In this study, we measured and analyzed the spectral characteristics of a low-frequency magnetic field (MF) inside several gasoline-powered cars while driving on busy city roads. The spectra obtained upon measurements in the interior of the cars are compared with those measured in office locations at different times of the day and with different disturbances of the geomagnetic field (k-index of disturbance 2–8). The power spectral density of the electromagnetic field in cars moving on busy roads in the frequency range of 10−3–102 Hz is one to three orders of magnitude higher than that in urban offices. This raises a question regarding the possible influence of these MFs on the psychophysiological state of drivers. In turn, in the daytime, the MF power in the range from 10−3 to 1 Hz inside the locations is three times higher compared with the power of a strong geomagnetic storm. Despite such an overwhelming magnetic background, geomagnetic storms affect various organisms. The nonspecific effect of magnetic storms is supposed to be associated with relatively long (lasting several hours or more [frequency range of 10−4−10−5 Hz]) periods of enhancement or weakening of the local geomagnetic field. In this range, especially at night, the power spectral density of geomagnetic disturbances is comparable to and can even exceed the power density of urban MFs. © 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society.  相似文献

The proposed method makes it possible to find out the direct influence of the geomagnetic field (GMF) on microorganisms of the family Enterobacteriaceae (the genera Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella). Different disturbances in the state of GMF, both in amplitude and frequency range, were modeled under laboratory conditions. Microbial cells were cultivated in sterile artesian-well water or physiological saline with no organic substrate added. Experiments were performed at room temperature for 5 and more days. In these experiments the standard dose of microbial suspension was inoculated daily into Endo medium. The differences in the reproductive capacity and survival time of microorganisms in the test and control vials were compared with the indices of geomagnetic disturbances. If the experiments were started 2-4 days before the appearance of geomagnetic disturbances, the suppression of the reproductive capacity of microorganisms occurred, then followed its stimulation; this phenomenon particularly affected Escherichia coli and Shigella sonnei. In case of the quiet state of GMF the suppression of reproductive capacity is commonly observed. If the beginning of the experiment coincides with the appearance of a magnetic storm, a sharp decrease in the reproductive capacity of microorganisms and the death of the population within 1-5 days usually occurred. The survival rate of microorganisms depended on the state of GMF disturbances. The survival time of cell generations during disturbances of GMF was considerably longer. Under the conditions of a superimposed magnetic field the reproductive capacity of microorganisms outstrips, as a rule, that developing under the conditions of the compensation of the field. Studies on the biological activity of infralow frequency showed that the multidirectional reproductivity effect was observed due to constant changes in the geomagnetic background.  相似文献

Elevated levels of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play a major role as a mechanism of resistance to insecticides and acaricides in resistant pest insects and mites, respectively. Such compounds are either detoxicated directly via phase I metabolism or detoxicated by phase II metabolism of metabolites as formed by microsomal monooxygenases. Here we used monochlorobimane (MCB) as an artificial substrate and glutathione to determine total GST activity in equivalents of single pest insects and spider mites in a sensitive 96-well plate-based assay system by measuring the enzymatic conversion of MCB to its fluorescent bimane-glutathione adduct. The differentiation by their GST activity between several strains of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), with different degrees of resistance to numerous acaricides was more sensitive with MCB compared to the commonly used substrate 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB). Compared to an acaricide-susceptible reference strain, one field population of T. urticae showed a more than 10-fold higher GST activity measured with MCB, in contrast to a less than 2-fold higher activity when CDNB was used. Furthermore, we showed that GST activity can be sensitively assessed with MCB in homogenates of pest insects such as Heliothis virescens, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), and Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).  相似文献

Monochlorobimane (MCB) is often used to visualize glutathione (GSH) levels in cultured cells, since it is quickly converted to a fluorescent GSH conjugate (GS–MCB). To test for consequences of MCB application on the GSH metabolism of astrocytes, we have studied rat astrocyte-rich primary cultures as model system. MCB caused a concentration dependent rapid decrease in the cellular GSH content. Simultaneously, a transient accumulation of GS–MCB in the cells was observed with a maximal content 5 min after MCB application. The cellular accumulation was followed by a rapid release of GS–MCB into the medium with a maximal initial export rate of 27.9 ± 6.5 nmol h−1 mg protein−1. Transporters of the family of multidrug resistance proteins (Mrps) are likely to be involved in this export, since the Mrp inhibitor MK571 lowered the export rate by 60%. These data demonstrate that, due to its rapid export from astrocytes, GS–MCB is only under well-defined conditions a reliable indicator of the cellular GSH concentration and that MK571 can be used to maintain maximal GS–MCB levels in astrocytes.  相似文献

