A large size variation amongst life histories for stream-dwelling Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was found and the relative effect of life histories on size varied over time. As early as December (age 0+ years), fish that later smolted at age 2+ years were significantly larger than fish that did not smolt at age 2+ years. In contrast, there were no mass differences at age 0+ years between fish that would mature or not at age 1+ years (October). The mass differences between smolts and non-smolts persisted until smolting, and differences between mature and immature fish first appeared in May (age 1+ years). Following September (age 1+ years), there was also a significant interaction between smolting and maturity. Previously mature and immature age 2+ year smolts were not significantly different in size, but immature age 2+ year non-smolts were much lighter than mature age 2+ year non-smolts. Based on mass differences, the apparent 'decision' to smolt occurred c . 5 months before (winter, age 0+ years) the decision to mature (late spring, age 1+ years). In addition to strong seasonal growth variation, sizes of freshwater Atlantic salmon were largely structured by the complex interaction between smolt-age and maturity.  相似文献

High‐latitude lakes are particularly sensitive to the effects of global climate change, demonstrating earlier ice breakup, longer ice‐free seasons, and increased water temperatures. Such physical changes have implications for diverse life‐history traits in taxa across entire lake food webs. Here, we use a five‐decade time series from an Alaskan lake to explore effects of climate change on growth and reproduction of a widely distributed lacustrine fish, the three‐spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We used multivariate autoregressive state‐space (MARSS) models to describe trends in the mean length for multiple size classes and to explore the influence of physical (date of ice breakup, surface water temperature) and biological (density of con‐ and heterospecifics) factors. As predicted, mean size of age 1 and older fish at the end of the growing season increased across years with earlier ice breakup and warmer temperatures. In contrast, mean size of age 0 fish decreased over time. Overall, lower fish density and warmer water temperatures were associated with larger size for all cohorts. Earlier ice breakup was associated with larger size for age 1 and older fish but, paradoxically, with smaller size of age 0 fish. To explore this latter result, we used mixing models on age 0 size distributions, which revealed an additional cohort in years with early ice breakup, lowering the mean size of age 0 fish. Moreover, early ice breakup was associated with earlier breeding, evidenced by earlier capture of age 0 fish. Our results suggest that early ice breakup altered both timing and frequency of breeding; three‐spine stickleback spawned earlier and more often in response to earlier ice breakup date. While previous studies have shown the influence of changing conditions in northern lakes on breeding timing and growth, this is the first to document increased breeding frequency, highlighting another pathway by which climate change can alter the ecology of northern lakes.  相似文献

Littoral age 0+ fish were studied with respect to spatio-temporal heterogeneity in the deep-valley ?ímov Reservoir (Czech Republic) from June to October 2007 using point abundance sampling by electrofishing. The abundance and diversity of age 0+ fish in different types of littoral habitats were examined along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir during daytime. The impact of some physical attributes of the studied littoral habitats, e.g. slope steepness and substrate size, along with the season was the main factors affecting the distribution of age 0+ fish. The level of structural complexity was not a strong determinant, because the overall diversity and structural complexity of the available littoral habitats were relatively too low to have greater impact on the age 0+ fish distribution. The physical factors markedly influenced the spatial segregation between the two most important taxa in the reservoir—percids and cyprinids. Perch was the only representative of age 0+ percids in the littoral zone, which occupied steep-sloped habitats early in the season. In contrast, gently sloped habitats were mainly occupied by cyprinids later in the season. Species diversity was reflected in the occurrence of age 0+ cyprinids, achieving a maximum in gently sloped habitats in October. The effect of the longitudinal gradients on age 0+ fish distribution and diversity was generally far less significant, but was rather decisive during the period of a pronounced longitudinal trophic gradient during the summer season.  相似文献

Relationships between growth at sea, smolt size and age at sexual maturation of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were tested. The fish were offspring of brood stocks sampled in eight Norwegian rivers at latitudes between 59° and 70° N, hatchery reared and released at smolting at the mouth of the River Imsa (59° N). Smolt size influenced the subsequent growth rate of Atlantic salmon. The larger the fish were at release, the slower the yearly length increment at sea. Mean sea age at sexual maturity, measured as proportion of the returning adults attaining sexual maturity at sea age 2 years, was significantly correlated with mean growth rate during the first year at sea and mean smolt size ( r 2= 0·74, P < 0·001). Fish attaining maturity at a relatively high sea age were more fast growing during their first year at sea than those maturing at a younger age. The results indicate that high sea age at sexual maturation is a population-specific characteristic and associated with high early growth rate at sea.  相似文献

