Behavioral differences exist among populations of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes, Hominoidea) across Africa. Deciding if these are cross-cultural differences demands careful interpretation and rigorous scrutiny. Even standard patterns like social grooming may show variation in detail between neighboring populations. Some patterns of tool use, such as using hammers to crack nuts, also vary across far western Africa. At least 37 populations of free-ranging chimpanzees show tool use, and 14 show at least one habitual pattern of tool use. Regional differences exist among the three subspecies or geographical races of chimpanzees. Convincing empirical demonstration of social customs and traditions in non-human species is problematical, and even something so simple in principle as innovation is hard to show in practice. However, culture need not depend on imitation, teaching, or language, either in humans or in other species.  相似文献

In an effort to understand the forces shaping evolution of regulatory genes and patterns, we have compared data on interspecific differences in enzyme expression patterns among the rapidly evolving Hawaiian picture-winged Drosophila to similar data on the more conservative virilis species group. Divergence of regulatory patterns is significantly more common in the former group, but cause and effect are difficult to discern. Random fixation of regulatory variants in small populations and/or during speciation may be somewhat more likely than divergence driven by selection. Within the picture-winged group, we also have compared enzymes that fulfill different metabolic roles. There are highly significant differences between individual enzymes, but no obvious correlations to functional categories. Correspondence to: W.J. Dickinson  相似文献

Succession of microfungal assemblages in decomposing peatland plants   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We investigated the microfungal assemblages in the decomposing tissues of dominant plant species in two peatlands in southern boreal Alberta, Canada, to determine if distinct patterns of succession of microfungi occurred throughout the first two years of decomposition. These plant species were Sphagnum fuscum from a bog and Carex aquatilis leaves and rhizomes and Salix planifolia leaves and roots from a riverine, sedge-dominated fen. Canonical correspondence analyses, a multivariate statistical analysis used infrequently in mycological research, revealed distinct patterns of fungal species succession in two of the five litters (S. fuscum and C. aquatilis leaves). Furthermore, our analyses showed that substantially different microfungal assemblages were associated with these litters within the first two years of decomposition. Litter quality variables, such as total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total carbon tissue nutrient concentrations, explained most of the succession patterns and differences in the microfungal assemblages of these five litters. Our data did not reveal the classical taxonomic zygomycete – ascomycete/fungi imperfecti – basidiomycete pattern of succession during organic matter decomposition. Similarly, a succession of functional groups of microfungi, i.e., cellulose-degraders preceding lignin-degraders, generally was not apparent. Instead, microfungi with broad spectra of enzymatic abilities co-existed over the first two years of decomposition in these peatland plant litters. These microfungi have a limited ability to decompose complex phenolic polymers, such as lignin, resulting in the accumulation of peat in these ecosystems. Some microfungal taxa were not affected by changes in litter quality, environmental variables, or surface water chemistry and were present at all stages of decomposition.  相似文献

Bristles on the notum of many cyclorraphous flies are arranged into species-specific stereotyped patterns. Differences in the spatial expression of the proneural gene scute correlate with the positions of bristles in those species looked at so far. However, the examination of a number of genes encoding trans-regulatory factors, such as pannier, stripe, u-shaped, caupolican and wingless, indicates that they are expressed in conserved domains on the prospective notum. This suggests that the function of a trans-regulatory network of genes is relatively unchanged in derived Diptera, and that many differences are likely to be due to changes in cis-regulatory sequences of scute. In contrast, in Anopheles gambiae, a basal species with no stereotyped bristle pattern, the expression patterns of pannier and wingless are not conserved, and expression of AgASH, the Anopheles proneural gene, does not correlate in a similar manner with the bristle pattern. We discuss the possibility that independently acting cis-regulatory sequences at the scute locus may have arisen in the lineage giving rise to cyclorraphous flies.  相似文献