The principles of multi-latitude monitoring of Heliomed-2 for obtaining new data on the impact of space weather on human health are described. The results of synchronous monitoring of responses of the cardiovascular system and psychoemotional state of healthy volunteers to changes in geomagnetic disturbances at high (Tiksi village and Yakutsk) and middle (Saratov) latitudes are presented. In all the examined groups, the effect of synchronization of the processes of repolarization of the ventricular myocardium (according to the coefficient of symmetry of the T wave of the electrocardiogram) and geomagnetic disturbances, as well as synchronization of reactive anxiety and geomagnetic disturbances was revealed. It was found that the group cardiac sensitivity and psychological sensitivity to geomagnetic disturbances coincide regardless of the latitude of residence in the same group of volunteers.

IntroductionIncreased access to remote sensing datasets presents opportunities to model an animal's in-situ experience of the landscape to study behavior and test hypotheses such as geomagnetic map navigation. MagGeo is an open-source tool that combines high spatiotemporal resolution geomagnetic data with animal tracking data. Unlike gridded remote sensing data, satellite geomagnetic data are point-based measurements of the magnetic field at the location of each satellite. MagGeo converts these measurements into geomagnetic values at an animal's location and time. The objective of this paper is to evaluate different interpolation methods and data frameworks within the MagGeo software and quantify how accurately MagGeo can model geomagnetic values and patterns as experienced by animals.MethodWe tested MagGeo outputs against data from 109 terrestrial geomagnetic observatories across 7 years. Unlike satellite data, ground-based data are more likely to represent how animals near the Earth's surface experience geomagnetic field dynamics. Within the MagGeo framework, we compared an inverse-distance weighting interpolation with three different nearest-neighbour interpolation methods. We also compared model geomagnetic data with combined model and satellite data in their ability to capture geomagnetic fluctuations. Finally, we fit a linear mixed-effect model to understand how error is influenced by factors like geomagnetic activity and distance in space and time between satellite and point of interest.Results and conclusionsThe overall absolute difference between MagGeo outputs and observatory values was <1% of the total possible range of values for geomagnetic components. Satellite data measurements closest in time to the point of interest consistently had lowest error which likely reflects the ability of the nearest neighbour in time interpolation method to capture small continuous daily fluctuations and larger discrete events like geomagnetic storms. Combined model and satellite data also capture geomagnetic fluctuations better than model data alone across most geomagnetic activity levels. Our linear mixed-effect models suggest that most of the variation in error can be explained by location-specific effects originating largely from local crustal biases, and that high geomagnetic activity usually predicts higher error though ultimately remaining within the 1% error range. Our results indicate that MagGeo can help researchers explore how animals may use the geomagnetic field to navigate long distances by providing access to data and methods that accurately model how animals moving near the Earth's surface experience the geomagnetic field.  相似文献

The effect of geomagnetic disturbances on the intrauterine condition of the fetus in high latitudes was studied by comparing the index of fetus condition (IFC) with the heliogeophysical indices (planetary Kp index and Dst variation index). The functional state of fetus at late terms of pregnancy was assessed by the method of cardiomonitoring. The data of fetal cardiomonitoring were processed by the method of Prof. Demidov by calculating the integral IFC using a computer program. It was found that the variations in maximum IFC values (approximately 15% of the total number of cases) coincide with seasonal variations in geomagnetic disturbances. The maximum values of IFC were observed at the equinox (March-April-May, October-November), and the minimum values were registered in the period of the solstice. A comparison of IFC values with the indices of geomagnetic disturbances indicated that the IFC value was maximum in the periods of either the greatest weakening of geomagnetic activity or maximum disturbances.  相似文献

Morsellized cortico-cancellous bone (MCB) is frequently used in orthopaedic revision surgery to restore lost bone stock. In this study, we examine the validity of using bovine MCB as a substitute for human MCB in in vitro mechanical testing of bone grafts. The paper describes the fat and water content of impacted and unimpacted human and bovine MCB. During this work we applied constrained compression testing to describe the elastic, plastic and time dependent response. Nearly all parameters were found to be significantly different and were influenced differently by impaction for the two types of MCB. The denser trabecular structure, higher fat content of bovine MCB and higher stiffness and compressive strength of cortical bovine bone may explain the differences observed. Consequently we are not confident about the applicability of bovine MCB as a substitute for human MCB for in vitro mechanical testing.  相似文献

