Responses of three groups of neural fibers from the chorda tympani of the hamster to binary mixtures of taste stimuli applied to the tongue were analyzed. The groups displayed different sensitivities to six chemicals at concentrations that had approximately equal effects on the whole nerve. Sucrose-best fibers responded strongly only to sucrose and D-phenylalanine. NaCl-best and HCl-best fibers, responded to four electrolytes: equally to CaCl2 and nearly equally to HCl, but the former responded more to NaCl, and the latter responded more to NH4Cl. The groups of fibers dealt differently with binary mixtures. Sucrose- best fibers responded to a mixture of sucrose and D-phenylalanine as if one of the chemicals had been appropriately increased in concentration, but they responded to a mixture of either one and an electrolyte as if the concentration of sucrose or D-phenylalanine had been reduced. NaCl- best fibers responded to a mixture as if it were a "mixture" of two appropriate concentrations of one chemical, or somewhat less. But, responses of HCl-best fibers to mixtures were greater than that, approaching a sum of responses to components. These results explain effects on the whole nerve, suggest that the sensitivity of a mammalian taste receptor to one chemical can be affected by a second, which may or may not be a stimulus for that receptor, and suggest that some effects of taste mixtures in humans may be the result of peripheral processes.  相似文献

Acute exposureto ozone (O3) enhances pulmonarychemoreflex response to capsaicin, and an increased sensitivity ofbronchopulmonary C-fiber afferent endings may be involved. The presentstudy was aimed at determining the effect ofO3 on the responses of pulmonary Cfibers to chemical and mechanical stimuli. A total of 31 C fibers werestudied in anesthetized, open-chest, and vagotomized rats. Duringcontrol, right atrial injection of a low dose of capsaicin abruptlyevoked a short and mild burst of discharge [0.77 ± 0.28 impulses (imp)/s, 2-s average]. After acute exposure toO3 (3 parts/million for 30 min),there was no significant change in arterial blood pressure, trachealpressure, or baseline activity of C fibers. However, the stimulatoryeffect of the same dose of capsaicin on these fibers was markedlyenhanced (6.05 ± 0.88 impulses/s;P < 0.01) and prolonged immediatelyafter O3 exposure, and returnedtoward control in 54 ± 6 min. Similarly, the pulmonary C-fiberresponse to injection of a low dose of lactic acid was also elevatedafter O3 exposure. Furthermore,O3 exposure significantly potentiated the C-fiber response to constant-pressure (tracheal pressure = 30 cmH2O) lunginflation (control: 0.19 ± 0.07 imp/s; afterO3: 1.12 ± 0.26 imp/s;P < 0.01). In summary, these results show that the excitabilities of pulmonary C-fiber afferents to lunginflation and injections of chemical stimulants are markedly potentiated after acute exposure toO3, suggesting a possible involvement of these afferents in theO3-induced changes in breathing pattern and chest discomfort in humans.

We studied the influence of central and peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation on the activities of the phrenic and internal intercostal (iic) nerves in decerebrate, vagotomized, and paralyzed cats with bilateral pneumothoraces. Whole iic nerves of the rostral thorax (T2-T5) usually discharged during neural inspiration, whereas those of the caudal thorax (T7-T11) were primarily active during neural expiration. Filaments of rostral iic nerves that terminated in iic muscles generally discharged during expiration, suggesting that inspiratory activity recorded in whole iic nerves may have innervated other structures, possibly parasternal muscles. All nerves were phasically active at hyperoxic normocapnia and increased their activities systematically with hypercapnia. Isocapnic hypoxia or intra-arterial NaCN injection consistently increased phrenic and inspiratory iic nerve activities. In contrast, expiratory iic nerve discharges were either decreased (10 cats) or increased (7 cats) by hypoxia. Furthermore, expiratory responses to NaCN were highly variable and could not be predicted from the corresponding response to hypoxia. The results show that central and peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation can affect inspiratory and expiratory motoneuron activities differentially. The variable effects of hypoxia on expiratory iic nerve activity may reflect a relatively weak influence of carotid body afferents on expiratory bulbospinal neurons. However, the possibility that the magnitude of expiratory motoneuron activity is influenced by the intensity of the preceding centrally generated inspiratory discharge is also discussed.  相似文献

