Spatially explicit predator–prey interactions can alter the predatory potential of natural enemies augmented through conservation biological control. To test hypotheses regarding such interactions and predatory efficiency, we used a combination of molecular techniques and mark–release–recapture to study the foraging behaviour of a generalist carabid predator, Poecilus cupreus , in response to spatial patterns of its cereal aphid prey ( Metapolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae ). Beetle and aphid numbers were measured across two grids of sampling locations, within which aphid spatial pattern had been manipulated to generate patchy and more homogenous distributions. Aphid consumption was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) of beetle gut contents, using an aphid-specific monoclonal antibody. Movement and distribution patterns suggest that P. cupreus does not aggregate at, nor instigate prey-taxis within, aphid patches. However, more than two-thirds of the 2169 P. cupreus tested by ELISA had consumed aphids and the proportion of beetles containing aphid proteins was positively related to aphid density. Against expectation, the proportion of predators feeding on aphids was greatest where prey were homogenously distributed, and this was attributed to the loss of partial refuges for prey in aphid patches. The functional value of this type of uniform foraging strategy is ideally suited to early colonization of the crop habitat, when aphid numbers are low, before populations build up and form strong spatial patterns.  相似文献

Exclusion barriers were used to manipulate numbers of polyphagous invertebrate predators so that their impact on cereal aphids and consequently wheat yield and quality could be examined. Experiments were conducted within the framework of the LINK Integrated Farming Systems Project which allowed comparisons to be made between the integrated and conventional farming systems under examination on a study farm in Hampshire, UK. Only in 1995 were the numbers of aphids per tiller, the aphid peak and rate of increase to the peak significantly greater in the exclusion areas where the density of polyphagous predators had been reduced. The maximum increase in aphids as a result of excluding polyphagous predators was 31%, which was equivalent to 130 aphid days. However, the polyphagous predators did not reduce the number of tillers infested. The relatively low impact of polyphagous predators was attributed to the aphid population phenology and greater effects may have been found had aphids infested the crops earlier in their development. Sowing date was shown to govern the time over which a crop may be susceptible to yield loss from aphids, with later-drilled crops being more susceptible to late-summer aphid infestations. Aphid numbers rarely affected grain yield but were found to be related to some grain quality parameters, but reducing polyphagous predators had no direct impact on grain yield or quality even where the aphid burden increased. The peak period of activity and density differed between the species of Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Araneae consequently influencing their relationship with the aphids. Some negative correlations were found between these groups of polyphagous predators and aphids. Species composition and abundance differed between fields thereby influencing the level of aphid predation. The exclusion barriers were most effective at reducing numbers of Carabidae although numbers of Staphylinidae and Araneae were also reduced. The efficiency of fenced pitfall traps for estimating the density of commonly occurring epigeal predatory beetles was examined using mark-release-recapture. Most beetles of those recovered were recaptured within one week of their release. For seven of the ten species tested recapture rates were over 70%, with higher rates for the larger species. The predatory arthropod species composition captured using fenced pitfall traps was compared to unfenced pitfall traps in winter wheat, spring barley and winter oilseed rape. Compositional analysis revealed that the dominance structure of seven carabid beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) taxa differed between the trap types and month of sampling in winter wheat and spring barley, but differences were small with the exception of a few taxa. Linear relationships between the two techniques were found for some carabid and rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae). The dominance structure of seven linyphiid spider (Araneae: Linyphiidae) taxa differed between the two trap types in wheat but not barley, although large differences were restricted to two taxa. No linear relationships between the two techniques were found for any of the Linyphiidae examined. Rove beetles were more effectively sampled using the fenced compared to unfenced pitfall traps.  相似文献

Arable land typically harbours communities of polyphagous invertebrate natural enemies, among them numerous soil-surface dwelling predators such as ground beetles (Carabidae) and spiders (Lycosidae, Linyphiidae). Numbers of these predators were experimentally manipulated in a winter wheat field in order to study the predation impact of a generalist predator assemblage on herbivorous insects, the possible interferences among the predators concerned, and subsequent effects on wheat plant parameters. Removing ground beetles doubled numbers of Lycosidae indicative of intraguild interference between these two predator groups. Aphid densities were highest in carabid removal plots implying a substantial predation impact of ground beetles on the pest population. The predation impact of ground beetles was strongest earlier and disappeared later in the season. In mid-season, at intermediate aphid densities, the combined impact of carabid beetles and spiders appeared to be responsible for the reduction in aphid abundance. This result was probably due to a biomass effect rather than to a synergistic effect of the predator community. Thysanoptera decreased when spiders were removed (perhaps because spiders were preying on a predator of thrips), while Cicadellidae and Delphacidae showed no effect at all. The rise of aphid numbers in carabid removal plots corresponded to an increase in protein content of the wheat grains, while other plant parameters such as plant numbers and grain mass were not affected. In conclusion, this study provided field evidence for intraguild interference among generalist ground predators in arable land. Despite this interference the polyphagous predator community was able to depress numbers of aphids in winter wheat, a result cascading down to plant quality parameters.  相似文献

