Two hypotheses were tested: that the artificial sandbar opening decreases the richness, diversity and abundance of fishes and alters the fish composition in floodplain ponds; that the salinity variations influence fish richness, diversity, abundance, as well as composition. Results suggest that artificial sandbar openings did not reduce the richness or diversity of freshwater fishes in southern Brazil floodplain ponds. Nevertheless, this process causes an increase in salinity, which determines significant differences in species composition between natural and managed areas. In this sense, the artificial sandbar opening must be considered with caution, since the area of study is one of the most important conservation units in wetland systems of southern Brazil. 相似文献

The influence of prey abundance on the feeding ecology of two piscivorous species of coral reef fish
B.D Beukers-Stewart G.P Jones 《Journal of experimental marine biology and ecology》2004,299(2):155-184
Despite the potential importance of predation as a process structuring coral reef fish communities, few studies have examined how the diet of piscivorous fish responds to fluctuations in the abundance of their prey. This study focused on two species of rock-cod, Cephalopholis cyanostigma (Valenciennes, 1828) and Cephalopholis boenak (Bloch, 1790) (Serranidae), and monitored their diet in two different habitats (patch and contiguous reef) at Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia, over a 2-year period. The abundance of the rock-cods and the abundance and family composition of their prey were monitored at the same time. Dietary information was largely collected from regurgitated samples, which represented approximately 60% of the prey consumed and were unbiased in composition. A laboratory experiment showed that fish were digested approximately four times faster than crustaceans, leading to gross overestimation of the importance of crustaceans in the diet. When this was taken into account fish were found to make up over 90% of the diet of both species. Prey fish of the family Apogonidae, followed by Pomacentridae and Clupeidae, dominated the diet of both species of rock-cod. The interacting effect of fluctuations in prey abundance and patterns of prey selection caused dietary composition to vary both temporally and spatially. Mid-water schooling prey belonging to the families Clupeidae and to a lesser extent Caesionidae were selected for over other families. In the absence of these types of prey, apogonids were selected for over the more reef-associated pomacentrids. A laboratory experiment supported the hypothesis that such patterns were mainly due to prey behaviour. Feeding rates of both species of rock-cod were much higher in summer than in winter, and in summer they concentrated on small recruit sized fish. However, there was little variation in feeding rates between habitats, despite apparent differences in prey abundance. In summary, our observations of how the feeding ecology of predatory fish responded to variation in prey abundance provide potential mechanisms for how predation may affect the community structure of coral reef fishes. 相似文献

The relative abundance and size of prey fish in the stomachs of the predator Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro were compared with those recorded in the field to estimate prey selection. Fish samples were taken monthly in the Manso Reservoir (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil) immediately after the impoundment, from March 2000 to February 2001 (period I) and from March 2003 to February 2004 (period II). In period I, the small relative dominance of the prey in the environment seemed to have lead to random foraging. In period II, however, when the forage fish Moenkhausia dichroura was dominant in the environment, the predator shifted its diet, foraging mainly on this prey. Species with short relative body depth were positively selected. The prey size classes between 30 and 49 mm, and 50 and 69 mm standard length ( L S ) were the most abundant in the environment. Small prey were predominantly selected by A. pantaneiro . Even when a given prey or prey size was predominant in the environment, A. pantaneiro was a selective predator and maintained its preferences associated to prey type and L S , although it consumed the most abundant resource. 相似文献

The feeding ecology of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) living in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, northern Congo, was surveyed for one full year. This is the first record to
make clear the seasonal changes in the feeding habits of gorillas in a whole year, living in the primary lowland forest almost
completely undisturbed. Fecal contents, feeding traces, and direct observation were analyzed with reference to a fruit availability
survey. Although the gorillas fed largely on fruits in the forest, their basic diet was fibrous parts of plants, including
shoots, young leaves, and bark. Terrestrial herbaceous vegetation, such as monocotyledons of the Marantaceae and aquatic herbs
having much protein content and minerals, were frequently eaten even in the fruiting season. As these highly nutritious fibrous
foods were superabundant all year, the major foods of the Ndoki gorillas seemed to be those plants. However, they selected
fruits as their alternative food resources in the fruiting season. Gorillas foraged on many fruit species, while showing strong
preferences for some particular species. The swamp forest, including marshy grasslands, was an important and regular habitat
for the Ndoki gorillas. 相似文献

