Trypanosomes that cause sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense) are entirely dependent on tsetse for their transmission between hosts, but the flies are not easily infected. This situation has not arisen by chance - the tsetse has evolved an efficient defence system against trypanosome invasion. In this review, Susan Welburn and Ian Maudlin chart the progress of trypanosomes through the fly and identify some of the hazards faced by both parasite and fly that affect vector competence of tsetse.  相似文献

The “Aleria formation”, described in northeastern Corsica, consists of siliciclastic deposits referred to a deltaic environment and comprises diatomitic lenses exposed at Casabianda. The Aleria formation fills a depression of the Messinian erosional surface and is overlain by Early Pliocene sediments in several places. This suggests a late Messinian-earliest Pliocene age. Diatom microflora is well-preserved and contains 59 species. Pennates indicate a very large diversity with 54 species, while Centrics are represented only by five species. Diatom assemblages show a relative constant composition along the studied interval. The species Aulacoseiragranulata is the dominant taxon with about 90% in all samples. Taxa are of different salinity classes and different modes of life (planktic, tychoplanktic, benthic, epiphytic…), suggesting multiple environmental factor interactions. The environmental model suggested by sedimentological and biological data led as to assume a pond-like coastal receptacle common in deltaic system. This receptacle was slightly influenced by the close marine waters and was supplied by permanent freshwaters from continental run-off and alluvial sheet. This model based on diatom assemblages provides new data for palaeoenvironmental and chronological interpretations of the so-called Messinian Lago-Mare deposits.  相似文献

In the summer–autumn period of 2007, 2010, and 2013, the peculiarities of Polar cod feeding Boreogadus saida in the Kara Sea were considered. In these years, the intensity of feeding of adult individuals was quite similar. Spatial and interannual differences in the composition of the food have been observed. Copepoda, Euphausiacea, and tunicates (Oikopleura sp.) dominated in the food of young fish. The main preys of adult individuals are Hyperiidea, Copepoda, Euphausiacea, and fish. As the length of Polar cod increases, the weight percentage of copepods decreases and the portion of fish increases.  相似文献

The late beginning of the research on the neolithisation in the Algarve (southern Portugal) has been providing, as a paradox, excellent conditions for the establishment of interdisciplinary research and the test of working hypotheses. The systematic projects put forward by the University of Algarve permit us today to conclude on a preliminary basis for the formation of a Neolithic enclave at ca. 5500 cal BC, centred in the coastal territories of the region. This enclave is fully Neolithic in economic terms and it is the westernmost extension of the Mediterranean Cardial. However, some specific features of these first Neolithic groups’ artefactual items (such as pottery morphology and style and some technological aspects of chipped stone production) indicate the existence of phenomena of partial reformulation of their material cultures. According to the presently available data, this complex process seems to have occurred in similar traits also in Andalucia and coastal Morocco, that is, at the moment of the passage to the Atlantic. This individualization within the Neolithic of Cardial tradition is the equivalent to the same general cultural phenomena that have been responsible for the formation, for example, of the so-called “Franco-Iberian Cardial” or “Tirrenic Cardial” at the time of settling of the Neolithic groups in these regions.  相似文献

The species composition of the polychaetes derived from ichthyological and Sigsbee trawls in the Pechora and Kara seas in 2012 was studied and compared with the grab survey data of 1993–1995. The distribution of the large sabellidae, nektobenthic, and bathypelagic species that are poorly caught by a grab has been determined for the first time. Changes that were observed in the biogeographical polychaete structure in the Kara Sea (a higher proportion of the boreal species and a lower proportion of the Arctic species) may reflect a response of zoobenthos to the Arctic warming in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.  相似文献

The mitosis-to-interphase transition involves dramatic cellular reorganization from a state that supports chromosome segregation to a state that complies with all functions of an interphase cell. This process, termed mitotic exit, depends on the removal of mitotic phosphorylations from a broad range of substrates. Mitotic exit regulation involves inactivation of mitotic kinases and activation of counteracting protein phosphatases. The key mitotic exit phosphatase in budding yeast, Cdc14, is now well understood. By contrast, in animal cells, it is now emerging that mitotic exit relies on distinct regulatory networks, including the protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A.  相似文献

