Summary Provenance analysis of archaeological materials is an essential tool of archaeometry but has been rarely applied to antique mosaics. Many mosaics are made of carbonate mosaic stones (tesserae). Hence, microfacies analysis offers a great potential in differentiating these limestone tesserae and provenancing their local, regional, imported or recycled origins. The methods of microfacies analysis and their prospects for studying mosaics are demonstrated by case studies of Roman mosaics from southern Germany (Kraiburg, Bavaria). Austria (Hemmaberg near Globasnitz, southern Carinthia), Italy (Asolo north of Padova) and late Punic and Roman mosaics from Tunisia (Carthage and Hergla). Microfacies-based provenance analysis comprises six stages: 1) Macroscopic assessment and definition of rock colour groups of tesserae, 2) Sampling based on rock-colour categories, 3) Definition of microfacies types and attribution to standard microfacies types based on thin-section criteria, 4) Evaluation of the mosaic site with respect to geological and paleontological data followed by comparisons of the microfacies inventory of the region with microfacies types of the tesserae, 5) Assessment of carbonate tesserae to specific geological rock/time units followed by suggestions of provenance sites. 6) Critical evaluation of provenance assessment within the archaeological context. Principal limestone colours do not necessarily coincide with specific limestone types. Uniformly coloured tesserae can represent different limestone types from different sources (cf. Kraiburg, Hemmaberg). On the other hand, a specific limestone type may be characterized by different rock colours (cf. Carthage). Provenance assessment of mosaic stones results in relatively narrow (Hemmaberg, Asolo) or only broad (Carthage, Hergla) indications of sites characterized by exposures of carbonate rocks whose microfacies criteria, geological age and rock colour correspond to those of the carbonate tesserae. The case studies argue for local and/or imported (Kraiburg) as well as regional provenances of the mosaic material (Hemmaberg, Asolo; source area within a distance between 10 and about 40 km) and indicate that off-cuts of building stones exploited within a regional frame might possibly have been used (Carthage). Differences in the composition and diversity of carbonate rocks used for the fabrication of mosaics reflect time-dependent changes in major quarrying and potential source areas (Carthage). Further provenance research of mosaics should be based on statistically representative tesserae samples, supplemented by microfacies studies of the building material used at the mosaic sites as well as investigation of nonlithic tesserae and the mortar bedding of the mosaics. The isotopic composition of limestone and dolomite tesserae also assists in the critical evaluation of microfacies categorization.  相似文献

Summary Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic shallow-water carbonate sequences of the ‘Pantokrator limestones’ are widely distributed in the Argolis Peninsula, southern Greece. Within this sequence are some reef or reefal structures. In the Mavrovouni Mountains, near Sarmeika, 6 km SE of the ancient theatre of Epidavros (Argolis Peninsula), a Norian-Rhaetian reef complex has been identified. This is the first well-documented Norian-Rhaetian reef in Greece. The main reef builders are coralline sponges (‘sphinctozoans,’ ‘inozoans’, and sclerosponges), followed by dendroid, cerioid, and solitary corals, and algae. The reef type corresponds to a ‘sponge-coral reef’.  相似文献

Summary Different types of builing stones have been macro-scopically and petrographically characterized at the ancient city of Sagalassos (SW Turkey). The natural building stones include limestone, conglomerate, breccia, marble, travertine, granite and sand-to siltstone of different qualities. The provenance of most of the building stones may be related to local lithological units, both in the immediate area of the city and on its territory. Also, some stone types were clearly imported from considerable distance. Throughout the history of the city, local beige and pink good quality limestone remained the most important building stone. Both the high quality white limestone from the territory of the city and the marbles imported from a distance of 250 km, represent only a small fraction of the total amount of building stones used. While the use of the white limestone can be considered to form a clear but limited trend from the Trajanic period (98–117 AD) onwards, the import of the marbles must be considered as a rare event. The selection of building stone went hand in hand with the appreciation for structural strength and suitability for carving complex architectural decoration, together with the desire to obtain a polychrome architecture.  相似文献

