When subjects direct attention to a particular location in a visual scene, responses in the visual cortex to stimuli presented at that location are enhanced, and the suppressive influences of nearby distractors are reduced. What is the top-down signal that modulates the response to an attended versus an unattended stimulus? Here, we demonstrate increased activity related to attention in the absence of visual stimulation in extrastriate cortex when subjects covertly directed attention to a peripheral location expecting the onset of visual stimuli. Frontal and parietal areas showed a stronger signal increase during this expectation than did visual areas. The increased activity in visual cortex in the absence of visual stimulation may reflect a top-down bias of neural signals in favor of the attended location, which derives from a fronto-parietal network.  相似文献

Contour integration is an important intermediate stage of object recognition, in which line segments belonging to an object boundary are perceptually linked and segmented from complex backgrounds. Contextual influences observed in primary visual cortex (V1) suggest the involvement of V1 in contour integration. Here, we provide direct evidence that, in monkeys performing a contour detection task, there was a close correlation between the responses of V1 neurons and the perceptual saliency of contours. Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that single neuronal responses encode the presence or absence of a contour as reliably as the animal's behavioral responses. We also show that the same visual contours elicited significantly weaker neuronal responses when they were not detected in the detection task, or when they were unattended. Our results demonstrate that contextual interactions in V1 play a pivotal role in contour integration and saliency.  相似文献

Chaos and synchrony in a model of a hypercolumn in visual cortex   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Neurons in cortical slices emit spikes or bursts of spikes regularly in response to a suprathreshold current injection. This behavior is in marked contrast to the behavior of cortical neurons in vivo, whose response to electrical or sensory input displays a strong degree of irregularity. Correlation measurements show a significant degree of synchrony in the temporal fluctuations of neuronal activities in cortex. We explore the hypothesis that these phenomena are the result of the synchronized chaos generated by the deterministic dynamics of local cortical networks. A model of a hypercolumn in the visual cortex is studied. It consists of two populations of neurons, one inhibitory and one excitatory. The dynamics of the neurons is based on a Hodgkin-Huxley type model of excitable voltage-clamped cells with several cellular and synaptic conductances. A slow potassium current is included in the dynamics of the excitatory population to reproduce the observed adaptation of the spike trains emitted by these neurons. The pattern of connectivity has a spatial structure which is correlated with the internal organization of hypercolumns in orientation columns. Numerical simulations of the model show that in an appropriate parameter range, the network settles in a synchronous chaotic state, characterized by a strong temporal variability of the neural activity which is correlated across the hypercolumn. Strong inhibitory feedback is essential for the stabilization of this state. These results show that the cooperative dynamics of large neuronal networks are capable of generating variability and synchrony similar to those observed in cortex. Auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions of neuronal spike trains are computed, and their temporal and spatial features are analyzed. In other parameter regimes, the network exhibits two additional states: synchronized oscillations and an asynchronous state. We use our model to study cortical mechanisms for orientation selectivity. It is shown that in a suitable parameter regime, when the input is not oriented, the network has a continuum of states, each representing an inhomogeneous population activity which is peaked at one of the orientation columns. As a result, when a weakly oriented input stimulates the network, it yields a sharp orientation tuning. The properties of the network in this regime, including the appearance of virtual rotations and broad stimulus-dependent cross-correlations, are investigated. The results agree with the predictions of the mean field theory which was previously derived for a simplified model of stochastic, two-state neurons. The relation between the results of the model and experiments in visual cortex are discussed.  相似文献

The mitochondrial membrane potential (delta psi m) in intact lymphocytes was calculated by measuring the distribution of radiolabelled methyltriphenylphosphonium cation. The value obtained was 120 mV. The pH gradient across the mitochondrial membrane in situ (delta pH m) was estimated to be 73 mV (1.2 pH units). Thus the electrochemical gradient of protons was about 190 mV. Addition of the mitogen concanavalin A did not alter delta psi m, showing that, if movement of Ca2+ across the inner membrane of lymphocyte mitochondria occurs when concanavalin A is added, it is accompanied by charge-compensating ion movements.  相似文献

Multimodal objects and events activate many sensory cortical areas simultaneously. This is possibly reflected in reciprocal modulations of neuronal activity, even at the level of primary cortical areas. However, the synaptic character of these interareal interactions, and their impact on synaptic and behavioral sensory responses are unclear. Here, we found that activation of auditory cortex by a noise burst drove local GABAergic inhibition on supragranular pyramids of the mouse primary visual cortex, via cortico-cortical connections. This inhibition was generated by sound-driven excitation of a limited number of cells in infragranular visual cortical neurons. Consequently, visually driven synaptic and spike responses were reduced upon bimodal stimulation. Also, acoustic stimulation suppressed conditioned behavioral responses to a dim flash, an effect that was prevented by acute blockade of GABAergic transmission in visual cortex. Thus, auditory cortex activation by salient stimuli degrades potentially distracting sensory processing in visual cortex by recruiting local, translaminar, inhibitory circuits.  相似文献