Mean whole energy content ( E wb) of age 0 year walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma was 19.928 KJ g−1 dry mass in 3943 fish collected from different habitats around the Pribilof Islands frontal structure, south-east Bering Sea, during September 1994–1996 and 1999. It varied, however, with habitat type. Fish residing offshore had higher E wb than fish residing inshore of the frontal regions. Age 0 year walleye Pollock E wb changed in a non-linear fashion with fish size, with larger juveniles typically having higher E wb. Size thresholds were identified at which the relationship between age 0 year walleye pollock E wb and L S changed. One such threshold was found at 46 mm where E wb reached a local minimum. Another threshold was found at 80 mm beyond which E wb tended to remain constant with size. Overall mass-length and E wb-length residuals were highly correlated with each other ( r =0.73, P ≪0.0001). The slope of the regression, however, was higher for smaller fish. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the observed ontogenetic variation in nutritional status and the role of age 0 year walleye pollock late summer E wb on survival over their first critical winter of life.  相似文献

I examine how dispersal of juvenile creek chubs (Semotilusatromaculatus) from beaver ponds into adjacent stream environments interacts with temporal abiotic variability to influence fish foraging, growth, and long-term persistence in the lotic ecosystem. Minnow trapping in upstream and downstream beaver ponds, along with weir traps used to monitor directional movement, indicated that most chubs colonized the stream from the downstream beaver pond. Large annual fluctuations in density of age 0 creek chubs occurred in the stream over a 10-year sampling period. Multiple regression analysis indicated that stream temperature, precipitation, and the density of reproductive creek chubs were not correlated with summer density of age 0 chubs in the stream. The factor most strongly associated with increased density of age 0 creek chubs was creation of the downstream beaver pond during the 6th–7th years of the study, suggesting dispersal from the pond was the primary factor determining age 0 fish density in the stream. Most individuals in the strong year classes neither persisted in the stream through their first winter nor resulted in an increased abundance of older age classes in later years. Comparison of age 0 fish density in summer to the proportion of fish surviving to age 1 in spring suggested that overwinter mortality was density dependent. Furthermore, a comparison of the size structure for age 0 individuals in summer to age 1 individuals the following spring indicated that winter mortality was size dependent. Experiments in an artificial stream adjacent to the natural channel revealed that fish growth was strongly density dependent, decreasing as fish density increased across both spring and summer, and elevated and low discharge. The decline in invertebrate prey captured by the fish and the subsequent decline in fish growth appeared to be particularly pronounced under low discharge in summer. Changes in juvenile creek chub density had no significant effect on benthic insect or crustacean abundance, suggesting that exploitative competition for limited invertebrate drift resources was a more important cause of density- dependent growth than depressed local benthic invertebrate abundance. These results suggest that lotic regions adjacent to beaver ponds act as potential reproductive “sinks” for dispersing juveniles confronting seasonal and flow-mediated restrictions on resource acquisition and growth, and the occurrence of seasonal bottlenecks to their survival, especially harsh winter conditions. The distribution and diet of age 0+ fish were studied in the deep canyon‐shaped Římov Reservoir (Czech Republic), which is characterized by a longitudinal trophic gradient. During late summer of two years, 0+ fish were sampled from inshore and offshore habitats along the longitudinal reservoir axis. Offshore catches of 0+ fish from the surface layer were dominated by roach (Rutilus rutilus ), bream (Abramis brama ) and perch (Perca fluviatilis ), whereas in the deeper open water perch predominated. Inshore catches of 0+ fish were constituted mainly by perch and roach. The proportions of roach in the inshore catches were highest at the upper and most eutrophic part of the reservoir, whereas the proportions of perch in the inshore catches were higher at the downstream areas. Total catches of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish increased upstream in the reservoir. Offshore 0+ perch were of consistently smaller size than inshore 0+ perch. Inshore 0+ perch had significantly smaller size at the upstream reservoir part than at the downstream, more lacustrine regions. The diet of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish consisted predominantly of crustacean zooplankton. The level of aggressive behaviour in three populations of grayling Thymallus thymallus was lower in the hatchery strains than in the wild strains at the age of 0+ years. Due to similar rearing conditions, genetic divergence of the strains was most likely. As the hatchery fish used were second generation hatchery fish, this suggested that genetic changes in the hatchery can be very rapid. Therefore, it would be beneficial to use the progeny of wild fish for re-introductions. Differences in aggressiveness between the strains still existed at the age of 1+ years, when the strains had been reared under common hatchery conditions for a year. A relatively short period in the hatchery may maintain the original behavioural characteristics of the fish and thus give the best possible basis for survival in the natural environment.  相似文献

