Etiology and epizootiology. J. Bacteriol. 90:1036-1044. 1965.-Lethal bacterial infections of a variety of hatchery-spawned bivalve mollusk larvae and juveniles have been studied. The symptoms of the disease and the course of the infection are described. Four biotypes and five antigenic types of bacteria, pathogenic for the larvae of five species of bivalve mollusks, were isolated and described in some detail. All are gram-negative motile rods. Comparative studies were made of a fairly large number of similar bacteria isolated from presumably normal marine fauna. None of these was pathogenic for the bivalve larvae nor did they have antigens in common with the pathogenic group. The four biotypes had a number of characteristics in common that rarely were present in other cultures from marine fauna. Several antibiotic preparations proved to be of value in the treatment and control of the infection.  相似文献

Summarized data on the fauna composition, distribution, and ecology of gastropod and bivalve mollusks of the Utlyuk Liman in the northwestern part of the Sea of Azov is presented. The total number of mollusk species identified was 63; 43 species belonged to the class Gastropoda, and 20 species, to the class Bivalvia. The distribution of mollusks in the liman has extremely irregular character, whereas the distribution of species along the marine shore of Biryuchii Ostrov spit is more homogeneous. Euryhaline Mediterranean species represent the core of liman malacofauna; some taxa of the Ponto-Caspian zoogeographical complex (Dreissena polymorpha and species of the genus Theodoxus) and invader species from distant sea basins (Mya arenaria and Anadara inaequivalvis) were also identified.  相似文献

Attempts to introduce infectious or foreign material into oysters and other bivalve mollusks usually involve force or trauma because of immediate, prolonged adduction of the tightly closing valves. The soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria, is unable to seal its valves completely and relaxes readily, exposing soft tissue and a large siphon. This species is free from fouling organisms and is readily available at all seasons in the New England and mid-Atlantic areas. Suspensions of five strains of Vibrio sp. that cause bacillary necrosis in larval and juvenile bivalve mollusks were injected into the heart, siphon tissue, and the incurrent and excurrent siphon lumina of soft-shell clams. All vibrio strains caused significant mortality, usually within 2 days. Heaviest losses resulted from heart and excurrent siphon injections. No mortality occurred in control clams injected with seawater, broth, Serratia sp., and Escherichia coli. The soft-shell clam appears to be a useful animal for testing the pathogenicity of marine microorganisms for bivalve mollusks.  相似文献

The fauna of the Teete locality (Neocomian, Yakutia) includes bivalve and gastropod mollusks, palaeoniscid and chondrostean fishes, caudate and anuran amphibians, choristoderes, lizards, phytophagous and predatory dinosaurs, and theromorphs (cynodonts). The flora includes mosses, horsetails, lycopods, ferns, and conifers. The petrographic study showed the prevalence in the section of volcano-sedimentary rocks. The Teete paleobiota dwelled on the alluvial-lacustrine plain in conditions of warm humid climate influenced by intense volcanic activity.  相似文献

Macrobenthos in the southeastern Chukchi Sea, inclusive of the Chukchi Bight and Kotzebue Sound, were collected in 1985–1987 to determine factors influencing faunal distribution, abundance and biomass. Polychaetes, crustaceans, bivalve mollusks, and ophiuroid echinoderms dominated abundance. Polychaetes, bivalve mollusks, and ophiuroid echinoderms dominated carbon biomass with barnacles, amphipods, bryozoans, and tunicates occasionally dominant. Cluster analysis and ordination revealed relatively high faunal abundance and biomass under Bering Shelf Anadyr Water (BSAW) as well as under Alaska Coastal Water (ACW) in the Bight and Sound. Advected particulate carbon from the highly productive BSAW supported the abundant macrobenthos that served as food for numerous epifauna, which in turn furnished food for resident and transient populations of demersal fishes and marine mammals.  相似文献

