Hybrid carp and grass carp from the zygote to the prolarval stage and adults were compared to establish distinguishing characteristics. Zygote diameter, yolk sac and embryo length were not different between the fishes. Body pigmentation patterns showed distinct separation among the prolarvae of the hybrids and grass carp. Total and preanal myomeres were higher in grass carp larvae than in the hybrids. The grass carp and hybrid larvae also differed in 38% of the proportional morphometric characters.
Average meristic counts of adults were significantly higher in hybrids compared with grass carp. Adults of the two fishes showed significant differences in 63% of the proportional morphometric measurements. Gill raker counts showed no overlap and lateral line scales were smaller and more numerous in the hybrid adults.  相似文献

Overseeding non‐endophytic turfgrass lawns with endophytic turfgrass is considered promising for the development of integrated pest management programs in urban landscapes. In this context, a better understanding of the variability in the preference–performance response of insect herbivores exposed to endophytic grasses could be useful to develop efficient practices. Specifically, while endophytic varieties that are strongly toxic and avoided could provide good control of mobile pests, varieties that are toxic but not avoided could be more suitable for the control of sedentary pests. In this laboratory study, we investigated how the infection of 10 grass varieties by Neotyphodium endophytes affected the feeding performance and preference of newly hatched nymphs of the hairy chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus hirtus Montandon (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae), a common turfgrass pest in north‐eastern USA. We found that endophytes generally induced a strong relationship between feeding performance and preference in this herbivore. However, two endophytic varieties did not conform to this relationship, with one variety being highly toxic but not avoided and the other less toxic but highly avoided. These results provide a solid basis to further explore the impacts of endophytic grasses on the dispersal and survival of insect pests in mixed stands of endophytic and non‐endophytic plants.  相似文献

The cDNAs encoding glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were cloned and sequenced from the liver of three Chinese carps with different tolerance to hepatotoxic microcystins, phytoplanktivorous silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), and herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). Using genome walker method, a 750 bp 5'-flanking region of the silver carp GPx gene was obtained, and several potential regulatory elements were identified in the promoter region of the GPx gene. The silver carp GPx gene was widely expressed in all tissues examined. Despite phylogenetic analysis, assigning this newly described carp GPx to the group of mammalian GPx2, the carp GPx seems more similar to GPx1 from a physiological point of view. The constitutive expression pattern of the three carp liver GPx gene, shows a positive relationship with their tolerance to microcystins.  相似文献

Underyearling hybrids of the cross Ctenopharyngodon idella ♀ (grass carp) and Hypophthalmichthys nobilis ♂ (bighead), averaging 104.8 mm total length were stocked for two weeks in cement tanks holding 605 1 of water with various combinations of submersed or floating aquatic plants. The submersed species most preferred were Ceratophyllum demersum, Chara sp. and Najas guadalupensis. Hydrilla verticillata, Hygrophila polysperma, Myriophyllum pinnatum and Utricularia foliosa were fed on from a minor to moderate extent. No feeding damage was observed on Egeria densa and Potamogeton illinoensis. Azolla caroliniana, Lemna sp. and Wolffia columbiana were readily consumed while Salvinia rotundifolia was not preferred when in combination with these floating plant species. Feeding damage to the submersed roots of Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes was minor during a 30 day period. Hybrid fingerlings readily fed on mosquito larvae and small leeches when offered to them in an aquarium on one occasion.  相似文献

Silver carp and bighead carp exhibited size-selection for food particles in aquarium experiments, but did not select their preferred species of plankton actively when they were distributed evenly in the water. They also possessed the capacity of selection for feeding area. The removal rates (% g−1 fish weight) of silver carp for smaller plankton (phytoplankton) were higher than those of bighead carp. The removal rates by the latter for bigger plankton (zooplankton) were higher than those of silver carp, but for plankton about 70 μm dia. the rates by the two species were almost equal.  相似文献

目的探讨大肠埃希菌的耐药率与多种抗菌药物使用量之间的相关关系。方法计算主要抗菌药物每百床日的用药频度(DDDs),以及温州医学院附属第一医院院内感染大肠埃希菌的耐药率,并采用多元线性回归的方法进行分析。结果大肠埃希菌对头孢他啶的耐药率与头孢哌酮和头孢克罗的用量呈负相关,与头孢他啶的用量呈正相关;对庆大霉素的耐药率与头孢他啶、哌拉西林的用量里负相关;对亚胺培南的耐药率与哌拉西林用量呈正相关,与季度呈负相关;对复方新诺明的耐药率与阿米卡星用量呈正相关;对呋喃妥因的耐药率与头孢他啶、去甲万古霉素用量呈负相关。结论在大肠埃希菌耐药水平和抗菌药物使用量之间存在相关关系。  相似文献

