Depressive symptoms are frequent in students and may lead to countless problems. Several hypotheses associate magnesium with depression because of the presence of this mineral in several enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters, which may play a key role in the pathological pathways of depression. The aim of this study was to assess whether magnesium intake could modulate depressive symptoms. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 402 Iranian postgraduate students studying in Malaysia to assess the relationship between magnesium intake and depressive symptoms. The mean age of the participants was 32.54?±?6.22 years. The results of the study demonstrated an inverse relationship between magnesium intake and depressive symptoms, which persisted even after adjustments for sex, age, body mass index, monthly expenses, close friends, living on campus, smoking (current and former), education, physical activity, and marital status. 相似文献

Objective
To examine the cross-sectional associations between dietary magnesium (Mg) intake and hyperuricemia (HU).Methods
5168 subjects were included in this study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Hyperuricemia (HU) was defined as uric acid ≥ 416 μmol/L for male population and ≥ 360 μmol/L for female. A multivariable logistic analysis model was applied to test the associations after adjusting a number of potential confounding factors.Results
The relative odds of the overall prevalence of HU were decreased by 0.57 times in the fourth quintile of Mg intake (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.35–0.94) and 0.55 times in the fifth quintile (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.30–1.01) comparing with the lowest quintile, and P for trend was 0.091. The results of multivariable linear regression also suggested a significant inverse association between serum uric acid and Mg intake (β = -0.028, P = 0.022). For male, the relative odds of HU were decreased by 0.62 times in the third quintile of Mg intake (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.40–0.97), 0.40 times in the fourth quintile (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.23–0.72) and 0.35 times in the fifth quintile (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.17–0.71) comparing with the lowest quintile, and P for trend was 0.006. Multivariable adjusted inverse association was also existed between serum uric acid and Mg intake in male population (β = -0.061, P = 0.002). However, no significant association was observed between dietary Mg intake and HU for female.Conclusions
The findings of this cross-sectional study indicated that dietary Mg intake is inversely associated with HU, independent of some major confounding factors. In addition, this association remains valid for the male subgroup, but not for the female subgroup.Level of Evidence

Whole blood, red blood cells (RBC), and plasma vitamin E (VE) levels in chicks fed dietary VE (dl-α-tocopheryl acetate, dl-αTa) supplementation in steps of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 30.0 mg/Kg were determined to examine their usefulness as an index of VE status. The increase in VE level was significant and linear in whole blood (r = 0.90), RBC (r = 0.89) and plasma (r = 0.93) in response to dietary VE intake. There was a close correlation between VE in plasma vs whole blood (r = 0.90), plasma vs RBC (r = 0.91) and whole blood vs RBC (r = 0.95). The plasma VE content was 1.2–1.8 times greater than that of whole blood, and 6.6–12.5 times greater than that of RBC. The plasma total lipids content was not affected by the dietary VE intake, whereas the level of VE in the plasma total lipids was significantly increased with increasing supplementation. Alpha tocopherol was the major isomer (ca 92 %) of VE in whole blood, RBC and plasma at hatching. The small proportions of β-tocopherol (ca 2 %), γ-tocopherol (ca 5 %) and α-tocotrienol (ca 1 %) observed at 1 day of age had decreased or totally disappeared by 7 days of age after feeding the VE-free basal diet. The data showed that in the chick, the whole blood and RBC levels of VE were as sensitive and reliable indexes of dietary VE status as was that of the plasma. 相似文献

