Ten years'' hydrological investigations at Danum have provided strong evidence of the effects of extremes of drought, as in the April 1992 El Niño southern oscillation event, and flood, as in January 1996. The 1.5 km2 undisturbed forest control catchment experienced a complete drying out of the stream for the whole 1.5 km of defined channel above the gauging station in 1992, but concentrated surface flow along every declivity from within a few metres of the catchment divide after the exceptional rains of 19 January 1996. Under these natural conditions, erosion is episodic. Sediment is discharged in pulses caused by storm events, collapse of debris dams and occasional landslips. Disturbance by logging accentuates this irregular regime. In the first few months following disturbance, a wave of sediment is moved by each storm, but over subsequent years, rare events scour sediment from bare areas, gullies and channel deposits. The spatial distribution of sediment sources changes with time after logging, as bare areas on slopes are revegetated and small gullies are filled with debris. Extreme storm events, as in January 1996, cause logging roads to collapse, with landslides leading to surges of sediment into channels, reactivating the pulsed sediment delivery by every storm that happened immediately after logging. These effects are not dampened out with increasing catchment scale. Even the 721 km2 Sungai Segama has a sediment yield regime dominated by extreme events, the sediment yield in that single day on 19 January 1996 exceeding the annual sediment load in several previous years. In a large disturbed catchment, such road failures and logging-activity-induced mass movements increase the mud and silt in floodwaters affecting settlements downstream. Management systems require long-term sediment reduction strategies. This implies careful road design and good water movement regulation and erosion control throughout the logging process.  相似文献

Erosion and sedimentation processes within the channel and on the floodplain are indicative of catchment hydrodynamic procedures, as well as the associated nutrient and contaminant transportation. In this paper, we linked the SWAT model with the hydraulic HEC-RAS model to set up a sediment model for 10 river sections in the Upper Stör catchment and simulated the sediment processes from 2001 to 2010. Based on the HEC-RAS output, quantification and comparison of channelized and floodplain sediment processes were conducted. The results indicate that (1) with an average sedimentation depth of 2.85 cm, the deposition process dominated the Upper Stör catchment at the decadal time scale, and the land use/cover condition resulted in differences in sedimentation amounts between different sub-catchments, and (2) the mean deposition rates were 1.75 g/m2/d in the channel and 1.69 g/m2/d on the floodplain, and the floodplain deposition accounted for only 1% of the total sedimentation amount. This observation was mainly caused by the stream power distribution in the channel and on the floodplain. (3) The granularity of the channelized sedimentation was determined by the altitude of the river section, while the granularity of the floodplain sedimentation was positively correlated with the stream power of the flood. The D50s of the channelized and floodplain sediments were 0.92 mm and 0.16 mm, respectively, while the D90 of the sediment was 4.2 mm in the channel and 0.32 mm on the floodplain. Despite the higher uncertainty of the sediment simulation, the results yielded by the combination of the HEC-RAS and SWAT models are comparable to the traditional radioactive dating, sediment trapping or combined model methods used in similar and nearby catchments.  相似文献

植被恢复作为黄土高原防治水土流失的重要措施,但极端降雨诱发的浅层滑坡在植被恢复的沟坡上频繁发生,影响流域的产流产沙过程。基于野外原位模拟降雨试验,在60 mm/h降雨强度下,研究草被沟坡浅层滑坡发生特征及其发生前后的产流产沙差异。结果表明:(1)极端降雨所诱发的草被沟坡上的浅层滑坡深度为14-36 cm,与自然强降雨所导致的浅层滑坡深度相贴合,均是低于50 cm。(2)植被根系与土壤容重、孔隙度等土壤性质显著相关(P<0.05),致使滑坡面上、下层土壤物理性质差异显著(P<0.05)。由于土壤性质的差异,在极端降雨下滑坡面上层土壤水分更快达到饱和(饱和度>90%),导致浅层滑坡的发生。(3)草被坡面浅层滑坡后的径流与产沙均显著增大(P<0.05)。三个小区的平均径流率在滑坡后增大了4.0-13.1倍,其平均含沙量和产沙率在滑坡后分别增大了9.9-54.9倍和70-841倍。研究结果有助于加深了解植被沟坡的侵蚀产沙机理,并为浅层滑坡防治提供科学依据。  相似文献

