Lake Victoria has long been advanced as an example of a lake in which the physical limnological changes have proceeded side by side with biological changes. The paper summarizes recent geological findings and indicates the necessity of revising assumptions made in the biological literature concerning the geological evolution of the lake. It is argued that the revised geological history provides a simple explanation of the main features of the lake ichthyofauna. It is also consistent with the known biological changes.
A mid-Pleistocene inception is postulated for the lake; it was formed as a shallow basin resulting from cross-warping of a well-developed westward-flowing plateau drainage. In its early stages, as the pre-lake rivers were ponded-up, several separate dendritic, swampy lakes must have existed. These gradually became interconnected, lost their outlet to the west and were drained northwards by the Nile. Subsequent fluctuations in level have been generally negative and have resulted from incision of the lake outflow not climatic change.  相似文献

Glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is a serious hazard in high, mountainous regions. In the Himalayas, catastrophic risks of GLOFs have increased in recent years because most Himalayan glaciers have experienced remarkable downwasting under a warming climate. However, current knowledge about the distribution and recent changes in glacial lakes within the central Himalaya mountain range is still limited. Here, we conducted a systematic investigation of the glacial lakes within the entire central Himalaya range by using an object-oriented image processing method based on the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) or Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) images from 1990 to 2010. We extracted the lake boundaries for four time points (1990, 2000, 2005 and 2010) and used a time series inspection method combined with a consistent spatial resolution of Landsat images that consistently revealed lake expansion. Our results show that the glacial lakes expanded rapidly by 17.11% from 1990 to 2010. The pre-existing, larger glacial lakes, rather than the newly formed lakes, contributed most to the areal expansion. The greatest expansions occurred at the altitudinal zones between 4800 m and 5600 m at the north side of the main Himalayan range and between 4500 m and 5600 m at the south side, respectively. Based on the expansion rate, area and type of glacial lakes, we identified 67 rapidly expanding glacial lakes in the central Himalayan region that need to be closely monitored in the future. The warming and increasing amounts of light-absorbing constituents of snow and ice could have accelerated the melting that directly affected the glacial lake expansion. Across the main central Himalayas, glacial lakes at the north side show more remarkable expansion than those at the south side. An effective monitoring and warning system for critical glacial lakes is urgently needed.  相似文献

Lake Malawi is one of the African Great Lakes and is well known for its fish biodiversity which is the greatest in the world for freshwaters. The lake basin is a valuable resource to the riparian countries. Activities associated with the derivation of the values offered by the lake basin, however, result in the generation of wastes and pollutants that also impact on the lake basin. Such anthropogenic activities within the lake basin place considerable strain on the lake system and may lead to the degradation of the lake basin. Proper application of technology can effectively supplement command-and-control measures and economic instruments for better lake basin management. Currently, no comprehensive framework exists to assess the management of the lake basin. Such a framework is necessary to guide managers and policy-makers in the formulation of management plans and strategies for the sustainable management and utilization of the lake basin. We propose an indicator framework for assessing the technology aspect of Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM) in the context of the Lake Malawi Basin. We further demonstrate applicability of the proposed framework through a study conducted in the Malawian side of the basin. We applied a five point Likert-type scale in our indicator assessment. Overall, our results show that the technology aspect of the management of the lake basin is weak to moderate. This threatens the sustainability of the lake especially in the areas of solid waste management, sanitation services, pollution control and protection of wetlands and lagoons which performed from very low to moderate. The major challenges are weak institutional capacity, weak regulation enforcement, and insufficient resources.  相似文献

太湖湖滨带生态系统健康评价   总被引:20,自引:4,他引:16  
根据湖滨带生态系统的特点,运用综合健康指数法建立了湖滨带生态系统健康评价体系,由目标层、准则层、指标层构成,其中准则层由湖滨带水质状况、底泥状况、植被状况、其它生物状况(浮游动物、浮游植物、底栖动物)、岸带物理状况5项组成,指标层由总氮、总磷、溶解氧、挺水植物覆盖率等15项指标构成。采用专家打分法、熵值法分别确定了准则层、指标层的权重系数。对太湖湖滨带33个点位进行了采样分析,并进行无量纲化处理后应用到所建立的评价体系中。评价结果显示33个点位中为"很健康"、"健康"、"亚健康"、"疾病"、"严重疾病"的分别占0%、24.2%、21.2%、51.5%及3.0%,也即超过一半的点位处于"疾病"状态。只有东太湖刚刚超过"健康"分数的下限,东部沿岸、贡湖、南部沿岸均处于"亚健康"状态,而梅梁湾、竺山湾、西部沿岸属于"疾病"状态,且竺山湾的生态健康状态最差。该评价结果与太湖湖滨带各分区的实际调查情况相符合,评价方法可靠性、可行性较强,可为其它湖泊湖滨带的生态系统健康评价提供一定的参照。  相似文献