本文收集了近年来70种豆科植物种子形态学和消化道作用后萌发行为数据,利用植物亲缘系谱和整合分析,以阐明豆科植物种子经过草食动物消化道作用后萌发行为的变化。结果表明,豆科植物种子经过消化后,萌发率受到抑制(OR=0.89),但抑制效应和促进效应差异不显著(OR95%=0.61~1.28,P0.05);以亲缘关系为依据将70种豆科植物分为7个类群,其中消化作用对金合欢属、含羞草属、银合欢属、牧豆树属和角豆树属的第1类群种子萌发有显著的促进效应;而对包括木豆属、毛蔓豆属、爪哇大豆属、扁豆属、胡枝子属和距瓣豆属的第4类群有显著的抑制效应。将第3、5类群再划分成3个亚组进一步分析,结果表明,消化作用对苜蓿属种子萌发有显著促进,笔花豆属则受到显著抑制,三叶草属种子的抑制和促进效应之间差异不显著。车轴草族25种植物种子表现出质量中等种子经消化后萌发率显著提高,而过小或过大的种子经消化道作用后萌发率受到明显抑制。其他45种植物的种子重量与消化后的萌发效应存在不显著的负相关关系(R2=0.035,P0.05)。  相似文献

The mycobiota of bottom sediments at depths of 128?472 m was investigated in Barents and Kara sea areas remote from the shore. The species composition and fungal abundance, that is, the number of fungal colony-forming units (CFUs), were determined in 5 samples from the Kara Sea and in 14 samples of the Barents Sea. For the first time for the Arctic seas, the fungal biomass was determined in 12 samples of the bottom sediments from the Barents Sea. It was found that fungal abundance in the bottom sediments of the both seas did not exceed 13 CFUs per 1 g of dry substrate weight. In total, only 58 colonies of filamentous fungi belonging to 22 morphotypes, 8 of which were sterile, were isolated from all the samples. No more than six morphotypes were contained in 1 g of dried substrate; they were mostly species of the genus Cladosporium and sterile isolates. The study of the fungal biomass detected both spores and fungal mycelium in the bottom sediments. The total biomass was extremely low and ranged from 0.1 to 0.620 mg/g of the studied substrate. Small spores (with a diameter less than 3 μm) absolutely predominated (from 88 to 99.7% of the biomass).  相似文献

Feeding of Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides in the northern Kara Sea was studied based on data collected in summer–autumn 2007–2013. The main food of all size groups of halibut were fish—up to 98% of weight of the food bolus. Larger individuals had lower intensity of feeding as compared to juveniles, which was probably owing to the lack of suitable food for large fish and, along with gonad maturation process, could be one of the reasons of their migration to the Barents Sea. The northern part of the Kara Sea, as well as the adjacent areas of Barents Sea, can be considered as an important area of habitation of juvenile Greenland halibut of the Norwegian–Barents Sea population.  相似文献

Aim Predation is generally viewed as a factor that limits the distribution of animal prey species. However, in certain instances, such as seed dispersal, predation may enhance the dispersal capability of prey species. In a prior study, we found that land snails are preyed upon by the Japanese white‐eye (Zosterops japonicus) and the brown‐eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) in the Ogasawara Islands. In this paper we provide experimental and field evidence indicating that land snails could potentially be dispersed through bird predation. Location Hahajima Island of the Ogasawara Islands in the western Pacific. Methods Experimentation was first performed to test whether the land snail Tornatellides boeningi could remain alive after being swallowed and passed through the bird digestive system. Next, in order to investigate the potential role of internal bird transport and dispersal of this snail, we investigated the relationship between the distribution of population genetic diversity in the snail and the regional geographical abundance of predatory birds. The population genetic structure of T. boeningi and isolation by distance were inferred with Arlequin . The association between nucleotide diversity in T. boeningi populations and population density of predators was examined using a generalized linear mixed model. We conducted a likelihood ratio test for the full model and for another model that removed the fixed effect. Results Of the 119 snails fed to Japanese white‐eyes and 55 snails fed to brown‐eared bulbuls, 14.3% and 16.4% of the snails, respectively, passed through the gut alive. Additionally, one snail gave birth to juveniles after emerging from a bird’s gut. Significant heterogeneity among the populations of T. boeningi on Hahajima was indicated using AMOVA; however, there was no evidence of isolation by distance. A positive correlation was found between levels of mitochondrial DNA variation among and within T. boeningi populations and the density of Japanese white‐eyes in the wild. Main conclusions Bird predation appears to be a method of dispersal for T. boeningi, and our results suggest that bird‐mediated dispersal plays a role in land snail population structure.  相似文献

Using mitotic selection, synchronous populations of passage 25 and passage 50 WI38 cells were obtained. Thymidine incorporation, mitotic index, and labeling index were determined. No great differences could be seen in the organization of the cell cycle of low passage and high passage cells. Although labeling indices for passage 25 and passage 50 exponential cells were 83% and 37%, respectively, 75% of all mitotically selected cells were found to enter S phase, regardless of passage number. Thus, the loss of late passage diploid cell cultures does not occur from alteration of the cell cycle in the majority of rapidly proliferating cells.  相似文献