为有效利用水蚀风蚀交错区退耕封育坡面植被,确定合理的植被利用强度非常必要.本试验选取黄土高原水蚀风蚀交错区典型小流域——六道沟小流域为试验区,在多年退耕封育坡面布设径流小区,通过人工模拟降雨试验,研究植被地上部分在不同利用强度下各坡度(10°、20°和30°)坡面产流、产沙变化特征,以确定合理的利用强度. 结果表明: 次降雨过程中径流速率大体可分为两个阶段:初期迅速增长阶段和中后期增长变缓或趋于准稳定阶段.侵蚀速率的变化趋势因坡度的不同而略有差异.利用强度对产流量有显著影响,产流量随利用强度的加强而增加.坡度对侵蚀量影响显著,侵蚀量表现为20°坡面>30°坡面>10°坡面.以植被地上部分未利用小区为对照,相对增水量和相对增沙量均随利用强度加强而增加.结合降雨资料推测,退耕15年左右坡面植被地上部分盖度达到25%时,坡面年土壤侵蚀量基本低于容许土壤流失量.应重视该区20°坡面植被的恢复治理工作.  相似文献

To clarify the sediment yield processes following a disturbance by a forest fire in a mountainous catchment, and considering the hydrological and geomorphological processes in the headwater, we measured bedload sediment yield at rainfall events in disturbed and secondary forest catchments in the western part of Japan. The three catchments were under different hydrogeological conditions. The IK, TB and TY catchments were disturbed by forest fires in 2000, 1994, and 1978, respectively. In the IK catchment, although runoff response to rainfall was fastest with high peak flows, the catchment also had the highest base flow. Moreover, the annual sediment yield there was about ten times as high as in the other two catchments, and it was found that there was a steep linear curve in the relationship between precipitation and bedload sediment yield. This is thought to be caused by overland flow generation following water repellency on the slopes, and by the accumulated sediment that forms the thick soil layer on the valley bottom. On the other hand, in the TB catchment runoff experienced high peak flows at rainfall events and low base flows, and there was a gradual linear curve in the precipitation–sediment yield relationship. This might be the result of there being a thin soil layer on the hillslope and on the valley bottom because of successive erosion after the fire. In the TY catchment, runoff had a low peak flow at rainfall events and a high base flow; and the bedload sediment yield increased exponentially with increasing precipitation. Therefore, sediment yield in the TB catchment was more than that in the TY during storm events with precipitation of less than 100 mm, whereas it was the opposite during heavier rainfalls. It indicates that there is a thick soil layer on the slope and a thin soil layer on the valley bottom in the TY catchment following the recovering of vegetation, and that the sediment yield process predominates only during big rainfall events, only then does subsurface flow generate.  相似文献

1. Vegetated islands within river corridors are pivotal landscape features and are among the first to disappear as a consequence of flow regulation and channelisation. However, how vegetated islands vary along human‐impacted rivers is poorly understood. 2. We carried out a detailed analysis of the contemporary distribution, diversity and environmental state of vegetated islands within 12 human‐impacted European rivers, using 75 Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images (1999–2002), historical maps, DEM data and landscape metrics. We tested whether channel fragmentation, catchment land use and the environmental state of fringing floodplains determine the spatial patterns of the islands. We also analysed the historical change of islands within selected sections of the Upper Danube, Upper Rhine and Olt rivers. 3. We identified 2771 islands in the contemporary landscape, varying from 0.06 to 9828 ha. Islands covered up to 21% of the active channel area and contributed up to 32% of the total riparian ecotone length. Island density ranged from 0.06 islands per river‐km (River Sava) to 1.6 islands per river‐km (River Tagliamento). River regulation has led to a marked loss of island density: 94% in the Upper Danube, 93% in the Upper Rhine, and 69% in the Olt. The environmental state of the islands was significantly less altered by human activity than of their fringing floodplains; 93.4% of the vegetated islands exhibited a near‐natural state, while 86% of the fringing floodplains were expansively converted to agricultural and urban land uses. 4. Our results highlight the ubiquitous presence of vegetated islands, their sensitivity to river regulation and their pivotal role for the future restoration and management of river corridors.  相似文献

