The current state of scientific researches in lichen microbiology was reviewed. Analysis of the literature revealed the main areas and fundamental issues which refer to investigation of microbial consortia in lichen bodies. Special attention was focused on analysis of the prokaryotic community which plays a structural and functional role and is involved in metabolism and regulation of activity of the lichen symbiosis as a whole. In the review, for the first time the information on the yeast community, of which some members do not occur presently in other environmental substrates, was summarized. The data on the protozoa inhabiting lichen thalli were also provided. The reviewed literature enabled us to consider the growing and decaying thallus as a complex ecosystem with specific levels of regulation of abundance, taxonomic diversity, and activity of the members of five kingdoms: fungi, plants, protozoa, eubacteria, and archaea.  相似文献

Although diverse bacteria capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons have been isolated and characterized, the vast majority of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, including anaerobes, could remain undiscovered, as a large fraction of bacteria inhabiting marine environments are uncultivable. Using culture-independent rRNA approaches, changes in the structure of microbial communities have been analyzed in marine environments contaminated by a real oil spill and in micro- or mesocosms that mimic such environments. Alcanivorax and Cycloclasticus of the gamma-Proteobacteria were identified as two key organisms with major roles in the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Alcanivorax is responsible for alkane biodegradation, whereas Cycloclasticus degrades various aromatic hydrocarbons. This information will be useful to develop in situ bioremediation strategies for the clean-up of marine oil spills.  相似文献

Microbial communities of printing paper machines   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6  
The microbial content of printing paper machines, running at a temperature of 45–50 °C and at pH 4·5–5, was studied. Bacteria were prevalent colonizers of the machine wet end and the raw materials. A total of 390 strains of aerobic bacteria were isolated and 86% of these were identified to genus and species by biochemical, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic methods. The most common bacteria found at the machine wet end were Bacillus coagulans and other Bacillus species, Burkholderia cepacia , Ralstonia pickettii , and in pink slimes, accumulating in the wire area and press section, species of Deinococcus, Aureobacterium and Brevibacterium . Paper-making chemicals also contained species of Aureobacterium , B. cereus , B. licheniformis , B. sphaericus , Bordetella, Hydrogenophaga , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Pantoea agglomerans , Pseudomonas stutzeri , Staphylococcus and sometimes other enteric bacteria, but these did not colonize the process water. Yeasts and moulds were not present in significant numbers . A total of 131 strains were tested for their potential to degrade paper-making raw materials; 91 strains were found to have degradative activity, mainly species of Burkholderia and Ralstonia , Sphingomonas and Bacillus , and enterobacteria produced enzymes which degraded paper-making chemicals. Stainless steel adhering strains occurred in slimes and wire water and were identified as Burkholderia cepacia , B. coagulans and Deinococcus geothermalis . Coloured slimes were formed on the machine by species of Deinococcus , Acinetobacter and Methylobacterium (pink), Aureobacterium , Pantoea and Ralstonia (yellowish) and Microbulbifer -related strains (brown). The impact of the strains and species found in the printing paper machine community on the technical quality of paper, machine operation, and as a potential biohazard (Hazard Group 2 bacteria), is discussed.  相似文献

Sediment cores were set up to study microbial colonisation and interactions on marine sand grains under enrichment conditions. Cores were enriched with photosynthetic media in the light and dark (PL, PD) and heterotrophic media in the light and dark (HL, HD), and were incubated for 25 days. Sediment chlorophylls were then measured by acetone extraction, viable heterotrophic bacteria by plate counts, and numbers of cells mm–2 sand grain surface by s.e.m. Chlorophyll a occurred in all sediments but was highest in the PL sediment. Bacteriochlorophyll a was only observed in the HL sediment. Heterotrophic viable counts were high in the HL and HD sediments. Dense growth of diatoms and blue-green algae, and a marine fungal Thraustochytrid sp. occurred on PL grains. The blue-green alga Schizothrix was often associated with the diatom Amphora on PL grains. Many different bacteria grew on HL and HD grains and some unusual colony and cell morphologies were recorded (Caulobacter, Flexibacter, polymer strands). Characteristic flakey material sometimes occurred in hollows on grains. The results are discussed in relation to microbial communities in low energy sedimentary environments.  相似文献

Microbial communities in contrasting freshwater marsh microhabitats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Heterotrophic microorganisms are widely recognized as crucial components of ecosystems; yet information on their community structure and dynamics in benthic freshwater habitats is notably scarce. Using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), we determined the composition of bacterial and fungal communities in a freshwater marsh over four seasons. DGGE revealed diverse bacterial communities in four contrasting microhabitats. The greatest compositional differences emerged between water-column and surface-associated bacteria, although communities associated with sediment also differed from those on plant litter and epiphytic biofilms. Sequences of bacterial clones derived from DGGE bands belonged to the Alphaproteobacteria (31%), Actinobacteria (19%) and Bacteriodetes (19%). Betaproteobacteria were notably absent. Fungal clones obtained from leaf litter were mainly Ascomycota , but two members of the Basidiomycota were also identified. Overall, habitat type was the most important factor explaining variation in bacterial communities among samples, whereas temporal patterns in community composition were less pronounced in spite of large seasonal variation in environmental conditions such as temperature. The observed differences among bacterial communities in different microhabitats were not caused by random variation, but rather appeared to be determined by habitat characteristics, as evidenced by largely congruent community profiles of replicate samples taken at 10–100 m distances within the marsh.  相似文献

