Two craneflies, Tipula subnodicornis and Tipula pagana, both undergo diapause in the final larval instar. The species showed differences in the intensity of diapause and in the timing of the photoperiodic reaction during diapause, that could be related to season. Tipula subnodicornis undergoes a winter diapause that is induced and maintained in its early stages by short photoperiod (L:D:6:18). In the laboratory individuals in the early stages of diapause terminated diapause and pupated earlier when they were exposed to daylengths of, or greater than, 12 hr. However, it is suggested that in the field diapause is broken before the natural daylength is long enough to have any accelerating effect on development. Tipula pagana has a summer diapause which is of greater intensity than that of Tipula subnodicornis and some larvae were maintained for 197 days in the laboratory, without pupating, on an 18 hr daylength. Diapause was broken by a L:D;16:8 photoperiod and development was accelerated by a further decrease in daylength. The acceleration in development rate was attended by a decrease in the variance about the mean date of emergence and resulted in a highly synchronised emergence period. It is suggested that this quantitative response to daylength is particularly important to a species that emerges in the autumn when the temperature in the field is falling.  相似文献

All available type material of Tipula stackelbergi Alexander, Tipula usuriensis Alexander and Tipula subpruinosa Mannheims were examined. Tipula (Yamatotipula) stackelbergistat. rev. is elevated from a subspecies of Tipula (Yamatotipula) pruinosa Wiedemann to a valid species. Two new synonyms are proposed: Tipula usuriensissyn. n. proved to be a junior synonym of. Tipula (Yamatotipula) pruinosa and Tipula subpruinosasyn. n. a junior synonym of Tipula (Yamatotipula) freyana Lackschewitz. Tipula (Yamatotipula) stackelbergi is redescribed, male and female terminalia of Tipula (Yamatotipula) pruinosa are illustrated and discussed. Female terminalia of Tipula (Yamatotipula) freyana are described and illustrated for the first time. A key to both sexes of Tipula (Yamatotipula) stackelbergi and Tipula (Yamatotipula) pruinosa, and a key to females of Tipula (Yamatotipula) chonsaniana, Tipula (Yamatotipula) freyana and Tipula (Yamatotipula) moesta are provided. Subspecies are not uncommon among crane flies, but their ranges and traits are poorly known. An interdisciplinary approach (genetics, ecology, taxonomy) is suggested if subspecific ranks are to be used in tipuloid systematics.  相似文献

Summary The cranefly, Tipula subnodicornis, emerges as an adult in the spring and has an annual life-cycle in the British Isles. This is maintained partly through the presence of a winter diapause but the response of development rate to temperature also acts to preserve the timing of the cycle. During development under constant temperature conditions in the laboratory the optimum temperature (taken as the temperature which promoted the most rapid development) dropped from 25°C, or above, in the egg stage to below 20°C in the late larval stages. It is suggested that at the warmer, southern limits of the geographical range rapid early development may be compensated by a retardation in late larval growth. In addition, the response of growth rate to change in temperature was small in the fourth, final, instar and resulted in low Q 10 values; 2.4 between 7° and 10°C, 1.5 between 10° and 15°C and 0.9 between 15° and 20°C. As the fourth instar comprises the greater part of the growth period, this has the effect of minimising the effect of temperature differences which are the result of differences of latitude or altitude. Even at optimum temperatures the growth period was prolonged and larvae in the field do not reach maximum weight, and the photosensitive stage, until late autum when short daylength promotes diapause. Subsequent development in the spring, before pupation and during the pupal period, showed a reversion to the higher Q 10 figures of the early stages in development.The development of final instar Tipula subnodicornis larvae is contrasted with that of Tipula melanoceros. Tipula melanoceros emerges as an adult in September and it is likely that it has an egg diapause. Consequently larval development is confined to a short period between April and late July and growth must be rapid during this period. Under constant temperature conditions in the laboratory the growth of final instar larvae showed a marked contrast to that of Tipula subnodicornis in that the response to temperature was large and remained positive over a wider temperature range.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum immature gametocytes accumulate in the bone marrow, but their exact location in this tissue remains unclear. METHODS: The stage and deposition pattern of gametocytes was analysed on histological sections of a bone marrow sample collected in a patient with subacute P. falciparum malaria. RESULTS: A majority (89%) of immature stages II to IV gametocytes and a minority (29%) of mature stage V gametocytes were observed in extravascular spaces. Discussion and conclusion These observations represent a valuable step towards understanding sequestration patterns of P. falciparum gametocytes and may ultimately lead to novel transmission-blocking interventions.  相似文献