Summary A two year comparative field water relations study was conducted in central Maryland on three sympatric temperate lianas, Lonicera japonica, Vitis vulpina and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Seasonal physiological activity was longer by approximately 9 weeks in the evergreen L. japonica, while peak rates of stem elongation were 4–10 fold higher in the two deciduous species. There were marked differences in vascular anatomy and water use patterns among the three species, however all three evidenced varying degrees of stomatal closure in response to decreasing soil water availability and increasing atmospheric evaporative demand. The range of leaf water potentials measured in these species was quite narrow in comparison to other temperate woody species. Two of the species showed no alterations in their tissue water release properties in response to decreased soil water availability, while V. vulpina showed a limited capacity in this regard. Most significant among the species differences in water relations were the conservative water use patterns of P. quinquefolia, and the midday maxima of transpirational water loss measured in L. japonica compared to the morning peaks in traspiration for the two deciduous species. The differences found in anatomy, leaf phenology, climbing mechanics, water relations and canopy development among these three sympatric vines implies a spatial and temporal partitioning of light and water resources and emphasizes the diversity of morphological-physiological suites of characters present among species co-occurring in the same macrohabitat.  相似文献

Beetle horns represent an evolutionary novelty exhibiting remarkable diversity above and below the species level. Here, we show that four typical appendage patterning genes, extradenticle (exd), homothorax (hth), dachshund (dac), and Distal-less (Dll) are expressed in the context of the development of sexually dimorphic thoracic horns in three Onthophagus species. At least two of these genes, Dll and hth, exhibited expression patterns consistent with a conservation of patterning function during horn development relative to their known roles in the development of insect legs. exd, hth, and dac expression patterns during horn development were largely invariable across species or sexes within species. In contrast, Dll expression was far more discrete and exhibited consistent differences between sexes and species. Most importantly, differences in location and domain size of Dll expression tightly correlated with the degree to which prepupal horn primordia were retained or resorbed before the final adult molt. Our results lend further support to the hypothesis that the origin of beetle horns relied, at least in part, on the redeployment of already existing developmental mechanisms, such as appendage patterning processes and that changes in the exact location and domain size of Dll expression may represent important modifier mechanisms that modulate horn expression in different species or sexes. If correct, this would imply that certain components of genetic basis of horn development may be able to diversify rapidly within lineages and largely independent of phylogenetic distance. We present a first model that integrates presently available data on the genetic regulation of horn development and diversity.  相似文献

Cloned animals often suffer from loss of development to term and abnormalities, typically classified under the umbrella term of Large Offspring Syndrome (LOS). Cattle are an interesting species to study because of the relatively greater success rate of nuclear transfer in this species compared with all species cloned to date. The imprinted insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF2R; mannose-6-phosphate) gene was chosen to investigate aspects of fetal growth and development in cloned cattle in the present study. IGF2R gene expression patterns in identical genetic clones of several age groups were assessed in day 25, day 45, and day 75 fetuses as well as spontaneously aborted fetuses, calves that died shortly after birth and healthy cloned calves using single stranded conformational polymorphism gel electrophoresis. A variable pattern of IGF2R allelic expression in major organs such as the brain, cotyledon, heart, liver, lung, spleen, kidney and intercotyledon was observed using a G/A transition in the 3’UTR of IGF2R. IGF2R gene expression was also assessed by real time RT-PCR and found to be highly variable among the clone groups. Proper IGF2R gene expression is necessary for survival to term, but is most likely not a cause of early fetal lethality or an indicator of postnatal fitness. Contrary to previous reports of the transmission of imprinting patterns from somatic donor cells to cloned animals within organs in the same cloned animal the paternal allele of IGF2R can be imprinted in one tissue while the maternal allele is imprinted in another tissue. This observation has never been reported in any species in which imprinting has been studied.  相似文献