Individual grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellu , were maintained in a respirometer for a month and fed pelleted diets containing various proportions of carbohydrate, fat and protein at different ration levels. Oxygen consumption was measured continuously, allowing the effects of consecutive daily feeding on respiration to be studied. The relationships established between daily food intake and oxygen consumption showed that, on average, 23.3% (high protein diet), 15.3% (high carbohydrate diet), 20.7% (high lipid diet) and 7.0% ( Lemnu diet ) of the absorbed energy was partitioned into specific dynamic action (SDA). (Here the term SDA is used to describe the oxygen consumption of a feeding fish in excess of the routine metabolic rate.) In terms of the overall energy budgets of growing fish, SDA represented between 12 and 58% of the total heat lost over the experimental period and was equivalent to between 14 and 33% of the consumed energy. Ration was positively correlated with heat loss due to total respiration ( r = 0.881) and with heat loss due to SDA ( r = 0.762). As ration increased, the size of SDA relative to total respiration increased. Significant positive correlations were found between oxygen consumption (total or due to SDA) and specific growth rate, and between oxygen consumption and the deposition of protein and energy. However, growth rate had a minimal influence on daily oxygen consumption when compared with food intake.  相似文献

Morphological and karyological comparisons of 25–28 hybrid grass carp from each of 3 year-classes (1979–1981) indicated that diploid fish resulted during 1979 (82.1%) and 1980 (76.0%) the others being triploid. All of the fish tested from the 1981 year-class were triploid. Most triploid fish differed from diploid fish by having a faster growth rate, fewer scales in the lateral line and transverse series below the lateral line, a relatively longer gut, and fewer deformities.  相似文献

Understanding how omnivorous consumers are affected by their resources and how this is expressed through the food chain is a fundamental issue in ecology. We used stable isotope analysis of archived scales of two pelagic single-chain omnivorous fish species, bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix), to reconstruct historical trophic interactions patterns along a gradient of resources. We found that, although bighead carp and silver carp utilize the similar resources from the pelagic food chain, they can coexist and persist not only by regulating their trophic position and trophic dissimilarity, but also by regulating trophic niche width. Omnivorous fish often exhibit flexible foraging strategies, which is closely related to the availability of ecologic context. We found a positive relationship between trophic dissimilarity and zooplankton density, which may indicate that the competitive interactions induce strong top-down effects on zooplankton, and/or that high zooplankton availability release the between-population trophic interaction through bottom-up effect. The trophic niche width of bighead carp was positively related with zooplankton availability, probably reflecting that the niche of an omnivore at a higher trophic position is more sensitive to high quality resources. Our results indicate how different aspects of the trophic partitioning of coexisting omnivores may be regulated by different ecological contexts. These alternatives are not mutually exclusive and further theoretical work should include both these mechanisms to re-evaluate the effects of omnivory on food web properties.  相似文献

Synopsis This study examined the effects of various pH values on sperm motility times of white suckers,Catostomus commersoni, from two artificially acidified lakes in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), northwestern Ontario. White sucker sperm were active (motile) in water at all pH values tested (3.0–7.0). The maximum sperm motility time was 76.9 seconds and the minimum time was 51.9 seconds. Sperm motility times of fish from Lake 302N were similar to those of fish from Lake 223 at all pH values except pH 5.0 and 5.5. At these two pH values, sperm motility times of Lake 223 fish were longer than those of Lake 302N fish. In both lakes sperm motility at ambient lake pH levels (Lake 223 + 5.1, Lake 302N + 6.3) were similar to those at pH 7.0. Motility times of all fish tested were within the range of time during which fertilization normally occurs, indicating that reproductive failures in Lake 223 were probably not caused by impairment of sperm motility times.  相似文献

The rate at which triploid grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella , consumed two plant species from different locations was measured and compared to the chemical composition of the plants. Grass carp fed on Elodea canadensis from three lakes at significantly different rates ( P > 0.001), but did not eat Elodea densa from two of the sites at different rates. Feeding rate of the grass carp was positively correlated to the concentration of calcium ( r = 0.976) and lignin ( r = 0.946), but negatively correlated to the content of iron ( r =−0.808), silica (r=-0.934) and cellulose ( r =−0.922). Multiple regression analysis revealed that calcium and cellulose content were the most important predictors of consumption rate. These experiments demonstrate that water chemistry may affect palatability and could in part be responsible for some of the discrepancies in grass carp consumption rate and preference studies.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the feeding rates, preferences, survival rates, maturation times, and weight gain of four common species of grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) on four lines of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). When safflower lines were presented individually, all were readily consumed although consumption differed significantly according to grasshopper species, age and sex, and to safflower line. Consumption was greatest on a safflower line devoid of spines. However, grasshoppers also fed readily on spiny lines, and results of experiments in which all safflower lines were presented together indicated preferences that did not necessarily correspond to the results of the single-line feeding trials. Camnula pellucida, a graminivorous species, did feed on safflower, but restricted feeding almost exclusively to stem cambium, whereas Melanoplus bivittatus, M. packardii and M. sanguinipes fed mainly on the heads, flowers and leaves. Highly significant differences in grasshopper maturation time and weight gain were apparent among grasshopper species, and among safflower lines. Seedtec-5, the line which was least digestible, least consumed and least preferred nevertheless yielded rapid development and the greatest body weights of grasshoppers. All species of Melanoplus developed more quickly and gained more weight on safflower than on wheat. One species, M. packardii, was more able to utilise safflower than its congeners, and may gain competitive advantage if safflower becomes widely grown.  相似文献

