We examined the roles of turgor potential and osmotic adjustment in plant growth by comparing the growth of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum cv. Siete cerrors) and sudangrass ( Sorghum vulgare var. Piper) seedlings in response to soil water and temperature stresses. The rates of leaf area expansion, leaf water potential and osmotic potential were measured at combinations of 5 soil water potentials ranging from −0.03 to −0.25 MPa and 6 soil temperatures ranging from 14 to 36°C. Spring wheat exhibited little osmotic adjustment while sudangrass exhibited a high degree of osmotic adjustment. However, the rate of leaf area growth for sudangrass was more sensitive to water stress than that of spring wheat. These results were used to evaluate the relationship between growth and turgor potential. The modified Arrhenius equation based on thermodynamic considerations of the growth process was evaluated. This equation obtains growth rate as a function of activation energy, enthalpy difference between active and inactive states of enzymes, base growth rate and optimum temperature. Analyses indicate that the modified Arrhenius equation is consistent with the Lockhart equation with a metabolically controlled cell wall extensibility.  相似文献

Effect of water potential on seed germination   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The response of seed germination to substrate water potential was determined for several plant species of the arctic tundra. Seeds were collected from Cape Thompson and Eagle Summit, Alaska and germinated on dialysis membranes over water solutions of polyethylene glycol with osmotic potentials of 0 to −6 bars. Germination did not occur with potentials below −3 bars, except for three fellfield species. Germination was delayed at lower osmotic potentials. Because the response of most species was similar, substrate water potential is probably not a factor affecting the establishment of most tundra plant species from seeds.  相似文献

Recent studies of Prosopis glandulosa have demonstrated a unique system of a deeply rooted species with significant water stress tolerance. Several growth and developmental characteristics have been correlated with water stress and nitrogen availability during field studies. Here we present a lab experiment in which a phreatophytic regime is simulated and the availability of nitrogen and water are varied. Increased ground water salinity caused lower plant water potentials and greater osmotic adjustment without significant increases in leaf Na+ concentrations. Leaf conductance was higher in the higher salinity treatments. Low water potential was also associated with reduced leaf size, reduced leaf area per plant and increased root to shoot ratio. Specific leaf weight and the transpiration ratio were unaffected by the low water potentials induced by increased salinity. Increasing nitrogen availability caused increased growth rates but did not influence water use efficiency. Net assimilation rates increased with increasing nitrogen availability but relative growth rates were more dependent on overall plant size than treatment conditions. The responses of P. glandulosa to the simulated phreatophytic environment were similar to those predicted by field measurements.  相似文献

The effect of plant status on net assimilation and translocation of "C-labeled assimilates in cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) was evaluated. As plant water potential (ψ) decreased from −0.5 to −1.0 MPa, neither net assimilation nor the rate of label translocation out of the l4CO,-fed leaf were affected, but as iji fell between −1.0 and −1.5 MPa, net assimilation decreased sharply and label retention increased greatly. Translocation out of source leaves was strongly correlated with net assimilation (r =−0.93). Translocation velocity, assessed by detection of labeled assimilates in sink leaves, was sensitive to plant water deficit, and it declined linearly (r = 0.97) throughout the range of leaf water potentials observed. The results may be explained by reduction in the velocity of assimilate movement within the sieve elements, reduction in supply of labeled assimilates from source leaves, reduction in sink strength or diversion of assimilates to sites of storage or utilization.  相似文献

Summary Themeda triandra Forsk., a medium height perennial grass common in semi-arid Africa, was collected from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, propagated vegetatively and grown in controlled environments simulating native conditions. The experiment demonstrated mechanisms that result in inability to withstand frequent defoliation, and thus how plant-herbivore interactions are affected by plant morpho-physiology. Clipping reduced most plant yield components. After two months leaf elongation rate was greater in clipped plants, but over the whole experiment aboveground yield was unaffected by clipping. Since clipping did not stimulate growth, residual leaf area was less in clipped plants. Tillering was not stimulated by clipping so there was no mechanism to increase leaf area below the clipping height. The resulting reduced leaf area accounted for reduced root and crown production by clipped plants.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal measurements of microclimatic conditions were compared to seasonal indices of leaf structural components and plant water relations in Prosopis glandulosa var. torryana. P. glandulosa had two short periods of leaf production which resulted in two distinct even aged cohorts of leaves. The two leaf cohorts (summer, winter) were concurrent in the summer and fall, contrasting to previous studies on other species in which one leaf form replaces a previous leaf type. The structural characteristics of these two cohorts differed significantly in two replicate year cycles. The leaves of the spring cohort were larger in weight and area but similar to the summer cohort in specific leaf weight and leaflet number. The second growth period leaves constituted only a small proportion of the total plant leaf area. The dimorphism between the two cohorts was best associated with plant water relations and not energy load. Second growth period leaves maintained turgor to greater water deficits but lost turgor at higher leaf water potentials. Seasonal osmotic adjustment occurred for first growth period leaves but not second growth period leaves. The small leaves produced during the hot climate were most likely the result of low turgor potential during development rather than an adaptation to tolerate stressful environments.  相似文献

