Rana esculenta specimens were collected, during the last 13 years, in well-defined areas around Naples. The annual ovarian cycle shows distinct phases of recrudescence (starting September; vitellogenesis), breeding (late March-early July; egg deposition and active oogenesis) and quiescence (July-August; no follicular growth). Previtellogenic follicles are recruited for vitellogenesis in early September and in between two successive ovulatory waves. Breeding congregations are generally formed after a heavy rain fall and eggs are laid in standing waters, temporary or permanent. A maximum of three clutches of eggs is produced during the breeding season, at roughly monthly intervals. All mature females reproduce to some extent. Ovarian weight and clutch size are positively correlated to body weight. Depending upon the body size, the potential clutch size ranges from 1000 to 3500 eggs during the first wave of ovulation and it is notably smaller in the successive wave(s) of ovulation. Egg masses and tadpoles are left unprotected and mortality is high. The life cycle from the fertilized egg to completion of metamorphosis is 2 months and oogenesis in the ovary starts in the larva before the onset of metamorphic climax. Young females hatching from the first clutch of eggs may reach sexual maturity and breed in May the following year; those hatching from the last clutch require nearly 20 months to reach sexual maturity. The importance of some endocrine and exocrine factors for the regulation of ovarian activity and reproduction is discussed.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of monogamous passerines is characterized by a sequence of events leading from courtship and pair formation through nest building, egg laying and incubation, and ending with the care of young. Each of these stages is accompanied by equally predictable changes in the pattern of hormone secretion. This report describes endocrine changes in the plasma of free-living Brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus uter , during a breeding season. Changes in some morphological parameters are also presented.
Cowbirds are brood parasites that show no parental behaviour and lay eggs almost daily for approximately eight weeks. Males are not territorial, but they mate guard extensively. Hcncc, their breeding biology is quite different from that of the nesting species described above. They are hormonally distinct, as well. Luteinizing hormone rises in the spring and remains elevated throughout May and most of June. By July, when breeding has ceased, plasma luteinizing hormone levels are at pre-breeding values. Plasma androgens are also maintained at peak levels for an extended period of time, although they decline briefly between the establishment of dominance hierarchies and the onset of breeding. Circulating levels of corticosterone are elevated until the middle of the breeding season, when they begin to fall, although here, too, there is a transient depression just prior to breeding. In the light of the studies on nesting species, these data suggest that hormone profiles are closely correlated with the breeding and social activities that characterize the species under investigation.  相似文献

Plasma levels of testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), and prolactin were measured in samples collected from free-living song sparrows, Melospiza melodia. In males, plasma levels of T were elevated early in the season when territories were established and when females laid the first clutch of eggs. Thereafter, T levels declined and remained low throughout the remainder of the breeding cycle. However, if the first brood was lost to a predator, or by experimental removal of the nest, plasma levels of T increased as renesting, to replace the clutch, occurred. Circulating levels of prolactin in males began to rise during the egg-laying stage of the first brood, reached a maximum toward the end of the incubation stage, remained elevated until breeding was terminated, and then declined throughout the moulting stage to basal values in October. Prolactin levels remained high throughout the breeding season irrespective of whether a brood was raised successfully or whether the nest was lost and renesting occurred. In females, plasma levels of E2 were elevated prior to the egg-laying stage for each brood as is typical of multiple-brooded species. However, prolactin titers rose dramatically during egg-laying for the first clutch (slightly higher than in males) and were maximal by onset of incubation. Only females of this species incubate, although males do feed young. As in males, plasma prolactin in females remained high between broods and during experimentally induced renesting, and then declined to basal by the end of the moult stage in October. These data suggest that there are no differences in the temporal patterns of prolactin concentrations in blood between multiple-brooding and renesting. In a separate experiment, captive male song sparrows were transferred from a short day to artificial long days (18L 6D) and a control group was maintained on 9L 15D. In the long-day group, prolactin levels rose abruptly over the first 20 days, as the testes developed, and remained high well into postnuptial moult after the gonads had regressed. Prolactin remained basal in the control group. These data suggest that the temporal pattern of circulating prolactin levels throughout the breeding season is regulated at least partly by changing photoperiod. However, nonphotoperiodic factors are also important since photoperiodically induced increases in prolactin are significantly less than those seen in free-living individuals. Energy demands in the platypus are likely to increase in the breeding season, which occurs from winter to early spring. Glucocorticoids, which play a major role in energy mobilisation, were measured in consecutive blood samples from free-ranging adults at approximately monthly intervals throughout the year. Glucose and free fatty acids were also measured in some samples. Plasma concentrations of glucocorticoids rose significantly during the first 30 min after capture, accompanied by a rise in free fatty acids, but no corresponding increase in glucose concentrations. We observed a strong pattern in plasma glucocorticoids in samples collected within 15 min of capture (indicative of pre-disturbance concentrations) in different phases of the annual reproductive cycle, with significantly higher levels in both males and females in the breeding season compared to the non-breeding season. These data, and the decline in tail fat stores that occur towards the end of the mating period (around October), suggest that platypus experience high-energy demands during this phase of reproduction. Plasma glucocorticoid concentrations in females sampled during the lactation period (October-February) were relatively low, and similar to those in females sampled in the non-breeding, non-lactation period (March-June). The latter requires further investigation as results may have been influenced by sampling limitations.  相似文献

