Two aspects of reproductive function were examined in relation to female fetus' contiguity to intrauterine male littermates. Following injection of 3.5 μg testosterone propionate (TP) on Day 3, females that had been positioned in utero between two males became sterile earlier in life than those located in utero between two females. Anogenital distances on Days 1 and 3 prior to neonatal treatment with TP were greater in females located in utero between two males than in females residing between two females in utero, suggesting that females developing between two males may have been exposed prenatally to a masculinizing substance, presumably an androgen. No reliable contribution of litter composition was apparent with respect to differentiation of female sexual behavior. Results indicate that littermate hormonal influence is present or effective and can be detected in a neonatally androgenized preparation.  相似文献

The effects of early testosterone propionate (TP) treatment on the adult sexual behavior of hamsters were investigated in two experiments. In Expt. I, male and female pups were injected with oil vehicle or 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, or 250 μg of TP 24 hr after birth. In Expt. II, males and females received either oil or 10 μg of TP on the day of birth (Day 1), Day 3, Day 5, Day 7, or Day 9. At 70 days of age all animals were gonadectomized and 10 days later tested for lordosis behavior after estrogen and progesterone priming. One week after the test for female behavior all females began receiving 500 μg of TP each day and were tested for mounting and intromission behavior three times at 10 day intervals. Lordosis behavior was inhibited by as little as 5 μg of TP given 24 hr after birth. In males this dose produced the maximal effect, but in females increasing dosages resulted in a proportional decrease in lordosis duration. One μg of TP neonatally facilitated later mounting and intromission behavior in females and 250 μg of TP was no more effective than 1 μg. Lordosis duration was inhibited in females by 10 μg of TP on either Day 1 or 3, however, mounts and intromissions were facilitated by TP treatment on Day 1, 3, 5 or 7. These experiments demonstrate that the mechanisms mediating masculine behavior are more sensitive to neonatal TP treatment than are the mechanisms mediating lordosis behavior.  相似文献

A series of three experiments compared the inhibitory effects of progesterone on estrogen- or androgen-induced sexual behavior in male and female hamsters. In the first experiment chronic progesterone treatment was found to have no effect on male copulatory behavior maintained after castration with testosterone propionate or estradiol benzoate. However, testosterone propionate was more effective at maintaining male behavior than estradiol benzoate. In the second experiment progesterone was found to have a slight inhibitory effect on the rate of the restoration of the intromission response after androgen treatment in males which had been castrated for 8 weeks. In the final experiment, chronic progesterone treatment markedly inhibited sexual receptivity in male and female hamsters which had been given 4 weeks of androgen or estrogen treatment and a single pretest injection of progesterone. Thus, progesterone was shown to be a potent inhibitor of androgen- or estrogen-induced estrus in both male and female hamsters. Due to the large difference in effectiveness on these two behavioral systems, we suggest that progesterone affects steroid-induced male copulatory behavior and female receptivity by different mechanisms of action.  相似文献

This study investigated the androgen specificity of aggressive and sexual behavior in the lizard Anolis carolinensis and the capacity of females of this species to exhibit male-typical copulation. Gonadectomized males and females were injected with testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP) or were implanted with Silastic tubing containing TP or DHTP. Either TP or DHTP activated male-typical sexual behavior in both males and females and activated aggressive behavior in males; DHTP activated aggressive behavior in females. Thus conversion of androgen to estrogen is not essential for these behavior patterns, and endogenous dihydrotestosterone may be important. TP but not DHTP stimulated receptivity in females, suggesting that conversion of testosterone to estrogen may underlie TP-stimulated receptivity. Females treated with TP did not differ from males in their display of male-typical courtship, neck-clasping, and intromission.  相似文献

