Intermolt adult crayfishP. clarkii were used for this work. After acclimatation to laboratory conditions crayfish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium, mercury, and lead for 96 h. Gills of control and exposed crayfish were removed and ATPase activity and oxygen uptake rate were determined. Structural damage of gill filaments was also observed. Gill tissue respiration rates were measured for individual crayfish using a Gilson differential respirometer. Lead causes a decrease of gill oxygen uptake, but neither cadmium nor mercury seems to affect it at the concentrations employed. Although all metals studied alter gill filament structure, lead damage is the most apparent. In the same way, significant differences in gill ATPase activity owing to metal exposure were only observed in lead treated crayfish.  相似文献

At least 30 species of nonindigenous freshwater snails have invaded North America. The risk of these snails invading new lakes depends upon their ability to survive overland transport. We first reviewed published laboratory experiments using freshwater snails, which show numerous species are able to tolerate days of air exposure. We then tested tolerance to drying of three species of invasive aquatic snails that are widespread in Wisconsin: Bithynia tentaculata, Cipangopaludina chinensis, and Viviparus georgianus. In a series of seven experiments, we simulated boater transport by placing snails individually in mesh bags, hung outdoors, and confined in a screen tent. The screen roof allowed exposure to both sun and rain, and an on-site weather station recorded temperature, precipitation, and humidity. All three species exhibited high survivorship, with some individuals alive at the end of most experiments: 42 days for B. tentaculata and V. georgianus and 63 days for C. chinensis. Viable young were released by C. chinensis after 54 days of exposure. Overall, our results indicate that these invasive snails should readily survive long periods of transport overland, indicating a need for continued vigilance of recreational boaters entering lakes.  相似文献

In this study, the oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, and filtration rate were monitored in Mytilus edulis in response to administration of the two pesticides, methamidophos and omethoate. Five sublethal concentrations (1, 10, 50, 100, and 200 µgL?1) were administered over 96 h. Oxygen consumption rates increased following administration of all concentrations of methamidophos for 96 h and to the lower concentrations of omethoate (1, 10, and 50 µg L?1) from 6 to 24 h. Over 24 h, oxygen consumption decreased significantly. Ammonia excretion rates were higher than the control after 36 h of exposure to methamidophos, while reduction was observed when M. edulis was exposed to omethoate. The O:N ratios increased when the animals were first exposed to these two pesticides and then decreased at all the concentrations. At the concentrations of 100 and 200 µgL?1, the O:N ratio was below 30 after 72 h. The filtration rate of M. edulis decreased with the increasing concentration of pesticide exposure.  相似文献

We studied the rate of oxygen consumption by the Lymnaea stagnalis embryos. The rate of oxygen consumption increased consistently during embryogenesis. The volume specific rate of oxygen consumption increased initially from the early cleavage stages until the gastrula stage and then decreased gradually to the eclosion of snails. There are three periods in embryogenesis of L. stagnalis, which differ in the coefficients of allometric dependence between the rate of oxygen consumption and volume of embryos: (1) early embryogenesis, when the increase in the rate of oxygen consumption is not accompanied by the growth of volume of the embryos; (2) larval period (trochophore and veliger stages; exponential coefficient k = 0.514), and (3) postlarval period (exponential coefficient k = 0.206).  相似文献

Gypsy mothLymantria dispar L. larvae were exposed toApanteles melanoscelus (Ratzeburg) females contaminated with nuclear polyhedrosis virus. Three methods of contamination (ovipositor, total body surface, and exposure to infected hosts) and two exposure periods (2 and 24 hours) were tested. A significantly greater incidence of larval mortality caused by virus occurred among larvae exposed to contaminated than among larvae exposed to uncontaminated parasites for 2 and 24 hours. No significant differences occurred in larval mortality caused by virus for the 3 methods of contamination for the 2- and 24-hour tests or in parasite emergence from larvae parasitized by contaminated or uncontaminated parasites.  相似文献

