Colloidal‐size synthetic‐polymer microspheres of three sizes (0.15, 0.31 and 0.70‐µm diameter) were each suspended in liquids of three different colors (clear, tan and dark brown) at a range of concentrations. The samples were presented to panelists in a viewing box. Visual‐threshold determinations were made for each of the nine sample sets using the ascending method of limits (AMLs) and bright illumination (1,192 lux) with each of the three viewing backgrounds: black velvet, white cotton and white taffeta. The thresholds were much more similarly expressed as turbidimeter observations than as either weight or number concentration. With the black‐velvet background, the thresholds ranged from 0.206 to 2.190 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). With white cotton and white taffeta, they were considerably higher (P < 0.001), ranging from 1.97 to 41.00 and 2.97 to 34.40 NTU, respectively. This large difference appears to be a matter of contrast – scattered white light is much easier to perceive against a dark background.  相似文献

A testing procedure was developed to determine the concentration range including an absolute or difference threshold for a compound added to a background medium. Samples were arranged into three groups, each containing a labeled control and three randomly arranged samples. Random samples in each group included an unlabeled control and two samples containing adjacent concentration levels from a series of six increasing concentrations of the added substance. Groups were presented in ascending order by concentration of the added substance. Within each group, panelists rated each sample on a nine-point intensity scale of difference from the labeled control. Group specific psychological errors in judgement were reduced by subtracting the unlabeled controls from the sample scores. Analysis of variance was applied to these data yielding separate estimates of variance for sample scores within groups. Sets of t-tests from paired comparisons were used to construct a confidence statement regarding a threshold interval.  相似文献

A sensory threshold can be defined generally as a stimulus intensity that produces a response in half of the trials. The definition of the population threshold is discussed. Five main classical statistical procedures for estimating thresholds are reviewed. They are the probit, the logistic, the Spearman-Karber, the moving average and the up-and-down procedures. Some new developments in statistical methods for estimating thresholds are outlined. The newly developed methods include the generalized probit and logistic models, the model based on the Beta-Binomial distribution, the trimmed Spearman-Karber method, the kernel method and the sigmoidally constrained maximum likelihood estimation method. The authors propose a new procedure based on the Beta-Binomial distribution for estimating population threshold.  相似文献

A data reduction protocol was designed to minimize distortion inherent in sensory data. Following removal of nonexistent attributes and treatment levels, extreme value analysis and distribution comparisons combined with graphical respresentations, facilitated elimination of inconsistent (with respect to overall consensus) panelists. Application of a calibration factor showed superresponsive panelists (those with intensity values consistently higher than other panelists) were among the most accurate and thus were retained in spite of their tendency to produce extreme value data. Panelists that consistently produced a narrow variance around the overall mean and rarely produced extreme values were classified as noncomittal and removed. Analysis of variance calls for a split plot design; blocks (sessions) and treatments in main plot, and panelists in subplot. In general, the subplot can be ignored. These methods are suggested for evaluating panelists' training needs; and for eliminating data that distorts the statistical analysis.  相似文献

Studies investigating the effect of rate of temperature change on thermal thresholds have used a variety of different methods and threshold combinations, and many display incomplete reporting of statistical analyses. It has been suggested that C- and Adelta-fibre mediated thresholds differ in their reaction to different rates of temperature change. Ten healthy female volunteers (aged 18-26 years; mean 21 +/- S.D. 2.53) undertook cold sensation (CS), warm sensation (WS), cold pain (CP) and heat pain (HP) threshold determinations on the thenar eminence of the dominant hand. Rates of temperature change of 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 4 degrees C/s were used, with a modified method of limits. Adaptation temperature was 32 degrees C and thermode size 3 cm x 3 cm. Results showed a significant increase in WS, HP and CP thresholds with increased rates of temperature change (all p < 0.001), but no significant change for CS (p = 0.653). These results suggest that thresholds with a C-fibre component (WS, HP and CP) and those that are Adelta-fibre mediated (CS) behave differently. A traditional explanation of measurement artefact alone is insufficient in rationalizing these results, with additional factors potentially involved. Slow rates of temperature change were shown to reduce mean intra-individual differences in recorded threshold values, and also to abolish ceiling effects with HP threshold determinations. Clinically, therefore, using slow rates of temperature change with method of limits has a range of benefits over and above simply minimizing measurement artefact.  相似文献

