In order to study the characteristics of neoteny in teleosts, development of the thyroid system and digestive tract of a neotenic goby (ice goby, Leucopsarion petersii) and a non-neotenic goby (ukigori, Gymnogobius urotaenia) were compared. In juvenile ukigori, the intestine was found to be convoluted once in the antero-midpart, and gastric glands were present. In the ice goby, the alimentary canal was straight, and no gastric gland was observed even in adult, suggesting that the ice goby retains larval features, not only in appearance but also in internal organs. A marked difference was also found in the thyroid system. In ukigori, activity of the thyroid gland and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) cells increased between flexion and postflexion larval phases. However, in the ice goby, thyroid glands remained inactive, and no TSH cells were observed. A delayed development of the thyroid system was suggested as a major factor contributing to neoteny in the ice goby.  相似文献

Since thyroid hormones play a pivotal role in amphibian metamorphosis we used PCR to amplify DNA fragments corresponding to a portion of the ligand-binding domain of the thyroid hormone receptor (TR) genes in several neotenic amphibians: the obligatory neotenic members of the family Proteidea the mudpuppy Necturus maculosus and Proteus anguinus as well as two members of the facultative neotenic Ambystoma genus: the axolotl Ambystoma mexicanum and the tiger salamander Ambystoma tigrinum. In addition, we looked for TR genes in the genome of an apode Typhlonectes compressicaudus. TR genes were found in all these species including the obligatory neotenic ones. The PCR fragments obtained encompass both the C and E domains and correspond to α and β genes. Their sequences appear to be normal, suggesting that there is no acceleration of evolutionary rates in the TR genes of neotenic amphibians. This result is not surprising for Ambystomatidae, which are known to respond to T3 (3,3′,5-triiodothyronine) but is not in agreement with biochemical and biological data showing that Proteidea cannot respond to thyroid hormones. Interestingly, by RT-PCR analysis we observed a high expression levels of TRα in gills, intestine, and muscles of Necturus as well as in the liver of Ambystoma mexicanum, whereas TRβ expression was only detected in Ambystoma mexicanum but not in Necturus. Such a differential expression pattern of TRα and TRβ may explain the neoteny in Proteidea. The cloning of thyroid-hormone-receptor gene fragments from these species will allow the molecular study of their failure to undergo metamorphosis. Comparison of metamorphosis of skull and hyobranchial system in two species of neotenic salamanders reveals two different types of neoteny. Ambystoma talpoideum is completely neotenic owing to delayed metamorphosis. Notophthalmus viridescens exhibits limited neoteny as a result of incomplete metamorphosis. Morphological details of neoteny are compared to life history in both species in order to discuss the ecological morphology of the two neotenic strategies. Comparisons to Taricha granulosa, Triturus vulgaris, and Ambystoma gracile indicate that these two strategies are widely employed and may represent familial patterns.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thiourea (TU) on the metamorphosis of tarpon Megalops cryprinoides leptocephali. TU is an anti-thyroid hormone drug that inhibits the production of T4 and T3 in the thyroid tissue. Fully grown tarpons leptocephali were collected at the river mouth and, in the laboratory, were immediately treated with 100 ppb T4, 10 ppb T3, or 300 ppm TU. The appropriate concentrations were validated in a preliminary dose response experiment. Morphological and physiological characteristics that indicate metamorphic processes were measured every 2 days. T4 and T3 slightly speeded up the metamorphosis of tarpons compared with the control group. The experimental treatments produced accelerated reductions in length, increases in head/body ratio, swimbladder development, and loss of body water and sodium. In contrast, TU treatment caused metamorphic stasis with complete inhibition of metamorphosis between days 6 and 8. Thyroid hormone treatment stimulated fast otolith growth while TU treatment stopped otolith growth between days 6 and 9. Leptocephali in T4, T3 and control groups completed metamorphosis in 10-14 days, but TU-treated tarpons remained in the metamorphic leptocephalus stage more than 22 days. In addition, the inhibition of leptocephalus metamorphosis by 300 ppm TU can be reversed in the presence of 10 ppb T3. These results indicate that thyroid hormones are involved in regulating the metamorphosis of leptocephali.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential benefit of combined treatment with zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) in reversing cadmium (Cd)-induced thyroid dysfunction compared to Se or Zn treatment alone in rats exposed to Cd. For this purpose, 30 adult male Wistar albino rats were equally divided into control and four treated groups receiving either 200 ppm Cd (as CdCl2), 200 ppm Cd + 500 ppm Zn (as ZnCl2), 200 ppm Cd + 0.1 ppm Se (as Na2SeO3), or 200 ppm Cd + 500 ppm Zn + 0.1 ppm Se in their drinking water for 35 days. The results showed that Cd exposure increased significantly the relative thyroid weight (RTW), the thyroid Cd concentration, and the serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level, whereas the serum thyroxine (T4) level was decreased compared to control rats. The treatment of Cd-exposed rats with Se alone only partially protected from the Cd-induced decrease in serum T4 level. The treatment of Cd-exposed animals with Zn alone partially protected against Cd-induced thyroid dysfunction by maintaining normal RTW and by decreasing Cd concentration in the thyroid. It also partially prevents Cd-induced decrease in serum T4 level. The combined treatment of Cd-exposed animals with Se and Zn induced a more significant decrease in the thyroid Cd concentration than the Zn supplement and a total correction of the RTW. This treatment was also more effective than that with Se or Zn alone in reversing Cd-induced decrease in serum T4 level and Cd-induced increase in serum TSH level. Se and Zn can have a synergistic role against Cd-induced thyroid dysfunction.  相似文献