Hydroxylamine added to the nutrient medium in sublethal concentrations (0.2 to 1.0 mN) enhanced NADH2 dependent glutamate dehydrogenase activity in isolated pea roots. The increase in activity depended on proteosynthesis and was lower in the presence of NO3 ? and NH4 + ions. Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus, Iquitos) were exposed to a sequence of three stresses: A live snake, ether anesthesia, and physical restraint. Plasma cortisol concentrations were determined both following each stress exposure and before and after the sequence of stresses. Dominant males demonstrated lower unstressed plasma cortisol levels than subordinates. Although the form of the relationship between adrenal activity and social dominance differs for the types of stress, dominant animals always show the greatest adrenal reactivity to stress.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption of Amphibola crenata (Gmelin) was measured in various salinity-temperature combinations (< 0.1‰ to 41‰ salinity and 5 to 30°C) in air, and following exposure to declining oxygen tensions. In all experimental conditions, respiration varied with the 0.44 power of the body weight (sd = 0.14). The aquatic rate was consistently higher than the aerial rate of oxygen consumption, although at 30 °C the two rates were similar. Oxygen consumption increased with temperature up to 25 °C in all salinities; the lowest values were recorded at temperatures below 10 °C and at 30 °C in the most dilute medium. At all exposure temperatures, the oxygen consumption of Amphibola decreased regularly with salinity down to 0.1 ‰, and following exposure to concentrated sea water (41‰). Salinity had the least effect at 15 °C which was the acclimation temperature. In general, all of the temperature coefficients (Q10 values) were low, < 1.65. However, Q10 values above 2.8 were recorded at a salinity of 17.8‰ between 10 and 15 °C. Oxygen consumption of all size classes of Amphibola was more temperature dependent in air than in water and small individuals show a greater difference between their aerial and aquatic rates than larger snails. The rates of oxygen consumption in declining oxygen tensions were expressed as fractions of the rates in air saturated sea water at each experimental salinity-temperature combination. The quadratic coefficient B2 becomes increasingly more negative with both decreasing salinity and temperatures up to 20 °C. At higher temperatures (25 and 30 °C) the response is reversed such that O2 uptake in snails becomes increasingly independent of declining oxygen tensions at higher salinities. On exposure to a salinity of 4‰, Amphibola showed no systematic response to declining oxygen tension with respect to temperature. The ability of Amphibola to maintain its rate of oxygen consumption in a wide range of environmental conditions is discussed in relation to its potential for invading terrestrial habitats and its widespread distribution on New Zealand's intertidal mudflats.  相似文献

The routine oxygen consumption of redbreast tilapia, Tilapia rendalli exposed to silt from the Phalaborwa Barrage was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Exposure of adult fish to sublethal concentrations of silt did alter routine oxygen consumption by causing increased rates (53–77% from initial) of oxygen consumption. This indicates that sublethal levels of suspended silt concentrations results in an increase in oxygen consumption by the fish due to an increase in metabolic rate associated with increased activity and stress. From the laboratory experiments, it can therefore be predicted that sublethal releases from the Phalaborwa Barrage will stress the resident fish populations. However, the extent of the impact on the fish population will depend on factors such as frequency, duration and severity of exposure as well as the species in question. Long term monitoring of the fish population below the Phalaborwa Barrage is therefore essential.  相似文献

In this study, the toxic effect of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) at the physiological and molecular level was investigated in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) plants. The seedlings were grown in half strength Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with different concentrations of CuONPs (0, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg l?1) for 21 days under controlled growth conditions. Exposure to 200 and 500 mg l?1 of CuONPs significantly reduced shoot length and biomass. Significant reduction in root length and biomass was observed upon exposure to all concentrations of CuONPs. Retardation of primary and lateral root growth was observed upon exposure to different concentrations of CuONPs. At 100, 200 and 500 mg l?1 of CuONPs exposure, the total chlorophyll contents reduced significantly. Exposure to different concentrations of CuONPs has not resulted in any significant change in carotenoid contents. The proline content significantly increased upon exposure to 100, 200 and 500 mg l?1 of CuONPs. Significant increase in hydrogen peroxide content and lipid peroxidation was observed in roots upon exposure to 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg l?1 of CuONPs. Histochemical staining with nitroblue tetrazolium and treatment with 3′-(p-hydroxyphenyl) fluorescein indicated a concentration-dependent increase in reactive oxygen species generation in roots. Exposure to CuONPs has resulted in excess lignification of roots cells as revealed by phloroglucionol-HCl staining. Gene expression analysis using real-time polymerase chain reaction showed modulations in the expression of CuZn superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase genes in roots of CuONPs exposed plants.  相似文献