Thin layer agarose isoelectric focusing (IEF) was used to separate proteins from the larvae of Tipula oleracea Linnaeus and Tipula paludosa Meigen (Diptera, Nematocera). Silver staining revealed protein banding patterns which consistently distinguished these two species at any stage in their life cycles. Within the pH range 5–6 Tipula paludosa contained one major protein band and T. oleracea two bands, with the pI value of the T. paludosa protein being slightly higher than those of T. oleracea. The IEF method is particularly useful for the larval stages of these species because they are often visually inseparable. Leather jackets obtained during a survey of Northern Ireland and north-eastern and western Scotland were tested to determine the distribution and frequency of these species occurring in grassland. In each area surveyed T. paludosa predominated with only one field in Northern Ireland and north-eastern Scotland found to contain T. oleracea. In western Scotland T. oleracea occurred in five fields each year of the survey, and was locally abundant on the Isle of Bute in the 1990/91 survey making up 15% of the total larvae tested.  相似文献

The lipid composition and metabolism of isolated guinea pig megakaryocyte subgroups at various stages of maturation were investigated. Three groups were studied: 1) 67% of megakaryocytes in Group A were immature; 2) Group B was heterogeneous and contained both immature and mature subgroups of megakaryocytes; 3) 92% of megakaryocytes in Group C were mature. Lipid composition was determined by thin-layer chromatography, lipid-phosphorus, and gas-liquid chromatography. Cholesterol, ceramide, and de novo fatty acid synthesis were evaluated with [14C]acetate. [14C]Glycerol was used to assess de novo phospholipid synthesis. 14C-Labeled fatty acids were used to evaluate fatty acid uptake. The phospholipid and cholesterol content was found to be four times greater in mature megakaryocytes than that in immature megakaryocytes, which paralleled the protein content and volume of mature and immature cells. The cholesterol-phospholipid ratio was similar and there were no differences in the phospholipid species in the three groups. Phospholipid and cholesterol synthesis were established in immature megakaryocytes and persisted at about the same level in mature megakaryocytes. The uptake of arachidonic and palmitic acids also occurred primarily in immature cells, while the de novo synthesis of palmitic acid occurs predominantly in mature megakaryocytes. There was an inverse relationship between the uptake of exogenous palmitic acid and fatty acid synthesis, but the uptake of palmitic acid primarily inhibited fatty acid synthesis in mature megakaryocytes. There were differences in the acylation of phospholipid species with arachidonic acid in megakaryocytes at different stages of maturation since the acylation of phosphatidylcholine occurred primarily in immature megakaryocytes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Tipula iridescent virus (TIV) is infective to all four larval instars, pupae, and adults of both sexes of Tipula oleracea, and iridescence has been observed in infected insects at all these stages. Third- and fourth-instar larvae were more resistant to ingested TIV than first and second instars. When TIV was injected into the hemocoel, the results suggested a possible decrease in resistance from the third larval instar to the pupa. Incubation periods (times from injection of TIV to appearance of iridescence) were significantly shorter in older fourth-instar larvae than in younger fourth-instar or thirdinstar larvae, but variability in incubation period was significantly greater in younger fourth-instar larvae than in the other two stages. Many insects which were inoculated with TIV in one stage developed iridescence and died in later stages. The amounts of infective TIV in two infected adults were estimated.  相似文献

Tipula larvae contract coccidial infections in feeding with ease and regularity, yet only a minor portion of the population shows infections. The numbers of schizonts and macrogametes, two stages in the life cycle of Rasajeyna nannyla which parasitize the midguts of leatherjackets, increased throughout the life cycle of the host. A peak number of pathogens occurred in midwinter and another in summer. The pathogen was discharged from the host as oocysts, and the numbers of this stage were high at the begining and end of the leatherjacket life cycle but were low throughout the intervening winter months. Counts of macrogametes were higher than the numbers of schizonts. A difference in number of these stages is reported from Tipula paludosa and T. vittata larvae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Reproductive diapause was induced in A. brassicae by short photo-period at 15 and 20°C but was almost prevented at 25°C. The critical photoperiod was LD 153/4: 81/4 at 15°C, giving 60% diapause. Photoperiodic sensitivity was confined to the early immature stages. Food plant quality appeared not to influence the induction or prevention of diapause. Chilling facilitated diapause termination. Overwintering females brought into the laboratory as adults or pupae from the field from September to December took longer before laying their first eggs than females collected in January and February.  相似文献