Most seasonally breeding songbirds display dramatic seasonal fluctuations in plasma testosterone (T) levels and mate attraction behaviors, including song. However, males of some songbird species, such as the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), continue to sing at high levels after the breeding season, when T levels are basal. In male starlings song during the breeding season functions mainly to attract mates, whereas song during the nonbreeding season appears unrelated to reproduction. This suggests that song produced in a context unrelated to female courtship, unlike song directed toward females, is not regulated by plasma T. In captive males housed in large outdoor aviaries we explored the relationship between plasma T and song produced during the breeding season within and outside a courtship context. This was achieved by determining the effects of castration and subsequent T treatment on song and mate attraction behaviors in both the presence and the absence of a female. Compared to intact males, castrated males did not show reduced song activity in the absence of a female for at least 6 months after the operation, strongly suggesting that the expression of noncourtship song is not regulated by plasma T. Likewise, we found that experimentally elevating T levels in castrated males did not affect noncourtship song rates. However, control castrated males receiving empty implants tended to show reduced noncourtship song rates after implantation. This may have been due to a suppressive effect caused by the presence of the T-implanted castrated males in the same aviary. In contrast, courtship singing was clearly controlled by plasma T: it was abolished by castration and restored by subsequent T replacement when males were housed both individually and in a group situation. High plasma levels of T also appeared necessary for the activation of three other behavioral traits critical for mate attraction, namely, nesthole occupancy, spending time (singing) in a nesthole, and carrying green nesting material into a nesthole.  相似文献

The breeding ecology of the Kori Bustard Ardeotis kori strunthiunculus was studied in the plains of the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania in 2014 and 2015. Random transects were used to search for male courtship displays, nests, chicks and subadults. GPS satellite collars were used to locate nesting females. Linear regression analyses and post hoc tests were used to determine the predictors that contributed most to the variation of the dependent variables (courtship display, nest, chicks and subadults). The results indicate that courtship behaviour peaks during the short dry and short rainy season before the peaks in nests and chicks. The highest nest frequency was found in short grass habitats. Female Kori Bustard may undergo repeated nestings within a single breeding season. The adult sex ratio was female skewed during the breeding season. The Kori Bustard breeding season in the Serengeti plains is relatively long, lasting for almost nine months, and taking place during all seasons except for the long dry season. We recommend that management authorities conduct assessments of Kori Bustard recruitment as well as habitat suitability in the Serengeti ecosystem to develop future conservation strategies.  相似文献

