The spatial distributions and associations of plant species in a stand can provide essential information about their dynamics. However, since tree spatial distribution and association depend on factors that operate at different scales, disentangling the effects of environmental heterogeneity and plant–plant interactions requires the choice of a suitable null model for spatial analysis. We analyzed the spatial distributions of the same savanna palm tree populations that were studied, the underlying hypothesis being that these distributions have changed in 20 years. To remove the effect of large-scale environmental heterogeneity, the inhomogeneous L-function under the heterogeneous Poisson null model was used. We showed: (i) unlike 20 years ago, adults had a regular distribution instead of an aggregated distribution in the grass savanna; (ii) although the spatial distribution of seedlings and juveniles was always aggregated, we observed a decrease in the size of the aggregates (intensities); (iii) except for juveniles, no other stages were associated with nutrient-rich patches, which was also different 20 years ago; (iv) we did not observe any particular difference in structure between two study sites, only that female palm trees were spatially associated with entire-leafed seedlings in the reserve while they were spatially independent in the rural area. Our study supports the hypothesis that the spatial distributions have partially changed, and that the management of spatial heterogeneity has improved and given more precision in the results.  相似文献

A precise inference of past demographic histories including dating of demographic events using bayesian methods can only be achieved with the use of appropriate molecular rates and evolutionary models. Using a set of 596 mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequences of two sister species of European green crabs of the genus Carcinus (C. maenas and C. aestuarii), our study shows how chronologies of past evolutionary events change significantly with the application of revised molecular rates that incorporate biogeographic events for calibration and appropriate demographic priors. A clear signal of demographic expansion was found for both species, dated between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, which places the expansions events in a time frame following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In the case of C. aestuarii, a population expansion was only inferred for the Adriatic-Ionian, suggestive of a colonization event following the flooding of the Adriatic Sea (18,000 years ago). For C. maenas, the demographic expansion inferred for the continental populations of West and North Europe might result from a northward recolonization from a southern refugium when the ice sheet retreated after the LGM. Collectively, our results highlight the importance of using adequate calibrations and demographic priors in order to avoid considerable overestimates of evolutionary time scales.  相似文献

Summary The C3 phenotype distribution was studied in 4 different populations from Afghanistan. The gene frequencies of C3s allele were: Tajiks (0.8547), Pushtoons (0.8812), Hazaras (0.9036) and Osbeks (0.8530). These values were significantly higher than in European populations studied previously. No significant differences were found between the mean serum levels of C3, C4 and C3-proactivator among 4 population groups. A higher concentration of IgG, IgA and IgM was observed in Afghanistan sera than reported for Europeans.Supported by the Stiftung Volkswagenwerk.Dedicated to Prof. J. Because of its small and well-characterized nervous system and amenability to genetic manipulation, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans offers the promise of understanding the mechanisms underlying a whole animal's behavior at the molecular and cellular levels. In fact, this goal was a primary motivation behind the development of C. elegans as an experimental organism 40 years ago. Yet it has proven surprisingly difficult to obtain a mechanistic understanding of how the C. elegans nervous system generates behavior, despite the existence of a 'wiring diagram' that contains a degree of information about neural connectivity unparalleled in any organism. This review describes three types of information--molecular data on cellular neurochemistry, temporal information about neural activity patterns, and behavioral data on the consequences of neural ablation and manipulation--that, along with genetic analysis, may ultimately lead to a complete functional map of the C. elegans nervous system.  相似文献

On a glorious spring day in the American Midwest, friends, colleagues, collaborators, and alumni of Prof. M.G. Replacement gathered together at the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana to celebrate 40 years of structural biology and honor the man behind it all: M.G. Rossmann. The date also corresponded approximately to MGR's 75th birthday. It was a memorable occasion for several reasons. An earlier meeting 10 years ago did also render homage to Michael (New Directions in Protein-Structure Relationships: Symposium in Honor of Professor M.G. Rossmann's 65th Birthday, Purdue University, October 21, 1995), but on this occasion the symposium was much more encompassing of structural biology and had a more global character. A large number of featured speakers presented and discussed advances in vast areas of structural biology and came from the four corners of the world to share their work with the new generations of structural biologists currently being trained at Purdue University.  相似文献