The effects of straw baling or incorporation, combined with ploughing, non-inversion tillage, or direct drilling on the incidence of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), were investigated in plots of winter barley. Virus infection was more prevalent after ploughing (> 40% of the plot area damaged) than after non-inversion tillage (9 – 24%) or direct drilling (< 3%). For each cultivation method, more infection was associated with straw baling than with straw incorporation. There was a strong negative correlation between plot yields and the incidence of BYDV(r= -0.87). Monthly pitfall sampling of non-specific aphid predators showed that the population activity of several taxa (e.g. Linyphiidae, and the larger species of adult and larval Carabidae and Staphylinidae) declined for a short period in autumn-winter following cultivation. The overall treatment-ranking for numbers of predators in autumn (direct drilled > non-inversion > ploughed) was the opposite of subsequent virus infection. The possible roles of aphid predators and other biological mechanisms in determining the observed effects on BYDV, are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Generalist predators and parasitoids are considered to be important regulators of aphids. The former not only feed on these pests, but might also consume parasitoids at all stages of development. This direct or coincidental interference affects the natural control of aphids, the scale of which is largely unknown, and it has rarely been examined under natural conditions. Here, molecular diagnostics were used to track trophic interactions in an aphid-parasitoid-generalist predator community during the build-up of a cereal aphid population. We found that generalist predators, principally carabid and staphylinid beetles as well as linyphiid spiders, had strong trophic links to both parasitoids and aphids. Remarkably, more than 50% of the parasitoid DNA detected in predators stems from direct predation on adult parasitoids. The data also suggest that coincidental intraguild predation is common too. Generalist predators, hence, disrupt parasitoid aphid control, although the levels at which the predators feed on pests and parasitoids seem to vary significantly between predator taxa. Our results suggest that taxon-specific trophic interactions between natural enemies need to be considered to obtain a more complete understanding of the route to effective conservation biological control.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine if coccinellids adjusted their distribution within spring wheat fields in response to spatial variation cereal aphid density in the fields and to describe the patterns of cereal aphid population growth that resulted. Field experiments were completed in which the physical dimensions of patches infested with cereal aphids, cereal aphid density, and access to patches by coccinellids were varied. Aphid infestations consisted of naturally occurring densities (natural patches) and much greater densities created by supplementing patches with aphids (supplemented patches). Coccinellids were denied access to some supplemented patches (exclusion patches) but allowed unlimited access to others. Densities of adult Hippodamia convergens and Coccinella septempunctata were correlated with aphid density in patches whereas density of Coleomegilla maculata was not. Aggregation by coccinellids was independent of patch area. The realized aphid population growth rate (r) was lower in supplemented than natural patches in all four trials but was significantly lower in only one trial. The lower r in supplemented patches was not exclusively caused by coccinellid predation, and emigration of aphids from patches probably also contributed. r was significantly greater in exclusion patches than supplemented and natural patches, indicating that coccinellids markedly reduced aphid numbers in patches even when aphid density was extremely high. Abstract: Several authors have indicated that carabid beetles offer potential as predators of insect pests on arable crops, but this potential is reduced by their limited ability to climb the crop plants. In the current investigation an initial laboratory experiment indicated that seven species of carabid beetles commonly found in arable fields in the UK would feed on both aphid and collembolan prey. Pterostichus cupreus L. and Bembidion guttula Fabr. were found to accept both live and dead aphids and collembolans. In further laboratory investigations P. cupreus exhibited greater consumption of the cereal aphid Metopolophium dirhodum Walker than the alternative prey species Heteromurus nitidus , Templeton (Collembola, Entomobryidae) and there was some indication of preference for the aphid prey as these were often consumed first. Significantly more handling time was required for the consumption of M. dirhodum compared to H. nitidus. The treatments where P. cupreus was given a diet of aphids or collembolans prior to the prey choice experiment, did not appear to influence the number or type of prey items consumed.
Using a four-arm olfactometer P. cupreus reacted positively to the volatiles from collembolans, but gave a less clear response to those from the cereal aphid M. dirhodum . In an artificial field arena P. cupreus readily climbed barley plants in search of M. dirhodum , perhaps as a response to volatile emissions, but this behaviour changed when H. nitidus were introduced onto the substrate of the arena. Although the current results indicated that P. cupreus has potential for the control of cereal aphids, the presence of alternative prey appeared to reduce this potential and suggest that the carabid is an opportunistic feeder.  相似文献