Approximately 22 000 hectares (5% of the total maize growing area) of transgenic maize expressing the Cry1Ab toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt maize) have been planted annually in Spain since 1998. Changes in the susceptibility to Cry1Ab of Spanish populations of the Mediterranean corn borer (MCB), Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and the European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), were assessed by annual monitoring on Bt maize fields. No increase in resistance was detected in the MCB populations from Ebro, Albacete, and Badajoz, nor in the ECB populations from Ebro and Badajoz during the period 1999–2002. The susceptibility of the MCB population from Madrid fluctuated from year to year, but a gradual trend towards higher levels of tolerance was not observed. Laboratory selection assays for eight generations yielded selected strains of MCB and ECB that were 21‐ and 10‐fold significantly more tolerant to Cry1Ab than the corresponding unselected strains, respectively. Nevertheless, none of the field‐collected or laboratory‐selected larvae were able to survive on Bt maize. Considering these data, no consistent shifts in susceptibility were found for Spanish populations of MCB nor ECB after 5 years of Bt maize cultivation, but systematic field monitoring needs to be continued.  相似文献

To assess the role of skylight polarization in the orientation system of a day-migrating bird, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters (Lichenostomus chrysops, Meliphagidae) were tested in funnel cages for their directional preferences. In control tests in the natural local geomagnetic field under the clear natural sky, they preferred their normal migratory course. Manipulations of the e-vector by depolarizing the skylight or rotating the axis of polarization failed to affect the orientation as long as the natural geomagnetic field was present. When deprived of magnetic information, the birds continued in their normal migratory direction as long as they had access to information from the natural sky, or when either the sun or polarized light was available. However, when sun was hidden by clouds, depolarizers caused disorientation. — These findings indicate that polarized skylight can be used for orientation when no other known cues are available. However in the hierarchy of cues of this species, the polarization pattern clearly ranks lower than information from the geomagnetic field.  相似文献

Apparently stimulatory male copulatory behaviour (MCB) is widespread among arthropods and it could help males to increase their fitness by inducing favourable behavioural and physiological changes in females. The empirical study of female responses to MCB is hindered because its experimental manipulation is difficult. We have developed a technique for reducing, with minimal disturbance, the frequency of MCB in the true bug Stenomacra marginella. Here, we test the idea that, in a polygamous species like S. marginella, sexual selection favours males whose MCB induces females to increase copula duration (thereby increasing the amount of sperm and accessory substances transferred), reduce their sexual receptivity to additional males and increase their rate of oviposition. Males prevented from performing MCB increased their rate of attempts to perform MCB. Copulations with previously mated females were of longer duration than those with virgin females, probably as a male adaptation for sperm competition, and MCB could have played a role in inducing this effect. Partial or total experimental reduction of MCB frequency had no effect on remating rates, because most females accepted remating at the first opportunity (1 day after their first copula). The probability of egg laying was reduced in females whose first mate was partially prevented from performing copulatory courtship, but not in females whose first mate was completely prevented from performing copulatory courtship. This is an intriguing result and further experiments are needed to understand its causes. We hypothesize that MCB evolved as a result of sexual selection.  相似文献

Litchi downy blight caused by Peronophythora litchii is one of the most destructive diseases suffered by litchi in China. This study has evaluated the activities of the fungicides dimethomorph (DMM), azoxystrobin (AZB), famoxadone (FMD), metalaxyl (MTL), cymoxanil (CYX) and mancozeb (MCB) on the mycelial growth, sporulation, zoospores release, and germination of sporangia as well as of cystospores of P. litchii . Dimethomorph and MTL inhibited mycelial growth more effectively than the other fungicides tested. Mycelial growth was affected less by MCB, and only weakly by AZB, FMD and CYX. Sporangia production was more strongly reduced by DMM and MTL than by AZB, FMD, CYX or MCB. Zoospore release from the sporangia was most sensitive to AZB and FMD, less sensitive to MCB and insensitive to DMM, MTL and CYX. Direct germination of sporangia of P. litchii was the most strongly inhibited by AZB and FMD, followed by DMM and MCB, whilst the sensitivity of this life stage to MTL and CYX was relatively low. Germination of encysted zoospores of P. litchii was the most sensitive to AZB and FMD, followed by DMM. Mancozeb was moderately active, while MTL and CYX did not inhibit this development stage. This is the first report on the in vitro response of the litchi pathogen, P. litchii, to fungicides. These findings can be valuable tools in setting up efficient disease management programmes to control litchi downy blight.  相似文献