The activities of neurons in primary visual cortex have been shown to be significantly influenced by stimuli outside their classical receptive fields. We propose that these contextual influences serve pre-attentive visual segmentation by causing relatively higher neural responses to important or conspicuous image locations, making them more salient for perceptual pop-out. These locations include boundaries between regions, smooth contours, and pop-out targets against backgrounds. The mark of these locations is the breakdown of spatial homogeneity in the input. for instance, at the border between two texture regions of equal mean luminance. This breakdown causes changes in contextual influences, often resulting in higher responses at the border than at surrounding locations. This proposal is implemented in a biologically based model of VI in which contextual influences are mediated by intra-cortical horizontal connections. The behavior of the model is demonstrated using examples of texture segmentation, figure-ground segregation, target-distractor asymmetry, and contour enhancement, and is compared with psychophysical and physiological data. The model predicts (1) how neural responses should be tuned to the orientation of nearby texture borders, (2) a set of qualitative constraints on the structure of the intracortical connections, and (3) stimulus-dependent biases in estimating the locations of the region borders by pre-attentive vision.  相似文献

Phase-of-firing coding of natural visual stimuli in primary visual cortex   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We investigated the hypothesis that neurons encode rich naturalistic stimuli in terms of their spike times relative to the phase of ongoing network fluctuations rather than only in terms of their spike count. We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) and multiunit spikes from the primary visual cortex of anaesthetized macaques while binocularly presenting a color movie. We found that both the spike counts and the low-frequency LFP phase were reliably modulated by the movie and thus conveyed information about it. Moreover, movie periods eliciting higher firing rates also elicited a higher reliability of LFP phase across trials. To establish whether the LFP phase at which spikes were emitted conveyed visual information that could not be extracted by spike rates alone, we compared the Shannon information about the movie carried by spike counts to that carried by the phase of firing. We found that at low LFP frequencies, the phase of firing conveyed 54% additional information beyond that conveyed by spike counts. The extra information available in the phase of firing was crucial for the disambiguation between stimuli eliciting high spike rates of similar magnitude. Thus, phase coding may allow primary cortical neurons to represent several effective stimuli in an easily decodable format.  相似文献

Understanding how populations of neurons encode sensory information is a major goal of systems neuroscience. Attempts to answer this question have focused on responses measured over several hundred milliseconds, a duration much longer than that frequently used by animals to make decisions about the environment. How reliably sensory information is encoded on briefer time scales, and how best to extract this information, is unknown. Although it has been proposed that neuronal response latency provides a major cue for fast decisions in the visual system, this hypothesis has not been tested systematically and in a quantitative manner. Here we use a simple 'race to threshold' readout mechanism to quantify the information content of spike time latency of primary visual (V1) cortical cells to stimulus orientation. We find that many V1 cells show pronounced tuning of their spike latency to stimulus orientation and that almost as much information can be extracted from spike latencies as from firing rates measured over much longer durations. To extract this information, stimulus onset must be estimated accurately. We show that the responses of cells with weak tuning of spike latency can provide a reliable onset detector. We find that spike latency information can be pooled from a large neuronal population, provided that the decision threshold is scaled linearly with the population size, yielding a processing time of the order of a few tens of milliseconds. Our results provide a novel mechanism for extracting information from neuronal populations over the very brief time scales in which behavioral judgments must sometimes be made.  相似文献

Recent findings from the study of primary visual cortex in humans and animals blur the distinction between early and late visual processing. Under some conditions, the activity of neurons in primary visual cortex appears as close or closer to perception than activity in 'higher' visual areas.  相似文献

The visual system can be considered as a multi-layered and dynamic image processing system. According to experimental evidence, the receptive field (RF) organization is characterized by spatio-temporal properties. The modified extended Gabor (MEG) function model was proposed to describe the main spatio-temporal properties of RF at different levels of visual pathway. Based on the MEG model, a three-layered dynamic coding model was constructed for a complex cell. The responses of the complex cell depend on synaptic events from a simple cell assembly within a time window. The membrane potential evolution equation was applied to the analysis of the length of a time window. The simulation results demonstrated that a complex cell plays as a coincidence detector in encoding synaptic events within the time window.  相似文献

