The cercaria morphology of Echinochasmus japonicus was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Cercariae, liberated from naturally infected snails (Parafossarulus manchouricus), had ovoid bodies and diminutive tails. The cercaria tegument was covered with minute spines. Four type II sensory papillae were observed on the dorsal side of the oral sucker, and type I papillae were distributed on the dorsal tegument surfaces. When cercariae were kept in the same bath as the freshwater fish, Pseudorasbora parva, which were free from trematode infections, parasites encysted only in the gills of fishes at day 4 postinfection (PI). The outermost metacercaria wall was fully formed in host tissues at day 7 PI. Adult worms were recovered from the intestines of rats, chicks, and ducks 28 days after experimental exposure to metacercariae. The head crown of the adult was armed with 24 collar spines, which were interrupted dorsal to the oral sucker, and the species was identified as E. japonicus.  相似文献

Cercariae belonging to the genus Philophthalmus (Digenea: Philophthalmidae) were detected in a freshwater snail Semisulcospira libertina collected from Innai Town, Oita Prefecture, Kyusyu, Japan. This is the first record of the cercaria of this genus from East Asia and from Semisulcospira. Daughter rediae and cercariae are briefly described and morphologically compared with similar but unidentified ones reported from Japan. Cercariae were found encysting on the surface of the bottom of the container and metamorphosed into a flask-like metacercaria characteristic of Philophthalmus.  相似文献

Laboratory-reared planarians, Dugesia tigrina, were exposed to cercariae of Echinostoma trivolvis or Echinostoma caproni. Of 100 D. tigrina exposed to 2,750 cercariae of E. trivolvis, 29 were infected with a total of 85 encysted metacercariae 24 hr postinfection (PI). None of 40 D. tigrina exposed to 1,100 cercariae of E. caproni was infected with metacercariae 24 hr PI. Cyst structure of E. trivolvis from the parenchyma of D. tigrina varied from normal to abnormal. Metacercariae removed from planarians could be excysted in an alkaline trypsin-bile salts medium. Cercariae of E. trivolvis were not attracted to dialysate material from D. tigrina. Cercariae of E. trivolvis that penetrated, but did not encyst in planarians, voided the contents of their paraesophageal glands. Cercariae of E. caproni lack paraesophageal glands. Secretions of those glands probably are involved in tissue penetration of D. tigrina by E. trivolvis cercariae.  相似文献

A new genus and species, Thrinascotrema brisbanica, is proposed to accommodate a plagiorchiidan trematode parasitic in the stomach of the freshwater turtle Elseya latisternum. The distinctive taxonomic features of the parasite are the shape and extent of the excretory bladder, and the stenostomate arrangement of the excretory collecting ducts in the adult, cercaria and metacercaria together with a cercarial protonephridial formula of 2(12+12+12)+(12+12+12). The life-cycle is three- host and aquatic. The pulmonate snail Glyptophysa gibbosa served as both a first and second intermediate host and tadpoles of Limnodynastes peronii, Adelotus brevis and Bufo marinus, and the snail Austropeplea lessoni also served as second intermediate hosts. Eggs were fully embryonated and infective when laid, but did not hatch until eaten by the snail. Cercariae first emerged 55 days after infection at 24-28 °C. They were sluggish swimmers and survived for about 48 hr. They attached firmly to the skin of snails and tadpoles on contact and began to penetrate the skin after a short exploratory migration. Metacercariae survived in snails and tadpoles for at least 3 months. It is concluded that Thrinascotrema is best placed within a new family, the Thrinascotrematidae (Digenea: Plagiorchiida), based on the unusual morphology of the excretory system.  相似文献

Zooplanktonic animals live in the open water of freshwater habitats, whilst trematodes are ubiquitous parasitic worms of aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates. A defining characteristic of trematode life cycles is the cercariae, a mainly planktonic free-living larval stage that emerges into the aquatic environment from infected molluscan hosts. Cercariae are lecithotrophic (non-feeding) larvae analogous of meroplankton. Although millions of planktonic cercariae enter freshwater habitats on a daily basis and are capable of forming into dense clouds, they are a largely neglected component of the zooplankton community, rarely mentioned in faunal studies. Nevertheless, there is increasing evidence to suggest that cercariae have important secondary roles in aquatic food webs and energy transfer. This article reacquaints freshwater biologists with cercariae, highlighting the key characteristics of their biology and population dynamics, their role in food webs, public health and veterinary importance, and the risk of increased population densities under the influence of climate change. The reasons for their neglect in freshwater biology is evaluated and considered to be associated with zooplankton sampling methodologies being unsuitable for collecting cercariae and the paucity of identification keys in the limnological literature.  相似文献