Summary Selected Late Paleozoic and Triassic limestone exposures were studied on northern Palawan Island, Philippines, with regard to microfacies, stratigraphy and facies interpretation. Although some of the outcrops were already reported in literature, we present the first detailed microfacies study. Late Paleozoic carbonates in the El Nido area are represented by widley distributed Permian and locally very restricted Carbonifenous limestones. Of particular interest is the first report of Carboniferous limestones in the Philippines dated by fossils. Fusulinids indicate a ‘Middle’ Carboniferous (Moscovian-Kasimovian) age of the Paglugaban Formation only known from Paglugaban Island. The Permian Minilog Formation consists mostly of fusulinid wackestones and dasycladacean wacke-/packstones. Fusulinid datings (neoschwagerinids and verbeekinids) provide a Guadalupian (Wordian-Capitanian) age. The depositional setting of the Middle Permian carbonates corresponds to a distally steepened ramp with biostromes built by alatoconchid bivalves locally associated with richthofeniid brachiopods. Late Triassic limestones occur in isolated exposures on and around Busuanga Island (Calamian Islands). The age of the investigated carbonates is Rhaetian based on the occurrence ofTriasina hantkent Maizon. Microfacies data indicate the existence of reefs (Malajon Island) and carbonate platforms (Kalampisanan Islands, Busuanga Island, Coron Island). Reef boundstones are characterized by abundant solenoporacean red algae, coralline sponges and corals. Platform carbonates yield a broad spectrum of microfacies types, predominantly wacke- and packstones with abundant involutinid foraminifera and some calcareous algae. These facies types correspond to platform carbonates known from other parts of Southeast Asia (Eastern Sulawesi and Banda Basin; Malay Peninsula and Malay Basin). The Philippine platform carbonates were deposited on and around seamounts surrounded by deeper water radiolarian cherts. The new data on facies and age of the Philippine Permian and Triassic carbonates contradict a close paleogeographical connection between the North Palawan Block and South China and arise problems for the currently proposed origin of the North Palawan Block at the paleomargin of South China. We hypothesize that North Palawan was part of the Indochina Block during the Carboniferous and Permian, separated from the Indochina Block during the Middle Permian and collided with the South China Block in the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the differential responses of flower opening to ethylene in two cut rose cultivars, ‘Samantha’, whose opening process is promoted, and ‘Kardinal’, whose opening process is inhibited by ethylene. Ethylene production and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase and oxidase activities were determined first. After ethylene treatment, ethylene production, ACC synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO) activities in petals increased and peaked at the earlier stage (stage 3) in ‘Samantha’, and they were much more dramatically enhanced and peaked at the later stage (stage 4) in ‘Kardinal’ than control during vasing. cDNA fragments of three Rh-ACSs and one Rh-ACO genes were cloned and designated as Rh-ACS1, Rh-ACS2, Rh-ACS3 and Rh-ACO1 respectively. Northern blotting analysis revealed that, among three genes of ACS, ethylene-induced expression patterns of Rh-ACS3 gene corresponded to ACS activity and ethylene production in both cultivars. A more dramatic accumulation of Rh-ACS3 mRNA was induced by ethylene in ‘Kardinal’ than that of ‘Samantha’. As an ethylene action inhibitor, STS at concentration of 0.2 mmol/L generally inhibited the expression of Rh-ACSs and Rh-ACO in both cultivars, although it induced the expression of Rh-ACS3 transiently in ‘Kardinal’. Our results suggests that ‘Kardinal’ is more sensitive to ethylene than ‘Samantha’; and the changes of Rh-ACS3 expression caused by ethylene might be related to the acceleration of flower opening in ‘Samantha’ and the inhibition in ‘Kardinal’. Additional results indicated that three Rh-ACSs genes were differentially associated with flower opening and senescence as well as wounding.  相似文献

