This study examined foliar nutrient dynamics and nutrient resorption (retranslocation) in three species of Chilean Nothofagus (Fagaceae) that differed in leaf lifespan and elevational distribution. In our central Chile study area the elevations at which these three species are most abundant increase from N. obliqua (deciduous) at low elevations to N. dombeyi at intermediate elevation and N. pumilio (deciduous) at higher elevations up to treeline. We sampled a single stand at 1680 m in which all three species co-occurred. Nothofagus dombeyi leaves were structurally heavier, with specific leaf mass approximately twice that of the two deciduous species. On a concentration basis, foliar N increased in the order N. dombeyi < N. pumilio < N. obliqua and foliar P increased in the order N. dombeyi < N. obliqua < N. pumilio. However, when the differences in specific leaf mass among species were taken into account by calculating N and P content on a leaf area basis, N. dombeyi had the greatest N and P content. N and P remained relatively constant throughout most of the 4-yr N. dombeyi leaf lifespan, then decreased prior to abscission. Nothofagus dombeyi resorbed significantly less N (44-50%) than did the two deciduous species (63-78%), both on proportional and absolute bases. In contrast, N. pumilio and N. dombeyi resorbed similar amounts of P prior to abscission (40-50%), whereas no significant resorption of P from leaves of N. obliqua was noted. We use these results to clarify the relative importance of environmental gradients associated with elevation vs. genetically fixed leaf lifespans in controlling the nutrient dynamics of these congeneric tree species.  相似文献

Rare morphological features of the Leontopithecus cardiovascular system have been reported in the literature. The samples analyzed in this study came from 33 specimens of Leontopithecus from the collection of the Center of Primatology of Rio de Janeiro-FEEMA (CPRJ-FEEMA). Morphometry and stereological data were obtained from all animals. Adult body weights of L. rosalia were the lowest, the greatest being those of L. chrysopygus caissara; body weights of L. chrysomelas and L. c. chrysopygus were similar and in between those of the two former species. Cardiomyocytes (left ventricular myocardium) were bigger in adults than in infants. The myocardium of L. rosalia showed focal fibrosis, fatty vacuoles, and hyalinization. In L. chrysomelas the myocardium showed areas of fibrosis and presence of mononuclear cells. Fibrosis and areas of congestion were observed in L. c. chrysopygus; areas of disorganization and vascular congestion were found in L. c. caissara. In L. rosalia infants, a greater density of vessels per myocardial area and a greater length density of vessels were observed as compared with those of L. chrysomelas. In adults, L. chrysomelas showed greater density of connective tissue in the myocardium than L. c. chrysopygus and L. c. caissara did. In L. rosalia, cardiomyocyte nuclei had a greater area density than those of the other forms of Leontopithecus. These characteristics may explain the faster development of L. rosalia infants as compared with that of L. chrysomelas and L. c. chrysopygus kept under the same handling conditions at the CPRJ-FEEMA.  相似文献

A G-band karyotypic analysis was carried out in individual species groups of three Callitrichid primate genera: Cebuella, Callithrix, and Leontopithecus. Within Callithrix, the karyotypes of the morphologically distinct and geographically isolated morphotypes C. jacchus jacchus and C. jacchus penicillata were identical. Within the lion tamarin genus, Leontopithecus, the karyotypes of the three morphotypes (L. rosalia rosalia, L. rosalia chrysomelas and L. rosalia chrysopygus) were also indistinguishable from one another. These results are consistent with the taxonomic designation of subspecies rank to the different morphotypes. A comparison of type specimens among the three Callitrichid genera showed that their phyletic radiation has been paralleled by a limited number of chromosome rearrangements and a relatively high amount of karyotypic invariance. A fusion/fission event has been postulated to account for the difference in diploid number between Cebuella (2n = 44) and the other species (2n = 46). The karyotype of Callithrix jacchus was found to be more directly derived from Cebuella than was that of Leontopithecus. These findings differ from the previous proposition that Leontopithecus might have diverged from a common Callitrichid ancestor before the emergence of the genus Callithrix.  相似文献

