To understand the evolution of parental care, one needs to estimatethe payoffs from providing care for the offspring and the payoffsfrom terminating care and deserting them. These payoffs arerarely known. In this study we experimentally estimated therewards from brood desertion in a species that has a variablepattern of parental care. In particular, either the female or themale parent may desert the brood in Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus,so some broods are attended by one parent of either sex, whereasin other broods both parents stay with the brood until the chicks fledge.We created single males and single females by experimentallyremoving the other parent and the clutch. The expected rematingtime of males was significantly higher (median: 25.4 days) thanthat of the females (5.3 days, p <.0001). The expected rematingtime tended to increase over the breeding season in both sexes,although the increase was significant only in females. The newnest of remated males was closer to their previous territory (mean± SE, 46 ± 8 m) than that of the remated females(289 ± 57 m, p <.001). Hatching success of new nestswas not different between remated males and females. Our resultsdemonstrate that the remating opportunities are different formale and female Kentish plovers and these opportunities varyover the season. We propose that the remating opportunitieswere influenced by the male-biased adult sex ratio and the seasonaldecrease in the number of breeders. However, we stress thatmeasuring remating times is a more direct measure of matingopportunities than calculating the operational sex ratio.  相似文献

Previous work on the bicolor damselfish, a species with exclusivemale parental care of eggs, suggested that female mate choicewas based on male characteristics. The aims of this study wereto determine whether females discriminate among potential mateson the basis of courtship and, if so, to determine whether courtshipserves as an indicator of male parental quality. Observationsmade over two reproductive cycles showed that courtship ratesand mating success of individual males are positively correlatedand that males begin courting several days before females beginlaying eggs. Experimental manipulations showed that a male'scourtship rate is indicative of the subsequent egg survivalfrom his nest. We suggest that observed differences betweenmales in their courtship rates and parental ability may be aresult of differences in their energy reserves. Feeding rates and mass loss during chick rearing were comparedfor individually marked parents of male and female Common Murre(Uria aalge) chicks at Great Island, Newfoundland, Canada, from1997–2001. Both parents in this socially monogamous seabirdspecies share parental care duties until colony departure, afterwhich the single chick is fed only by its father. Because murresprovision their single chicks with one clearly visible fishper trip, it is possible to accurately determine whether parentsdifferentially feed male and female chicks. Based on slightlygreater mass of males in adulthood, possibly favored by sexdifferences in breeding roles, we predicted that male nestlingswould be fed more than females. Fathers' feeding rate to sons,but not daughters, increased with chick age, whereas maternalfeeding rate increased with chick age for both sexes. When year-correctedfeeding rates of pairs rearing both sexes were compared, bothmothers and fathers fed their sons significantly more than theirdaughters in the later part of the chick-rearing period. Moreover,parents rearing male chicks lost mass at a significantly higherrate than those rearing females. There was no difference infledging age for sons and daughters. These results indicatethat differential parental allocation occurs and has measurablecosts even in a species with only slight adult sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

There is little experimental evidence testing whether currentbrood size and past brood mortality influence mate desertion.In the cichlid Aequidens coeruleopunctatus both parents initiallydefend offspring. In a field study, all experimental broods,irrespective of initial brood size (222.9 ± 60.4, mean± SD), were manipulated to a size of 100 fry. Neitherthe duration nor investment of females in parental care differed between control and brood reduced pairs, even though care seemedcostly. On average, females lost 5.1 ± 4.8% of initialweight while guarding a brood until independence. In contrast,males with experimentally reduced broods guarded fry for significantlyfewer days before deserting their mate than did males fromcontrol pairs with natural-sized broods (20.5 ± 7.5 vs. 14.2 ± 6.2 days). In at least 20% of cases (n = 9/45),the deserting male immediately mated with another female. Maleswith experimentally reduced broods also spent less time guardingfry before deserting and attacked fewer brood predators thandid males with control broods. For broods manipulated to have100 fry, there was a significant negative relationship betweenthe days until male desertion and the proportion of the initialbrood removed. This indicates that male assessment of the futuresuccess of the current brood (hence its reproductive value)is based on past mortality and/or that there is variation amongmales in the expected size of future broods. Both current broodsize and brood size relative to initial brood size are thereforepredictors of male, but not female, parental behavior and matedesertion. Female care may be unaffected by brood reductiondue to limited breeding opportunities and partial compensationfor reduced male care.  相似文献

