The Bangia phase of Bangia fuscopurpurea was grown in laboratory culture in a variety of photoperiod and temperature regimes. Plants of the Bangia phase grown from 2 types of asexual spores, monospores and conchospores, exhibited growth differences under similar growing conditions. Plants derived from monospores grew more rapidly and matured earlier than those derived from carpospores. Day length and temperature were found to significantly influence growth rule, maturation, and plant size. Long day lengths resulted in more rapid growth in filament length and diameter and earlier spore formation and spore release. Maximum filament length was observed in a 12/12 hr light-dark cycle at 15 C. Spore formation and release were delayed by decreasing day length or temperature. Temperature and photoperiod were also found to influence the type of spores produced by the Bangia phase. When grown at 22 C, the Bangia phase produced only monospores, which reproduced the Bangia phase. At 9 C, with photoperiods of 11 hr or more of light, the Bangia phase produced carpospores which gave rise to the alternating Conchocelis phase. The conditions under which sporogenesis occurred determined the spore type differentiated.  相似文献

Alpha-spores of the intertidal Porphyra schizophylla Hollenberg f. norrisii Mumford appear able to tolerate environmental stress factors associated with intertidal habitats, (viz., drying of water films with salt crystal formation, increased salt concentrations in the surrounding water, exposure to humid air when spores are enclosed in water films), and to produce Conchocelis filaments of normal appearance when subsequently germinated in sea water cultures. Tolerances of lowered salinities were observed down to 17.4%., but little survival at salinities lower than this. Alpha-spore germination on thalli of intertidal macro-algae was observed, with initial penetration in some cases. Penetrations of algal thalli were observed with Conchocelis filaments of α-spores germinated on red algae from low intertidal and subtidal habitats. Cell recognition phenomena would seem to be involved in these growth responses.  相似文献

Morphological observations confirm the presence of only three species of the Bangiaceae (Rhodophyta) in warm temperate waters of eastern Australia: Bangia atropurpurea, Porphyra columbina and Porphyra denti-culata. Analyses of DNA sequence data from the inter-generic spacer region between the large- and small-sub-unit ribulose-l,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase gene (rbcL and rbcS, respectively) and portions of the flanking regions, confirm these taxonomic conclusions for the two Porphyra species: there is clear sequence divergence between the two species, and strong genetic similarity between P. columbina isolates over a wide geographical region. Sequence analyses also reveal a strong similarity between Bangia isolates over a wide geographical range, but the taxonomy of B. atropurpurea may need to be re-examined in light of sequence differences between these and northern hemisphere isolates of B. atropurpurea. Molecular analyses support the view that Bangia and Porphyra species are sufficiently closely related to be placed in a single genus.  相似文献

The salinity responses of marine and freshwater Bangia have been studied in laboratory culture. Although both isolates possessed salinity tolerances which were dependent upon the salinity regimes of their original habitats, neither was restricted in its salinity tolerances to that salinity range alone. The marine isolate was able to proliferate after a single step transfer into a freshwater-based medium. Certain cells within the thallus appeared to be resistant to the sudden decrease in salinity and these developed into dwarf plantlets, following a period of dormancy. An hypothesis is proposed that Bangia occurring in freshwater is a well-adapted ecotype of the marine form, thus supporting the conspecific theory.  相似文献

Given their rapid growth and nutrient assimilation rates, Porphyra spp. are good candidates for bioremediation. The production potential of two northeast U.S. Porphyra species currently in culture (P. purpurea and P. umbilicalis) was evaluated by measuring rates of photosynthesis (as O2 evolution) of samples grown at 20° C. Gametophytes of P. umbilicalis photosynthesized at rates that were 80% higher than those of P. purpurea over 5–20° C at both sub‐saturating and saturating irradiances (37 and 289 μmol photons m?2 s?1). Porphyra umbilicalis was both more efficient at low irradiances (higher alpha) and had a higher Pmax than did P. purpurea (23.0 vs. 15.6 μmol O2 g?1 DW min?1), suggesting that P. umbilicalis is a better choice for mass culture where self‐shading may be severe. The photosynthesis‐irradiance relationship for the Conchocelis stage of P. purpurea was also examined. Tufts of filaments, grown at 10, 15, and 20° C, were assayed at growth temperatures at irradiances ranging from 0–315 μmol photons m?2 s?1. Tufts were slightly more productive at 15° than at 10° C, but only ca. 4–6% as productive as gametophytes. Maximum rates of net photosynthesis were reduced by 66–74% in tufts grown at 20° C (only about 2% of gametophytes). The Conchocelis stage, however, need not limit mariculture operations; once Conchocelis cultures are established, they can be maintained over the long‐term as ready sources of spores for net seeding.  相似文献

