The Caricaceae is a small family of tropical trees and herbs in which most species are dioecious. In the present study, we extend our previous work on dioecy in the Caricaceae, characterising the morphological variation in sexual expression in flowers of the dioecious tree Jacaratia mexicana . We found that, in J. mexicana , female plants produce only pistillate flowers, while male plants are sexually variable and can bear three different types of flowers: staminate, pistillate and perfect. To characterise the distinct types of flowers, we measured 26 morphological variables. Our results indicate that: (i) pistillate flowers from male trees carry healthy-looking ovules and are morphologically similar, although smaller than, pistillate flowers on female plants; (ii) staminate flowers have a rudimentary, non-functional pistil and are the only flowers capable of producing nectar; and (iii) perfect flowers produce healthy-looking ovules and pollen, but have smaller ovaries than pistillate flowers and fewer anthers than staminate flowers, and do not produce nectar. The restriction of sexual variation to male trees is consistent with the evolutionary path of dioecy from hermaphrodite ancestors through the initial invasion of male-sterile plants and a subsequent gradual reduction in female fertility in cosexual individuals (gynodioecy pathway), but further work is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Pernetttya rigida is endemic to the Juan Fernández archipelago. Although all flowers are complete, with seemingly fertile stamens and pistils, differences in fruit production and detailed field, anatomical, and morphological studies indicate they are functionally unisexual, and the species is consequently dioecious. A comparison of 15 features demonstrated sigdicant differences between the sexes. The populational sex ratio is 1:1. Nectaries located between the filaments produce small amounts of floral nectar with similar sugar composition in both sexes. There are =33,357 (or = 133,429) pollen tetrads (or pollen grains)/male flower and =109 ovules/female flower. No tetrads in either hand self-pollinated or open pollinated male flowers showed any pollen germination. Tetrads on open- and hand-pollinated female flowers germinate. Female flowers do not show autogamy or apomixis. During more than 80 hours of field observation, we recorded only seven floral visitors (representing three insect species). In spite of this, openpollinated female flowers have abundant fruit and seed-set. Thus, we conclude that pollen is transferred abiotically and the ever-present wind over the exposed ridges of the islands is the likely dispersal agent. A number of anemophilous features, such as dry pollen and exposed habitat, support this conclusion. Thus, dioecy and anemophily have evolved independently, in situ , in this species in this remote locality. Preservation of habitat and elimination of competitive invasives are the primary conservation challenges.

Bees foraging for nectar should choose different inflorescences from those foraging for both pollen and nectar, if inflorescences consist of differing proportions of male and female flowers, particularly if the sex phases of the flowers differ in nectar content as well as the occurrence of pollen. This study tested this prediction using worker honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) foraging on inflorescences of Lavandula stoechas. Female flowers contained about twice the volume of nectar of male flowers. As one would predict, bees foraging for nectar only chose inflorescences with disproportionately more female flowers: time spent on the inflorescence was correlated with the number of female flowers, but not with the number of male flowers. Inflorescence size was inversely correlated with the number of female flowers, and could be used as a morphological cue by these bees. Also as predicted, workers foraging for both pollen and nectar chose inflorescences with relatively greater numbers of both male and female flowers: time spent on these inflorescences was correlated with the number of male flowers, but not with the number of females flowers. A morphological cue inversely associated with such inflorescences is the size of the bract display. Choice of flowers within inflorescences was also influenced predictably, but preferences appeared to be based upon corolla size rather than directly on sex phase.

During the first stages of development, flowers of most dioecious species are hermaphroditic, with their transition to unisexual flowers being the result of the developmental arrest of one set of reproductive organs. In this work, we describe the development of male and female flowers of the dioecious wild grape species Vitis vinifera ssp. silvestris through scanning electron microscopy analysis and cytological observations, focusing our attention on the transition from bisexual to unisexual development. We divide floral development of the wild grape into eight stages. Differences between male and female flowers appear first at stage 6, when the style and stigma start to differentiate in female but not in male flowers. Cytological analysis of the slowly growing abortive pistil of male flowers shows that megagametophyte formation is, surprisingly, not inhibited. Instead of pistil abortion in the male flower, sexual determination is accomplished through programmed death of external nucellus cells and some layers of integumentary cells. Sterility of male structures in female flowers follows a different pattern, with microspore abnormalities evident from the time of their release from the tetrad. Sterile microspores and pollen grains in female flowers display an abnormal round shape, lacking colpi and possessing uniformly thickened cell walls that impede germination.

