BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Under the microgametophytic competition hypothesis, a non-random pattern of seed abortion is expected, in which only the most vigorous seeds reach maturity. In a previous study, it was found that Bauhinia ungulata (Fabaceae) exhibits a pattern of seed abortion dependent on the position of the ovule within the ovary; ovules located in the stylar half of the fruit, close to the point of entry of pollen tubes to the ovary, have a low probability of seed abortion, whereas ovules in the basal half of the fruit are aborted with a high probability. METHODS: A series of experimental fruits was generated, in which ovules from either the stylar (treatments 1 and 2) or the basal (treatments 3 and 4) half of fruits were destroyed, to evaluate whether these patterns of selective seed abortion have an effect on the vigour of the offspring in B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Only 53 % of the seed from control fruits germinated. Seed set in fruits from treatments 1 and 2 showed a significantly lower (33-43 %) percentage of germination; the germination of seeds from fruits in treatments 3 and 4 (49-51 %) did not differ from control seeds. In addition, it was found that the differences in vigour of the offspring are not random with respect to the position of the ovule in the pod. CONCLUSIONS: The overall performance of the seeds correlated with their likelihood of maturation. Seeds located at the basal half of the treatment fruits showed lower values of vigour than seeds located on the stylar half. The differences were more marked for early measures of fitness.  相似文献

Astragalus australis var. olympicus is an endemic plant of the Olympic Mountains, Washington. It is considered a Species of Concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This study focused on the reproductive biology of the plant from flower production through seed germination to identify possible weak points that might contribute to its rarity and impede its conservation. Most plants produced a large mean number of flowers and ovules (314.8 and 4106, respectively), but relatively few of these formed fruits and seeds (25.8 and 3.8%, respectively). In decreasing importance, ovules in fruits were lost to predation, seed abortion, and lack of fertilization. The percentages of these fates differed among sites and years. Excluding pollinators by bagging flowers reduced fruit set by ∼50%, but seed set per fruit and seed mass were unaffected. Germination was affected by scarification, temperature, and moisture availability. About 11% of seeds damaged by predispersal seed predators (weevil larvae) remained viable and were released from dormancy. I hypothesize that predispersal seed predation (over 80% at one site) has a negative effect on population growth. Conservation of this species could benefit from improved fruit set and decreased seed predation.  相似文献

The average number of ovules produced per individual of Lupinus texensis is much greater than the average number of seeds per plant. Each plant produces approximately 2,000 ovules but only 2.5% develop into seeds. One fourth of the seeds is lost due to abortion and 0.3% is lost due to predation on the plant. Mature seeds from this population exhibit a five-fold range in weight, from 10 to 56 mg. The distribution of seed weights in the field population is skewed and leptokurtic. Seed wt is positively correlated with both seed germination and seedling survivorship. Heritability of seed wt is 0.09. There is no correlation between average seed wt per plant and total number of seeds per plant, seeds per pod, or legumes per plant.  相似文献

Seed germination constitutes an important event in the life cycle of plants. Two related seed traits affect fitness: seed size and the timing of seed germination. In three sets of experiments, we (1) partition the sources of seed-size variance in Lobelia inflata into components attributable to fruit size, relative fruit position, and parental identity; (2) examine the influence of pregermination conditions and seed size on time to germination; and (3) assess the fitness consequences of seed size and germination timing under seminatural, harsh conditions. Seed-size variance is attributable to both parental identity and fruit position within an individual. Distal fruits produce larger but fewer seeds. No significant correlation exists between fruit size and seed size, but a trade-off is found between the number and size of seeds contained in a fruit after correcting for fruit size. The timing of germination is influenced by seed size, light conditions before winter, and winter duration. Germination timing influences survival, and despite small seed size in this species (2 × 10 g/seed), seed size has a persistent and significant association with both final plant size and the probability of survival to autumn.  相似文献

