Simultaneous collections of drift and organisms moving either upstream or downstream in association with the substrate were made using a specially designed sampler. Samples were taken in a diel series along a transect across the study riffle of a Colorado foothills stream on six dates over an annual cycle. In addition to longitudinal movements, taxonomic composition and diel periodicity were evaluated. The insect-dominated fauna showed a net downstream displacement. Only the caddisflies Helicopsyche borealis and Hesperophylax occidentalis exhibited net upstream movement, primarily a result of low drift frequencies. The taxonomic composition of moving invertebrates differed from that of the benthos. Drift resembled downstream moving substrate-associated invertebrates in composition, but differed from that of the upstream directed fauna. Taxa collectively exhibited four types of diel patterns: 1) similar downstream (drift and substrate-associated movements) patterns, which generally differed from the upstream pattern; 2) similar benthic (upstream and downstream) patterns, which differed from that of drift; 3) aperiodic patterns; and 4) independent patterns for each type of directional movement. Analysis of size classes based on head capsule width for the mayfly Baetis tricaudatus showed significantly smaller size in stationary individuals compared with moving individuals in the population and revealed that nymphs moving during the day were smaller than those moving at night.  相似文献

The impact of clay discharges on benthic invertebrates was investigated by comparison of communities upstream and downstream of alluvial gold mining on 6 streams on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. Mean turbidity was increased by 7–154 NTU above background (mean 1.3–8.2 NTU) by the mine discharges during the 2 months before sampling. Patterns of increase in suspended solids (strongly correlated with turbidity, r=0.95) were similar. Invertebrates densities were significantly lower at all downstream sites, ranging from 9 to 45% (median 26%) of densities at matched upstream sites. Downstream densities as a proportion of those upstream were negatively correlated with the logarithm of the turbidity loading (r=–0.82, P<0.05). The densities of the common taxa were also generally lower downstream of mining. Taxonomic richness was significantly lower at downstream sites in the four streams receiving higher turbidity loads (mean turbidity increase = 23–154 NTU). Lower epilithon biomass and productivity, and degraded food quality at the downstream sites probably explain the lowered invertebrate densities. At some sites, reduced bed permeability and interstitial dissolved oxygen, and avoidance reactions of invertebrates (i.e., increased drift), may have also contributed to lower invertebrate densities.Formerly DSIR Marine and Freshwater.  相似文献

Some benthic invertebrates in streams make frequent, short journeys downstream in the water column (=drifting). In most streams there are larger numbers of invertebrates in the drift at night than during the day. We tested the hypothesis that nocturnal drifting is a response to avoid predation from fish that feed in the water column during the day. We surveyed diel patterns of drifting by nymphs of the mayfly Baetis coelestis in several streams containing (n=5) and lacking (n=7) populations of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Drifting was more nocturnal in the presence of trout (85% of daily drift occurred at night) than in their absence (50% of daily drift occurred at night). This shift in periodicity is due to reduced daytime drifting in streams with trout, because at a given nighttime drift density, the daytime drift density of B. coelestis was lower in streams occupied by trout than in troutless streams. Large size classes of B. coelestis were underrepresented in the daytime drift in trout streams compared to nighttime drift in trout streams, and to both day and night drift in troutless streams. Differences in daytime drift density between streams with and without trout were the result of differences in mayfly drift behaviour among streams because predation rates by trout were too low to significantly reduce densities of drifting B. coelestis. We tested for rapid (over 3 days) phenotypic responses to trout presence by adding trout in cages to three of the troutless streams. Nighttime drifting was unaffected by the addition of trout, but daytime drift densities were reduced by 28% below cages containing trout relative to control cages (lacking trout) placed upstream. Drift responses were measured 15 m downstream of the cages suggesting that mayflies detected trout using chemical cues. Overall, these data support the hypothesis that infrequent daytime drifting is an avoidance response to fish that feed in the water column during the day. Avoidance is more pronounced in large individuals and is, at least partially, a phenotypic response mediated by chemical cues.  相似文献