Selective feeding on large algae by copepods involves remotedetection of individual particles and subsequent active captureresponses In this study we use radiotracer experiments to quantifythe clearance rates of five coexisting freshwater copepods andto investigate the relative merits of the chemoreception andmechanoreception hypotheses of remote detection Tropocyclopsand three diaptomid copepods exhibited relatively high clearancerates when feeding on low concentrations of large algae, suggestingthat most previous studies with freshwater copepods have underestimatedmaximal clearance rates and the degree of size selectivity.All five species of copepods exihibited strong selection foran intermediate-sized flagellate (25 µm Cartena) or alarge-sized nonmotile alga (80 µ.m Pediastrum) over asmall-sized flagellate (6 µ.m Chlamydomonas). The weight-specificclearance rate for Tropocylops prasmus feeding on motile Cartena(271 ml mg1 h1) was about twice that of threediaptomid copepods and more than an order-of-magnitude higherthan the estimate for Epischura lacustris feeding on its preferredalga, Pediastrum Assuming that distance chemoreception (‘smell’)is important in remote detection, we predicted that the additionof high concentrations of ‘algal odors’ would obscureany chemical gradients emanating from individual algal cellsand would thereby hinder the remote detection and active captureof large algae Contrary to this hypothesis, the addition ofamino acids, sucrose, and algal extracts had no effect on theclearance rates and selectivity of Diaptomus birgei. These results,together with recent cinematographic studies (Vanderploeg etal.,1990), suggest that mechanoreception is the primary mechanismfor the remote detection of large particles by diaptomid copepods.A raptorial cyclopoid, Tropocyclops prasinus, exhibited strongpreferences for motile algae, whereas a suspension-feeding calanoid,D birgei, did not select between motile and nonmotile cells.Motility appears to be an important factor in algal detectionfor small cyclopoid copepods but not for suspension-feedingdiaptomids  相似文献

Bolinopsis vitrea is a warm water lobate ctenophore which doesnot overlap in its distribution with Mnemiopsis mccradyi incontiguous waters. We examined its feeding ecology on a seriesof cruises. B. virrea ingested increasingly more prey at higherfood concentrations (2–100 prey l–1) but feedingeffort (clearance rate) decreased with increasing food availability.On a dry weight basis, smaller tentaculate Bolinopsis ingestedseveral times more than larger lobates, but based on carbonweight, specific ingestion was fairly uniform over the entiresize range investigated (6–60 mm total length). Bolinopsiscollected during the daytime in the Bahamas rarely had morethan three prey items in their guts. These results and laboratorymeasurements of digestion times (av. = 1.9 h) allowed computationof daily rations, which could not account for the metabolicrequirement as measured on the same cruises. Results of feedingexperiments, however, implied that prey densities in excessof 11–1 were sufficient to sustain a growing populationof Bolinopsis. Prey concentrations about an order of magnitudehigher were required for M. mccradyi based on similar experiments.These results were in general agreement with observed densitiesand distributions of ctenophores and their zooplankton preyin the Bahamas and coastal South Florida.  相似文献

Comparative studies have established the necessity for biparental care as an important factor for monogamy in freshwater fish and birds. However, whether two parents are really needed for offspring care remains an open question in many cases. I experimentally studied female and male contributions to offspring care in the white-browed coucal (Centropus superciliosus), a monogamous and biparental cuckoo with a balanced adult sex ratio, and contrasted it with the sympatric black coucal (C. grillii), a classically polyandrous species with a male-biased adult sex ratio and male-only care. To study the necessity for biparental care, I temporarily removed one partner for 2 days to see whether the remaining parent compensated for the absence of its partner. Both female and male white-browed coucals approximately doubled their feeding rates when their partner was absent, thus fully compensating the number of feeding visits to the nest. However, nestlings maintained their growth only, when males were present and females were removed. When males were removed and only females were present, nestling growth declined. Hence, only male white-browed coucals fully compensated for the temporary loss of the partner, suggesting that females could benefit most from nesting with additional males—if these should become available. Removing female black coucals had no consequence for nestling feeding rates of male black coucals. But male black coucals had to be returned to their territories within a few hours to avoid harming the brood because female black coucals typically would not commence feeding their offspring. In conclusion, the breeding system of white-browed coucals seems quite flexible and the relatively balanced adult sex ratio may stabilize monogamy in this species. Should ecological factors ever favour a stronger bias in the adult sex ratio towards males, female white-browed coucals may easily become polyandrous and relinquish parental care entirely to males.  相似文献