A total of 23 species of marine invertebrates from Peter the Great Bay belonging to five taxonomic groups were screened for the activity of glutathione S-transferase, which is one of the main enzymes for the detoxification of organic xenobiotics. Significant variation of the enzyme activity (7.1 to 36900 nmol/min/mg of protein) was found among the different groups of organisms. The possible reasons for the differences in enzyme activity are discussed based on the example of bivalve mollusks.  相似文献

本文讨论了长臂虾总科在中国分布的3个科,即拟贝隐虾科、叶颚虾科和长臂虾科的属、种在中国的分布情况及区系特点。拟贝隐虾科和叶颚虾科种类较少,分布于热带海域,我国分别在南沙群岛和西沙群岛发现1属1种和3属3种,均为广布的常见种。长臂虾科是本总科中种类最多、分布最广、十分常见的科,包括2亚科102属,世界性分布,海洋、淡水均有,我国大量分布。其起源中心应在印度-西太平洋暖水区,一部分浅海沿岸种经河口进入淡水水域, 大量发展,很少种可分布至温带区边缘;另一部分在热带珊瑚礁环境大量发展,并与许多动物类群共栖或共生。长臂虾亚科基本上是浅海-淡水自由生活类群,我国已记录9属61种,主要分布于南部,多数为东洋界热带和亚热带种,分别属东洋界(淡水)和印度-西太平洋区(海水、半咸水);而极少数种分布至北方,温带性的淡水种有2种白虾,1种小长臂虾和仅见于东北部的条纹长臂虾,属于古北界区系(淡水),海水种有黄、东海的敖氏长臂虾及细指长臂虾,属于北太平洋温带区系(海水、半咸水)。隐虾亚科全部为海洋种,主要分布在热带、亚热带海域,以珊瑚礁为主要栖息地,大部分分布于印度-西太平洋海域,80%以上的种类或多或少与其他海洋生物共栖,自由生活的种很少。根据推论,隐虾类的起源中心应在印度-西太平洋热带水域的珊瑚礁环境, 并在这一水域得到了充分的分化与发展,分别适应与腔肠动物、双壳类软体动物、海绵动物、棘皮动物和海鞘类被囊动物共栖生活;而热带美洲的类群则是在隐虾类演化到可与石珊瑚类共栖时由印度-西太平洋水域扩散过去的, 共栖宿主仅涉及腔肠动物和棘皮动物。我国南海水域已发现31属96种,极少数种也分布到东海,属于印度-西太平洋热带水域珊瑚礁区系。  相似文献

An insufficiently known bivalve and gastropod assemblage from the Early-Middle Miocene (Tarkhanian-Chokrakian) of northern Sinop Province (Turkey), is analyzed. Environments of the assemblage are reconstructed for the Chokrakian as subtidal, with prevailing lime and sandy bottom and good aeration, and partially well vegetated. Impoverishment of the mollusk biocoenose in this part of the marine basin (only 18 bivalve and 22 gastropod species recorded) compared to other areas, including the closest regions, Bulgaria on the west and Georgia on the east, is emphasized. The relatively low diversity of the fauna is probably connected not only with insufficient collecting, but with special hydrological conditions. A special aspect of the fauna is highlighted by the presence of the bivalve Circomphalus foliaceolamellosus subplicatus (Orb.), which is rare in the Chokrakian.  相似文献

The phylum Mollusca is one of the major groups of Lophotrochozoa. Although mollusks exhibit great morphological diversity, only a few comparative embryological studies have been performed on this group. In the present study, to begin understanding the molecular development of the diverse morphology among mollusks, we observed early embryogenesis in a bivalve, the Japanese spiny oyster, Saccostrea kegaki. Although several studies have begun to reveal the genetic machinery for early development in gastropods, very little molecular information is available on bivalve embryogenesis. Thus, as a step toward identifying tissue-specific gene markers, we sequenced about 100 cDNA clones picked randomly from a gastrula-stage cDNA library. This basic information on bivalve embryology will be useful for further studies on the development and evolution of mollusks.  相似文献