Prior studies on Lake Naivasha relevant to understanding sediment dynamics include a bathymetric map, a paleolimnological study of fossil invertebrate assemblages in lake sediment, an overview of lake level fluctuations throughout the 20th century, and identification of a dynamic assemblage of macrophyte zones that has responded both to these changes in lake level and to more recent, alien species. Sediment samples collected from the rivers systems and the lake were examined physically and chemically. River sediment characteristics reflect geology and geomorphological processes in the catchment, whereas lake sediment stratigraphy has responded to past lake level changes. Such changes have caused significant changes in aquatic vegetation assemblages. Present day sediment dynamics in the lake are governed by the presence of river point sources in the north and wave-induced re-suspension, such that sediments introduced by rivers are transported in easterly and southerly directions, and are eventually deposited in the eastern, central and southern parts of the lake. Sedimentary deposition is also occurring in northern areas that once were protected by papyrus swamp vegetation but now only have a narrow fringe, highlighting the important role of swamp vegetation in filtering out suspended particulates and thereby controlling water quality in the lake. Geochemical analyses of river and lake sediments indicate that they represent fairly undisturbed background conditions. Higher-than-expected concentrations of cadmium, iron, nickel and zinc found in both river and lake sediment are likely to derive from volcanic rocks and/or lateritic soils found in the lake catchment.  相似文献

In order to investigate the influence of catchment characteristics on suspended sediment properties, suspended sediment samples were collected from the outlets of 60 small catchments located throughout Southwest England over a 14-month period. The catchments were selected to provide a representative range of topographic, land use, soil and geological characteristics. The suspended sediment samples were collected using time-integrating trap samplers, emptied at monthly intervals. Laboratory analysis focused on a selection of suspended sediment properties, including particle size composition, cation exchange capacity, and organic carbon, nitrogen, metal, radionuclide and phosphorus content. The results presented show that despite the substantial variability of catchment characteristics associated with the 60 sampling sites, the suspended sediment properties generally fell within a relatively limited range. However, statistical analysis identified significant spatial variability of suspended sediment within Southwest England, which in turn can be linked to catchment characteristics.  相似文献

More than 900 isolates from at least 1500 patients were tested within 1996-1998. Gram-negative organisms were the main pathogens isolated from patients with different forms of nosocomial complications such as late pneumonia, associated with artificial ventilation of the lungs, and various secondary wound or urinary tract infections. The prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was stated. Antibioticograms showed that the most active drugs were imipenem (more than 90 per cent of the susceptible isolates) and ticarcillin/clavulanate (48-58 per cent of the susceptible isolates). The activity of ticarcillin/clavulanate (Timentin) was practically the same as that of imipenem against 21 strains of P.aeruginosa isolated from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of 21 patients with sepsis and 3 patients with secondary purulent meningitis.  相似文献

Dayat-er-Roumi is a small lake (73 ha) located in the sub-humid region of NE Morocco. Lake sediment and catchment soils are examined to identify areas of sediment supply to the lake. Magnetic measurements and clay mineralogy are used to show that recent lake sediment is derived predominantly from eroded topsoil. 210Pb dating of one sediment core provided a chronology for the calculation of sediment accumulation rates. The rate of sediment accumulation increased slowly throughout the earlier part of the 20th century and then rapidly in the mid-1970's. These increases are attributed to human disturbances in the catchment, initially by olive planting and then by drainage of a wetland area.  相似文献