Growing evidence suggests that microbiomes have been shaping the evolutionary pathways of macroorganisms for millennia and that these tiny symbionts can influence, and possibly even control, species interactions like host–parasite relationships. Yet, while studies have investigated host–parasites and microbiomes separately, little has been done to understand all three groups synergistically. Here, we collected infected and uninfected Eurypanopeus depressus crab hosts from a coastal North Carolina oyster reef three times over 4 months. Infected crabs demonstrated an external stage of the rhizocephalan parasite, Loxothylacus panopaei. Community analyses revealed that microbial richness and diversity were significantly different among tissue types (uninfected crab, infected crab, parasite externae and parasite larvae) and over time (summer and fall). Specifically, the microbial communities from parasite externae and larvae had similar microbiomes that were consistent through time. Infected crabs demonstrated microbial communities spanning those of their host and parasite, while uninfected crabs showed more distinctive communities with greater variability over time. Microbial communities were also found to be indicators of early-stage infections. Resolving the microbial community composition of a host and its parasite is an important step in understanding the microbiome's role in the host–parasite relationship and determining how this tripartite relationship impacts coevolutionary processes.  相似文献

Saturated hydrocarbons are quantitatively the most abundant fraction among all petroleum hydrocarbons. Significant advances have been made in the understanding of the anaerobic biodegradability of alkanes in terms of the microorganisms involved and the biochemical pathways over the past two decades. They can be used as carbon and energy sources by diverse physiological groups of microorganisms (isolates or consortia) grown under chlorate-reducing, nitrate-reducing, sufidogenic or methanogenic conditions. Two general biochemical mechanisms have been proposed for the initial activation of alkanes including addition of fumarate and carboxylation. However, glycyl radical enzymes dependent fumarate addition which yields alkyl-substituted succinate appear to be the most commonly shared mechanism for the anaerobic attack of alkanes under various redox conditions by phylogenetically diverse microorganisms. The genes encoding the candidate alkylsuccinate synthase have been recently described in alkane-degrading sulfate- and nitrate-reducers as well as in hydrocarbon-rich environments. Alternative mechanisms may also be available depending on the alkane-degrading microbial community and electron acceptors utilized.  相似文献

 The vertical distributions of planktonic bacteria, chroococcoid cyanobacteria, and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were examined in Lake Toya, an oligotrophic lake located in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, at monthly intervals from May 1993 to May 1994. The abundances of bacteria, cyanobacteria, and HNF during the study period ranged from 104 to 105,102 to 104, 10 to 102 cells ml−1, respectively. The range of bacterial abundances was among the lowest previously reported from other oligotrophic lakes. The vertical distributions of both bacteria and cyanobacteria were influenced by thermal stratification: they were homogeneous throughout the water column during the circulation period (January to April) and heterogeneous during the period of stratification (June to November). During the period of stratification, the cyanobacterial abundance decreased toward the surface in the euphotic zone while the frequency of diving cells (FDC) increased, suggesting that grazing pressure was high near the surface. This hypothesis was supported by the relatively high abundance of HNF at the surface and the negative correlation between HNF and cyanobacterial abundances in the euphotic zone (r = −0.503, n = 33, P < 0.05). On the other hand, multiple regression analysis revealed that 52% of the variation in bacterial abundance in the stratified period can be explained by chlorophyll a concentration, water temperature, and HNF abundance (df = 3, 45; F = 16.2; P < 0.01), suggesting that both substrate limitation and grazing loss by HNF were important factors controlling bacterial abundance in the lake. Antimicrobial peptide magainin II, isolated from the skin of the African clawed toad, has shown activity in vitro against a range of micro-organisms. Transgenic potato lines expressing a synthetic magainin gene show improved resistance to the bacterial plant pathogen, Erwinia carotovora. Culturable bacterial and fungal communities associated with magainin-producing potato plants were compared with those communities from the non-transgenic parental control and with another potato cultivar. Total numbers of aerobic bacteria recovered from the leaves of the magainin-producing line, its non-transgenic parent line and an unrelated cultivar did not differ significantly. There were no detectable differences in the numbers of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, pseudomonad populations or fungi recovered from foliage from the three plant lines. Bacterial populations recovered from the roots of a magainin-expressing plant line did not differ significantly from populations recovered from the unmodified parental line. Tubers from the magainin-expressing transgenic potatoes, however, had significantly lower total numbers of bacteria than tubers produced by unmodified plants. In vitro testing of rhizosphere isolates against magainin analogues found that bacterial isolates varied in their susceptibility to the peptides. There were no significant differences in the total numbers of fungi and yeasts recovered from the various plant lines, with one exception: higher numbers of fungi were recovered from roots of magainin-expressing plants than the unmodified control plants.  相似文献

Coral tumors are atypical skeletal forms found on coral reefs worldwide. Here we present an analysis of the microbial communities associated with skeletal tumors on the coral Porites compressa. Microbial growth rates on both healthy and tumorous P. compressa were decoupled from the surrounding water column. Microbial communities associated with tumorous colonies had a significantly faster growth rate than those associated with healthy P. compressa. The microbial community associated with the tumors contained more culturable Vibrio spp. and could utilize more carbon sources than the microbes associated with healthy colonies. Presence of tumors affected the composition and dynamics of the microbial population associated with the entire colony.  相似文献