In the marine environment, bivalve mollusks constitute habitats for bacteria of the Vibrionaceae family. Vibrios belong to the microbiota of healthy oysters and mussels, which have the ability to concentrate bacteria in their tissues and body fluids, including the hemolymph. Remarkably, these important aquaculture species respond differently to infectious diseases. While oysters are the subject of recurrent mass mortalities at different life stages, mussels appear rather resistant to infections. Thus, Vibrio species are associated with the main diseases affecting the worldwide oyster production. Here, we review the current knowledge on Vibrio–bivalve interaction in oysters (Crassostrea sp.) and mussels (Mytilus sp.). We discuss the transient versus stable associations of vibrios with their bivalve hosts as well as technical issues limiting the monitoring of these bacteria in bivalve health and disease. Based on the current knowledge of oyster/mussel immunity and their interactions with Vibrio species pathogenic for oyster, we discuss how differences in immune effectors could contribute to the higher resistance of mussels to infections. Finally, we review the multiple strategies evolved by pathogenic vibrios to circumvent the potent immune defences of bivalves and how key virulence mechanisms could have been positively or negatively selected in the marine environment through interactions with predators.  相似文献

Stratigraphic distribution and ecology of European Jurassic bivalves   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Documentation of bivalve generic and species diversity and times of first and last appearance through successive Jurassic stages in Europe, together with data on turnover and changes in taxonomic and ecological composition of the faunas, indicate an approximation to the establishment of an equilibrium fauna by early Middle Jurassic times. Subsequently faunal change was slight compared with the early Jurassic. A diversity increase through the Lower into the Middle Jurassic correlates with an increase in the area of epicontinental seas, while a major species extinction in the early Toarcian is bound up with the onset of widespread stagnation associated with a rise of sea level. An increase of the generic extinction rate at the end of the period correlates with a regional marine regression. The mean species longevity is estimated at 15×106 years. The ecological factors thought to control bivalve distribution are reviewed and four ecological associations distinguished: the reefal, lagoonal and nearshore and basinal marine.  相似文献

The composition and abundance of the macrobenthic fauna associated with soft-bottom beds of the large bivalve mollusks Crenomytilus grayanus and Modiolus modiolus were studied in the inner part of Vostok Bay (Sea of Japan) in spring 2010. More than 30 taxa of animals were found in the mussel beds. Comparison of the data obtained with three different methods of studying muddy-bottom mussel communities showed that 80% of their biomass and only up to 25% of the species composition and 19% of the abundance can be estimated by the photo method. Photo surveys disregard small and/or juvenile animals, as well as infaunal organisms, and thus do not give a complete picture of the species, size, and age composition and abundance of biota.  相似文献

Bivalves play vital roles in marine, brackish, freshwater and terrestrial habitats. In recent years, these ecosystems have become affected through anthropogenic activities. The ecological success of marine bivalves is based on the ability to modify their physiological functions in response to environmental changes. One of the most important mechanisms involved in adaptive responses to environmental and biological stresses is apoptosis, which has been scarcely studied in mollusks, although the final consequence of this process, DNA fragmentation, has been frequently used for pollution monitoring. Environmental stressors induce apoptosis in molluscan cells via an intrinsic pathway. Many of the proteins involved in vertebrate apoptosis have been recognized in model invertebrates; however, this process might not be universally conserved. Mytilus galloprovincialis is presented here as a new model to study the linkage between molecular mechanisms that mediate apoptosis and marine bivalve ecological adaptations. Therefore, it is strictly necessary to identify the key elements involved in bivalve apoptosis. In the present study, six mitochondrial apoptotic-related genes were characterized, and their gene expression profiles following UV irradiation were evaluated. This is the first step for the development of potential biomarkers to assess the biological responses of marine organisms to stress. The results confirmed that apoptosis and, more specifically, the expression of the genes involved in this process can be used to assess the biological responses of marine organisms to stress.  相似文献