To understand the regulatory mechanisms governing unisexual flower development in cucumber, we conducted a systematic morphogenetic analysis of male and female flower development, examined the dynamic changes in expression of the C-class floral organ identity gene CUM1, and assessed the extent of DNA damage in inappropriate carpels of male flowers. Accordingly, based on the occurrence of distinct morphological events, we divided the floral development into 12 stages ranging from floral meristem initiation to anthesis. As a result of our investigation we found that the arrest of stamen development in female flowers, which occurs just after the differentiation between the anther and filament, is mainly restricted to the primordial anther, and that it is coincident with down-regulation of CUM1 gene expression. In contrast, the arrest of carpel development in the male flowers occurs prior to the differentiation between the stigma and ovary, given that no indication of ovary differentiation was observed even though CUM1 gene expression remained detectable throughout the development of the stigma-like structures. Although the male and female reproductive organs have distinctive characteristics in terms of organ differentiation, there are two common features regarding organ arrest. The first is that the arrest of the inappropriate organ does not affect the entirety of the organ uniformly but occurs only in portions of the organs. The second feature is that all the arrested portions in both reproductive organs are spore-bearing parts.Abbreviations SEM Scanning electron microscopy - TEM Transmission electron microscopy - TUNEL TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling  相似文献

? The diversity of plant breeding systems provides the opportunity to study a range of potential reproductive adaptations. Many mechanisms remain poorly understood, among them the evolution and maintenance of male flowers in andromonoecy. Here, we studied the role of morphologically male flowers ('male morph') in andromonoecious Passiflora incarnata. ? We measured morphological differences between hermaphroditic and male morph flowers in P.?incarnata and explored the fruiting and siring ability of both flower types. ? Male morph flowers in P.?incarnata were of similar size to hermaphroditic flowers, and there was little evidence of different resource allocation to the two flower types. Male morph flowers were less capable of producing fruit, even under ample pollen and resource conditions. By contrast, male morph flowers were more successful in siring seeds. On average, male morph flowers sired twice as many seeds as hermaphroditic flowers. This difference in male fitness was driven by higher pollen export from male morph flowers as a result of greater pollen production and less self-pollen deposition. ? The production of male morph flowers in P.?incarnata appears to be a flexible adaptive mechanism to enhance male fitness, which might be especially beneficial when plants face temporary resource shortages for nurturing additional fruits.

Myristica fatua is a dioecious specialist species restricted to the endangered, freshwater Myristica swamp forests in the Western Ghats, India. Earlier studies have alluded to pollination by deception in members of the Myristica genus, and thus we examined the pollination ecology comprising floral biology, flower production, flower visitors, and reproductive success in M. fatua and inferred the potential strategies that could permit such deception in this habitat specialist tree. Male flowers provide pollen rewards for an extended period of time while female flowers are rewardless and both sexes are visited by generalist insects, mainly by honeybees and stingless bees. Bee visits were significantly more frequent and longer on male than on female flowers as bees collected pollen from male flowers. We found that flower production patterns create a preponderance of males compared to females in the swamp populations. Using a model of honeybee color vision, we found the distance between the color loci of male and female flowers and based on minimum visual angle subtended by these flowers, we suggest that the two floral sexes cannot be discriminated by bees. Bees are likely deceived by the perceptual similarity of rewardless female flowers to pollen-offering male flowers and pollination is the consequence of foraging errors made by pollinators that encounter largely male–rarely female flower mosaics as they forage among clump-distributed M. fatua trees in the swamp habitat.