Anesthetized golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia rosalia), a highly endangered species, were examined for ectoparasites by brushing the fur and swabbing the ears. Ectoparasites recovered from the fur included four species of immature ticks (Amblyomma spp.), three species of chiggers (Euschoengastia sp., Microtrombicula brennani and Speleocola tamarina), and one species of follicular mite (Rhyncoptes anastosi). Ectoparasites do not seem to be of particular significance to the health of the golden lion tamarin; this may in part result from grooming.  相似文献

Few morphologic aspects of Leontopithecus are listed in the literature, which does not provide sufficient knowledge of those simians. However, such results are important to evaluate the potential of those species as a model for studying comparative pathology. In this study, the material came from the collection of the Museu de Primatologia do Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro, fixed in 10% formalin pH 7.2. The samples were 33 individuals (five infant and five adult L. rosalia, L. chrysomelas, L. chrysopygus chrysopygus, and three adult L. chrysopygus caissara). The sections of the thoracic aorta were prepared for histological study and measurements were obtained. In the infant Leontopithecus, the aorta presents endothelial line and subendothelial space, the tunica media is not comparatively very thick. In the adults, the aorta showed enlarged tunica intima with consequent thick arterial wall, which increased with the aging process. The atheromatous plates were seen in the aortic wall of all adult L. chrysopygus chrysopygus, in two adult L. rosalia and only one adult L. chrysomelas. Differences in the aortic internal and external diameters were not significant in infants. In the adults, no significant difference was found among L. rosalia, L. chrysomelas and L. c. caissara, although the average of the aortic internal diameter in L. chrysomelas was larger than in L. c. caissara. In infant and adults L. c. chrysopygus, the thickness of the thoracic aorta is larger than in the other forms of Leontopithecus. These findings suggest a morphometric and morphologic aortic difference among the species of Leontopithecus, which could have biological significance that needs major investigation in the future.  相似文献

An analysis was carried out on the length, diameter and number of leaves, and the ratios between these variables for current-year growth units (sibling growth units) derived from different nodes of previous-year growth units (parent growth units) of young Nothofagus dombeyi and Nothofagus pumilio trees. Changes in sibling growth unit length, diameter, and number of leaves with position on the parent growth unit were assessed. In both species, sibling-growth unit morphology varied according to both the axis type of the parent growth unit and the position of the sibling growth unit on its parent growth unit. For the largest parent growth units, the length, diameter and number of leaves of their sibling growth units decreased from distal to proximal positions on the parent growth unit. Distal sibling growth units had a more slender stem and longer internodes than proximal sibling growth units. Sibling growth units in equivalent positions tended to have a more slender stem for N. dombeyi than for N. pumilio. Long main-branch growth units of N. pumilio had longer internodes than those of N. dombeyi; the converse was true for shorter growth units. The growth unit diameter/leaf number ratio was consistently higher for N. pumilio than for N. dombeyi. Nothofagus pumilio axes would go through a faster transition from an 'exploring' morphology to an 'exploiting' morphology than N. dombeyi axes. Within- and between-species variations in growth unit morphology should be considered when assessing the adaptive value of the branching pattern of plants.  相似文献

The influence of the golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) as a seed disperser was studied by monitoring two groups of tamarins from December 1998 to December 2000 (871.9 hours of observations) in a forest fragment in south-east Brazil. The tamarins consumed fruits of 57 species from at least 17 families. They ingested the seeds of 39 species, and 23 of these were put to germinate in the laboratory and/or in the field. L. rosalia is a legitimate seed disperser because the seeds of all species tested germinated after ingestion, albeit some in low percentages. These primates do not show a consistent effect in final seed germination, because they benefit some species while damaging others. Feces were examined for seeds that had been preyed upon or digested.  相似文献

Previous work has shown that karyology may be a valuable technique for discriminating morphologically similar species. In the present study, chromosome number and morphology were described for three strigeid species, Ichthyocotylurus erraticus (Rudolphi, 1809), I. variegatus (Creplin, 1825) and Apatemon gracilis (Rudolphi, 1819). The results show that these species possess the same diploid number of chromosomes (2n = 20) in somatic cells. The relative length and the position of the centromere were determined, and significant inter-specific differences in the karyotypes are demonstrated, enabling the ready discrimination of I. erraticus and I. variegatus cercariae. A review of known karyotypes of the family Strigeidae suggests that possible routes of evolutionary changes involve pericentric inversions within chromosomes rather than Robertsonian translocations between elements.  相似文献

