Butterfly Host Plant Choice in the Face of Possible Confusion   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
We tested predictions from the theory that ovipositing females of phytophagous insects are limited by their neural capacity for information processing. Previous studies have found that relatively specialized insects make faster and/or more accurate identifications of host plants compared to generalists. The study species was the polyphagous comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album (Nymphalidae). We compared females originating from two populations (Sweden and England) which differ in degree of specialization on the preferred host Urtica dioica (Urticaceae). Females were given a choice between this plant and a very similar nonhost, white dead nettle, Laminum album (Lamiacease), or a choice between a relatively poor host, Betuala pubescens, and the nonhost Betula pendula (Betulaceae). Oviposition rate was lower in cages with Betula compared to cages with Urtica, demonstrating that P. c-album females will withhold eggs when preferred hosts are not available. As predicted, females originating from the Swedish generalist population oviposited more often on the nonhost Lamium. However, females of both populations discriminated very strongly against oviposition on B. pendula. We found that newly hatched larvae have some ability to move from herbaceous nonhost to hosts. Although alternative interpretations are possible, the results give further support to the hypothesis that there are trade-offs between diet breadth and the ability to discriminate among plants.  相似文献

In most phytophagous insects, the larval diet strongly affects future fitness and in species that do not feed on plant parts as adults, larval diet is the main source of nitrogen. In many of these insect-host plant systems, the immature larvae are considered to be fully dependent on the choice of the mothers, who, in turn, possess a highly developed host recognition system. This circumstance allows for a potential mother-offspring conflict, resulting in the female maximizing her fecundity at the expense of larval performance on suboptimal hosts. In two experiments, we aimed to investigate this relationship in the polyphagous comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album, by comparing the relative acceptance of low- and medium-ranked hosts between females and neonate larvae both within individuals between life stages, and between mothers and their offspring. The study shows a variation between females in oviposition acceptance of low-ranked hosts, and that the degree of acceptance in the mothers correlates with the probability of acceptance of the same host in the larvae. We also found a negative relationship between stages within individuals as there was a higher acceptance of lower ranked hosts in females who had abandoned said host as a larva. Notably, however, neonate larvae of the comma butterfly did not unconditionally accept to feed from the least favorable host species even when it was the only food source. Our results suggest the possibility that the disadvantages associated with a generalist oviposition strategy can be decreased by larval participation in host plant choice.  相似文献

The ovipositional patterns of the heteronomous hyperparasitoid Encarsia pergandiella Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in the presence of its primary host Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), and in the presence or absence of conspecific and heterospecific secondary hosts (Encarsia formosa Gahan andEretmocerus mundus Mercet; Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) were examined to assess host species preferences. Host preferences by heteronomous hyperparasitoids may affect the relative abundance of co-occurring parasitoid species and may influence host population suppression by the parasitoid community. Four combinations of hosts were tested: (1) B. argentifolii, E. mundus, and E. formosa, (2) B. argentifolii, E. formosa, and E. pergandiella, (3) B. argentifolii, E. mundus, and E. pergandiella, and, (4) B. argentifolii, E. mundus, E. formosa, and E. pergandiella. Arrays of hosts (24) were constructed in Petri dishes using leaf disks, each bearing one host. Thirty arrays of each host combination were exposed to single females for 6 h. All hosts were dissected to determine number of eggs per host. Encarsia pergandiella parasitized E. formosa hosts as frequently as E. mundus hosts. However, E. pergandiella parasitized either of these heterospecific hosts more frequently than conspecific hosts in treatments including two secondary host species. When a third parasitoid species was included in host arrays, E. pergandiella parasitized conspecific hosts as frequently as heterospecific hosts. Developmental stage of the hosts did not significantly influence host species selection by E. pergandiella. Our results indicate that host selection and oviposition by heteronomous hyperparasitoids like E. pergandiella, vary with the composition of hosts available for parasitization, and suggest a preference for heterospecific over conspecific secondary hosts.  相似文献