As the first step in an investigation of the life-history ofPorphyra umbilicalis (L.) Kütz. var. laciniata (Lightf.)J. Ag., spores which have originated as a result of the repeateddivision of the mother-cells have been germinated. When grownon glass their method of germination and growth agrees withthat described by previous investigators, but when germinatedon sterile shell the germ-tubes penetrate the shell and developinto growths identical with Conchocelis rosea Batters. This‘species’, therefore, is a phase in the life-historyof P. umbilicalis var. laciniata and not an autonomous species. The development of the ‘Conchocelis’-phase in cultureis described and also the formation of fertile cell-rows and‘plantlets’. Until the significance of these structuresis understood and a cytological investigation completed, therelationship of the intertidal leafy Porphyra-thallua to thefilamentous, shell-inhabiting, deep-water Conchocelis cannotbe expressed in the terms usually employed to denote the variousphases of the life-histories of algae.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the Conchocelis or filamentous stage of Porphyra leucosticta was investigated. Each cell contains 1 or 2 parietal, stellate chloroplasts with a single pyrenoid in each chloroplast. The centrally located nucleus is irregularly shaped and contains 1–2 nucleoli. The cytoplasm has typical floridean starch grains and nonmernbrane-bound lipid bodies. The cell wall is divided into an outer and an inner wall. Many lomasomes are associated with the cell membrane. Pit connections are found between cells, and their taxonomic significance is discussed.  相似文献

Chromosome number and morphology as well as reproductive seasonally were examined in Bangia populations collected from 88 sites along the British Columbia coasts. Sexual filaments were recorded at 35 sites and asexual filaments at 58. Four different types of Bangia were determined. These were characterized by reproductive state and chromosome number, as well as by their seasonally and range of distribution. A summer-fall three-chromosome sexual type occurred from approximately 50° N northward and a winter-spring four-chromosome sexual type had a northerly limit of approximately 54° N, extending to the southernmost areas of British Columbia. Two asexual types occurred, exhibiting little seasonally, six-chromosome populations throughout the coast and three-chromosome populations at three southerly sites only. Karyograms were prepared for the four chromosomal types, assigning tentative centromere locations. Somatic chromosome pairing was reported for the first time in the Rhodophyta.  相似文献

Ontogenesis and reproduction of the Helgolandian taxa of the Erythropeltidaceae have been studied. In all species monospores are only produced from differentiated sporangia. FilamentousConchocelis-like stages have not been observed. Sexual reproduction was formerly demonstrated in the heteromorphous genusErythrotrichopeltis (Kornmann, 1984). Based on these features a revised classification for the family is presented.Porphyropsis imperfecta, a new species, is a widespread epiphyte in sublittoral habitats.  相似文献

Olpidiopsis porphyrae sp. nov., a marine oomycete endoparasite that infects the commercially cultivated red alga Porphyra yezoensis, is described and its phylogenetic position based on molecular data and ultrastructural morphology is discussed. O. porphyrae infects the host Porphyra by means of encysted zoospores. Spherical-shaped holocarpic thalli develop within the cytoplasm of its algal host, which produce monoplanetic, subapically biflagellate zoospores. The characteristic features of this isolate are the ellipsoidal, unicellular thallus and simple holocarpic zoosporangial development, which show morphological similarity with the genus Olpidiopsis. Laboratory infection experiments with a wide range of green, brown, and red algae revealed that O. porphyrae infects several stages of the bangialean red algae (the genera Bangia and Porphyra). Molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from both SSU rRNA and cox2 genes showed O. porphyrae branched before the main saprolegnian and peronosporalean lineages within the monophyletic oomycete clade, indicating its phylogenetic separation from them. A single or double K-body-like organelle, which contains tubular inclusions, is found located to one side of the zoospore nucleus and shows similarities to homologous organelles previously described in O. saprolegniae. The ultrastructural morphology of O. porphyrae with zoospore initials containing K-bodies and tubular mitochondrial cristae is characteristic of oomycetes. Group I intron-like multiple insertions were found in the SSU rRNA gene of O. porphyrae. This is the first report of SSU group I introns in the class Oomycetes.  相似文献