The role of pups' appetite in the regulation of maternal consummatory behavior (food intake of nursing mothers), lactational performance and postpartum diestrus was studied over a period of 45 days postpartum in rats chronically exposed to either underfed or normally fed pups. Experimental rats (n = 10) daily received 5 pups, 4-10-days-old, that had been deprived of food for the preceding 24 h while under the care of nonlactating foster mothers. Control rats (n = 10) received normally fed pups obtained daily from lactating foster mothers. Throughout the experimental period, the daily milk yield (estimated by litter weight gain), the intake of food and water by the mother, as well as the ratio of litter weight gain to mother's intake of food and water were all markedly higher in rats nursing underfed pups than in rats nursing normally fed pups. After a peak in lactation around Day 15 postpartum, experimental rats produced the same amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in the beginning of lactation, while control rats produced only half the amount of milk during extended lactation as they did in early lactation. Regardless of the nutritional state of the suckling pups, maternal body weight increased progressively over the first four weeks of lactation and remained unchanged during the time of extended lactation. The postpartum diestrus and the subsequent diestrous phase in the time of extended lactation were considerably longer in duration in rats that nursed underfed pups. The onset of maternal behavior in pregnant hamsters was measured by presenting foster pups at 0900 and 2100 hr on Day 15 and at 0300, 0500, and 0700 hr on Day 16 and then at hourly intervals until parturition began. The occurrence of parturition was determined at each maternal test and at 0.5 hr intervals beginning at 0700 hr on Day 16. Nulliparous and primiparous animals became maternal at approximately the same time on Day 16, 2 and 6 hr prepartum, respectively, demonstrating that parturition is not essential for maternal behavior. The second experiment showed that nulliparous females injected with either 1 μg or 10 μgm estradiol-17β (E2), 0.1 mgm progesterone (P), 10 μgm E2 plus 0.1 mgm P, or oil at 1200 hr on Day 15 became maternal at the same time of day (0800–1000 hr) while parturition was delayed 8 hr in females receiving P. The results suggest a dissociation between the regulation of parturition and maternal care and are compared to previous research into the hormonal basis of maternal behavior in rats.  相似文献

Djungarian hamster females, Phodopus campbelli, are severely constrained in their ability to reproduce successfully and lose 20% of their body weight by the time pups are weaned. In the wild and in the laboratory, biparental care improves maternal reproductive success. Two experiments quantified the effects of paternal presence and partial lipectomy [surgical depletion of parametrial white adipose tissue (PWAT) on day 8 of the 18-day gestation] on maternal energy balance, reproductive success, and investment in a subsequent reproductive attempt. Paired females reproduced successfully, maintained body weight, and invested in a second litter. Removal of the male decreased pup survival, growth, and readiness for dispersal by 18 days of age. Solitary females lost 10% of their body weight by the birth and a further 10% by day 18 after the birth. Thus, paternal presence balanced maternal energy budgets during reproduction and prevented a 20% loss in body weight. Equivalent weight loss occurs in response to other maternal stressors, therefore 20% may be the maximum tolerable weight loss in this species. Fresh weight of interscapular brown adipose tissue was predicted by the extent of maternal hyperthermia but not by maternal energy balance or lipectomy. Partial lipectomy did not adversely affect the female or the first litter but decreased the probability of investment in a second reproductive attempt and halved the size of the second litter. This effect may have been due to the 0.1% of body weight amount of lipid removed or may reflect a specialized role for PWAT in adjusting maternal investment.  相似文献

Using radioimmunoassay we have measured the plasma and amniotic fluid levels of androgen and estradiol in male and female hamster fetuses nearing parturition. On Days 14 and 15 of gestation (day of birth = Day 16), plasma levels of androgen are higher in males than females while estradiol levels are equal. Amniotic fluid levels of these hormones, while lower than plasma, reflect the difference in androgen and the similarity in estradiol between sexes. Uterine position analysis on Day 14 suggests that female siblings located caudally suppress amniotic fluid androgen and elevate estradiol levels of male siblings. Comparison of Day 18 gestation male and female rat amniotic fluid androgen to Day 14 hamsters reveals that male rats are bathed in high levels of androgen. Female rats have lower levels which are not different from those of male hamsters. Female hamsters are exposed to little androgen. Relevance to behavioral sexual differentiation and the display of adult behavior is discussed.  相似文献