The relationship between geomagnetic disturbances (with amplitudes above 50 nT) and the sudden unexplained death (SUD) of epileptic adults has been controversial up to now. In an autopsy-based cohort study (from 1964 to 1992) 15 epileptic children with SUD aged 1-14 years were compared to 63 epileptic children whose cause of death was known (KCD). The time of death as well as two international geomagnetic indices were assessed: Bartels' planetary 3-h signs (Kp) for the time of death and 2 h before, and the mean planetary daily amplitudes (Ap) on the day of death and on the 4 critical days before (and on the 4 post-mortem days as a control). Among the 15 SUD patients 9 died between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. (universal time) whereas the KCD group showed an approximately uniform distribution of the time of death ( P = 0.026, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test). The Kp signs at death and 2 h before as well as the Ap indices at death and for the 4 pre-mortem days or after were not different in comparisons between the SUD and the KCD group ( P > 0.2, Mann-Whitney test). Furthermore the frequency of sudden storm commencement at death and for the 4 days before revealed no deviation of the SUD (26.7%) from the KCD group (23.8%) ( P > 0.2, Fisher test). The results do not support the hypothesis that geomagnetic disturbances are a risk factor for the sudden unexplained death of epileptic children.  相似文献

We have previously reported the disappearance of a specific strain degrading chlorobenzene from a functionally stable bioreactor. In the present work, we investigated this species succession and isolated a new dominant strain, identified as Pandoraea pnomenusa sp. strain MCB032. A specific 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probe was designed and validated to identify strain MCB032 using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). The results confirmed the presence of strain MCB032 in samples collected over time, and showed that it was primarily located within the biofilm. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) provided evidence that the species succession occurred early in the operating period. The application of these biomolecular tools highlighted the remarkable stability of this new strain during the 15 months of reactor operation. The succession was attributed to the competitive kinetic behaviour of strain MCB032, which exhibited faster growth (micro(max) = 0.34 h(-1)) and higher substrate affinity (K(s) = 0.35 mg L(-1)) than strain JS150. Finally, this study contributed to the characterisation of the recently established Pandoraea genus, an emerging group in the biodegradation field.  相似文献

Birds rely on precise navigational mechanisms, especially for long-distance migrations. One debated mechanism is their use of the geomagnetic field. It is unclear if and how different species of birds are using intensity or inclination (or both) for navigation. Previous geomagnetic modelling research is based on static geomagnetic data despite a temporally and spatially varying geomagnetic field. Animals supposedly have a high sensitivity to those changes of the geomagnetic field. In order to understand how birds respond in real-time to its temporal variation, we need to use accurate geomagnetic information linked to the position of the bird through co-location in space and time.We developed a data-driven approach to simulate geomagnetic migratory strategies, using, for the first time, accurate contemporaneous geomagnetic data obtained from Swarm satellites of the European Space Agency. We created biased correlated random walk models which were based on both GPS data from greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) during fall migration between north-west Russia and central Europe and contemporaneous satellite geomagnetic data. Different strategies of geomagnetic navigation associated with different geomagnetic values were translated into probability surfaces, built from geomagnetic data, and included into the random walk models. To evaluate which strategy was most likely, we compared the measured GPS trajectories to the simulated trajectories using different trajectory similarity measurements. We propose this as an approach to track many bird species for future comparative studies.We found that navigational strategies in these geese using magnetic intensity were closer to the observed data than those using inclination. This was the case in 80% of the best models and is an indication that it should be more beneficial for these geese to use intensity over inclination. Additionally, our results supported results from a previous study, that navigation based on taxis and compass mechanisms were more similar to the observed data than other mechanisms. We therefore suggest that these geese may use a combination of these strategies for navigation at a broad-scale. Overall, it seems likely that for successful navigation to the target location more than one mechanism is necessary; indicating a multifactorial navigation mechanism of these migratory geese in the study area. The satellite geomagnetic data are available at a higher temporal resolution and the use significantly improved the fit of the modelled simulations in comparison to the modelled geomagnetic data. Therefore, using annotated geomagnetic data could greatly improve the modelling of animal geomagnetic navigation in future research.  相似文献