Urban land use has increased dramatically over the past few decades, resulting in high variability in nutrients loading which is likely to alter the biological component of urban streams. Freshwater snails and environmental variables that might structure their diversity and distribution were studied from September 2012 to September 2013 in three contiguous watersheds in Douala. Twelve stations were monitored monthly, two of these are located in a suburban forest area, and the rest situated in urbanized and industrialized zones. Snails were collected using a long-handled net (30 × 30 cm side, 400-µm mesh). Meanwhile, measurements of the environmental variables were taken. Ten species were recorded which are as follows: Melanoides tuberculata (Thiaridae); Gabbiella africana (Bythiniidae); Physa acuta, Aplexa sp. (Physidae); Lymnaea natalensis, Lymnaea stagnalis, Lymnaea columella (Lymnaeidae); Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus forskalii (Planorbidae) and one undetermined taxon of Bythiniidae. All these snails were identified at nine of the ten urban stations; no species being found in suburban stations. These urban streams have very poor health status with highly polluted waters. Among the species found P. acuta (76.95 %), L. natalensis (19.46 %) and M. tuberculata (2.79 %) were the most abundant. Multiple stepwise regression analysis, Spearman correlation test and redundancy analysis showed that snail occurrences and abundances were probably influenced by water temperature, conductivity, suspended solids, alkalinity, nitrites, nitrates, ammonium, phosphates, oxydability, biochemical oxygen demand, rainfall, encumbrance rate of the riverbed and water width. Moreover, snail dynamics showed a seasonal pattern with peak population abundances and recruitment of young generations during rainy season. This malacological survey spotlighted the impacts of anthropogenic activities on snail’s diversity and distribution, with the proliferation of the invasive pulmonate P. acuta in Douala urban streams.  相似文献

  1. From May to December 1971 at six sites in upstate New York, samples of freshwater Aufwuchs (the largely algal “scum” flora) were collected on sets of exposed microscope slides. Successive standing crop biomass estimates are presented as analyses of total organic carbon (by wet oxidation) and total nitrogen (by micro-Dumas). Nutritional quality of the Aufwuchs can be assessed in carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratios, and these are correlated with substantive data from concurrent studies on the growth and fecundity of second trophic level snails (Laevapex and Lymnaea).
  2. Peak values of carbon biomass for the six sites range from 1.1 mgC/dm2 to 4.2 mgC/dm2, and mean C:N ratios ranged from 3.7:1 to 10.1:1 (corresponding to 29% protein). Higher snail growth rates (computed as increase in mgC/100 snails/30 days) and greater fecundities correlate, beyond certain minimal levels of carbon biomass, to lower C:N ratios in the corresponding Aufwuchs samples.
  3. In discussing these nutritional aspects of Aufwuchs production, it is emphasized that freshwater macrophytes have C:N ratios well above 17:1, and are not much fed upon. In smaller bodies of fresh water, the most important sector of primary production is that of the Aufwuchs, and its nutritional quality in terms of lower C:N ratios is of unique significance to the bioenergetics of the second trophic level invertebrates.

This work analyzes the effects of radiofrequency-electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure on the reproductive system of male rats, assessed by measuring circulating levels of FSH, LH, inhibin B, activin B, prolactin, and testosterone. Twenty adult male Sprague–Dawley rats (180?±?10 g) were exposed to 900 MHz RF-EMF in four equal separated groups. The duration of exposure was 1, 2, and 4 h/day over a period of 30 days and sham-exposed animals were kept under the same environmental conditions as the exposed group except with no RF-EMF exposure. Before the exposure, at 15 and 30 days of exposure, determination of the abovementioned hormone levels was performed using ELISA. Background: Accumulation of evidence about the epigenetic regulation of genome function suggests the necessity to explore new aspects of the genotoxic action of radiation on the human body. Methodology: A methylation-sensitive PCR assay was used to analyze promoter methylation of p16/CDKN2A, p14/ARF, RASSF1A and GSTP1 genes in blood leukocytes from 103 unirradiated volunteers and 104 irradiated subjects (83 Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant liquidators and 21 nuclear specialists). Additionally, 21 families whose fathers were nuclear specialists were examined. Results: A significantly elevated frequency of individuals with abnormal methylation of p16/CDKN2A and GSTP1 genes was revealed in the exposed group compared to the control group (p = 0.0097 and p = 0.005, respectively). The occurrence of promoter methylation of RASSF1A gene significantly correlated with aging both in the control group (r = 0, 213; p = 0.006) and in the exposed individuals (r = 0, 212; p = 0,031). No methylated genes were found in the offspring of control families. Conclusion: Our study showed for the fist time that prolonged radiation exposure at low and medium doses is associated with hypermethylation of genes involved in the basic protective functions of cells; an effect that is persistent in blood leukocytes for significant periods after irradiation.  相似文献

The influence of water velocities of less than 30 cm/s on drifting of Bulinus globosus in a natural stream was investigated. It is shown that although a low water velocity does not sweep away adhering snails, it carries away snails releasing their hold and crawling along the water surface in search of new food sources. A low water velocity therefore assists considerably to the spreading of a snail species. Vegetation was found to have a decisive impact on local water velocity conditions by reducing the current and creating protected pockets. Upstream migration was found not to be common among Bulinus globosus. In addition, evidence for snail drifting under natural conditions within well established Schistosoma haematobium transmission sites is presented.  相似文献