Ormiscodes amphimone (Fabricius) is a phytophagous moth species known to severely defoliate woody species in Chile and Argentina. Here we document new records of O. amphimonehost associations emphasizing the role of Nothofagus pumilio as its primary host in our study area. This new record for Argentina is highly significant given the economic importance of N. pumilio as a timber resource and the potential of O. amphimone to generate extensive outbreaks.  相似文献

The golden lion tamarin Leontopithecus rosalia rosalia, one of the rarest and most endangered of New World primates, has been the focus of an intensive research and conservation effort for two decades. During that period, managed breeding from 44 founders has brought the captive population to over 400 individuals, a number that equals or exceeds the estimated number of free-ranging golden lion tamarins. The extent of genetic variation among golden lion tamarins was estimated with an electrophoretic survey of 47 allozyme loci from 67 captive and 73 free-ranging individuals. The amount of variation was low, compared to 15 other primate species, with 4% of the loci being polymorphic (P), and with an average heterozygosity H estimate of 0.01 in these callitrichids. Electrophoretic analyses of captive and free-ranging animals (N = 31) of two allopatric morphotypes, Leontopithecus rosalia chrysopygus and L. r. chrysomelas, were similar to the L. r. rosalia findings insofar as they also revealed limited genetic polymorphism. Computation of the Nei-genetic distance measurements showed that the three morphotypes were genetically very similar, although discernible differentiation had occurred at two loci. These data are consistent with the occurrence of recent reproductive isolations of these subspecies.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the variability of the primate vomeronasal organ (VNO) may be greater than previously thought, especially among New World monkeys. It is not clear to what extent VNO variation reflects ontogenetic, functional, or phylogenetic differences among primates. The present study investigated VNO anatomy in an ontogenetic series of two genera of callitrichid primates, in order to assess recent attempts to develop VNO character states and to examine the evidence for VNO functionality at different life stages. A sample of six Leontopithecus rosalia, one L. chrysomelas, and six Saguinus geoffroyi was serially sectioned and stained using various methods. Two adult Callithrix jacchus were also sectioned for comparative purposes. The VNO of each primate was examined by light microscopy along its entire rostrocaudal extent. VNOs of the tamarins were described to determine whether they fit into 1 of 3 character states recently attributed to various New World monkeys. At birth, the two species of tamarins differed in the nature of communication between the VNO and nasopalatine duct (NPD). Two of 3 neonatal S. geoffroyi exhibited a fused VNO duct in a more dorsal position (adjacent to the nasal cavity) compared to that of L. rosalia. The VNO duct communicated with the NPD and was patent in neonatal L. rosalia. Both species appeared to have an age-related increase in the amount of sensory epithelium in the VNO. Subadult L. rosalia had caudal regions of the VNO that were exceptionally well-developed, similar to those of strepsirhine primates. Compared to subadults, all adult callitrichids appeared to have more ventral communications of the VNO duct directly into the NPD. Adult S. geoffroyi and L. chrysomelas both had VNO sensory epithelium separated by multiple patches of nonsensory epithelium. This contrasted with the VNOs of C. jacchus, which had a nearly continuous distribution of receptors on all surfaces of the VNO. The findings indicate that tamarins have delayed maturation of the VNO epithelium, and that some species have little or no perinatal function. These results also suggest that ontogenetic changes in craniofacial form may alter the position of the VNO in tamarins. The present study supports the use of at least two character states to categorize the VNO of various callitrichids, but it is suggested that one of these, previously called "reduced sensory epithelium" should be instead termed "interrupted sensory epithelium." The distribution of VNO sensory epithelium does not appear to reflect phylogenetic influences; it is more likely a functional characteristic that varies throughout postnatal life. Therefore, this chemosensory system has a high degree of plasticity relating to age and function, which in some instances can confound the use of characteristics as phylogenetic traits. Further study is needed to quantify VNO receptors in various species to determine if functional differences exist and if some species have more precocious VNO function than others.  相似文献