Summary The Upper Triassic reefal limestones of the Oman Mountains were investigated with respect to their microfacies, palaeontology and community structure. The reef fauna described and figured for the first time occurs in parautochthonous slope deposits of the Arabian platform (Sumeini Group) and in allochthonous reefal blocks (‘Oman Exotics’, Hawasina Complex). The ‘Oman Exotics’ are tectonically dislocated blocks, derived from isolated carbonate platforms on seamounts in the Hawasina basin or in the South Tethys Sea. The lithofacies and fauna of these blocks comprise a cyclic platform facies with megalodonts, reef and reef debris facies. The reefal limestones are dated as Norian/Rhaetian by benthic foraminiferal associations (Costifera, Siculocosta, Galeanella) and typical encrusting organisms (Alpinophragmium, Microtubus). Some small ‘Oman Exotics’ are of Carnian age. The shallow-marine organisms include scleractinian corals of different growth forms, ‘sphinctozoans’, ‘inozoans’ chaetetids, spongiomorphids, disjectoporids and solenoporacean algae as the main reef builders, various encrusters like microbes, foraminifers, sponges and many different problematical organisms for the stabilisation of the reef framework and a group of dwellers including benthic foraminifers, gastropods, bivalves and a few dasycladacean algae. The reef communities are characterized by the coverage of organisms and distributional pattern. Analogies with the coeval reef deposits from the European part of the Tethys have been recognized. Some species, now collected in Oman, were also reported from American and Asian localities.  相似文献

Summary The Iola Limestone is the open-marine, carbonate portion of a Midcontinent cyclothem. It represents the transgressive and highstand systems tracts of a stratigraphic sequence. The sequence begins with a type 1 sequence boundary at the base of the Chanute Shale, which underlies the Iola. This surface can be recognized by the presence of a paleosol and as much as 15 m of incision. Part of the Chanute is probably an estuarine valley-fill package and represents the lowstand systems tract. The lowest member of the Iola Limestone is the Paola Limestone Member. Its base is sharp and locally has a thin shell lag. This contact is the transgressive surface and represents the onset of open-marine, clear-water carbonate sedimentation. It is a ravinement surface cut by a winnowing environment that appears as a ‘kink’ in the base-level surface. Landward of this ‘kink’, sediment accumulated to a subaerial base-level, but seaward of it sediment did not accumulate above a subtidal threshold probably controlled by wave base. Facies formed during regression also show the influence of a ‘kink’ in base-level. The Paola itself is the lower part of the transgressive facies tract. Overlying the Paola is the Muncie Creck Shale Member; its lower part is black and fissile, contains phosphate nodules, no unequivocally benthic fossils, and no discernible trace fossils. However, this facies is not present everywhere; in much of southeastern Kansas and just north of Kansas City, Missouri, it has been removed by submarine erosion. The only clues that this facies was ever deposited are reworked diagenetic phosphate nodules that occur as a lag on a hardground on top of the Paola. Where black shale and the immediately overlying, relatively unfossiliferous gray shale have been preserved, they are overlain by a shelly lag that incorporates bored and encrusted micritic cobbles-strong evidence of reworking. This erosional surface is interpreted as the maximum flooding surface. Such an interpretation suggests that the black shale formed during sea-level rise and coastal transgression rather than at sea-level highstand. This is further supported by geochemical properties of Midcontinent black shales. Overlying the maximum flooding surface are a thin gray shale (within the Muncie Creek) and the Raytown Lime-stone Member. In southern Kansas, the limestone contains an extensive phylloid-algal mound. In the subsurface, the elongate Raytown mound is perpendicular to the outcrop belt; it directly overlies a Precambrian structural element called the Bourbon arch, suggesting subtle tectonic control. In northern Missouri and in Nebraska, the upper Raytown contains carbonate tidal-flat deposits. The existence of these two facies suggests that the Raytown was deposited while base-level was stable rather than during base-level drop. The aggradational algal mound built into a positive sea-floor feature and did not shift position through the duration of the cycle. Progradational carbonate tidal flats had the chance to develop in the northern part of the field area; if base-level had been dropping, rapid regression would likely not have permitted accumulation of this facies at the top of the limestone. Coarse-grained deposits, an oncolite in southern Kansas and bioclastic packstones and grainstones in northern Kansas, indicate that the mound aggraded up to a subtidal base-level, presumably controlled by wave base. The carbonate tidal flats, on the other hand, filled accommodation space up to a subaerial base-level as they prograded out over this surface. There must have been two base-levels—one subtidal and the other subaerial—connected by the