The pulsatile secretion of androgen was similar over a 12-hr period in breeding male ferrets implanted with jugular catheters which either achieved an intromission with an estrous female or received no socio-sexual contact. This negative result contrasts with the previous demonstration (Carroll, Erskine, and Baum, 1987, Endocrinology 121, 1349-1359) of a significant, delayed rise in mean plasma androgen concentrations in breeding male ferrets 5-12 hr after mating. Males used in that previous study had lower initial mean plasma levels of androgen and smaller testis diameters than the present males. We therefore asked whether differences in circulating androgen levels, characteristic of males in different phases of the seasonal breeding cycle, might affect the expression of mating behavior. Castrated males given 0, 0.2, 2.0, or 5.0 mg/kg of testosterone propionate (TP) showed dose-related increases in the expression of different components of sexual behavior, including neck gripping, mounting, and intromitting. Surprisingly, intromissive performance was significantly better in intact breeding males than in castrates given even the highest dosage of TP. These results suggest that ferrets' mating performance may vary with seasonal variations in androgen availability, and that the ability of males to exhibit a postcoital increase in the testicular secretion of androgen may be limited to the beginning or end of the breeding season, when circulating levels of androgen are relatively low. Mating-induced increments in androgen secretion at these times may enhance subsequent reproductive success by facilitating males' intromissive capacity, which is required for the induction of ovulation and optimal sperm transport in female partners.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted in order to examine the biochemical pathway through which testosterone (T) acts to produce pup-killing behavior in ovariectomized female mice. Estradiol benzoate (EB) and testosterone propionate (TP) were both effective in stimulating the pup-killing response (Experiment 1). The nonaromatizable androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the aromatizable androgen testosterone (T) were equipotent in eliciting the behavior while the nonaromatizable androgen androstanedione (AA) was ineffective (Experiment 2). Pup-killing behavior was activated by the aromatizable androgen androstenedione (AE) but only if it was administered chronically at very high doses (Experiment 3). The combination of subthreshold doses of EB and DHT synergized to produce the pup-killing response (Experiment 4). These findings suggest that both aromatization and reduction may be important for the stimulation of pup-killing behavior in mice.  相似文献

To assess the effects of prenatal exposure to androgen on adult aggressiveness in mice, pregnant mice were given injections of 1.5 mg testosterone propionate (TP) or oil from Days 12 to 16 of pregnancy. All offspring were gonadectomized on the day of birth. Neonatal treatment occurred on the day following birth and consisted of one-half of the animals from each prenatal treatment group being injected with 100 μg TP while the other half were injected with oil, yielding four Prenatal/Neonatal treatment groups for each sex. On postnatal Day 60, all offspring were given subcutaneous implants of encapsulated testosterone (T) and tested for 10 min every other day against a male opponent until aggression was observed. Female offspring of TP-treated mothers were indistinguishable from males on external examination at birth. The duration of exposure to T required to induce aggression provides an index of the sensitivity of the neural substrate to T. When arranged from the most sensitive to the least sensitive to the aggression inducing action of T, the four Prenatal/Neonatal treatment groups of females were significantly different from each other: Group TP/TP > Group OIL/TP > Group TP/OIL > Group OIL/OIL. A similar pattern was observed for the male offspring. There were no differences in the proportion of animals per group that exhibited aggression (virtually all animals fought) or the intensity of aggression once exhibited. The results demonstrate that morphological and behavioral masculinization can occur in response to exposure to androgen during prenatal as well as neonatal life in mice.  相似文献

The effects of litter size on maternal care, body weight and infant development of golden hamsters were investigated from a longitudinal perspective. Litters were culled to 1,3,6 and 9 pups, and the behavior and body weight of mothers and pups were recorded from the 5th to the 25th postpartum day. We noted that the time spent by mothers in bodily interactions with pups decreased as a function of litter size; maternal pup retrievals reached their maximum around the 13-15th day, which coincided with the increased locomotor activity of pups at this time; the total number of pup retrievals by the mother increased as a function of the litter size, but mothers of larger litters were more 'efficient' (i.e. they failed less frequently in exhibiting a full sequence of retrievals) and exhibited a low litter-size proportional mean number of retrievals. All mothers gradually lost body mass throughout lactation, and decrease in body weight was significantly related to litter size. The mean body weight gain (%) by pups decreased as a function of litter size, but we also noted that single and larger litter pups exhibited a decreased body mass (grams) by the 15th day, suggesting that infant development may be impaired at both extremes of experimental conditions. We concluded that the behavior of mothers and pups was affected by the litter size, and it appeared that the litter had an optimal size-not so large as to overlap the mother's physical capacity, and not so small as to fail to compensate for the parental investment.  相似文献