Live (i.e. rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the 0–1 cm layer of multiple core samples were examined at three contrasting sites in the northeast Atlantic as part of the Natural Environment Research Council Deep Ocean Benthic Boundary Layer (BENBO) Thematic Programme. Sites A (3600 m water depth) and C (1900 m) were located in the Rockall Trough while Site B (1100 m) was in the Hatton–Rockall Basin. Wet-sorting sediment residues (>125 m fraction) revealed more abundant (98–190 individuals/10 cm2) and diverse (71–99 species /27 cm2) assemblages than found previously in studies employing dry-sorting techniques. At all three sites, the assemblages were numerically dominated by delicate soft-bodied and agglutinated species, most of which are undescribed. Calcareous taxa formed a relatively small proportion of the assemblages (23% of individuals at Site B, 13% at Site C and 7% at Site A). Conversely, the agglutinated hormosinaceans (mainly Reophax species) became more prominent with increasing depth and accounted for 8% of the assemblage at Site B, 33% at Site C and 51% at Site A. Foraminifera represented 67–81% of the fauna in the samples and greatly outnumbered the metazoans. The assemblage at Site A has similarities with abyssal assemblages, while those at Sites B and C contain characteristic bathyal species. At Site B, Uvigerina peregrina and Melonis barleeanum are abundant, suggesting that there are high organic carbon inputs at this site. Reduced species diversity was observed at Site A following the spring phytodetritus bloom due to the presence of large numbers of juvenile Hoeglundina elegans, although it is not clear whether this species is responding to phytodetritus inputs.  相似文献

A total of 12277 benthic invertebrates were caught from November 1990 to October 1991 at the Mauerbach, a first to fourth order forest brook near Vienna, Austria, using a Surber sampler and a hand net. Five taxa comprised 96.6% of the catch: Diptera larvae (45.6%), Amphipoda (37.6%) and larvae of Ephemeroptera (6.4%), Plecoptera (5.3%) and Trichoptera (1.7%). Mean values of macrozoobenthos density ranged from 39514 specimens m−2 at upstream sampling site 5 in December to only 286 specimens m−2 at sampling site 3 in May, shortly after a severe flood. Based on benthic invertebrate population structure, sites 5 and 6 (situated near the source) were clearly separated from the downstream sites 1 to 4. At upstream sites, shredders comprised up to 71.7% of the total, whereas at downstream sites collectors were most abundant. In addition, the proportion of eucrenal species decreased from 12% at site 6 near the source to only 2% at site 1 near the mouth. Among the insect species studied in detail, most were univoltine except Ephemera danica (Ephemeroptera) and Sericostoma personatum (Trichoptera), which had a two-year life cycle.  相似文献

1. The importance of submerged wood (snags) as macroinvertebrate habitat was evaluated in the Pranjip-Creightons Creek system, a lowland stream system in northern Victoria. Snag surface area and biomass were measured at ten sites along the system. The first four upstream sites, located in the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges, and the next three sites, on the northern Victorian riverine plain, were affected by streambank erosion and high sediment loads and contained little instream wood. A further three sites (Sites 8, 9 and 10) downstream on the riverine plain were not as affected by erosion and possessed extensive stands of riparian river redgum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, which contributed large amounts of wood to the stream channel. 2. Wood quantities at Site 8 were less than at Sites 9 and 10 downstream where the density of riparian redgum was greater. At Sites 9 and 10, snag surface area per m2 of stream bed was 0.57–0.92m2 and 0.38–0.71m2 depending on discharge. Total snag biomass in the stream channel at the same sites was 26 and 41kg m?2, respectively. Redgum was important to macroinvertebrates as habitat, at one site contributing 25% of total macroinvertebrate densities and over 30% of total macroinvertebrate biomass m?2 of stream bed. 3. Estimations of nitrogen content and C:N ratios of decayed redgum were carried out to provide information on its putative nutritional quality to xylophagous macroinvertebrates. Decayed redgum wood has a comparatively high N content and therefore a low C:N ratio, but appeared to be unpalatable to most macroinvertebrates. Only two macroinvertebrate species, the chironomid larvae Stenochironomus sp. and Dicrotendipes sp., were found to consume decayed redgum.  相似文献