Herbivory and resource interact to influence plant regrowth following grazing, but few detailed investigations on grazing tolerance at population levels are available. We conducted two pot experiments along a simulated grazing gradient (0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of shoot removal) at three water or nutrient levels to determine the interaction of resource and herbivory on Leymus chinensis, a perennial, dominant species in the eastern Eurasian steppes. Interactions between water availability and clipping intensity on the relative height growth rate (RHGR) and bud number were significant. Significant interactions between nutrient and clipping on RHGR, total biomass and specific leaf area (SLA) were also found. Total biomass and bud number, showing a unimodal curve along the clipping gradient in resource-rich environments, were highest at light clipping level, suggesting that this species has the plastic compensatory responses from under- to overcompensation. Interactions between herbivory and water or nutrient were opposite to each other. The “cooperative” interactions between water and herbivory magnified the difference in grazing tolerance of L. chinensis between high and low water treatments. The “antagonistic” interactions between nutrient and herbivory, on the other hand, were reflected in the lower tolerance to heavy clipping in the high nutrient than low nutrient treatments. Results partly support the limiting resource model (LRM). A modified and simplified graphic model of the LRM was proposed based on our results. The new LRM clearly demonstrated that “cooperative” interactions between varying water levels and clipping intensities aggravate the detrimental impacts of herbivores on plant growth and reproduction, whereas “antagonistic” interactions between nutrient and grazing alleviate the negative effects of herbivores. Biomass compensation and density compensation were identified as main mechanisms of herbivory tolerance in this clonal species.  相似文献

Summary The daily temperature and water relations of 7 perennial subalpine, understory species (1 shrub, 1 subshrub, 5 herbs) were compared in the Rocky Mountains of southeastern Wyoming with an emphasis on the effects of natural sun and shade exposure. Field measurements of rainfall; leaf, air, and soil temperatures; stomatal conductance to water vapor diffusion; and plant and soil water potentials were supplemented with leaf and root morphological measurements to evaluate potential adaptive patterns in understory species.Morphologically, all 7 species had relatively broad leaves that were hypostomous and bicolored with the abaxial leaf surface lighter than the abaxial surface. Root systems tended to be shallow (<20 cm), especially for the herbaceous species. Although soil water potentials from 4 to 40 cm depths remained relatively high throughout the summer (>-1.0 MPa), plant xylem water potentials for sunlit plants decreased to below-2.0 MPa during midday. During these sunlit periods, leaf temperatures and conductances increased substantially, leading to severe wilting for 4 of the 5 herbaceous species. Stomatal conductance and density for 6 of the 7 species monitored were much greater on abaxial compared to adaxial leaf sides and substantial stomatal closure occurred when either leaf side was oriented to receive direct sunlight. Moreover, stomatal opening on abaxial leaf sides corresponded to the amount of sunlight incident upon the adaxial rather than abaxial leaf surfaces. The 2 shrubby species did not wilt during these periods and were characterized by the highest leaf temperatures (>30°C). These 2 species also had consistantly lower xylem water potentials throughout the summer growth period. These results are discussed in terms of the possible adaptive significance of midday wilting, leaf hypostomy and bicoloration and stomatal behavior to the water and photosynthetic relations of understory species.  相似文献