The wind field over a lake surface is the key element in driving the exchange of momentum and energy at the free surface. It is rarely uniform, having a considerable degree of spatial variability, both on a synoptic and a local scale. Topographic features are one of the most common contributors to this variability. The aerodynamic effects of topography on the windfield, and its influence on the circulation patterns and interbasin exchange rates in a large multi-basin lake are documented. The complex landscape that surrounds this lake is dominated by the presence of a mountain peak rising over 900m above the lake level. The circulation patterns in those basins of the lake located in the leeward side of the mountain reflect the spatial patterns of the wind field generated by the surrounding topography. The spatial variations in the wind field are shown to significantly alter the residence times of each basin and the exchange rates between basins, isolating one from the other two basins of the lake. The inter-basin exchange rates determined with wind field variability are consistent with annual contaminant loadings estimated for each of the three basins, which suggests a close link between chemical and hydrodynamic behavior.  相似文献

Water quality and general regularities that have taken place in the water quality of rivers in the drainage basin of Lake Peipsi have been studied. The lake is located in the basin of the Narva River. Several changes of the water quality of the lake in 1970–1990, caused by increasing human impact, have been observed. The water quality of Lake Peipsi depends on its pollution load whereby the main part of the pollution reaches the lake via rivers. In 1985–1989 an extensive research programme of the lake and its drainage basin was carried out. In this paper a part of these results as well as recent changes in the water quality of the rivers of the Estonian side are studied. In the last years an improvement of the general state of rivers in the drainage basin of Lake Peipsi has taken place; the content of organic substances and nutrients in the inflows of Lake Peipsi and in the Narva River (lake outflow) is decreasing.  相似文献

Analyses of trace metals on multiple sediment cores from the whole-lake basin of Lochnagar, Scotland, show that the depth of departure from stable values towards a rapid increase of the Pb/Ti and Hg concentration profiles provides a good dating feature for the 1860s. In relatively shallow areas of the lake, inferred sediment accumulation rates and the trace metal inventories change with water depth, but in the deep water area, sediment accumulation rates are lower than in most other areas of the lake. Mercury, Pb, Cu and Zn inventories in the sediments accumulated since 1860 in the deepest area are 61%, 64%, 73% and 56% of the corresponding average inventories for the whole sediment area of the lake, respectively. This is mainly due to low sediment accumulation in the deep basin. This finding differs from the expected sediment focusing pattern and makes quantitative interpretations of palaeolimnological features using sediments from the deep area of this lake difficult. The influence of sediment focusing from the north-eastern side, the largest portion of the sediment area of the lake basin, on the deepest area of the lake may be limited, so the sediments in the north-east could be difficult to be transported to the deepest area through sediment focusing. Therefore, the sediments in the deepest area of the lake may not represent the whole-lake basin well for the relative abundances of different types of fossils.  相似文献

Water quality and mollusc communities have been declining in Lake Winnipeg., the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world. Ninety sites were surveyed in the southern half of the lake. Nitrate and total dissolved solids were found to be significantly higher on the west side, while cadmium, copper and lead were higher on the east side. Agriculture, urban effluent, and recreational development were major factors directly affecting nearshore water quality. Human impacts were sporadically aggravated by Red River floodwaters entering the lake. A total of 26 gastropod were currently found in the lake, but 16 of them were found at 5 or fewer sites. Only 6 unionid species were found, compared to at least 11 historical species records. Species richness of both gastropods and unionids was positively correlated with total dissolved solids, and inversely with lead. Gastropod and unionid species richness were also mutually positively correlated. Catchment basin and shoreline management policies affecting Lake Winnipeg need to be reexamined to reduce further habitat decline.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to determine if spatial differences existed between zooplankton, larval yellow perch Perca flavescens and bluegill Lepomis macrochirus (<13 mm total length, L(T)) in Pelican Lake (332 ha), NE, U.S.A. It was hypothesized that wind could act as a transport mechanism for larval fishes in this shallow lake, because strong winds are common at this geographic location. Potential spatial differences were explored, relating to zooplankton densities, size structure and densities of larval P. flavescens and L. macrochirus. Density differences (east v. west side of the lake) were detected for small- (two occasions), medium- (two occasions) and large-sized (one occasion) L. macrochirus larvae. No density differences were detected for small P. flavescens larvae; however, densities of medium- and large-sized P. flavescens were each higher on the west side of the lake on two occasions. There was no evidence that larval P. flavescens and L. macrochirus distributions were related to wind because they were not associated with large wind events. Likewise, large wind event days did not result in any detectable spatial differences of larval P. flavescens and L. macrochirus densities. There appeared to be no spatial mismatch between larval densities and associated prey in the years examined. Thus, wind was not apparently an influential mechanism for zooplankton and larval P. flavescens and L. macrochirus transport within Pelican Lake, and spatial differences in density may instead be related to vegetation and habitat complexities or spawning locations within this shallow lake.  相似文献