The effects of thyroid manipulation on growth, feed efficiency, and plasma hormone levels were determined in rapidly growing chickens. Beginning at 3 weeks of age, eight broiler cockerels were provided with control feed (CF) or feed containing either 1 ppm of triiodothyronine (T3), 1 ppm of thyroxine (T4), 0.3% propylthiouracil (PTU), or 5 ppm of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) for 3 weeks. Blood samples were taken at 4, 5, and 6 weeks for determination of plasma levels of growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor, T3, T4, insulin, glucagon, glucose, and nonesterified fatty acids. Dietary TRH increased (P less than 0.05) the growth rate of chickens by 14% when compared with the CF group. Plasma growth hormone levels were reduced (P less than 0.05) 65% by dietary T3 and 33% by treatment with either T4 or TRH when compared with the CF group. Plasma insulin-like growth factor levels were 16% lower (P less than 0.05) in PTU-fed birds than the other treatment groups. Plasma T3 levels were elevated (P less than 0.05) 3-fold by dietary T3 and 38% by TRH whereas plasma T3 in the PTU group was 38% below the average of CF birds. Plasma T4 levels were increased (P less than 0.05) by 12-fold in T4-fed birds, decreased 48% in TRH-fed birds, and nondetectable in birds treated with either T3 or PTU. Compared with the other treatments, dietary PTU increased (P less than 0.01) plasma insulin levels 4.3-fold whereas TRH provided a 2.7-fold increase in plasma insulin. Plasma glucagon levels were 26% higher (P less than 0.05) in T3-fed birds than those fed either T4 or PTU. These observations indicate that thyroid activity plays an important role in regulating secretion of GH and the pancreatic hormones. Furthermore, our study demonstrates the potential use of TRH as an orally active growth promoter for poultry.  相似文献

The systematic position of the enigmatic Asiatic liverwort Metzgeriopsis pusilla (Marchantiophyta), the single thalloid member of the largest family of leafy liverworts, Lejeuneaceae, was investigated based on sequences of the rbc L gene and the trn L-F region of chloroplast DNA, and morphology. Metzgeriopsis is not phylogenetically isolated from other taxa of Lejeuneaceae, as previously suggested, but is nested within Cololejeunea . The two genera share many morphological features, especially in the sporophyte generation, which is newly described. Metzgeriopsis and Cololejeunea are members of the Tuyamaella – Cololejeunea clade, characterized by neotenic features that probably evolved as adaptations to ephemeral habitats in tropical rain forests. Three different types of neoteny occur in this clade, which apparently originated by multiple heterochronic events. Within Lejeuneaceae, protonemal neoteny is unique to Metzgeriopsis and apparently resulted by evolution from a primary neotenic ancestor. The occurrence of protonemal neoteny in bryophytes is briefly reviewed and two types are recognized: species having a persistent thalloid protonema and species having a persistent filamentous protonema. The thalloid type is very rare and exclusive to epiphyllous liverworts, whereas the filamentous type is much more common and is characteristic of many terrestrial bryophytes, including the rare genus Protocephalozia . The new combination Cololejeunea metzgeriopsis (K.I.Goebel) comb. nov. is proposed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 293–308.  相似文献