Background
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary antioxidant intake (carotenoid, vitamin C, E and selenium) intake and metabolic syndrome (MS).Method
This cross-sectional study included 2069 subjects undergoing a regular health checkup. Biochemical test results and data on dietary intakes were collected for analysis. Adjustment for energy intake and multi-variable logistic regression were performed to determine adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for the relationship between dietary antioxidants intake and MS. The lowest quartile of antioxidant intake was regarded as the reference category.Result
Dietary vitamin C intake (P values for trend were 0.02 in energy adjusted analysis and 0.08 in multivariable adjusted analysis) had a negative association with MS, as did selenium intake in the second quartile (energy adjusted OR: 0.60, 95%CI: 0.43 to 0.85; multivariable adjusted OR: 0.60, 95%CI: 0.43 to 0.86). However, there was no significant relationship between dietary carotenoid and vitamin E intake and MS.Conclusion
Subjects with low intake of vitamin C might be predisposed to development of MS, while dietary selenium intake had a moderate negative association with MS. Dietary carotenoid and vitamin E intake was not associated with MS. 相似文献7.
Depression is an important cause of morbidity, and World Health Organization has predicted that it will be the second leading
contributor to the global burden of disease by 2020. Postgraduate students are at high risk for depression caused by the stress
of examinations, the academic environment, and relationship problems with peers, lecturers, and family members. Physical inactivity,
advancing age, unmarried status, and many other factors contribute to the development of depression in humans. Associations
between symptoms of depression and the intake of nutrients such as magnesium have been investigated; however, the relationship
between zinc intake and depression has not received as much attention. The purpose of the present study was to examine the
relationship between dietary intake of zinc and depression in postgraduate students. This study was conducted on 402 participants
with a mean age of 32.54 ± 6.22 years, including 173 (43%) women and 229 (57%) men. In this study, we found an inverse relationship
between dietary intake of zinc and depression. The results persisted even after we controlled for several potential confounding
variables related to depression symptoms, including age, sex, years of education, smoking status (current and past), and physical
activity. The results of this study show that long-term intake of zinc may modulate symptoms of depression. 相似文献

Circulating, cell-free microRNAs (miRNAs) are promising candidate biomarkers, but optimal conditions for processing blood specimens for miRNA measurement remain to be established. Our previous work showed that the majority of plasma miRNAs are likely blood cell-derived. In the course of profiling lung cancer cases versus healthy controls, we observed a broad increase in circulating miRNA levels in cases compared to controls and that higher miRNA expression correlated with higher platelet and particle counts. We therefore hypothesized that the quantity of residual platelets and microparticles remaining after plasma processing might impact miRNA measurements. To systematically investigate this, we subjected matched plasma from healthy individuals to stepwise processing with differential centrifugation and 0.22 µm filtration and performed miRNA profiling. We found a major effect on circulating miRNAs, with the majority (72%) of detectable miRNAs substantially affected by processing alone. Specifically, 10% of miRNAs showed 4–30x variation, 46% showed 30-1,000x variation, and 15% showed >1,000x variation in expression solely from processing. This was predominantly due to platelet contamination, which persisted despite using standard laboratory protocols. Importantly, we show that platelet contamination in archived samples could largely be eliminated by additional centrifugation, even in frozen samples stored for six years. To minimize confounding effects in microRNA biomarker studies, additional steps to limit platelet contamination for circulating miRNA biomarker studies are necessary. We provide specific practical recommendations to help minimize confounding variation attributable to plasma processing and platelet contamination. 相似文献

We studied the blood plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE, pseudocholinesterase) activity as a potential marker for differentiating such autoimmune pathologies as type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1), autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from diseases having similar symptoms but different etiology. The blood plasma pseudocholinesterase activity was analyzed for patients with different types of diabetes mellitus. We showed its fivefold increase in DM1 compared to the control group, while in the second type of diabetes, which is metabolic pathology, it decreases two times. It was demonstrated that the activity of blood plasma BChE in patients with AIT and RA also increased fivefold compared to the group of patients without autoimmune disorders. Thus, the butyrylcholinesterase activity increases in diseases of an autoimmune nature, whereas in metabolic pathology it has the tendency to decrease; it indicates the adequacy of the selected criterion for the further development of a screening test-system that would allow differentiation of autoimmune diseases from the diseases of another origin, but with similar symptoms. 相似文献