Interspecific genetic differences in malate dehydrogenase (MDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and esterase (EST) isozymes in carp (Cyprinus carpio) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) were used to examine the allelic expressions in the hybrid between these species. A unique liver SOD and muscle LDH phenotype unambiguously identifies all presumed hybrid individuals. There was no evidence of F2 or backcross phenotypes in hybrid individuals. Liver MDH and EST phenotypes in hybrids show a preferential expression of goldfish isozymes. Variation in the levels of carp liver MDH isozymes may result from the polymorphism of a regulatory mutation affecting isozyme expression, leading to gene silencing after duplication.This work was supported through NSERC (Canada) grants to James P. Food of sterile triploid bighead carp, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis , was examined in ponds receiving water from a hypereutrophic take in Florida. No distinctive seasonal changes in food composition were found. The fish fed selectively on Botryococcus braunii Kuetzing, a large nuisance algal species, which constituted 61% of the volume and 50% of the dry weight of the food. Zooplankton was highly selected, but constituted only 3% of the food volume because of the low zooplankton density in the ponds. The remaining proportion of food consisted mainly of blue-green algae. Final fish biomass was low, ranging from 60 to 97 kg ha−1 in individual ponds. Low biomass was due to slow fish growth and high fish mortality. Despite low biomass, the fish lowered the ratio of blue-green/green algae in the ponds and tended to lower phyto- and zooplankton abundance.  相似文献

Hybrid carp were raised in 1651 indoor tanks. Two tanks were used in this study each stocked with five fish (average total length and weight = 235.7 mm; 116.1 g); one tank was provided with zooplankton and the other with zooplankton and Chara sp. The hybrids fed actively on zooplankton at an average daily rate of 39% and Chara at 2.6% by body weight. Growth was estimated as 0.36% (0.43 g) per day. The hybrids on the two food types showed no significant differences either in plankton consumption or growth rate.  相似文献

We assessed the intraspecific mass scaling of standard metabolic rate (SMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR), excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), and erythrocyte size in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), with body masses ranging from 4.0 to 459 g. SMR and MMR scaled with body mass with similar exponents, but neither exponent matched the expected value of 0.75 or 1, respectively. Erythrocyte size scaled with body mass with a very low exponent (0.090), suggests that while both cell number and cell size contribute to the increase in body mass, cell size plays a smaller role. The similar slopes of MMR and SMR in grass carp suggest a constant factorial aerobic scope (FAS) as the body grows. SMR was negatively correlated with FAS, indicating a tradeoff between SMR and FAS. Smaller fish recovered faster from the exhaustive exercises, and the scaling exponent of EPOC was 1.075, suggesting a nearly isometric increase in anaerobic capacity. Our results provide support for the cell size model and suggest that variations of erythrocyte size may partly contribute to the intraspecific scaling of SMR. The scaling exponent of MMR was 0.863, suggesting that the metabolism of non-athletic fish species is less reliant on muscular energy expenditure, even during strenuous exercise.  相似文献

Fingerling grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella , 90–160 mm t.l. , were acclimated to experimental salinities of < 1 (fresh water), 91, 195 and 317 mOsm/kg. Oxygen consumption rates of fish declined, as salinity increased, from 0.16 mg O2/g-h in fresh water to 0.11 mg O2/g-h at an ambient concentration of 317 mOsm/kg. Plasma electrolytes (Na+ and Cl−1) and total plasma ionic concentrations increased slightly following 10 days of exposure to ambient salinities greater than 195 mOsm/kg. At 317 mOsm/kg fish appeared to lose control of plasma electrolyte concentrations. As the osmotic gradient was reduced between the fish and the external medium it might have become advantageous to the maintenance of the osmotic equilibrium to reduce blood circulation to the gills, thus imposing a reduction in metabolic rate.  相似文献