In anticipation of the breeding season male songbirds of the temperate zones undergo gonadal recrudescence in early spring that lead to elevated circulating testosterone (T) levels, positively correlated with an increase in aggressive and song behaviour. However, besides seasonal changes there are also marked fluctuations of T levels and song production within the breeding season. In many species, T levels and singing activity drop after pairing or after the first clutch is laid. Domesticated canaries (Serinus canaria) are multiple‐brooded with an extended breeding season, and males continue to sing after egg‐laying. So far, studies have mainly focused on the seasonality of T levels and song behaviour whereas the pattern of change throughout the breeding period is unknown. Here, we focused on the first and on the last brood of the breeding season. We measured plasma T levels in males at the different breeding stages and assessed song characteristics of males at both times. T levels fluctuated significantly throughout brood 1, being highest during the nest building stage compared with egg‐laying and feeding of young. No such changes occurred during the last brood. Temporal song characteristics changed between brood 1 and brood 3 with song length being the main contributor to explain these changes. Our data suggest that T mainly plays a role in mate attraction and initial nesting site selection but that elevated levels are not necessary for subsequent breeding attempts. Furthermore, temporal song characteristics are maintained independently of T levels, suggesting a threshold effect. Our results demonstrate behavioural and physiological plasticity of domesticated canaries during the breeding season and are consistent with previous findings in wild songbirds.  相似文献

The menstrual cycle was examined in Japanese monkeys, short-day breeders, with or without nursing babies during the breeding season by determining the change in the plasma concentration of progesterone. Blood samples were obtained weekly from suckling and nonsuckling mothers for 6 months from September to February. Plasma concentrations of progesterone in suckling mothers did not show any apparent fluctuation and remained low throughout the study, while irregular menstruation was observed. In nonsuckling mothers, cyclic changes in plasma progesterone concentration accompanied by regular menstruation occurred from October. Annual birth rates were lower in monkeys housed in individual cages (17.6%) than in free-ranging monkeys in Miyajima colony, near Hiroshima in Japan (37.5%). These results indicate that the suckling stimulus for females with young born in spring is potent enough to suppress ovarian activity during the autumn breeding season.  相似文献

Seasonal fecundity is a composite metric that is determined by component parameters such as clutch size, nest survival and re‐nesting probability. Many of these component parameters are known to vary with environmental conditions, in particular rainfall prior to or during the breeding season. In some species, seasonal fecundity is positively related to rainfall, but little is known about which component parameters of seasonal fecundity respond most strongly to rainfall. We used intensive nest monitoring of a multi‐brooded tropical forest passerine, the Montserrat Oriole Icterus oberi, to examine the effects of rainfall during the pre‐breeding season on component parameters of annual fecundity. We monitored all nests of a total of 42 pairs over 5 years in which rainfall varied substantially. We then related clutch size, nest survival, onset and length of the breeding season, re‐nesting probability and re‐nesting interval to pre‐breeding season rainfall using generalized linear mixed models that accounted for random variation across sites and individual pairs, and incorporated other variables known to affect the response. Higher pre‐breeding season rainfall led to an increase in clutch size and a decrease in re‐nesting interval, but nest survival, re‐nesting probability and length of the breeding season were not affected by variation in rainfall. The onset of the breeding season was delayed in very dry years. We conclude that higher rainfall is likely to increase food availability and thus body condition of female Montserrat Orioles, leading to an increase in fecundity due to larger clutch sizes.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, prostaglandin (PG) E2 and PGF were measured during three stages of the natural nesting cycle of the tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus), a rare New Zealand reptile. Specifically, we tested whether nesting activity in this species is correlated with significant modifications in plasma concentrations of these hormones. Tuatara dig a nest over a period of several nights, oviposit a complete clutch on a single night, and then guard that nest for several nights. We observed no significant changes in mean plasma concentrations of estradiol or progesterone among the different stages of nesting. In contrast, PGE2 was elevated during nest digging and oviposition but declined significantly during nest guarding. Plasma PGF was elevated during nest digging, rose significantly during oviposition, and declined to basal levels during nest guarding. These data indicate that oviposition in reptiles is associated with elevated plasma concentrations of PGs, suggesting that these hormones function in causing oviducal contractions and/or luteolysis. Moreover, these data suggest that the role of PGs in oviducal function may have been conserved throughout evolution of the amniote vertebrates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Few investigators have examined how a female's prior history (i.e., number of clutches laid previously and whether those nesting attempts were successful or not) might influence the success of a particular clutch. Our objective was to determine the seasonal change in the mean number of fledglings successfully leaving nests in a population of Prairie Warblers ( Dendroica discolor ). To do so, we calculated the success of each clutch in the laying sequence (i.e., first, second, third, …, n th) and sorted them further by whether they were laid before (first-brood clutches) or after (second-brood clutches) the first brood fledged. In our sample population of 70 females we knew the fate of all clutches laid during a breeding season. Although the number of fledglings per successful clutch varied slightly, the probability that a clutch would be successful (i.e., produce at least one fledgling) and the number of fledglings per nest attempt increased during the breeding season. Thus, later clutches were more productive than earlier clutches. The low probability of producing a successful first clutch early in the breeding season would seem to favor selection for females that wait until later in the season to begin breeding. However, the seasonal reproductive success of females may be more dependent on breeding early (increasing the number of clutches laid in a season) than on the higher probability of success with later clutches. Our results indicate that further study of seasonal changes in reproductive success and their causes is needed.  相似文献

