From the end of 1830, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire worked to prepare a book on thalattosuchians (Mesoeucrocodylia, Thalattosuchia) from the Jurassic of Normandy. This work, planned to be entitled “Histoire des crocodiliens renfermés dans le terrain oolithique”, was never completed. Searches in the archives of the central library of the “Muséum national d’histoire naturelle”, Paris, resulted in the rediscovery of the set of original drawings ordered by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to illustrate his book. These drawings, 21 in total, were executed by several artists working in the Muséum, including Jean-Charles Werner, Henri-Joseph Redouté, and Nicolas Hüet. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire offered this collection of drawings to the French Academy of Sciences in March 1834. These drawings were then donated to the library of the Muséum in November 1924 by Alfred Lacroix. This iconographic collection is of the highest importance for the history of palaeontology in France as it depicts unknown specimens that were destroyed during World War II.  相似文献

The mongoose family, Herpestidae, includes several species that comprise the most social small Carnivora. The small Indian mongooseHerpestes javanicus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1818), a South Asian species that has been introduced to numerous Caribbean and Pacific islands, has not been reported to show complex sociality. A radio-tracking study conducted on Oahu, Hawaii, revealed that a group of at least 5, and perhaps more than 10, large males in the study area shared a single, large home range during the breeding season. Members of this group spent far more time than expected within 20 m of fellow members. Group members frequently shared dens, sleeping within 50 cm of each other. Females maintained very small, overlapping home ranges inside the male group’s range. Male breeding coalitions have previously been reported in a congeneric species, the slender mongooseHerpestes sanguineus.  相似文献

Sagum posteli Delamare-Deboutteville & Nunes-Ruivo, 1954 (Copepoda: Lernanthropidae) is reported from the white grouper Epinephelus aeneus Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire caught off the Turkish Mediterranean coast. This documents the first discovery of this species in the Mediterranean and is only the second record. The species is redescribed from adult females and the cephalothoracic limbs are described for the first time. The valid species of the genus Sagum Wilson, 1913 are reviewed, and the poorly described species S. poeyi Ortiz, Lalana & Suarez, 2003 is relegated as a junior synonym of S. texanum Pearse, 1952, described from the same host. A key is provided to females of the ten valid species of Sagum and the known hosts for all species are summarised.  相似文献

Paleogene sedimentation in the Alpes Maritimes and Alpes de Haute Provence regions is composed of one complete sedimentary sequence. This sequence begins with the continental Formation from Microcodium and continues with the Cerithium layers, the Calcaires Nummulitiques and the Marnes Bleues, which are overlaid by the turbidites of the Grès d’Annot Formation. Sedimentation starts in the Nummulites perforatus zone close to the base of ‘the Truncorotaloides rohri zone (P 14) and ends in the Cassigerinella chipolensis-Pseudohastigerina micra zone (P 18) and the NP21 zone in the upper part of the Grès d’Annot. More biomarkers were used in order to define a more detailed local biozonation (biozones AMP 1 to AMP 7). Four local zones were also defined by the last occurrence of Nummulites millecaput and N. perforatus-N. ptukhiani and then by the first appearance of N. retiatus (AMGF 1-4). The evolution of benthic foraminiferal assemblages shows an increase in bathymetry from the internal platform in the Cerithium layers to the calcareous platform with large foraminifers, then to the external platform and the deep offshore environment of the Marnes Bleues and Grès d’Annot. Low faunal diversity in the Grès d’Annot together with the predominance of agglutinated species indicates a poorly oxygenated, organic rich and turbidite environment. Seven steps (SD 1 to SD 7) in the Eocene marine transgression are shown from East to West by detailed local biozonation and sequence analysis. Grès d’Annot sedimentation is also diachronous, beginning within the Truncorotaloides rohri zone (P 14, AMP 1) in the East and ending within the Pararotalia opima opima zone (P 20, middle Rupelian) in the West (Barrême). Small foraminifer Paleogene fauna from the Alpes Maritimes and Alpes de Haute Provence was studied from 400 samples. It is composed of 378 species. Two new taxa are proposed: Fissurina niceana n. sp. and Globocassidulina alpina n. sp. The species from the Escarène and Gorbio neighborhood described by M. von Hantken (1884) were re-examined.  相似文献