Unit responses of the rabbit visual cortex were investigated in relation to size of visual stimuli moving in their receptive field. With an increase in size of the stimulus in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement ("width" of the stimulus) an initial increase in the intensity of the unit response through spatial summation of excitory effects is followed by a decrease through lateral inhibition. This inhibition is observed between zones of the receptive field which behave as activating when tested by a stimulus of small size. Each neuron has its own "preferred" size of stimuli evoking its maximal activation. No direct correlation is found between the "preferred" stimulus size and the size of the receptive field. With a change in stimulus size in the direction of movement ("length" of the stimulus) the responses to stimuli of optimal size may be potentiated through mutual facilitation of the effects evoked by the leading and trailing edges of the stimulus and weakened in response to stimuli of large size. The selective behavior of the neurons with respect to stimulus size is intensified in the case of coordinated changes in their length and width. It is postulated that the series of neurons responding to stimuli of different "preferred" dimensions may constitute a system classifying stimuli by their size.A. N. The ectodermal slow system (SS1) is one of 3 separate nerve nets in sea anemones. SS1 sensory responses coordinate swimming in Stomphia coccinea (escape response) and expansion to dissolved food substances in Urticina felina (pre-feeding response). Here we have studied Actinia equina, Anemonia viridis, and Anthopleura ballii. Although these anemones can escape from nudibranch predators, the SS1 response to attack by Aeolidia papillosa is probably evoked mechanically rather than chemically (cf. Stomphia). Multiple SS1 pulses to mechanical stimulation are described for the first time. Previous work has shown that in the pre-feeding response of Urticina the SS1 is excited by betaine; in Actinia however, the excitant is proline. The anemones studied can utilize the SS1 in 2 different behavioural responses (escape and pre-feeding/feeding) because the different receptors involved respond at different frequencies (at around 0.6 Hz in escape and 0.2 Hz in pre-feeding).  相似文献

Summary Single unit optic nerve responses were studied in isolated eye-optic lobe preparations ofLoligo opalescens. Units could be classified as fast or slow. Fast units were invariably receptor cell axons; slow units might be either receptor cell axons or centrifugal axons. On, on-off, andoff units could be found within these classes. A given unit was not stable with respect to these latter attributes which depended greatly on the history and level of illumination. The curve which relates quantal content of a brief flash to number of spikes in the response has a logarithmic phase, but it saturates as brightness is increased further. An inhibitory component has been demonstrated following the response to a flash. It is probably responsible for the non-monotonic relationship between frequency and light intensity which is observed for sustained stimuli. Background light or previous illumination can lead to a facilitation of the response to a flash. The authors share equally in credit and responsibility for this paper and for the research reported here. Cross sections of olfactory nerves present a unique appearance. They indicate the presence of large numbers of very small nerve fibers, with a modal diameter of about 0.2 µ and a narrow range for their size variation. From one side of the nasal septum of a pig the yield of fibers was estimated at 6,000,000; the number arising from the turbinates would be considerably larger. The fibers are attached to the membranes of the Schwann sheaths in large bundles through mesaxons longer and more branched than those that have been seen in other nerves. Continuity of the axons between the nerves and the bipolar cells was traced in an examination of the olfactory mucous membrane; and the indication of a one-to-one relationship between cells and axons was reinforced by a comparative count. After the axons leave the bipolar cells they become incased in the central projections of the sustentacular cells. Where the latter come into contact with the basal cells the axons emerge to push back the plasma membranes of the basal cells in the first step in acquiring their nerve sheaths. Later steps are described. When the axons are delivered by the basal cells to the collecting Schwann tubes, they are already aggregated into small bundles with sheaths fundamentally the same as those they will possess until they are delivered to the glia in the olfactory bulb. Some of the aspects of the cytology of the bipolar cells and adjoining sustentacular cells are described. A survey of the physiological properties of olfactory nerve fibers was made in some experiments on the olfactory nerve of the pike. Almost all of the action potential is encompassed within a single elevation, manifesting at its front a conduction velocity of 0.2 m./sec. For a comparison, the last elevation in the C action potential in the sciatic nerve of the frog is cited as an example of conduction at the same velocity. Though expressed through long time constants, the properties of the pike olfactory fibers conform to the generalized schema for properties of vertebrate nerve fibers. This conformity signalizes that they differ from the exceptional properties of the unmedullated fibers of dorsal root origin. An afferent function for unmedullated nerve fibers does not imply that the fibers concerned are alike in their physiological properties.  相似文献

The effects induced by training on the H-reflex of soleus and lateral gastrocnemius muscles have been studied on 19 adult male volunteers; out of these, 10 were non-trained subjects and the remaining 9 were top level athletes engaged in sports requiring very rapid and intense contractions (sprinters and volley-ball players). It has been observed that the latency of the M response is significantly higher in the athletes than in the non-trained subjects. Instead, no significant differences were observed between these two groups, concerning the latency of H response. The increase of M response latency is likely due to a decrease of nerve conduction velocity in the terminal part of motor fibers. The possibility that this conduction speed decrease could be dependent on sprouting and/or terminal branching growth of the motor nerve ending is discussed.  相似文献

An olfactometer is described that presents temporally-discretepulses of stimuli to individual chemosensory structures. Thedevice is based on standard pressure injection techniques inwhich pulses of compressed air eject nanoliter volumes of upto six stimulants from small diameter glass micropipettes. Thedevice should be readily adaptable to different chemoreceptorpreparations.  相似文献