We investigated the range expansion histories of Machilus thunbergii populations in the Kinki region of central Japan on the basis of nuclear microsatellite data. In the Kinki region, M. thunbergii is typically found in the coastal area, with some fragmented populations inland, around Lake Biwa. Phylogenetic and Bayesian clustering analysis (STRUCTURE analysis) revealed that the inland populations have different genetic components between the west and east sides of Lake Biwa. The population located on the north side of the lake has an admixture of the two genetically differentiated lineages, contributing to an increase in the genetic diversity of the population. Populations around Lake Biwa had lost rare alleles and the F value obtained from STRUCTURE analysis was lower in the coastal populations than in the lake populations. These results suggest that populations around Lake Biwa experienced a bottleneck due to a founder effect during the initial migration to the lake and that glacial refugia of M. thunbergii in the Kinki region existed along the coast.  相似文献

Owing to the high altitude of Øvre Heimdalen and the complex topography within the valley, climatic conditions are complicated. The valley is situated in a mountain region with a subarctic or tundra macroclimate, which exists over the lake itself and on the SSW-valley side. However, the favourable combination of slope angle and exposure of the NNE-valley side gives a radiation or continental type of local climate on this side.
The large net input of radiant energy onto the NNE-valley side during the summer results in higher air temperatures, greater precipitation and higher air humidity than elsewhere in the valley. This is clearly reflected in the luxuriant vegetation on this side. Thus, the climate of the Øvre Heimdalsvatn area is strongly influenced by terrain irregularities and shows how fundamentally different growth possibilities due to local climates may be over short distances in the uppermost valleys on the eastern side of the central mountain chain.  相似文献

Field observations of air and surface temperatures, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind were performed in the daytime hours of the warm season around a pond of 4 ha, located in Begin Park, in the city of Tel Aviv, Israel. Observations were carried out at screened meteorological stations on four randomly selected days, all associated with moderate heat stress. Two of them, one representing a warm and dry day, and other, representing a sultry day, are analyzed in detail. At the downwind side of the pond, lower temperatures, a higher relative humidity and a lower heat stress index were observed consistently when compared with stations located upwind of the pond. This effect is regarded here as the "lake effect". The fact that no significant change was noted in the water vapor pressure during most of the daytime hours indicates that the lake effect was related mainly to cooling rather than to moisture transport from the pond. A positive relationship was found between the lake effect and wind speed in both types of weather. The maximum effect of the wind's speed on the lake effect was observed at midday, at which time the temperature drop reached 1.6 degrees C, while the relative humidity rose by 6%. As a result, the heat stress index dropped by 0.8-1.1 degrees C. It is suggested that the temperature drop induced by the pond during the warmest hours of the day was mainly the result of a truncation of the sensible heat flux from the underlying surface when the air, which had previously passed over hot surfaces, swept over the relatively cool water. During the late afternoon and evening hours, when the water became warmer than the surrounding surfaces, latent heat cooling resulting from evaporation became the dominant source of the lake effect, and the lake effect resulted in increasing heat stress. It is concluded that even small bodies of water have a relieving effect on humans in the daytime hours, within the range of 40 m, under both dry and humid hot weather conditions.  相似文献