Castilleja tenuiflora is a facultative root hemiparasitic plant that has colonized a disturbed lava field in central Mexico. To determine the effects of hemiparasitism on the population dynamics of the parasite, we identified a set of potential hosts and quantified their effects on the vital rates of C. tenuiflora during 2016–2018. Connections between the roots of the hemiparasite and the hosts were confirmed with a scanning electron microscope. Annual matrices considering two conditions (with and without potential hosts) were built based on vital rates for each year, and annual stochastic finite rate growth rates (λs) were calculated. Plants produced more reproductive structures with hosts than without hosts. A Life Table Response Experiment (LTRE) was performed to compare the contributions of vital rates between conditions. We identified 19 species of potential hosts for this generalist hemiparasite. Stochastic lambda with hosts λs = 1.02 (CI = 0.9999, 1.1) tended to be higher than without them λs = 0.9503 (CI = 0.9055, 0.9981). The highest elasticity values correspond to survival. LTRE indicated that the most important parameters are survival and fecundity; the total contribution of fecundity (0.0192) to the difference in growth was three times lower than that of survival (0.0603). Piqueria trinervia was the most abundant host, and C. tenuiflora had a higher lambda with it than with other species. Individuals can grow alone, but hosts can have a positive effect on the vital parameters of C. tenuiflora and on λ.  相似文献

Abstract

Viscum album L. ssp. album is semi-parasitic on deciduous trees and shrubs. In order to identify hosts and map the distribution of V. album ssp. album in Croatia and Slovenia, field research was carried out, and herbaria were surveyed. In Croatia and Slovenia, V. album ssp. album occurred on 59 taxa. In Croatia, there were 52 hosts (33 autochthonous and 15 allochthonous species, two cultivars and two hybrids). In Slovenia, there were 25 hosts (21 autochthonous and four allochthonous species). There were 18 hosts common to both countries, 34 hosts were found only in Croatia, and seven hosts only in Slovenia. The hosts belonged to 13 families. The majority of these (19 species) belong to the Rosaceae, followed by Salicaceae, Aceraceae, Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Tiliaceae, Hippocastanaceae, Ulmaceae, Oleaceae, Fabaceae, Moraceae and Viscaceae. All hosts have been previously recorded in the literature, except Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud., Amelanchier lamarckii F.G. Schroed. and Crataegus nigra Waldst. et Kit. The distribution of this mistletoe was scattered, due to the scattered distribution of hosts, local conditions, movement of bird-vectors, etc. A continuous distribution was found only in part of the distribution area of narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl).  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the impact of sting frequency on progeny production of Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary, koinobiont endoparasitoid of noctuid pests. In replicated trials, young, mated, host-deprived C. marginiventris females were exposed to three Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) early instar larvae, one at a time, in Petri dish arenas, and observed as they stung these hosts once, twice, or thrice. The average amount of time that elapsed between stinging a host ranged from a minimum of 3 min, when females were exposed to unstung hosts, to a maximum of 8–11 min when females were exposed to previously stung hosts. Sting frequency had no effect on the yield of C. marginiventris progeny; approximately 90% of hosts, in all treatment groups, yielded a parasitoid mature larva, which spun a cocoon. No hosts yielded more than one parasitoid. The percentage of adult female progeny tended to increase with sting frequency; hosts that were stung thrice yielded 60% female C. marginiventris adults. The production of female progeny may depend on the egg allocation pattern of C. marginiventris females as well as the competitive interactions between siblings developing inside a shared host. This study suggests that S. exigua larvae can sustain 2–3 stings without diminishing their ability to yield a C. marginiventris mature larva. Provisioning enclosures with enough hosts to exceed the daily (per capita) oviposition rate of C. marginiventris females might limit the repeated stinging of the same hosts.  相似文献

On granite outcrops around Highlands, North Carolina four sympatric Danthonia grass species are infected by the fungus Atkinsonella hypoxylon (Clavicipitaceae). Danthonia epilis and D. sericea (rare hosts) are infected only in this small region, although they range more widely, while D. compressa and D. spicata (widespread hosts) are infected throughout their ranges in eastern North America. To test the hypothesis that infection of the rare hosts has recently spread from the widespread hosts, the genetic structure of fungal populations on different Danthonia hosts was investigated by isozyme electrophoresis. Two hundred isolates were collected from 46 sites and analyzed for ten polymorphic isozyme loci to examine levels of variation, genetic differentiation, and gene flow among fungal populations infecting different hosts. Genetic identities (I) indicated that isolates from within each of the widespread and rare host species pairs were homogeneous (I > 0.99), but the pairs were highly differentiated (0.66 < I < 0.69). With one exception there was no overlap in fungal genotypes isolated from the widespread hosts (12 genotypes) vs. the rare hosts (seven genotypes). Two plants of D. compressa growing sympatrically with infected D. epilis at one site were infected with a genotype characteristic of the latter species. Estimates of gene flow suggest a high degree of host-mediated reproductive isolation in A. hypoxylon, indicating that the fungus forms distinct, long-standing host races or sibling species in the southern Appalachians.  相似文献