previously mentioned base-level ‘kink’ at the coastline. The Lane Shale, typically gray-green and silty, overlies the Iola. In a core from northern Missouri, the Lane Shale directly overlying the Raytown contains clay slickensides and a breccia of ‘fitted’ carbonate clasts, indicating subaerial exposure and qualifying the base of the Lane Shale as the top boundary of the Iola sequence. In northwestern Missouri, the Iola changes from a relatively clay-free limestone to mostly dark-gray, calcareous mudrocks with thin shell stringers. This represents a part of the basin dominated by clastic input. Stratigraphic interpretation implies that the Muncie Creek black shale formed during accommodation space increase and shoreline transgression. This is consistent with recent geochemical studies of Midcontinent black shales. This lithology formed as inland peat swamps underwent ravinement and organic matter was flushed onto the shelf. An influx of nutrients and plant material made available by sea-level rise and transgression while sediment was trapped in nearshore accommodation space was the primary cause of sediment starvation and anoxia in the basin.  相似文献

Summary  Biohermal and biostromal buildups were investigated in late Early and Middle Devonian carbonate complexes of the Tamworth Belt. The buildup types and subtypes were studied in three regions (Yarramanbully, Sulcor and, Wyaralong') to clarify their paleo-environmental position. Two stages of development are recognized: Incipient bioherms and bioherms. Incipient bioherms are carbonate buildups with organisms which commonly form true bioherms. They dominate the sediment with small growth forms but are not prolific enough to build large bio-frameworks. Small nodular and globular stromatoporoids characterize the incipient bioherms and are interpreted as stunted growth forms. In one location (‘Wyaralong’) the coarse stromatoporoid calcarenite represents a fore-reef facies, at Sulcor a shallow subtidal setting with moderate water energy can be deduced. The bioherms can be sub-divided into stromatoporoid-, stromatoporoid-Stachyodes-, and stromatoporoid-rugose coral bioherms. Their variable composition probably reflects growth and deposition in different zones of a reef complex and/or different proximity to areas of denundation indicated by high siliciclastic input. In the Tamworth region true bioherms occur only in the Moore Creek Limestone Member (Middle Devonian), and not in older carbonate successions. Biostromes are sub-divided into (1) incipient biostromes with stromatoporoid-heliolitid biostromes and alveolitid biostromes; (2) aggregate biostromes withAmphipora andStachyodes biostromes; (3) stratified biostromes; (4) mixed aggregate/stratified biostromes. The different types of biostromes are not limited to specific time-intervals, but rather to environmental conditions.
(1)  Incipient biostromes are characterized by laminar stromatoporoids and tabulate corals. Their forms are interpreted as initial layers of skeletons which were hampered by adverse conditions in growth. The stromatoporoid-heliolitid incipient biostrome (Eifelian Moore Creek Ls. Mbr., Yarramanbully) is characterized by abundance of dislodged laminar, ragged and tabular colonies associated with small globular and nodular heliolitids. An unstable substrate may have caused the growth disruptions. Decreasing grain-size of skeletal debris and increasing mud-content suggests deposition on a bathymetric gradient with deepening to the south. The alveolitid incipient biostrome (Eifelian Moore Creek Ls. Mbr., ‘Wyaralong’) is composed of nodular limestone with laminar alveolitids, stromatoporoids andSphaerocodium. It grades eastwards into dark nodular limestone with siliceous sponges and westwards it interdigitates with mudrich calcarenite. Deepening from west to east is implied. The incipient biostromes are interpreted as foreslope facies deposited at depths ranging from shallow subtidal (coarse-grained calcarenite) to deeper subtidal (fine-grained mud-rich calcarenite).
(2)  The term ?aggregate biostromes? is chosen to characterize large mono-or oligo-generic aggregations of sessile colonial animals with calcareous skeletons with ramose growth habit examplified byAmphipora- andStachyodes biostromes. Both genera of ramose stromatoporoids lived in quiet shallow subtidal environments, withAmphipora apparently enduring higher mud contents and possibly hypersalinity and/or oxygen deficiency.
(3)  Stratified biostromes are built mainly by tabular and laminar stromatoporoids and tabulate corals. Only one example from the Sulcor Limestone Member can be recognized in the Tamworth region. These deep and quiet water buildups formed when sedimentation rate was low. Possibly they indicate drowning of the carbonate platform.
