Over the past three decades, the red‐winged blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus has served as a model species for studies of sexual selection and the evolution of ornamental traits. Particular attention has been paid to the role of the colorful red‐and‐yellow epaulets that are striking in males but reduced in females and juveniles. It has been assumed that carotenoid pigments bestow the brilliant red and yellow colors on epaulet feathers, but this has never been tested biochemically. Here, we use high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to describe the pigments present in these colorful feathers. Two red ketocarotenoids (astaxanthin and canthaxanthin) are responsible for the bright red hue of epaulets. Two yellow dietary precursors pigments (lutein and zeaxanthin) are also present in moderately high concentrations in red feathers. After extracting carotenoids, however, red feathers remained deep brown in color. HPLC tests show that melanin pigments (primarily eumelanin) are also found in the red‐pigmented barbules of epaulet feathers, at an approximately equal concentration to carotenoids. This appears to be an uncommon feature of carotenoid‐based ornamental plumage in birds, as was shown by comparable analyses of melanin in the yellow feathers of male American goldfinches Carduelis tristis and the red feathers of northern cardinals Cardinalis cardinalis, in which we detected virtually no melanins. Furthermore, the yellow bordering feathers of male epaulets are devoid of carotenoids (except when tinged with a carotenoid‐derived pink coloration on occasion) and instead are comprised of a high concentration of primarily phaeomelanin pigments. The dual pigment composition of red epaulet feathers and the melanin‐only basis for yellow coloration may have important implications for the honesty‐reinforcing mechanisms underlying ornamental epaulets in red‐winged blackbirds, and shed light on the difficulties researchers have had to date in characterizing the signaling function of this trait. As in several other birds, the melanic nature of feathers may explain why epaulets are used largely to settle aggressive contests rather than to attract mates. 相似文献

Glucocorticoid hormones facilitate responses to environmental challenges by mediating diverse physiological and behavioral changes, including resource mobilization and altered reproductive effort. Elevated glucocorticoids might indicate that an individual is facing high levels of environmental challenges and thus, elevated concentrations might be associated with reduced fitness (CORT-fitness hypothesis). Alternatively, the energetic demands of reproduction might be a challenge that requires elevated glucocorticoids to mobilize resources to support reproductive effort, ultimately increasing reproductive investment and fitness (CORT-adaptation hypothesis). Investigations of glucocorticoid-fitness relationships have yielded mixed results. Variation in the direction of this relationship could be caused in part by differences in the contexts in which the relationship was assessed. Incorporating context, such as life history stage, could be key to understanding the role of glucocorticoids in influencing fitness outcomes. We investigated the relationship between corticosterone and reproductive effort and success within a single life history stage: incubation of eggs. In an observational study, we measured baseline corticosterone in incubating female red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), monitored incubation behavior, and determined hatching success for each nest. Incubating birds with higher baseline corticosterone concentrations had more frequent, shorter incubation bouts and spent less time overall incubating their clutches of eggs than birds with lower corticosterone concentrations. Elevated corticosterone was also associated with lower clutch mass, but neither corticosterone nor incubation effort were correlated with hatching success. Although experimental tests are needed to establish causation, these results suggest that during the incubation period, corticosterone might shift resource investment towards self-maintenance, and away from current reproductive effort. 相似文献