This study examines microendolithic community patterns in experimental carbonate blocks in shallow waters between 0 m and 30 m adjacent to Eilat, Israel. We set up two different habitats per depth: one in full light and one shaded. After 6 months of exposure we observed 23 species of which five are unknown to science and herein described as forms. Differences in community patterns between open and shaded habitats were clearly visible at 0 m, indistinct between 6 m and 15 m and indiscernible at 30 m. Three modern producers of key ichnotaxa were confirmed in our experiments within their paleobathymetrical range: Hyella balani (Fascichnus acinosus), Conchocelis (Palaeoconchocelis starmachii), and Ostreobium quekettii (Ichnoreticulina elegans). For Fascichnus dactylus we found six possible producers. We dismiss Scolecia filosa, Eurygonum nodosum and Rhopalia catenata as potential key ichnotaxa because of the broad bathymetrical range of their producers.  相似文献

The color mutations in Bangiaceae were investigated by treating the blades, conchocelis and conchospores phase of Bangia sp., Porphyra yezoensis, and P. haitanensis sampled in China with mutagen N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). A high percentage of mutation in different expression characteristics in all three phases were shown within optimum mutagen concentrations. Among mutagenized blades, mutations occurred on single cells, which is a direct outcome of mutation of haploid cells. The mutation of mutagenized conchocelis resulted in a two-step process: low-level expression in conchocelis phase, and high-level expression in progeny, explaining that mutation took place in diploid cells. The mutations of conchospores were expressed immediately at germination of spores, indicating a change in ploidy. This paper reports the process of meiosis and its effect on frond development, and the relation between color mutations and morphological characteristics expressed by mutations in Bangiaceae.  相似文献

A phosphotungstic acid-chromic acid mixture selectively stains the plasma membrane of whole cells of selected members of the Chlorophyceae, Charophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Rhodophyceae, and the plasma membrane in cell-free fractions of Mougeotia (Chlorophyceae). The procedure is not effective on the plasma membrane of the cyanophycean Scytonema or the cyanophycean endosymbiont of Glaucocystis. Staining of the cell walls of Chlamydomonas, Bangia, and Scytonema and the pellicle and sliding junction of Euglena and Astasia suggest that PTA-CrO3 reactivity may be associated with glycoproteins in the cell walls and plasma membranes.  相似文献

A series of transects in the Firth of Clyde have shown that filaments of Conchocelis in shell substrata are always the deepest growing red algae. The abundance of calcareous material on the sea bed and its invariable association with the perennial Conchocellis filaments offers a reliable means of estimating photic limits. Some interactions of grazing molluscs with the shell-boring organism have been observed. Some of the pitfalls to be encountered in field determinationsof Conchocelis and its consequent use as an indicator organism are described.  相似文献

Müller et al. (1998) noted that freshwater collections of the genus Bangia formed a distinct group separate from marine entities in gene sequence analyses. Recently, the species epithet B. atropurpurea has been resurrected to represent this freshwater lineage. This taxon is one of many invasive species within the Laurentian Great Lakes. B. atropurpurea was first observed in Lake Erie in 1964 and by 1982 was observed in all of the Great lakes except Lake Superior. The present study was initiated to examine the further spread of B. atropurpurea and determine the origin of these populations. Hence, a survey of all the Great Lakes was conducted in 1995 (86 sites) and again in 2002 (104 sites). Bangia was observed at 43 sites in 1995 and 39 sites in 2002. For the first time, this alga has been observed to be present in the St. Lawrence River (1995), Georgian Bay on Lake Huron (2002) and Lake Simcoe (eastern shore, 2002) and hence this alga appears to be spreading into new locations. Cluster analyses of morphological data reveal three distinct groupings that do not separate according to location or lake basin. Preliminary analyses of ITS 1 and 2 sequences show differences among samples within Lake Ontario and among all Lakes; however, collections from Lake Simcoe are very similar in sequence. We are continuing to examine the relationship of Great Lakes populations with freshwater collections from Europe.  相似文献