(4)  Mixed stratified/aggregate biostromes are also deep water carbonate buildups. They exhibit an alternation of growth forms (ramose and stratified) at different levels. The mixed biostromes at yarramanbully (Emsian) show alternating growth habits varying in 50 m to 60 m-intervals from stratified growth form-dominated to aggregate growth form-dominated to mixed buildup facies. Sea level changes due to tectonism or orbital changes may be the cause. Small scale cyclic alternations of growth forms occur in irregular (decimeter) intervals in the Yarramanbully biostromes and in more regular intervals in Eifelian mixed stratified/aggregate biostromes. Possible control factors include sea-level or climatic changes and faunal interactions.
Bioherms and aggregate biostromes with ramose stromatoporoids are interpreted as-shallow water deposits, whereas the biostromes formed in deeper water. This differentation is crucial for reconstruction of the depositional history of the basin. Association of biohermal limestone with aggregate biostromes (i.e.Amphipora- andStachyodes limestone) reflects differentiation of a carbonate platform into reef and quiet water off-reef depositional centres. The sporadic development of deep-water buildups signals deposition over an increasing relief possibly caused by tectonism.  相似文献

Two new sites of condensed Hallstatt Red Limestones were found in the Rappoltstein mountain range near Berchtesgaden (SE Bavaria). Conodont and ammonoid assemblages allowed for a concise age-dating of the lower two of seven already described Hallstatt ammonoid horizons as latest Ladinian to Lower Carnian (Upper Triassic). Biostratigraphy, microfacies analysis and stratigraphic cross-correlation of other Hallstatt sites allowed the documentation of the Late Lower Carnian ‘Reingraben Event’ within a mixed allochthonous–autochthonous carbonaceous lithofacies at the Rappoltstein, and gave further insights into the special architecture of the so-called ‘Hallstatt deep swells’ and the Hallstatt Basin. δ18Ophos of conodont apatite was measured in order to reconstruct marine palaeotemperatures. The reconstructed low seawater temperatures may be at least due to different palaeoclimatic scenarios that could have preceded the ‘Carnian crisis’.  相似文献

The river types in Wallonia (Belgium) were defined according to the system B of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) taking into account obligatory and optional factors synthesized in three criteria: ‘size’, ‘slope’ and ‘natural region’. Under the hypothesis that benthic invertebrate assemblages would be specialized according to river type, a set of 627 faunal samples originating from an 11-year sampling period was tested to characterize river types with faunal assemblages. A multivariate approach led to gather 23 river types into seven groups exhibiting similar faunal assemblages. Using biocenotic metrics based on benthic invertebrate assemblages (e.g., the French standard IBGN), type-specific reference conditions and ecological status class limits were defined for each ‘natural’ river type group. Ecological potential was defined for heavily modified and for artificial (i.e., man-made canals) types. An ‘ecological status’ evaluation strategy was therefore developed and applied in the southern – and more natural – part of Wallonia, where many reference sites were available. In the northern part of Wallonia (i.e., the ‘Loess region’) where no high quality site was available, the expert judgement took a larger part in the definition of the reference conditions and of the ecological status class limits, in addition to the calculations. Two independent distribution gradients of taxa assemblages resulted from multivariate ordination: a first ‘saprobity axis’, as the taxa-sensitivity to organic contamination was increasing from ‘very resistant’ taxa (mainly located in the ‘Loess region’) to ‘sensitive’ and ‘very sensitive’ taxa (from the river types belonging to the Condroz, the Famenne, the Arden and the Jurassic regions) and a second axis characterizing the Meuse-specific faunal assemblage, gathering exotic species and typical limnophilous taxa of large heavily modified rivers. The ecological status monitoring management system developed in this study – i.e., the definition of faunal river type groups, related reference conditions and ecological status class limits – represents a proposal to be integrated in the ecological status assessment of biological elements for the implementation of the WFD and was tested in Wallonia. For the period 2000–2002 involving 349 different sites, the element ‘benthic invertebrate fauna’ was in that way classified ‘high status’ for 31.5% of sites, ‘good status’ for 31.5% and below ‘good status’ for 37% of