New occurrences of early artefacts ascribed to the Oldowan tradition come from localities at high level within the caldera of the extinct Kilombe volcano, located in the central rift valley of Kenya. The trachyte cone and caldera of Kilombe volcano formed at ca. 2.5 Ma, and the record of >130 m of sediment-fill indicates that the caldera subsequently held a lake for long periods during the Early Pleistocene. The Oldowan artefact localities, dated by 40Ar/39Ar and palaeomagnetism to ~1.78 Ma, lie east of the centre of the caldera, on the west side of an ancient small lake, which later drained away as a gorge formed on the east side of the mountain. The artefacts are dominantly made of Kilombe trachyte, and are associated with a fauna of large animals including Hippopotamus gorgops. These are the first Oldowan localities to be discovered in a new area of the Kenyan rift valley in the last thirty years, and their presence at high level in rugged landscape indicates that the associated hominins were exploiting a full range of environments.  相似文献

Parasitic infections may cause alterations in host life history, including changes in reproductive investment (absolute amount of energy allocated to reproduction) and reproductive effort (proportion of available energy allocated to reproduction). Such changes in host life history may reflect: 1) a parasite tactic: the parasite adaptively manipulates energy flow within the host so that the host is induced to make a reduction in reproductive effort and reproductive investment, making more energy available to the parasite; 2) no tactic: there is no change in host reproductive effort and reproductive investment simply decreases as a side effect of the parasite depleting host energy stores; 3) a host tactic: the host adaptively increases reproductive effort in the face of infection and loss of body condition, reproductive investment possibly being reduced despite the increased reproductive effort. Females in Alaskan lake populations of threespine sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) are capable of clutch production when parasitized by the cestode Schistocephalus solidus despite large relative parasite masses. We analyzed the somatic energy reserves, maturation stage and ovarian mass of female sticklebacks collected from an Alaska lake during a single reproductive season. We found that parasitized females were less likely to carry fully-matured gametes, had smaller ovarian masses, and had lower somatic energy stores than unparasitized females. The relationship between reproductive investment and energy storage did not differ between parasitized and unparasitized females. Thus, reproductive effort did not change in response to parasitic infection. We conclude there was no indication of either a parasite tactic or a host tactic. Simple nutrient theft is involved in the parasite's influence on host reproduction, consistent with an earlier hypothesis that reproductive curtailment in threespine sticklebacks is a side effect.  相似文献

The acute effects on perch and long‐term effects on whitefish were studied after liming one side of a lake [initial pH: 4.6–5.5; aluminium (Al): 29–54 μg L?1; Ca2+: 0.02–0.07 mmol L?1] that was divided into two parts with a plastic curtain. Some Al precipitation was observed on the gill surface of perch 1 day after liming; the concentration of plasma sodium of perch females in the limed side was also higher than in the acidic side. Nearly 6 months after liming, at the spawning time of whitefish, the plasma chloride concentration of whitefish in the limed side was higher and blood glucose concentration lower than in the acidic side. Four of five whitefish males from the limed side, but only one of five males and none of the five females from the acidic side, were ready to spawn. The growth of whitefish in the limed side was also more rapid. These changes illustrate that liming had no acute harmful effects on perch, and allowed whitefish to recover from acidity‐related physiological stress.  相似文献

We studied the factors causing spatial and temporal patterning of interstitial water chemistry in Crystal Bog, a 7 ha northern Wisconsin kettle-hole peatland. Over the course of the snow-free season Crystal Bog exhibited spatial and temporal patterns in chemistry, especially hydrogen-ion, dissolved organic carbon, and specific conductance. The peatland contains a 0.5 ha pond that has water more dilute than the interstitial water of the surrounding peatland. The direction of groundwater flow between the lake and the peatland was seasonally dependent. In the spring and early summer, flow was from the lake into the peatland, especially on the eastern side of the lake. This flow resulted in a plume of relatively dilute surface interstitial water in the peatland. In mid and late summer direction of groundwater flow was from the peatland into the lake and the dilute plume was reduced in areal extent. By fall the direction of water flow was again from the lake to the peatland.The spatial and temporal heterogeneity in water chemistry produced by the seasonal variation in the direction of horizontal water flow was substantial. Minimum and maximum observed concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the interstitial water of the peatland, for example, differed by more than a factor of three, and pH ranged between 3.8 and 5.0. Correlations of DOC with anion deficit and hydrogen ion concentration and experiments of photo-oxidation of water samples showed that organic acids were the primary cause of acidity in the peatland. Specific conductance was highly correlated with DOC, probably because of DOC's correlation with the very conductive hydrogen ion. In Crystal Bog it was possible to use the relatively simple measure of specific conductance to estimate the temporal and spatial distribution of the more difficult to determine DOC.  相似文献