Adverse weather conditions during parental care may have direct consequences for offspring production, but longer‐term effects on juvenile and parental survival are less well known. We used long‐term data on reproductive output, recruitment, and parental survival in northern wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) to investigate the effects of rainfall during parental care on fledging success, recruitment success (juvenile survival), and parental survival, and how these effects related to nestling age, breeding time, habitat quality, and parental nest visitation rates. While accounting for effects of temperature, fledging success was negatively related to rainfall (days > 10 mm) in the second half of the nestling period, with the magnitude of this effect being greater for breeding attempts early in the season. Recruitment success was, however, more sensitive to the number of rain days in the first half of the nestling period. Rainfall effects on parental survival differed between the sexes; males were more sensitive to rain during the nestling period than females. We demonstrate a probable mechanism driving the rainfall effects on reproductive output: Parental nest visitation rates decline with increasing amounts of daily rainfall, with this effect becoming stronger after consecutive rain days. Our study shows that rain during the nestling stage not only relates to fledging success but also has longer‐term effects on recruitment and subsequent parental survival. Thus, if we want to understand or predict population responses to future climate change, we need to consider the potential impacts of changing rainfall patterns in addition to temperature, and how these will affect target species' vital rates.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Ascomorpha ovalis feeds on large dinoflagellates(e.g. Ceratium sp., Peridinium sp.) and is able to extract theircell contents by means of its virgate mastax. This paper presentsthe results of experiments on the feeding behaviour of laboratory-culturedAscomorpha with Cerarium furcoides as food algae. Ascomorphaare three times larger than their prey Ceratium (by volume),but with regard to total length, their prey was even 20% larger.Ascomorpha showed a hyperbolic functional response curve witha plateau of the feeding rate at 8 Ceratium cells animal–1dar–1 when concentrations of Ceratium were >100 cellsml–1. The mean handling time (time for capturing and extractingone Ceratium cell) was 3 min. The shape of the functional responsewas better described by a curvilinear model than by a rectilinearmodel. However, handling times cannot be responsible for this,since they were too short to set limits on ingestion rates.At low food concentrations, encounter rates with prey seemedto limit the feeding rates of Ascomorpha, whereas at mediumto high food concentrations, Satiation effects (lower attackrates) seemed to set limits on the feeding rates. Ascomorphashowed a significant decrease in the exploitation of singleCeratium cells at high prey concentrations. This decrease couldbe explained by a saturation effect in which the partly filledguts of Ascomorpha did not permit the total extraction of thecontents of a Ceratium cell.  相似文献

Obligate avian brood parasitism typically involves one of 2strategies: parasite chicks are either 1) virulent and evictall other eggs and nest mates to be raised alone or 2) moretolerant and share foster parental care with host chicks forsome or the entirety of the nestling period. We studied theconsequences of experimentally forced mixed broods of age-matchedone common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) and 2 great reed warbler(Acrocephalus arundinaceus) chicks. In these broods, both cuckooand host chicks grew slower than did either individual cuckoosor great reed warblers in broods of 1 parasite or 3 host chicks,respectively. Video records showed that in mixed broods, cuckoochicks received feedings less frequently than the 33% predictedby chance at 4 days of age but parental food allocations increasedto chance levels at 8 days of age. The consistent patterns oflower growth rates arose even though chicks in broods of 1 parasiteand 2 hosts received the largest prey items per feeding. Inaddition, several other measures of parental provisioning alsodid not predict species and brood-specific differences in nestlinggrowth rates across the different treatments. However, variationin begging displays and its specific costs on host and parasitechicks in the different nest treatments were not quantifiedin this study. We conclude that young of nest mate–evictorcommon cuckoos benefit from the sole occupancy of host nestsin part owing to an initial competitive disadvantage for parentalcare in broods with age-matched great reed warbler chicks.  相似文献

We examined basic breeding biology, as well as the effects of parental sex, brood size, nestling age, and nest habitat on foraging distances and parental food delivery rates of snow buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) on Devon Island, NT, Canada, in the summers of 2003–2006. Clutch sizes and initiation dates were similar to those found in previous studies, although nest density was much higher. Feeding rates and foraging distances of buntings differed depending on the size and age of the brood, but were similar between nest habitats. Unlike in earlier studies, we found that male buntings made fewer feeding visits, but traveled longer distances to forage for food than females. Whether these differences between the sexes relate to reducing competition for prey, or to differing sex roles in parental care due to the poorly insulated nest cavities of this species, remains to be determined.  相似文献