Background and Aims
Soil contains many different C fractions which have diverse physical and chemical compositions. Examining these differential soil C fractions in response to N enrichment is helpful for better understanding soil C changes under the predominantly increasing N deposition. In this study, we used a field N addition experiment in a grassland to explore the effects of various N enrichment levels on soil C fractions.Methods
We conducted a field manipulative experiment which used a Latin square design with six N addition levels of 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 g N m?2 year?1 since 2003 in a semiarid grassland in northern China. Soil samples were collected in August (when plants have the greatest biomass), 2011. We measured C and N concentrations in soil light fraction, microbial biomass, extractable organic matter, heavy fraction, and total soil C and N.Results
The results showed that total soil C and N, and heavy fraction C and N were not significantly affected by N addition after 9 years of treatments. In contrast, different N enrichment levels changed soil light fraction C and N, ranging from 4.3 to 27.7 % and 3.3–30.0 %, respectively. Moreover, both light fraction C and N had a nonlinear relationship with N addition rates, and the threshold for N-induced change in light fraction C and N was near 16 g N m?2 year?1 in this semiarid grassland. Increases of soil light fraction C and N primarily resulted from changes in biotic (N-stimulated aboveground biomass) and abiotic (soil temperature, moisture and pH) factors under N enrichment. Soil microbial biomass exponentially declined with increasing N, but extractable organic C showed a positive linear response to N enrichment rates. Changes in microbial biomass C and extractable organic C were primarily due to the reduced soil pH under N addition.Conclusions
Our findings suggest that various soil C fractions differentially respond to elevated N, because different sets of biotic and abiotic factors regulate those fractions under N enrichment. 相似文献4.
Retrotransposable element insertions are 20 times more numerous per unit length of DNA in the large human genome compared to the small Drosophila genome. Whereas all Drosophila elements are subject to constant turnover (recent insertion and elimination by selection), this has not generally been the case for human retrotransposons. We suggest that a difference in recombination adopted by these organisms in response to the deleterious effects of interspersed repeated DNA can explain in part this fundamental difference between the evolutionary dynamics of fruit fly and human retrotransposons. 相似文献

Many bird species participate in dawn singing, a behaviour categorized by intensive singing at dawn; however, many of these species deliver only one song type at dawn. While there are many proximate and ultimate hypotheses for why birds sing at dawn, little is known about whether males are able to vary one simple song to convey different information. We used autonomous acoustic recorders to record dawn songs of field sparrows and quantified three parameters of singing performance: 1) bout length, 2) song rate, and 3) song complexity. We found that males sang the longest dawn bouts during their mate's fertile period, the highest song rates during the post-fertile period, and the most complex songs during the pre-fertile period. The change in dawn singing behaviour with their mate's breeding stage suggest the purpose of dawn song may be context dependent. Our results demonstrate that male field sparrows, while only having a single song type sung at dawn, may convey information for both intra- and intersexual purposes. While it is generally assumed that dawn song has a specific function, the variability in the duration, rate, and complexity of dawn song in field sparrows suggests that they are conveying different information and that dawn song likely has multiple functions. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the modifying influence of moderate ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation exposure on structurally different flavonol glycosides and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives during pre-harvest using kale, a leafy Brassica species with a wide spectrum of different non-acylated and acylated flavonol glycosides. Juvenile kale plants were treated with short-term (1 day), moderate UV-B radiation [0.22-0.88 kJ m?2 day?1 biologically effective UV-B (UV-B(BE))]. Twenty compounds were quantified, revealing a structure-specific response of flavonol glycosides and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives to UV-B radiation. A dose- and structure-dependent response of the investigated phenolic compounds to additional UV-B radiation was found. The investigated quercetin glycosides decreased under UV-B; for kaempferol glycosides, however, the amount of sugar moieties and the flavonol glycoside hydoxycinnamic acid residue influenced the response to UV-B. Monoacylated kaempferol tetraglucosides decreased in the investigated UV-B range, whereas the monoacylated kaempferol diglucosides increased strongly with doses of 0.88 kJ m?2 day?1 UV-B(BE) . The UV-B-induced increase in monoacylated kaempferol triglucosides was dependent on the acylation pattern. Furthermore, the hydroxycinnamic acid glycosides disinapoyl-gentiobiose and sinapoyl-feruloyl-gentiobiose were enhanced in a dose-dependent manner under UV-B. While UV-B radiation treatments often focus on flavonol aglycones or total flavonols, our investigations were extended to structurally different non-acylated and acylated glycosides of quercetin and kaempferol. 相似文献