Dispersal, one of the most important processes in population ecology, is an issue linking physiological and behavioral features. However, the endocrine control of animal dispersal remains poorly understood. Here, we tested whether and how thyroid hormones may influence dispersal in glass eels of Anguilla anguilla, by testing their influence on locomotor activity and rheotactic behavior. Glass eels were caught during their estuarine migration and treated by immersion in either a l-thyroxine (T(4)) or a thiourea (TU) solution. As measured by radioimmunoassay, T(4) and TU treatments induced, respectively, increased and decreased whole-body thyroid hormone levels relative to untreated controls. We tested a total of 960 glass eels distributed into control, and T(4) and TU treatment groups, on their swimming behavior in experimental flume tanks equipped with upstream and downstream traps that allowed us to concurrently measure both the locomotor activity and the rheotactic behavior. Compared to controls, locomotor activity significantly increased among the hyperthyroid, T(4)-treated eels, but significantly decreased among the hypothyroid, TU-treated eels. The results on rheotactic behavior suggested a more complex regulatory mechanism, since TU but not T(4) treatment significantly affected rheotactic behavior. The influence of thyroid hormones on locomotor activity suggests a central role for these hormones in the regulation of mechanisms leading to the colonization of continental habitats by glass eels. Thyroid hormones are also implicated in the control of locomotor activity in mammals and migratory behavior in birds, suggesting that these hormones represent conserved, proximate mediators of dispersal in vertebrates.  相似文献

Male reproductive phenotypic plasticity related to environmental-social conditions is common among teleost fish. In several species, males adopt different mating tactics depending on their size, monopolizing mates when larger, while parasitizing dominant male spawns when smaller. Males performing alternative mating tactics are often characterized by a strong dimorphism in both primary and secondary reproductive traits. According to studies on sex-changing species and on species where only one male morph is reproductively active, male alternative phenotypes are expected to vary also in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in forebrain preoptic area (POA). Here, we compared the intra- and inter-sexual variations in number and size of GnRH neurons, along with gonads and male accessory structure investment, in two goby species, the grass goby, Zosterisessor ophiocephalus, and the black goby, Gobius niger, characterized by male alternative mating phenotypes. In both species, older and larger males defend nests, court and perform parental care, while younger and smaller ones try to sneak territorial male spawning. We found that grass goby and black goby have different patterns of GnRH expression. Grass goby presents a clear intra-sexual dimorphism in GnRH expression, related to the occurrence of alternative mating tactics, while in the black goby, only inter-sexual differences are observed. The inter- and intra-specific variability in the GnRH neurons in these two goby species is discussed in light of the differences in migratory behavior, nest type, and mating system.  相似文献

Metamorphosis is a most dramatic example of hormonally regulated genetic reprogramming during postembryonic development. The initiation and sustenance of the process are under the control of ecdysteroids in invertebrates and thyroid hormone, 3,3', 5-triiodothyronine, in oviparous vertebrates. Their actions are inhibited or potentiated by other endogenous or exogenous hormones - juvenile hormone in invertebrates and prolactin and glucocorticoids in vertebrates. The nuclear receptors for ecdysteroids and thyroid hormone are the most closely related members of the steroid/retinoid/thyroid hormone receptor supergene family. In many pre-metamorphic amphibia and insects, the onset of natural metamorphosis and the administration of the exogenous hormones to the early larvae are characterized by a substantial and rapid autoinduction of the respective nuclear receptors. This review will largely deal with the phenomenon of receptor autoinduction during amphibian metamorphosis, although many of its features resemble those in insect metamorphosis. In the frog Xenopus, thyroid hormone receptor autoinduction has been shown to be brought about by the direct interaction between the receptor protein and the thyroid-responsive elements in the promoter of its own gene. Three lines of evidence point towards the involvement of receptor autoinduction in the process of initiation of amphibian metamorphosis: (1) a close association between the extent of inhibition or potentiation by prolactin and glucocorticoid, respectively, and metamorphic response in whole tadpoles and in organ and cell cultures; (2) thyroid hormone fails to upregulate the expression of its own receptor in obligatorily neotenic amphibia but does so in facultatively neotenic amphibia; and (3) dominant-negative receptors known to block hormonal response prevent the autoinduction of wild-type Xenopus receptors in vivo and in cell lines.Autoinduction is not restricted to insect and amphibian metamorphic hormones but is also a characteristic of other nuclear receptors (e.g., retinoid, sex steroids, vitamin D(3) receptors) where the ligand is involved in a postembryonic developmental function. A wider significance of such receptor autoregulation is that the process may also be important for mammalian postembryonic development.  相似文献