Cladoceran in situ feeding rates on natural bacteria labelledwith [methyl-3H] were studied in parallel with feeding ratedeterminations on 14C-labelled Chlorella in a hypertrophic subtropicalreservoir (Lake Hartbeespoort) through spring and summer (1986/87).Community filtration rates (CFR5) on bacteria and algae weresimilar, but selection for Chlorella (relative to natural bacteria)increased from midsummer in association with declining bacterialdensity and increasing dominance of ‘inedible’ componentsof the natural phytoplankton. Species-specific filtration rates(SSFRs) were determined for Daphnia pulexllongispina, Ceriodaphniareticulata, Diaphanosoma excisum, Bosmina longirostris and Moinamicrura during their respective seasonal occurrence in the studyperiod. SSFRs on algae and bacteria increased with body length(L, mm) in all species apart from Bosmina. Species-specificdifferences in absolute feeding rate (FR, ml animal–1day–1), the slope of the FR-L relationship and bacteriaselectivity were evident. Sex allocation theory predicts that parents should adjust investment in sons and daughters according to relative fitness of differently sexed offspring. In species with female preference for highly ornamented males, one advantage potentially accruing to parents from investing more in sons of the most ornamented males is that male offspring will inherit characters ensuring sexual attractiveness or high-quality genes, if ornaments honestly reveal male genetic quality. Furthermore, in species where extra-pair fertilizations occur, offspring sired by an extra-pair male are expected to more frequently be male than those of the legitimate male if the latter is of lower quality than the extra-pair male. We investigated adjustment of sex ratio of offspring in relation to ornamentation of the extra-pair and the social mate of females by direct manipulation of tails of male barn swallows Hirundo rustica . Molecular sexing of the offspring was performed using the W chromosome-linked avian chromo-helicase-DNA-binding protein (CHD) gene while paternity assessment was conducted by typing of hypervariable microsatellite loci. Extra-pair offspring sex ratio was not affected by ornamentation of their biological fathers relative to the experimental ornamentation of the parental male. Experimental ornamentation of the parental males did not affect the sex ratio of nestlings in their broods. Female barn swallows might be unable to bias offspring sex ratio at hatching according to the quality of the biological father. Alternatively, fitness benefits in terms of sexual attractiveness of sons might be balanced by the cost of compensating for little parental care provided by highly ornamented parental males, if sons are more costly to rear than daughters, or the advantage of producing more daughters, if males with large ornaments contribute differentially more to the viability of daughters than sons.  相似文献

Giemsa C-banding and genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) wereused to identify parental genomes in hybrids of Clivia(Amaryllidaceae).Of the three groups reputed to be hybrids, onlyC. cyrtanthiflorawas shown to be of hybrid origin. The ‘German hybrids’and ‘Belgian hybrids’ were both shown to be karyotypicallyand genomically similar to C. miniata, and are either selectionsor intraspecific hybrids of that species. Successful genomedifferentiation in F1hybrids by GISH required high stringencyand high ratios of blocking DNA to probe. The spatial dispositionof different genomes with C-band or GISH markers in the hybridswas investigated in two dimensions on the spread. In five artificiallyproduced hybrids, either C-banding or GISH was used to locatethe position of parental genomes in mitotic metaphase cells.In all cases there was a significant tendency for centromeresof the different parental genomes to occupy two distinct concentricdomains on the metaphase plate. The presence or absence of centromericheterochromatin was not correlated with genome disposition.Results show that chromosome analyses can be a useful way ofidentifying Clivia hybrids in their vegetative phase. The effect of starvation on the feeding rate of larval Chaoborus(Diptera. Chaoboridae) was investigated using Daphnia roseaas prey. The starvation period varied from 12 h to 22 days.The starved Chaoborus were individually incubated with 10 Daphniaunder controlled light and temperature conditions. Observationswere made on prey mortality every 2 h for the first 12 h andonce after 24 h. Feeding rates gradually increased to a maximumbetween 7–11 days of starvation. After this period, feedingrates declined to previous low levels. Generally, feeding rateswere significantly higher during the first 2–4 h of feeding.Thereafter, feeding rates were lower and exhibited no consistentpattems with length of feeding time.  相似文献

Male investment of time and energy in caring for offspring varies substantially both between and within bird species. Explaining this variation is of long-standing interest to ornithologists. One factor that may affect male care is breeding site altitude, through its effects on climate. The harsher, less predictable abiotic conditions at higher altitudes are hypothesized to favour increased male investment of time and energy in offspring care. We tested this hypothesis by comparing male parental behaviour in Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) nesting at 1500 and 2500 m a.s.l. in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, USA. We compared rates of prey delivery to nestlings at these two altitudes at two times: 1–2 days after hatching, when females spend much of their time brooding young, and 12–13 days later, when brooding has ended and nestling energy demands are peaking. High-altitude males fed nestlings 18 and 28% more often than low-altitude males early and later in the nestling stage, respectively, but only the difference in late-stage feeding rates were significant. Like males, females at the high site also fed nestlings significantly more often than females at the low site later in the nestling stage (45% difference in feeding rates). Consequently, the proportion of all feeding trips made by males at the high site (40%) did not differ significantly from that at the low site (44%). Parents at the high altitude may feed nestlings more often to compensate for their greater thermoregulatory costs. Parents may also be attempting to assist nestlings in storing fat and/or attaining a large size and effective homeothermy as quickly as possible to enhance nestling ability to survive bouts of severe weather which are common at high altitudes.  相似文献