1. Large-scale invasions of riparian trees can alter the quantity and quality of allochthonous inputs of leaf litter to streams and thus have the potential to alter stream organic matter dynamics. Non-native saltcedar ( Tamarix sp.) and Russian olive ( Elaeagnus angustifolia ) are now among the most common trees in riparian zones in western North America, yet their impacts on energy flow in streams are virtually unknown.
2. We conducted a laboratory feeding experiment to compare the growth of the aquatic crane fly Tipula (Diptera: Tipulidae) on leaf litter from native cottonwood ( Populus ) and non-native Tamarix and Elaeagnus . Tipula showed positive growth on leaf litter of all three species; however, after 7 weeks, larvae fed Tamarix leaves averaged 1.7 and 2.5 times the mass of those fed Elaeagnus and Populus , respectively. Tipula survival was highest on Populus , intermediate on Tamarix and lowest on Elaeagnus .
3. High Tipula growth on Tamarix probably reflects a combination of leaf chemistry and morphology. Conditioned Tamarix leaf litter had intermediate carbon : nitrogen values (33 : 1) compared to Populus (40 : 1) and Elaeagnus (26 : 1), and it had intermediate proportions of structural carbon (42%) compared to Elaeagnus (57%) and Populus (35%). Tamarix leaves are also relatively small and possibly more easily ingested by Tipula than either Elaeagnus or Populus .
4. Field surveys of streams in the western U.S.A. revealed that Tamarix and Elaeagnus leaf packs were rare compared to native Populus , probably due to the elongate shape and small size of the non-native leaves. Thus we conclude that, in general, the impact of non-native riparian invasion on aquatic shredders will depend not only on leaf decomposition rate and palatability but also on rates of leaf litter input to the stream coupled with streambed retention and subsequent availability to consumers.  相似文献

Tipula (Pterelachisus) recondita Pilipenko & Salmela, sp. n. is described. The new species is collected from two localities: Finland, Kittilä (North boreal ecoregion) and Russia, Primorski kray (Zone of temperate broadleaf and mixed forests). Although variation in the structure of male hypopygium between the Finnish and Russian populations is observed, DNA barcode sequences differ only by three nucleotides (0.2 % K2P distance), supporting presence of one widespread species. K2P minimum distances between the new species and 17 other species of the subgenus range from 5.3 to 15.8 % (mean 8.8 %). The new species is forest-dwelling, known from an old-growth herb-rich forest (Finland) and Quercus mongolica forest (Russia). The new species is perhaps closest to Tipula (Pterelachisus) imitator Alexander and in lesser extent to Tipula (Pterelachisus) pauli Mannheims; the inner gonostylus of both species are illustrated.  相似文献

Of 12 southern African species of ixodid ticks in which the adults are commonly parasitc on cattle, only 4 exhibited massive increases in abundance in the absence of dipping. It is suggested that host availability for the immature stages is the major factor limiting population growth in a given environment. The species showing large increases in abundance are those in which the immature stages are predominantly parasitic on cattle, whereas the species showing small to moderate increases in abundance are those in which the immature stages are parasitic on specific nonungulate hosts.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Differences in decay rates of autumn and spring balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.) leaf litter input to a stream and their effects on a lotic detritivore Tipula commiscibilis Diane were investigated.
2. Autumnal leaf litter decay rates were significantly greater than spring decay rates despite higher initial quality of spring leaves. Reduced spring/summer decomposition rates were the result of decreased microbial activity and biomass, and significantly lower numbers, kinds and biomass of macroinvertebrate detritivores.
3. Growth of the detritivore Tipula commiscibilis was significantly lower when fed spring leaves indicating that they were a poorer quality food source than autumn leaves.
4. Lower numbers of detritivores coupled with reduced leaf quality resulted in lower leaf litter decay rates characteristic of spring/summer.  相似文献

In field and laboratory studies, mortality of African black beetle, Heteronychus arator, in the winter-rainfall, Mediterranean-type climate region of south-western Australia was higher in the late immature stages during summer than in the early immature stages that occur during spring, a contrast to summer-rainfall climatic regions. Greatest mortality occurred around the pupal stage in contrasting soil types, despite drying differences in summer and supplementary watering in some plots. Sampling of natural populations confirmed experimental results that mortality in late immature stages is the major factor limiting H. arator populations under a Mediterranean-type climate. Inter-generation increase in H. arator abundance was uncommon, explaining the consistent abundance typically observed between years in south-western Australia. Random dispersal of newly emerged adults in autumn was inferred to restore uniformity in adult abundance between areas of varying favourability for immature survival.  相似文献

Agrobacterium-mediated transfer of viral sequences to plant cells (agroinfection) was applied to study the susceptibility of immature maize embryos to the pathogen. The shoot apical meristem of immature embryos 10 to 20 days after pollination from four different maize genotypes was investigated for competence for agroinfection. There was a direct correlation between different morphological stages of the unwounded immature embryos and their competence for agroinfection. Agroinfection frequency was highest in the embryogenic line A188. All developmental stages tested showed Agrobacterium virulence gene-inducing activity, whereas bacteriocidal substances were produced at stages of the immature embryos competent for agroinfection. The results suggested that Agrobacterium may require differentiated tissue in the maize shoot apical meristem before wounding for successful T-DNA transfer. This requirement for the young maize embryo has implications for the possible use of Agrobacterium for maize transformation.  相似文献