Dormancy in Ambrosia artemisiifolia seeds was broken by 8 weeks of stratification. Germination of nondormant seeds was greater in light than in continuous darkness. Embryos of freshly harvested seeds were nondormant. Leaching and scarification did not stimulate germination of the dormant seeds. Exogenous gibberellin (GA3) slightly increased germination of intact dormant seeds, and the effect was greatly increased by scarification. Germination was greater in the light in both tests. Exogenous indoleacetic acid did not stimulate germination of dormant seeds. Endogenous gibberellin and auxin content increased during stratification, and there was also a significant increase in GA during post-stratification at a favorable germination temperature. Inhibitors in the dormant seeds decreased during stratification and post-stratification. The high concentration of chlorogenic acid present in dormant seeds increased slightly during stratification. An unknown phenol very similar to chlorogenic acid in fluorescence and U.V. absorption significantly increased after 2 weeks of stratification. A significant decrease in the concentration of a second unidentified phenol occurred after 2 weeks of stratification. It is proposed that dormancy in Ambrosia artemisiifolia may be controlled by an inhibitor-promoter complex. The dormant seed is characterized by high inhibitor and low promoter levels. In the nondormant seed the balance was shifted to favor the promoter. Evidence suggests that the inhibitor involved may be abscisic acid and the promoters may be gibberellin and auxin. The content of auxin may be partially controlled by the concentration of phenols.  相似文献

Summary One of the foremost technical issues addressed in reintroduction and restoration projects is the feasibility of establishing living plants. To advance the recovery process, the germination requirements of 201 threatened Western Australian seed‐bearing taxa representing a range of life forms, families and ecophysiological characteristics were studied. Procedures used to stimulate germination in otherwise dormant seed involved pretreatment using thermal shock, scarification, seed coat removal, soaking in an aqueous smoke solution and/or additions of the growth hormone gibberellic acid (GA3). Sixty‐one taxa germinated under the basic trial conditions of light (12‐ h photoperiod), temperature (constant 15°C) and moisture, without additional pretreatments. These taxa were generally those with canopy‐stored seeds in the families Proteaceae and Casuarinaceae, and small‐seeded taxa in Myrtaceae. Taxa with soil‐stored seeds required single or multiple cues to stimulate germination. Seeds in the families Fabaceae and Mimosaceae were dependent on cracking of the seed coat, mechanically through nicking of the testa or through thermal shock, as were several non‐leguminous species of the Sterculiaceae and Liliaceae. Complete or partial removal of seed coats, in conjunction with GA3 enhanced germination percentage in some taxa of the Myoporaceae, Lamiaceae and Myrtaceae. Application of GA3 also enhanced germination percentage in members of the Epacridaceae. Several taxa previously stimulated by aqueous smoke solutions were equally responsive to additions of GA3 after complete seed coat removal. In general, species with seed weights greater than 10 mg germinated better under a range of conditions than those with lighter seeds. There was no difference in germinability between resprouter and seeder species, and no obvious relationship between seed weight and germination rate. In the light of previous studies these results indicate that the relationship between germination requirements and ecophysiological characteristics is similar for both threatened and common species. These data will enable better prediction of likely dormancy breaking cues for other related species and will greatly assist the process of recovery and restoration work for mining operations and community bushland regeneration as well as single species reintroductions.  相似文献

Fire affects grassland composition by selectively influencing recruitment. Some exotic species can increase their abundance as a consequence of fire-stimulated seed germination, but response may depend on seed age. Rumex acetosella L. (Polygonaceae, sheep's sorrel) is a cosmopolitan herb that has invaded NW Patagonia's grasslands. This species forms persistent soil seed banks and increases after disturbances, particularly fire. We studied how fire and seed longevity influence R. acetosella germination. In 2008, we conducted laboratory experiments where we exposed different-aged seeds (up to 19 years old) to heat, smoke, charcoal, ash and control treatments. Total percentage germination and mean germination time depended on both seed age and fire treatment. Germination of younger seeds decreased with increasing temperature. There was no general pattern in germination responses of different-aged seeds to smoke, charcoal and ash. While smoke improved the germination of fresh seeds, charcoal decreased germination. Germination of untreated seeds was negatively correlated with seed age, and mean germination time increased with seed age. In most treatments, fresh seeds had lower germination than 1-5-year-old seeds, indicating an after-ripening requirement. Smoke stimulates R. acetosella germination, causing successful recruitment during post-fire conditions. Fresh seeds are particularly responsive to fire factors, possibly because they have not experienced physical degradation and are more receptive to environmental stimuli. Knowing the colonisation potential from the soil seed bank of this species during post-fire conditions will allow us to predict their impact on native communities.  相似文献