Feeding ecology and foraging behaviour of impala Aepyceros melampus in Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Torsten Wronski 《African Journal of Ecology》2002,40(3):205-211
Intersexual and seasonal variation in foraging behaviour of impala (Aepyceros melampus), was studied in the Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda. There was a moderate seasonal difference in foraging efficiency (as measured by ‘acceptable food abundance’), with a minimum in dry season and a maximum in Rainy season. The variation between sexes was more distinct with a pronounced minimum in time spent browsing of males in early wet season. By distinguishing between feeding time spent grazing and feeding time spent browsing the seasonal variation was confirmed. The proportion of foraging time spent feeding (expressed as ‘food ingestion rate’) showed an inverse pattern with a maximum in the late dry season (75.5%), decreasing values throughout the Rainy season and a minimum in early dry season (57.8%). Differences between sexes were explained in terms of reproductive demands and seasonal balance in terms of moderate climate throughout the year. Impala foraging patterns in the bimodal tropics (two Rainy seasons) is discussed and compared with unimodal tropics. The findings are matched against current ideas on optimal foraging. 相似文献

The observations that the gastric evacuation of a meal was accelerated after ingestion of an additional meal, whereas the evacuation of the latter meal was slowed down were compared to the predictions of mass-dependent models derived from experiments on evacuation of single meals. In contrast, the present study on cod Gadus morhua fed identical double meals of sandeel Ammodytes tobianus demonstrated that the evacuation of each meal was slowed down relative to the evacuation of a single meal. This fact could be explained by the exposed meal surface area being reduced while the meals were together in the stomach as it was expected by a surface-dependent cylinder interpretation of the square-root model. The cylinder model forecasted accurately the observed evacuation of each meal in the double-meal situation. The simple surface considerations of the model further explained the discrepancies between observed and expected evacuation rates using mass-dependent models, which suggested that the above finding of the previous studies was an artefact. The ability of the cylinder model to predict properly also the evacuation of multiple meals in juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch indicated that the model would apply to gastric evacuation in small-sized predatory fishes as well. This should increase considerably its value as a generic tool for studies on the feeding biology of fishes in the wild. 相似文献

We analyzed the stomach contents of 40 estuarine dolphins, Sotalia guianensis (van Benédén 1864), beached on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, between February 2000 and February 2007. A total of 223 prey items were identified, including 18 species of teleosts and 5 species of cephalopods. The index of relative importance (IRI) showed that Larimus breviceps, Haemulon plumieri, Lutjanus synagris, Trichiurus lepturus, Mugil curema, and Diapterus rhombeus were the six most important species. The IRI showed that L. breviceps was the main prey for both adults and the young. H. plumieri was the most important for the males and T. lepturus for the females. Seven species of teleosts and two of cephalopods were recorded in the diet of estuarine dolphins for the first time in the country. Our results suggest that the estuarine dolphin can be a feeding specialist and that foraging activity occurs mainly in estuarine areas, where the animals can use passive listening to detect prey. 相似文献