Mollusk remains are abundant in archaeological sites in the Guanzhong Basin of Northwestern China, providing good opportunities for investigations into the use of mollusks by prehistoric humans. Here we report on freshwater gastropod and bivalve mollusks covering the time interval from about 5600 to 4500 cal. yrs BP from sites of Mid-Late Neolithic age. They are identified as Cipangopaludina chinensis and Unio douglasiae, both of which are currently food for humans. The shells are well preserved and have no signs of abrasion. They are all freshwater gastropods and bivalves found in pits without water-reworked deposits and have modern representatives which can be observed in rivers, reservoirs, and paddy fields in the studied region. Mollusk shells were frequently recovered in association with mammal bones, lithic artifacts, and pottery. These lines of evidence indicate that the mollusks are the remains of prehistoric meals. The mollusk shells were likely discarded into the pits by prehistoric humans after the flesh was eaten. However, these mollusk remains may not have been staple food since they are not found in large quantities. Mollusk shell tools and ornaments are also observed. Shell tools include shell knives, shell reaphooks and arrowheads, whereas shell ornaments are composed of pendants and loops. All the shell tools and ornaments are made of bivalve mollusks and do not occur in large numbers. The finding of these freshwater mollusk remains supports the view that the middle Holocene climate in the Guanzhong Basin may have been warm and moist, which was probably favorable to freshwater mollusks growing and developing in the region.  相似文献

A bivalve fauna of Early Ordovician (late Arenig) age is described from the Hsiangyang Formation of the eastern part of West Yunnan, China. The fauna contains elements in common with Early Ordovician faunas of southern Gondwanan areas such as the Montagne Noire and Morocco and with those of Avalonia, together with several previously undescribed taxa. The following taxa are new: Biseriodonta simplex gen. et sp. nov.; Glyptarca sinensis sp. nov.; Trigonoglyptarca magna gen. et sp. nov.; Erhaiconcha xiangyangensis gen. et sp. nov.; Fasciculodonta impressa gen. et sp. nov.; Yunnanoredonia laevis gen. et sp. nov.; Daliella gen. nov.; Goniophorina ( Goniophorina ) contracta sp. nov.; Haidongoconcha radialis gen. et sp. nov.; Eopterinea aequiconcha gen. et sp. nov. The bivalve fauna includes the most diverse glyptarcid fauna and the earliest nuculanid and paracyclid known hitherto.   Eastern West Yunnan belonged to the Indochina terrane and it is concluded that the bivalve fauna represents a high-latitude assemblage and that the Indochina terrane should be considered a component part of the Peri-Gondwanan continent in the Ordovician; its bivalve faunas contrast with those of neighbouring terranes which have affinities with those of lower latitudes.  相似文献

A major biotic crisis affecting virtually all major marine invertebrate clades occurred at the close of the Triassic. Species‐level data on bivalves from the Lombardian Alps of Italy record the extinction and suggest a possible causal mechanism. A significant decline in species richness is observed during the lower Rhaetian, where 51% of bivalve species, equally distributed among infaunal and epifaunal filter‐feeders, went extinct. The taxonomic loss at the middle Rhaetian was more severe, where 71% of the bivalve species were eliminated, including all infaunal and 50% of the epifaunal species. The data indicate that the extinction selectively eliminated infaunal bivalves.

An initial loss of bivalve species richness during the middle and upper Rhaetian correlates with changes in sedimentary facies related to a fall in relative sea level. This sea level fall is marked by the onset of peritidal micrites and shifting ooid shoals which may have rendered substrates unsuitable for both epifaunal and infaunal bivalves. The possible influences of temperature and salinity fluctuations are difficult to assess, but they may also have had a deleterious effect on the local bivalve fauna. The loss due to peritidal conditions is not consistent with the selective survivorship of epifaunal taxa recurring in overlying Jurassic rocks.

We propose that physiologic differences and selective resistance to physical stress are consistent with the pattern of selective extinction. Facies shifts associated with the marine regression are not sufficient to account for the extremely high magnitude of infaunal extinction. This selection against infaunal bivalves is probably caused by their decreased capacity to filter feed relative to their metabolic demands. A decrease in primary productivity could have selectively eliminated the infauna. Oceanographic processes or atmospheric darkening, perhaps caused by an extraterrestrial impact, could drastically limit food resources (primary productivity) and is consistent with the selective extinction at the end of the Triassic.  相似文献