The life-cycle of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) diminuta (Stunkard & Haviland, 1924) was reproduced experimentally, starting from cercariae from naturally infected Littoridina castellanosae and L. parchappei (Hydrobiidae) collected from artificial ponds in the Zoological Garden in Buenos Aires and from Los Ranchos stream, Buenos Aires Province, respectively. Metacercariae were found encysted in the gills of experimentally exposed Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Poecilidae) and of other naturally infected freshwater fishes. Adults were obtained experimentally in chicks and mice and from a naturally infected egret, Egretta thula. A. (P.) angrense Travassos, 1916 was found parasitising the egret Ixobrychus involucris; it is considered a valid species and the morphological differences between it and A. (P.) diminuta were established. The “Phagicola-form” of the cercaria in the present life-cycle is also known in the genus Pygidiopsis.  相似文献

The distribution of Schistosoma haematobium infections in a population of Bulinus globosus snails collected from a field site in Zimbabwe is described. Cercariae of both sexes emerged from a proportion of patent infected snails, as was demonstrated by the detection of paired schistosomes in hamsters each exposed to cercariae from a single snail. These snails must have been infected by two or more miracidia. Analysis showed that the proportion of mixed-sex infections was higher than expected if infections were distributed at random among snails. An index of overdispersion was calculated. Overdispersion of infections results from heterogeneities in the exposure and/or susceptibility of snails to infection. The implications for the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis haematobium are discussed.  相似文献

Schistosoma japonicum daughter sporocysts obtained from infected Oncomelania hupensis hupensis were successfully transplanted to parasite-free O. hupensis hupensis. Survival and infection rates of recipient snails were 80% and 75% respectively. Intramolluscan development of transplanted daughter sporocysts in recipient snails appears to proceed in a similar manner as those reported for transplanted S. mansoni and S. haematobium in their respective snail intermediate hosts. Complete colonization of the digestive gland of recipient snails by sporocysts was observed 80 days after transplantation. Cercarial production during a 10-day observation from recipient snails was characterized by periods of high and low and irregular daily emissions. The average daily cercarial production was 150 per snail. Cercariae produced by recipient snails were infective to mice. Of those cercariae exposed to mice, approximately 30% developed to adult schistosomes. These results have definitive utility in the maintenance of S. japonicum in the laboratory.  相似文献

Axenic primary cultures of Himasthla elongata rediae harvested from hepatopancreas of naturally infected marine prosobranch snail Littorina littorea were maintained in Leibovitz's L-15 medium (osmolarity of approximately 780 mOsm, pH 7.8, temperature 14 degrees C under normal atmospheric conditions). Cultured rediae were active, motile and demonstrated high synthetic activity in metabolic labelling experiment. Long-term cultivation experiment showed 50% survival level of the rediae for up to 70 days and significant differences between mortality in redia groups derived from different host individuals. Half of the rediae in the most robust group survived for up to 163 days, when the experiment was terminated. Development and emergence of in vivo preformed cercariae and daughter rediae was observed. Cercariae in the culture also encysted, transformed into metacercariae and some of them in one to two weeks after the transformation spontaneously excysted into juvenile maritae. The employed culture system is characterized by a very low level of proteolytic activity. This system is suggested as a method permitting to obtain rediae secretory-excretory products free of host-derived contaminants.  相似文献

Sychnocotyle kholo n. g., n. sp. (Aspidogastrea: Aspidogastridae) is described from the small intestine of the freshwater turtle Emydura macquarii (Pleurodira: Chelidae). The new genus is distinguished from other aspidogastrids by the possession of the following suite of characters: no cirrus-sac; no hermaphroditic duct; four rows of alveoli on the ventral disc but no prominent papillae; Laurer's canal opening to the exterior. Eggs hatched to cotylocidia within 37–41 days at 17–24 °C. The life-cycle is obligate two-host, involving a mollusc and a freshwater turtle. Juvenile forms, almost entirely single worm infections, were found in the molluscs Corbiculina sp. (Bivalvia: Corbiculidae) and Thiara balonnensis (Prosobranchia: Thiaridae). Sychnocotyle is most likely to have evolved in Australia after the separation of Gondwanaland from Laurasia 120–100 mya.  相似文献