A video technique that allows simultaneous behavioural observations of several experimental replicates under field and laboratory conditions is described. The technique was used to analyse predation risk of parasitised aphids in a sugar beet field. The images of 16 black and white video cameras were recorded by a video multiplexer in combination with a time-lapse video recorder. Each camera was weather protected and equipped with a single infrared diode to allow observations during night times. Single leaves carrying aphid mummies only or mummies and unparasitised aphids were monitored. All colonies were exposed to predation and parasitation by the community of natural enemies in the field. Colonies with mummies and unparasitised aphids were visited significantly more often by predators than those without additional aphids. Predators also stayed significantly longer in patches with unparasitised aphids. Although an equal proportion of aphid mummies were destroyed in both treatments, the video analysis showed differences in predator species spectrum between treatments. In patches with aphids, coccinellid and hemipteran predators preyed on mummies, while in patches with only mummies, chrysopids accounted for most of the damage. The decrease in parasitoid survival could be attributed to the increasing number of predator visits in aphid patches and to a lesser extent to the decreasing number of unparasitised aphids (alternative prey). Parasitoid survival in colonies without alternative prey was correlated with the number of predator visits and the time predators spent on a leaf.Continuous video observations gave additional behavioural information for the interpretation of field data. Other prospective research fields for the use of the multi video camera technique are outlined and general advantages and disadvantages are discussed.  相似文献

The potential of predators to impact the establishment of aphid vectors and the spread of beet yellows virus in sugar beet was examined. Myzus persicae carrying beet yellows virus (BYV) were released on six interior sites and six edge sites in each of four fields at the end of May. Aphids established at low densities and BYV was spread in circular patches around the infested plants at all sites. The number of diseased plants per patch at the end of September ranged from a field-average of 130 to 210 in the four fields. There was a weak tendency towards better aphid establishment and greater virus spread in fields in less complex landscapes. Edge sites had less virus spread than interior sites in one field, more virus spread in two other fields, and there was no statistically significant difference in the fourth field. In the field where virus spread was lowest at edge sites, we used predator exclosure and direct observation to manipulate and quantify the effects of early season predation. On a warm day in early June, 81% ofAphis fabae exposed to predators on young beet plants disappeared during a 24 h period, compared to 10% of aphids protected by clipcages. Intermediate levels of predator exclusion, allowing aphids to walk away but restricting predator access, showed that predation was responsible for aphid disappearance.Cantharis lateralis L. (Coleoptera: Cantharidae) was the most frequently observed foliar predator (>90%). It was found eating aphids on several occasions. The incidence of predators was 1.8 per plant per h in the field interior and 3.8 per plant per h. near the edge. In the same field, aphids and virus were released in six edge and six interior sites, that were surrounded by 0.5 m high plastic open-top barriers (‘exclosures’). Pitfall trapping inside the barriers reduced potential soil predator densities to ca. one-tenth of the open field level and arrivals of flying predators were reduced. Inside the exclosures, aphid establishment was enhanced, and virus spread at exclosure sites was increased by about 50% compared to open sites. Foliar and pitfall sampling yielded the following predators:Cantharis lateralis, C. rufa L. (Coleoptera: Cantharidae),Coccinella septempunctata L.,C. undecimpunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae),Pterostichus cupreus (L.),Harpalus rufipes (de Geer),Patrobus atrorufus (Strom),Trechus quadristriatus (Schrk.),Bembidion lampros (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Carabidae). In a laboratory no-choice trial (with 10M. persicae /day offered), each of these species ate aphids with consumption rates varying from 1.7 to 9.2 aphids/day. The results show that early predation substantially impacted aphid establishment in one field, and resulted in reduced virus spread. Results in the other fields show that these results cannot be easily generalized.  相似文献