Summary Total proteins were extracted from degermed seeds of various species of Triticum and Aegilops with solutions containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and mercaptoethanol. The reduced, dissociated proteins were fractionated according to molecular weight (MW) by high-resolution polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in buffers containing SDS (SDS-PAGE). Stained SDS-PAGE patterns were measured by densitometric scanning over a suitable range of optical density. The data were normalized to equivalent total areas for each of the densitometric scans by means of a computer program that also permitted the construction of patterns of hypothetical amphiploids by averaging patterns of two or three diploid species. The grain proteins of most species examined had distinctive qualitative and quantitative aspects that were characteristic of the species even though nearly every accession or cultivar of a species exhibited at least minor differences in pattern from other accessions or cultivars. The main protein components (probably prolamins) of Triticum monococcum ssp. monococcum, T. monococcum ssp. boeoticum, T. urartu, and Aegilops squarrosa had MW's in the range 29–36 X 103 whereas the most important components of Ae. speltoides, Ae. longissima, and Ae. searsii had MW's in the range 37–55 × 103. Changes in the quantitative expression of particular genes, especially those coding for storage protein components, may have been associated with speciation. The strong predominance of proteins with MW's in the range 29–36 × 103 in some accessions of AB genome tetraploids, such as T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, may indicate contributions to the B genome of these tetraploids by T. monococcum ssp. boeoticum, T. urartu, or Ae. squarrosa.  相似文献

Bristles on the notum of many cyclorraphous flies are arranged into species-specific stereotyped patterns. The positions of bristles correlate with differences in the spatial expression of the scute (sc) gene in those species examined so far. However, a major upstream activator of scute, Pannier (Pnr), is expressed in a conserved domain over the entire medial notum. Here we examine the expression patterns in Calliphora vicina of stripe (sr), u-shaped (ush), caupolican (caup) and wingless (wg), genes known to modify the activity of Pnr or to act downstream of Pnr in Drosophila. We find that, with minor differences, their expression patterns are conserved. This suggests that the function of a trans-regulatory network of genes is relatively unchanged in derived Diptera and that many differences are likely to be due to changes in cis-regulatory sequences of scute.  相似文献

We examined the Canton-S strain of Drosophila melanogaster for electrophoretic variation of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. The pattern of bands obtained (stained with acetylthiocholine) depended on age, sex, and tissue (i.e., head vs. body part and hemolymph). However, through mixing experiments, it was concluded that most of these apparent differences were due to modification of the enzyme by unknown substances located in the fly's body. The electrophoretic pattern of head acetylcholinesterase was altered so that it became characteristic of the body which was present during extraction. For example, when heads of D. melanogaster were homogenized in an extract from D. lebanonensis bodies, the characteristic AChse bands of melanogaster were absent and instead the bands of lebanonensis were found. it was found that extraction of adult heads in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer alone or with a 2-min exposure to 1 mg/ml trypsin at 20 C gave the most reproducible results, independent of age and sex. Using these conditions, 25 strains of D. melanogaster and 30 strains of D. pseudoobscura were examined without finding any reproducible electrophoretic variant of acetylcholinesterase. In addition, 53 strains from 39 other Drosophila species produced a total of only six electrophoretic forms of the head enzyme. Additional electromorphs were found when whole flies were used, but these were not studied in detail because of the possibility that they could be due to postextraction modification. This study was supported by the National Research Council of Canada, Grant No. A0629 and A0235.  相似文献

The engrailed expression in embryos of a beetle, four midges and a fly has been analysed with special reference to the terminal regions. In all six species the segmental expression pattern is very similar but variability occurs in the clypeolabrum, foregut and hindgut. In some cases, segmental engrailed expression seems to be extended into the hind- and/or foregut. The engrailed expression of these species is compared with published data from other insects. An mRNA differential display (DD) analysis during rooting in grape cuttings was carried out to determine whether gene expression patterns differed under in vitro and ex vitro conditions. The four tissue samples for differential display and subsequent Northern hybridization analyses included control stem tissue from in vitro and ex vitro sources, microcuttings planted in MS based in vitro rooting medium and softwood cuttings planted in ex vitro soil medium, both collected 48 h after planting. DD autoradiographs showed gross similarity in banding pattern between in vitro and ex vitro stem tissue, whether constitutive or induced. Northern blot analysis of a few bands that appeared to be differentials did not indicate them as true positives. The results suggested that gene expression pattern during physiological processes such as rooting may be identical under in vitro and ex vitro conditions.  相似文献