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed to explore the genomic and species relationships among 17 taxa using Am1 (oligo-Am1) and (GAA)6 oligonucleotide probes. Oligo-Am1 (51 bp) hybridized strongly over almost the entire length of all chromosomes in the C genome. Six translocations between the A and C genomes were found in AACC tetraploids and AACCDD hexaploids, four minor translocations between the C and D genomes were found in AACCDD hexaploids, and two large translocations between the C and D genomes were found in A. sativa. In the 17 Avena species, (GAA)6 regions mainly appear as sharp, thin bands at pericentromeric positions in the A, B, and C genomes and at termini in the B genome. However, no (GAA)6 signal loci were observed in the D genome. The (GAA)6 signal number was constant in both AA and CC diploids, though with different signal intensities. The (GAA)6 signal pattern was diverse in AABB, AACC, and AACCDD polyploids, with each species exhibiting one signal pattern. The (GAA)6 signal number was consistent in diploids and varied in polyploids, describing an intragenomic relationship among Avena species. This study is the first to test these two oligonucleotides, which are based on synthesized repeat units (18–51 bp), in the genus Avena. Our approach paves the way for future studies in which FISH probes can be used to assign other landmark genomic sequence oligonucleotides to physical chromosomes.  相似文献

Wild and cultivated hexaploid oats share the same genomes (AACCDD) and display a considerable level of interspecific variation in both plant and chromosome morphology. The GISH was utilized to detect the interspecific genomic compositions in four hexaploid and two tetraploid oats using total genomic DNA of Avena eriantha (a C-genome diploid) as probe. Intergenomic translocations between A/D and C-genome chromosomes were frequently observed in hexaploid and tetraploid species. In the hexaploid, two pairs of A/D genome segments on C-genome chromosome (A/D-C) translocation and four to six pairs of C-genome segments on A/D genome chromosome (C-A/D) translocation were clearly identified whilst the number of A/D-C translocations was constant among species. In the tetraploid A. maroccana (AACC), a pair of A-C and four pairs of C-A translocations were observed. Moreover, the A/D translocation segments on chromosome 5C was detected only in A. byzantina and A. maroccana, whilst A/D-C translocations were observed on the 1C and 7C of A. sativa, A. fatua and A. sterilis. A. byzantina did however also carry the 1C rearrangement. This result shows that A. byzantina has retained a similar genomic constitution to the tetraploid ancestor of hexaploid oats, A. maroccana. Three pairs of A-C translocations were detected only in A. murphyi (AACC), and two pairs of those were the 1C and 7C as well as the three hexaploid species except A. byzantina.  相似文献

The meiotic synaptic behavior of male mice heterozygous for one of two X-4 translocations was examined to test a recently advanced hypothesis (Ashley, 1988) suggesting that it is possible to predict the synaptic behavior (nonhomologous vs. homologous) and recombinational parameters (suppression vs. nonsuppression of crossing-over) of a chromosome aberration from mitotic G-band breakpoint data. The hypothesis was based on prior observations of synaptic behavior in a series of X-autosome translocations in mice. The breakpoints of the translocation T(X;4)7R1 are both in G-light bands. As predicted by the hypothesis, synapsis was restricted to homology. In contrast, one breakpoint of the translocation T(X;4)8R1 lies in a "stippled" band of the standard diagrams of Nesbitt and Francke (1981). As predicted (Ashley, 1988), "stippled" bands are shown here to synapse nonhomologously, i.e., they behave as "G-dark." The linkage data, as they relate to the synaptic data and the predictions of the hypothesis, are also discussed.  相似文献