Birds in which both sexes produce complex songs are thought to be more common in the tropics than in temperate areas, where typically only males sing. Yet the role of phylogeny in this apparent relationship between female song and latitude has never been examined. Here, we reconstruct evolutionary changes in female song and breeding latitude in the New World blackbirds (Icteridae), a family with both temperate and tropical representatives. We provide strong evidence that members of this group have moved repeatedly from tropical to temperate breeding ranges and, furthermore, that these range shifts were associated with losses of female song more often than expected by chance. This historical perspective suggests that male-biased song production in many temperate species is the result not of sexual selection for complex song in males but of selection against such songs in females. Our results provide new insights into the differences we see today between tropical and temperate songbirds, and suggest that the role of sexual selection in the evolution of bird song might not be as simple as we think. 相似文献

It was determined that the protein with the shortest half-life, among the several necessary for the first response, is different from its counterpart among the several necessary for the second response. Thermal tolerance was determined in two closely related amphipod species from contrasting environments (sub-littoral and supra-littoral zones of the sea) using HSP expression and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The levels of HSP70 and small HSPs present in untreated control animals were higher in the supra-littoral Orchestia gammarellus than in the sub-littoral Gammarus oceanicus. Under the acute thermal stress, HSP levels increased less strongly in O. gammarellus than in G. oceanicus. Activities of antioxidant enzymes peroxidase, catalase and glutathione S-transferase, were more pronounced in the supra-littoral O. gammarellus then in the sub-littoral G. oceanicus. We conclude that the environmental temperature regime modifies key cellular defense mechanisms in amphipods. Higher levels of constitutive HSP synthesis and higher levels of antioxidant enzymes in the supra-littoral species likely reflects adaptation to this highly thermally variable environment. 相似文献

Carbon (C) availability to ectomycorrhizal fungi is likely to increase at elevated atmospheric CO(2). To determine whether there are any broad patterns in species' responses that relate to their ecology, we compared growth, respiration, N uptake and C exudation of 17 fungal isolates in liquid culture. As a surrogate for increased C availability we used three different C:N ratios (10:1, 20:1 and 40:1), moving from conditions of C limitation to conditions of N limitation. Responses were species-specific, and suilloid fungi were the most responsive in terms of growth and respiration. In contrast, a group of eight isolates showed no growth increase above C:N 20:1. This inability to respond was not due to N limitation, although there were marked differences in N uptake between isolates. At higher C availability isolates generally became more efficient in converting C into biomass. Six isolates showed net release of exudates into the culture medium (up to 40% of the C in biomass and respiration). We conclude that the findings were in agreement with field observations, and suggest that pure culture observations can yield ecologically relevant information on how ectomycorrhizal fungi may respond under conditions of elevated CO(2). 相似文献

In response to DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) cells activate a signaling cascade known as the DNA damage response (DDR) whose main function is to promote the repair of the lesions while it delays cell cycle progression until repair is completed. Whereas most cells respond alike to an equivalent dose of DNA damage, certain degree of heterogeneity exists in the strength of the DDR that is assembled in each individual cell. This variability might be accounted for by erratic changes that aggregate into the inherent noise of biological systems. However, we have recently found that the overall degree of chromatin compaction impinges a direct constrain on the activation of the DDR, providing a simple chromatin-based model to explain the cell-to-cell variability observed in cell populations. We here provide an overview of the available data, including our own, that would be supportive of such a model and discuss how this perspective might be used to explain previous observations 相似文献

Noise in environmental variables is often described as 'coloured', where colour describes the exponent beta of the scaling relationship between the amplitude of variability and its frequency of occurrence (1/f(beta)). Different environments are known to have different colours and models have shown that colour can have important impacts upon population persistence and dynamics. This study advances current knowledge about the impact of environmental colour using a trophic model (consumer-resource) experiencing environmental noise (temperature) in a biologically realistic manner--derived mechanistically from metabolic scaling theory. The model demonstrates that the variability of consumers and resources can respond differently to changing environmental colour, depending upon (i) their relative ability to track and over or undercompensate for environmental changes and (ii) the relative sensitivity of their equilibria to environmental changes. These results form the basis with which to interpret differences and facilitate comparisons of the variability of ecological communities across gradients of environmental colour. 相似文献

