The mechanisms underlying differential prey selection of two microcrustaceans by the common bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) were studied in the laboratory. Functional response experiments with single prey showed that Utricularia had a higher attack rate coefficient and a longer handling time coefficient with the cladoceran Polyphemus pediculus than with the cyclopoid copepod Eucyclops serrulatus. Observation of predation rate, defined as number of prey eaten per unit time, from direct behavioural observation on single prey species, showed a higher predation rate with Polyphemus than on Eucyclops, at low prey densities. The opposite pattern was found at high prey density. When the two prey were presented simultaneously to the predator, Eucyclops was preferred over Polyphemus. Results from the situation with two prey and some of the results from the direct behavioural observations support field data on the diet of Utricularia, which shows that cyclopoid copepods are selected more frequently than Polyphemus.  相似文献

In the shallow and eutrophic subtropical aquatic ecosystems, which it generally inhabits, the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides encounters a wide variety of animal prey types including ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans. We studied prey selectivity in laboratory-reared adult females of this species given a choice of (i) prey types belonging to different taxa (ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and cyclopoid nauplii), and (ii) different prey species within a taxonomic group differing in body size, morphology or behaviour. We also tested the effect of different proportions of prey species on its selectivity. Prey type proportion had no significant effect on selectivity of the copepod, nor was there any evidence of switching based on the relative abundance of prey. Among the ciliate prey species tested, the largest species, Stylonychia mytilus was positively selected regardless of its relative abundance, while the smallest, S. notophora was selected only when its density was higher. Offered a choice of three species of a brachionid rotifer differing in size, the copepod selected the largest of them, Brachionus calyciflorus, and avoided the smallest B. angularis. The evasive rotifer Hexarthra mira was also avoided. When prey choice included three cladoceran species Daphnia similoides, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, the copepod selected the intermediate-sized M. macrocopa regardless of the abundance of the other two species. Although it fed on Mesocyclops nauplii when there was no choice, M. thermocyclopoides avoided them when alternative food was available. In a multispecies prey choice test, the copepod selected predominantly the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa. We suggest that the prey selectivity patterns shown by M. thermocyclopoides are adaptive in that they lead to ingestion of the most profitable prey.  相似文献

Functional responses of five cyprinid species to planktonic prey   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis The functional responses of five species of cyprinids (Chalcalburnus chalcoides, Vimba vimba, Abramis brama, Rutilus rutilus, and Scardinius erythrophthalmus) feeding on four planktonic prey types were measured in the laboratory. Although no alternative prey types were present, the response curves were sigmoid in most cases, because attack rates were not independent of prey density. The findings are explained as being the overt expression of the fishes& foraging tactics. The chief way of maximizing food uptake, according to our interpretation, is accelerating attack rates with increasing prey density. The ability of prey to escape or relative prey size may interfere with this strategy. C. chalcoides, the only obligatory planktivore among the species studied, attacks at higher rates and responds most markedly to changes in prey density.  相似文献

Invertebrate predators may cause strong changes in behaviour, life-history, and morphology of prey species. However, little is known about the influence of jellyfish on such characteristics of their prey. This study analyses the impacts of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii on life history and morphological defenses in a population of the cladoceran Bosmina longirostris . Length of mucro and antennule, size-dependent number of eggs, size at maturity, and size of juveniles, adults, and egg-carrying females were investigated during a 23 days experiment using medusae-enriched and control enclosures filled with natural plankton populations. Significant differences in parameters investigated were found not only between treatments, but also within treatments over time. Changes in Bosmina life-history parameters and morphology in controls were probably due to predation by cyclopoid copepods. The significant increase in the size of adults and egg-carrying females as well as the increase in mucro and antennule length in medusae-enriched enclosures are discussed as defense strategies against the freshwater jellyfish.  相似文献

Feeding by marine fish larvae: developmental and functional responses   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Synopsis The relationship between prey consumption rate and prey concentration (functional response), and its change with growth (developmental response) were examined in the laboratory for three species of marine fish larvae: bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli (Engraulidae), sea bream Archosargus rhomboidalis (Sparidae) and lined sole Achirus lineatus (Soleidae). The major objective was to determine relative predatory abilities of the larvae by fitting feeding rate data to developmental and functional response models. Feeding success, prey capture success, attack rates, handling times and search rates were estimated. Prey consumption rates and attack rates of bay anchovy usually were highest, but at the lowest prey level (50 per liter) first-feeding sea bream larvae had the highest consumption rate. Sea bream could consume prey at near-maximum rates at prey levels lower than those required by the other species. As larvae grew, time searching per attack decreased rapidly for all species, especially at low prey levels. Handling time also decreased, but most rapidly for bay anchovy. Search rates were highest for bay anchovy and lowest for lined sole. Bay anchovy had the best apparent predation ability, but when previous results on larval growth rates, survival rates and growth efficiencies were considered, sea bream larvae were the most efficient predators and the least likely of the three species to be limited by low prey levels.  相似文献