In adult Anuran and neotenic Urodela, bred in laboratory conditions, the levels of plasma thyroid hormones are undetectable (T3 less than 50 ng/100 ml, T4 less than 5 ng/100 ml). Thyroid function can be reactivated after ovine TSH treatment. Under those conditions, metamorphosis is induced in the axolotl and T4 plasmatic levels reaches 0,53 +/- 0,13 micrograms/100 ml and those of T3 9 +/- 2,64 ng/100 ml. In adult Anuran, thyroid reactivation under thyrotropic treatment determines an increased secretion of T4 whereas T3 remains below the limits of detection of the assay procedure. This aptitude of adult Anuran thyroid to answer thyrotropic stimulation suggests a cyclic function of the gland after metamorphosis.  相似文献

In this study correlations between body size and muscle fatty and amino acid content of two species of goby, round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and monkey goby (Neogobius fluviatilis) caught from river Rhine (Germany) were investigated. Among saturated fatty acids (SFAs), mono- (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) only SFAs were significantly higher in round goby than monkey goby (P < 0.05). In general, the correlation between body size of both gobies and the content of most of the individual fatty acids was not significant. In monkey goby, the content of palmitic acid (C16:0) and oleic acid (C18:1 n-9) was positively correlated with weight (r = 0.43) and total length (r = ?0.58), respectively, and the content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increased with condition factor (r = 0.50). The content of threonine, arginine, valine, phenylalanine and isoleucine in monkey goby was higher than those of round goby (P < 0.05). In round goby the three essential amino acids arginine, valine and leucine were positively (P < 0.05) correlated with body length, which indicates that longer round gobies are of higher nutritional value.  相似文献

The Italian goby Gobius nigricans is a running-water-dwelling species inhabiting the Tuscano-Latium district and threatened by several human activities. Many aspects of its biology are currently unknown, such as the dynamic potentialities. Since age determination and dynamic assessment are considered an important tool for a correct management strategy, we aimed to investigate some aspects of the Italian goby life history by applying the fish stock assessment principles, collecting data on fertility, population structure (age-class number), growth (i.e., curvature parameter and asymptotic length), mortality (natural and due to the fishing), and longevity of a central Italian goby population to know the status and dynamic properties of the Italian goby in Mediterranean river systems and to provide a baseline for comparison with other populations. Females are subject to a strong selective pressure to quickly reach a small size to optimize reproductive output, while acquisition of a large size favored males for a more easy access to breeder females (the asymptotic length was higher in males than in females). Moreover, appreciable between-sex differences were found in both growth pattern (the growth rate was lower in females than in males) and dynamic potentialities. In particular, the mortality rate was lower in females, whereas the longevity was slightly lower in males, although the two sexes showed similar values for the two latter properties. There is considerable scope for further work on the G. nigricans growth and other freshwater gobies because information on population and dynamic properties, and assessment of factors affecting growth are still very insufficient. We coupled bioenergetics modeling with bottom trawl survey results to evaluate the capacity of piscivorous fish in eastern Lake Erie to exert predatory control of the invading population of round goby Neogobius melanostomus. In the offshore (>20 m deep) waters of eastern Lake Erie, burbot Lota lota is a native top predator, feeding on a suite of prey fishes. The round goby invaded eastern Lake Erie during the late 1990s, and round goby population size increased dramatically during 1999–2004. According to annual bottom trawl survey results, round goby abundance in offshore waters peaked in 2004, but then declined during 2004–2008. Coincidentally, round goby became an important component of burbot diet beginning in 2003. Using bottom trawling and gill netting, we estimated adult burbot abundance and age structure in eastern Lake Erie during 2007. Diet composition and energy density of eastern Lake Erie burbot were also determined during 2007. This information, along with estimates of burbot growth, burbot mortality, burbot water temperature regime, and energy densities of prey fish from the literature, were incorporated into a bioenergetics model application to estimate annual consumption of round goby by the adult burbot population. Results indicated that the adult burbot population in eastern Lake Erie annually consumed 1,361 metric tons of round goby. Based on the results of bottom trawling, we estimated the biomass of yearling and older round goby in offshore waters eastern Lake Erie during 2007–2008 to be 2,232 metric tons. Thus, the adult burbot population was feeding on round goby at an annual rate equal to 61% of the estimated round goby standing stock. We concluded that the burbot population had high potential to exert predatory control on round goby in offshore waters of eastern Lake Erie.  相似文献

