) activity than thelower two leaf blades, glumes, and grains. However, the potentialof a plant part to reduce NO3 is a function of its freshweight and the NR per unit fresh weight. On this basis, thesecond and third leaf blades could reduce more NO3 thanthe flag leaf blade. N fertilizer application resulted in enhancementof the activity of the leaf blades alone. N fertilizer appliedduring the reproductive phase was taken up and assimilated bythe various plant parts. The studies suggest that, even whenthe fertilizer is applied at optimum levels for obtaining maximumyields, the upper leaf blades have sub-optimal NR activity andthat there is a likelihood of either a preferential flow ofNO3 to the leaf blades or transnational barriers to NO3movement to the ear.  相似文献

CM-proteins from barley endosperm (CMa, CMb, CMc, CMd), which are the main components of the A-hordein fraction, are synthesized most actively 10 to 30 d after anthesis (maximum at 15–20 d). They are synthesized by membranebound polysomes as precursors of higher apparent molecular weight (13,000–21,000) than the mature proteins (12,000–16,000). The largest in vitro product (21,000) is the putative precursor of protein CMd (16,000), as it is selected with anti-CMd monospecific IgG's, and is coded by an mRNA of greater sedimentation coefficient (9 S) than those encoding the other three proteins (7.5 S). CM-proteins always appear in the soluble fraction, following different homogenization and subcellular fractionation procedures, indicating that these proteins are transferred to the soluble fraction after processing.  相似文献

The effect of an in vivo and in vitro treatment with cadmium on transport activities of root plasma membrane enriched vesicles was studied in oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Argentina) plants. Addition of 100 mumol/L CdSO4 to nutrient solution decreases both proton transport activity and ATPase activity to the same level. In vitro experiments show that cadmium seems to have a differential inhibiting effect on proton transport activity and ATPase activity, the most pronounced one on ATP-dependent H(+)-accumulation, suggesting that cadmium would interfere with membrane permeability properties. This is indeed the case. The results demonstrate that cadmium decreases passive permeability to protons.  相似文献

The leishmanicidal activity of four batches of meglumine antimoniate, produced in Farmanguinhos-Fiocruz, Brazil (TAMs), was assessed and compared to Glucantime(R)-Aventis Pharma Ltda. Using the amastigote-like in vitro model, the active concentrations of Sb v varied from 10microg/ml to 300 microg/ml for L. (L.) chagasi and from 50microg/ml to 300microg/ml for L. (L.) amazonensis, with no statistically significant differences among the four batches of TAMs and Glucantime(R). The inhibitory concentrations (IC50) determined by the amastigote-infected macrophage model for TAM01/03 and Glucantime(R) were, respectively: 26.3microg/ml and 127.6microg/ml for L. chagasi, 15.4microg /ml and 22.9microg/ml for L. amazonensis, and 12.1microg/ml and 24.2microg/ml for L. (V.) braziliensis. The activities of the four batches of TAMs were confirmed in an in vivo model by assessing, during eight weeks skin lesions caused by L. braziliensis in hamster that were treated with 20mg Sb v/Kg/day for 30 consecutive days. The meglumine antimoniate produced by Farmanguinhos was as effective as the reference drug, Glucantime(R)-Aventis, against three species of Leishmania that are of medical importance in Brazil.  相似文献

The methanolic extract of the aerial part of Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam. (Rubiaceae) was screened for antioxidant activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl (DPPH) quenching assay, 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) cation decolorization test, ferric reducing power (FRP), scavenging capacity towards hydroxyl ion (OH*) radicals and nitric oxide (NO) radical inhibition activity using established assay procedures. Total phenolics and total flavonoid contents were, also determined. The plant yielded 210 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g phenolic content and 55 mg quercetin equivalent/100 g flavonoid content. The extract exhibited high antiradical activity against DPPH, ABTS, nitric oxide and hydroxyl radicals with EC50 value of 82, 150, 130, and 170 microg/ml, respectively. The FRP increased with increasing concentration of the sample. The antioxidant activity of the extract was comparable with that of the standard butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). High correlation between total phenolic/flavonoid contents and scavenging potential of different reactive oxygen species (R2 = 0.785-0.998) indicated the polyphenols as the main antioxidants.  相似文献

Quercus species are group of plants known as oak which represent important genus of Fagaceae family. These species are widely distributed in Mediterranean countries. Many of those species used in traditional medicine to treat and prevent various human disorders such as diabetes. Exhausted extraction for Quercus coccifera leaves were carried out using n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, boiled water and microwaved water. Extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening, acute toxicity study, and in vitro and in vivo animal model to evaluate antidiabetic activity of the produced extracts. The highest in vitro activity against α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity was obtained from methanolic extract with an IC50 of 0.17 and 0.38 µg/ml respectively and better than the positive control acarbose. While the rest of the extract was either with moderate or low activity. Similarly, in the in vivo study, methanolic extract with a concentration of 200 mg/kg/day was able to reduce the blood glucose level for the diabetic mice to 146.8 mg/dL with normal bodyweight and biochemical signs when compared to the normal mice group. While the rest of the extracts were either with moderate or low ability to maintain blood glucose level for diabetic mice with few signs of hepatic and renal toxicity and weight loss. All data were statistically significantly different with p-value of less than 0.001 at confidence interval of 95% with high variance homogeneity. In conclusion, methanolic plant leaves extract of Q. coccifera can possibly be used alone to control the elevation of blood glucose level with a renal and hepatic protective property.  相似文献

dd(+)-Galactosamine is a well-known experimental hepatotoxin. The present study was conducted to determine the protective role of a 43-kD protein isolated from the leaves of the herb Cajanus indicus L against D(+)-galactosamine (GalN) induced liver damage in mice. Both preventive and curative effects of the protein have been investigated in the study. The protein was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight for 4 days before and after GalN intoxication at a dose of 800 mg/kg body weight for 3 days. The increased activities of serum marker enzymes, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase because of GalN administration, were significantly reduced by the protein treatment. The protein also normalized the altered activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione-S-transferase as well as the levels of cellular metabolites, reduced glutathione, glutathione disulfide, and total thiols. In addition, the enhanced hepatic lipid peroxidation because of GalN intoxication was also effectively inhibited by the protein treatment. Results suggest that GalN caused hepatic damages via oxidative insult and that the protein provided protection through its antioxidant mechanism.  相似文献

Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the main cause of highly disfiguring mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) in South America. The related species L. (V.) peruviana has only been identified in simple cutaneous lesions (CL). Hybrids between L. braziliensis and L. peruviana have been reported although genetic exchange in Leishmania is considered to be rare. Here we compared growth in vitro, adaptive capacity under thermal and oxidative stress and behaviour in a hamster model, of L. braziliensis, L. peruviana, and their putative hybrids. At 24°C, the optimal temperature for in vitro growth, L. braziliensis had the highest growth rate. In in vitro studies hybrid clones presented heterogeneous phenotypes, from slower growth rates, similar to L. peruviana, to higher growth rates, as observed in L. braziliensis. Hamsters infected with hybrid strains, presented the highest parasite densities and aggressive relapses at a later stage of infection. Hybrids generally presented higher plasticity and phenotypic diversity than the putative parental species, with potential eco-epidemiological implications, including an impact on the success of disease control.  相似文献