In chernozem soil, vanillin was decomposed via vanillic and protocatechuic acid before the aromatic ring opened. The rate curves of oxygen consumption for the oxidation of vanillin were seen to have more than one maximum. During incubation of the soil with vanillin, the number of bacteria increased, especially those capable of utilizing vanillin as the sole carbon source. Of the 21 such strains isolated, 15 were identified asPseudomonas sp., five asCellulomonas sp. and one asAchromobacter sp. It was found that the course of the oxidation of vanillin varied at different p.H values and in different strains was found that the course of the oxidation of vanillin varied at different p.H values and in different strains of bacteria. In some cases, the phase of the oxidation of vanillin to vanillic acid was clearly differentiated from the subsequent decomposition of vanillic acid.  相似文献

Effects of vanillin on UV killing of umuC mutant strains of E. coli were investigated in order to analyze the antimutagenic role of vanillin in mutagenesis. UV-irradiated uvrA umuC cells showed higher survival when plated on medium containing vanillin rather than medium without vanillin. This increased survival associated with exposure to vanillin was observed more clearly in uvrA umuC lexA(Ind-) and uvrA umuC recF strains. However, the effect was inhibited by additional recB recC mutations and completely blocked by an additional recA mutation. As far as tested the increased survival of UV-treated cells by vanillin was dependent on a capacity for genetic recombination. The effect of vanillin on recombination frequency between 2 plasmid DNA, pATH4 (Cmr Tcs) and pBMX7 (Apr Tcs), in a uvrA umuC background was investigated. A significantly higher frequency of plasmid recombination was observed when vanillin was present in the culture medium. These findings suggest that the antimutagenic effect of vanillin is the result of enhancement of a recA-dependent, error-free, pathway of post-replication repair.  相似文献

利用听觉诱发电位记录技术研究了褐菖鲉(Sebasticus marmoratus)的听觉阈值。通过采用听觉生理系统记录和分析了8尾褐菖鲉对频率范围在100—1000 Hz的7种不同频率的声音刺激的诱发电位反应。结果表明, 褐菖鲉的听觉阈值在整体上随着频率增加而增加, 对100—300 Hz的低频声音信号敏感, 最敏感频率为150 Hz, 对应的听觉阈值为70 dB re 1 μPa。褐菖鲉的听觉敏感区间与其发声频率具有较高的匹配性, 表明其声讯交流的重要性。同时, 人为低频噪声可能对其声讯交流造成影响。  相似文献

1980—1983年在河北省饶阳县及安徽省濉溪县的不同的土壤肥力类型、不同的棉花品种和不同的栽培管理条件下进行了模拟为害和自然为害的试验,旨在确定第二代棉铃虫Heliothis armigera(Hübner)数量与棉花Gossypium hirsutum L.产量和质量的关系。试验结果表明,棉花对于第二代棉铃虫为害的补偿力很强,这种补偿力随着土壤肥力的提高而增强。棉花品种、年份以及栽培管理方法对补偿力的影响属于次要。通过组建的一个静态模型,收进了二代棉铃虫防治的直接收益与代价以及间接收益与代价,算得高、低肥力地的第二代经济阈值,百株累计卵量分别为332粒和34粒。产量水平在80—90斤的中等偏低肥力地,其阈值可定为60粒。  相似文献

 通过模拟实验研究了不同浓度的香草醛对杉木(Cunninghamia lanceolata)幼苗养分吸收和根系活力的影响,结果发现,当浓度为1 mmol·L-1时,香草醛能够显著抑制杉木幼苗对NO-3、NH+4、SO24-及HPO24-离子的吸收和根系活力(p<0.01),而浓度为1×10-2 mmol·L-1时香草醛却促进了杉木幼苗对HPO24-离子的吸收(p<0.01)。这说明高浓度的香草醛能够通过化感作用对杉木幼苗产生影响,降低杉木幼苗的根系活力,进而减少了杉木幼苗对养分离子的吸收,从而影响了杉木幼苗的生长。  相似文献

