Complexity,cross talk and integration of plant MAP kinase signalling   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) link information transfer from external stimuli-activated sensors to cellular responses. The completed Arabidopsis genome sequence revealed an extraordinary complexity in MAPK-signalling components in plants. Information obtained from Arabidopsis provides a framework for a unified nomenclature and the assembly and function of MAPK-signalling pathways. Strategies and tools are evolving to connect MAPK pathways and to determine their function. As a result, MAPK signalling modules emerged, one of which appears to antagonistically regulate stress- and growth-responses and another that regulates cytokinesis.  相似文献

Shoot branching is a highly plastic developmental process in which axillary buds are formed in the axil of each leaf and may subsequently be activated to give branches. Three classes of plant hormones, auxins, cytokinins and strigolactones (or strigolactone derivatives) are central to the control of bud activation. These hormones move throughout the plant forming a network of systemic signals. The past decade brought great progress in understanding the mechanisms of shoot branching control. Biological and computational studies have led to the proposal of two models, the auxin transport canalization-based model and the second messenger model, which provide mechanistic explanations for apical dominance.  相似文献

Sexual ornaments often consist of several components produced by distinct developmental processes. The complexity of sexual ornaments might be favoured by mate choice of individual components in different environments which ultimately results in weak interrelationships (integration) among the developmental processes that produce these components. At the same time, sexual selection for greater exaggeration of individual components favours their stronger co-dependence on organismal resources. This should ultimately produce stronger condition-mediated integration among ornaments' components in individuals with the most exaggerated ornamentation. Here we distinguish between these two sources of integration by examining the relationship between integration and elaboration of sexual ornamentation in three bird species: two with carotenoid-based sexual ornamentation (the house finch, Carpodacus mexicanus and common redpoll, Carduelis flammea) and a species with melanin-based sexual ornamentation (house sparrow, Passer domesticus). We found that integration of components varied with elaboration of carotenoid-based ornamentation but not of melanin ornamentation. In the house finches, integration was the highest in individuals with small ornaments and decreased with ornament elaboration whereas the pattern was the opposite in common redpolls. These results suggest that in these species integration and complexity of carotenoid-based ornamental components are due to shared condition-dependence of distinct developmental pathways, whereas integration and complexity of the melanin ornamentation is due to organismal integration of developmental pathways and is largely condition- and environment-invariant. Thus, functionally, ornamentation of the house sparrows can be considered a single trait, whereas complexity of the house finch and redpoll ornamentation varies with ornament elaboration and individual condition.  相似文献

Pseudomonas putida DOT-T1E, known for its high tolerance to solvents, possesses three Resistance–Nodulation–Cell Division-type (RND) efflux pumps, namely TtgABC, TtgDEF and TtgGHI, which are involved in the active extrusion of solvents. Expression of the ttgABC and ttgGHI operons was previously shown to be regulated by the adjacently encoded repressors, TtgR and TtgV, respectively. Upstream of the third RND operon, ttgDEF , is located a putative regulator gene, ttgT . In this study, TtgT is shown to bind to the promoter region of the ttgDEF operon, and to be released from DNA in the presence of organic solvents. In vitro studies revealed that TtgV and TtgT bind the same operator sites in both the ttgDEF and the ttgGHI promoters. However, the affinity of TtgV for the ttgDEF operator was higher than that of TtgT, which, together with the fact that the ttgV promoter seems to be almost twice stronger than the ttgT promoter, explains why TtgV takes over in the regulation of the two efflux pump operons. The functional replacement of the cognate, chromosomally encoded TtgT by the plasmid-encoded paralogue TtgV illustrates a new mode of efflux pump regulation of which the physiological relevance is discussed.  相似文献

Behavioural and neurophysiological evidence convincingly establish that the left hemisphere is dominant for motor skills that are carried out with either hand or those that require bimanual coordination. As well as this prioritization, we argue that specialized functions of the right hemisphere are also indispensable for the realization of goal-directed behaviour. As such, lateralization of motor function is a dynamic and multifaceted process that emerges across different timescales and is contingent on task- and performer-related determinants.  相似文献