The growth of the snow mould fungi Fusarium nivale (Fr.) Ces. and Typhula ishikariensis Imai at different water potentials was measured on potato dextrose broth supplemented with KCl or polyethylene glycol 6000. The dew point hygrometer method was used for determination of water potentials in both artificial growth media and plant material. Both fungi had a considerable decrease in dry weight production when water potentials of growth media were decreased from −0.7 to −3 MPa. Crown tissue from hardened plants of Phleum pratense L. (timothy, cvs Engmo, Grindstad) and Phalaris arundinacea L. (reed canary grass, cvs Hansvoll, American common, Vantage) showed a significant decrease in water potentials compared with unhardened plants. Thus, reduced availability of water may partly explain increased resistance to fungal pathogens in grasses after hardening.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine if two species of sunflower, Helianthus annus L. cv. Hysun 31 (cultivated, single-stemmed genotype) and Helianthus petiolaris Nuttall ssp. fallax (wild, many-hranched genotype) differed in the response of leaf growth to water deficits. Earlier published studies, concerned only with H. annuus, failed to reveal differences in the response of sunflowers to water stress. Plants of the two species were paired in large containers of soil and grown under high radiation in a glasshouse. One batch of plants was irrigated and the other allowed to dry so that predawn leaf water potentials declined at an average of 0.072 MPa day?1. The dry batch was rewatered when predawn leaf water potentials reached ?0.85 MPa. The stress imposed was sufficient to curtail leaf growth so that plants in the dry treatment had only 60% of the leaf area of irrigated plants at the onset of rewatering. Both species were affected by stress to the same relative extent, though their leaf areas at this stage differed 7-fold. Both genotypes also recovered to the same degree in the long term, finally having leaf areas and gross dry matter distribution patterns which were indistinguishable from plants which were irrigated throughout. However, water stress resulted in different distribution patterns of leaf area: H. annuus produced larger leaves at the top of its single stem which compensated for the reduced area in lower leaves, whereas H. petiolaris compensated in the leaves on its branches. Leaves which emerged after the time of stress were most able to compensate in area subsequently. For example, those leaves of H. annuus which emerged one week after stress-relief were more than three times larger than comparable leaves on plants irrigated continuously. Leaf expansion rates were affected earlier in the stress cycle than leaf conductance in H. annuus, but not in H. petiolaris. But as with other plant responses to water stress, the differences between the two species were small.  相似文献

Measurements of the growth of sainfoin and lucerne were madein the field after cutting on 31 May 1977. Sainfoin reacheda total above-ground dry weight of 408 g m–2 over thegrowing period of 48 days compared with 598 g m–2 in lucerne.Final leaf area indices (LAIs) were 2.8 in sainfoin and 6.1in lucerne. The specific leaf areas (SLAs) for sainfoin wereapproximately half those of lucerne throughout the regrowthperiod. The maximum rates of leaf appearance were 0.12 leavesper day in sainfoin and 0.85 leaves per day in lucerne. Themaximum mean rate of plant extension growth for lucerne of 2.12mm h–1 occurred during the night, whereas, in sainfointhe maximum rate of 1.72 mm h–1 occurred during the day. Measurements of extinction coefficients for PAR ranged from0.45 to 0.89 in sainfoin and from 0 42 to 0.57 in lucerne. Asthe lucerne crop increased in size leaf water potentials andsolute potentials became more negative. In sainfoin leaf waterpotentials remained remarkably high throughout the growth period, solute potentials decreased and turgor potentials increased. The stomatal conductances of the two species were similar. The photosynthetic capacities and rates of dark respirationper unit leaf area in both species were similar. The rate ofcanopy ‘gross’ photosynthesis at 295 W m–2was always greater in lucerne than in sainfoin. This was largelya matter of differences between the species in LAI, althoughat higher LAIs the more erect structure of lucerne leads toa better utilization of photosynthetically active radiation. The growth and development of soybeans (Glycine max L. cv. Amsoy) was studied at soil matric potentials of ?0.1 to ?1.0 bars. Chlorophyll, photosynthesis, and leaf nitrogen per plant was greatest at ?4 bars leaf water potential. Leaf area, number of internodes, plant height and dry weight of vegetative parts declined as leaf water potential decreased from ?2 to ?19 bars. Nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity per g fresh weight determined the percentage protein of individual seeds but nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity per plant determined the amount of total seed protein. The protein synthesized in the seed changed little in amino acid composition with changes in leaf water potential. Leaf water potentials above or below ?4 bars decreased yield, total protein and total lipid but plants produced the largest percentage of individual seed protein at ?19 bars leaf water potential.  相似文献