The red algal order Bangiales has been revised as a result of detailed regional studies and the development of expert local knowledge of Bangiales floras, followed by collaborative global analyses based on wide taxon sampling and molecular analyses. Combined analyses of the nuclear SSU rRNA gene and the plastid RUBISCO LSU (rbcL) gene for 157 Bangiales taxa have been conducted. Fifteen genera of Bangiales, seven filamentous and eight foliose, are recognized. This classification includes five newly described and two resurrected genera. This revision constitutes a major change in understanding relationships and evolution in this order. The genus Porphyra is now restricted to five described species and a number of undescribed species. Other foliose taxa previously placed in Porphyra are now recognized to belong to the genera Boreophyllum gen. nov., Clymene gen. nov., Fuscifolium gen. nov., Lysithea gen. nov., Miuraea gen. nov., Pyropia, and Wildemania. Four of the seven filamentous genera recognized in our analyses already have generic names (Bangia, Dione, Minerva, and Pseudobangia), and are all currently monotypic. The unnamed filamentous genera are clearly composed of multiple species, and few of these species have names. Further research is required: the genus to which the marine taxon Bangia fuscopurpurea belongs is not known, and there are also a large number of species previously described as Porphyra for which nuclear SSU ribosomal RNA (nrSSU) or rbcL sequence data should be obtained so that they can be assigned to the appropriate genus.  相似文献

Interactions between a naturally-collected algal species and strains of bacteria with which it was closely associated were examined under controlled conditions. Three strains of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Flavobacterium, were isolated from Oscillatoria. These bacteria were grown in combination with axenic cultures of the Oscillatoria culture as well as with several additional algal species. Oscillatoria growth was stimulated by all of the bacteria, but other algal species varied in their response. Some were stimulated, but others were inhibited or unaffected by exposure to the bacterial strains. There were also observations indicating that some algae may be able to develop resistance to antagonistic bacteria. These data suggest that succession and dominance of individual algal species may be influenced by interactions with bacteria.  相似文献

Algal responses to nutrients, grazing by Helicopsyche borealis, and concurrent grazing by Helicopsyche and Baetis tricaudatus were examined in recirculating stream chambers. Alagl communities, dominated by Achnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, and Synedra ulna, were primarily phosphorus-limited. Algal populations responded after only 6 days of nutrient enrichment. Initially, both the adnate diatom Cocconeis and erect diatom Synedra showed positive response to nutrient enrichment. Accumulation of algal biomass between day 3 and 6 in the P enriched treatment was resulted primarily from the growth of Synedra, an overstory rosette-like diatom colony. Such a shift in dominant growth from adnate to erect diatoms is a general phenomenon in periphyton succession in the absence of disturbance. Algal species showed differential responses to an increase of Helicopsyche densities. The accrual rate of Achnanthes continuously decreased with increasing grazer densities. The accrual rates of both Cocconeis and Synedra declined but reached plateaus between medium and high grazing densities. Baetis effectively and exclusively depressed Synedra and had no significant impact on Cocconeis. After concurrent grazing, algal communities were mainly dominated by Cocconeis (approximately 80% of total algal biovolume). The grazer' s mouth structures, grazing efficiencies, and mobility may account for the differential effects of concurrent grazing on algal communities. Significant interactive effects of P and grazing by Helicopsyche indicated that both nutrient addition and grazing may exert significant impact on algal communities. However, grazing may have a much stronger effect on algae than nutrients. Our results indicate that enhancement of algal biomass by P was dampened by grazing activities and that P had no effect on algal biomass in the presence of grazers.  相似文献

The effects of algal mats on wintering wading bird distribution and behaviour were studied at two sites during 1998/99 to identify changes that occurred during the winter breakdown of the algal mat. Numbers of Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa did not increase as the algal mat reduced in extent but a significantly greater number of birds were observed in areas without algal cover than in areas with mats in most months. The use of clear spaces, created between the algal patches as the mat broke down, by Black-tailed Godwit increased across the winter. We suggest that algal mats may physically interfere with the deep probing action of this wader. In contrast, when algal mats were most dense in November 1998, significantly greater numbers of Redshank Tringa totanus were observed in algal areas at one site. Redshank appeared not to be deterred by algal cover and, at times, preferentially utilized the algal infauna as prey.  相似文献