sites. The best ecological status (i.e., 100% ‘high’ and ‘good’ status) was found in river type ‘Arden’s xenotrophic brooks with strong slope’ and in river types 8large rivers with medium slope’. The Late Eocene ‘Whiskey Creek’ deposit (Pysht Formation, Olympic Penisula, Washington State) formed at a methane-seep. Early diagenetic micrites and aragonite cement have δ13C values as low as −36‰ indicating that the seepage fluids contained methane. With respect to micrite samples, low δ13C values correlate with relatively high δ13O values andvice versa. Ongoing micrite formation after the cessation of the seepage during increased burial might have altered the isotopic composition of the microcrystalline carbonates toward lower δ13O values and higher δ13C values. Alternatively, the trend in isotope values may reflect a change in the composition of seepage fluids. The principal difference between these scenarios is the duration of seepage with respect to micrite formation. Two petrographically similar varieties of blocky calcite spar are related to different carbonate sources. The δ13C values range from −32 to −29‰ for one type of blocky spar and are either the result of methane oxidation or indicate thermal decarboxylation of organic matter. Low δ18O values are in favour of the latter. For the other type of spar, δ13C values as high as +6‰ indicate carbonate formation within the zone of methanogensis. The ‘Whiskey Creek’ limestone exhibits a chaotic fabric produced by a variety of processes, including bioturbation, concretionary carbonate formation, earlyin situ brecciation, carbonate corrosion, and late fracturing of the rock. Two varieties of micrite aggregates are responsible for the nodular fabric of the limestone. Smoothly-shaped pyritiferous micrite nodules are of diagenetic origin and formed in a manner similar to that which produces carbonate concretions. Apart from being induced by anaerobic oxidation of methane, their formation is proposed to be linked to iron reduction and sulphide formation. The second, dominant variety is represented by irregularly-shaped, nodular to angular micrite aggregates surrounded by massive rims of pyrite, resulting from carbonate corrosion. A pure, fluorescent seam-micrite, constructive in origin, lines cavities or surrounds micritic aggregates.  相似文献

 Two sets of single chromosome recombinant lines comparing 2D chromosomes from the wheat varieties ‘Ciano 67’ and ‘Mara’ with the common 2D chromosome of ‘Cappelle-Desprez’ in a ‘Cappelle-Desprez’ background were used to detect a diagnostic wheat microsatellite marker for the dwarfing gene Rht8. The genetic linkage maps place the wheat microsatellite marker WMS 261 0.6 cM distal to Rht8 on the short arm of chromosome 2D. By PCR analysis the WMS 261 alleles of ‘Mara’, ‘Cappelle-Desprez’ and ‘Ciano 67’ could be distinguished by different fragment sizes of 192 bp, 174 bp and 165 bp, respectively. A screen of over 100 international varieties of wheat showed that the three allelic variants were all widespread. It also demonstrated that a limited number of varieties carried novel WMS 261 variants of over 200 bp. Following classification of the individual recombinant lines for allelic variants at the WMS 261 locus it was possible to attribute a 7- to 8-cm reduction in plant height with the WMS 261-192-bp allele compared to the WMS 261-174-bp allele in the set of recombinant lines comparing 2D chromosomes of ‘Mara’ and ‘Cappelle-Desprez’. A height reduction of around 3 cm was detected between the WMS 261-174-bp allele and the WMS 261-165-bp allele in the recombinant lines comparing 2D chromosomes of ‘Cappelle-Desprez’ and ‘Ciano 67’. Rice has emerged as a model monocot for studies in agriculture and biotechnology due to its relatively small genome and a ready accessibility to plant material. Tissue culture is one of the tools required for genetic transformation and some breeding programs, and the selection of high-frequency regenerator types is essential for success in these technologies. Thirty-three rice entries with agricultural and biotechnological characteristics of interest were screened with the aim to identify the best regenerators. Entries that exhibited between 50% and 90% regeneration frequencies include ‘Taipei-309,’ ‘Super Dwarf,’ ‘Norin’ (japonica types), PI 312777, ‘Ali Combo’ (indica types), ‘STG-S,’ and ‘LA3’ (red rice types). One third of the entries tested were at least two times better at regeneration than the often-cited regenerator ‘Nipponbare.’ Those entries showing at least 85% frequency of greening or somatic embryo formation at 15 or 30 d on regeneration medium ultimately produced whole plants after 45 d on regeneration medium at high frequency (at least 40%); those entries not reaching the 85% threshold of greening by Days 15 or 30 exhibited moderate (15–40%) to low (less than 10%) frequency of whole plant regeneration. This greening response suggests the means for an early prediction system for identification of useful rice regenerator lines, which would be beneficial for high-throughput screening of germplasm as well as for decreasing the time and cost of in vitro culture.  相似文献