Abstract Fitness and efficacy of Encarsia sophia (Girault & Dodd) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) as a biological control agent was compared on two species of whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) hosts, the relatively smaller sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype ‘B’, and the larger greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood). Significant differences were observed on green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the laboratory at 27 ± 2°C, 55%± 5% RH, and a photoperiod of 14: 10 h (L: D). Adult parasitoids emerging from T. vaporariorum were larger than those emerging from B. tabaci, and almost all biological parameters of E. sophia parasitizing the larger host species were superior except for the developmental times of the parasitoids that were similar when parasitizing the two host species. Furthermore, parasitoids emerging from T. vaporariorum parasitized more of these hosts than did parasitoids emerging from B. tabaci. We conclude that E. sophia reared from larger hosts had better fitness than from smaller hosts. Those from either host also preferred the larger host for oviposition but were just as effective on smaller hosts. Therefore, larger hosts tended to produce better parasitoids than smaller hosts.  相似文献

The development of the pupal parasitoidBrachymeria ovata (Say) was studied in 3 lepidopterous hosts reared on artificial diet and insect-susceptible and insectresistant soybena genotypes.Pseudoplusia includens (Walker),Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubner andHeliothis zea (Boddie) pupae from larvae reared on soybean leaves were less suitable forB. ovata development than pupae from larvae reared on artificial diet.B. ovata emergence rates, size and sometimes development period were adversely affected on plant-reared hosts. Dissection of hosts 6 days after parasitisation byB. ovata showed a higher proportion of diet-reared host pupae contained large parasitoid larvae than plant-reared hosts. Ovipositional choice tests by Microplitis rufiventris females (Hym., Braconidae) between granulosis virus‐infected (GVI) and non‐infected (NI) Spodoptera littoralis larvae (Lep., Noctuidae), were assessed using discriminatory methods for re‐isolating the NI and virus‐infected hosts after removing the female parasitoid. When M. rufiventris females were given a choice between NI and GVI S. littoralis hosts, the adult females exhibited marked preference (P < 0.01) for the NI (i.e. higher quality) hosts. In this case, M. rufiventris females and S. littoralis GV (SlGV) did not significantly compete for the same type of host larvae and are, generally, compatible. However, when the choice was given between two low qualities of S. littoralis hosts, i.e. virus‐free previously parasitized hosts and viral‐infected hosts a significant preference (P < 0.01) of the parasitoid females for the GVI larvae was observed. In this case, the parasitoid would be at a disadvantage when competing with GV for the same host. However, the parasitoid could be used as an additional tool for the dissemination of biocontrol viruses within different pest populations, i.e. hosts other than S. littoralis. Importantly, the results showed different strategies of parasitoid female in egg‐laying management. When M. rufiventris female was given a choice between healthy and SlGVI hosts, the female deposited more eggs than when she was given a choice between two low qualities of host larvae. The results of the study may have implications in pest management strategies using M. rufiventris and SlGV against S. littoralis larvae.  相似文献

Parasitism, offspring sex ratio and superparasitism of the facultative autoparasitoid Encarsia tricolor Foërster (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) when given access to arenae with different proportions of the primary host (Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood)) and two species of secondary hosts (E. tricolor and Encarsia formosa Gahan) were studied.Parasitism and offspring sex ratio were not affected by female age in the range 3–10 days old. When the secondary hosts were young E. tricolor pupae, eggs were mostly laid on primary hosts, so the offspring sex ratio was more female-biased than expected, and secondary hosts were not superparasitized at all. When the secondary hosts were fully grown E. formosa larvae, superparasitism was small and offspring sex ratio was more male-biased than expected. E. tricolor females were able to discriminate between hosts previously parasitized by themselves and non-parasitized hosts.  相似文献

Interspecific competition amongst parasitoids is important in shaping the evolution of life‐history strategies in these insects as well as community structure. Competition for hosts may occur between adult female parasitoids (‘extrinsic’ competition) or their progeny (‘intrinsic’ competition). Here, we examined intrinsic competition between two solitary secondary hyperparasitoids, Lysibia nana and Gelis agilis in cocoons of a primary parasitoid, Cotesia glomerata. Each species was allowed to sting hosts previously parasitized by the other at 24 h time intervals over the course of 144 h (6 days). When hosts were attacked simultaneously, neither species was dominant although the species to attack first won most encounters when it had a 24–48 h head start. However, after this time there was dramatic shift in the outcome with G. agilis dominating in all hosts > 72‐h old, regardless of which species had parasitized C. glomerata first. G. agilis larvae, which initially had competed with L. nana for control of C. glomerata resources, began attacking the larvae of L. nana, whereas L. nana rejected hosts with older G. agilis larvae or pupae. Effects of multiparasitism also affected the development time and adult mass of the winning parasitoid. Our results reveal a shift in the trophic status of G. agilis from C. glomerata (in younger hosts) to L. nana (in older hosts), the first time such a phenomenon has been reported in parasitoids.  相似文献