Whole-body selenium is regulated by excretion of the element. Reports of studies carried out using isotopic tracers have led to the conclusion that urinary selenium excretion is regulated by selenium intake but that fecal excretion is not. Because of the limitations of tracer studies, we measured urinary and fecal selenium excretion by mice with selenium intakes in the form of sodium selenite ranging from deficient to almost toxic. Tissue and whole-body selenium concentrations increased sharply between deficient and adequate selenium intakes, reflecting tissue accumulation of selenium in the form of selenoproteins. Once the requirement for selenium had been satisfied, a 31-fold further increase in intake resulted in less than doubling of tissue and whole-body selenium, demonstrating the effectiveness of selenium excretion by the mouse. Urinary selenium excretion increased with increases in dietary selenium intake. Fecal selenium excretion, which was 20 to 30?% of the selenium excreted in the physiological range, responded to moderately high selenium intake but did not increase further when selenium intake was increased to even higher levels. Thus, fecal selenium excretion contributes to regulation of whole-body selenium at physiological selenium intakes. The pattern of its response to the full spectrum of selenium intakes was different from the urinary excretion response, suggesting that the mechanisms of fecal and urinary routes of excretion are different. 相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the cross-sectional associations between dietary magnesium (Mg) intake and radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA), joint space narrowing (JSN), and osteophytes (OST) respectively.MethodsA total of 1626 subjects were included in the study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Radiographic knee OA was defined as Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) Grade 2 in at least one leg. JSN and OST were assessed individually according to the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) atlas. A multivariable logistic analysis model was applied to test the various associations after adjusting for potentially confounding factors.ResultsThe relative odds of radiographic knee OA were decreased by 0.53 times in the third quintile of Mg intake [odds ratio (OR) 0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.28–1.01], 0.40 times in the fourth quintile (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.17–0.94) and 0.34 times in the fifth quintile (OR 0.34, 95% CI 0.11–1.00) compared with those in the lowest quintile, while P for trend was 0.111. The relative odds of JSN were decreased by 0.49 times in the third quintile of Mg intake (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.28–0.88) and 0.37 times in the fifth quintile (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.14–0.98) compared with those in the lowest quintile, while P for trend was 0.088. There was no significant relationship between dietary Mg intake and the presence of OST.ConclusionsThe findings of this cross-sectional study indicate that Mg intake is inversely associated with radiographic knee OA and JSN. It supports potential role of Mg in the prevention of knee OA.

The diet of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) has been studied using a variety of techniques, but current methods still
suffer from problems that are difficult to solve. This study examined an alternative approach utilizing DNA as a prey biomarker.
Methods were developed for the preservation, extraction, and identification of prey DNA from krill collected in the field.
Group-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify diatom prey (Phylum: Bacillariophyta) and the results from
DNA clone libraries were compared with microscopic diet analysis. DNA analysis was superior to microscopy for prey detection.
However, differences in prey relative abundance estimates between the two techniques suggested some bias in the DNA-based
estimates. Quantification showed that large amounts of prey DNA had been successfully preserved and extracted. Overall the
results suggest that the application of DNA-based diet analysis to krill warrants further investigation, particularly for

Background
New renal biomarkers measured in urine promise to increase specificity for risk stratification and early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) but concomitantly may be altered by urine concentration effects and chronic renal insufficiency. This study therefore directly compared the performance of AKI biomarkers in urine and plasma.Methods
This single-center, prospective cohort study included 110 unselected adults undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass between 2009 and 2010. Plasma and/or urine concentrations of creatinine, cystatin C, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP), kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM1), and albumin as well as 15 additional biomarkers in plasma and urine were measured during the perioperative period. The primary outcome was AKI defined by AKIN serum creatinine criteria within 72 hours after surgery.Results
Biomarkers in plasma showed markedly better discriminative performance for preoperative risk stratification and early postoperative (within 24h after surgery) detection of AKI than urine biomarkers. Discriminative power of urine biomarkers improved when concentrations were normalized to urinary creatinine, but urine biomarkers had still lower AUC values than plasma biomarkers. Best diagnostic performance 4h after surgery had plasma NGAL (AUC 0.83), cystatin C (0.76), MIG (0.74), and L-FAPB (0.73). Combinations of multiple biomarkers did not improve their diagnostic power. Preoperative clinical scoring systems (EuroSCORE and Cleveland Clinic Foundation Score) predicted the risk for AKI (AUC 0.76 and 0.71) and were not inferior to biomarkers. Preexisting chronic kidney disease limited the diagnostic performance of both plasma and urine biomarkers.Conclusions
In our cohort plasma biomarkers had higher discriminative power for risk stratification and early diagnosis of AKI than urine biomarkers. For preoperative risk stratification of AKI clinical models showed similar discriminative performance to biomarkers. The discriminative performance of both plasma and urine biomarkers was reduced by preexisting chronic kidney disease. 相似文献16.