Difference taste thresholds, expressed as jnd values or Weberratios, were determined for sucrose in water and in orange juiceat laboratories in Sweden, U.S.A., Poland and Switzerland usinga method of constant stimuli. The following total arithmeticmean values of all 172 individual jnd values were obtained:0.266 and 0.400% sucrose at 2 and 5% sucrose in water, respectively;0.977 and 1.19% sucrose at 1.5 and 3.75% sucrose in orange juice,respectively. The frequency distributions of the individualvalues were asymetrical and showed a large variation among subjects.The results of some additional experiments at 2 and 5% sucrosein orange juice, performed only by the Polish laboratory, arereported also. Significance analyses performed according to one parametricmethod (t-test), using pooled data of groups of subjects, andone non-parametric method (Mann-Whitney's U-test), using individualthreshold values, gave the same conclusion in practically allcases. The data indicated that females had slightly lower average discriminationthresholds than males. There was a significant degree of correlationbetween subjects' discriminatory ability at different concentrationsof sucrose in each of the two media. Few significant differences between the laboratories were foundfor sucrose in water, whereas for sucrose in orange juice thefollowing rank order, from lowest to highest average jnd value,among the laboratories was obtained for both concentrationstested: Poland < U.S.A. < Sweden = Switzerland. Analysis of variance was applied to 3,107 magnitude estimations (ME) obtained upon 173 panelists (16 panels) evaluating the areas of 18 geometric figures. As Butler et al. (1987) pointed out, if a full ANOVA is applied to the values transformed to logarithms, there is no need to re-scale, i.e., normalize the values as is usually done. In fact, even with re-scaling, total variability is not accounted for adequately unless all the sources of variation are partitioned out in the analysis. Under some circumstances, re-scaling is needed: some laboratories re-scale to the arithmetic mean, others to the geometric one. The error was somewhat greater when the data were re-scaled to the arithmetic mean. The residuals of the ME values transformed to logarithms conformed essentially to a normal distribution. Kurtosis was greater, 5.30; otherwise the distribution was close to a log normal one. The average coefficient of variation was <10%.  相似文献

The ability of panelists to distinguish between samples of apple juice with two levels of added sucrose (0.1 and 0.9 g/100 mL) or NaCl (0.05 and 0.14 g/100 mL) was determined using a modified signal detection technique. Samples at various temperatures (6, 24, or 50C) were presented with various rinse conditions. Sometimes a water rinse (6, 24, or 50C) was presented between samples and somtimes not. R-index values were calculated to predict the ability of panelists to distinguish between samples. No temperature effect was found for sweetness difference tests; however, R-indices showed that salty differences in apple juice were more distinguishable at a sample temperature of 24C than at 6 or 50C. Samples temperature had a greater effect than rinse condition (temperature or no rinse) on discrimination between samples differing in NaCl concentration.  相似文献