Cognitive control is necessary to flexibly act in changing environments. Sequence processing is needed in language comprehension to build the syntactic structure in sentences. Functional imaging studies suggest that sequence processing engages the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC). In contrast, cognitive control processes additionally recruit bilateral rostral lateral PFC regions. The present study aimed to investigate these two types of processes in one experimental paradigm. Sequence processing was manipulated using two different sequencing rules varying in complexity. Cognitive control was varied with different cue-sets that determined the choice of a sequencing rule. Univariate analyses revealed distinct PFC regions for the two types of processing (i.e. sequence processing: left ventrolateral PFC and cognitive control processing: bilateral dorsolateral and rostral PFC). Moreover, in a common brain network (including left lateral PFC and intraparietal sulcus) no interaction between sequence and cognitive control processing was observed. In contrast, a multivariate pattern analysis revealed an interaction of sequence and cognitive control processing, such that voxels in left lateral PFC and parietal cortex showed different tuning functions for tasks involving different sequencing and cognitive control demands. These results suggest that the difference between the process of rule selection (i.e. cognitive control) and the process of rule-based sequencing (i.e. sequence processing) find their neuronal underpinnings in distinct activation patterns in lateral PFC. Moreover, the combination of rule selection and rule sequencing can shape the response of neurons in lateral PFC and parietal cortex.  相似文献

Epigenetic control of Agrobacterium T-DNA integration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To genetically transform plants, Agrobacterium transfers its T-DNA into the host cell and integrates it into the plant genome, resulting in neoplastic growths. Over the past 2 decades, a great deal has been learned about the molecular mechanism by which Agrobacterium produces T-DNA and transports it into the host nucleus. However, T-DNA integration, which is the limiting, hence, the most critical step of the transformation process, largely remains an enigma. Increasing evidence suggests that Agrobacterium utilizes the host DNA repair machinery to facilitate T-DNA integration. Meanwhile, it is well known that chromatin modifications, including the phosphorylation of histone H2AX, play an important role in DNA repair. Thus, by implication, such epigenetic codes in chromatin may also have a considerable impact on T-DNA integration, although the direct evidence to demonstrate this hypothesis is still lacking. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in our understanding of Agrobacterium T-DNA integration and discuss the potential link between this process and the epigenetic information in the host chromatin. It has been argued that emotion, pain and cognitive control are functionally segregated in distinct subdivisions of the cingulate cortex. However, recent observations encourage a fundamentally different view. Imaging studies demonstrate that negative affect, pain and cognitive control activate an overlapping region of the dorsal cingulate--the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC). Anatomical studies reveal that the aMCC constitutes a hub where information about reinforcers can be linked to motor centres responsible for expressing affect and executing goal-directed behaviour. Computational modelling and other kinds of evidence suggest that this intimacy reflects control processes that are common to all three domains. These observations compel a reconsideration of the dorsal cingulate's contribution to negative affect and pain.  相似文献

The published data and the results of studies of the Department of Human Neurophysiology, revealing the place and importance of ultraslow information-control systems in the study of mechanisms for the integration of interorgan and intersystemic interactions, with the leading role of CNS and the autonomic nervous system, are summarized. The existing notions of the universality and commensurability of amplitude-time parameters, ultraslow bioelectric potentials (USBPs) recorded in the brain and the brain-controlled systems and organs have been considered. Experimental justifications for including one of the USBP types, a stable potential in the millivolt range in the vertex-tenar derivation (the omegametry method) in the psychophysiological approach are provided. This approach consists of choosing complementary integral psychological and physiological parameters permitting the study of the contingency of the mechanisms that control the functional state (wakefulness level) with specific features of the organization of higher mental functions and adaptive behavior, as well as in differentiating diagnostic markers: (a) the balance level and disintegration of intersystemic interaction in the body; and (b) disturbances of compensatory-adaptive possibilities and the adaptation reserve of the body. The prospects of using this approach in theoretical and applied studies on developmental psychophysiology, child psychoneurology, and functional neurology of chronic diseases of the nervous system have been considered.  相似文献