Many parasitoids discriminate previously parasitised hosts from unparasitised ones to avoid mortality of offspring. Parasitoids that parasitise aggressive hosts such as lepidopteran larvae are known to attack hosts very quickly to avoid being attacked. However, little is known about host discrimination of such quick attacking parasitoids. We investigated host discrimination of Microplitis demolitor (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) a quick attacking parasitoid of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Results showed that ratios of female wasps that rejected the hosts after antennal examination did not differ between parasitised and unparasitised hosts, indicating that M. demolitor did not discriminate hosts by antennal examination. However, 95% of females that inserted ovipositor into unparasitised hosts actually laid eggs, whereas it was only 31% for parasitised hosts, indicating that females discriminated hosts by oviposition insertion. Analyzing video recordings revealed that the ovipositor exploration of the host took 0.3 s. Female wasps that had experienced high-host density of unparasitised hosts readily rejected parasitised hosts, while wasps with experience of low host availability of parasitised hosts tended to accept parasitised hosts. This suggests that host discrimination behaviour of M. demolitor is affected by previous experience of different host availability and host quality.

The following mistletoes and their hosts were studied: Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. (P. flavescens [Pursh] Nutt. var. macrophyllum Engelm.) on Juglans hindsii Jeps. (California black walnut), Arceuthobium campylopodum Engelmn. f. abietinum (Engelm.) Gill on Abies concolor (Gord. and Glend.) Lindl. (white fir) and A. magnifica A. Murr (red fir), Arceuthobium campylopodum Engelm. f. campylopodum (Engelm.) Gill on Pinus sabiniana Dougl. (Digger pine), and Amyema pendula (Spleng) Tiegh. on Eucalyptus macrorhyncha F. Muell. ex Benth. (stringybark). With the exception of the Amyema leaves, the mistletoes are richer in free and bound amino acids than their hosts; moreover, their amino acid composition closely resembles that of their hosts. Nevertheless, there is no satisfactory evidence that mistletoe specificity depends on the amino acid composition of the hosts. Some mistletoes contain γ-aminobutyric acid and asparagine, not found in all hosts. All the above mistletoes but no hosts contain free hydroxyproline. These results are discussed in relation to (1) the region in the mistletoes where hydroxyproline is formed and (2) the possibility of using certain amino acid analogs as selective poisons for mistletoes.  相似文献

  • 1 Second instar Filippia gemina de Lotto scale insects are the preferred hosts of female Coccophugus atrutus Compere larvae. These scale insects were found on their host plants, Chrysanthemoides monilifera Norlindh and Cliffortia strobilifera Mettenius, only at certain times during a 1 year sampling programme.
  • 2 Late larval instars and prepupae of C.atratus, and a Metaphycus species, are the preferred hosts of male C.atratus larvae. These hosts, although they occurred on the same host plants as hosts for female C.atratus, were most numerous at different times during the sampling period.
  • 3 The ratio of hosts suitable for C.atratus varied from a predominance of hosts suitable for females through to a predominance of hosts suitable for males. Sex ratios of adult C.atratus followed a similar trend but did not reflect, exactly, the ratio of available hosts. Differences in mortality between sexes and hyperparasitism may account for this anomaly.
  • 4 Variable population sex ratios observed in C.atratus apparently result from the behaviour of individual females in which brood sex ratios are dependent on the relative availability of hosts for males and hosts for females. This behaviour, in turn, may result from variability in the host population structure but may also result from selection pressures operating at the time that heteronomous hyperparasitism evolved.

The amino acid compositions of the root xylem saps of Olax phyllanthi and a range of its common hosts were examined in native coastal heath in Western Australia and in pot cultures of Olax reliant on single hosts. When hosts specializing in the xylem transport of one major solute (asparagine, glutamine, histidine, arginine or proline) were exploited, the endophytic tissue of haustoria and the xylem sap of Olax showed much lower proportions of this than of other solutes, suggesting pronounced metabolic transformation prior to xylem loading by the parasite. However, the xylem sap of Olax did partly reflect the compositions of its hosts; for example, djenkolic acid and pipecolic acid were present when Olax was parasitic on species of Acacia, and levels of citrulline and aspartic acid were higher than normal when it exploited hosts transporting large amounts of these compounds. Back-flow of S-ethenyl cysteine, a novel amino acid specific to Olax, was observed to another root hemiparasite (Exocarpos sparteus) in native habitat and to certain non-parasitic hosts in water-stressed pot cultures. Haustoria exhibited high levels of glutamine synthetase but showed appreciable in vivo nitrate reductase activity only when on hosts with high xylem levels of nitrate.  相似文献

