Summary  In the highly fragmented agricultural landscapes of temperate southern Australia, fodder shrubs are being established as part of commercial grazing enterprises to fill the summer-autumn livestock feed gap. These woody perennial plantings have greater structural complexity than conventional grazing systems and may supplement resources for native fauna. However, to date the resources provided by these systems are poorly defined or documented. In this paper, we identify the potential environmental values of fodder shrub plantings by considering natural and planted shrub-based systems, with a particular focus on planted saltbush in non-saline lands. In marginal agricultural areas, shrub-based perennial fodder crops can not only provide economic benefits through improved livestock productivity, but also contribute to reducing soil erosion and offer potential carbon sequestration opportunities. We contend that these systems may also provide resources for a range of native fauna. More information is needed on the biodiversity value of grazing systems based on perennial shrubs so that their potential to contribute to conservation in multifunctional landscapes can be fully realised and appropriate management recommendations provided.  相似文献

Fever, like other mechanisms for defence against pathogens, may have positive and negative consequences for host fitness. In ectotherms, fever can be attained through modified behavioural thermoregulation. Here we examine potential costs of behavioural fever by holding adult, gregarious desert locusts at elevated temperatures simulating a range of fever intensities. We found no effect of fever temperatures on primary fitness correlates of survival and fecundity. However, flight capacity and mate competition were reduced, although there was no relation between time spent at fever temperatures and magnitude of the response. While these effects could indicate a direct cost of fever, they are also consistent with a shift towards the solitaria phase state that, in a field context, could be considered an adaptive life-history response to limit the impact of disease. These conflicting interpretations highlight the importance of considering complex defence mechanisms and trade-offs in an appropriate ecological context.  相似文献

Bright body colorations of orb-weaving spiders have been hypothesizedto be attractive to insects and thus function to increase foragingsuccess. However, the color signals of these spiders are alsoconsidered to be similar to those of the vegetation background,and thus the colorations function to camouflage the spiders.In this study, we evaluated these 2 hypotheses by field experimentsand by quantifying the spiders' visibility to insects. We firstcompared the insect interception rates of orbs constructed bythe orchid spider, Leucauge magnifica, with and without thespider. Orbs with spiders intercepted significantly more insectsthan orbs without. Such a result supported the prey attractionbut not the camouflaging hypothesis. We then tested whetherbright body colorations were responsible for L. magnifica'sattractiveness to insects by manipulating the spiders' colorsignals with paint. Alteration of color signals significantlyreduced L. magnifica's insect interception and consumption rates,indicating that these spiders' bright body parts were attractiveto insects. Congruent with the finding of field manipulationswere the color contrasts of various body parts of these spiders.When viewed against the vegetation background, the green bodyparts were lower, but the bright parts were significantly higherthan the discrimination threshold. Results of this study thusprovide direct evidence that bright body colorations of orbweavers function as visual lures to attract insects.  相似文献

Summary Feeding experiments were performed with seven species of non-webbuilding spiders and a variety of prey taxa. Some species were generally polyphagous whereas other spiders restricted their prey to a few groups. At one end of the spectrum of prey specialization the thomisid Misumena vatia is limited to a few taxa of possible prey (Table 1). The literature of prey records of non-webbuilding spiders is reviewed (Table 2) with special emphasis on oligophagous or monophagous spiders. We studied the coexistence of four species of Sylvia warblers living in Mediterranean matorral in order to identify the respective role of ecological segregation and of interspecific territoriality in explaining the local distribution of these four species. Data on habitat use, foraging behaviour and interspecific spacial segregation were collected on Corsica and on Spargi (Sardinia) islands. Despite large overlap in patch selection and in foraging behaviour the four species did segregate ecologically and behaviourally while foraging (differences in the choice of plant species used for foraging, in the height of the plant selected, in the selection of the portion of the plant volume used and in the selection of the plant structure explored). Complementarity in foraging behaviour was observed in the morphologically and ecologically closest species: the Dartford ( Sylvia undata ) and the Marmora's ( Sylvia sarda ) warblers. We did not observe any evidence of direct interspecific interactions in song, alarm, or aggressive behaviour. Nor did we observe patterns of spatial distribution that would support the idea of coexistence by interspecific territorial exclusion. These results contrast with the results of Cody & Walter (1976) suggesting interspecific territoriality in Mediterranean Sylvia warblers. They are consistent with other published results emphasizing ecological differences as explanation for species coexistence.  相似文献