Ant-gardens represent a special type of association between ants and epiphytes. Frequently, two ant species can share the same nest in a phenomenon known as ‘parabiosis’, but the exact nature (i.e., mutualistic or parasitic) of this interaction is the subject of debate. We thus attempted to clarify the mutual costs and benefits for each partner (ants and plants) in the Crematogaster levior/Camponotus femoratus ant-garden parabiosis. The ants’ response to experimental foliar damage to the epiphytes and to the host tree as well as their behavior and interactions during prey capture were investigated to see if the purported parasitic status of Cr. levior could be demonstrated in either the ant-ant or in the ant-plant interactions. The results show that both species take part in protecting the epiphytes, refuting the role of Cr. levior as a parasite of the ant-garden mutualism. During capture of large prey Ca. femoratus took advantage from the ability of Cr. levior to discover prey; by following Cr. levior trails Ca. femoratus workers discover the prey in turn and usurp them during agonistic interactions. Nevertheless, the trade-off between the costs and benefits of this association seems then to be favorable to both species because it is known that Cr. levior benefits from Ca. femoratus building the common carton nests and furnishing protection from vertebrates. Consequently, parabiosis can then be defined as the only mutualistic association existing between ant species, at least in ant-gardens. Summary Interspecific interactions were studied in three coexisting species of predatory semiaquatic insects: Gyrinus substriatus Steph. (Coleoptera), Gerris lacustris (L.) and Gerris argentatus Schumm. (Hemiptera). Prey capture success was observed in trials with individuals of two different species. Two prey sizes were used: fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster and Mediterranean flour moths Ephetia kuehniella (Zeller). When the two species were starved for the same period of time, G. substriatus was generally more successful at catching prey than either Gerris species, independent of prey size. However, when individuals from the formerly dominant species of the pair were less hungry (i.e. fed shortly before trials), their prey capture success decreased. Prey sharing and prey stealing were observed in trials with large prey and occurred both intra- and interspecifically. The shift in dominance with differing hunger levels and the existence of prey sharing and prey stealing may make the interspecific competition more symmetric allowing these species to coexist.  相似文献

Feeding selectivity and efficiency of young-of-the-year European perch and roach were compared under field and laboratory conditions. In laboratory experiments, the importance of prey evasiveness versus prey movement conspicuousness for fish selectivity was evaluated with respect to changing Cladocera/Copepoda prey ratio. Feeding efficiency was additionally investigated in relation to feeding time (5, 10, 20 min) and prey density (approx. 50, 200, 700 ind. L−1). In Říov Reservoir, the diet of both fish species was nearly exclusively composed of crustacean zooplankton. In roach, diet shifted from rotifers and bosminids in May, towards Daphnia sp. and Leptodora kindtii in June and July. Daphnia contributed almost exclusively to the roach diet since June, composing on average more than 94% of total prey. Cyclopoid copepods, occurred in the roach’s diet only on the first sampling date; later on both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods were completely absent. On the other hand, copepods played an important role in the diet of perch. In early and mid-June when their share in the zooplankton was particularly high, copepods contributed by more than 50% to the diet of perch. Although their contribution dropped with their decline in zooplankton in June/July, by the end of July they again comprised about one third of perch’s diet. In both fish species, the increase in numbers of cladocerans in their diet was related to increase in SL. In roach, the numbers of consumed prey were doubled every twenty days during the investigated period. In perch the increase was not so consistent, but significantly higher efficiency of perch was reported on three out of six sampling dates. In laboratory experiments, roach showed a distinct avoidance for copepods and a preference for cladocerans. Both prey categories were only fed non-selectively when they dominated the prey mixture. Perch selectivity was more diversified. Contrary to roach, perch were fed copepods non-selectively on a balanced prey ratio. Further, with an increasing share of Cladocera, a situation resembling that of roach and Copepoda was avoided. However, when the share of copepods in the prey mixture dropped below ten percent, they were consumed non-selectively and with their ongoing decline in the prey mixture their preference even increased. Feeding efficiency differed significantly between perch and roach when foraging on copepods exclusively or on a prey mixture where copepods predominated. In the short time feeding experiment (5 min) with copepods, perch consumed on average 5.9 times more prey than roach. Although roach increased their success with increasing time it was still 1.7 times greater than for perch in the long time feeding experiment (20 min). Total numbers of prey consumed were positively affected by prey density and feeding time. With increasing feeding time, the consumption rate generally declined. With a fourfold increase in feeding time, the numbers of consumed prey increased on average only two times. Only in roach feeding on copepods did the numbers of prey consumed per minute of feeding increase with increasing feeding time. However, the overall numbers were low. Differences in feeding selectivity and efficiency between perch and roach juveniles were found to be significant both in the field and laboratory experiments. In roach, selectivity was determined solely by prey evasiveness. By contrast, perch’s selectivity was influenced by prey movement conspicuousness; prey escape abilities did not play an important role. Perch were more efficient foragers on evasive prey, but its feeding efficiency for non-evasive prey was not lower than that of roach. According to our observations, we suggest feeding behaviour to be responsible for the roach’s inefficiency in capturing evasive copepods.  相似文献