An aquatic biological survey was conducted in 1979–1980 to determine the effects of drainage from an active coal strip-mine on Trout Creek, in northwest Colorado, U.S.A. Sampling was conducted over four seasons at four stations for periphyton, benthic invertebrates and fish. Periphyton in Trout Creek changed in the relative abundance of algae divisions in no apparent relation to mining. Diatoms were the predominant division at all sites. Golden-brown algae were abundant in spring at the stations upstream and adjacent to the mine. Blue-green algae were relatively important at stations upstream and downstream of the mine in winter. Benthic invertebrates exhibited a progressive increase in density, biomass and number of taxa from the upstream station to the downstream station. Shannon-Wiener diversity index for bethic invertebrates decreased slightly downstream of mine drainage but remained indicative of a clean water community. Aquatic insects (especially Trichoptera) were the predominant invertebrates at all stations. Analysis of functional groups of benthic invertebrates revealed increased importance of collector species at the lower sites while shredders were most important upstream of the mine. Unlike the invertebrates, fish exhibited slightly lower biomass at the station adjacent to the mine. The decrease was due to fewer salmonids. However, salmonid density and biomass increased substantially at the station just downstream of the mine. Non-game species (suckers and minnows) increased in numbers downstream and were most abundant at the lowest station. This coal strip-mine had little discernable adverse effects on the periphyton and invertebrates of Trout Creek. Fish populations did not appear to be significantly affected by the mine. Apparently, the presence of settling ponds and a buffer zone of unmined land between the mine and the stream helped to minimize adverse effects.  相似文献

Drift samples collected at five sites in the upper catchment of the River Wye yielded 99 taxa (excluding Chironomidae and Simuliidae). Significantly fewer taxa were collected from a site on the impounded River Elan (W4) compared with nearby River Wye sites. Mean daily density of drifting macroinvertebrates ranged from 6.3 × 10-2 to 782.9 × 10-2m-3, with greatest densities during the summer months, and Ephemeroptera, Coleoptera and Diptera generally comprised the greatest proportion of animals collected. Chironomids formed a considerable proportion of collections at W4 and the relative abundance of ephemeropterans, coleopterans and trichopterans was generally significantly less at W4 than at other sites. Estimates of the total numbers of invertebrates drifting past each site varied from 8.3 × 103 to 1 373.1 × 103day-1. Total numbers drifting were significantly related to estimates of total benthic density and similar relationships were established for some major taxonomic groups and some species.  相似文献

  • 1 We conducted survey and transplant studies to determine whether colonization and residency on soft sediments by introduced, fouling mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and D. bugensis) were affected by physical disturbance, and whether Dreissena presence in turn influenced the diversity and population densities of other benthic invertebrates. Surveys revealed that colony density was typically higher at moderate depths than at shallower and greater ones. However, the largest, midsummer colonies and greatest coverage of sediments by mussels occurred at deeper sites.
  • 2 Disturbance of transplanted colonies varied by depth and colony size, with deeper and larger colonies experiencing the lowest destruction rates. Colony destruction rate was positively correlated with current velocity adjacent to the lakebed.
  • 3 Absence of mussel colonies at shallow sites was not determined by recruitment or substrate limitation, as recruit density was higher and sediment characteristics more suitable for postveliger settlement at shallow than at deeper sites. Rather, seasonal storms have much stronger effects in shallow than in deep water.
  • 4 Mussel residency on soft sediment has profound effects on invertebrate biodiversity. Invertebrate species (taxon) richness and total abundance were positively correlated with mussel colony area. Mussel‐sediment habitat supported between 462 and 703% more taxa, and between 202 and 335% more individuals (exclusive of Dreissena) than adjacent soft‐sediment lacking mussels.
  • 5 Results from this study illustrate that physical disturbance directly limits the distribution of mussels on soft sediments, and the diversity and abundance of other benthic invertebrates in consequence.

  • 1 Radio‐telemetry and mark‐recapture methods were used to study the summer movements of adult and juvenile white‐clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes from a wild population in a small braided stream, Dalton Beck, North Yorkshire, U.K. Radio‐transmitters were attached to the chelae of 18 large (> 35 mm carapace length) crayfish and individuals were subsequently located to within 0.15 m. Additionally a total of 888 crayfish were marked with carapace brands, and 83 were recaptured.
  • 2 Radio‐tracked crayfish exhibited significantly greater local activity at dusk (21.00–00.00) than at dawn (03.00–06.00), or during morning (09.00–12.00) and afternoon (15.00–18.00) monitoring periods.
  • 3 The greatest movements of radio‐tracked crayfish occurred within 2 days of release. After this time, periods of residence were interspersed by movements to new locations, interpreted as establishment of ephemeral home areas. It is suggested that the initial large movements were the result of a ‘fright response’ following capture.
  • 4 Movements varied widely between individuals, some moving more than 300 m in 10 days, while others showed little movement over an equivalent time period. Mean (±SE) daily movements were 4.6 ± 3.0 m for males and 1.5 ± 1.0 m for females. Although crayfish often used specific home sites for in excess of 7 days, displaced animals did not return to home sites.
  • 5 The total distances travelled and the mean distance travelled per day by individual radio‐tagged crayfish did not differ significantly between upstream or downstream directions or between males and females. This was also the case for marked crayfish used in mark‐recapture studies.
  • 6 Positive correlations between distance moved per day and size (carapace length) were found for downstream movements by male and female crayfish, but not for upstream movements.
  • 7 Some preliminary observations of the response of crayfish to flood events suggested that these could be catastrophic with two out of five tracked crayfish found dead after a high stream‐discharge event.