The Mediterranean tortoise (Testudo graeca) is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. Reproductive characteristics and means to increase offspring production were studied in T. graeca terrestris in a semi-natural environment. Courtship and mating occurred during early spring for about 4 weeks, followed by a laying season of approximately 2 months, with a second, shorter mating period in the fall. During the first mating, calcified eggs were already present in the uterus; we inferred that sperm from both mating seasons were stored in the oviduct for fertilization of eggs of the second laying cycle and of the following year. Average egg production was 3.8+/-0.3 eggs/year. Most females laid all of their eggs in a single clutch, but 18% laid in a second clutch, 11-21 days later. X-ray radiography revealed calcified eggs in the uterus about 4 weeks before oviposition. All eggs in the uterus were calcified simultaneously and were laid in a single clutch; if a second clutch developed, those eggs were also calcified simultaneously. Based on endoscopic examinations, ovaries were active throughout the entire year. Plasma progesterone concentrations in females were very low and were detected only soon after oviposition ( 440 +/-141 pg/ml). Plasma estradiol concentrations in females varied from 4.1 +/-1.5 pg/ml to 70.2 +/-29.4 pg/ml, with no clear seasonal pattern. Maintaining tortoises at a low environmental temperature (9 +/-1 degrees C versus 28 +/- 1 degrees C) reduced plasma estradiol concentrations. Giving 2mg/kg tamoxifen (TAM) increased plasma estradiol to 220 +/-33 pg/ml when treatment was given in September but not in late October, winter or spring. Treatment with TAM increased the number of eggs laid during the following laying season to 7.3 +/- 1.0 eggs/year, laid in one to three clutches. In males, plasma testosterone concentrations had a seasonal pattern with the onset of a rise in July from 2 to >4ng/ml, a continued increase to a peak of 12.8+/-5.3 ng/ml during November and a decline thereafter. Artificial incubation in sand at 29 +/-1 degrees C shortened the natural incubation time of 103+/-3.1 days to 83.5 +/- 1.3 days, increased hatching rate from 28 to 53%, and increased survival rate from 51 to 71% at 40 weeks of age. In summary, this study provides options for increasing reproductive performance, hatchability and offspring survival in captive Mediterranean tortoises, and may offer new tools for conservation of animals that are on the verge of extinction.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the Nile crocodile ( Crocodylus niloticus ) was studied in Zimbabwe. Females attained sexual maturity after they had reached a total length of about 262 to 287 cm and males, 270 to 295 cm. Some adult females did not reproduce every year. Follicle growth and vitellogenesis occurred from April to mid August during the dry winter. During this time reproductive females had elevated levels of plasma oestradiol-17β, testosterone, calcium and magnesium, but lowered levels of iron. The measuring of plasma calcium was an 'early pregnancy' test, reliable up to four months before nesting. Elevated levels of plasma testosterone in reproductive females corresponded to the time of courtship and mating. Ovulation occurred during the latter half of August. Males had viable sperm from mid May to mid September, during the winter. Courtship and mating occurred from late June to mid August, when crocodiles were confined to pools. Females nested on the higher sand ridges in the dry river bed from early September to early October, and eggs hatched during December.  相似文献