When populations of native predators are subsidized by numerically dominant introduced species, the structure of food webs can be greatly altered. Surprisingly little is known, however, about the general factors that influence whether or not native predators consume introduced species. To learn more about this issue, we examined how native pit-building ant lions (Myrmeleon) are affected by Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) invasions in coastal southern California. Compared to areas without L. humile, invaded areas contained few native ant species and were deficient in medium-sized and large bodied native ants. Based on these differences, we predicted that Argentine ants would negatively affect ant lion larvae. Contrary to this expectation, observational surveys and laboratory growth rate experiments revealed that Myrmeleon were heavier, had longer mandibles, and grew more quickly when their main ant prey were Argentine ants rather than native ants. Moreover, a field transplant experiment indicated that growth rates and pupal weights were not statistically different for larval ant lions reared in invaded areas compared to those reared in uninvaded areas. Argentine ants were also highly susceptible to capture by larval Myrmeleon. The species-level traits that presumably make Argentine ant workers susceptible to capture by larval ant lions—small size and high activity levels—appear to be the same characteristics that make them unsuitable prey for vertebrate predators, such as horned lizards. These results underscore the difficulties in predicting whether or not numerically dominant introduced species serve as prey for native predators.  相似文献

Prey selectivity of Piona exigua,a planktonic water mite   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Females, males and nymphs of Piona exigua were observed during prey capture and ingestion. The encounter radius of the mite was very small, allowing the escape of some crustaceans, such as the calanoid copepod Boeckella. Cladocerans, such as Bosmina or Chydorus, with little or no pre-contact escape response were the most vulnerable to mite predation. Preference values in size-selection experiments varied widely between individual mites. Adult mites presented with two sizes of Daphnia carinata generally preferred the smaller prey. When four sizes were presented simultaneously, however, the preferences of female mites for each size were not significantly different. Patterns of prey selection varied with predator age and sex; for example, female mites preferred Daphnia to Simocephalus, Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus, while nymphs showed a strong preference for Chydorus over Ceriodaphnia. When two prey types were present in equal proportions, differences in total prey density (range 5 or 10/1 – 30 or 50/1) did not alter preferences between the prey species. The preference of female mites for a particular prey type generally increased with increasing relative abundance of the prey type in each of three experiments (Daphnia: Ceriodaphnia, Ceriodaphnia: Chydorus, and Daphnia: Simocephalus). These results imply switching behaviour in these mites. Our results indicate the value of direct observation of predatory behaviour as an adjunct to prey selection experiments. It is also apparent that predatory behaviour in the presence of more than one prey type may not be predictable from that observed in single-prey situations. Predation rates on particular prey species were sometimes reduced in the presence of another species. The relative proportions of prey eaten when two species were present could not be predicted from the number of each species eaten when they were presented separately.  相似文献

The generation time of the predatory cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops robustus was estimated on 11 occasions during the years 1980 to 1982 in Alderfen Broad. In a multiple regression model, generation time was found to be uncorrelated with temperature, positively correlated (p < 0.05) with the densities of Bosmina longirostris and rotifers, and negatively correlated (p < 0.001) with the density of nauplii of the calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis. It is suggested that generation time was determined largely by the availability of calanoid nauplii as prey, even though these constituted only 2% of zooplankton standing biomass.  相似文献

