SYNOPSIS. The sporogonic cycles of Plasmodium schwetzi, P. vivax and P. ovale are distinctly different with regard to rate of sporozoite development and median oocyst diameter. Differences in the oocyst structure, particularly with regard to the presence of inclusions in those of P. schwetzi , were noted. These findings tend to support the continued designation of these parasites as distinct and separate species.  相似文献

Salient features of microanatomy of Pyramimonas tetrarhynchus , type species of the genus, are described and illustrated. The species is shown to possess a flagellar scale reservoir comparable to that previously described for a marine species (P. amylifera) though somewhat simpler. The body scales are shown to arise directly from Golgi eisternae as in P. amylifera. Other features discussed include the flagellar roots and certain aspects of the mode of liberation of scales to the exterior. Participation by endoplasmic reticulum in the latter process is shown to be probable but there is no precise explanation forthcoming for the elaborate scale arrangement encountered both on the flagella and on the cell. Participation by cytoplasmic tubules is nevertheless effectively excluded for the latter.  相似文献

Well-preserved specimens of Stauropteris oldhamia are described. The material was collected in the early 1920s from the Lower Westphalian (Early Pennsylvanian) Saurue seam from Belgium. The fossil plants occur as permineralized axes fragments within a coal ball. This study confirms most of the interpretations made by previous researchers. The observation of immature axis however suggests a less regular organization than previously interpreted beyond the three first branching orders. We also highlight the presence of profusely and dichotomously branched aphlebiae, the lack of laminate organs as well as the presence of hypodermal aerenchyma in all plant parts. We interpret these features as part of a very specialized assimilatory apparatus indicating an adaptation to a humid swamp environment.  相似文献

Pteropus livingstonii (Gray 1866) is a highly endangered fruit bat of the Comoro Islands (Western Indian Ocean). Limited information on the bats' population biology is hampering conservation measures. During an expedition in 1992, observations were made on the timing of reproduction of P. livingstonii and the congeneric P. seychellensis comorensis (Nicoll, 1908): P. livingstonii breeds two months earlier than P. s. comorensis . These observations are discussed in relation to what is known about reproduction in Pteropus , and past observations on the Comorien Pteropus species.  相似文献

The bisulfite reductase (P582) from Desulfotomaculum nigrificans was purified to homogeneity as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. By colorimetric methods of analysis, the products of bisulfite reduction by this enzyme were determined to be trithionate, thiosulfate, and sulfide. Of these, trithionate was consistently found to be the major product, whereas the latter two were formed in lesser quantities. When [(35)S]bisulfite was incorporated as substrate, no labeled sulfide was detected. Furthermore, when trithionate and thiosulfate were isolated from reaction mixtures and chemically degraded, (35)S was found in all three sulfur atoms of trithionate; however, only the inner sulfur atom of thiosulfate was radioactive. From these data we conclude that the bisulfite reductase of D. nigrificans reduces bisulfite to trithionate and that thiosulfate and sulfide are endogenous side products of the reaction.  相似文献

Human prorenin is the biosynthetic precursor of renin. In general, prorenin is enzymatically inactive until it is converted to renin. The kidney is the major source of renin in the circulation, and is also an important source of circulating prorenin. The mechanisms of prorenin sorting and processing to renin in the juxtaglomerular cell may be a determinant of renal renin production. Therefore, our studies have focused on renal enzymes involved in "limited proteolysis" of prorenin to renin and on the morphology of prorenin sorting in the human juxtaglomerular cell.  相似文献

Epitestosterone, a 17 alpha-epimer of testosterone is a normal constituent of body fluids in many species including man. It has long been believed that it is devoid of any biological significance. However, it is now demonstrated that in in vivo experiments on castrated male mice it counteracts the action of testosterone on androgen-dependent organs. In vitro experiments show that on the overall antiandrogenicity of epitestosterone participate true antiandrogenic action due to the binding to androgen receptors, strong 5 alpha-reductase inhibiting activity as well as a weak antigonadotropic activity. Epitestosterone is devoid of any embryotoxicity as checked by chick embryo-toxicity screening test.  相似文献

About half the nurseries and glasshouses in the Lea Valley of Hertfordshire were found to be infested with either or both Pratylenchus vulnus and Xiphinema diversicaudatum. The latter nematode probably occurred naturally in the soil on which the glasshouses were built but P. vulnus is thought to have been imported with rose rootstocks and is not known to occur outdoors in Britain. Both nematode species can cause decline of roses and even small numbers seem harmful. Numbers of P. vulnus can increase greatly, especially on rootstocks of Rosa canina, although numbers were often smaller when roses were severely damaged than on healthier crops. Numbers of X. diversicaudatum increased more slowly and R. canina was a better host for it than R. chinensis. X. diversicaudatum seemed to respond less quickly than P. vulnus to reduced host-plant vigour. The two rootstocks exhibited different host-status for the two species of nematode and cuttings of various rose cultivars showed different host-status to P. thornei, another species of lesion nematode which is not known to be pathogenic to roses. Two applications of dibromochloropropane liquid at the rate of 70 l/ha in a large volume of water maintained nematode densities at an acceptably low level, and growers who adopted this treatment as a supplement to pre-planting steam sterilisation and/or DD (dichloro-propane: dichloropropene) prolonged the productive life of their crops for several years.  相似文献