Coding of natural scenes in primary visual cortex   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Natural scene coding in ferret visual cortex was investigated using a new technique for multi-site recording of neuronal activity from the cortical surface. Surface recordings accurately reflected radially aligned layer 2/3 activity. At individual sites, evoked activity to natural scenes was weakly correlated with the local image contrast structure falling within the cells' classical receptive field. However, a population code, derived from activity integrated across cortical sites having retinotopically overlapping receptive fields, correlated strongly with the local image contrast structure. Cell responses demonstrated high lifetime sparseness, population sparseness, and high dispersal values, implying efficient neural coding in terms of information processing. These results indicate that while cells at an individual cortical site do not provide a reliable estimate of the local contrast structure in natural scenes, cell activity integrated across distributed cortical sites is closely related to this structure in the form of a sparse and dispersed code.  相似文献

By means of quantitative histochemical methods it has been shown that an early photic deprivation (animals kept in a dark chamber for two months after their birth) leads to a decrease in the activity level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the visual area of the cerebral cortex. With the recovery of the visual function (animals kept in normal photic conditions for two weeks) the AChE activity becomes markedly normalized. The obtained data allow to suggest that the decrease in AChE activity due to deprivation is functionally determined.  相似文献

We developed a novel antibody against cat Fos by immunizing rabbits with a 26-amino-acid peptide. Immunocytochemistry on visual cortex of cats undergoing different visual manipulations was applied to test the reliability and the efficacy of this antiserum. One hour of light stimulation after an overnight dark adaptation resulted in strongly induced Fos expression in supra- and infragranular layers of cat primary visual cortex. Short-term monocular deprivation changed the Fos expression profile into a columnar immunostaining related to ocular dominance columns. Fos expression has also been analyzed in cats in which visual input was confined to the right hemisphere by sectioning the left optic tract and the corpus callosum. In the right hemisphere, visual stimulation elicited Fos induction, whereas in the contralateral hemisphere a very low Fos signal was observed. The specificity of this newly synthesized antibody was confirmed by Western blotting. To further establish the applicability of this Fos antiserum, we performed immunostaining on monkey and rat visual cortex. This new cat Fos antibody appears to be excellent for study of Fos expression as a marker for mapping neuronal activity in mammalian brain.  相似文献

Dendritic protrusions are highly motile during postnatal development. Although spine morphological plasticity could be associated with synaptic plasticity, the function of rapid spine/filopodial motility is still unknown. To investigate the role of spine motility in the development of the visual cortex and its relation with critical periods, we used two-photon imaging of neurons from layers receiving visual input in developing mouse primary visual cortex and compared motility between control and visually deprived animals. Spine and filopodia motility was prominent during early synaptogenesis (P11-P13) but greatly decreased after P15. This "switch" was coincident with a 2.5-fold increase in protrusion density and spine formation. Spine motility was not regulated during the critical period for monocular deprivation (P19-P34). Moreover, delaying the critical period by dark rearing did not delay the normal developmental decrease of spine motility, but caused a modest further reduction in motility at P28-P35. Dark rearing and enucleation also mildly reduced spine motility before eye opening and dark rearing reduced the proportion of filopodia. We conclude that (1) rapid spine motility is not related to critical period plasticity, but is likely to play a role in early synaptogenesis, and (2) neuronal activity stimulates spine motility during synaptogenesis and promotes the appearance of dendritic filopodia.  相似文献

Perceptual learning is the improved performance that follows practice in a perceptual task. In this issue of Neuron, Yotsumoto et al. use fMRI to show that stimuli presented at the location used in training initially evoke greater activation in primary visual cortex than stimuli presented elsewhere, but this difference disappears once learning asymptotes.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) adapt selectively to contingencies in the attributes of visual stimuli. We recorded from single neurons in macaque V1 and measured the effects of adaptation either to the sum of two gratings (compound stimulus) or to the individual gratings. According to our hypothesis, there would be a component of adaptation that is specific to the compound stimulus. In a first series of experiments, the two gratings differed in orientation. One grating had optimal orientation and the other was orthogonal to it, and therefore did not activate the neuron under study. These experiments provided evidence in favour of our hypothesis. In most cells adaptation to the compound stimulus reduced responses to the compound stimulus more than it reduced responses to the optimal grating, and the responses to the compound stimulus were reduced more by adaptation to the compound stimulus than by adaptation to the individual gratings. This suggests that a component of adaptation was specific to (and caused by) the simultaneous presence of the two orientations in the compound stimulus. To test whether V1 neurons could adapt to other contingencies in the stimulus attributes, we performed a second series of experiments, in which the component gratings were parallel but differed in spatial frequency, and were both effective in activating the neuron under study. These experiments failed to reveal convincing contingent effects of adaptation, suggesting that neurons cannot adapt equally well to all types of contingency.  相似文献