绿太阳鱼是2015年4月在大别山区淠河流域支流中新发现的入侵鱼类。利用2015年7月从黑沟中采集的78尾绿太阳鱼标本,对该物种的形态特征进行了详细测量和分析。结果发现绿太阳鱼种群内的形态相似性较高,但还存在一定的形态差异。相比性别,年龄是造成这种形态差异的主要原因。雄性从Ⅰ龄开始出现显著的形态分化,而雌性差异并不显著。这种形态学的差异完全符合雄鱼筑巢护卵的习性,具体表现在雄鱼头部指标(D1-2、D2-3、眼间距、眼后头长、头长)、臀鳍附近指标(D5-7、D5-8)、背鳍基部指标(D6-8)和尾柄处指标(D9-10)增大。同时相比Ⅰ龄以上的雄鱼,雌鱼和0龄雄鱼的尾柄指标(D8-10、D8-9)较长,身体更适于流水环境。这种雌雄体型上的变化,将有助于雄鱼占领溪流环境中的静水区(深潭),而雌鱼和0龄鱼占领流水区(急滩、湍流),这为该种群适应山区溪流的水文环境,合理分配生态位提供了便利条件,同时也使其对大别山区其他鱼类具有较大的生态危害潜力。  相似文献

The goldlined seabream Rhabdosargus sarba (Forskål, 1775) is farmed in several countries of the Western Pacific Rim and is a candidate species for aquaculture in the Gulf States of the Middle East. This study was undertaken to examine the onset and patterns of maturity in male goldlined seabream in support of the development of practical hatchery techniques. The testes of 337 male fish (0 + to 7 + , average FL 183 ± 20 to 315 ± 12 mm) collected from the Oman trap fishery (August 2001–April 2002; September 2002–2003) were classified into four stages, based on cell type (immature, developing, active or resting). Four spermatogenetic cell types were identified in the testes spermatogonia (types a and b), spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa. Active testes appeared more regularly during the peak of the reproductive season in January and February. In March, resting testes were observed indicating the end of the reproductive season. There was clear evidence of protandry. Intersex gonads were observed in male fish from age 0 + to 7 + (33% at age 0 + to 75% at age 7 + with maximum 82% intersex frequency observed at age 5 + ). From the evidence presented, male fish age 1 + produced free‐flowing sperm under slight abdominal pressure during the period November–March.  相似文献

Morphological changes in otolith shape with age, of young (<age 3) red snapper were examined through shape analysis and tested as an objective method for age determination. Otoliths from two collections of juvenile fish (hatchery and wild) were used in the study. First, shape analysis was applied to a series of known-age otoliths from hatchery-reared age 0, 1 and 2 fish. Multidimensional scaling and non-parametric analysis of similarities showed significant shape differences among the three age classes of fish. Discriminant function analysis and cross-validation classification showed 65.6% correct age classification based on shape variables alone, and 86.7% correct age classification with inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Subsequently, the method was applied to otoliths from a series of age 0, 1 and 2 wild caught red snapper. Otoliths from wild fish showed a similar age classification success rate of 68.9% based on shape variables alone and 86.7% correct age classification with the inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Ageing of juvenile red snapper through otolith increment counts has been difficult in past studies and this study provides an alternative, objective method of otolith shape analysis for ageing young fish of this species.  相似文献

The size and age composition, growth and diet of the western minnow, Galaxias occidentalis, in the southern branch of the Collie River in south-western Australia were determined from samples collected at approximately monthly intervals between January 1984 and December 1986. The prominent, narrow hyaline zone on otoliths was shown to be formed annually and thus valid for ageing these fish. An examination of the otoliths of 4711 fish indicated that 69.2 and 26.8% of the fish caught belonged to the 0 + and I + age classes, respectively. While the vast majority of the remaining fish represented the II + age class, a few III + and IV + and one V + fish were also recorded. Growth was seasonal, being greatest in spring and autumn and effectively ceasing in winter. Females began to grow faster than males during their first autumn of life. The respective mean lengths of males and females were 70 and 75 mm at the end of the first year and 90 and 100 mm at the end of the second year. The largest fish caught was a III + female measuring 163 mm and weighing 32.0 g. The respective von Bertalanffy growth curve parameters for L, K and t0 were 109, 0.758 and - 0.338 for males, and 124, 0.762 and - 0.223 for females. Although the diet of G. occidentalis was always dominated by small terrestrial fauna, and particularly insects, conspicuous seasonal differences were found between the more important of the other components. Data on body size, growth and diet of G. occidentalis are compared with those recorded for other galaxiids.  相似文献