The beetle family Lampyridae (fireflies) encompasses ~100 genera worldwide with considerable diversity in life histories and signaling modes. Some lampyrid males use reproductive accessory glands to produce spermatophores, which have been shown to increase female lifetime fecundity. Sexual dimorphism in the form of neotenic and flightless females is also common in this family. A major goal of this study was to test a hypothesized link between female flight ability and male spermatophore production. We examined macroevolutionary patterns to test for correlated evolution among different levels of female neoteny (and associated loss of flight ability), male accessory gland number (and associated spermatophore production), and sexual signaling mode. Trait reconstruction on a molecular phylogeny indicated that flying females and spermatophores were ancestral traits and that female neoteny increased monotonically and led to flightlessness within multiple lineages. In addition, male spermatophore production was lost multiple times. Our evolutionary trait analysis revealed significant correlations between increased female neoteny and male accessory gland number, as well as between flightlessness and spermatophore loss. In addition, female flightlessness was positively correlated with the use of glows as female sexual signal. Transition probability analysis supported an evolutionary sequence of female flightlessness evolving first, followed by loss of male spermatophores. These results contribute to understanding how spermatophores have evolved and how this important class of seminal nuptial gifts is linked to other traits, providing new insights into sexual selection and life-history evolution.  相似文献

Twenty male buffalo calves (15 months, 200.2 ± 9.75) were divided into four groups of five animals in each and fed diets without (T1) or supplemented with 0.3 ppm selenium (Se) + 40 ppm zinc (Zn) (T2), 0.3 ppm Se + 40 ppm Zn + 10 ppm copper (Cu) (T3), and 40 ppm Zn + 10 ppm Cu (T4) for 120 days, during which blood samples were collected on days 0, 40, 80, and 120. Concentrations of glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, uric acid, and creatinine were similar in all the four groups. The level of different serum enzymes viz. lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, and hormones viz. T3, T4, testosterone and insulin were similar (P > 0.05) among the four groups but the ratio of T4/T3 was reduced (P < 0.05) in the groups (T2 and T3) where selenium was supplemented at 120th day of supplementation. It was deduced that supplementation of 0.3 ppm Se and/or 10.0 ppm of Cu with 40 ppm Zn had no effect on blood metabolic profile in buffalo calves, except the ratio of T4 and T3 hormone which indicates that selenium plays an important role in converting T4 hormone to T3 which is more active form of thyroid hormone.  相似文献

The ontogenetic sequence of cranial osteogenesis through adulthood is described in samples of newts from completely metamorphosing and partially neotenic populations. Cranial ossification proceeds in the same sequence in both samples. Seven stages of cranial development are described on the basis of conspicuous events that occur during ontogeny. These include four larval stages, metamorphs, efts, and adults. Neotenic adults have skulls that are metamorphosed completely and indistinguishable from the skulls of non-neotenic adults. Neoteny in these newts does not involve the skull and is limited to the postmetamorphic retention of some gill structures and, thus, is termed "limited neoteny." The evolution of limited neoteny in newts as a correlated response to the inhibition of land-drive behavior is discussed.  相似文献