The grazing rates and feeding preferences of the dinoflagellates Pfiesteria piscicida and a cryptoperidiniopsoid on the alga Rhodomonas sp. and fish blood cells were calculated at different ratios of the two food types and at different total food densities. Data from 6 h grazing periods within microcosms were used to calculate grazing rates. Grazing rates of both dinoflagellates increased linearly with an increased ratio of blood cells to Rhodomonas, and P. piscicida had a higher maximum grazing rate than the cryptoperidiniopsoid. The grazing rate of P. piscicida on Rhodomonas also increased with increased Rhodomonas densities relative to the blood cells, but increased densities of Rhodomonas did not increase the grazing rate of the cryptoperidiniopsoid, suggesting a lower feeding threshold for this species. Both dinoflagellates demonstrated a preference for fish blood cells over Rhodomonas cells, with no significant difference in the index of preference between the two species. Total food abundance affected the degree of preference differently for each dinoflagellate species. A higher index of feeding preference was attained by P. piscicida when resource levels were high, while the cryptoperidiniopsoid did not show this response. A preference for fish blood cells occurred at all food ratios for both dinoflagellates, including when blood cells were scarce relative to the alternate food type (15% of total available food). These results suggest that these strains of P. piscicida and the cryptoperidiniopsoid share similar feeding preferences for the prey types tested, although cryptoperidiniopsoids have not been associated with fish kills. 相似文献

Summary The myctophid, Benthosema glaciale, was found to occur in the region of Davis Strait, but not in northern Baffin Bay. The factors that limited its northern range were believed to be the cold temperature and the long periods of day light in Baffin Bay. During the day B. glaciale was found at a depth of between 300 and 900 m with the population concentrating at about 500 m. At night about 46% of the population migrated to the upper 65 m to feed on copepods, primarily Calanus finmarchicus stage V and C. hyperboreus stage IV for which they showed a high degree of selectivity. The weight of stomach contents of fish with 100% full stomachs was equal to about 3% of their body weight. Feeding occurred mainly at night in the upper layers above the coldest layer of water with a temperature of about 0.5 °C. The biomass of zooplankton and myctophids m-2 were similar to those for these groups on the Nova Scotia slope during June. The fish fed on the same size range of prey in Davis Strait as on the Nova Scotia slope even though the zooplankton species composition was different in the two regions. 相似文献

Predator behaviors influence, and are influenced by, prey and competitor behaviors. Jaguars (Panthera onca), pumas (Puma concolor), and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) coexist throughout their geographic range as the three largest predators in a multi-predator community across diverse environments. This study tested for non-random segregation and overlap in the activity patterns of these felids and their shared prey in the southern buffer zone of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, in southern Mexico, using camera traps during February to August 2019. We detected little temporal segregation between the nocturnal activities of jaguars, pumas, and ocelots, although pumas were more active closer to dawn. Jaguars had low activity overlap with species likely to be common prey, whereas ocelots had high overlap with their potential prey. Pumas displayed finer-scale similarities in activity with species likely to be common prey. In an understudied area of conservation importance, this study shows that temporal segregation is an unlikely mechanism of coexistence. Further research should incorporate spatio-temporal avoidance and dietary differences to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive coexistence between generalist species in a diverse assemblage of threatened felids. Abstract in Spanish is available with online material. 相似文献

From June 1994 to October 1995, I conducted a study of the feeding ecology of one group of black-headed uacaris (Cacajao melanocephalus melanocephalus) in Pico da Neblina National Park, Brazil, near the Venezuelan border (01°10N to 00°26S, 65°03W to 66°52W). Of a total of 429 feeding records, 89% corresponded to fruits from which black-headed uacaris ate ripe and unripe seeds, mesocarps and arils. Seeds were the single most important food item year-around, corresponding to 81% of the feeding records for fruits. Black-headed uacaris used 120 different plant species in 32 families as food. The 3 most important plant species in their diet, Micrandra spruceana, Eperua leucantha, and Hevea braziliensis (all trees), accounted for 38% of the feeding records for fruits. These species produced fruits that were protected by very hard green husks, were barochorous, did not have fleshy mesocarps, and were slow to mature, thus being available as unripe fruits for long periods. The second and third most important species in the diet of black uacaris, Eperua leucantha and Hevea braziliensis, were dominant in the forest: approximately 30% of trees 10 cm dbh sampled in a 2-ha botanical transect at the study site. I discuss the formation of large social groups of black-headed uacaris in Pico da Neblina National Park in light of the peculiar floristic composition of the study site. 相似文献