Background and aims

Many rich fens are threatened by high nutrient inputs, but the literature is inconsistent with respect to the type of nutrient limitation and the influence of edaphic characteristics.

Methods

We performed experiments with N- and P-fertilization in three endangered rich fen types: floating fen with Scorpidium scorpioides, non-floating fen with Scorpidium cossonii, floodplain fen with Hamatocaulis vernicosus. In addition, K-fertilization was carried out in the floodplain fen.

Results

The floodplain fen showed no response to P-addition, but N- and K-addition led to grass encroachment and decline of moss cover and species richness. In contrast, in the P-limited floating fen with S. scorpioides, P-addition led to increased vascular plant production at the expense of moss cover. Scorpidium scorpioides, however, also declined after N-addition, presumably due to ammonium toxicity. The fen with S. cossonii took an intermediate position, with NP co-limitation. These striking contrasts corresponded with edaphic differences. The N-limited fen showed low Ca:Fe ratios and labile N-concentrations, and high concentrations of plant-available P and Fe-bound P. The P-limited fen showed an opposite pattern with high Ca:Fe ratios and labile N-concentrations, and low P-concentrations.

Conclusions

This implies that edaphic characteristics dictate the nature of nutrient limitation, and explain contrasting effects of N- and P-eutrophication in different fens.  相似文献

Inter-generation differences in foot dimensions were examined using ANCOVA to determine whether aging or secular change is the more important causal factor. In examining the results, bone size was assumed not to change after the end of linear growth, while foot arches were assumed to become flatter rather than higher if there were any changes in skeletal structure. Changes in overall body build according to age were examined using statistical data collected by the government through population-follow-up. Secular changes in foot length (FL) and foot breadth, diagonal (FB) as well as the changes with age in FB were examined using data measured at ages younger than 50 years. The effects of overall body build were examined using the body mass index (BMI). Compared to the 1970 group (birth year: 1960-78) of the same FL, the 1930 group (birth year: 1909-39) had larger foot circumferences, wider breadth measurements, higher dorsal arches and ball, and greater toe 5 angle, but had shorter fibular instep lengths and shorter 5th metatarsal bones. The 1930 groups tended to have larger FB than the 1970 group of the same foot circumference. No inter-generation differences were observed in the heights at the medial and lateral malleoli, toe 1 angle, or the relationship between FB and heel breadth. These findings are discussed in terms of the effects of weight increase after the end of linear growth, changes in skeletal structure, overall body build as young adults, socioeconomic status during the growth period, as well as differential growth rates of foot bones. The conclusions are 1) changes in foot length and longitudinal arches due to aging are negligible, 2) the large circumferences, breadths, and higher dorsal arches and ball of the 1930 group for their foot length are better explained by their robust bones than by the increase in soft tissue after the end of linear growth, and 3) the larger FB of the 1930 group for their foot circumference is partly explained by their shorter fibular instep length. As a whole, factors affecting growth (secular change) are more important than changes after the end of growth (aging) in the inter-generation differences in foot morphology.  相似文献