We report the first use of exemestane (EM), a steroidal aromatase inhibitor (AI) commercially known as aromasin, in studies of sex differentiation in fish. The effectiveness of EM was examined in two different age groups of the gonochoristic fish, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Untreated control fish (all female) showed normal ovarian differentiation through 120 days after hatching (dah), whereas fish treated with EM at 1000 and 2000 µg/g of feed from 9 dah through 35 dah, the critical period for sex differentiation, exhibited complete testicular differentiation; all stages of spermatogenic germ cells were evident and well developed efferent ducts were present. Fish treated with EM at 1000 µg/g of feed from 70 dah through 100 dah significantly suppressed plasma estradiol-17β level and increased level of 11-ketotestosterone. Furthermore, untreated control fish showed strong gonadal expression of the steroidogenic enzymes P450 cholesterol-side chain-cleavage enzyme (P450scc), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD), and cytochrome P450 aromatase (P450arom). In contrast, EM-treated fish showed immunopositive reactions against P450scc and 3β-HSD but not against P450arom in interstitial Leydig cells. These results indicate that treatment of tilapia juveniles with EM during sex differentiation leads to the development of testes, apparently by a complete suppression of aromatase activity.  相似文献

Lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens are imperiled throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes basin. Efforts to restore this species to former population levels have been ineffective due in part to limited information regarding its early life history. The objectives of this study were to characterize the larval drift and biological attributes of age‐0 lake sturgeon in the lower Peshtigo River, Wisconsin. Lake sturgeon larvae were captured from May to June 2002 and 2003 using drift nets, while age‐0 juveniles were captured from June through October 2002 and 2003 using wading, snorkeling, backpack electrofishing, and haul‐seine surveys. Larval drift occurred within 14 days of adult spawning and extended from 1 to 3 weeks in duration, with two peaks in the number of fish drifting downstream each year. Larvae had a median total length (TL) of 19 mm (range: 13–23; N = 159) in 2002 and 18 mm (range: 13–24; N = 652) in 2003. Catch‐per‐unit‐effort for larvae was 0.18 fish h?1 m2 and 0.94 fish h?1 m2 in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Age‐0 juvenile lake sturgeon exhibited rapid growth (i.e. 2.57 mm day?1 in TL and 0.66 g day?1 in wet weight) throughout summer and fall months; relative condition of fish in both years was approximately 100, indicating good condition. Absolute abundance of age‐0 juveniles in 2003 was estimated at 261 fish using the Schnabel estimator. The results from this study indicate that the lower Peshtigo River contains important nursery habitats suitable for age‐0 lake sturgeon.  相似文献

Synopsis Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine changes in behavior of red hake,Urophycis chuss, under decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO). Since the ecological requirements of this species change with age, responses were measured for three different groups: (1) age 0+, = 89 mm total length (TL); (2) age 1+, = 238 mm TL; and (3) age 2–3+, = 397 mm TL. As DO decreased from 8–10 mg l-1 to < 0.5 mg l-1, changes were evident in active time, water column activity, range of horizontal movement, food searching, and agonistic behavior. Age 0+ fish were most sensitive, moving up into the water column and swimming continuously as DO levels fell below 4.2 mg l-1. Age 2–3+ fish were the least responsive, remaining on the substrate and increasing only their range of movement at concentrations below 3 mg l-1. Responses of age 1 + fish were variable, possibly reflecting a transition stage between the younger and older fish. Common to all groups was the decrease and eventual cessation of food searching.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of the R. lemmingii population of the River Huebra, Duero basin are analysed. Females dominated older age classes and lived up to 6 years (5+) while males only reached 5 years (4+). The growing season extended from April to September; growth rates were similar for both sexes. 0+ fish condition increased during their first summer and spring. In older fish, condition cycle was related to gonad development and showed some differences between sexes. The number of females reaching maturity at age 1 + almost doubled that of males; females also matured at smaller size. Both fecundity and egg size increased with female length: mean egg counts varied between 974 for 1 + individuals and an estimated 10491 for 5+ fish. Eggs were produced as a single batch, but were released fractionally during April and May.  相似文献

The age and growth of North Pacific albacore Thunnus alalunga were investigated using obliquely sectioned sagittal otoliths from samples of 126 females and 148 males. Otolith edge analysis indicated that the identified annulus in a sagittal otolith is primarily formed during the period from September to February. The assessments of the fish age at first annulus formation indicated that the first annulus represents an age of <1 year. This study presents an age estimate (0·75 years) for the formation of the first annulus. The oldest fish ages observed in this study were 10 years for females and 14 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of females estimated were L(∞) = 103·5 cm in fork length (L(F) ), K = 0·340 year(-1) and t(0) = -0·53 years, and the parameters of males were L(∞) = 114·0 cm, K = 0·253 year(-1) and t(0) = -1·01 years. Sexual size dimorphism between males and females seemed to occur after reaching sexual maturity. The coefficients of the power function for expressing the L(F) -mass relationship obtained from sex-pooled data were a = 2·964 × 10(-5) and b = 2·928.  相似文献