Colony defence in Apis mellifera involves a variety of traits ranging from ‘aggressive’ (e.g. entrance guarding, recruitment of flying guards) to ‘docile’ (e.g. retreating into the nest) expression. We tested 11 colonies of three subspecies (capensis, scutellata, carnica) regarding their defensiveness. Each colony was selected as reportedly ‘aggressive’, ‘intermediate’ or ‘docile’ and consisted of about 10,000 bees. We applied three stimulation regimes (mechanical disturbance, exposure to alarm pheromones, and the combination of both) and measured their behaviours by tracking the rates of outflying bees at the entrance sites of the test hives. We provided evidence that for mechanical disturbances the test colonies resolved into two response types, if the ‘immediate’ defence response, assessed in the first minute of stimulation, was taken as a function of foraging: ‘releaser colonies allocated flying guards, ‘retreater’ colonies reduced the outside-hive activities. This division was observed irrespective of the subspecies membership and maintained in even roughly changing environmental conditions. However, if pheromone and mechanical stimulation were combined, the variety of colony defensiveness restricted to two further types irrespective of the subspecies membership: six of nine colonies degraded their rate of flying defenders with increasing foraging level, three of the colonies extended their ‘aggressiveness’ by increasing the defender rate with the foraging level. Exact Tandem Repeats Analyzer 1.0 (E-TRA) combines sequence motif searches with keywords such as ‘organs’, ‘tissues’, ‘cell lines’ and ‘development stages’ for finding simple exact tandem repeats as well as non-simple repeats. E-TRA has several advanced repeat search parameters/options compared to other repeat finder programs as it not only accepts GenBank, FASTA and expressed sequence tags (EST) sequence files, but also does analysis of multiple files with multiple sequences. The minimum and maximum tandem repeat motif lengths that E-TRA finds vary from one to one thousand. Advanced user defined parameters/options let the researchers use different minimum motif repeats search criteria for varying motif lengths simultaneously. One of the most interesting features of genomes is the presence of relatively short tandem repeats (TRs). These repeated DNA sequences are found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, distributed almost at random throughout the genome. Some of the tandem repeats play important roles in the regulation of gene expression whereas others do not have any known biological function as yet. Nevertheless, they have proven to be very beneficial in DNA profiling and genetic linkage analysis studies. To demonstrate the use of E-TRA, we used 5,465,605 human EST sequences derived from 18,814,550 GenBank EST sequences. Our results indicated that 12.44% (679,800) of the human EST sequences contained simple and non-simple repeat string patterns varying from one to 126 nucleotides in length. The results also revealed that human organs, tissues, cell lines and different developmental stages differed in number of repeats as well as repeat composition, indicating that the distribution of expressed tandem repeats among tissues or organs are not random, thus differing from the un-transcribed repeats found in genomes.  相似文献

Summary A local intraplatform basin developed in the Gartnerkofel-Zielkofel area of the Carnic Alps (southern Carinthia, Austria) during the Middle Triassic (Ladinian). This basin was filled with a transgressive basinal sequence composed of the Uggowitz Formation and overlying Buchenstein Formation. At the northwestern slope of the Gartnerkofel, the platform carbonates of the Schlern Dolomite interfinger with the Buchenstein Formation, causing the formation of two depositional sequences. The Uggowitz Formation consists of the Uggowitz Breccia and the Kühweg Member. Sediments of the Uggowitz Breccia were formed by different types of gravity induced processes. The Kühweg Member is a thin sequence of silt-and fine-grained sandstones which were deposited in a slope to basin margin environment by turbidity currents. The overlying Buchenstein Formation consists of hemipelagic to pelagic limestones of Fassanian age with intercalated pyroclastic rocks (Pietra verde). Nodular limestones were