Plasma testosterone (T) concentrations, measured in wild bats of P. poliocephalus in Queensland in 1983-87, showed a peak during the mating season in March. Plasma androstenedione (A) concentrations changed less dramatically with season. Mean testicular concentration and total content of T and A was substantially greater in March than in regressed testes in July-October. Paired adrenal glands were heavier during February to April than during September to November. In the same wild population, throughout a single breeding season (1987), plasma T concentrations were significantly higher in mid-March than 3 weeks previously or 3 weeks later. Testicular T content rose as the breeding season progressed, being greatest during March, coinciding with the large rise in plasma T concentrations. Testicular T concentration and content were correlated significantly with plasma T concentrations. Adrenal glands contained T, but the absolute concentrations were much lower than in the testis. No significant changes in plasma, testicular or adrenal A concentrations were found as the breeding season progressed. The large increase in plasma T during the mating season appears to be due to increased testicular production.  相似文献

The seasonal patterns of two primary plasma androgens, testosterone (T) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), were assessed in adult male alligators from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a unique barrier island environment and home to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Samples were collected monthly from 2008 to 2009, with additional samples collected at more random intervals in 2007 and 2010. Plasma T concentrations peaked in April, coincident with breeding and courtship, and declined rapidly throughout the summer. Seasonal plasma T patterns in smaller though reproductively active adult males differed from those in their larger counterparts during the breeding season. Both size classes showed significant increases in plasma T concentration from February to March, at the beginning of the breeding season. However, smaller adults did not experience the peak in plasma T concentrations in April that were observed in larger adults, and their concentrations were significantly lower than those of larger males for the remainder of the breeding season. Plasma DHEA concentrations peaked in May and were significantly reduced by June. This is the first study to demonstrate the presence of DHEA in a crocodilian, and the high plasma DHEA concentrations that paralleled the animals' reproductive activity suggest a reproductive and/or behavioral role in adult male alligators. Similar to androgen variations in some birds, plasma DHEA concentrations in the alligators were considerably higher than T concentrations during the nonbreeding season, suggesting a potential role in maintaining nonbreeding seasonal aggression.  相似文献

In the viviparous skink Niveoscincus metallicus clutch size appears to be determined before vitellogenesis, and is not altered later by follicular atresia or embryonic loss. This suggests that the number of follicles recruited is determined by the endocrine environment early in the vitellogenic period. Through a series of experiments in which we manipulated gonadotropin concentrations by administering exogenous FSH, we aimed to investigate this hypothesis. Pre-vitellogenic females showed no response to exogenous ovine FSH. In early vitellogenic females, FSH induced follicular recruitment: follicles were enlarged and clutch size increased by recruitment of a second cohort of follicles; some females also ovulated. Females treated with FSH in mid-vitellogenesis had elevated mean plasma estradiol concentrations compared to controls; no follicular recruitment was observed, but most of these animals ovulated. Females treated with a range of doses of FSH in late vitellogenesis ovulated at least one month before natural ovulation, again without recruitment of extra follicles. It appears therefore that in Niveoscincus metallicus exogenous FSH can induce recruitment of additional follicles only if administered during early vitellogenesis. We conclude that in this species clutch size is determined by proximate environmental factors influencing gonadotropin levels early in follicular recruitment, and cannot be increased even if conditions become more favourable once vitellogenesis is established.  相似文献

2001年在杭州小和山北草蜥繁殖季节的3个时段分别捕得两性成年个体,解剖后鉴定性别,分离躯干、尾、肝脏和腹脂肪体,并测定其重量。按雌体卵的状态(休止卵、卵黄沉积卵和输卵管卵),卵黄沉积始于3月下旬(T1),首窝卵产于5月上旬(T2),部分(37%)终止繁殖于6月中旬(T3)。从T1到T2,雌性腹脂肪体从平均17.3mg至消失,而雄性从6.3mg减至0.8mg,雌性减量是雄性的3倍。两性6月中旬腹脂肪体消失,而躯干、尾和肝脏的脂肪含量在3个时段无显著变化。很可能雌性腹脂肪体的消耗使首窝卵产出时间提前,从而增加单个繁殖季节的窝数和总的繁殖成功率。  相似文献