In contrast to the northern hemisphere where species of Chironomidae are usually the dominant benthic invertebrates in the coldest upper reaches of glacial streams, mayflies (Deleatidium spp.: Leptophlebiidae) predominate in equivalent conditions in New Zealand. We examined the life histories and annual production of Deleatidium spp. at two sites on the Matukituki River (South Island, New Zealand) and at three sites in its glacier-fed tributary, Rob Roy Stream. Mean annual water temperature at the five sites ranged from 2.1 to 7.0°C. Monthly sampling showed that mayfly populations were poorly synchronised at all sites but were probably univoltine. The large Deleatidium cornutum was the dominant mayfly species found at the upper sites (Sites 1 and 2) on Rob Roy Stream, whereas above the confluence with Matukituki River (Site 3) it co-existed with a complex of smaller species we refer to as D.angustum”. Deleatidiumangustum” also dominated at the Matukituki sites. Deleatidium production calculated for the five sites, assuming an 11-month nymphal life, ranged from 0.48 g dry weight/m2/year (Site 1) to 3.07 g dry weight/m2/year (Site 3). The values for D. cornutum at Sites 2 and 3 are high for a species of Deleatidium and reflect its large size. This species appears to be strongly adapted for growth at low temperatures. Climate change scenarios for New Zealand predict the gradual and ultimate loss of small South Island glaciers and a consequent warming of streams as runoff from rainfall and snow melt becomes more dominant in spring. As a result, suitable habitats will be lost for cold-water specialists such as D. cornutum, and they are likely to suffer reductions in their distributional range and local extinction. In contrast, species such as those in the D.angustum” complex may extend their ranges into streams formerly dominated by glacial meltwater. Periphyton and benthic invertebrates assemblages were studied at the confluence of two Rocky Mountain streams, Deer Creek and the Snake River near Montezuma, Colorado. Upstream from the confluence the Snake River is acidic and enriched in dissolved trace metals, while Deer Creek is a typical Rocky Mountain stream. In the Snake River, downstream from the confluence, the pH increases and hydrous metal oxides precipitate and cover the streambed. The algal and benthic invertebrate communities in the upstream reaches of the Snake River and in Deer Creek were very different. A liverwort, Scapania undulata var. undulata, was abundant in the Snake River, and although periphyton were very sparse, there were as many benthic invertebrates as in Deer Creek. Downstream from the confleunce, the precipitation of hydrous metal oxides greatly decreased the abundance of periphyton and benthic invertebrates. This study shows that in streams metal precipitates covering the streambed may have a more deleterious effect on stream communities than high metal-ion activities.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The invertebrate colonization of a man-made stream, Flugströmmen, in southern Sweden was monitored for 18 months in 1988 and 1989. Benthic samples were taken on twelve occasions from three sites (upstream, middle and downstream) and community structure was compared with that at ten natural, permanent reference sites nearby.
  • 2 The number of species colonizing increased rapidly during the first 3 months. The increase was most rapid upstream but levelled off during the second year at this site, while numbers continued to increase downstream.
  • 3 Simuliid species were the earliest colonizers and reached high densities at upstream and middle sites during the first year. Ephemeropteran and plecopteran species also occurred early on, whereas Coleoptera, Odonata and Trichoptera were, on average, slower to colonize. Blackfly densities decreased upstream after the first year and hydropsychids became numerically dominant.
  • 4 The colonization order of functional feeding groups was as predicted: filter feeders first, grazers/collectors intermediate, predators and shredders last.
  • 5 After a year, the community structure in Flugströmmen closely resembled that in lake-outlet streams situated in the area, although communities at the three sites within the stream were most similar to one another.
  • 6 The possible role of competitive and predatory processes in determining the observed successional patterns are discussed.