deposited under slow rates of accumulation during a relative sea-level highstand. The uppermost Buchenstein Formation is composed of hemipelagic limestone beds with intercalated graded calcarenites and breccias of platform-derived debris, showing characteristics features of a fore-reef slope of the prograding Schlern Dolomite. Uggowitz Formation and basal Buchenstein Formation are interpreted as a transgressive systems tract, nodular limestones from the middle part of the Buchenstein Formation mark an early highstand systems tract, forereef slope sediments of the upper Buchenstein Formation formed during the beginning regression of a late highstand systems tract, the basal part of the overlying Schlern Dolomite probably reflects a lowstand systems tract. The intercalated bedded limestone facies within the Schlern Dolomite is characterized by large, platform derived blocks, slump structures, breccia beds, graded calcarenites and hemipelagic limestones indicating a forereef slope environent. This intercalated facies belongs to the Buchenstein Formation and interfingers with the Schlern Dolomite. Conodonts from this intercalated slope facies point to Late Fassanian age. Therefore, the two Middle Triassic depositional sequences of the Gartnerkofel area can be correlated with the depositional sequences ‘Ladinian 1’ and ‘Ladinian 2’ of the Dolomites, proposed byDe Zanche et al. (1993). A brief comparison with the basinal sequences of similar age of the karawanken Mountains and the Carnia is presented.  相似文献

Wietrznia section is situated between the shallow-water carbonate platform in the Kielce region and the Łysogóry basin. The transitional facies of the Wietrznia Frasnian includes two overlapping types of deposits: (1) thin-bedded dark-coloured limestone-marl alternations similar to the basin facies and (2) coarse-grained detrital limestones. Three lithotypes of limestones were identified: laminated or graded micritic, nodular, and detrital. The petrographic study makes it possible for the recognition of six major microfacies (MF 1 to MF 6). These lithotypes were formed by redeposition in a low- to high-energy environment. Their source material was the stromatoporoid-coral Dyminy reef in the central part of the Kielce region. Storms are considered to be the main agent, which causes in erosion and transport; micritic limestones and distal tempestites occur together, whereas detrital limestones are associated with proximal tempestites. Most probably, part of the detrital beds was formed as a result of grain-flow initiated under storm conditions.  相似文献

Microcuttings of three strains of ‘McIntosh’ apple that varied in their growth habit under field conditions were tested for their tolerance to three cytokinins (BA, kinetin, and 2iP) and one cytokinin-like compound (TDZ) in vitro. The three strains were ‘McIntosh’ (standard), ‘Macspur’ (intermediate) and ‘Wijcik’ (dwarf). For each cytokinin ‘Wijcik’ was more tolerant of high cytokinin levels than either ‘Macspur‘, which showed an intermediate tolerance, or ‘McIntosh’ which did not tolerate (died) high levels of cytokinins. These results show that ‘Wijcik’ exhibits multiple cytokinin tolerance in vitro. The relationship between growth habit and BA tolerance has been reported earlier. The present study demonstrates that cytokinins can be used to differentiate among growth types in apple. Summary In Southern Germany, two examples of travertines of different age and depositional morphology were examined in detail. Travertines are laminated carbonate rocks formed by precipitation from mineral and/or thermal waters. They include characteristic facies types, such as bushy layers (‘shrubs’) referred to calcification of branching microbes (‘Dichothrix’-morphotype), laminar microbial mats, peloidal layers, and gas bubble layers formed within the sediment. In travertines, microbial activity is the most important factor for carbonate precipitation. Tufas differ from travertines by their abundance of molds of higher plants (leaves, reed, moss, green algae). They may be associated with travertines, but do not exhibit strict travertine facies types. Tufas are common in normal fresh water environments. Contrary to travertines and tufas, calcareous sinters usually occur in restricted areas like spring fissures, caves, or in pores, where microbial activity is not totally absent, but not of paramount importance for precipitation. Pedogenetic processes, which can alter travertine deposits, are responsible for large-scale features such as tepee-structures, and some intraclastic layers, and microscopic structures like endolithic borings andMicrocodium. Travertines may also grade into lacustrine limestones with Characeae, ostracods, and aquatic gastropods.  相似文献