Changes in leaf hydraulic conductance (K) were measured using the vacuum chamber technique during dehydration and rehydration of potted plants of Ceratonia siliqua . K of whole, compound leaves as well as that of rachides and leaflets decreased by 20–30% at leaf water potentials (ΨL) of −1.5 and −2.0 MPa, i.e. at ΨL values commonly recorded in field-growing plants of the species. Higher K losses (up to 50%) were measured for leaves at ΨL of −2.5 and −3.0 MPa, i.e. near or beyond the leaf turgor loss point. Leaves of plants rehydrated while in the dark for 30 min, 90 min and 12 h recovered from K loss with characteristic times and to extents inversely proportional to the initial water stress applied. Leaf conductance to water vapour of plants dehydrated to decreasing ΨL and rehydrated at low transpiration was inversely related to loss of K, thus suggesting that leaf vein embolism and refilling (and related changes in leaf hydraulics) may play a significant role in the stomatal response.  相似文献

We examined the effects of leaf herbivory by the dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas, on the compensatory growth of the geophyte Pancratium sickenbergeri (Amaryllidaceae) in the Negev desert, Israel. In three populations exposed to different levels of herbivory, we removed different amounts of photosynthetic leaf area from plants in five clipping treatments: 0, 25, 50%-dispersed over all leaves, 50%-entire area of half the leaves, 100%. The population with the lowest level of herbivory showed the lowest relative regrowth rate after clipping. In the population with a constantly high level of herbivory, plants in intermediate-clipping treatments overcompensated in leaf area after clipping. For all the populations, clipped plants produce more new leaves than unclipped plants. In the population with the highest level of herbivory, clipping treatments did not have a significant effect on the number of fruits per plant. In addition, we did not find a trade-off between investments in growth and reproduction in this population. Our results indicated that, in the desert lily, herbivores may select for plant mechanisms that compensate after damage as a tolerant strategy to maintain fitness.  相似文献

A glasshouse experiment was conducted to examine how the interactions of nutrient availability and partial ramet clipping affect growth, reproduction and biomass allocation of Cyperus esculentus, an invasive sedge. The plants sprouting from tubers were grown at low and high nutrient levels, and were subject either to no clipping, one, two or three clippings, with each clipping cutting half of the existing ramets at soil level. Our results show that nutrient availability and clipping frequency tended to independently affect most of growth, reproduction and biomass allocation parameters of Cyperus esculentus examined in the present study. Increased supply of nutrients led to an increase in plant productivity and its associated traits. All of the traits, except for the number of ramets, displayed a decreasing pattern with increasing clipping frequency, indicating that Cyperus esculentus had undercompensatory responses to ramet clipping. It is likely that the patterns of plants response to clipping are species specific, and depend on morphological characters of species. Its susceptibility to ramet clipping can offer opportunities for controlling this invasive species through mechanical methods such as mowing. Clipping had little effects on biomass allocation; however, root weight fraction increased with increasing clipping frequency. While nutrient availability and clipping frequency had no influence on leaf carbon concentration at harvest, both of them increased leaf nitrogen concentration, and hence reduced leaf C/N ratio.  相似文献

Plants of Acacia and Eucalyptus species were grown under differentlevels of shading, nutrition, and irrigation to assess the effectof these factors on plant water use. Water use per unit of leaf(phyllode) area was affected only by the irrigation treatment, control plants that had received water daily using appreciablymore water than plants that had been repeatedly subjected towater stress. Water stress conditioning had little or no effecton plant height, leaf (phyllode) area, or minimum stomatal resistancein any of the species. Detailed study of the water stress conditioningof Eucalyptus robusta showed that controls used 46% more waterthan conditioned plants. Leaf area and plant height were unaffectedby conditioning. Control of transpiration was not due to stomatalfunctioning, both sets of plants operating with the same leafdiffusive resistance under conditions of ready water availability.Hydraulic conductivity of the intact root system was loweredby conditioning and it is suggested that this was due, at leastin part, to the effect that conditioning had on root xylem conductivity.Specific conductivity of stem sections was lowered by waterstress conditioning. Water stress avoidance was also associatedwith a more pronounced tendency for stomata to close prior towilting and with a higher level of leaf resistance which couldbe maintained at a low leaf water potential. Conditioned plantsexhibited drought tolerance in their ability to control lossof water from the leaf at lower leaf water potentials than thecontrols.  相似文献