The life-cycle of Procerovum varium (Digenea: Haplorchiinae) was studied experimentally and the morphology of stages in the life-cycle has been described and illustrated. Infections with adult flukes were found in the pond heron Ardeola grayii and heavy infections with metacercariae were found, attached to the liver of the fish Oryzias melastigma (Oryziatidae) occurring in a freshwater stream situated in Visakhapatnam, India. The cercariae developing in the snail Thiara tuberculatapossessed typical haplorchiine features and were characterised by the presence of numerous cystogenous glands. Early stages of metacercarial development occurred free in the muscles of the fish intermediate host. The larvae reached the liver at 5 days post-infection, encystment commenced 2 days later and 15-day-old metacercariae were found to be infective to chicks, ducks and mice that served as suitable experimental hosts. The adult flukes obtained from natural and experimental infections showed many intraspecific variations, especially in the size and shape of the expulsor which depend on the quantity of sperm it contains. The validity of various species described in the genus and differentiated on the basis of differences in the size of the expulsor has been examined. It is concluded that only three species of the genus, namely P. varium, P. cheni and P. calderoni, are valid. "P. sisoni" of Chen (1949) is confirmed as a synonym of P. varium. P. varium is reported for the first time from India.  相似文献

The infection dynamics of Centrocestus armatus cercariae with respect to second intermediate fish hosts were investigated using cercariae collected from naturally infected Semisulcospira libertina. Cercariae survival and infectivity were recorded at 2-hr intervals. Survival remained constant but decreased abruptly at 30 hr of age. An age-dependent model presented the best-fit curve for the survival data (r2 0.936), implying that cercariae tended to allocate resources equally among themselves and then died once those resources were depleted. Cercariae infectivity remained constant over the first 10 hr of life and then declined; an age-dependent model also provided a better fit (r2 = 0.956). The transmission rate of C. armatus cercariae to the fish host was relatively low near the time of emergence from the snail host but peaked at 85% after 1 hr and then maintained a plateau period until 5 hr of exposure to fish. The pattern of transmission was also investigated initially at varying densities of cercariae and then by maintaining a constant cercariae density but varying the total number. Results revealed that the pattern of transmission was frequency-dependent.  相似文献

A direct life-cycle in Reighardia sternae, a cephalobaenid pentastomid of gulls was investigated: the work was prompted by a report of eggs and larvae recovered from the stomach and intestine of a naturally infected gull. Infective pentastomid eggs were obtained by surgically transplanting maturing female Reighardia, taken from freshly shot wild gulls, into captive recipients. Faecal material from birds thus artificially infected was collected daily and examined for eggs. Eggs were force fed to 33 hand-reared (from eggs or nestlings) juvenile gulls which were selected at random and sacrificed at intervals thereafter and examined for pentastomids. One hour after infection, primary larvae appear in the body cavity where they moult immediately. They grow steadily and by 27-35 days are sexually differentiated, and by 66 days have copulated. Fertilized females take a further 116 days to produce eggs by which time they are 7-6 cm long. The complex migrations undertaken by developing larvae in the gull, and the problems of the mechanism of direct transmission, are discussed.  相似文献

Cercariae of Himasthla quissetensis were cultivated on the chick chorioallantois maintained at 38 ± 1°C and a relative humidity of 70–75%. Of 68, 6-day-old eggs, each inoculated with 100 cercariae, 28 (41%) were examined 1–9 days post-inoculation. Of the 28 eggs, 23 (82%) were infected with a total of 224 live worms plus 10 encysted metacercariae. Worms contained blood or hematin-like material in their intestinal caeca and showed considerable development of reproductive structures. A total of 58, 6- or 7-day-old chorioallantoic-worms were serially transferred to new 6-day-old embryos, but only a single live worm was recovered after 13 days on two membranes. Based on fixed and stained specimens, 7-day-old chorioallantoic-worms increased their body area about 4× compared to cercariae and the 13-day-old worm increased its body area about 10×.  相似文献

Experimental infections of Lymnaea columella with Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the influence of shell size on the infection rate and on the outcome of rediae and cercariae. Snails were divided into seven groups according to shell size: 2-4 mm, 5-6 mm, 7-8 mm, 9-10 mm, 11-12 mm, 13-14 mm and 15 mm or more. One hundred snails in each group were infected by using four miracidia for each snail. Snails with larger shell size showed a lower infection rate, the groups presenting the highest (79%) and lowest (2%) proportions of positives being those of 5-6 mm and 15 mm or more, respectively. Cercariae were present in 21% of them at 31 days post-infection, and cercarial shedding was observed 61 days post-infection. It was concluded that there is a non-linear negative association between shell size and infection rate.  相似文献