The productivity and morphology of fruit and seeds were studied in 30 species (and subspecies) of the tribe Genisteae (Fabaceae) in south-west Spain. The morphological characters of greatest taxonomic value both for the segregation of the two subtribes (Genistinae and Lupininae) recognized in Genisteae and for the delimitation of the lower taxonomic levels (genus and species) are the size of the pod and characters of the pericarp, the colour and weight of the seeds, whether or not an ad exists, and the shape, size, and position of the hilum. In contrast, characters of little taxonomic interest are pod colour, shape and number of seeds, and characters of the lens. There were also found to be major relationships between fruit and seed, and between these and other floral (e.g. corolla size) or reproductive (e.g. polledovule [P/O] and seed/ovule [S/O] ratios) attributes. Thus in this tribe, pod size was positively correlated with corolla size, seed size, the number of viable seeddfruit, and the S/O and P/O ratios. Corolla size was positively correlated with the number of viable seeds/ fruit and with the seed weight. Similarly, the number of seeddfruit was positively correlated with the fruit's weight and with the number of ovules/ovary. Also, the weight of the seeds was positively correlated with the pollen/ovule ratio. There was also positive correlation between the S/O and P/O ratios.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been claimed that ovules linearly ordered within a fruit differ in their probabilities of reaching maturity. This was investigated by studying the effect the position of an ovule within the pod has on seed abortion and seed production in Bauhinia ungulata. METHODS: Fruits collected during the dry seasons of 1999, 2000 and 2001 were opened, and the number, position and status of each ovule within the fruit were recorded. A GLM model was used to assess the effects of population, tree identity and ovule position within the pod on ovule fertilization, seed abortion, seed damage and seed maturation in two populations of B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Nearly 30% of the ovules were not fertilized in 1999; this percentage dropped to 5% the following two years. Seed abortion (50%) and seed damage (15%) were the same every year during the study period. Only 15% of the initial ovules developed into mature seeds in 1999; this value increased to 35% in 2000 and 2001. However, seed survivorship was dependent on the position of the ovule within the pod; non-fertilized and early aborted ovules were found more often near the basal end of the ovary. The frequency of seed damage was not affected by position. Mature seeds were found mainly in the stylar half of fruits, where ovules are likely to be fertilized by fast pollen tubes. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of seed production in B. ungulata is non-random but is dependent upon the position of the ovule within the pod. The results suggest that the seeds produced within a fruit might differ in their vigour.  相似文献

Effect of fruit size and seediness (seed number per fruit) was examined on germination and early growth of seedlings in Mesua ferrea L. Fruiting incidence (number of fruited trees in a population) and fruit loading (number of fruits per tree) vary from one year to the other, and were greater in 1997 than in 1998. Seeds from large fruits (> 40 g) are preferred for forestry plantations and those from small fruits (< 40 g) are discarded, despite a greater proportion of small fruits (63.2 %) than large fruits (36.8 %). A fruit, large or small in size, may contain one, two, three or four seeds. The germination percentage of seeds increased from 1-seeded through 4-seeded fruits both in laboratory and greenhouse conditions, and both in case of large and small fruits. Conversely, the mean seed weight and germination time decreased along this gradient, i.e. seeds from 1-seeded fruits were the heaviest and required maximum time for germination, and the seeds from 4-seeded fruits were the lightest and required minimum time for germination. The seeds from small fruits were lighter in weight, achieved lower germination percentages and required greater germination time than the seeds from large fruits in all four seeded categories. Seedlings from seeds from 1-seeded fruits survived better and with stronger vigour after 1 year of growth than seedlings from 2-, 3- and 4-seeded fruits. Further, seedling survival and vigour were greater for seeds from large rather than small fruits.  相似文献

Seed germination triggered by light exposure (positive photoblastism) has been determined in quantitative studies for numerous plant families and species. For Cactaceae, positive photoblastism is thought to be associated with life form and seed mass, but this association has never been evaluated. To explore hypotheses on associations between seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, life form, taxa and plant height with Relative Light Germination (RLG) in Cactaceae, we evaluated the effect of light on seed germination of 136 taxa. The taxa studied are native to several countries: México, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Perú, USA, and Venezuela. Seed traits contrasted with RLG were life form, seed mass, seed dispersal, seed dormancy, adult plant height and taxon. We found some differences between RLG among taxa; Cacteae, Pachycereeae and Trichocereeae had higher RLG than Notocacteae. RLG was lower for seeds from taller than for shorter taxa, and lower for taxa with heavier seeds than for taxa with lighter seeds. Dispersal syndrome groups varied with RLG. RLG did not differ between cylindrical and globose taxa. Trends found here were in agreement with expectations for small-seeded species to have a light requirement to germinate more often than large-seeded species. This is the first time that cactus height is related to photoblastism. It is possible that seeds from tall plants are larger and thus have the capacity to produce taller seedlings than those from small plants, and that seedlings from large seeds with more resources have the ability to emerge from greater soil depths than those from small seeds.  相似文献