Prey intake by Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta was measured across different riparian vegetation types: grassland, open canopy deciduous and closed canopy deciduous, in upland streams in County Mayo, Western Ireland. Fishes were collected by electrofishing while invertebrates were sampled from the benthos using a Surber sampler and drifting invertebrates collected in drift traps. Aquatic invertebrates dominated prey numbers in the diets of 0+ year Atlantic salmon and brown trout and 1+ year Atlantic salmon, whereas terrestrial invertebrates were of greater importance for diets of 1+ and 2+ year brown trout. Terrestrial prey biomass was generally greater than aquatic prey for 1+ and 2+ year brown trout across seasons and riparian types. Prey intake was greatest in spring and summer and least in autumn apart from 2+ year brown trout that sustained feeding into autumn. Total prey numbers captured tended to be greater for all age classes in streams with deciduous riparian canopy. Atlantic salmon consumed more aquatic prey and brown trout more terrestrial prey with an ontogenetic increase in prey species richness and diversity. Atlantic salmon and brown trout diets were most similar in summer. Terrestrial invertebrates provided an important energy subsidy particularly for brown trout. In grassland streams, each fish age class was strongly associated with aquatic, mainly benthic invertebrates. In streams with deciduous riparian canopy cover, diet composition partitioned between conspecifics with older brown trout associated with surface drifting terrestrial invertebrates and older Atlantic salmon associated with aquatic invertebrates with a high drift propensity in the water column and 0+ year fish feeding on benthic aquatic invertebrates. Deciduous riparian canopy cover may therefore facilitate vertical partitioning of feeding position within the water column between sympatric Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Upstream movements and migrations of benthic macroinvertebrates are an important component of running water dynamics. Many lotic organisms perform upstream movements at some stage in their life-cycle. We investigated whether a boulder ramp and a concrete bypass fishway on two streams in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, are successfully used by benthic invertebrates to reach upstream areas. We compared macroinvertebrate distribution at sites upstream and downstream of the fishways, rated the fishways according to their constructional features and conducted migration experiments with marked Gammaridae in the passages. The number of taxa and densities of macroinvertebrates did not significantly differ between upstream and downstream sites in both rivers. Constructional features and the results of the mark-recapture experiments indicated that the boulder ramp allows upstream migrations in principal, whereas the bypass is more difficult for macroinvertebrates to ascend. Both fishways immediately exit into an impoundment, which is a potential barrier for migrating invertebrates. High average current velocities, lack of lenitic banks and sheltered interstices, as well as problems caused by the operation of a power plant are factors explaining why the Enz River bypass is only marginally functional for invertebrates. The investigation concludes that in constructing fishways suitable for upstream movements of lotic invertebrates, more attention should be paid to their specific requirements.  相似文献

While upstream movements of benthic invertebrates have been reported, gregarious upstream migrations of freshwater snails have never been described. We report a possible adaptation to downstream drift by a population of the Neritid (Archeogastropoda) snail,Neritina (Clypeolum) latissima (Broderip, 1833), in the Rio Claro, a small coastal river in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica. We observed large numbers of these snails in gregarious upstream migration. Snails migrated in narrow lines up to 32 meters long, containing thousands of snails. The migration covered over 1 km of the stream. Larval and juvenile snails are more susceptible to washout by current, and differential mortality of these age classes in the estuarine and ocean environment may provide the selective pressure for the evolution of this behavior.  相似文献

Although Cladocera are collected often in large rivers, their importance in streams has been under-estimated. This paper summarizes the results of a preliminary study of the benthic Cladocera in the streams of three watersheds in South Central Indiana. Seventeen sites were sampled with respect to species of benthic Cladocera present, their relative abundance, population size, and population dynamics.Cladocera were present in all streams and sites in the three watersheds. Nineteen species were collected: 13 species from the family Chydoridae, 3 Daphniidae, 2 Macrothricidae, and 1 Bosminidae. Just four species — Alona circumfimbriata, Chydorus brevilabris, Pleuroxus denticulatus, and Macrothrix laticornis — made up 68–96% of the numbers at all sites.Density of Cladocera ranged from 3–5200 m–2 and they reproduced and maintained populations in the streams sampled. Numbers were generally high in October and early November and decreased to near zero in late December and January. The most important factor appearing to affect population sizes was discharge. Numbers at almost all sites decreased significantly after a rainfall increased discharge.A Principal Components and clustering analysis grouped sites with similar physical parameters in a continuum of low to high order. Sites with low numbers of Cladocera were generally shallow, narrow, and had a loose unconsolidated substrate. Sites with high population numbers were generally deep, wide, and had a stable substrate that accumulated detritus.  相似文献