Geographically varying rodent dynamics may be due to specific landscape effects or to regional variation. Two common vole species (Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus agrestis), their main predators and their impact on some important food items were monitored in Sweden on forest clearcuts in two different landscape types, situated in two different regions with different climatic conditions. Censuses, with 10-16 clearcuts in each landscape and both landscapes in the two regions, were designed to permit analyses of variance of the effects of landscape composition and region on dynamics and species interactions. Region had a far greater influence than landscape on vole numbers, on the proportions of generalist and specialist predators and on the winter browsing of bark of indigenous and experimental woody plants as well on seed consumption in experimental supplies. The findings indicated an influence of the depth and quality of the snow cover on the predation rates by generalist and specialist predators. However, there were also clear signs of food limitation in the snow-rich areas. Such areas had fewer generalist predators, which probably meant less directly density-dependent predation. Thus, lack of high-quality food may put a brake on population growth in climatically harsh regions, permitting increasing populations of specialist predators such as small mustelids to subsequently over-utilise their main prey and potentially cause prolonged low densities. Snow conditions may affect numbers and interactions both within habitats, landscapes and regions. Thus, to more fully understand rodent dynamics, small-scale movements and interactions of individuals in relation to the main large-scale factor(s) of various regions need to be examined.  相似文献

Abstract   Australia is isolated from the rest of the world geographically but not scientifically: Australian entomology has a long and distinguished record of collaboration with a diversity of other countries. Much of the focus relates to keeping new pests out of Australia (biosecurity and quarantine) and managing those that do get in (biological control and insect pest management). Many projects have cooperated with neighbouring countries, to assist them to control pests and thereby reduce threats to Australia. Biological control projects have also had two-way benefits, and examples are given of various collaborations in these fields.  相似文献

Groups of linyphiid spiders (Erigone spp.) (Araneae, Linyphiidae), collected at intervals from arable land, were tested in laboratory bioassays to determine the proportion of individuals that exhibited ballooning behaviour on each field sampling occasion. There was no significant variation in the proportions of spiders in each test group ballooning in the laboratory over a year. Investigations of ground density and aerial dispersal, in a grass field and a winter-wheat field, confirmed that peaks in numbers of spiders observed ballooning in the field generally coincided with population peaks in the summer and autumn. Significant correlations between ground populations and aerial catches were found for total spiders, immature spiders, and Bathyphantes gracilis (Blackwall) in both fields, adult spiders in the grass field, Erigone spp. in the grass, and Meioneta rurestris (C.L. Koch) in the wheat. The other groups analysed, Lepthyphantes tenuis (Blackwall) in both fields, Erigone spp. in wheat, and M. rurestris in grass, showed similar but non-significant trends. No significant difference was found between overall ground-to-air ratios for males compared to females, but adult spiders were more likely to balloon than immatures.  相似文献

We compared glyphosate, glufosinate and metsulfuron-methyl to control Ambrosia artemisiifolia under non-crop conditions. A laboratory study showed that A. artemisiifolia is an easy-to-wet species and that glufosinate and glyphosate are quickly absorbed by its leaves (nearly 100% in 24 h). Metsulfuron-methyl absorption was slower (about 50% in 24 h) but was strongly promoted by terpenic alcohol and esterified rapeseed oil. In the greenhouse, all three herbicides were efficacious against A. artemisiifolia, with ED50s of <23, 23 and 0.8 g ha(-1) for glufosinate, glyphosate and metsulfuron-methyl, respectively. These results were confirmed on a non-crop area for glufosinate and glyphosate, which at half the registered dose reached high efficacies at both the 4 to 6-node and flowering stages of A. artemisiifolia. By contrast, metsulfuron-methyl showed no efficacy. However, after treatment at the 4- to 6-node stage, new emergence of A. artemisiifolia led to the presence of vigorous plants that bore numerous flowers and produced high levels of pollen. After treatment at the flowering stage, flower production by A. artemisiifolia was not significantly affected, but achene weight was decreased by 60 to 70% and seed viability was only 8 to 13% for the treated plants, as compared to 85% for the control. No significant difference was observed between the two herbicides and between the doses. It is concluded that glufosinate can be an alternative to glyphosate for the chemical control of A. artemisiifolia on non-crop areas. However, with both herbicides, it is difficult to attain the two objectives of reducing seed production and pollen production by means of only one treatment.  相似文献