A large variety of animals has the ability to sense the geomagnetic field and utilize it as a source of directional (compass) information. It is not known by which biophysical mechanism this magnetoreception is achieved. We investigate the possibility that magnetoreception involves radical-pair processes that are governed by anisotropic hyperfine coupling between (unpaired) electron and nuclear spins. We will show theoretically that fields of geomagnetic field strength and weaker can produce significantly different reaction yields for different alignments of the radical pairs with the magnetic field. As a model for a magnetic sensory organ we propose a system of radical pairs being 1) orientationally ordered in a molecular substrate and 2) exhibiting changes in the reaction yields that affect the visual transduction pathway. We evaluate three-dimensional visual modulation patterns that can arise from the influence of the geomagnetic field on radical-pair systems. The variations of these patterns with orientation and field strength can furnish the magnetic compass ability of birds with the same characteristics as observed in behavioral experiments. We propose that the recently discovered photoreceptor cryptochrome is part of the magnetoreception system and suggest further studies to prove or disprove this hypothesis.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of lifelong exposure to reversed geomagnetic and zero geomagnetic fields (the latter means absence of geomagnetic field) on the life history of Daphnia carinata King from Australia and Daphnia magna Straus from Europe. Considerable deviation in the geomagnetic field from the usual strength, leads to a decrease in daphnia size and life span. Reduced brood sizes and increased body length of neonates are observed in D. magna exposed to unusual magnetic background. The most apparent effects are induced by zero geomagnetic field in both species of Daphnia. A delay in the first reproduction in zero geomagnetic field is observed only in D. magna. No adaptive maternal effects to reversed geomagnetic field are found in a line of D. magna maintained in these magnetic conditions for eight generations. Integrally, the responses of D. magna to unusual geomagnetic conditions are more extensive than that in D. carinata. We suggest that the mechanism of the effects of geomagnetic field reversal on Daphnia may be related to differences in the pattern of distribution of the particles that have a magnetic moment, or to moving charged organic molecules owing to a change in combined outcome and orientation of the geomagnetic field and Earth's gravitational field. The possibility of modulation of self-oscillating processes with changes in geomagnetic field is also discussed.  相似文献

A mixed-culture biofilm (MCB) model is available which describes the progression of biofilm thickness and the spatial distribution and development in time of dissolved and paniculate components in the biofilm. The MCB model is able to predict the physico-chemical conditions at the interface between the biofilm and the solid surface, on which the biofilm grows, as a function of the conditions in the bulk fluid, the microbial composition of the biofilm, and the transport and transformation processes which take place in the biofilm. The mass balance equations of the MCB model are generally valid and can be applied to almost any microbial system if its kinetics and stoichiometry can be provided. AQUASIM is a new computer program for the identification and simulation of aquatic systems. The program solves the equations of the MCB model. It has a window-type user interface and includes routines for simulation, sensitivity analysis, automatic parameter estimation and data fitting. The MCB model has been developed and is primarily used in the field of waste water treatment. However, under certain conditions and with some additional simplifications this model can also be used for the investigation of biofouling and biocorrosion problems. The possibilities and limitations of the application of the MCB model and of AQUASIM to this type of problem are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) banding approaches are standard for the exact characterization of simple, complex, and even cryptic chromosomal aberrations within the human genome. The most frequently applied FISH banding technique is the multicolor banding approach, also abbreviated as m-band, MCB, or in its whole genomic variant multitude MCB (mMCB). MCB allows the differentiation of chromosome region-specific areas at the GTG band and sub-band level and is based on region-specific microdissection libraries, producing changing fluorescence intensity ratios along the chromosomes. The latter are used to assign different pseudocolors to specific chromosomal regions. Here we present the first bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) mapped, comprehensive, genome-wide human MCB probe set. All 169 region-specific microdissection libraries were characterized in detail for their size and the regions of overlap. In summary, the unique possibilities of the MCB technique to characterize chromosomal breakpoints in one FISH experiment are now complemented by the feature of being anchored within the human DNA sequence at the BAC level.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed that allows tracing the time evolution of a current sheet from a relatively thick current configuration with isotropic distributions of the pressure and temperature in an extremely thin current sheet, which plays a key role in geomagnetic processes. Such a configuration is observed in the Earth’s magnetotail in the stage preceding a large-scale geomagnetic disturbance (substorm). Thin current sheets are reservoirs of the free energy released during geomagnetic disturbances. The time evolution of the components of the pressure tensor caused by changes in the structure of the current sheet is investigated. It is shown that the pressure tensor in the current sheet evolves in two stages. In the first stage, a current sheet with a thickness of eight to ten proton Larmor radii forms. This stage is characterized by the plasma drift toward the current sheet and the Earth and can be described in terms of the Chu–Goldberger–Low approximation. In the second stage, an extremely thin current sheet with an anisotropic plasma pressure tensor forms, due to which the system is maintained in an equilibrium state. Estimates of the characteristic time of the system evolution agree with available experimental data.  相似文献