? Self-pollination often provides plants with the benefit of reproductive assurance; thus, it is generally assumed that species' interactions that alter floral attractiveness or rewards, such as nectar robbing, will have little effect on the seed production of selfing species. We challenge this view with experimental data from Comastoma pulmonarium, a selfing annual experiencing a high ratio of nectar robbing in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. ? We manipulated robbing (robbed or netted) and pollination mode (hand-selfed or hand-outcrossed) in a factorial design and measured the number of developing ovules and mature seeds, together with seed weight and seed germination, in each treatment. ? Robbing decreased the number of mature seeds, but not the number of developing ovules, suggesting a negative influence of robbers through indirect effects via selective seed abortion. We found no evidence for early-acting inbreeding depression, but found later-acting inbreeding depression. Our data also suggested that later-acting inbreeding depression of progeny from robbed flowers could be reduced in comparison with that from unrobbed flowers. ? We suggest that nectar robbing can have both negative and positive effects on the quantity and quality, respectively, of progeny produced in selfing plants, and challenge the view that robbing has no effect on selfing species.  相似文献

The seed size and number theories have been proposed to explain the advantages of having many small versus a few large seeds in plants. In particular, seed germination is predicted to be shaped by temperature, and may differ for small and large seeds. In this study, we experimentally test germination at different temperatures in 12 species of arid zone plants in the genus Frankenia L. that differ in seed mass. Seed mass was categorized as “smaller-seeded species” versus “larger-seeded species” for analysis (six species per category). Many of these species co-occur geographically and hence experience similar abiotic conditions (unpredictable rainfall, extremes in temperature, poor soil conditions). The results demonstrated differences in germination as a result of the temperature*seed mass(species) interaction effect. There were significant differences in germination rates across seed mass categories during the first eight days of germination. Germination rates were higher in the larger-seeded species than the smaller-seeded species. Smaller-seeded species had lower germination success but had higher germination rates at lower temperatures, and had a more stringent temperature as a germination cue. These findings are discussed in the context of life-history strategies in arid zone plants.  相似文献

The importance of seed size and density in determining individual plant performance and plant population dynamics in experimental populations of the halophyte Atriplex triangularis was studied. Two distinct seed morphs—large, light seeds and small, dark seeds—are produced by individual A. triangularis plants. Experimental populations consisting of seed size monocultures (large or small seeds) and seed size mixtures were established at three different densities, and the time of germination, plant size, plant survivorship, and plant fecundity were monitored. Marked variation in time of germination was observed among treatments and between seed sizes, but germination within any given treatment occurred over a five- to ten-day period. Large seeds produced larger plants than small seeds did, and this dichotomy was maintained over the course of the entire experiment. Germination date and seed size interacted such that larger plants grew from seeds which germinated earlier than those which germinated later, regardless of seed size. Germination date had a more pronounced effect than seed size did on plant mortality in high density populations. At high density, large seed monocultures experienced greater mortality than small seed monocultures did, but in seed size mixtures, the mortality was evenly distributed between plants from the two seed sizes. Regardless of density conditions and parentage, large and small seeds were produced in equal proportion by the plants. Total seed production, however, was dramatically affected by plant density, and to a lesser degree by germination date. Although seed size effects alone did not appear to affect directly final plant biomass and fecundity, effects of seed size early in ontogeny may have contributed to differences in fecundity.  相似文献