Reproductive and early life-history traits can be considered aspects of either offspring or maternal phenotype, and their evolution will therefore depend on selection operating through offspring and maternal components of fitness. Furthermore, selection at these levels may be antagonistic, with optimal offspring and maternal fitness occurring at different phenotypic values. We examined selection regimes on the correlated traits of birth weight, birth date, and litter size in Soay sheep (Ovis aries) using data from a long-term study of a free-living population on the archipelago of St. Kilda, Scotland. We tested the hypothesis that selective constraints on the evolution of the multivariate phenotype arise through antagonistic selection, either acting at offspring and maternal levels, or on correlated aspects of phenotype. All three traits were found to be under selection through variance in short-term and lifetime measures of fitness. Analysis of lifetime fitness revealed strong positive directional selection on birth weight and weaker selection for increased birth date at both levels. However, there was also evidence for stabilizing selection on these traits at the maternal level, with reduced fitness at high phenotypic values indicating lower phenotypic optima for mothers than for offspring. Additionally, antagonistic selection was found on litter size. From the offspring's point of view it is better to be born a singleton, whereas maternal fitness increases with average litter size. The decreased fitness of twins is caused by their reduced birth weight; therefore, this antagonistic selection likely results from trade-offs between litter size and birth weight that have different optimal resolutions with respect to offspring and maternal fitness. Our results highlight how selection regimes may vary depending on the assignment of reproductive and early life-history traits to either offspring or maternal phenotype.  相似文献

In most mammalian species, reduced androgen availability is associated with marked reductions in male sexuality; conversely, androgen replacement in castrated males restores sex behavior within a few weeks. Testosterone (T) pulse duration, amplitude, frequency, and inter-pulse interval may be as important as total amount of hormone in determining target tissue responsiveness. We remain ignorant of the number and duration of daily T pulses necessary and sufficient to sustain male mating behavior. An in-dwelling infusion system was employed to vary T-pulse frequencies and durations. Daily 4 h infusions of aqueous T (100 microg/0.064 ml) and twice daily 4 h pulses of T (each 50 microg/0.064 ml) were sufficient to maintain ejaculatory behavior of sexually experienced castrated hamsters for 11 weeks post-castration; castrated hamsters infused with vehicle ceased to display the ejaculatory pattern 3 weeks after gonadectomy. Circulating T concentrations of hormone-infused hamsters declined markedly 7 h after the termination of each infusion. These results establish that male sex behavior can be sustained with infusions of relatively low T concentrations for 4 h/day and suggests that the basal concentrations of T sustained by the gonad during inter-pulse intervals may not be necessary for maintenance of sex behavior. 4 h T infusions were sufficient to maintain penile and seminal vesicles weights, but not ventral prostate weights or flank gland dimensions; the threshold for maintaining male sex behavior is lower than that for some androgen-dependent peripheral structures. Development of effective androgen replacement regimens that sustain sex behavior in castrated animals may be useful in the design of androgen replacement therapy for hypogonadal men.  相似文献

Biparental male hamsters, Phodopus campbelli, act as midwives during the birth of their litter and are highly responsive to an experimentally displaced pup. They also have high peripheral concentrations of estradiol, a hormone with known roles in maternal behavior. Surgical castration during the gestation of their first litter was used to investigate the source of that estradiol and the functional role of testicular sex steroids in paternal responsiveness. In Experiment I, castration reduced both testosterone and estradiol concentrations, confirming that the testes were the primary source of estradiol. However, neither paternal responsiveness nor multiple measures of reproductive success were altered by the castration. Aggression directed towards an intruder, however, was reduced by castration. In Experiment II, removal of prior experience with birth or pups also failed to alter paternal responsiveness in castrated males. Although the present results do not preclude a role for local estradiol synthesis in the brain, results do not support an association between high circulating estradiol in males and their paternal behavior.  相似文献