The size-sex relationship and sexual differences of sixArisaema species native to Japan were investigated. The size-sex relationship showed almost the same pattern in all species. When the plant was small in size, the sex expression was male, and sex expression changed from male to female as the plant grew larger. Male ratios decreased rapidly around a critical size, but this critical size differed from one species to another. Sexual differences were detected in reproductive structures and behavior, although no difference was detected in vegetative structures. The stoutness, longevity and inner tissue of the scape showed remarkable differences between males and females, and this difference was represented most clearly as the size-weight relationship. Earlier initiation of flowering in males was also observed. No difference was found in resource allocation to reproductive structures between male and female plants at the flowering stage. However, a broad variation in the amount of resource allocation to reproductive structures was found at the fruiting stage in female individuals, which was attributed to differences in the setting rate of mature fruits.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of a 160-bp tandem satellite array, originally described from Microtus chrotorrhinus and called MSAT-160, was examined in related species of arvicolid rodents by sequence analyses, quantitative dot blotting, and Southern blotting. Results indicate that MSAT-160 is present in 12 of the 20 species and subspecies of Microtus assayed, but not in species belonging to any of the eight other genera examined. DNA from each species containing MSAT-160 was digested with 12 restriction endonucleases and restriction patterns were obtained reflecting the variable extent of homogenization of any given variant in different species. For example, with MboI digestion, M. chrotorrhinus produced a type A ladder pattern where most monomers contain the restriction site, M. ochrogaster generated a type B pattern where most monomers lack the site, and M. agrestis yielded a pattern intermediate between the A and B types. Further, dot blotting revealed copy-number differences between species. These findings indicate that changes in the periodic structure and amount of satellite DNA have occured since these species last shared a common ancestor. In addition, various species-pacific patterns were documented, illustrating that mechanism other than genomewide homogenization, such as stochastic mutation, out-of-register crossing over, deletion, and random amplification also play a role in structuring tandem arrays. Stochastic mutation and homogenization rates in satellite DNA, levels of species diversity, and magnitudes of chromosomal divergence differ significantly in Microtus, Mus, and Ctenomys, the three rodent lineages examined.  相似文献

Interspecific differences in the tissue-specific patterns of expression displayed by the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) genes within the Hawaiian picture-winged Drosophila represent a rich source of evolutionary variation in gene regulation. Study of the cis-acting elements responsible for regulatory differences between Adh genes from various species is greatly facilitated by analyzing the behavior of the different Adh genes in a homogeneous background. Accordingly, the Adh gene from Drosophila grimshawi was introduced into the germ line of Drosophila melanogaster by means of P element-mediated transformation, and transformants carrying this gene were compared to transformants carrying the Adh genes from Drosophila affinidisjuncta and Drosophila hawaiiensis. The results indicate that the D. affinidisjuncta and D. grimshawi genes have relatively higher levels of expression and broader tissue distribution of expression than the D. hawaiiensis gene in larvae. All three genes are expressed at similar overall levels in adults, with differences in tissue distribution of enzyme activity corresponding to the pattern in the donor species. However, certain systematic differences between Adh gene expression in transformants and in the Hawaiian Drosophila are noted along with tissue-specific position effects in some cases. The implications of these findings for the understanding of evolved regulatory variation are discussed.  相似文献

Scarce bibliographical data exists on the enzymes in Lepidosiren paradoxa and analysis of several enzymes was considered worthy of investigation. Distribution of ADH, ALP, FBALD, GAPDH, G3PDH, G6PDH, GPI, LDH, MDH, and PGM was identified in ten tissues (retina, heart, muscle, liver, kidney, lung, gut, gills, brain, and ovary) of the South American lungfish and compared with patterns previously described in other vertebrates. Compared with earlier results differences in the number of loci expressed were observed for ADH, G3PDH, GPI, and MDH. The number of loci expressed and/or in tissue specificity of several enzymes (ADH, FBALD, GAPDH, G3PDH, G6PDH and PGM) were found to be similar to those of other vertebrates. Differences were detected in ALP due to the absence of an intestinal-specific form typical of fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds; further differences were observed in GPI and MDH due to their tissue expression. The differences in LDH involve the LDH-A4 isozyme which was most common in tissues. Overall, comparison with other vertebrates reveals that in L. paradoxa the tissue-restricted expressions of some enzymes are similar, while others have retained an ancestral pattern and exhibit a more widespread tissue expression of genes.  相似文献