Diversification of phytophagous insects is often associated with changes in the use of host taxa and host parts. We focus on a group of newly discovered Neotropical tephritids in the genus Blepharoneura , and report the discovery of an extraordinary number of sympatric, morphologically cryptic species, all feeding as larvae on calyces of flowers of a single functionally dioecious and highly sexually dimorphic host species ( Gurania spinulosa ) in eastern Ecuador. Molecular analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase-I gene from flies reared from flowers of G. spinulosa reveal six distinct haplotype groups that differ by 7.2–10.1% bp (uncorrected pairwise distances; N  = 624 bp). Haplotype groups correspond to six distinct and well-supported clades. Members of five clades specialize on the calyces of flowers of a particular sex: three clades comprise male flower specialists; two clades comprise female flower specialists; the sixth clade comprises generalists reared from male and female flowers. The six clades occupy significantly different morphological spaces defined by wing pigmentation patterns; however, diagnostic morphological characters were not discovered. Behavioural observations suggest specific courtship behaviours may play a role in maintaining reproductive isolation among sympatric species. This paper describes the results of a series of experiments conducted to unravel the patterns of sex expression and reproductive output in a fascinating species with high variation in sexuality. Commelina benghalensis L., an andromonoecious rainy season weed, bears male and bisexual flowers in axillary spathes of all the plants investigated. Bisexual flowers are of two types; chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL). The former are borne on subaerial and the latter on subterranean shoots, in addition to those on aerial spathes. Three populations of the species, designated JU1, JU2 and JU3, were scanned for three consecutive years from 1996 to 1998, and the number and distribution of male, CH and CL flowers per plant were found to vary. The mere number of CH/CL flowers per plant is by itself not an accurate measure of mixed mating. It is necessary to confirm that CH flowers actually outcross and, if they do so, to what extent. Comparison of the pollen/ovule (P/O) ratio and percentage pollen germination on the stigmas of the CH and CL flowers have been used as indices of the pollination system. Confirmation of this was sought from the fruit and seed sets obtained after manual pollination of emasculated flowers with self- and cross-pollen. Results so obtained were compared with those of natural pollination. In the majority of CH flowers, the male and female reproductive phases (i.e. anther dehiscence and stigma receptivity) overlap, providing for self-pollination. However, two exceptions to this general behaviour were found in some plants of all the three populations. In some CH flowers, the female phase matures prior to anther dehiscence while in others, the anthers are sterile. Such plants, designated as variants 1 and 2, respectively, facilitate cross-pollination. While the CL flowers contribute to the production of selfed progeny, the variants of CH ones permit formation of outcrossed progeny, indicating a mixed mating strategy in C. benghalensis.

Blepharoneura , a neotropical genus of tephritid fruit flies, includes newly discovered morphologically cryptic species that are highly host specific. Several species of fly, each specific to a different host tissue can infest a single species of sexually dimorphic host. Using allozyme electrophoresis, we analysed morphologically similar populations of flies reared from various tissues of five species of host plant representing three subtribes of the Cucurbitaceae. In Venezuela, we found three sympatric species of Blepharoneura feeding on Gurania spinulosa Cogn. (one species on male flowers, another on female flowers, and a third on seeds). In Costa Rica, we found four non-interbreeding populations of Blepharoneura feeding on G. costaricensis Cogn. : two sympatric 'lowland' populations (one feeding on male flowers and another on female flowers) and two sympatric 'highland' populations (also specific to flowers of different sexes). Phylogenetic analyses revealed a species-rich clade of specialists associated with flowers of the Guraniinae, and a species-poor clade of generalists associated with seeds of the Guraniinae. Specialization on male vs. female flowers appears to have occurred repeatedly. Patterns of laryal dispersal may underlie differehces in diversification of seed vs. flower clades: larvae that feed on seeds are dispersed by bats; larvae feeding on flowers are not dispersed.

In this paper we compare the sensitivity of different squash genotypes to ethylene and brassinosteroids by studying the effects of different ethylene and brassinosteroid treatments on the sexual expression and flower development of different C. pepo genotypes: Bolognese (Bog) and Vegetable Spaghetti (Veg), two contrasting lines for ethylene production and sensitivity, as well as Cora, a standard commercial hybrid. Results have demonstrated that ethylene has a much greater effect on sexual expression and flower development in C. pepo than brassinosteroids. Ethephon increases the number of female flowers per plant and reduces the first male phase of development, while treatments with the ethylene inhibitors AVG and STS reduce the number of female flowers per plant and expand the first male phase of development. The differential response observed between genotypes appears to be related to ethylene production and sensitivity. Bog, which produces more ethylene and is more sensitive to this hormone, responded much better to AVG and STS, reducing the number of female flowers per plant, while Veg, which is characterised by lower production of and sensitivity to ethylene, responded better to ethephon by reducing the first male phase of development and increasing the number of female flowers per plant. The differential abortion of female and male flowers in ethephon, AVG and STS treatments, as well as the occurrence of bisexual flowers in the AVG and STS treated plants of the more ethylene sensitive genotypes, demonstrate that ethylene is also involved in the development of female flowers. Female flower buds require a minimal level of ethylene not only to complete their development and maturation without a premature abortion, but also to arrest the development of stamens in the third whorl and to promote the appropriate growth of the carpels. On the contrary, the role of brassinosteroids in the sexual expression of C. pepo was not so evident. The application of brassinazole, an inhibitor of brassinosteroid biosynthesis slightly changes the production of ethylene in the three analysed genotypes, but those changes have little effect on their sexual phenotypes, and they do not alter the development of the unisexual flowers.