We have studied several parameters of prostate function in two inbred lines (2.4 and SsLak) of young and old LSH hamsters. These included weight, acid phosphatase, and [3H]testosterone uptake as influenced by age, castration, and androgen treatment. In the hamster, prostatic acid phosphatase concentration was found to vary inversely with androgen levels, contrary to the usual assumption that this enzyme is androgen dependent. Prostatic uptake of tritiated testosterone was enhanced by castration and by treatment of castrates with doses of androgen which induced a moderate increase in gland size. With advancing age, the prostates of LSH hamsters (both strains) became atrophic rather than hyperplastic, in contrast with a previous report (1). This atrophy appeared to be a consequence of decreased testicular function. The LSH hamsters appear to be a suitable model for the study of senescent changes in the male reproductive system.  相似文献

A positive association (P < 0.01) was detected between estrone sulfate (ES) concentrations in maternal plasma at Day 30 of pregnancy and litter size at parturition in swine. This relationship was best described by a fifth order regression equation (R(2) = 0.5) which indicated that as ES increased from 1 to 7.5 ng/ml on Day 30, litter size increased from 0 (nonpregnant) to 18 piglets farrowed. Day of sampling (P < 0.02), month (P < 0.04) and parity (P < 0.08) were major sources of variation in the model. This indicated that effects of environmental factors such as heat stress, which influence conception rate and embryonic survival, are reflected in changes in maternal ES. Also, larger litter size associated with parous sows is reflected in increased ES in maternal plasma. We conclude that measurement of ES early in gestation may be useful in reproductive management to identify nonpregnant gilts and sows as well as those with small litters.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to delineate the period of sensitivity to a single androgen exposure during the initial neonatal hours on the development of masculine and feminine copulatory behavior in female rats. Female rats were injected once with either 500, 50, or 5 micrograms testosterone propionate (TP) at either 1 or 24 hr after birth. Following castration in adulthood and TP replacement, the females were tested four times at weekly intervals in prolonged sessions for masculine copulatory behavior. One month following the masculine copulatory tests the females were tested for 3 weeks for feminine copulatory behavior with weekly increasing levels of estradiol benzoate (2.5, 10, and 25 micrograms) and progesterone (200 micrograms). The results demonstrate that a single injection of TP administered at either 1 or 24 hr after birth can significantly increase the capacity of female rats to exhibit ejaculation patterns and that the amount of androgen that is administered is critical in determining the levels of ejaculatory responding. Similarly, the females given high doses (50 and 500 micrograms) of TP at either 1 or 24 hr neonatally were almost completely defeminized. In contrast, however, the females treated with 5 micrograms TP at 1 and 24 hr showed different levels of lordotic performance indicating a greater sensitivity to androgen immediately after birth than at 24 hr in female rats as has been shown in male rats.  相似文献

The effect of photoperiod on reproductive behavior in male ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) was studied in androgen-injected castrates maintained under long (16L:8D) or short (86:16D) photoperiods. Behavioral recordings were made over a 2-week period during which each male was paired with a female for 6.5 hr/day. There was some indication that males held on long days display higher levels of courtship activity during the initial period following pairing, but the evidence was not conclusive. Day length had no effect upon copulatory behavior. Long-day males exhibited consistently higher levels of nest building than short-day males, indicating that photoperiod affects building through some mechanism other than changes in endogenous androgen levels.  相似文献

Adult male pigeons, some intact and some castrated in adulthood, were housed in individual cages kept in an isolated room with temperature and lighting controlled. Weekly measurements were made of ad lib. food intake and body weight for 4 mo after surgery. Castration was followed by a significant depression in body weight and by initially depressed but then progressively enhanced feeding. Food deprivation elicited an increase in food intake proportional to body weight loss, but castrates consumed less food at 100%, 90%, and 80% of ad lib. feeding weight than either intact birds or castrates treated daily with testosterone propionate (TP). Castrates gained weight and ate more than controls in response to daily treatments (im) with TP (6 mg/400 g) or 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT, 6 mg/400 g), while androstenedione (15 mg/400 g) and androsterone (15 mg/400 g) were ineffective. Administration of 100 mg DHT (sc) to castrates produced a significant enhancement of body weight without elevating the level of food intake. The biological potency of these diverse androgens on male courtship behavior was reciprocal to that for weight-promoting potency. The results suggest that the structural requirements of the androgen molecule for promoting body weight differ from those for stimulating sexual behavior.  相似文献