Reduced plant water potential, induced by polyethylene glycol in hydroponics, inhibited growth and decreased the number of leaves per branch in the southern California drought-deciduous species Lotus scoparius (Nutt. in T & G) Ottley. Decreasing plant water potential diminished the proportion of large leaves per branch and therefore reduced the leaf area. Nitrate uptake rate decreased with decreasing water potential, although the nitrate ion concentration increased in the roots and the leaves. Ammonium ion concentration increased significantly in the roots at −5 bars and lower osmotic potentials in the root medium. Kjeldahl nitrogen remained the same in all treatments and tissues over the experimental period. It is suggested that the increase in ammonium ion in the roots was due to a decreased rate of ammonium transport caused by low plant water potential. The slight increase in nitrate ion in the roots may correspond to a decrease in nitrate reductase activity. This study indicates that some of the changes in nitrogen metabolism associated with low water potentials in agricultural plants occur also in a plant which experiences frequent droughts in its native habitat.  相似文献

Summary Pressure volume curves were measured with a pressure bomb in leaves collected in the field from Ilex opaca, Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, Liriodendron tulipifera and Cornus florida. Water potential components were calculated from the curves. The species differed in the relationships measured. In all species the trends from summer to fall were toward lower (more negative) osmotic potentials, lower matric potentials more rapid loss of turgor with increasing leaf water deficit, and the occurrence of incipient plasmolysis at lower values of leaf water deficit. Initial osmotic potentials ranged from-14.8 to-19.8 bars, similar to values reported in the literature for other mesophytic plants. These values, however, were much higher than those reported for halophytes and xerophytes. The fraction of leaf water which contributes to the osmotic potential ranged from 0.74 to 0.98 in this study. Values reported for other mesophytes and for halophytes and xerophytes all fall well within this range. Patterns of component water potentials are discussed in relation to potential growth rates and water flow in the total plant system.  相似文献

Summary Canopy development and photosynthetic rate were measured at monthly intervals over a period of one year in 19 shrub and subshrub species of the Mojave and upper Sonoran Deserts. Thirteen of these species realized a substantial fraction of their total net carbon assimilation via twig photosynthesis. The twig contribution to whole plant yearly carbon gain reached a maximum of 83% in species such as Thamnosma montana, Salizaria mexicana, and Baccharis brachyphylla. This large contribution by twigs was due to both low levels of leaf production and the greater longevity of twig tissues. In some other species, however, leaf and twig organs had similar lifespans. During the year of this study (which had an unusually warm, mild winter), no species showed a pattern of winter deciduousness. The reduction in total photosynthetic area between maximal spring canopy development and mid August summer dormancy ranged from 32 to 94%. Some herbaceous perennial species died back to the ground, but none of the woody shrubs were totally without green canopy area at any time of the year. No species studied were capable of high rates of photosynthesis at low plant water potentials in July and August, but, in those species which maintained a substantial canopy area through the drought period, previously stressed tissues showed substantial recovery after fall rains. Photosynthetic rate was significantly correlated with both plant water potential and tissue nitrogen content over the entire year, but only weakly so. This is due in part to the winter months when plant water potentials and tissue nitrogen contents were high, but photosynthetic rates were often low.  相似文献

Fitness of individual plants and of populations depends on the rates of survival, growth and fecundity. This study tested whether vital rates were differentially affected by biotic interactions and water availability. The effects of manipulations of above-ground competition (through clipping) and water availability (through water addition) on the vital rates of seedlings of three species (Viola elatior Fries, Viola pumila Chaix and Viola stagnina Kit.) were analysed in dry, mesic and wet grasslands. Water addition and grassland type had the largest effects on survival (accounting for 41 and 24% of total variation, respectively) across species. Height growth rate was positively affected by grassland type (19%) and water addition (12%) and varied among species (8%), while leaf accumulation rates and reproduction were affected by grassland type and clipping. The data suggested facilitative effects of the canopy on seedling survival in the dry grassland. This study presents evidence that environmental conditions and biotic interactions may have differential effects on seedling survival, growth and reproduction. The findings highlight the complex interplay between spatial and temporal environmental variation and biotic interactions in structuring plant communities.  相似文献