Synopsis Individual mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, can adopt a broad range of attack selectivities. In part, this variation can be explained by the past experiences of a fish. Individuals selected the more profitable Ceriodaphnia dubia (Cladocera) over less profitable cyclopoid copepods to a greater degree after being exposed to both prey types than did individuals experienced with only one of the prey types. Feeding rate (biomass ingested per unit time) declined with increased attack specialization on the profitable prey (Ceriodaphnia) when such prey were scarce, a result in agreement with assumptions of optimal diet theory. When profitable prey were abundant feeding rate was a bimodal function of the intensity of specialization on profitable prey; fish that specialized on cyclopoid copepods (the less profitable prey type) fed at higher rates than did generalists. This may be the result of antagonistic learning that precluded feeding efficiently on more than one type of prey at a time. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that rejection of unsuitable prey involves a time cost. The two preceeding aspects of foraging behavior, which are absent from most optimal diet models, could lead to failure in predicting the attack specialization of some predators, An additional aspect of the results was the generally weak relationship between feeding efficiency and specialization behavior. This suggests that feeding rate may not have been as tightly linked to the specialization behavior a predator adopts as is assumed by current foraging theory.  相似文献

In many shallow, eutrophic subtropical ponds, brachionid rotifers are common prey of the predatory copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides. The predatory rotifer Asplanchna intermedia, which is itself a potential prey of the copepod, also feeds preferentially on brachionids. We studied in the laboratory the population dynamics of two mutually competing prey species, Brachionus angularis and B. calyciflorus, in the presence of the two predators A. intermedia and M. thermocyclopoides. The experimental design included separate population dynamics studies with one prey–one predator, two prey–one predator, one prey–two predator, and two prey–two predator systems. These combinations were compared with controls, in which both the prey species (B. angularis and B. calyciflorus) were grown separately and in combination with each other. In the absence of any predator, B. angularis generally eliminated the larger B. calyciflorus. Selective predation by the copepod allowed B. calyciflorus to persist longer in competition with B. angularis. Feeding by M. thermocyclopoides on A. intermedia reduced the predation pressure on B. calyciflorus. However, given enough time, the cyclopoid copepod was able to eliminate both the brachionids as well as the predatory Asplanchna.  相似文献

Searching behavior of the predaceous insect Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was investigated in the laboratory to verify assumptions made in a predator search model. Female predators were placed into an arena containing 30 lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus L.), each having five numbered leaflets. Prey were third-instar larvae of Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis Mulsant) at two densities. Predators were observed for 4 h periods as they searched the plant canopy. Results showed that predators searched a greater area and for longer at low prey density than at high prey density. Predators apparently searched plants without using cues, did not search areas of the canopy repeatedly after attacks, and spent approximately 1 h handling prey. Predators spent more time resting than searching, and attack rates were negatively correlated with rest time, but were not correlated with search time. Long resting periods by predators may be a result of energy conservation. The implications for using predators such as P. maculiventris against pests in crops are (i) the predators' searching behavior limits the number of prey attacked, and (ii) the predator may be able to persist at low prey densities better than species with different searching behaviors.  相似文献

Vendace (Coregonus albula, L.) is in the southern part of its distribution area during the summer period restricted to hypolimnion. Food is dominated by Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia sp. The selectivity index is highest for large cladocerans and large copepods. The pelagic crustacean fauna in vendace lakes is dominated by small species like Bosmina coregoni, Daphnia cristata, Thermocyclops and Mesocyclops sp. and Eudiaptomus sp. During periods of maximum vendace abundance only Bosmina coregoni is left of the cladocerans, while the abundance of cyclopoid copepods increases.  相似文献

Observations were made on the feeding behavior of the two main phytoseiid species in Spanish Citrus orchards,Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-henriot. The experiences were carried out by rearing the predatory mites on excised orange leaves, and always with an excess of the prey the Citrus Red Mite (=CRM)Panonychus citri (McGregor). In experiments with all stages of CRM, the number of prey killed per hour was 5.12 and 2.00, the percentage of successful attacks, 58% and 21%, and the mean time spent feeding on each prey was 5.1 and 12.2 minutes for starving females ofE. stipulatus andT. phialatus respectively.E. stipulatus feeds on all stages of the prey except eggs, andT. philatus, on all stages, except males. Both species attack much less successfully females ofP. citri rather than immatures. In experiments with adult females and eggs ofP. citri as prey, the mean number of prey killed daily was 4.51 females forE. stipulatus, and 2.01 females and 2.12 eggs forT. philatus. Considering this killing rate and the number of eggs laid by the predators in the same period, it can be concluded thatE. stipulatus consumes only 30% of the content of the preys killed, whereasT. philatus consumes a percentage of prey variable between individuals and ranging from 40% to 100%. These differences in feeding behavior between the two species could partly explain differences in their efficiency as biocontrol agents ofP. citri observed in the field.   相似文献