Aruncus dioicus (Walter) Fernald (Rosaceae) is a perennial herbaceous plant whose young shoots are traditionally collected in the wild and consumed as a food in NE Italy. The aim of this study was to determine the germination requirements of its seeds in order to start its cultivation, and to assess the germination of six accessions of the species. Viability of seeds ranged from 86 to 97% in the various accessions. Germination rate was almost null in seeds of two accessions, and ranged from 10.5 to 37.3 in the other ones. The seed coat was permeable to water. Treatments with GA3, KNO3 and mechanical scarification did not enhance the germination, while the cold stratification treatment at 2 °C for different periods improved the germination rate and the mean germination time as compared with the untreated seeds. With 45 days of cold stratification, the germination rate and mean germination time (respectively, 90.1% and 7.7 dd) of seeds were different from those of the untreated seeds. Cold stratified seeds germinated under artificial light and did not germinate in the dark. Seeds of A. dioicus displayed an intermediate physiological dormancy, removable by a cold stratification treatment, requiring both light and cold conditions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intraspecific variation in floral components and reproductive success is often located at the intra-individual level. The arrangement of flowers within inflorescences may explain a great deal of this variation. The variation in number of ovules, fruit set, number of seeds per fruit, seed set, seed weight and seed germination is investigated at different positions within the inflorescence of Silene acutifolia. METHODS: Data were obtained in natural populations, and germination experiments were conducted in a germination chamber. KEY RESULTS: The number of ovules, fruit set, number of seeds, seed set and seed weight, showed a significant decline from early (primary) position to later (tertiary) position. The patterns of intra-inflorescence variation were consistent in different populations and years of study. Seed germination showed an opposite pattern, seeds from primary position showed the lowest germination percentages and seeds from tertiary position the highest, although the effect of position on germination was only marginally significant. There was significant among-population variation in number of ovules per flower. Fruit set also varied significantly among populations, with lower fruit set in the smaller and more isolated population. No significant among-population differences were detected in number of seeds per fruit and seed set. Seeds from the smallest and more isolated population (Arnado) were the lightest. Seed germination showed strong differences between populations, seeds from Arnado started to germinate later, and showed the lowest final germination percentages. CONCLUSIONS: Architectural effects or resource competition are the most commonly proposed hypothesis to explain these patterns. Data suggest that there is less pollen available to pollinate tertiary flowers, and that there is not enough outcross pollen in Arnado. The germination percentages suggest that there is variation in the source of pollen within inflorescences, with high probability of receiving outcross pollen in flowers from primary position, and higher probability of geitonogamous crosses in tertiary flowers.  相似文献

The Effects of Priming and Ageing on Seed Vigour in Tomato   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A comparison was made of the effects of seed priming or ageingtreatments on the performance of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumMill. cv. UC204C) seeds according to a number of indices ofseed vigour. A single lot of tomato seeds was primed in 120mol m–3 K2HPO4 + 150 mol m–3 KNO3 for 5 d at 20?C, or aged at 13% moisture content (dry weight basis) and 50?C for 6 d. Germination percentage (>98%) was unaffectedby priming and reduced to 85% by ageing. X-ray photographs andlongitudinal sections revealed the formation of free space surroundingthe embryo in dry primed seeds, which was not evident in controlor aged seeds. Priming increased the rate of germination atall temperatures above the base temperature (Tb), while ageingdecreased it. Tb was unaffected by priming and only slightlyincreased by ageing. The variation in individual times to germinationwas approximately doubled in both primed and aged seed comparedto the control, based upon the slopes of probit germinationpercentage versus log thermal time curves. Root growth aftergermination tests and seedling growth in both greenhouse andfield tests were not influenced by either priming or ageing. The conductivity test was found to be unreliable as a vigourtest for tomato seeds. The results identify several indiceswhich can be used to quantify seed vigour in tomato. They alsoillustrate that seed priming can enhance seed performance accordingto some criteria, while having no effect or decreasing qualityaccording to other criteria. Seed vigour can apparently be separatedinto various components which can be independently influencedby seed enhancement treatments. Seed number per pod in pea is variable. After fertilization, any number of ovules may abort in the pod. This paper describesan analysis of the relationship between pod growth and seedabortion rate. Pod dry weight was highly correlated to pod lengthbefore the final stage in seed abortion. By measuring pod lengthduring the period of seed formation and counting the seeds inthe same pods at the end of this period, we show that seed numberper pod was correlated with early pod elongation. From thesedata we propose and test a model for predicting seed numberper pod from early pod elongation rates. Key words: Pea, pod length, pod growth, seed number, modelling  相似文献

Germination potential, i.e. vigour manifested at sensu stricto germination, was studied in 22 rice varieties to distinguish between the genetic control for low vigour (lv) at fresh harvest and lv after ageing of seeds. For identifying seed vigour-associated DNA marker(s), correlative studies between (1) physiological parameters viz. germination of (a) unaged seeds under optimum and cold stressed condition, (b) aged seeds under optimal condition and (2) growth-associated biochemical parameters viz. alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and esterase (EST) activity during early germination of fresh seeds and antioxidant potential in dry embryos of fresh and aged (1 year) seeds were undertaken. ADH and EST activity as well as antioxidant potential showed positive correlation with speed of embryo emergence and early seedling growth of seeds. The reduction of antioxidant potential in aged seeds also appeared proportional to germination performance. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis between the varieties was correlated with the above-mentioned vigour parameters, using multiple regression analysis. This led to the identification of four bands associated with the vigour trait at 99% significance level; of these, the ~ 900-bp DNA fragment (named as HVAC 19), through basic local alignment search tool nucleotides analysis, revealed a sequence homology with acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) gene of wheat at 94% similarity level.  相似文献