Limnocalanus macrurus, a large, glacial-relict copepod, hasbeen assumed an omnivore or a herbivore; predaceous habits ofthe species are unknown. The predaceous feeding habits of Limnocalanusfrom Lake Michigan were studied in the laboratory using naturalprey. Predation rates were highest on copepod nauplii. Copepoditesof Diaptomus spp. and Cyclops spp. were preyed upon at lowerrates. Limnocalanus preyed selectively upon nauplii <300µm. Small cyclopoid copepodites (<–750 µm)were also selected over large copepodites. Experiments usingtwo prey types showed that nauplii were selected over all copepodites,and that no selectivity existed for either diaptomid or cyclopoidcopepodites. Predaceous feeding habits began in the fourth copepoditestage of Limnocalanus. Predaceous feeding rates of Limnocalanuschanged seasonally being highest in late spring and autumn andlowest in summer and early winter. Since Limnocalanus also feedson net-phytoplankton, predation rate changes may be relatedto changes in the relative abundance of large phytoplanktonand naupliar prey in nature. We manipulated brood sizes of eastern kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus)to measure the costs and benefits of parental care and to testwhether kingbirds showed evidence of individual optimizationof reproductive effort. We found that the number of feedingtrips (trips/h) increased and that per capita feeding rates(trips/nestling/h) declined as brood size increased. The declinein per capita feeding rates was mostly due to high feeding rateto broods of one: parents made roughly equal number of tripsto feed each nestling in broods of two to five. Nonetheless,nestling mass declined with brood size, probably because largebroods were fed more small prey. Nestling condition (mass adjustedfor structural size) differed only between broods of one andfive. After controlling for effects of brood size, feeding rateshad no supplementary influence on either nestling size or condition,but productivity and feeding rate were positively and significantlyrelated. Adult male condition did not vary with brood size,manipulated brood size, or total feeding rate, but declinedas the pair's per capita feeding rates increased. In addition,males that returned to breed were in better condition beforeleaving for migration than those that failed to return. Femalecondition tended to decline, and the probability of returningto breed dropped when broods were enlarged. However, femalecondition was independent of the probability of returning. Ourresults show that high feeding rates were costly, but that theycarried benefits (greater productivity). Some evidence for individualoptimization of reproductive effort existed: variability innestling and adult female condition were better explained bychanges in brood size than by the actual number of young inthe nest. Amount of risk taking during parental care is often explainedin relation to the reproductive value of the offspring. The"harm-to-offspring hypothesis" focuses on the relative harma period of no parental care can do to the offspring. Accordingto this hypothesis, parents should take greater risks for offspringin poor condition than for offspring in good condition. We manipulatedoffspring condition in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)and tested the harm-to-offspring hypothesis by exposing parentsto a predator model (a sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus). Time elapseduntil a parent first entered the nest-box was used as a risk-takingmeasure. Parents spent significantly shorter time until first nestvisit for offspring in poor condition than for offspring ingood condition. Hence, the harm-to-offspring hypothesis wassupported.  相似文献

Theory predicts that traits which signal parental quality might evolve in males of species with biparental care. In avian species, male ornaments may be the most likely candidates for such signals. Male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) possess a black throat patch often referred to as a “badge” or a “badge of status”. By assuming a trade-off between male attractiveness (reflected in male ornaments) and parental care under the differential allocation hypothesis, we predicted that badge size would be negatively correlated with male parental investment. An experiment in which the badge was enlarged in one group and unchanged in a control group was conducted. Our manipulation was predicted to affect female as well as male parental investment. However, we found that eight variables associated with parental investment—the start date for breeding, clutch size, male and female incubation time, male and female food provisioning rate, and average chick weight and the number of fledglings—barely differed between treatments. Also, little evidence for correlations between natural variation in badge size and any of these eight variables was found. Instead, the start date for breeding and the number of fledglings were significantly correlated with both male and female age, while clutch size increased with female age. Female condition was a positive predictor of clutch size and number of fledglings. Female tarsus length, unexpectedly, is related to both male and female incubation time. Badge size was also positively correlated with male age. However, parental age (male or female) was not related to parental care. We conclude that badge size does not signal parental quality, but that the ages of both sexes and the condition of the female play significant roles in the reproductive performance of this species.  相似文献