Feeding ecology of fish assemblage in a costal river of the Atlantic Rain Forest in Southern Brazil was investigated. Monthly samples using different fishing techniques were completed on a section of the river characterized as a freshwater environment, and an adjacent tide-influenced estuarine section. Species were grouped into three major Feeding Mode Functional Groups: Zoobenthivore, Omnivore and Detritivore. The river section with the greatest occurrence was the site where the most abundant species are likely to feed most intensively. Freshwater strangler species (Cyphocharax santacatarinae - detritivorous, Rhamdia quelen and Oligosarcus hepsetus - zoobenthivorous) presented higher stomach repletion in the freshwater environment while marine migrants (Genidens genidens and Etropus crossotus - zoobenthivorous) and estuarine residents (Bairdiella ronchus - zoobenthivorous) presented higher repletion in the tide-influenced estuarine stretch. Use of food resources was influenced by spatial and temporal variations linked to environmental characteristics such as salinity, habitat heterogeneity, life history evolution, feeding specialization and resource partitioning. Hypotheses concerning potential keystone species, ecosystem engineers or strong interactors were also discussed. 相似文献

We assessed the magnitude, composition, and spatial and temporal patterns of road mortality of native vertebrates on two highways
in southern Brazil from 18 January 2003 to 26 January 2004. The highways cross remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, a global
biodiversity hotspot, and differ in vehicle traffic and surrounding landscape. We compared the road-kill magnitude and composition
of birds, mammals, and reptiles between roads and seasons. We used a modified K statistic to depict the spatial patterns of roadkills of these groups and tested the association between vehicle traffic
and road mortality through linear regression. We recorded 869 kills of 92 species. The two roads differed regarding the abundance
and composition of roadkills. Reptile road mortality was higher in summer than winter, but all other groups did not show significant
difference in the magnitude of mortality between seasons. The composition of killed assemblages differed significantly for
some of the taxonomic groups among seasons. We found only one positive association between roadkills and vehicle traffic (reptiles
on one of the roads), suggesting that vehicle flow does not explain the road-kill temporal variation on these roads. Total
vertebrate, bird, and mammal roadkills showed significant spatial aggregations possibly due to variation in vehicle traffic,
highway design, and local landscape condition and arrangement. With expected expansion of the road network, mitigation measures
for multi-species assemblages should include habitat protection, soil use regulation, road crossing structures, speed reducers,
and campaigns to raise people’s awareness about road impacts on wildlife. 相似文献

The wintering diet of Common Terns Sterna hirundo was studied by using 714 pellets collected on roosting sites at the mouth of the Lagoa dos Patos and on adjacent coastal beaches, in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, from March 1999 to February 2000. A total of 12 340 individual prey items of 35 different food types was found. Fish was the most important food type in the diet, constituting 32% by number and 93% by mass. Insects contributed 67% by number but only 3% by mass. The main food types were sciaenid fishes Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Micropogonias furnieri, Cynoscion guatucupa and Macrodon ancylodon. Several of these are important commercial species; fisheries potentially impact food availability to the terns, and terns may contribute significantly to the natural mortality of these fishes. Clupeiform fishes, the urophycid fish Urophycis brasiliensis and flying ants (Camponotus sp.) were also important. Species composition of the diet (food types), both by number and by mass, differed significantly between months. Prey sizes ranged in length from 12.7 mm to 217.4 mm. The average estimated total length of fish taken was 77.7 mm, but the mean differed significantly among prey species. The importance of demersal sciaenids to the diet of the Common Tern, a surface predator, may be explained by their association with aquatic predators, especially adult Bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix and Striped Weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa, and the Franciscana Dolphin Pontoporia blainvillei, which drive these fish to the surface. The occurrence of flying ants in the diet was related to offshore winds, which carried these insects out to sea. The occasional high availability of insects possibly changed the cost/benefit relationship of several food types, causing diet changes. The high number of prey species, the temporal variations in the composition of the diet and the wide range of prey sizes are evidence of the high dietary plasticity of the Common Tern, at wintering areas in southern Brazil. 相似文献