运用可调坡度、地下孔(裂)隙度试验钢槽装填土石模拟喀斯特裸坡,采用人工模拟降雨的方法探索了喀斯特裸坡产流产沙过程。结果表明:降雨强度、坡度和地下孔(裂)隙度对喀斯特裸坡产流产沙均有明显的影响。(1)在30、50、80mm/h降雨强度下地表产流产沙存在临界降雨强度,临界降雨强度在50—80mm/h之间,地下孔(裂)隙产流量和产沙量均随降雨强度增大呈现先增大后减小的变化趋势,产流量随降雨强度变化顺序为503080mm/h,产沙量随降雨强度大小变化顺序为508030mm/h。(2)随着坡度增大,地下输沙模数减小,其大小随坡度变化的顺序为10°15°20°25°;同一降雨历程内,坡度越小,单位时间内的地下输沙模数减小量越大,其大小随坡度变化的顺序为10°15°20°25°。(3)地下孔(裂)隙度对地下产流产沙影响显著,地下孔(裂)隙度的增大使地下流失量增大。地下产流比重、产沙比重均随地下孔(裂)隙度的增大而增大,大小顺序均为1%3%5%。研究有助于深入了解喀斯特坡地土壤侵蚀机理,为喀斯特石漠化治理和生态修复提供理论依据。  相似文献

Cores of overbank deposits were collected from locations along the Rivers Swale and Aire in Yorkshire, U.K. The middle and lower reaches of the River Aire drain heavily industrialized and urbanized areas, whereas the River Swale drains a predominantly rural catchment, although Pb and Zn mining in the headwater areas in the 19th century introduced contaminated sediment. Downcore changes in the heavy and trace metal (Al, Cr, Cu, K, Pb, Sr and Zn) and phosphorus (P) content of the floodplain sediment were used to provide evidence of temporal changes in the contaminant content of the fine-grained sediment transported by the study rivers over the last ca. 100 years. The core collected from the downstream site on the River Aire shows upcore increases in P content, which reflects the expansion of the urban area during this period. Variations in the metal content of the deposited sediment over the period represented by the core reflect changes in the extent and type of industrial activity in the catchment. For the cores from the River Swale, there are no major upcore changes in the P content of the sediment, but there was a period characterized by increased levels of Pb and Zn which can be linked to metal mining activities.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic activities can increase fine sediment supply to streams over multiple spatial and temporal extents. Identifying the processes responsible, and the scale at which any effects on stream organisms become evident, are key management needs, but appropriately scaled surveys are surprisingly few. 2. We surveyed macroinvertebrates and superficial fine sediments at two spatial resolutions (reach‐ and patch‐scale) in tributaries of the River Usk, a temperate, montane catchment in rural Wales (U.K.). Land use, habitat and geomorphological character were measured on‐site or derived from an existing database (=Fluvial Audit). We aimed to identify: (i) how in‐stream sediments varied with land use and associated geomorphology; (ii) likely consequences for macroinvertebrates and (iii) any scale‐dependence in relationships between macroinvertebrates and sediment character. 3. At both the reach‐ and patch‐scales, bed cover by fine sediment was related directly to the extent of eroding banks 500 m upstream. In turn, sedimentation and bank erosion were negatively correlated with catchment or riparian woodland extent. 4. At the reach scale, macroinvertebrate composition varied with catchment land use and stream chemistry, with richness declining as rough grazing or woodland was replaced by improved grassland. There was no response to deposited sediment except for weak increase in the relative abundance of oligochaetes. 5. By contrast, at the patch scale, fine sediments were accompanied by pronounced changes in invertebrate composition, and we ranked the 27 most common taxa according to their apparent sediment tolerance. General estimating equations showed that total and Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera richness decreased significantly by 20% and 25% at the most sediment impacted sites (30% cover) by comparison with sediment‐free sites. 6. We conclude that sediment deposition in the upper Usk system mostly reflects local bank erosion, with riparian woodland likely to mediate this process through bank stability. Fine sediment release had marked ecological effects, but these were detectable only at patch‐to‐patch scales. We suggest that investigation of localized sediment release in streams will benefit from scale‐dependent or scale‐specific sampling, and some effects could go undetected unless sample resolution is selected carefully.  相似文献