Overproduction of males in mass rearing of parasitic Hymenoptera contributes to higher costs for biological control because only females directly kill pests. We present a technique, based on manipulating host composition, to generate less male‐biased sex ratios in parasitoid species that adjust their sex allocation in response to relative host size. Our system consisted of chrysanthemum, Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev var. ‘Miramar’; a leafminer, Liriomyza langei Frick (Diptera: Agromyzidae); and a commercially available parasitoid, Diglyphus isaea (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). We compared the offspring sex ratios of D. isaea females presented with different compositions of L. langei larvae on chrysanthemum. Presenting individual females with only large hosts increased mean sex ratio from 32 to 67% male over 2 days. However, presenting individual females with progressively larger hosts over 1 or 2 days reduced mean sex ratio from 90 to 100% male to less than 30% male. Groups of females produced sex ratios around 58% male if presented with both plants infested by only small hosts and plants infested by only large hosts. In comparison, groups of females produced sex ratios around 48% male if presented with plants infested by both small hosts and large hosts. We compared the use of both small hosts and large hosts to only large hosts for simulated mass rearing of wasps over 8 weeks. Using both small hosts and large hosts produced similar numbers of wasps as using only large hosts, but reduced mean sex ratio of weekly cohorts from 66% male to 56% male. The two techniques produced females of similar size, but using both large hosts and small hosts produced slightly smaller males than using only large hosts. The use of both small hosts and large hosts for mass rearing of D. isaea could reduce actual costs of females by 23%.  相似文献

Synopsis Social structure and interactions between the anemonefishes, Amphiprion clarkii and A. perideraion, which utilize the same host sea anemone Radianthus kuekenthali, were investigated on a coral reef of Okinawa Islands, Japan. In an 87 × 373 m2 study area, 98 sea anemones were inhabited by both species (32.5%), by only A. clarkii (48.9%), or by only A. perideraion (18.6%). A group of A. clarkii often occupied two or more individual hosts, and group members often interchanged. However, a group of A. perideraion usually used only one host and migration between groups was rare. The larger A. clarkii suppressed reproduction of A. perideraion in cohabiting groups, while A. perideraion suppressed settlement of Juvenile A. clarkii to its own hosts. Juvenile A. clarkii settled on small hosts as well as on large hosts, whereas juvenile A. perideraion settled only on large hosts. Coexistence appears to be possible in part by differences in settlement patterns between juveniles of the two anemonefishes.  相似文献

Intraspecific host discrimination is widespread in solitary parasitoids whose adult females forage for and evaluate host suitability, whereas interspecific discrimination is less common. In some parasitoid species, mostly Diptera and Coleoptera, the larva performs the last step of host searching. It has been suggested that host discrimination will rarely occur in such host-seeking larvae because their low mobility results in a low host encounter rate. We determined the extent to which the larvae of Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), a solitary parasitoid of aggregated Diptera pupae: (1) discriminated between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by conspecifics; (2) used semiochemical cues to discriminate; (3) were influenced by life expectancy, presence of conspecifics and host availability in their host acceptance decision; and the extent to which (4) A. bilineata and A. bipustulata L., a species exploiting the same hosts and occurring sympatrically, showed interspecific host discrimination. A. bilineata larvae were able to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by conspecifics in a choice experiment. Such behavior has never previously been described for a coleopteran parasitoid or for a parasitoid species whose larvae perform host searching. Host discrimination in this species was not based on the presence of visual or tactile cues (e.g., entrance holes) but rather on chemical cues. The life expectancy of A. bilineata larvae was significantly shorter in the presence than in absence of hosts, and older larvae had lower parasitism success than young larvae in a 24-h experiment. However, the host acceptance decision of A. bilineata larvae was not influenced by larval age or the presence of conspecifics when the ratio of hosts per larva was greater than or equal to 1. When hosts were scarce, the degree of superparasitism increased significantly with the number of foraging conspecifics and the age of the larvae. Both species of Aleochara showed intra- and interspecific host discrimination in a choice experiment. In contrast to A. bipustulata, A. bilineata larvae more frequently parasitized hosts parasitized by A. bipustulata than those parasitized by conspecifics. We suggest that host discrimination will be frequent in solitary parasitoids with host-seeking larvae when hosts are aggregated. Received: 4 June 1998 / Accepted: 1 September 1998  相似文献