Small-sized predators in the aphidophagous guild of Aphis gossypii Glover colonies on hibiscus trees in Japan exploit aphids at low prey abundance. Scymnus (Pullus) posticalis Sicard beetles were the first predatory species to attack aphids in the spring, and their larvae co-occurred with larvae of Eupeodes freguens (Matsumura) syrphids in aphid-infested leaves of hibiscus for 3 weeks in absence of large-sized coccinellid predators. Larval interaction between Scymnus and syrphid predators was examined in relation to effectiveness of wax cover of Scymnus against predation from syrphids. Waxless first instar larvae were not protected but wax-covered larvae of second, third and fourth instars were protected from predation by syrphid larvae. The protection was lower in the second instar which has a thin wax cover and significantly higher in the third and fourth instars having a thick wax cover. In addition, larvae from which the wax was removed were significantly more vulnerable to predation. Vulnerability of Scymnus larvae to predation from syrphids was directly related to the thickness of wax cover. Results suggest that the wax cover of Scymnus larvae act as an effective defence mechanism against predation from syrphid larvae.  相似文献

Nocturnal predators are often overlooked in biological control studies, despite evidence that they can make important contributions to insect pest suppression in agroecosystems. Many sampling methods are only employed during the daytime hours due to limitations of time and labour. Additionally, different sampling methods can provide contrasting information about natural enemy community composition and relative abundance. Here, we use Aphis glycines and its arthropod predators as a model system to compare natural enemy community composition described by vacuum samples, direct observations and video observations across the diel cycle in soybean. All sampling methods identified several common taxa. Anthocorids were dominant in vacuum samples and direct observations, and both methods indicated that this taxa may be more active in the afternoon. In contrast, anthocorids were recorded infrequently on video, possibly due to their small size. On video samples, lacewing larvae were the most active taxa during the day and lacewing larvae, spiders, opiliones and carabids were the most active taxa at night. We directly observed 22 predation events on soybean aphid: 17 by anthocorids, two by chrysopid larvae, and one each by a coccinellid, spider and predatory mite. The differences between the sample methods suggest that vacuum samples may represent predator abundance more accurately, while video data may miss small predators, but can be used to better assess relative time spent foraging.  相似文献

Female Aphidoletes aphidimyza confronts serious challenges from both aphid prey and conspecifics. These challenges constitute strong selective pressures on the predatory midge to have an adaptive oviposition strategy. We did laboratory experiments to investigate clutch size of A. aphidimyza in response to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (density and age) and the presence of conspecific eggs (density) and larvae (age) in aphid colonies. The results of our study show that A. aphidimyza female adjusts its foraging effort by assessing the quality of prey patches. The number of eggs laid increased in response to aphid density. However, patches consisting of older aphids received fewer eggs. The number of eggs laid decreased in response to the presence of conspecific eggs, and in response to the presence of 2-day old conspecific larvae. Our study reveals deterrent effects on A. aphidimyza oviposition decisions on clutch size in response to older aphids and the presence of more conspecific eggs and older larvae.  相似文献