Cycles in gonadal activity and plasma sex steroid concentrations were investigated in wild female and male tuatara on Stephens Island, New Zealand. Females nest once every four years on average. Vitellogenesis is spread over the first three years, and mating, ovulation and nesting occur in the fourth. Oviducal eggs are carried for6–8 months before nesting. Although the length of this ovarian cycle is unparalleled among oviparous reptiles, the associated cycles in plasma concentrations of sex steroids are similar to those in other reptiles. Mean plasma concentrations of oestradiol increase during vitellogenesis, peak at mating, fall rapidly before or around ovulation, are low during most of gravidity, and rise slightly during late gravidity-nesting. Plasma concentrations of testosterone show a similarcycle. Mean plasma concentrations of progesterone are low during vitellogenesis and peak around ovulation. This periovulatory surge falls within1–2 months, and mean concentrations are low during the final 5–6 months of gravidity. Male tuatara show an annual, pre-nuptial reproductive cycle. Mean plasma concentrations of testosterone are low during winter, rise during spring, peak during midsummer-early autumn, when pre-nuptial displays and mating occur, and fall in mid autumn. Limited histological data indicate that spermiogenesis occurs during midsummer-early autumn, and also support a previous study suggesting that there may be no period of complete testicular and epididymal regression. In comparison with the pre-nuptial cycles of other temperate-zone reptiles, the cycle in male tuatara shows a more prolonged duration of testicular activity and of rising or elevated plasma testosterone concentrations. The prolonged reproductive cycles of male and female tuatara may be adaptations to a temperate environment with cool summers and cool, but not freezing, winters.  相似文献

We examined the association between green turtle nesting activities and plasma profiles of hormones that are widely implicated in aspects of heightened metabolism and energy regulation; epinephrine (EPI), norepinephrine (NE) and corticosterone. In conjunction, we examined plasma profiles of glucose and lactate to infer metabolic processes associated with green turtle nesting behaviour. Finally, because these hormones are also involved in mediating behaviour and physiology associated with stressful situations, we examined the effect of a stressor encountered during nesting, physical disturbance, on hormone levels. Plasma profiles of epinephrine, norepinephrine and corticosterone were not significantly altered across different stages of nesting. Plasma glucose and lactate both exhibited significant increases related to nesting activity; glucose increased dramatically during the emergence stage of nesting before stabilizing, and lactate levels continued to increase throughout the nesting process. There was no significant association between plasma hormones and glucose. For female turtles that abandoned nesting activities due to competition for nest space, there was no significant difference in plasma levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine and corticosterone compared to females that persisted with nesting activities. Overall, while distinct metabolic changes took place in nesting females, there was little association in profiles of hormones typically considered important for regulating heightened metabolism and nesting activity. This disassociation could arise because hormonal action may be altered in breeding female green turtles to facilitate reproductive processes.  相似文献

The seasonal pattern of sperm storage was examined in a wild population of Yellow-headed Blackbirds Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus by collecting females at eight different stages of their breeding cycle. Sperm storage tubules (SSTs) were present in simiktr numbers throughout all stages of the breeding season, from arrival on the breeding grounds to departure for winter. In contrast, the size of SSTs varied enormously over the season, reaching maximum size just prior to clutch initiation, when SSTs were more than three times the length of those found in post-breeding birds. The amount of sperm stored also varied over the season, in parallel with the growth and regression of SSTs. Sperm were first observed in SSTs approximately 2–5 days before laying and increased rapidly in abundance until clutch initiation. The amount of sperm stored then decreased gradually during the egg-laying period so that by clutch completion approximately 70% of stored sperm had disappeared from the SSTs. The rapid seasonal development and subsequent regression of SSTs in the Yellow-headed Blackbird contrast sharply with the pattern found in domestic poultry, where the imposition of continuous laying regimes has; led to the maintenance of SSTs at maximum size for extended periods of time.  相似文献