Iron-efficient (WF9 corn and Coker 227 oat) and Fe-inefficient (ys1 corn and TAM 0–312 oat) cultivars were comparatively tested for their response to Fe-deficiency stress induced by the use of either ferrous or ferric chelators. Corn and oats were grown in 20 M Fe with 0, 60, and 120 M BPDS and 40 M Fe with 0, 120, and 240 M BPDS and 20 M Fe with 0 and 40 M EDDHA. All four cultivars tested, both Fe-efficient and Fe-inefficient, continuously reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+ at a low level as evidenced by the production of Fe2+ (BPDS)3 in test nutrient solutions over time. Severity of chlorosis increased as more BPDS was added to the nutrient solutions for both WF9 and ys1 corn, but unlike corn, Coker 227 and TAM 0-312 oats were both able to obtain Fe from the Fe2+ (BPDS)3 complex and were less chlorotic as a result. In short-term (4-hour) in vivo measurements, iron-stressed WF9 (Fe-efficient) corn reduced more Fe3+ to Fe2+ than similarly stressed ys1 corn, Coker 227 oat or TAM 0-312 oat. Thus, at the same time that Fe-efficient WF9 corn reduces more Fe than the other cultivars, it is also unable to compete with BPDS for that Fe in the nutrient solution. These differences coupled with the observation that only Coker 227 oat produced measureable iron solubilizing substances (phytosiderophores) suggest that these two species differ in their mechanisms for obtaining Fe during Fe-deficiency stress. 相似文献

1. Spatial variation in breeding performance is of critical importance in understanding the large-scale distribution and abundance of living species, and in understanding species conservation. We studied the large-scale spatial variation in reproductive output of two species of declining British bird, the song thrush Turdus philomelos and the blackbird Turdus merula .
2. We developed a method to predict spatial variation in reproductive output. Brood size and nest failure rates during the incubation and nestling periods were related to environmental factors using generalized linear models. Predicted values obtained from these models were combined to give values of number of fledglings produced per nesting attempt for 10-km squares throughout Britain.
3. We observed substantial spatial variation in reproductive output for both species; the component that varied most was nest failure rate during incubation. We were more successful in relating environmental factors to spatial variation in reproductive output for song thrush than for blackbird.
4. Reproductive output in both species was affected mainly by factors that vary on a small spatial scale. Nest failure rate during incubation increased significantly where corvids were more abundant, suggesting a role for avian nest predators in determining spatial variation in reproductive output.
5. Our approach can be extended readily to other species of birds, to other taxonomic groups and to finer spatial scales. Such models could be used to evaluate the implications of current and proposed wider countryside management for spatial variation in breeding performance. Three main families of SODs in plants may be distinguished according to the metal in the active center: CuZnSODs, MnSOD, and FeSOD. CuZnSODs have two sub-families localized either in plant cell cytosol or in plastids, the MnSOD family is essentially restricted to mitochondria, and the FeSOD enzyme family has been typically localized into the plastid. Here, we describe, based on a phylogenetic tree and experimental data, the existence of two FeSOD sub-families: a plastidial localized sub-family that is universal to plants, and a cytosolic localized FeSOD sub-family observed in determinate-forming nodule legumes. Anti-cytosolic FeSOD (cyt_FeSOD) antibodies were employed, together with a novel antibody raised against plastidial FeSOD (p_FeSOD). Stress conditions, such as nitrate excess or drought, markedly increased cyt_FeSOD contents in soybean tissues. Also, cyt_FeSOD content and activity increased with age in both soybean and cowpea plants, while the cyt_CuZnSOD isozyme was predominant during early stages. p_FeSOD in leaves decreased with most of the stresses applied, but this isozyme markedly increased with abscisic acid in roots. The great differences observed for p_FeSOD and cyt_FeSOD contents in response to stress and aging in plant tissues reveal distinct functionality and confirm the existence of two immunologically differentiated FeSOD sub-families. The in-gel FeSOD activity patterns showed a good correlation to cyt_FeSOD contents but not to those of p_FeSOD. This indicates that cyt_FeSOD is the main active FeSOD in soybean and cowpea tissues. The diversity of functions associated with the complexity of FeSOD isoenzymes depending of the location is discussed. 相似文献