Biofouling is a serious problem on filter membranes of water purification systems due to formation of bacterial biofilms, which can be detrimental to the membrane performance. Biofouling occurs on membrane surface and therefore greatly influences the physical and chemical aspects of the surface. Several membranes including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were used to learn about the anti-biofouling properties of vanillin affecting the membrane performances. Vanillin has been recognized as a potential quorum quenching compound for Aeromonas hydrophila biofilms. The initial attachment and dynamics of biofilm growth were monitored using scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Biofilm quantities were measured using a plate count method and total protein determinations. Vanillin addition was effective in the prevention of biofilm formation on the tested membrane surfaces. Among the membranes, RO membranes made with cellulose acetate showed the most substantial reduction of biofilm formation by addition of vanillin. The biofilm reduction was confirmed by the results of surface coverage, biomass and protein accumulation. The HPLC spectrum of the spent culture with vanillin addition showed that vanillin may interfere with quorum sensing molecules and thus prevent the formation of the biofilms.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution of the sensory panelists' ability to detect differences and to improve the triangle test by minimizing unnecessary guessing. The triangle test was modified to include the use of economic incentives through which panelists voluntarily revealed their ability to detect differences. Panelists were asked to estimate their ability to detect differences and the probability of identifying the odd sample in a triangle test. They were then organized into three ability groups according to their responses. Double triangle tests, followed by triangle tests with economic incentives, were used to evaluate a cereal product and a beverage. The ability to detect differences was modeled as a probability, and the distribution of panelists was estimated. The economic incentives test was more effective when used with the beverage in which differences were less difficult to detect. We found that the economic incentive test discouraged the panelists from guessing unnecessarily, thus increasing the motivation of the panelists to detect differences, and allowing researchers to determine the distribution of discrimination ability.  相似文献

The British Standards Institution and the International Standards Organization specify that when mixtures of tea and milk are to be evaluated sensorially, the tea should be added to the milk. Four cups of tea prepared by pouring the tea into the cup first (TIF) and four cups prepared by placing the milk in the cup first (MIF) were presented to 155 panelists in the dark. They were instructed to select by taste the four cups containing the MIF tea. The frequency of correct selection was well above the chance level, indicating that the panelists had detected a difference in flavor. The same task was performed by 131 panelists except they evaluated the tea in light. The panelists were not highly trained tea tasters; in fact, most were not regular drinkers of hot tea. Notwithstanding that, their discriminating power was sufficient to resolve the subtle differences which did exist.  相似文献

The replication variance of individual stimulus evaluations and scale utilization across a panelist's stimulus profile are simultaneously employed to develop statistics for assessing performance of panelists. The approach provides opportunities for comparison of panelists to each other, determination of attributes for which panelist confusion is observed, isolation of stimuli presenting unstable properties, and engagement of influence weights (based on relative precision) in subsequent analyses of data. Although the methodology has been developed for applications involving sensory panelists, the statistical concepts may be extended to other data collection scenarios involving replicated determinations from bounded quantitative measurement scales.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of this study was to determine a low disease activity threshold - a 28-joint disease activity score (DAS28) value - for the decision to maintain unchanged disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) treatment in rheumatoid arthritis patients, based on expert opinion.

Methods

Nine hundred and sixty-seven case scenarios with various levels for each component of the DAS28 (resulting in a disease activity score between 2 and 3.2) were presented to 44 panelists. For each scenario, panelists had to decide whether or not DMARD treatment (excluding steroids) could be maintained unchanged. In each scenario, for decision, the participants were given the DAS28 parameters, without knowledge of the resultant DAS28. The relationship between panelists' decision, DAS28 value, and components of the score were analysed by multiple logistic regression analysis. Each panelist analysed 160 randomised scenarios. Intra-rater and inter-rater reproducibility were assessed.

Results

Forty-four panelists participated in the study. Inter-panelist agreement was good (κ = 0.63; 95% confidence interval = 0.61 to 0.65). Intra-panelist agreement was excellent (κ = 0.87; 95% confidence interval = 0.82 to 0.92). Quasi-perfect agreement was observed for DAS28 ≤ 2.4, less pronounced between 2.5 and 2.9, and almost no agreement for DAS28 > 3.0. For values below 2.5, panelists agreed to maintain unchanged DMARDs; for values above 2.5, discrepancies occurred more frequently as the DAS28 value increased. Multivariate analysis confirmed the relationship between panelist's decision, DAS28 value and components of the DAS28. Between DAS28 of 2.4 and 3.2, a major determinant for panelists' decision was swollen joint count. Female and public practice physicians decided more often to maintain treatment unchanged.

Conclusions

As a conclusion, panelists suggested that in clinical practice there is no need to change DMARD treatment in rheumatoid arthritis patients with DAS28 ≤ 2.4.  相似文献