Fish ponds in central and eastern Europe are artificial lakes of less than 1 ha to several 100 ha in size. Some of them were created around 900 years ago. These fish ponds form an important part of the hydrological system in the landscape; they also serve as water purification systems and sediment traps, provide habitat for many plant and animal species, as well as being used for recreation purposes—but above all, they are dedicated to fish production. The original oligo- or mesotrophic character of these fish ponds has been altered to one of eutrophic or even hypertrophic conditions due to the nature of the intensive management for high fish production, as well as agriculture practices within the catchment area. It can also be due to other uses of fish ponds, such as wastewater recipients. A thick layer of black anaerobic sediment invariably develops and serves as an uncontrolled internal source of nutrients. In order to stop the development of water blooms and restore the lake to reasonable healthy conditions, both the external and internal loading has to be reduced. An example of such a fish pond restoration within the Czech Republic is described. The phosphorus budget of the Vajgar fish pond (40 ha, S Bohemia) was evaluated and the dry matter, organic matter, nutrients, heavy metals and other metals content were estimated in the vertical profile of the fish pond's sediment. A precision suction dredger was designed, constructed, and used for the selective removal of 330 000 m3 black sediment from the Vajgar fish pond. The sediment was pumped to settling ponds at a distance of 2.5 km. Later, the suction dredger was used for sediment removal from other fish ponds. In one case, 40 000 m3 of eutrophic sediment was directly applied on an agriculture field. In another case, sediment containing oil products was decontaminated by using a biocatalyst and bacterial culture. Sediment removal from Vajgar fish pond resulted in a temporary negative phosphorus budget (lower concentrations in the outflow than the inflow). The temporary absence of cyanobacteria (Microcystis sp.) blooms was the result of the removal of the black sediment layer. The improvement of water quality after sediment removal was, however, temporary. A more holistic approach, aimed at the reduction of matter losses from the fish pond's catchment area, is therefore being adopted. The principles of such an holistic approach are described.  相似文献

We investigated three slopes (in southern Poland, the Carpathian Mts, and the Sudeten Mts) subject to catastrophic, sudden landslides. To reconstruct past landslide activity, we analysed the eccentricity of tree rings in the stems of Norway spruce (Picea abies) using a per cent eccentricity index method. We obtained data on year-by-year changes in eccentricity patterns of single specimens, as well as data on landslide events dated from the whole population of trees sampled on each slope (13–30 spruce trees). These data supplied indirect information on the temporal variability of landslide activity on the three slopes revealing that all three slopes were subject to frequent landslide activity (recurrence intervals 2.0–2.7 years) well before catastrophic events that occurred in 1997 and 2010. The study also showed that 3–5 years before a catastrophic event the sample trees started to record increasing ground instability demonstrated as an uninterrupted, sudden increase in the eccentricity of single trees. Our results suggest that the application of dendrochronological methods can reveal slopes at an increased risk of catastrophic landsliding well in advance. The methods we applied show great promise for forecasting catastrophic landslides and assessing landslide hazard, slope stability and the effectiveness of engineering works undertaken to stabilise landslides.  相似文献

Bacteriological effects of hydraulically dredging polluted bottom sediment in the navigation channel of the Upper Mississippi River (river mile 827.5 [about 1,332 km] to 828.1 [about 1,333 km]) were investigated. Bottom sediment in the dredging site contained high total coliform densities (about 6,800 most-probable-number total coliform index per g [dry weight] and 3,800 membrane filter total coliforms per g [dry weight]), and fecal coliforms comprised an average 32% of each total coliform count. Total coliform and fecal coliform densities in water samples taken immediately below the dredge discharge pipe were each approximately four times corresponding upstream values; fecal streptococcus densities were approximately 50 times corresponding upstream values. Correlation analysis indicated that mean turbidity values downstream to the dredging operation were directly and significantly (r greater than 0.94) related to corresponding total coliform, fecal coliform, and fecal streptococcus densities. Salmonellae and shigellae were not recovered from either upstream or downstream water samples. Turbidity and indicator bacteria levels had returned to predredge values within less than 2 km below the dredge spoil discharge area at the prevailing current velocity (about 0.15 m/s).  相似文献