We assessed the importance of spatial heterogeneity for the aggregation of helminth populations in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus (Arvicolinae) using a previously published method which allows to analyse parasite aggregation at two host population levels, i.e., within and between spatial samples of the host population.
In the main empirical material from Finnish Lapland (Pallasjärvi), all five helminth species were significantly aggregated within study sites, but only three rare species showed significant aggregation among sites. In all helminth species, the total aggregation was primarily (79-98%) determined by aggregation within sites, i.e., between host individuals. Despite the larger spatial scale and more heterogeneous landscape, the comparative material from South Finland (Luhanka) supported the generally high proportion of the total aggregation due to within-site heterogeneity.
Despite the clear interspecific differences in patchiness of helminth populations, the proportion of the total aggregation due to among-site heterogeneity did not vary significantly among helminth species. The results indicate a link between aggregation at two population levels; species that showed strong within-site aggregation were also characterised by pronounced spatial heterogeneity and significant among-site aggregation.  相似文献

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the U.S., and marijuana use by women is on the rise. Women have been found to be more susceptible to the development of cannabinoid abuse and dependence, have more severe withdrawal symptoms, and are more likely to relapse than men. The majority of research in humans suggests that women are more likely to be affected by cannabinoids than men, with reports of enhanced and decreased performance on various tasks. In rodents, females are more sensitive than males to effects of cannabinoids on tests of antinociception, motor activity, and reinforcing efficacy. Studies on effects of cannabinoid exposure during adolescence in both humans and rodents suggest that female adolescents are more likely than male adolescents to be deleteriously affected by cannabinoids. Sex differences in response to cannabinoids appear to be due to activational and perhaps organizational effects of gonadal hormones, with estradiol identified as the hormone that contributes most to the sexually dimorphic effects of cannabinoids in adults. Many, but not all sexually dimorphic effects of exogenous cannabinoids can be attributed to a sexually dimorphic endocannabinoid system in rodents, although the same has not yet been established firmly for humans. A greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying sexually dimorphic effects of cannabinoids will facilitate development of sex-specific approaches to treat marijuana dependence and to use cannabinoid-based medications therapeutically.  相似文献

Intensive reindeer grazing has been hypothesized to drive vegetation shifts in the arctic tundra from a low-productive lichen dominated state to a more productive moss dominated state. Although the more productive state can potentially host more herbivores, it may still be less suitable as winter grazing grounds for reindeer, if lichens, the most preferred winter forage, are less abundant. Therefore, such a shift towards mosses may have severe consequences for reindeer husbandry if ground-growing lichens have difficulties to recover. We tested if reindeer cause this type of vegetation state shifts in boreal forest floor vegetation, by comparing plant species composition and major soil processes inside and outside of more than 40-year-old exclosures. Lichen biomass was more than twice as high inside exclosures than in grazed controls and almost 5 times higher than in heavily grazed patches. Contrary to our predictions, net N mineralization and plant production were higher in the exclosures than in the grazed controls. The lack of response of phytometer plants in a common garden bioassay indicated that changed soil moisture may drive effects of reindeer on plant productivity in these dry Pine forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster is widely used to study immune system function in insects. However, little work has been done in D. melanogaster on the effect of temperature on the immune system. Here we describe experiments that demonstrate that cooler temperatures enhance survival after infection and alter expression of immune-related genes in flies. This effect appears to be due not only to the fact that colder temperatures slow down bacterial growth, but also to the beneficial effects of cooler temperature on immune function. We explore the possibility that heat shock proteins, and in particular, Hsp83, may improve immune function at cool temperatures. We have long known that temperature can alter immune responses against microbial pathogens in insects. The approach described here allows us to determine whether this effect is due primarily to temperature-specific effects on the host or on its pathogen. Summary The structure of cursorial spider assemblages was examined along a gradient of four temperature successional communities. Species diversity (H), richness (S), and evenness (J) exhibited a dichotomy between herbaceous and woody communities rather than a progressive change with community age: all three parameters were higher in the two younger fields than in the two older woodlands, which is contrary to conventional successional theory. Species importance curves were steeper in the two woody communities. The breadth of the distribution of adult body lengths was greater in the two herbaceous communities. Indices of community similarity revealed neither a successional trend nor the vegetative dichotomy. We suggest the hypothesis that habitat structure is a more important determinant of cursorial spider diversity than successional age per se, and that the switch in dominance from herbaceous to woody vegetation is the critical change. We further suggest that competition for prey is more important to cursorial spiders in early successional (herbaceous) communities, because of a switch in the limiting resource from prey in these communities to the amount of accumulating litter (a spatial resource) in older woody stands. This may explain the greater variation in adult body size of these generalist predators in the two younger communities.  相似文献