The study of Myxosporidia infecting Schilbe mystus (Linné, 1758) (Schilbeidae) and Citharinus citharus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1809) (Citharinidae) from the Sanaga and Bénoué basins revealed the presence of two new species of the genus Thelohanellus kudo, 1993. These species are Thelohanellus njinei sp. nov. and Thelohanellus lagdoensis sp. nov., found in the gut of Schilbe mystus and Citharinus citharus respectively. New data are also given on the diagnosis of Thelohanellus citharini, a species previously described in Chad.  相似文献

The disputed taxonomy of the genus Lepilemur I. Geoffroy, 1851 has been clarified considerably by cytogenetic techniques, especially analysis of karyotypes. An allopatric species of Lepilemur, L. septentrionalis, has been created recently on the basis of cytogenetic distinctions (Rumpler & Albignac, 1975). L. septentrionalis is shown here to be significantly smaller than the morphologically similar L. dorsalis in thirty-four of thirty-seven linear cranial dimensions, but significantly larger in interorbital breadth (lacrimale-lacrimale). Craniometric results therefore reinforce the cytogenetic conclusion that L. septentrionalis is a valid species distinct from L. dorsalis.  相似文献

Four new feather mite species of Vanginyssus Mironov, 2001 are described from vangas (Passeriformes: Vangidae), an endemic passerine family from Madagascar: Vanginyssus euryceros n. sp. from the helmet vanga Euryceros prevostii Lesson, V. madagascarinus n. sp. from the blue vanga Cyanolanius madagascarinus (Linnaeus), V. mystacornis n. sp. from the Crossley’s babbler Mystacornis crossleyi (Grandidier) and V.␣orioliae n. sp. from the Bernier’s vanga Oriolia bernieri Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. The genus Hapalemur Gray, 1870 is comprised of two species: H. simus Gray, 1870 and H. griseus Link, 1795. Hapalemur griseus contains, according to Osman Hill (1953), two species: H. g. griseus (Link, 1795) and H. g. olivaceus (I. Geoffroy, 1851). Recent ecological investigation by Petter & Peyrieras (1970) has helped the discovery of a third subspecies of H. griseus in the region of Lake Alaotra. Whilst making the cytogenetic study of the genus Hapalemur, we have completed the chromosomal evolution's schema, originated by Chu & Swomley (1961).  相似文献

Increasing salinity led to substantially higher ratios of mesophyll surface area to leaf area (Ames/A) for Phaseolus vulgaris and Gossypium hirsutum and a smaller increase for Atriplex patula, a salt-tolerant species. The increase in internal surface for CO2 absorption did not lead to higher CO2 uptake rates, since the CO2 resistance expressed on the basis of mesophyll cell wall area (rcell) increased even more with salinity. The differences among species in the sensitivity of photosynthesis to salinity in part reflect the different Ames/A and rcell responses.  相似文献

Three Megacricetodon species are recognized in the Middle Miocene locality of Blanquatère 1 (Languedoc-Roussillon province, France). Two are new, the small-sized M. tautavelensis nov. sp. the medium to large-sized M. aunayi nov. sp., the third one being the already known M. “collongensis-gersii”, a medium-sized species found in other Miocene localities of the area. Size and morphology differentiate these species. Such a high number of contemporaneous species of the genus Megacricetodon is found for the first time in a Miocene locality in the region and indicate that the evolution of this genus in western Europe is likely more complicated. It may testify both of a biogeographical differentiation and of migration events. According to our calibration charts, the deposit is dated ca. 16 Ma ago. The position of Vieux-Collonges (MN 5) and Sansan (MN 6) on the biochronological scale is also discussed, as well as the estimated age of the biozonal boundaries MN 3/MN 4, MN 4/MN 5 and MN 5/MN 6.  相似文献