Overbank sedimentation on river floodplains can result in significant reduction of the suspended sediment load transported by a river and can thus represent an important component of the catchment sediment budget. Such conveyance losses will also exert an important influence on sediment-associated contaminant fluxes and budgets. This contribution reports the results of a study of sediment-associated contaminants (i.e. total-P, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) fluxes in the River Swale (1346 km2) and River Aire (1002 km2) in Yorkshire, U.K., aimed at quantifying the role of overbank floodplain sedimentation in the sediment-associated contaminant budgets. The catchment of the River Aire is dominated by urban and industrial land use in its middle and lower reaches, whereas the River Swale drains a largely rural catchment, although there is a legacy of metal mining in its headwaters which impacts on heavy metal transport by the river. The results for the River Swale indicate that the conveyance losses associated with the deposition of sediment-associated contaminants on the floodplains bordering the main river can be as high as 47% of the total flux through the main channel system. Equivalent values for the River Aire range up to 26%. Contrasts between the two rivers reflect both the location of the contaminant sources within the catchments and the relative magnitude of the fine sediment deposition fluxes associated with their floodplains.  相似文献

In 1949 an area of undisturbed warm temperate rainforest (simple notophyll vine forest) in mid-north coastal New South Wales, Australia was studied in terms of both floristics and structure (Burges A. & Johnston R. D. J. Ecol. 41, 72-83, 1953). During 1955-56, the area in which the transect was located was logged. Over 90% of the upper closed canopy trees adjacent to the creek and on the lower slope and about 35% of canopy trees on the upper slope were removed. The area was reassessed in terms of floristics and structure in 1981. The greatest impact of logging in the study area was structural and largely confined to the flat adjacent to the creek and to the lower slope. With the exception of the remaining gaps covering 6% of the area, structural recovery time is estimated at 140-190 yr. In the gaps structural recovery may take up to 250 yr. All flowering plants, ferns and mosses previously recorded were present 25 yr after logging. The two alien plant species on the site are short lived intolerant species and gradually disappearing with canopy closure of the regenerating forest. The regeneration of the original tree species is healthy and vigorous with most regeneration resulting from the growth of advance regeneration present at the time of logging or the germination of new seedlings. Eleven per cent of the regeneration is attributable to coppicing. The importance of remnant canopy trees as a source of propagules for the trees and epiphytes is recognised. The larger openings are slower to recover as a result of lack of protection from frost. The stability of floristic composition of this area of warm temperate rainforest following heavy logging is demonstrated.  相似文献

1. Fine benthic organic matter (FBOM, particles <1 mm) was collected eight times in 1995 and 1996 from settling ponds located at the base of five catchments, and assayed for total C, N and P, extractable ammonium, mineralisable N, organic P, labile polysaccharides, denitrification potential, acetylene reduction and respiration rates, and β‐glucosidase and phosphatase activities. The five catchments (10–101 ha in size) are located in the Pacific North‐west of the United States. They contain either old‐growth forests dominated by Douglas‐fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) or stands that were harvested 30 years ago and replanted with Douglas‐fir, with riparian zones dominated by red alder (Alnus rubra), bigleaf and vine maple (Acer macrophyllum; A. circinatum) and understory herbaceous plants. 2. C : N ratios were significantly higher, and mineralisable N, extractable ammonium and labile polysaccharides were all significantly lower, in FBOM from old‐growth catchment sediment than in FBOM from catchments containing harvested stands, showing that the chemical characteristics of FBOM were influenced by forest harvest. C and N concentrations were greatest in sediment from old‐growth catchments, but microbial activities (respiration, denitrification potential, phosphatase and β‐glucosidase) tended to be greater in sediment from the harvested catchments. 3. Levels of certain chemical components of harvested‐catchment FBOM were elevated relative to those found in old growth; specifically, organic and total P, extractable ammonium, mineralisable N and labile polysaccharides, suggesting that stream FBOM from harvested basins is more biodegradable than stream FBOM from old‐growth basins. 4. In addition to effects of past timber harvest on FBOM characteristics, there were also significant seasonal differences in both logged and unlogged catchments in all variables except mineralisable N, labile polysaccharides and acetylene reduction rates. 5. The results indicate that past timber harvest in five river basins influenced both composition of and seasonal fluctuations in fine benthic organic matter (FBOM) collected from stream sediments in settling ponds, suggesting a linkage between forest harvest and stream productivity. 6. Comparisons between seasonal patterns in stream and settling pond sediment FBOM characteristics suggested that the readily decomposable organic matter entering sediments during a storm event are rapidly transported and decomposed during their movement through the catchment basin. It also showed the validity of studying settling pond sediments as a surrogate for mountain stream sediments.  相似文献