Short term experiments on calanoid-cyclopoid-phytoplankton interactions   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
To investigate their potential effects on each other in nature, calanoid (Diaptomus clavipes and D. siciloides) and cyclopoid (Acanthocyclops vernalis and Mesocyclops edax) copepod populations were manipulated in 5 liter aquaria in laboratory experiments of 20–60 days duration. Diaptomus generally had a strongly negative effect on both cyclopoid species. The cyclopoids established populations more successfully when introduced to aquaria before calanoids than they did when calanoids were already present. On the other hand, whether introduced earlier or later than the cyclopoids, Diaptomus populations were unaffected by Acanthocyclops and were strongly depressed by Mesocyclops. Diaptomus effects on the phytoplankton were often strong but varied markedly among experiments. They included reduction of populations of edible algae, such as Chlamydomonas, which are essential for both calanoid and cyclopoid nauplii, and large increases in inedible algae, such as Kirchneriella. Feeding experiments revealed that under conditions of food scarcity Acanthocyclops nauplii survived less well than did Diaptomus nauplii. Competition for edible phytoplankton seemed to be a key factor in the calanoid-cyclopoid interactions, since the survival of herbivorous cyclopoid larvae determined the abundance of the predaceous adults. This indicates that the competitive effects of calanoids on cyclopoids often may exceed the predative effects of cyclopoids on calanoids.  相似文献

Synopsis We compared survival, growth, and swimming performance of two size classes of age-0 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, in the spring after being fed diets of bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, or invertebrate prey during the winter. Regardless of prey assemblage, survival was uniformly high and independent of size. Length, wet- and dry-mass, and condition was also similar among treatments for both size classes. However, variation in individual performance differed, with the lowest variability in growth occurring among small age-0 largemouth bass in the invertebrate only treatment. Absolute and length corrected swimming speeds of largemouth bass were highest for invertebrate prey assemblages, intermediate for fathead minnow prey, and lowest for bluegill prey. The patterns in growth and spring swimming performance likely reflect the varied nutritive quality of different prey, the ability of largemouth bass to capture different prey, and competition with the piscine prey.  相似文献

Summary Increased prey capture efficiency in colonial spiders is a consequence of the ricochet effect, as prey are captured after they bounce off several webs in succession. In this study, the prey capture of three species of colonial spiders in the genus Metepeira from Mexico are compared. These species, from different habitats, show varying levels of social organization (group size and withingroup spacing) that affect prey capture from ricochets. Metepeira sp. a (a presumed new species tentatively named atascadero) from desert grassland habitats, occur solitarily or in small groups, and gain little from prey ricochets: prey capture rates are low and variance in prey captured/spider is high. M. spinipes, from mesic agricultural sites, occur in groups of 10–150, and show a ricochet effect resulting in more and larger prey, and reduced variance in capture rate. M. incrassata, from tropical rainforest/agricultural sites, occur in large colonies of hundreds to thousands of individuals, and show a similar ricochet effect. The ricochet effect does not influence taxonomic composition of prey in either M. atascadero or M. spinipes, but does in tropical M. incrassata. This result, however, is primarily due to the capacity of certain taxa (eg., Lepidoptera), more common in the tropics, to escape more easily from spider webs. A comparison of prey capture efficiency of colonial M. incrassata with that of solitary M. atascadero shows that the ricochet effect provides an increase in efficiency across all size classes of prey.  相似文献

The Biodegradation capabilities of six selected cyanobacterial species for fluometuron, a phenylurea herbicide, as well as its inhibitory effect on chlorophyll a content were investigated. The selected species (three strains of Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena cylindrica, A. flos-aquae and A. spiroides) were subjected to three elevated concentrations of fluometuron (0.14, 0.7 and 1.4 mg/ml) for different exposure times (1–5 days). Results revealed that biodegradation of fluometuron is species-dependent and positively correlated with the exposure time, reaching maximum efficiency after 5 days at all the investigated concentrations. All the species tested showed generally great ability to degrade the compound even at the highest concentration with specific variations among them. Biodegradation efficiencies of fluometuron by the selected species were in the following ranges; 39.2–99.9; 87.5–100; and 93.2–100 at 0.14; 0.7 and 1.4 mg fluometuron/ml respectively. It was noticed that the gradual increase in the pesticide concentration enhances its biodegradability by the selected algal species. Variations according to species as well as exposure time were discussed. The highest fluometuron concentration (1.4 mg/l) showed the highest inhibition of chlorophyll a content in the tested species and toxicity was also species- and time-dependent.  相似文献
