This study examines nest building and mating in relation to size in male corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops, in the absence of male–male competition. We kept males of varying size together with mature females in tanks containing adequate materials and sites for nest construction. Our results indicate that the size of territorial males does not influence the ability to construct a nest. However, larger males initiated nest building earlier than smaller males and nest size correlated positively with male size. Furthermore, male size did not affect whether or not a nesting male succeeded in mating, indicating that male size was not essential for female acceptance (i.e. whether or not a female is willing to mate) of a male in the current situation.  相似文献

A probability proportional to size (PPS) method of sample selection, based on the transformed auxiliary information as the measure of size, has been suggested. It has been observed that the PPS estimator under the suggested method is always better than the simple random sampling with replacement (SRSWR) and the usual PPSWR estimator. The roles of herbivory and pollination success in plant reproduction have frequently been examined, but interactions between these two factors have gained much less attention. In three field experiments, we examined whether artificial defoliation affects allocation to attractiveness to pollinators, pollen production, female reproductive success and subsequent growth in Platanthera bifolia L. (Rich.). We also recorded the effects of inflorescence size on these variables. We studied the effects of defoliation on reproductive success of individual flowers in three sections of inflorescence. Defoliation and inflorescence size did not have any negative effects on the proportion of opened flowers, spur length, nectar production or the weight of pollinia. However, we found that hand-pollination increased relative seed production and defoliation decreased seed set in most cases. Interactions between hand-pollination and defoliation were non-significant indicating that defoliation did not affect female reproductive success indirectly via decreased pollinator attraction. Plants with a large inflorescence produced relatively more seeds than plants with a small inflorescence only after hand-pollination. The negative effect of defoliation on relative capsule production was most clearly seen in the upper sections of the inflorescence. In addition to within season effects of leaf removal, defoliated P. bifolia plants may also have decreased lifetime fitness as a result of lower seed set within a season and because of a lower number of reproductive events due to decreased plant size (leaf area) following defoliation. Our study thus shows that defoliation by herbivores may crucially affect reproductive success of P. bifolia.  相似文献

Objective: Eating frequently in restaurants is one of the behaviors associated with obesity. This study examined whether increasing the portion size of an entrée affected energy intake at a restaurant meal. Research Methods and Procedures: In a cafeteria‐style restaurant on different days, the size of a pasta entrée was varied from a standard portion (248 g) to a large portion (377 g). The entrée price was not changed. Intake of the entrée was determined by covertly weighing each dish before and after the meal; intake of all other foods was determined by estimating the percent consumed. The 180 adult customers who purchased the entrée also completed a survey in which they rated characteristics of the meal, including the appropriateness of the entrée portion size and the amount that they ate compared with their usual meal. Results: Portion size had a significant effect on intake of the entrée (p < 0.0001). Compared with customers who purchased the standard portion, those who purchased the larger portion increased their energy intake of the entrée by 43% (719 kJ; 172 kcal) and of the entire meal by 25% (664 kJ; 159 kcal). There was no difference between the two groups of customers in ratings of the appropriateness of the portion size or of the amount that was eaten in relation to their usual meal. Discussion: In a restaurant setting, increasing the size of an entrée results in increased energy intake. These results support the suggestion that large restaurant portions may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.  相似文献

An enclosure experiment was performed to test for direct predationeffects on fecundity and adult body size of the copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis in the field. By introducing a high densityof fish (15 underyearling roach, Rutilus rutilus, per 350litre enclosure) and documenting the short-term effects on traitsin a rapidly decreasing prey population, responses to changes inthe phytoplankton community were minimized. After 68 hours ofpredation, clutch size and frequency of females carrying eggs weresignificantly lower in fish enclosures. Female density was moreaffected than male density. Predation selected against large bodysize in both sexes but less so in females, leading to an increasedsexual size dimorphism. The results agree with predictions based onprey selectivity in fish. Predation risk should increase withclutch size and body size since these traits increase theconspicuousness of prey. The size of the highly visible egg-clutchmay be more important than body size. Female body size wasuncorrelated to clutch size, which may explain the weaker sizeeffect among females and the changed sexual sizedimorphism.  相似文献

Mapping and assessment of ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes as required by the EU biodiversity policy need a better characterization of the given landscape typology according to its ecological and cultural values. Such need should be accommodated by a better discrimination of the landscape characteristics linked to the capacity of providing ecosystem services and socio-cultural benefits. Often, these key variables depend on the degree of farmland heterogeneity and landscape patterns. We employed segmentation and landscape metrics (edge density and image texture respectively), derived from a pan-European multi-temporal and multi-spectral remote sensing dataset, to generate a consistent European indicator of farmland heterogeneity, the Farmland Heterogeneity Indicator (FHI). We mapped five degrees of FHI on a wall-to-wall basis (250 m spatial resolution) over European agricultural landscapes including natural grasslands. Image texture led to a clear improvement of the indicator compared to the pure application of Edge Density, in particular to a better detection of small patches. In addition to deriving a qualitative indicator we attributed an approximate patch size to each class, allowing an indicative assessment of European field sizes. Based on CORINE land cover, we identified pastures and heterogeneous land cover classes as classes with the highest degree of FHI, while agroforestry and olive groves appeared less heterogeneous on average. We performed a verification based on a continental and regional scale, which resulted in general good agreement with independently derived data.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a leading cause of young mortality in the red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, culture, and size disparity is its primary causative factor. Cannibalism did not occur in young fish, graded by a difference of 0.5cm from 2.0 to 4.5cm in total length. There was a shift in the size distribution from unimodal (normal) when there was no cannibalism, to bimodal or trimodal when cannibalism occurred. The results suggested that the wider was the size disparity, the greater was the sibling cannibalism. Size disparity increased with growth and in turn with sibling cannibalism, which became insignificant when the young grew to a size of about 6cm. We present threshold levels of size disparity among siblings to prevent mutual cannibalism. We hypothesize that through sibling cannibalism a hierarchy may evolve in a red drum cohort, at which a stable population will form.  相似文献