Flea, lice, mite, and tick species associated with 510 Rhabdomys pumilio were collected at 9 localities in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The aims of the study were first to quantify the species richness, prevalence, and relative mean intensity of infestation of epifaunistic arthropod species associated with R. pumilio, and second to determine temporal variations in the mean abundance of the parasitic arthropods. Each mouse was examined under a stereoscopic microscope and its parasites were removed, identified, and quantified. The epifaunal population was made up of more than 25,000 individuals and included 8 flea, 1 sucking louse, 11 mite, and 13 ixodid tick species. Female-biased sex ratios were noted for 9 (30%) of the ectoparasite species. Three undescribed mite and 1 undescribed tick species were recovered, and new locality records for 2 flea, the louse, and 2 mite species were documented. A phoretic host association between a nonparasitic mite species, Psylloglyphus uilenbergi kivuensis, and 3 flea species, Chiastopsylla rossi, Hypsophthalmus temporis, and Listropsylla agrippinae, was recorded. The mean abundance of the parasitic mite and insect species were higher during the cold wet season, whereas ticks were more numerous during the warm dry months. The large number of ectoparasite species on R. pumilio, a locally abundant and regionally widespread species, is of medical and veterinary importance particularly in relation to the transmission of pathogens such as Anaplasma marginale, Babesia caballi, and Babesia canis to domestic animals; Rickettsia conori; Yersinia pestis; and the viral disease Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever to humans.  相似文献

An electron microscopy study of synaptonemal complexes in two men carrying reciprocal translocations, a t(19;22) and a t(17;21), is reported. It is shown that a delay in synapsis affects the segments corresponding to the short arms of the acrocentrics involved in the formation of quadrivalents. This appears to provoke an interaction with the sex bivalent which could lead to a failure of spermatogenesis. A study of the literature comparing reciprocal translocations that do and do not involve acrocentrics in sterile and fertile men shows the existence of a significant association between the presence of an acrocentric in the rearrangement and sterility. These results on reciprocal translocations involving at least one acrocentric chromosome correspond to those obtained in cases of Robertsonian translocations.  相似文献

The karotypes of eleven species of the South American burrowing rodents, genus Ctenomys are described, and information on the somatic number of two other species of the same genus is given. The studied species are: C. torquatus (2n =68), C. tuconax (2n =61), C. minutus (2n=50), C. talarum (2n= 48), C. porteousi (2n=48), C. cf. minutus (2n=48), C. australis (2n=46), C. azarae (2n=48), C. latro (2n=42), C. magellanicus fueguinus (2n=36), C. tucumanus (2n=28), C. opimus luteolus (2n=26), and C. occultus (2n =22). This extreme intrageneric variation in somatic number is also reflected by a great amount of diversity in chromosome structure. Karyotypes seem to be rather constant at the species level. Autosomal polymorphism has been found in two of the species, namely C. talarum and C. latro. The hypothesis of the superimposition of Robertsoman rearrangements, pericentric inversions and translocations in the evolution of the karyotype of Ctenomys is advanced. The direction of chromosome change, either toward increase or decrease in chromosome number, is discussed. It is emphasized that high chromosome multiformity is correlated in Ctenomys with a rapid and explosive pattern of species diversification; the meaning of the small size of populations in enhancing the role of chromosome rearrangements in the evolution of Ctenomys is discussed.  相似文献

Western Tennessee contains unusually highly polymorphic populations of southern short-tailed shrews (Blarina carolinensis). We previously documented eight Robertsonian translocations (ROBs) accounting for a variation in diploid number from 46 in most of this species' range to 34-40 in western Tennessee. We have now expanded our study to include data from adjacent areas in Tennessee and Mississippi, 10 localities in all. The new data show a variation in diploid number ranging from 31 to 41, four new ROBs (for a total of 12), and the novel finding of monobrachial translocations in this group. All animals collected from this large area (extending over 12, 000 km(2)) had some level of ROBs, and none represented the 2n = 46 form seen in other parts of the range of this species. Because other species of shrews (genus Sorex) are not affected in the same area, the factors and/or selective forces causing this extensive polymorphism in B. carolinensis must be unique to this species and to this geographic area. Some ROBs were found throughout this large area of over 12,000 km(2). Other translocations (including those with monobrachial homology) were located in one or two localities in this large area, and still other translocations were intermediate in their distribution. There was a concentric pattern to the evolution and presumed spreading of the ROBs. This allowed us to expand the concept of a Robertsonian "fan," introduced by Matthey (1970), to that of concentric evolution of multiple fusion fans: ROBs likely arose independently, separated temporally and geographically, and radiated into surrounding populations to create this complex zone of polymorphism. This is an active process in its infancy, and it is not as mature as that seen in European studies of Mus and Sorex.  相似文献