The Osmunda regalis sporophyte is well organized for the storage and perpetuation of post-zygotic mutations. Techniques have been developed to detect sporophytes in which such mutations have occurred. Two populations were screened for sporophytes which are chimeras for gametophytic or recessive sporophytic lethals. The populations had different ecologies; one was in a pristine lake side bog and the other was growing in the waters of a river heavily polluted with industrial wastes. Post-zygotic mutations were detected only in the polluted river population. The level of mutational damage approximated that previously documented from chromosome studies.  相似文献

Byglandsfjorden is a lake situated in southern Norway, about 80 km north of Kristiansand. The catchment area consists of archean rocks. The river Otra flows through the lake. Water samples were taken from the lake 4 times during the summer of 1971, and primary production was measured three times. The chemical analyses show an oligotrophic lake. The lake is acid and poor in electrolytes. pH-values vary between 5.3 and 6.0, and the specific conductivity lies at about 10. Primary production is rather high, and per m2 lake surface the values are found to be about the same as in Svinsjøen, a rather eutrophic lake near Oslo. However, an index used by Rodhe (1965) shows that the lake is of a more oligotrophic type.  相似文献

Summary The Grevelingen was fished with a beam-trawl during the years 1960–1963, when in open connection with the North Sea as well as with the river Rhine, during the years 1966–1969, when the connection with the river was blocked by a dyke, and from 1971–1976, when the connection with the sea was also blocked by a dyke and the stagnant, saline Lake Grevelingen was created.The (mainly) demersal fishes captured were classified into (1) frequent species spawning within the area; (2) frequent species spawning outside the area, and (3) incidental visitors from the coastal sea.After closure the incidental visitors either became much less frequent or dropped out entirely. Some of the langer spawners decreased in numbers. Their place was occupied by smaller fishes, such as sand smelts and the stickleback.As piscivorous fishes almost completely dropped out, the above small species were able to increase and so were the two gobies present before the closure. The black goby (Gobius niger) invaded the lake and built a large, propagating population, in a similar way as it had done in Lake Veere, a neighbouring saline lake, created in a similar way. The turbot and the brill increased in numbers and there are indications that both spawn in the lake. These two species are the only large piscivorous fishes left at the moment and the nearly empty niche, created by the absence of other, incidental visiting, marine piscivores, is now filled by numbers of markedly increased grebes and cormorants.The flatfishes, used to spawn at sea, were trapped inside the lake. They grew on, but, as no reproduction was possible and recruitment through the locks in the dyke on the land side was minimal, their population decreased, the more rapidly as many were captured by fishermen.It is concluded that in the stagnant, saline lake, species diversity decreased and food chains became shorter, as compared with the more mature situation in the open estuary.Contribution No. 190 of the Delta Institute for Hydrobiological Research.  相似文献

1. To study the bottom‐up linkages in arctic lakes, we treated one side of a partitioned lake with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus for a 6‐week period each summer for 6 years starting in the summer of 1985. We took a variety of weekly measurements to determine the impact of the nutrient loading on the lake and continued weekly measurements for 2–6 years after the cessation of nutrient loading to observe the recovery of the treated side. The loading rates (2.91 mmol N m?2 day?1 and 0.23 mmol P m?2 day?1) were five times the calculated loading rates for Toolik Lake, located nearby. 2. In all 6 years of nutrient addition, phytoplankton biomass and productivity were greater in the treated sector than the reference sector. In the first 4 years of nutrient addition there was no flux of phosphorus from the mineral‐rich sediments. This changed in the last 2 years of nutrient addition as phosphorus was released to the lake. 3. The response of the animal community to increased plant production was mixed. One of the four macro‐zooplankton species (Daphnia longiremis) increased in number by about twofold in the first 5 years. However, the copepod Cyclops scutifer showed no response during the treatment phase of the study. The benthic invertebrate response was also mixed. After a 2‐year lag time the snail Lymnaea elodes increased in the treated lake sector but chironomids did not. 4. Ecosystem response to fertilisation was not controlled solely by nutrient addition because phosphorus was not recycled from the sediments until the last 2 years of nutrient addition. Phytoplankton still showed the effects of nutrient addition in the recovery period and the hypolimnion of the treated sector was still anaerobic starting at 6 m in 1996.  相似文献