Hedgehog (Hh) signaling requires regulation of the receptor Patched-1 (Ptch1), which, in turn, regulates Smoothened activity (canonical Hh signaling) as well as other non-canonical signaling pathways. The mutant Ptch1 allele mesenchymal dysplasia (mes), which truncates the Ptch1 C terminus, produces a limited spectrum of developmental defects in mice as well as deregulation of canonical Hh signaling in some, but not all, affected tissues. Paradoxically, mes suppresses canonical Hh signaling and binds to Hh ligands with an affinity similar to wild-type mouse Ptch1 (mPtch1). We characterized the distinct activities of the mes variant of mPtch1 mediating Hh signaling through both canonical and non-canonical pathways. We demonstrated that mPtch1 bound c-src in an Hh-regulated manner. Stimulation with Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) of primary mammary mesenchymal cells from wild-type and mes animals activated Erk1/2. Although Shh activated c-src in wild-type cells, c-src was constitutively activated in mes mesenchymal cells. Transient assays showed that wild-type mPtch1, mes, or mPtch1 lacking the C terminus repressed Hh signaling in Ptch1-deficient mouse embryo fibroblasts and that repression was reversed by Shh, revealing that the C terminus was dispensable for mPtch1-dependent regulation of canonical Hh signaling. In contrast to these transient assays, constitutively high levels of mGli1 but not mPtch1 were present in primary mammary mesenchymal cells from mes mice, whereas the expression of mPtch1 was similarly induced in both mes and wild-type cells. These data define a novel signal transduction pathway involving c-src that is activated by the Hh ligands and reveals the requirement for the C terminus of Ptch in regulation of canonical and non-canonical Hh signaling pathways.  相似文献

Recently, the genus name Brandtia Hoshina was given for a chlorellacean symbiotic alga residing in some ciliate species. However, it was found that Brandtia Hoshina 2017 is an illegitimate later homonym of Brandtia Kunth 1831. Although little studied, infections with nematodes of the Onchocercidae Leiper, 1911, predominated by the genera Dipetalonema Diesing, 1861 and Mansonella Faust, 1929, are frequent in wild primates and human populations in the Neotropical forest areas. This study reports natural infections with Dipetalonema freitasi Bain, Diagne & Muller, 1987 and D. gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) in two free-living species of pitheciid primates, extending the known geographical distribution of these species to the forest of the Peruvian Amazon. Adult worms were recovered from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of two species of monkeys, Pithecia monachus monachus (É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire) and Cacajao calvus ucayalii (Thomas) (Primates: Pitheciidae), collected along the Yavari-Mirin River basin and analysed via light and scanning electron microscopy. Both host species represent new host records for D. freitasi and D. gracile. Morphometric data are also presented for the sampled filarial worms in addition to morphological details obtained through light and electron microscopy examination of D. freitasi specimens.

Several decades ago, due to eutrophication, Albufera de València lagoon lost the charophyte meadows that covered the bottom in the past but had never been studied in detail. An area close to the lagoon will be restored now to improve water quality and to recover submerged vegetation. To have information on the background of the charophytes from this area, four 80-87 cm long sediment cores were extracted from the lagoon. The subfossil charophyte fructifications (oospores and gyrogonites) were isolated and identified in two of the four cores. Moreover, sediment core fractions from the third and fourth cores were allowed to germinate under several conditions. The study of the lagoon sediments has revealed that at least 11 morphologies of charophyte fructifications existed in the past. Ten of these were determined at species level: Chara vulgaris, Chara hispida, Chara aspera, Chara baltica, Chara tomentosa, Chara globularis, Lamprothamnium papulosum, Nitella hyalina, Tolypella glomerata and Tolypella hispanica. However, one form of Chara gyrogonite did not fit in any known species. L. papulosum oospores and gyrogonites were the most abundant and concentrated in the deepest sediment layers when the lagoon held brackish water. Large changes in salinity due to freshwater input drove charophyte species substitution (disappearance of L. papulosum). During the oligohaline period C. vulgaris sexual propagules were the most abundant. The last charophyte community before its disappearance due to eutrophication was composed mainly of C. hispida, C. tomentosa and N. hyalina (the two latter with small numbers of oospores in the sediment). To characterize the morphology of the unidentified gyrogonite species, 100 specimens were studied. This type could be a local variety of a more common species, probably C. vulgaris, grown under particular ecological conditions. Old collected oospores (more than 45 years old) germinated and could be identified as C. vulgaris and C. hispida.  相似文献

A new species of Stemodia (Plantaginaceae) from the Caatinga of northern Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described and illustrated. Stemodia perfoliata was first collected by Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, ca. 200 years ago, and remained unnamed until now. The new species is characterized by the connate-perfoliate leaves, a unique feature in the genus. We provide notes on morphology, geographic distribution and conservation status of S. perfoliata, along with a key to differentiate it from the similar species that occur in Brazil: S. durantifolia, S. hyptoides, S. maritima, S. palustris and S. stricta.  相似文献