We focused on land units as landscape characteristics and selected seven typical land units on a land catena comprising two areas of southern Mongolia. Hierarchical analysis was used to test the hypothesis that a land unit’s edaphic factors could explain the differences in vegetation responses to grazing. We established the survey sites at increasing distances from a livestock camp or water point within each land unit, then analysed patterns of change in floristic and functional compositions, vegetation volume and soil properties within each land unit to reveal differences in vegetation responses to grazing. We also examined the variations in floristic and functional compositions across land units to identify the edaphic factors that may underlie these differences. Changes in vegetation and soil properties at increasing distances from a camp or water point within each land unit were into three different patterns. Ordination techniques consistently indicated that land unit groups categorised using edaphic factors corresponded to those categorised using response patterns. Our study revealed that edaphic factors were responsible for the observed landscape-scale differences in vegetation responses to grazing in the study areas. In addition, the mechanisms underlying vegetation responses to grazing may have been primarily determined by edaphic factors.  相似文献

Question: How variable is the pioneer plant community on glacier forelands in southern Norway, both in terms of species composition and geographical distribution? Location: The Jotunheim and Jostedalsbreen regions of southern Norway (61°‐62°N, 6°‐9°E). Methods: The relative frequencies of vascular plant species were recorded in the pioneer zones of 43 glacier forelands, with an altitudinal range of 80‐1860 m (boreal to high alpine) and an east‐west range of 100 km. Classification and ordination techniques were used to search for evidence of consistently recurring communities, variability along a continuum or stochasticity. Results: Mean variability in species composition between all glacier forelands sampled was 65% (Sørensen dissimilarity). Poa alpina, Oxyria digyna, Deschampsia alpina and Festuca ovina had the highest frequency, occurring on over 80% of forelands. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling did not reveal clear divisions between groups of sites, but cluster analysis, multi‐response permutation procedures and indicator species analysis suggested two sub‐communities: the Saxifraga cespitosa‐Trisetum spicatum sub‐community is restricted to forelands above 1100 m in the Jotunheim region; whereas the D. alpina‐O. digyna sub‐community has a wider altitudinal range of 80‐1780 m. Variance partitioning indicated that altitude alone accounts for 24%, distance east for 18%, and the component shared by altitude and distance east for 17% of the variance in species composition. Conclusions: At the broadest scale, pioneer vegetation on the glacier forelands can be viewed as a single P. alpina‐O. digyna community of predominantly wind‐ and water‐dispersed perennials. However, this community shows a high degree of variability, with dominant species missing from a number of sites, and is poorly structured, suggesting a degree of stochasticity. Furthermore, the pioneer vegetation can be dissected within a continuum of variation to produce two emerging sub‐communities, reflecting the influence of environmental factors and, possibly, early successional development within the pioneer zone. Variance partitioning indicates that altitudinal and continentality gradients are important in accounting for a significant proportion of the variability within this dataset.  相似文献