To test the prediction of sex allocation theory that plants or flowers high in resource status emphasize the female function, we explored the variation in both biomass (the number of pollen grains and ovules) and temporal (male and female durations) sex allocation among and within plants of protandrous Lobelia sessilifolia in relation to plant size and flower position within plants. Among plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower of a plant increased with plant size, whereas the mean P/O ratio (number of pollen grains/number of ovules ratio) decreased with plant size. The mean male duration, the mean female duration, and the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity per flower of a plant were not correlated with plant size. Thus, large plants emphasized female function in terms of biomass sex allocation, which is consistent with the prediction of size-dependent sex allocation theory. The results for temporal sex allocation, however were inconsistent with the theory. Within plants, the mean number of pollen grains and ovules per flower at each position decreased from lower to upper flowers (early to late blooming flowers) and that of the P/O ratio increased from lower to upper flowers. The mean male duration and the mean female duration per flower decreased from lower to upper flowers, whereas the mean ratio of male duration/flower longevity increased from lower to upper flowers. The population sex ratio changed from male-biased to female-biased. Thus, later blooming flowers emphasized the male function in terms of both biomass and temporal sex allocation, consistent with the sex allocation theory, regarding the change in the population sex ratio.

Summary Using an immunological method we assayed the levels of auxin, abscisic acid and three cytokinins (transzeatin riboside, dihydrozeatin riboside, isopentenyladenosine) in flowers of female and male plants of Asparagus officinalis L. at different stages of development. The largest differences between the sexes were found for auxin: auxin content was found to be about three times higher in young male flowers than in female flowers at a corresponding developmental stage. In order to identify some of the biochemical markers linked to sex differentiation, we also examined peroxidase isoenzyme patterns during flower development. We found five flower-specific peroxidase bands, three of which appear to be localized in the anthers. In young flowers still sexually undifferentiated in their morphology these bands are present in both sexes. They subsequently rapidly disappear in the female flower (approximately at the same time as when anther development is blocked), while they persist for a much longer time in the male. The temporary presence of these peroxidase isoenzymes in female young flowers together with the large difference in auxin content indicate that the stage of the young flower is a crucial moment in the process of sex determination.

Flowers of three pistillate (female), two heterogametic staminate (male) and two homogametic male genotypes of Asparagus officinalis L. were compared for morphology and vascular anatomy of the flower and for embryological development to the stage of mature ovules and pollen. Flowers are liliaceous, the staminate with rudimentary pistils and the pistillate with collapsed anthers. The uncomplicated vascular pattern differs between staminate and pistillate flowers only in the size and degree of maturation of bundles to stamens and carpels. Longer styles appear to be correlated with a greater extent of ovule development in ovaries of staminate flowers. Microsporogenesis in males is normal with wall development corresponding to the Monocotyledonous type. The tapetum is glandular and binucleate, cytokinesis successive, the tetrads isobilateral or occasionally decussate, and the mature pollen grain two-celled. A pair of heteromorphic, possibly sex, chromosomes was observed in heterogametic male plants. Anther development is initially the same in pistillate flowers, but the tapetum degenerates precociously followed by collapse of microspore mother cells. In pistillate flowers the ovules are hemitropous, bitegmic, and slightly crassinucellate. Megasporogenesis-megagametogenesis conforms to the Polygonum type. In staminate flowers ovule development is like that in pistillate flowers until degeneration starts in nucellar and integumentary cells at the chalazal end. Ovules in both homogametic male genotypes rarely complete meiosis, while in the heterogametic males it is normally completed with about one ovule in 20 flowers forming a mature megagametophyte. Since manipulation of sex expression in Asparagus could be important in developing inbred male and female lines for breeding purposes, those aspects of the morphological and embryological observations presented which might be useful in planning experiments to induce sex changes are discussed briefly.

In Opuntia stenopetala, flowers initiate as hermaphrodite; however, at maturity, only the stamens in male flowers and the gynoecium in female flowers become functional. At early developmental stages, growth and morphogenesis of the gynoecium in male flowers cease, forming a short style lacking stigmatic tissue at maturity. Here, an analysis of the masculinization process of this species and its relationship with auxin metabolism during gynoecium morphogenesis is presented. Histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy were performed; auxin levels were immunoanalyzed and exogenous auxin was applied to developing gynoecia. Male flower style-tissue patterning revealed morphological defects in the vascular bundles, stylar canal, and transmitting tissue. These features are similar to those observed in Arabidopsis thaliana mutant plants affected in auxin transport, metabolism, or signaling. Notably, when comparing auxin levels between male and female gynoecia from O. stenopetala at an early developmental stage, we found that they were particularly low in the male gynoecium. Consequently, exogenous auxin application on male gynoecia partially restored the defects of gynoecium development. We therefore hypothesize that, the arrest in male flower gynoecia patterning could be related to altered auxin homeostasis; alternatively, the addition of auxin could compensate for the lack of another unknown factor affecting male flower gynoecium development.