The abundance and species composition of syrphid adults in herbicide-treated and untreated headlands was recorded in a replicated within-field experiment conducted over a two-year period. The highest numbers of the most abundant syrphid species, Episyrphus balteatus, were recorded in the untreated headland strips. Analysis of the behaviour of the adult flies showed that they were retained in the untreated strips because they were foraging on the flowering non-crop plants. The distribution of syrphid eggs between herbicide treated and untreated headland replicates was examined. A significant positive relationship between the numbers of eggs per aphid and weed density was detected during June in the second year of the study. This is in part attributed to the tendency of Melanostoma females to oviposit on non-crop plants. The implications of the implementation of a modified herbicide regime in the headlands of cereal fields for the biological control of cereal aphids by syrphid larvae is discussed.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out in 1981-83 to assess the impact of polyphagous predators (e.g. Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Araneae) on populations of cereal aphids in spring barley in Sweden. Barriers were erected around mid-field and field-edge plots at different times during the aphids' establishment phase in order to manipulate the predation pressure during the aphid pre-peak period; predators were emigrating from field boundaries. Rhopalosiphum padi was the dominant species of cereal aphid in 1981 and 1982, and was abundant in both years. Reduction of the predation pressure resulted in R. padi populations that were two to six times larger compared with those in unenclosed control plots. Aphid populations were much larger when the predation pressure was reduced earlier in June than when this was done later, in both years, since late erection of barriers excludes fewer predators because most had already entered the enclosed areas. In 1983, R. padi and Sitobion avenae were equally common but occurred in low numbers, and the effects of reducing the predation pressure were less obvious. Bembidion spp. (B. lampros and B. quadrimaculatum) and linyphiid spiders were the most abundant predators during the early establishment phase of aphid populations in each year, and significant inverse correlations were found between peak numbers of R. padi per shoot and numbers of predators from these taxa in 1981 and 1982. Similar relationships were found between total aphids and numbers of Staphylinidae, B. quadrimaculatum and Coccinella septempunctata in 1983. It was concluded that differences between the manipulated numbers of polyphagous predators caused the observed differences in peak population levels of R.padiin 1981,1982 and to a lesser extent, 1983. Apparent levels of parasitism and fungal disease were low during the pre-peak period. Aphid specific predators, abundant after the peak, were considered partly responsible for the decline of aphid populations each year. The results are compared with those from similar experiments elsewhere with S. avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum in winter wheat. Reasons why the effects of polyphagous predators are greater, and occur over a much shorter period of time in Sweden are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated, within two cereal fields in Southern England, the within-canopy spatial distribution of the aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum in relation to crop yield and plant nitrogen. We extended the study to investigate the spatial distribution of aphids that fell to, or returned from, the ground in order to estimate availability of the within-canopy aphid population to ground-active predators. We revealed that crop canopy aphid spatial pattern was associated with nitrogen or yield. Differences were evident between species: S. avenae was generally negatively associated with yield or plant nitrogen, whilst M. dirhodum exhibited positive association. For both aphid species, we observed strong spatial pattern for aphids falling to the ground and conclude that this could, in part, mediate the effectiveness of ground-active predators as pest control agents.  相似文献

Large populations of natural enemies are the basis for natural pest control. Effects of mulch on predator–prey interactions in arable fields are poorly known, despite its potential to enhance ground‐dwelling predators and thereby reduce pest infestations. We studied the densities of predators and parasitoids, and their impact on cereal aphids in the presence and absence of mulch. Released populations of the bird cherry aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), and two naturally occurring aphid species, were monitored under experimentally reduced densities of: (i) ground‐dwelling predators, (ii) flying predators and parasitoids, and (iii) with straw mulch. The three treatments were applied in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design in a field of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The exclusion of ground‐dwelling predators increased aphid populations by 55% in June and 40% in July, respectively. Mulched plots had 25% lower aphid densities in June. This was presumably due to enhanced densities of spiders (Araneida) in mulched plots. The exclusion of flying predators and parasitoids led to 94% higher aphid populations in late July (109 vs. 56 individuals per 100 shoots), irrespective of mulch or ground predator manipulation. This was attributed to the larvae of gall midges Aphidoletes cf. aphidimyza (Rondani) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) and hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae). The results indicate that a scarcity of predators and a bare soil surface renders crops more susceptible to arthropod pests. Farming schemes should aim at enhancing both ground‐dwelling and flying predators for elevated levels of natural pest control.  相似文献

The species composition and relative abundance of predatory arthropod fauna were studied in organic strawberry fields in northwestern Turkey using sweep net sampling and pitfall trapping (activity density). Arachnida constituted 13.1 and 11.5% of the sweep net and pitfall trap catches, respectively. Among the predatory insects, the most abundant groups were Heteroptera (26.7%), Diptera (25.9%), Coleoptera (16.9%) and Orthoptera (10.8%) in sweep net samples. Coleoptera (84.2%) dominated the pitfall trap catches. Many aphid specific and polyphagous predators reached peak abundance during June and July. Pearson's two-tailed correlations showed a significant and positive relationship between syrphid, coccinellid or chrysopid predator numbers and strawberry aphid density. Aphid density was not significantly correlated with carabid or with nabid abundance. Examination of spatial distribution patterns of all predatory arthropod groups using Taylor's Power Law indicated that most arthropod predators, except carabids, exhibited aggregated dispersion patterns. Coccinellids changed their spatial patterns from a uniform to an aggregated distribution through the season. There was also a significant linear correlation between Anterastes sp. abundance (larvae+adults) and Isophya rectipennis+Poecilimon ricteri (larvae+adults) density at both locations. We observed, for the first time, Anterastes preying on Isophya and Poecilimon species. The seasonal abundance of the major predatory groups were described, and their potential importance in controlling strawberry aphid and other pests is discussed.  相似文献