Fis is a small, basic, site-specific DNA-binding protein present in Escherichia coli. A Fis-binding site (F) has been previously identified in the attP recombination site of phage lambda (J. F. Thompson, L. Moitoso de Vargas, C. Koch, R. Kahmann, and A. Landy, Cell 50:901-908, 1987). The present study demonstrates that in the absence of the phage-encoded Xis protein, the binding of Fis to F can stimulate integrative recombination and therefore increase the frequency of lambda lysogeny in vivo. Additionally, Fis exerts a stimulatory effect on both integration and lysogeny that is independent of binding to the attP F site. Maintenance of the lysogenic state also appears to be enhanced in the presence of Fis, as shown by the increased sensitivity of lambda prophages encoding temperature-sensitive repressors to partial thermoinduction in a fis mutant. In the presence of Xis, however, Fis binding to F interferes with integration by stimulating excision, the competing back-reaction. Since Fis stimulates both excision and integration, depending on the presence or absence of Xis, respectively, we conclude that Xis binding to X1 is the key determinant directing the formation of an excisive complex.  相似文献

Although a variety of basic insect behaviours have inspired successful robot implementations, more complex capabilities in these 'simple' animals are often overlooked. By reviewing the general architecture of their nervous systems, we gain insight into how they are able to integrate behaviours, perform pattern recognition, context-dependent learning, and combine many sensory inputs in tasks such as navigation. We review in particular what is known about two specific 'higher' areas in the insect brain, the mushroom bodies and the central complex, and how they are involved in controlling an insect's behaviour. While much of the functional interpretation of this information is still speculative, it nevertheless suggests some promising new approaches to obtaining adaptive behaviour in robots.  相似文献

A model is presented to study and quantify the contribution of all available sensory information to human standing based on optimal estimation theory. In the model, delayed sensory information is integrated in such a way that a best estimate of body orientation is obtained. The model approach agrees with the present theory of the goal of human balance control. The model is not based on purely inverted pendulum body dynamics, but rather on a three-link segment model of a standing human on a movable support base. In addition, the model is non-linear and explicitly addresses the problem of multisensory integration and neural time delays. A predictive element is included in the controller to compensate for time delays, necessary to maintain erect body orientation. Model results of sensory perturbations on total body sway closely resemble experimental results. Despite internal and external perturbations, the controller is able to stabilise the model of an inherently unstable standing human with neural time delays of 100 ms. It is concluded, that the model is capable of studying and quantifying multisensory integration in human stance control. We aim to apply the model in (1) the design and development of prostheses and orthoses and (2) the diagnosis of neurological balance disorders. Treatment of seed with the systemic fungicides triadimenol plus fuberidazole as Baytan significantly decreased powdery mildew in field experiments involving eight oat cultivars differing widely in their resistance to the disease. This was so up to growth stage G.S. 61 (Zadoks) even in a year of high mildew incidence, although the effect diminished after flowering. Significant (P≥ 0.001) interactions between fungicide treatments and cultivars occurred in each of three years at nearly all assessment times. In years of high mildew incidence (1983 and 1984), susceptible cultivars developed similar levels of mildew in seed-treated and untreated plots by about flowering time, although cultivars with adult plant resistance (APR) had significantly less mildew when seed-treated than when left untreated. Later, as the APR was fully expressed and the fungicide effectiveness was declining, similar mildew levels were recorded on treated and untreated plots. Untreated APR cultivars generally had less mildew than treated susceptible cultivars and in a year of late and light mildew, APR alone provided good protection. Seed treatments combined with foliar sprays of tridemorph as Calixin almost completely controlled mildew except on very susceptible cultivars late in the season in high mildew years. Over all cultivars, seed treatment gave yield advantages of 5.3% (1983) and 6.6% (1984) but in 1982, a year of low mildew, the response was small. The possible influence of integrated host resistance and fungicides in stabilising the pathogen population at economically unimportant levels and the environmental benefit of using host resistance to minimise fungicide usage is discussed.  相似文献

The spindle checkpoint ensures that anaphase is not attempted until the sister chromatids of each chromosome are attached to spindle microtubules from opposite poles.