Objective: To characterize the dose‐response relationship between dietary fat to carbohydrate ratio and spontaneous caloric intake. Research Methods and Procedures: Male Long‐Evans rats consumed milk‐based liquid diets that differed in fat content (17% to 60% of kilocalories) but had equivalent protein content and energy density. In Experiment 1, rats consumed one of the diets (n = 9/diet group) as the sole source of nutrition for 16 days. In Experiment 2, diets were offered as an option to nutritionally complete chow for 4 days followed by a 3‐day chow‐only washout in a randomized within‐subjects design (n = 30). In Experiment 3, nine rats received isocaloric intragastric infusions of diet overnight, with chow available ad libitum. At least two no‐infusion days separated the different diet infusions, which were given in random order. Food intake was measured daily Results: Dietary fat dose dependently increased total daily kilocalories in each of the three paradigms. Discussion: These data imply that the postingestive effects of carbohydrate and fat differentially engage the physiological substrates that regulate daily caloric intake. These findings reiterate the importance of investigating macronutrient‐specific controls of feeding, rather than prematurely concluding that dietary attributes that covary with fat content (e.g., caloric density and palatability) drive the overeating associated with a high‐fat diet. 相似文献

Background
Mechanistic hypotheses suggest a potential effect of dietary fiber on breast carcinogenesis through the modulation of insulin-like growth factor bioactivity, estrogen metabolism and inflammation. An association between dietary fiber intake and breast cancer risk has been suggested in epidemiological studies but remains inconclusive. In particular, data is lacking regarding the different types of dietary fibers.Objective
The objective was to investigate the prospective relationship between dietary fiber intake and breast cancer risk, taking into account different types of dietary fiber (overall, insoluble, soluble and from different food sources: cereals, vegetables, fruits and legumes).Design
4684 women from the SU.VI.MAX cohort were included in this analysis as they completed at least three 24h-dietary records within the first two years of follow-up. Among them, 167 incident invasive breast cancers were diagnosed during a median follow-up of 12.6 years (between 1994 and 2007). The associations between quartiles of dietary fiber intake and breast cancer risk were characterized using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models.Results
Total fiber intake was not associated with breast cancer risk (HRQuartile4vs.Quartile1 = 1.29 (95%CI 0.66–2.50), P-trend = 0.5), nor was fiber intake from cereals (P-trend = 0.1), fruits (P-trend = 0.9) and legumes (P-trend = 0.3). In contrast, vegetable fiber intake was related to a decreased risk of breast cancer (HRQ4vs.Q1 = 0.50 (0.29-0.88), P-trend = 0.03). Overall vegetable intake (in g/day) was not associated with breast cancer risk (P-trend = 0.2).Conclusion
This prospective study suggests that vegetable fiber intake may contribute to reduce breast cancer risk, in line with experimental mechanistic data. 相似文献18.

The present study has been designed to investigate the impact of dietary iodine intake on lipid metabolism in mice, including
iodine deficiency and iodine excess. Different amounts of iodine mixed in the drinking water were continuously administered
to mice. The body weights and the levels of urinary iodine were measured 8 months after the treatment. Thyroid hormones in
the serum were detected by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein
cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were determined enzymatically by automatic analyzer. Results showed
that the urine iodine concentrations paralleled the amounts of iodine intakes. No statistical differences of body weights
among different groups were found. The levels of thyroid hormones were dramatically decreased in iodine deficiency while no
significant differences were found between iodine excess groups and normal iodine group. In iodine deficiency groups, the
levels of TG, TC, and LDL were increased at varying degrees. In iodine excess groups, the levels of TG in the male mice and
the levels of TC in the female mice were much lower than normal iodine group. In conclusion, dietary iodine intake may affect
the metabolism of serum lipids. Hypothyroid function induced by iodine deficiency may be responsible for the changes of lipids.