Food webs are strongly size‐structured so will be vulnerable to changes in environmental factors that affect large predators. However, mechanistic understanding of environmental controls of top predator size is poorly developed. We used streams to investigate how predator body size is altered by three fundamental climate change stressors: reductions in habitat size, increases in disturbance and warmer temperatures. Using new survey data from 74 streams, we showed that habitat size and disturbance were the most important stressors influencing predator body size. A synergistic interaction between that habitat size and disturbance due to flooding meant the sizes of predatory fishes peaked in large, benign habitats and their body size decreased as habitats became either smaller or harsher. These patterns were supported by experiments indicating that habitat‐size reductions and increased flood disturbance decreased both the abundance and biomass of large predators. This research indicates that interacting climate change stressors can influence predator body size, resulting in smaller predators than would be predicted from examining an environmental factor in isolation. Thus, climate‐induced changes to key interacting environmental factors are likely to have synergistic impacts on predator body size which, because of their influence on the strength of biological interactions, will have far‐reaching effects on food‐web responses to global environmental change.  相似文献

Cell division must be tightly coupled to cell growth in order to maintain cell size, yet the mechanisms linking these two processes are unclear. It is known that almost all proteins involved in cell division shuttle between cytoplasm and nucleus during the cell cycle; however, the implications of this process for cell cycle dynamics and its coupling to cell growth remains to be elucidated. We developed mathematical models of the cell cycle which incorporate protein translocation between cytoplasm and nucleus. We show that protein translocation between cytoplasm and nucleus not only modulates temporal cell cycle dynamics, but also provides a natural mechanism coupling cell division to cell growth. This coupling is mediated by the effect of cytoplasmic-to-nuclear size ratio on the activation threshold of critical cell cycle proteins, leading to the size-sensing checkpoint (sizer) and the size-independent clock (timer) observed in many cell cycle experiments.  相似文献

The response of female three-spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) to differences in food ration during the breeding season was quantified for several variables related to reproductive performance. The measured protein and lipid contents (mg g−1) of eggs were unaffected by ration. Egg size increased with an increase in both ration and female size, but the proportional increase in egg size was much smaller than the proportional increase in ration. The best predictor of mean batch (clutch) fecundity and weight was female size. There was a small but significant increase in batch fecundity with ration, but the increase was not directly proportional to the increase in ration. The rate of spawning, total breeding season fecundity and total weight of eggs spawned over the breeding season were sensitive to ration with breeding season fecundity and weight increasing in direct proportion to ration. Thus, in female sticklebacks, there is a hierarchy of sensitivity to ration in the response of variables related to reproduction.  相似文献

Chimeric morulae from five to nine embryos were produced by aggregation after removal of the zonae pellucidae and brief incubation in phytohemagglutinin-P. After 28 hr of in vitro culture, these aggregates were transferred to the left uterine horn of pseudopregnant recipient female mice. Each recipient also received control embryos in the right uterine horn. Genetic markers were included so that aggregate-derived offspring could be distinguished from control offspring. Aggregate-derived embryos survived to term, but at a much reduced rate. In the 25 recipients that produced litters, 6.2% (N=211) of the aggregated embryos developed into liveborn young. Survival-to-term for control embryos was 38.8% (N=387). Survival-to-term was independent of the number of embryos aggregated. The aggregate-derived embryos were apparently undergoing size regulation following implantation.  相似文献

Egg provisions represent the complete energy supply of oviparous organisms from fertilization until hatching, and egg size is generally correlated with initial offspring size and a suite of other early fitness related traits. Since egg size is determined by the mother, little attention has been given to potential sources of paternal effects on either egg size or initial offspring size. This study considers two processes by which the sire can affect the egg size and/or initial body size of his offspring, in the multiply mated cricket, Gryllus firmus. The first is a paternal genetic effect, whereby differences in offspring genotype result in differences in the efficiency of metabolising available resources. The second is a paternal environmental effect, whereby the quality or size of paternal investment varies among male phenotypes and this is correlated with the size of eggs the females subsequently produce. Using a one-locus two-allele recessive mutation for pale eye colour as a marker, a mating experiment was designed which enabled the discrimination between eggs fertilized by two males mated simultaneously to a single female. The results of this experiment suggest that sire effects on egg and initial body size occur through both processes. Eggs fertilised by the two males were significantly different at day ten of development, suggesting that the genetic contribution of the sire is affecting embryonic body size. Further, a negative correlation was found between the head size of the pale eyed male and the size of all the eggs that the female laid, suggesting an effect of male size of the amount of nutrients the female receives from her mates. The results of this study suggest that paternal effects may be both more common and more profound than previously thought, and that studies examining early fitness traits that are correlated to egg size or initial body size, in oviparous animals, should consider the possibility and importance of the paternal contribution.  相似文献
